A very special Audi Q3 concept groomed specifically for winter sports like the pistes in the famous Colorado mountain resort which inspired its name is unveiled today in Detroit. The Q3 Vail concept will share the limelight with the new generation Audi A4 at the North American International Automobile Show (January 14-22), and will combine striking, harder-edged styling with a suitably brawny 2.5-litre TFSI petrol engine delivering 314PS.

Designed for young fans of winter sports who love skiing or snowboarding, the Audi Q3 Vail represents a new, potential variation on the compact SUV theme. The concept is painted in the colour developed specially for it – Energy Red – which contains golden pearlescent particles. Its add-on body parts are finished in matt grey quartz-based paint, and underline the vehicle’s robust and rugged character. The area around the windows is enhanced by eye-catching elements in aluminium and high-gloss black.

Vertical bars made from aluminium are integrated in the single-frame grille. They extend across the full height of the grille. In the horizontal panel, which carries the license plate on production Q3 models, they are pulled outwards to striking effect.

The struts feature a bi-colour theme developed specifically for the Q3 Vail: their lateral edges are painted in matt quartz-based paint, and the slim front faces have a high-gloss finish.

In the headlights the zones in the lower area of the light-guide elements, which generate the daytime running lights, are painted anthracite. The side air inlets further emphasize the themed vehicle’s powerful appearance; their top areas are covered by solid aluminium panels. The underbody guard beneath the front end is also made from aluminium.

Flared arches

Eyecatching features on the flanks of the Q3 Vail include flared wheel arches and running boards, and on the roof the specially designed aluminum rails firmly hold carbon fibre skis and snowboards. The front roof-rail support integrates compact, energy-efficient, wide-angled LED lights that illuminate the area around the Audi Q3 Vail. They are controlled via buttons in the roof module.

The Audi Q3 Vail is fitted with 255/45 section off-road tyres and 20-inch five-arm wheels whose visible edges have a high-gloss finish which mirrors the single-frame grille. Their inside areas feature the same matt quartz-based paint. Track width has increased by 40 millimetres at the front and rear compared to series production models, and the body is 30 millimetres higher. At the rear, the two tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are integrated into the diffuser and underbody guard area.

The interior of the Audi Q3 Vail has a fittingly sporty black, grey and red colour scheme. The headlining is made from titanium grey Alcantara; large parts of the interior, including the carpet, are black. The black, ribbed floor mats are edged with narrow strips of red velvet-finish leather.

An innovative leather/fabric material is used for the upholstery – thin strips of leather just a few tenths of a millimetre wide, are interwoven with yarn. The upholstery features piping with double seams; like the contrasting stitching, the piping is red. Small sections of the upholstery are made from red velvet-finish leather – a hardwearing material that looks similar to nubuck leather at first glance, but in fact has a finer structure. The segments integrated in the door trims are also in red velvet-finish leather, trimmed in steel grey Fine Nappa leather.

The entire instrument panel in the themed vehicle is trimmed in black Fine Nappa leather. Contrasting stitching in titanium grey is an elegant highlight. The leather across the hood of the instrument cluster is steel grey with red contrasting stitching. This colour scheme is replicated on the door armrests at the front and rear. The front section of the transmission tunnel also has a leather trim.

The inlays around the S tronic selector level, at the front of the cockpit and in the doors comprise a three-dimensional stainless steel mesh that requires a complex manufacturing process. The selector lever features a high-gloss black ring and an aluminium badge with a milled “Q3 Vail” signature. The lever gaiter is enhanced by red stitching.

Aluminium takes centre stage in the instrument cluster. The most striking elements are the metal dials around the speedometer and rev counter. They were made using a rotary-grinding process. Metal is also used on their rings and around the edges of the control lights. Horizontal bars and small fins give the dials and needle centres a sporty, three-dimensional look. The leather steering wheel features red contrasting stitching and an aluminium trim. Behind it are two large shift paddles for manually controlling the seven-speed S tronic transmission. The footrest and the pedals have thin pads made from rubber. Slits offer a glimpse of the stainless steel beneath the pads.

In some parts of the interior the trims are in high-gloss black – the display and control elements on top of them appear to float. This applies to the area surrounding the driver’s information system, the zone around the air vents, the periphery of the MMI terminal and the row of switches on the centre console. Aluminium inserts give the black switches an air of sophistication. Chrome trims adorn the controls of the air conditioning system; the air vents have black ribs and chrome-trimmed rotary knobs.

The soft keys for the MMI navigation plus system are made from aluminium, while the control terminal benefits from narrow strips of the same material. The monitor, which can be folded out manually, has a trim that matches the surface of the instrument panel. The system includes an animation showing the longitudinal and latitudinal tilt angle of the Audi Q3 Vail. In regions that are not included in the map data, the MMI navigation plus system logs the GPS coordinates of the route – for assistance during the return journey.

Induction charging and heating

The interior of the Audi Q3 Vail includes two practical devices for winter sports fans. The side wall of the trunk houses a charging station. It can be used for storing flashlights and charging them inductively at the same time. The same technology is used for the Thermos bottle. It is located in the cup holder between the front seats and is able to chill or warm drinks. Both devices have LEDs that show the current charge level. One attractive extra is that, in addition to LED lighting, the flashlights incorporate an infra-red heating element that can be used for warming hands or ski boots.

Another intelligent solution in the themed vehicle is the load floor mat, which has integrated heated seat cushions. The mat can be folded out and laid over the loading lip. This protects the trunk edge while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, and also provides a warm area to sit on when putting on or taking off your ski boots. Small LED spotlights on the inside of the tailgate provide light.

The Audi Q3 Vail features a 2.5-litre five-cylinder TFSI engine with direct injection and turbocharging that generates an output of 314PS and 400 Nm of torque from a displacement of 2,480 cc.

The engine’s five cylinders are consecutively numbered; red ‘wrinkled-finish’ paint has been applied to the cylinder head cover. A panel made from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) partially covers the engine, and the air filter is also protected against dirt. There is a decorative trim made from plastic around the engine compartment. The acoustic mat on the inside of the bonnet has a “Q3 Vail” logo embroidered in dark grey.

The power of the turbocharged five-cylinder unit is transferred to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed S tronic transmission. The Audi Q3 Vail accelerates from zero to 62mph in 5.5 seconds and continues to a top speed of 163mph.

High performance, high specification all-wheel-drive A1 premium subcompact will be limited to just 333 examples worldwide

Exclusive left-hand-drive-only all-wheel-drive A1 model limited to 333 examples worldwide

Powered by 2.0-litre TFSI engine delivering 256PS at 6,000rpm and 350Nm of torque between 2,500 and 4,500rpm, 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, top speed 152mph, combined mpg 33.2

Unique and extensive exterior and interior specification

Due in mainland Europe in the second half of 2012 – customer interest will help to determine whether Audi UK begins imports

Sparks are about to fly in the subcompact class as a new limited edition Audi A1 stakes a claim to be the most powerful and fastest accelerating car of its kind ever created. The new ultra-exclusive A1 is not only the first to enter production with quattro all-wheel-drive but is also the first to adopt a larger capacity petrol engine ramping power up to 256PS. Limited to just 333 examples worldwide, it will combine its unprecedented performance and agility with a suitably rarefied equipment list.

The A1 quattro will raise the tempo thanks to a turbocharged and directly injected 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which delivers its maximum 256PS output at 6,000rpm, and its punchy 350Nm torque peak between 2,500 and 4,500rpm. It enables the A1 quattro to power from rest to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 152mph.

This advanced unit is notable for its adjustable intake cam shaft and its two balancer shafts which ensure smooth operation, but also for its high pressure common rail injection system, intercooled turbocharger and regulated oil pump which help it to operate surprisingly economically and deliver up to 33.2mpg (combined cycle).

Power is channelled via a quick-shifting six-speed manual transmission to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, the heart of which is an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch whose package of plates rotates in an oil bath.

During normal driving, the clutch sends most of the engine’s power to the front wheels. If traction decreases there, the clutch can transfer torque steplessly to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds by forcing the packages of plates together by a defined amount. A pressure reservoir helps the electric pump to develop the oil pressure. If a wheel on one of the axles starts to skid, it is braked by the electronic differential lock (EDL). The electronic stability program (ESP) also includes a sport mode which sets a higher threshold for intervention, and can be switched off entirely for track use.

The chassis of the Audi A1 quattro has been adapted to suit the dynamics of the drivetrain, and the multi-plate clutch has also been positioned on the rear axle in the interest of optimum weight distribution. The front suspension is a McPherson strut construction, while a four-link set-up is used at the rear. Responsive and efficient electrohydraulic power steering with a direct 14.8:1 steering ratio complements this taut and well balanced configuration.

Unique specification

Finished exclusively in Glacier White metallic, complemented by 18-inch turbine design alloy wheels also in Glacier White and a high-gloss black roof, the A1 quattro will stand out from the outset. It will also distinguish itself visually through an exclusive design for the front and rear bumpers, the grille and its frame, red painted ‘wings’ within the headlights, a large two-colour rear spoiler and two sizeable, 100-millimetre diameter polished exhaust tailpipes.

Finishing touches such as tinted LED rear lights, tinted rear windows and a contrasting black colouring for the rear hatch and rear diffuser will also mark out the top-ranking A1, as will quattro badges on the grille, roof arch and rear hatch which bear testament to this car’s unique position as the first ever all-wheel-drive production A1.

At 3,987 millimetres in length, the A1 quattro is 33 millimetres longer than the ‘standard’ car on which it is based. It matches its counterparts for width and height, standing at 1,740 millimetres and 1,416 millimetres respectively. Luggage capacity is 210 litres with seats up rising to 860 litres with seats folded.

Purposeful black dominates the interior of the Audi A1 quattro, from the high gloss finish for the lower section of the centre console to the seats and door armrests finished in black Silk Nappa leather with contrasting red stitching. The multi-adjustable front S sport seats have pronounced bolsters, integrated head restraints and quattro insignias on their backrests. The footrest and the pedal caps are made of brushed stainless steel. Red stitching frames the floor mats, and the door sill trims bear A1 quattro badges.

The instrument cluster incorporates a number of eye-catching features, including white needles, a red-faced speedometer, a quattro logo and a colour Driver’s Information System (DIS). The multifunction sports steering wheel is flat-bottomed, trimmed in leather with contrasting red stitching and sports the car’s serial number. The shift lever knob is made of aluminium, and many control elements have an aluminium-look finish.

Lavish equipment list

As befits its standing at the pinnacle of the A1 range the A1 quattro will be suitably lavishly equipped with many features taken directly from the luxury class. Xenon plus headlights, the high-beam assistant, adaptive brake lights, an LED interior lighting package, light and rain sensors, the acoustic rear parking system, automatic air conditioning, a storage package, the convenience key and cruise control will all feature.

Infotainment kit will also be exceptional, particularly for a car in the subcompact class. It will include a CD changer, DAB digital radio, Audi Music Interface, hard disk-based MMI navigation plus, a 465-watt 14-speaker Bose sound system with illuminated woofers in the doors and Mobile Phone Preparation High with Online Services. This feature enables a Bluetooth-equipped online car phone to connect to the Internet and deliver special web services, including Google Earth, to the car. Passengers can also connect their mobile devices to the integrated Wi-Fi hotspot.

The left-hand-drive only Audi A1 quattro will be available in mainland Europe in the second half of 2012. A final decision on whether or not Audi UK will import the car will be based in part on customer reaction.

New Q7 3.0 TDI quattro 204PS models complement existing 3.0 TDI quattro 245PS versions

Available in conjunction with Standard, SE, S line and new S line Plus specification levels – OTR prices from £39,995 to £49,120

Combines seven-seat practicality with quattro four-wheel-drive and variable height adaptive air suspension for genuine off-road capability

Q7 3.0 TDI quattro 204PS @ 3,200 to 4,400rpm, 450Nm @ 1,250 to 2,750rpm – 0-62mph in 9.1 seconds, top speed 127mph, combined MPG 39.2, CO2 189g/km

New S line Plus specification includes metallic paint, 21-inch alloy wheels, Verano leather upholstery, privacy glass, hard disc-based navigation with Google Earth mapping, in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, Audi Music Interface iPod connection, powered tailgate operation, Audi Parking System Advanced with reversing camera and running boards

Audi Q7 drivers can now use fuel more sparingly and savour seven-seat comfort more completely in the new Q7 3.0 TDI 204PS S line Plus. Taking the lower output V6 TDI engine first seen in the A6 on board the Q7 for the first time, and combining its 39mpg capability with an exceptional new specification, the lavishly appointed newcomer is available to order now priced at £49,120 OTR. At the same time, this punchy but remarkably efficient unit also appears in the most attainable lead-in Q7 model to date – the 3.0 TDI 204PS Standard priced at £39,995 OTR.

To strike its impressive balance between performance and economy the timing of the 3.0-litre engine’s camshafts, its turbocharger and its advanced common-rail system (with an injection pressure of 2,000 bar) have been optimized specifically with fuel efficiency in mind. As a result, up to 39.2mpg is possible according to the combined cycle test, equating to CO2 output of 189g/km.

With the help of a super-smooth eight-speed tiptronic transmission, the latest V6 TDI uses its 204PS and its 450Nm torque reserve to power the Q7 to 62mph from rest in 9.1 seconds, and enables it to reach a 127mph top speed where conditions allow.

In common with all Q7 models drive is channelled to all four wheels in a 40% front to 60% rear ratio by the quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system, and both on and off the tarmac the standard five-mode air suspension with its variable ground clearance of between 180mm and 240mm helps to iron out the most imperfect of surfaces.

Choice of four specification levels

Four specification levels are available for the Q7 – Standard, SE, S line and the new S line Plus – and it is the latter which enables the imposing seven-seater to make its boldest visual statement. Externally it includes 21-inch 5 segment-spoke alloy wheels, standard metallic paint, tinted privacy glass from the B-pillar rearwards and running boards. Powered tailgate operation also boosts practicality.

Inside, an upgrade to even more supple Verano leather upholstery makes for an even more luxurious ambiance. Up to seven occupants can be accommodated in the three rows of seats that are included as standard, two of which can be folded down if required to create a load area of 2,035 litres.

The air of sophistication is enhanced further in the S line Plus by features such as hard disk-based satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone preparation with online services giving access to Google Earth navigation mapping and creating a Wi-Fi hotspot for in-car internet access, Audi Music Interface iPod connection linked to an upgraded speaker system and the Audi Parking System Advanced with reversing camera.

S line Plus specification carries a premium of £4,500 over the existing S line option, and is available in conjunction with five of the six available engines, which include the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrols in 272PS and 333PS forms, the 204PS and 245PS V6 Diesels and the 340PS 4.2-litre V8 TDI. The mighty Q7 V12 TDI with its incredible 1,000Nm torque peak has its own unique specification.

Picture caption

Audi Q7 on the plus side – A new lead-in 204PS V6 TDI engine has joined the Audi Q7 range, increasing its economy potential to up to 39.2mpg and reducing CO2 to 189g/km. The Q7 3.0 TDI quattro 204PS is priced from £39,995 OTR, and is also available with a lavish new S line Plus specification that can be combined with all the six and eight cylinder engines in the range.

New five-door Sportback version of Audi premium subcompact further enhances appeal with five seats and greater versatility.

Five-door, five-seat versatility meets exemplary quality, efficiency and technological sophistication in the new A1 Sportback, an even more user-friendly addition to the acclaimed premium subcompact range that will become available in the UK later this month and will reach its first customers here in the spring of 2012. Carrying a modest £560 premium over each equivalent three-door A1 in exchange for greater convenience and five-seat capability, the A1 Sportback will be priced from £13,980 OTR.

Although its compact, city-friendly dimensions very closely follow those of the three-door A1, the A1 Sportback is actually six millimetres taller and six millimetres wider, and inside offers slightly more head room and shoulder room as a result. It also makes provision for an extra passenger – up to three can pass through its rear doors and take a seat, each of them protected by a headrest and full three-point seatbelt.

Luggage compartment capacity is on a par with the three-door A1 at 270 litres with the backrests of the standard split/folding rear seat in place or 920 litres with the seat folded. The L-shaped, retractable head restraints do not have to be removed to do this. The loading lip is a comfortably low 66 centimetres, and stowage can be further simplified by an optional luggage package featuring usefully divided storage compartments under the loading floor and other amenities.

Features common to the SE, Sport and S line options available for UK A1 Sportback models include alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front and rear windows and mirrors, split folding rear seat and a six-speaker single CD Concert audio system linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display.

Sport model additions include larger 16-inch wheels, sports suspension, sports seats, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation and a Driver’s Information System, while S line versions upgrade with extras such as an exclusive S line exterior treatment including larger 17-inch alloy wheels, S line sports suspension and leather and cloth combination upholstery.

Infotainment from the classes above
The standard Concert audio system with its 6.5-inch retractable monitor and SD card reader serves as the foundation for options such as the connectivity package, which includes the Audi music interface (AMI), Bluetooth telephone preparation, Bluetooth audio streaming and a second SD card reader which prepares the A1 to accept SD card-based satellite navigation. The customer can activate the latter at any time via an Audi Centre at extra cost.

The next step up is the technology package, which includes MMI navigation plus using a large hard disk to display 3D graphics in high resolution, the MMI operating principle, a DVD drive, the AMI and powerful voice control.

Examples of the additional high-end complementary features available include a digital audio tuner and the 465-watt Bose surround sound system with 14 speakers. The front woofers are illuminated with LEDs. Bluetooth and wired interfaces are available for mobile phones and external players.

Another feature not normally associated with cars in this segment is the Bluetooth online car phone that brings ‘Audi connect’ online services to the A1 Sportback. These include navigation with images from Google Earth, specially prepared news, weather and travel information, web radio and voice-controlled POI search. At a later date it will also incorporate Google Street View images. A WLAN hotspot connects mobile devices on board to the Internet.

Many other individual options reflect the high-tech expertise of the A1 Sportback. These include Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights, a high-beam assistant, light and rain sensors, the advanced key, two different parking system versions and cruise control, to name a few. The list of more indulgent extras extends to everything from electronic climate control, heated front seats and special colours for the air vent sleeves to fine leather upholstery.

New contrasting roof option
Externally, the options list for the A1 Sportback extends beyond the three-door version by offering customers the possibility to choose one of three contrasting colours not only for the roof line as in the three-door, but also for the entire roof itself as well as, in S line models, the spoiler that extends from it. The Sportback will also expand on the eleven paint colours available for the three door with a twelfth – Samoa Orange – that will be available exclusively for the new five-door.

The A1 Sportback range will initially feature a choice of three TFSI petrol engines and one TDI diesel producing between 86PS and 185PS. All bar the 185PS unit will have their impressive efficiency further enhanced by an engine start-stop system.

The 1.2-litre TFSI (86PS), 1.4-litre TFSI (122PS), 1.4-litre twin-charge TFSI (185PS) and 1.6-litre TDI (105PS) line-up will be joined in the summer of 2012 by a fifth member – the 2.0-litre TDI with 143PS. Just introduced into the three-door A1 line-up, it will power the A1 Sportback 2.0 TDI to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, and has the potential for 68.9mpg according to the combined cycle test.

In line with the three-door A1 range, the 1.6-litre TDI model will again be the efficiency standard-bearer for the Sportback, combining its 105PS output with the potential for 74.3mpg and a congestion charge and VED-eliminating 99 gram CO2 output per kilometre.

The performance flagship – the turbocharged and supercharged 1.4 TFSI 185PS - will feature the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch gearbox with its exceptionally rapid shifts as standard, helping it to sprint to 62mph from rest in 7.0 seconds on the way to a top speed of 141mph. This much-praised, performance-oriented transmission will also be available as an option for the 1.4 TFSI with 122PS. All other versions use quick and smooth-shifting manual transmissions.

Thanks in part to these relatively light, compact engines, weight distribution in the A1 Sportback is remarkably even front-to-rear. Combined with short overhangs, sophisticated front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension and the latest generation Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with electronic axle differential, this makes for a compliant ride and well-balanced handling that is also nimble and fun. This is especially true of the Sport models with their tauter set-up, and even more so with the S line-specific settings.

New more powerful TDI engine and new Black Edition and Contrast Edition specification options for Audi sub-compact hatchback

New visually striking Black Edition and Contrast Edition specification options available now for A1 range

A1 also supplements its existing 1.6-litre 105PS TDI engine with 143PS 2.0-litre TDI engine linked to six-speed manual transmission

A1 2.0 TDI available to order now in conjunction with Sport, S line, Black Edition and Contrast Edition specification priced from £17,945 OTR

A1 2.0 TDI 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, top speed 135mph, combined mpg 68.9, CO2 108g/km

Getting personal with the Audi A1 becomes even easier from this week thanks to new Black Edition and Contrast Edition specification options that take different routes to achieve an even more striking and exclusive look. The new design options can now also be combined with a more powerful 2.0-litre, 143PS TDI engine that complements the existing 1.6-litre, 105PS unit.

Contrast Edition specification is available for a premium of £1,350 over the price of an equivalent A1 Sport model, and in conjunction with all engines in the A1 range with the exception of the 1.4 TFSI 185PS. It brings a contrasting colour for the roof line and for aerodynamic body styling elements that are also added over and above the Sport specification, plus larger 17-inch ‘five-arm’ design bi-colour alloy wheels that expand on the Sport model’s 16-inch examples. For a more resolutely sporty look a double-blade roof spoiler, also in a contrasting colour, can be added at extra cost.

The Black Edition alternative is based on the top S line specification, and is available exclusively in conjunction with the 185PS 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and the newly introduced 143PS 2.0-litre TDI. For a premium of £1,100 over the S line models, it adds a black styling treatment for the single frame grille surround and number plate holder, dark tinted rear privacy glass, 18-inch five-arm rotor design alloy wheels in a titanium finish in place of the S line model’s 17-inch equivalents and Xenon Plus headlights with LED daytime-running lights. Inside, it also brings full electronic climate control as an enhancement to the S line model’s manual air conditioning and the Audi Sound System speaker upgrade giving 180 watts of output.

More TDI power

Alongside the additional scope for visual enhancement offered by the two new specification options comes the potential for even greater TDI pace thanks to the fifth and latest introduction to the A1 engine range. The 2.0-litre TDI with common-rail fuel injection is available in conjunction with Sport, S line, Contrast Edition and Black Edition specification levels, and is priced from £17,945 OTR. It develops 143PS and maximum torque of 320 Nm between 1750 and 2500 rpm – enough to push the A1 2.0 TDI with six-speed manual transmission to 62mph from rest in 8.2 seconds on the way to a top speed of 135mph.

Impressive 68.9mpg combined economy complements this strong performance, and pares CO2 output back to 108g/km, positioning the A1 2.0 TDI very favourably in VED band B (£20 per annum).

The A1 TDI range also includes the 1.6 TDI with a VED and congestion charge-eliminating 99g/km CO2 output, and from the petrol-powered camp the similarly turbocharged and directly-injected 1.2-litre TFSI with 86PS and 1.4-litre TFSI with 122PS. At the head of the range in output terms is the 1.4-litre TFSI with 185PS, which combines supercharging and turbocharging to achieve its impressive output.

The Audi A4 is about to raise its stock yet again as new generation Saloon, Avant and allroad versions of the accomplished premium compact executive adopt an even more sharply tailored look and a blue chip portfolio of new or revised engines which pay even greater economy dividends. Due with their first UK customers in March 2012, the new generation A4 ranges will carry a premium of just £200 over their outgoing equivalents, despite significant styling enhancements and efficiency gains of up to 21 per cent. Prices will start at under £24,000, and orders can be taken from today (Tuesday November 8).

Efficiency was of course at front of mind during the redevelopment of this eighth generation A4 range, so as a starting point all nine of the turbo charged and directly injected engines that power it are linked without exception to start/stop and recuperation systems. These help to bring about economy improvements that average 11 per cent across the board, but actually amount to as much as 21 per cent.

The petrol range will kick off, as it did before, with the 1.8-litre TFSI with 120PS, which is due to open for orders in early 2012, slightly later than the first phase. Until then, the lead-in unit is a more powerful 1.8-litre TFSI which has been completely redesigned for the A4 to include ground-breaking innovations in many areas, including control of the valves and their lift, thermal management, fuel injection, turbocharging and the integration of the exhaust manifold. With power increased from the previous 160PS to 170PS, and an even more significant torque hike from 250Nm to 320Nm, it combines 49.6mpg economy potential with CO2 output down from 169g/km to 134g/km – a 21 per cent improvement. With the departure of the 3.2-litre naturally aspirated V6 petrol engine from the latest range, the perennially popular 2.0-litre TFSI unit with 211PS now completes the petrol line-up.

Six TDI engine options

The bulk of the engine range changes are reserved for the TDI contingent, which now offers an outstanding choice of six options employing either four or six cylinders. Of the four 2.0-litre four-cylinder units, two power acutely efficiency focused TDIe models. The 136PS version which performed this role originally continues, and has been joined by a more powerful 163PS version. CO2 drops to 112g/km from 120g/km in the A4 2.0 TDIe 136PS, and the 2.0 TDIe 163PS runs this figure impressively close at 115g/km. Combined cycle economy figures stand at 65.7mpg and 64.2mpg respectively.

In the interest of maximum breadth of choice, particularly for business users, the 143PS version of the 2.0-litre TDI continues alongside a 177PS unit – with power up from 170PS – that heads the four-cylinder line-up. The 136PS, 163PS and 177PS units have been further refined by a new pendulum type absorber in the dual mass flywheel which makes engine running even smoother and more refined at low revs.

In the V6 camp, a 204PS 3.0-litre unit first seen in the A6 Saloon and A7 Sportback is adopted in place of the 2.7-litre TDI, and brings up to 57.6mpg to front-wheel-drive models. A 245PS version is linked exclusively to quattro all-wheel-drive in Saloon, Avant and allroad quattro variants.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard for Saloon and Avant models with front-wheel drive, and most variants offer the continuously variable multitronic automatic transmission as an option. The quattro versions feature either the manual transmission or the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch automatic. The A4 allroad quattro employs a manual transmission or S tronic with all engine versions.

An innovative new thermal management system shortens the warm-up phase of the manual transmission, and thereby reduces friction losses, and all transmissions are distinguished by high efficiency and a wide spread of gear ratios, with long ratios in the higher gears to boost fuel economy and short ratios in the lower gears to optimise response.

The quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system is standard for the A4 allroad quattro and 245PS A4 3.0 TDI quattro models, and available at extra cost for 211PS 2.0-litre TFSI petrol and 177PS 2.0-litre TDI variants. The A4 family uses the self-locking centre differential, which under normal driving conditions transmits torque to the rear wheels in the ratio of 40 to 60, but can rapidly vary this according to the situation. Torque vectoring supplements the work of the centre differential with intermittent brake applications to boost handling precision.

Revised suspension
The highly advantageous quattro system works with a sophisticated chassis incorporating five-link front suspension and a trapezoidal link at the rear, both featuring a high lightweight aluminium content. The mounts of the rear suspension control arms and the characteristics of the shock absorbers have been even more finely tuned in this latest generation model.

In the V6 quattro variants Audi offers the sport differential as an option, lending maximum adjustability and control to the A4 when cornering at the handling limits. The differential actively distributes the power between the rear wheels as required.

Electromechanical power steering is new to all models in the series. Its direct gear ratios work in favour of precise response, and it draws no power from the engine when running in the straight-ahead position, thereby improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions by up to 7 g/km.

New efficiency mode for Audi drive select
These features and more can be influenced by the optional Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system. In its standard form, it enables the driver to alter the throttle response, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the power steering feel and the automatic air conditioning between the four modes “comfort,” “auto,” “dynamic” and “efficiency.” The latter is new to the A4, and sets all the elements, plus the climate control system, to operate at their most fuel-sparing level.

If the optional navigation system is on board, Audi drive select also includes an “individual” mode which allows even more fine-tuning. And if options such as dynamic steering and damper control are also added, the ratio of the steering and the response of the shock absorbers are also governed by the drive select controls.

All front-wheel-drive versions of the A4 feature the electronic stability programme (ESP) with electronic limited slip differential. When negotiating more challenging roads the system further improves handling and safety by initiating minimum brake interventions at the front wheel that is subject to a reduced load on the inside of a bend. The large brakes – with ventilated front and rear discs in many variants – offer excellent stopping power and can be precisely modulated.

Visually, the latest refinement of the A4 range begins with a reworked bumper with new look angled air inlets and flat fog lights which leads into a revised single frame grille with tapered upper edges and redesigned cross ribs. Flanked by restyled headlights, the grille flows into a re-sculpted bonnet. Where Xenon headlamps are fitted, these are fringed by updated LED daytime running lights that form a narrow, continuous band. The A4 allroad quattro is distinguished by its horizontal chrome grille applications and by its round fog lights.

The tail lights reflect the shape of the headlights, and where xenon headlamps are fitted these are formed from homogeneous strips of LEDs. The bumper with its diffuser insert has also been redesigned.

Streamlined controls
Detail refinements also extend to the already highly acclaimed interior, which features new steering wheels, including a flat bottomed design for the sports wheel, and additional high-gloss applications and chrome trim for many of the surfaces and controls. The latter have also become even more intuitive in many cases – the MMI navigation plus system in particular now features fewer buttons and a new multi-functional volume control with joystick cap for even greater simplicity. There have also been improvements to the automatic transmission selector lever and the controls for the air conditioning unit, the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system, the seat heating function and the multifunction steering wheel.

The familiarly high level of workmanship is complemented as usual by elegant interior colour schemes, all of which have been revised for this latest generation. The upholstery range has also been amended, with Fine Nappa leather replacing Valcona leather. Inlays are available in Aluminium Trigon, walnut dark brown, fine grain ash natural and the particularly eyecatching Beaufort oak.

The A4 Saloon’s luggage compartment retains a 480 litre capacity, or 962 litres with the rear seats folded down. The A4 Avant and the A4 allroad quattro offer 490 and 1,430 litres respectively.

The specification levels for this latest generation model begin with the more comfort-oriented SE designation, which includes features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, a ten-speaker, 180-watt Concert CD audio system with auxiliary input and 6.5-inch monitor, cruise control, rear parking sensors, light and rain sensors, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation and a colour Driver’s Information System.

For an easy and cost-effective route to even greater luxury and technological sophistication, all 2.0-litre TDI engine options can be allied to an upgraded SE Technik trim, which for a premium of £1,100 over SE adds Milano leather upholstery, DVD-based satellite navigation, Audi music interface iPod connection and the Audi parking system Plus with front and rear sensors and visual and acoustic guidance.

S line specification is as usual the choice for more performance-oriented drivers, and includes larger 18-inch alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension, S line exterior and interior styling enhancements and xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and rear LED lights.

To make the A4 look, and sound, as stunning as possible, a Black Edition specification which takes S line as its basis is available at the very top of the options tree. For an additional £1,250 over S line it adds 19-inch alloy wheels with a titanium finish, and a black styling package which frames the grille, fog lights, windows and number plate in high gloss black, and for Avant models adds black roof rails and dark tinted privacy glass from the B-pillar rearwards. Inside, enhancements include Audi music interface iPod connection, DAB digital radio, a high performance 505-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system, piano black inlays and, for Saloon versions, the Audi parking system plus.

New online services option
An exciting new option available across the board is a high specification mobile phone interface offering online services, which not only brings a Google-powered Points of Interest search and navigation using Google Earth images, but also creates a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) hotspot within the A4 enabling occupants to connect phones and computers to the internet wirelessly.

Also new to this latest generation model are an updated adaptive cruise control system and the Audi active lane assist lane departure warning system. The evolution of adaptive cruise control can now bring the A4 to a complete halt automatically at speeds of less than 18mph if its sensors detect the possibility of a collision. Using optical sensors to monitor road markings, the Audi active lane assist system detects unintentional lane deviations and alerts straying drivers by initiating active steering intervention to gently guide the car back into lane.

To minimise the risk of unintentional manoeuvres caused by fatigue, all A4 models are also equipped with a Break Recommendation function built into their Driver’s Information System. It uses a steering angle sensor to monitor steering movements, and also assesses use of the pedals and gear lever. If the sensors detect irregular or overly sudden driver inputs the driver is alerted to the possible need to take a break by audible and visual cues in the cockpit.

The Audi S4
The Audi S4, available in Saloon and Avant body styles and with either six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic transmissions, employs the most powerful engine in the line-up – the 3.0-litre TFSI with 333PS and 440 Nm of torque. The S4 Saloon accelerates from rest to 62mph in 5.0 seconds and achieves an electronically limited maximum speed of 155mph, yet balances this impressive performance with the potential for up to 34.9mpg according to the combined cycle test.

The latest incarnation is identifiable by the changes to its headlights, bumpers and air intakes, and by updates to colour schemes and interior fittings in line with the A4 range.

Picture caption

Audi redefines its business class – New generation Saloon and Avant versions of the accomplished A4 premium compact executive Saloon, Avant and allroad quattro models combine an even more sharply tailored look and an expanded line-up of engines bringing economy gains of up to 21 per cent. Due in March 2012, the new generation A4 ranges will be priced from just under £24,000.

A bestseller has become even more attractive: Audi has updated the A4 series. New solutions for efficiency, driving dynamics and infotainment, along with an even more attractive design, show the “Vorsprung durch Technik” achieved by the A4 Saloon, the A4 Avant, the A4 allroad quattro and the S4.

Design

The A4 is Audi’s bestseller – for 39 years now and in its eighth generation. The brand has sold ten million such models in total. The A4, with its elegance, sportiness and emotional appeal, forms the centrepiece of the Audi brand. And now the design has become even more clearly defined and striking in all models – the Saloon, the Avant, the allroad quattro and the S4.

The new look further accentuates the horizontal lines at the front end. The engine hood is more arched, the upper corners of the single frame grille are tapered, and the cross ribs and the Audi rings are highlighted three-dimensionally. The grille is painted grey, with high-gloss black on the six-cylinder models or in combination with the S line exterior package. The redesigned bumpers are striking with their angular air inlets, their revised grilles and the flat front fog lights. The A4 allroad quattro is distinguished by its grille’s horizontal chrome applications and by the round fog lights.

The headlights have also changed, with a slight wave at the bottom edges, and a re-arranged interior. Xenon plus headlights are available as optional equipment or standard on S line models. The LED daytime running lights form a narrow, optically continuous band that remains open in the vicinity of the xenon lens. The adaptive light, together with dynamic and static cornering lights, are available as an option.

The tail lights reflect the shape of the headlights, and in combination with Xenon plus have homogeneous strips of LEDs. The bumper with its diffuser insert has been redesigned, with the exhaust system always terminating in two tailpipes.

The Saloon and the Avant offer the S line exterior package, while the Avant also includes a roof spoiler.

The modifications have changed the dimensions only by a few millimetres. The A4 Saloon and the Avant each have a length of 4.70 metres (15.42 ft), while the A4 allroad quattro and the S4 are 4.72 metres (15.49 ft)long. The wheelbases for all models are 2.81 metres (9.22 ft), and the width is 1.83 and 1.84 metres, respectively (6.0 and 6.04 ft). The height varies between 1.41 and 1.50 metres (4.63 and 4.92 ft) depending on the body version.

Interior

The interior of the A4 models has also been refined. Audi offers a selection of new steering wheels with chrome and high-gloss inlays, with the leather sport steering wheel also featuring a flattened lower rim. The steering arm and the ignition key have been modified. High-gloss applications and the slender chrome trim at the controls add elegance to the interior.

The elaborate finish makes operation even simpler and more intuitive. The MMI navigation plus system now features four instead of eight buttons, with a shift function integrated in the volume control dial. Other improvements concern operation of the automatic transmission, the efficient air conditioning systems, Audi drive select and the multifunction steering wheel. The seat heating and air conditioning are now directly operated at the respective buttons.

The high level of workmanship is as much a matter of course for Audi as a sure touch in the range of colours. All interior colours – except black – have been re-coordinated. The upholstery range has also been revised, with Fine Nappa leather replacing Valcona leather. The new, single-part cluster trim has been adapted in colour to the interior, while the inlays are available in Aluminium Trigon, walnut dark brown and fine grain ash natural. Especially eye-catching is the Beaufort oak plywood inlay.

The interior of the S line sport package comes in black, and is refined with high-quality applications. 18-inch wheels or the optional 19-inch wheels and Sport suspension that lowers the body by 20 millimetres complete the package. S line sport suspension, which lowers the body by a further 10 millimetres, is also available as a no-cost option on S line models. Audi exclusive and Audi exclusive line offer further individualised options.

The A4 Saloon’s luggage compartment still has its 480-litre capacity – 962 litres with the rear seats folded down. The A4 Avant and the A4 allroad quattro have 490 and 1,430 litres, respectively, with Audi offering an optional electrically-operated tailgate for both models.

Engines –UK engine line-up details TBC

The new A4’s drive system sets new standards. The consumption levels have dropped by 11 percent on average, despite the increased power and torque of many of the engines. In the UK, Audi will offer a choice of five diesel and four petrol engines for both the Saloon and the Avant. All engines are supercharged direct-injection systems; the start-stop system and the recuperation system are standard throughout.

The TDI engines combine pulling power with pioneering efficiency, with the four-cylinder versions presenting extensive modifications. A new centrifugal pendulum-type absorber (in the 2.0 TDI with 136PS, 163PS or 177PS with quattro drive) in the dual-mass flywheel makes engine running even more refined and quieter at low revs, for even earlier upshifting and better fuel efficiency.

The most economical variant in the model family is the Audi A4 2.0 TDI with 136PS. In the Saloon, this engine helps the car achieve 67.3mpg on the combined cycle – a CO2 equivalent of just 112 grams per km. The new A4 2.0 TDI with 163PS, also optimised for maximum efficiency, achieves 64.2mpg. This equates to 115 grams CO2 per km. Both engines are available for the Saloon and the Avant.

In addition, two other four-cylinder diesel engines are available – with 143PS and 177PS. They can also be ordered for the allroad quattro, apart from the entry-level version. Three V6 TDI units complete the line. The 3.0 TDI with 204PS (not for the allroad quattro) is the most efficient six-cylinder engine in its class worldwide; in the A4 Saloon it helps the car achieve 57.6mpg on the combined cycle. The second variant, the 3.0 TDI, generates 245PS.

The A4 series also presents the latest state of the art in petrol engine technology. A new highlight of the TFSI family is the new 1.8-litre engine, available for the Saloon and the Avant. The four-cylinder engine delivers sporty thrust, with a power output of 170PS and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque, and impressive economy figures of 50.4mpg and 134 grams CO2 per km. That is an efficiency improvement of 19 percent compared with the predecessor engine.

The new 1.8 TFSI engine features many innovations: in the control of its valves and their lift, in the novel thermal management system, in the fuel injection system, in the turbocharger and in the integration of the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. The engine weighs 3.5 kilograms less and its internal friction has sharply decreased.

The entry-level petrol engine is the 1.8 TFSI with 120PS. The 2.0 TFSI – as the only spark-ignition engine also available in the A4 allroad quattro – delivers 211PS. At the top of the line is the 3.0 TFSI in the sporty S4, which develops an impressive 333PS.

Drivetrain

The wide range of drivetrains is typical of Audi. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Saloon and Avant models with front-wheel drive; most variants offer continuously variable multitronic as an option. The quattro versions have either the manual transmission or the seven-speed S tronic on board. The A4 allroad quattro employs a manual transmission or S tronic with all engine versions.

The innovative thermal management system shortens the warm-up phase of the manual transmission, among other things, and thereby reduces friction loss. All transmissions are distinguished by convenient and precise operation, high efficiency and a wide spread of gear ratios – the long ratios in the higher gears reduces fuel consumption, while the short ratios in the lower gears benefit the dynamics.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive is standard on the A4 allroad quattro, and available in the Saloon and Avant from the 2.0 TDI with 177PS. The A4 family uses the self-locking centre differential here. In regular driving operation it primarily transmits the engine torque to the rear wheels in the ratio of 40 to 60. If necessary, redistribution occurs within the shortest possible time. The torque vectoring function supplements the work of the centre differential with finely incremented brake applications, to make handling even more precise and safer.

In the V6 quattro variants Audi offers the sport differential as a supplement, lending maximum precision and high traction to the A4 when cornering at the handling limits. The high-end component actively distributes the power between the rear wheels as required.

Chassis

The chassis of the A4 is striking with its sporty precision, high ride comfort and superior safety. The mounts of the rear suspension control arms and the characteristics of the shock absorbers have been even more finely tuned. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminium.

The electromechanical power steering is new in all models of the series. The direct gear ratios convey precise road contact; slight brake applications counteract pulling to the side on unevenly slippery surfaces. The electromechanical power steering requires no energy for straight-ahead motion, thereby reducing fuel consumption. This is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 7 g/km.

Another high-end feature that gives the A4 a special status in its class is Audi drive select. In the basic package, the driver can switch the characteristic of the accelerator, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the power steering and the automatic air conditioning between the four modes “comfort,” “auto,” “dynamic” and “efficiency.” If there is an onboard navigation system, the additional “individual” mode is also included.

Further modules are optional – adaptive cruise control or the cruise control system, the sport differential, the suspension with damper control and dynamic steering. By means of a superposition gear, the gear ratio is adjusted in a continuously variable manner depending on the driven speed; at the handling limits small interventions compensate for understeering and oversteering.

All front-wheel-drive versions of the A4 feature the electronic stability program (ESP) with electronic limited slip differential. In dynamic driving the system further improves handling and safety by initiating minimum brake interventions at the front wheel that is subject to a reduced load on the inside of the curve. The large wheel brakes – with ventilated front and rear disks in many variants – offer excellent stopping power and can be precisely modulated.

All A4 variants roll off the assembly line on elegant aluminium wheels, starting from 16 inches in size. The line of option tyres ranges to 19 inches with 255/35 series tyres. Four of the 18 available wheels are new designs. The A4 allroad quattro offers four independent designs.

Assistance systems

Audi offers highly developed assistance systems for the A4 family, for making driving even more relaxed. Standard on all variants is the new driver information system with break recommendation – it detects and draws the driver’s attention to deviations from typical driving behavior on the basis of steering motions and other parameters.

The adaptive cruise control assistance system keeps the A4 at a constant distance from the preceding vehicle at speeds between 19 and 124 mph. If the threat of a rear-end collision becomes imminent at speeds below 18 mph, the system will execute a full brake application. Audi active lane assist helps the driver stay in lane. A camera detects the lane markings and the system makes slight corrections to the steering if necessary. Audi side assist monitors the space behind the A4 by radar and detects any vehicles in the blind spot, for example.

Infotainment systems

Audi offers a whole kit of state-of-the-art infotainment systems for its A4 series. The chorus CD radio with eight speakers is standard, while the MMI navigation plus system with large hard disk, colour monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player forms the top of the line. Voice control and the optional digital audio broadcasting (DAB) are further improvements to the system.

The high-end supplement to the MMI navigation plus system is the Bluetooth online car phone. Via Audi connect, the system provides special services in the car, such as voice-controlled Google searches for points of interest (POI) and navigation with Google Earth pictures, along with Google Street View. Audi online traffic information (available in 2012), another such service, gives the driver the latest news on congestion along the selected route. The WLAN hotspot, another feature of the Bluetooth online car phone, allows passengers in the A4 to surf the internet and send emails as they please with their mobile devices.

The Audi S4

The Audi S4, available in the Saloon and Avant versions, employs the most powerful engine in the line – the 3.0 TFSI with 333PS and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) torque. The Saloon can achieve 35.3mpg despite impressive acceleration of 0 to 62mph in 5.0 seconds and an electronically-limited maximum speed of 155 mph.

The modified Audi S4 is identifiable from the changes to the headlights, the bumpers, the air inlets and colours. The interior also contains subtle changes in appearance. The S sport suspension and 18-inch wheels featured on the S4 deliver outstanding road grip.

On the eve of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt Audi presented its new DTM vehicle: After the V8 quattro (1990 to 1992) and the A4 (2004 to 2011) the brand with the four rings has opted to use a two-door coupe in the most popular international touring car series for the first time.

The new Audi A5 DTM, which bears the internal project name “R17″ at Audi Sport, conforms to the new Technical Regulations that will come into effect in the 2012 season. The project was premised on three key aims: the safety of the vehicles, reduction of the costs by up to 40 per cent and a spectacular exterior design.

IAA visitors will have the opportunity to get a first-hand impression of the new car’s look at the Audi Hall from September 13th to 25th. The Audi A5 DTM appears lower and sturdier than its successful predecessor with which Audi has won four of the last seven DTM titles. Underneath the body, which is completely made of carbon, a new type of chassis features a hybrid construction. The combination of a carbon fibre monocoque and steel cage sets new standards in terms of safety for a race touring car. In addition, the chassis is one of more than 50 components which are identical for all DTM vehicles.

“Due to these shared components it was possible to achieve the cost reduction target of up to 40 per cent without compromising on the safety and attractiveness of the DTM vehicles,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, who has been in charge of the new Audi A5 DTM development.

The A5 DTM is 5.01 metres long, 1.95 metres wide and 1.15 metres low. The wheelbase of all DTM vehicles is identical, i.e. 2,750 millimetres. Like its predecessor, the A5 DTM is powered by a V8 engine with an output of about 340 kW (460 HP). The six-speed transmission, now pneumatically operated using paddle shifters in the steering wheel, is a new development. The shifting events are more precise compared with conventional manual gearshifts and allow the mileage of the unit to be quadrupled to up to 24,000 kilometres.

The engine electronics (Bosch MS 5.1), which operate without fuses, and the central display that is already being used in the Audi R8 LMS are state-of-the-art as well. The exclusive tyre partner Hankook is supplying larger and wider tyres with dimensions resembling those of LMP2 sports cars.

A safety fuel tank with a capacity of 120 litres is integrated with the carbon fibre cell of the Audi A5 DTM. It would allow the current distance of a DTM race to be covered without a refuelling stop. For longer races a quick refuelling system is in development.

The engine sub-frame at the front and the transmission at the rear are identical for all DTM cars and limit the freedom of the engineers with respect to the suspension, which has to be mounted to these shared components. In addition, steel as the material for the A-arms and the tube dimensions are specified. For the hub carrier, the regulations define the material and the production process to be used. A milled aluminium part with a minimum weight is prescribed. Furthermore, a strict provision in the regulations defines the wheel hubs and the rims for all entrants.

The possibilities in the area of aerodynamics are restricted as well. Air flow through the body, as in the case of the current A4 DTM, and complex additional wings at the rear are no longer allowed. This creates a stronger visual resemblance between the race car and the production model. At the same time the new DTM vehicles are to respond less sensitively to body contact with other vehicles and deliver slipstream improvements – also thanks to the larger rear wing.

“In the past, Audi has had very innovative solutions particularly in the area of aerodynamics in the DTM,” says Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Engineering at Audi Sport. “Since these areas have been subjected to severe restrictions good detailed solutions will now be crucial to achieving advantages over the competition.”

The “R17″ project was launched in May 2010 and a month later the decision was made that the A5 would serve as the base model. Trials in the model wind tunnel have been run since February 2011. The roll-out was successfully performed on July 29, 2011 by Martin Tomczyk. Since then testing of the A5 DTM has been in progress. The homologation of the A5 DTM is scheduled for March 1, 2012 – until then the engineers at Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm still have time to fine-tune the detailed solutions.

The front-wheel drive TT RS powered by an engine with an output of about 279 kW (380 HP) has been developed by quattro GmbH in collaboration with Technical Development of AUDI AG for the SP4T class of the VLN Endurance Championship and extensively tested for about one year. After class victory at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in June, the testing phase culminated in an impressive performance at the 6-hour race on the world’s toughest race track at the end of August: the first pole position of a front-wheel drive vehicle in the history of the VLN and overall victory ahead of rivals with higher power ratings.

“In the TT RS Audi is making the next attractive customer sport race car available to interested teams,” says Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “In line with the products our customers have come to expect of us, the TT RS is another car that has been designed for a wide range of racing conditions and easy handling. The TT RS perfectly mastered the load at the 24-hour race while being able to prove its exceptionally forgiving handling characteristics at the 6-hour race in the unpredictable conditions of constantly changing weather.”

As a production-derived unit the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine is designed for extremely high mileage. Its power drives the front wheels via a sequential six-speed racing transmission. Paddle shifters allow customers to fully concentrate on the action on the race track.

Audi has developed a race car body for the TT RS that is designed for maximum safety and high aerodynamic efficiency. But downforce is not the only thing that helps to put the power on the road. A sophisticated racing suspension with a wide range of adjustment options that are easy to operate assures supreme road-holding and particularly good balance.

Audi Sport customer racing offers the ready-to-race TT RS to its customers at the price of 180,000 euros (net). “For this model we also provide optimal support to our customers,” says Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH who is responsible for the customer activities at Audi. “They benefit from our experience with the R8 LMS and the extensive testing program we have completed with the TT RS. Customers can look forward to a reliable, easy-to-drive and affordable high-tech sports car plus the Audi service to which they have become accustomed.”

A highly-charged atmosphere is guaranteed on the Audi stand at the 2011 Frankfurt Show as the futuristic A2 concept is confirmed as the third all-electric Audi design study to take the limelight for the Vorsprung durch Technik brand. Although more familiar in form than the two radically styled urban concept electric studies, the four-seat A2 concept is similarly forward-looking. Its exceptionally weight-conscious and space-efficient packaging is achieved using state-of-the-art multi-material hybrid construction, and its space-age specification includes contact-free battery charging, ‘by-wire’ steering and braking, LED matrix lighting technology and a semi-autonomous running mode.

Advanced Audi ultra-lightweight construction techniques limit the weight of this latest technology study to just 1,150kg. For the first time it unites hybrid multimaterial construction, in which very different materials are combined with one another, with the Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction principle. The superstructure is made largely from aluminium, complemented by add-on parts in Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The 18-inch alloy wheels also shave off around 2kg each compared with conventional equivalents thanks to cladding technology which greatly reduces the amount of material used.

The Audi A2 concept is a purely electric vehicle. A lithium-ion battery mounted in its sandwich floor stores 31 kWh of energy, 24 kWh of which is usable. The electric motor is transversely mounted in the front, and delivers 116PS of peak power (80PS continuous) and 270 Nm of torque (160 Nm continuous) to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission.

This power output permits a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 93mph, the latter electronically limited in the interest of driving range, which stands at 124 miles according to the European driving cycle test.

It takes roughly 1.5 hours to fully recharge the battery with 400 volt three-phase current and approximately four hours with 230 volt household current. The Audi A2 concept is also designed for the new contactless charging technology (Audi Wireless Charging).

The charging socket and the cooling water connection are concealed at the front of the car behind the upper portion of the single frame grille. The lower section of the grille acts as an air inlet, and incorporates highly efficient cooling elements made of graphite foam. The lightweight mineral is an excellent conductor of heat from the water to the ambient air. Eight blocks with six graphite elements each are located in the central air inlet.

McPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle provide agile handling with the help of steering and brake systems which are purely electric (steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire), requiring no mechanical or hydraulic connection to the steering wheel or the pedals, respectively.

Semi-autonomous driving

The A2 concept can also cruise ‘semi-autonomously’, a benefit designed specifically to take some of the strain out of driving in slow-moving traffic. Two large inward-pointing touch-sensitive pads are used to control all the car’s key operating functions bar the turn indicators and the windscreen wipers, and if both these touch pads are touched simultaneously the car enters this ‘semi-autonomous’ mode. In this mode, the driver can manually intervene and regain full control of the vehicle at all times, as is currently the case with the Adaptive Cruise Control with stop & go function on which the new technology is based.

Another highlight of the A2 concept is the matrix beam LED headlights. An entire bundle of small light-emitting diodes arranged one above the other produce the low beam and high beam light. Microreflectors enable the precise positioning of the light. The LEDs can be switched on and off independently to illuminate the road perfectly in any situation. Numerous mini-LEDs set in the lower section of the headlight produce the daytime running light.

The adaptive tail lights also use matrix beam technology. The system uses a sensor to detect how good visibility is and adjusts the brightness accordingly.

Five laser diodes produce the rear fog light. When visibility is good, their light is invisible. In the fog or rain, however, it strikes the water particles in the air and becomes clearly visible as a floating triangle.

Audi dynamic lights in profile

Each flank of the Audi A2 concept is also embellished by a band of light that connects the headlights with the tail lights. These Audi dynamic lights are produced using light-emitting diodes and light guides. When in standby-mode, the several centimetre-wide band is coloured black, but when the holder of the key to the Audi A2 concept approaches, it lights up blue and intensifies illumination of the door handles. These are inset into the band and extend when the driver swipes a hand over them.

The dynamic light shines bright orange when the A2 concept is driving. It pulses on the corresponding side when indicating a turn, and when braking, a red pulse of light runs along the flank as a warning for other road users.

Despite a ‚footprint‘ spanning just 3,804 millimetres in length, 1,693 millimetres in width and 1,494 millimetres in height, the A2 concept offers seating for four and space for luggage in a cabin that perfectly reflects the philosophy behind the Audi A2 concept. It is light, clean, open, and spacious with intuitive controls. The dashboard is split into two sections, with the semi-circular left section enclosing the driver’s area. Audi dynamic light runs along the edges in two separate arcs from the doors to the cockpit, welcoming passengers in a manner similar to the light band on the exterior.

The architecture of the interior takes advantage of the possibilities afforded by the electric drive system. There is no centre tunnel; the console between the front seats can be lowered to allow free passage through the vehicle. Heating and cooling air flows indirectly and draft-free through a perforated surface beneath the windscreen.

The steering wheel of the Audi A2 concept is flattened at the top and bottom, with a single spoke connecting the ring to the impact absorber and the two large touch pads controlling many functions protruding inwards.

An open, shell-like section serves as the steering column and extends horizontally into the cockpit. On the far end is a seven-inch display flanked by two secondary displays with the speedometer and the power meter.

When the driver pushes the button to activate the electric drive, an animated band of light encircles the driver and passenger, and two touchpads unfold to the right of the steering wheel. The small touch surface on the left is for shifting gears (shift-by-wire); the larger one on the right is reserved for the air conditioning and media functions.

Evolution of MMI Touch

The retractable console between the seats includes an additional touchpad for entering letters and numbers and for secondary functions – a further development of today’s MMI touch. A docking station for the iPhone completes the control concept.

The show car has all of the Audi connect technologies on board. The Bluetooth online car phone connects it to the Internet via a Universal Mobile Telecommunications Standard (UMTS) module, a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) hotspot lets the passengers surf and e-mail from their mobile devices, while a fast data connection delivers specially prepared news and information to the vehicle. The services currently offered by Audi are of course also available for navigation: the Google Earth-enhanced mapping, Audi online traffic information, Google Points of Interest (POI) search via voice control and Google Street View.

The opaque glass roof of the show car is finished in flat Electric White, and becomes transparent at the push of a button. When an electric voltage is applied, small particles integrated into the glass align so that the light can pass through the glazing unhindered. When the glass roof is darkened, however, it blocks the infrared component of the sunlight almost completely, effectively shadowing the interior. This is a further contribution to efficient temperature management in the purely electric powered Audi A2 concept.

Cut-outs in the backrests of the four individual seats give them a sporty look and make them incredibly light. They have an aluminium chassis and the developers used a polymer blow-moulding process for the shells. Three struts connect the seats with the floor for more foot room in the back, and there are storage bins beneath the fold-up seat cushions.

A console with storage bins is located between the rear seats. Folding these seats forward reveals a fixture for the fork of a special city bicycle. The luggage compartment of the Audi A2 concept has a sandwich floor. A fold-up frame with two solid, high-load nets covers the lower load level.

The colours and materials in the interior support the impression of lightness and functionality. The large areas from the door top shoulders to the floor are covered in a tough material with a neoprene surface feel. A ribbed material made from recycled polyester covers the central floor area. Aluminium elements accentuate the cockpit.

The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show will play host to four new high-performance Audi S models sharing one remarkable new eight-cylinder engine which enables them to counterbalance outputs of up to 520PS with the potential for up to 29mpg*. The new bi-turbo V8, incorporating cylinder on demand technology and a host of other advances, replaces the naturally aspirated V10 FSI engine in the all-new S6, S6 Avant and S8 models, and in the process improves economy by as much as 25 per cent. It is also at the heart of a completely new addition to the S quattro Series – the new S7 Sportback.

The Audi S6 and S6 Avant

In the S6 and S6 Avant the new 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 delivers ample power with ‘real world’ fuel economy in keeping with the times. It appears here in 420PS form, and provides a constant 550 Nm of torque from 1,400 to 5,300 rpm, enough to catapult the S6 from 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds and the S6 Avant in 4.9 seconds, and to spur them on to an electronically governed top speed of 155mph.

The 4.0 TFSI brings Audi’s downsizing strategy to the high-performance class. Compared to the 5.2-litre V10, it offers even stronger performance while reducing fuel consumption by as much as 25 per cent. Average fuel economy is 29.1mpg* in the S6 and 28.8mpg* in the S6 Avant, well above that of the competition.

Active noise cancellation

A number of technologies contribute to this impressively uncompromising performance, including the familiar recuperation and start-stop systems, and also a new “cylinder on demand” cylinder management system which deactivates four of the engine’s eight cylinders under part load to conserve fuel and improve efficiency. When this process takes place the Active Noise Cancellation system (ANC) is activated. Four microphones integrated into the headlining record the noise in the cabin, which is then analyzed by a computer. If the computer detects intrusive sound elements, it broadcasts an antiphase sound through the speakers of the sound system. This sound combines with the intrusive sound and largely cancels it out.

Independent of this, active, electronically controlled engine bearings use targeted counterpulses to attenuate low-frequency vibrations. A sound actuator, flaps in the exhaust system, the engine shroud and a newly developed two-mass flywheel with a centrifugal force pendulum in the seven-speed S tronic also contribute to the sonorous sound and smoothness of the engine.

When it comes to power transmission, the S6 and S6 Avant also exemplify Vorsprung durch Technik. Power is channeled through a fast-shifting, seven-speed S tronic transmission to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which incorporates a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring.

The two new S models are fitted as standard with adaptive air suspension in its firmer ‘sport’ configuration. The tautly tuned air suspension with variable damping lowers the body by 10 millimetres, and provides for highly precise handling without compromising comfort. 19-inch cast aluminium wheels in a unique five parallel spoke design frame the black calipers of the powerful front and rear internally ventilated disc brakes, which can be replaced by carbon fibre-ceramic discs as an option.

Audi drive select

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is also standard. It influences numerous features within the car, including the throttle pedal response, the shift points of the S tronic transmission, the servo boost of the electromechanical steering and the characteristics of the adaptive air suspension. The driver can adjust the operation of these systems in five stages.

The structure of the cars themselves also plays a significant part in their dramatically improved dynamics. They are unusually lightweight because their bodies are roughly 20 per cent aluminium. The Audi S6 has a kerb weight of just 1,895 kilograms, and the S6 Avant 1,950 kilograms – both comparatively impressive figures for eight-cylinder executive class cars.

At 4,931 millimetres, the S6 is 16 millimetres longer than the A6; with the 4,634-millimetre S6 Avant, the difference is 8 millimetres. Their single-frame grille sports aluminium applications and chromed horizontal double bars. Another chrome strip adorns the front bumper. The exterior mirrors feature aluminum-look housings, and the side sills are distinctively shaped. Xenon headlamps incorporating LED daytime running lights and all-weather lights are standard, as are LED rear lights.

The S6 saloon has a spoiler on the boot lid; the Avant has a roof spoiler. With both models, the diffuser on the rear bumper is platinum grey with an aluminum-look offset edge. The four chrome-tipped tailpipes are elliptical. The S models are available in a choice of eight colours, including the exclusive shades Estoril Blue, crystal effect and Prism Silver, crystal effect. The body displays S6 and V8T badges.

The interior of the S6 and S6 Avant continues the sporting theme in an equally understated and elegant way. There are S6 badges on the key, the leather sports steering wheel and the instruments. The illuminated door sill trims and the displays for the MMI and the driver information system also highlight the S6 logo on start-up. A red ring adorns the start-stop button, an aluminium clasp the selector lever. The footrest, the pedals and the soft keys of the MMI operating system are finished with a gleaming aluminium look.

WLAN connectivity

As befits an S model the equipment list for the new S6 and S6 Avant is exhaustive, and can be supplemented by all of the high-end options in the A6 model series. These include LED headlights, adaptive light, head-up display, the parking system plus with 360° camera, powered rear hatch control including optional sensor control, a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system and MMI navigation plus incorporating the MMI touch input system, which when combined with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone with SIM access profile enables in-car internet connection.

From the list of driver assistance options customers can also choose the various versions of the Audi pre sense safety system, adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, Audi side assist, active lane assist, the speed limit display and the night vision assistant with highlighting of detected pedestrians.

The list of options for the Avant, which offers up to 1,680 litres of luggage space, also includes the panoramic glass roof.

The Audi S7 Sportback

The Audi S7 Sportback uses the same engine as the S6 and S6 Avant – the new 4.0 TFSI with 420PS and 550 Nm of torque. The twin-turbo V8 accelerates the five-door coupe from 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, and top speed is limited to 155mph. The cultivated eight-cylinder, which uses Audi’s “cylinder on demand” technology under part load, achieves an impressive combined economy figure of 29.1mpg*.

Much of this groundbreaking efficiency can be attributed to the lightweight body. A hybrid aluminum construction, it weighs roughly 15 percent less than a comparable all-steel body. Lightweight components include the long rear hatch that opens and closes electrically as standard. Beneath it is a luggage compartment with a volume of 535 litres, which increases to 1,390 litres with the rear seat backs folded down.

Power transmission in the Audi S7 Sportback is taken care of by the seven-speed S tronic transmission and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring.

The S7 Sportback is fitted as standard with adaptive air suspension sport and the Audi drive select dynamics system. Mounted behind the 19-inch wheels are large, internally ventilated disc brakes front and rear. Their black calipers are stamped with S7 logos at the front. Carbon fibre-ceramic discs are available as an option. Other chassis options include 20-inch wheels and dynamic steering, which varies its ratio as a function of speed.

The design of the Audi S7 Sportback is seamless. The long bonnet, the long wheelbase and the short overhangs create perfect proportions. The swooping roof line gives the five-door model the character of a coupe. At motorway speeds, a rear spoiler extends from the rear hatch to improve stability.

Subtle yet eye-catching details signal the top position in the model series occupied by the 4,980-millimetre S7 Sportback. These can be found at the single-frame grille, the front bumper, the side mirrors, the sills, the rear bumper, the diffuser and the tailpipes. Nine exterior colours are available, including the exclusive shades Estoril Blue, crystal effect and Prism Silver, crystal effect. The body is decorated with S and V8 T badges.

Interior

The S7 Sportback shows its character in the interior, too. This can be seen in numerous details – the S badges, the red ring on the start-stop button, the

S7 logo in the illuminated door sill trims, the aluminium strip on the S tronic selector lever and the aluminium shift paddles. The footrest and the pedals are made of stainless steel, and the soft keys of the MMI operating system are in an aluminium-look finish.

Among the standard equipment highlights are xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, the driver information system with colour display and the versatile MMI radio plus audio and operating system. Both information hubs are easy to operate.

The S7 Sportback can be equipped with all of the comfort, driver assistance and infotainment options available throughout the model series.

The Audi S8

The Audi S8 is the new head of the Audi S model family – a large and luxurious saloon that can deliver sublime comfort or supreme excitement as required. The new 4.0-litre TFSI in the S8 generates no less than 520PS and delivers a constant 650 Nm of torque to the crankshaft between 1,700 and 5,500 rpm. The result is outstanding performance: the sprint from zero to 62mph takes just 4.2 seconds, and top speed is electronically capped at 155mph.

This makes the fuel consumption of the sonorous and smooth twin-turbo V8 all the more amazing: It averages 27.7mpg* on the combined cycle, a considerable gain over its competitors, and its predecessor – the 5.2-litre V10 in the previous S8 posted 21.4mpg in the equivalent test. This has been achieved despite a 70PS increase in output.

The new Audi S8 strikes its impressive balance between performance and efficiency with the help of the combined technologies of the Audi modular efficiency platform, including the recuperation and start-stop systems. The newly developed “cylinder on demand” technology also plays a very significant role. Under part load, it deactivates four of the eight cylinders for an efficiency gain that is particularly pronounced at moderate motorway speeds. A package of acoustic measures including the Active Noise Cancellation system suppresses possible intrusive noise and vibrations.

The eight-speed tiptronic in the S8 also unites sportiness and efficiency. It uses tall gears at low revs whenever possible, but downshifts quickly and comfortably when requested by the driver. The tiptronic delivers the power to a quattro drivetrain combining a self-locking centre differential with the sport differential on the rear axle. During dynamic driving, the lion’s share of the power flows to the outside wheel to literally push the large saloon into the corner.

Chassis

The new Audi S8 also pulls out all the stops when it comes to the chassis. One of its features is a specially tuned adaptive air suspension with variable damping, which can vary the ride height of the body between three levels and thus ensure a multi-faceted driving experience. It perfectly complements the dynamic steering, also a standard feature, that adapts its steering ratio and boost to the vehicle’s speed. It uses slight, nearly imperceptible steering corrections to stabilize handling at the cornering limit.

The Audi drive select dynamics system encompasses these two systems as well as engine management, the eight-speed tiptronic and the sport differential. The driver can determine the function of these components by choosing between the five modes comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and efficiency.

The standard, S-specific wheels measure 9 J x 20 and are shod with 265/40-series tyres. The four internally ventilated disc brakes measure 400 millimetres in diameter up front and 365 millimetres at the rear. The matt black calipers up front bear S8 logos. Each of the optional carbon fibre-ceramic discs saves over five kilograms of weight. Their calipers are anthracite grey. The ESP stabilization program includes a sport mode, in which engine output is determined solely by the position of the pedals.

Body and design

A decisive advantage of the S8 is its comparatively low weight of 1,975 kilograms. The luxury saloon’s ASF (Audi Space Frame) body is made almost entirely of aluminium. Only the B-pillars are made of ultra high-strength steel. The body weighs just 231 kilograms; a conventional steel construction would be around 100 kilograms heavier. The Audi ultra-lightweight construction allows weight to be reduced in other areas as well, such as the chassis.

Fine design details signal the special position that the 5.15 metre-long S8 occupies in the Audi range. The single-frame grille is platinum grey and its eight double bars are covered in chrome. An aluminium-look blade makes the bumper appear sharper, and there are high-gloss black slats and aluminium-look ribs in the side air intakes.

On the flanks, body colour trim strips on the sills, door handles with strips of aluminium and polished aluminium-look mirror housings catch the eye. The diffuser insert at the back of the car includes a blade with a two-layer aluminium-look finish offset with parts in platinum grey. The exhaust system ends in two oval dual tailpipes in a chrome-look finish.

S8 or V8 T badges can be found at the front, on the boot lid and on the sides. The colour range includes 13 shades, two of which – Daytona Grey and Prism Silver – are reserved for the S8.

Inside, small yet effective accents mark out the top model in the A8 range. The multi-way, power-adjustable comfort sport seats have been designed exclusively for the S8. They are optionally available with exclusive seat upholstery in quilted lunar silver. The stitching and piping are in contrasting steel grey, while the upper inlays on the instrument panel and tiptronic selector lever are finished in Carbon Atlas.

The leather multifunction sport steering wheel has colour-contrasting stitching and an S8 emblem, which can also be found on the instruments. Typical of the Audi

S models, these have grey dials with white needles – a design which is repeated in the classic analogue clock. The illuminated door sill trims with the S8 logo are a further eye-catcher. The display of the driver information system and the MMI monitor greet the driver with special S8 screens. The shift paddles and pedals are in an aluminium-look finish; a red ring frames the start button.

The S8 offers a wide selection of interior colours, inlays and seat upholstery. These include particularly soft Valcona leather and seats with ventilation and massage functions. The leather package, a DVD changer, the convenience key with sensor-controlled boot lock and ambient lighting round out the list of standard equipment. The Audi S8 is also equipped with LED headlights and double glazing.

Beyond the generous standard equipment, Audi makes all of the high-end options from the A8 series available in the new S8. The driver assistance systems, which are closely networked with one another and the navigation system, are particularly innovative.

The core of these is the adaptive cruise control system with stop & go function; others include Audi side assist, Audi lane assist, the speed limit display and the night vision assistant with highlighting of detected pedestrians.

Supplementing these technologies is the Audi pre sense safety system, which is available in a number of versions. A new break recommendation function uses steering motions and additional parameters to detect if the driver is getting tired and issues an appropriate warning.

Advanced parking system new to the range

New to the A8 family is the parking system with 360° camera. Four small cameras record images of the saloon’s immediate surroundings and a computer splices them together. The driver can call up a variety of views on the MMI monitor, including a virtual top-down view. The system enhances safety while manoeuvring and in narrow driveways. Special views allow the driver to see cross-traffic.

MMI navigation plus, which features as standard, represents the state-of-the-art in infotainment systems. It includes the groundbreaking MMI touch input system, a large hard drive and a high-resolution 8-inch display. The high-end system can be combined with a Bluetooth online car phone to bring special Internet services to the car and provide WLAN connectivity for mobile devices.

Luxury class grandeur meets compact class efficiency in the Audi A8 hybrid, which this week has been given the green light for series production beginning in 2012, and will reach the UK late next year. Employing a four-cylinder petrol engine for the first time in an Audi model at this level, the Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s latest paragon of economy will offer performance befitting its 245PS and 480Nm outputs, despite delivering more uncharacteristic sub-148g/km CO2 output and all-electric, completely local emissions-free running at speeds of up to 62mph.

The Audi flagship model is designed as a highly efficient parallel hybrid. Its 2.0-litre TFSI engine, which has been modified in some areas, generates an output of 211PS and makes a 350 Nm torque peak available between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm. The combustion engine works together with a disc-shaped electric motor which generates 40 kW (54 PS) and 210 Nm.

The permanent magnet synchronous motor is mounted in the space usually occupied by the torque converter in front of the modified eight-speed tiptronic transmission. A multi-plate clutch that operates in an oil bath connects or disconnects the electric motor and the TFSI engine, and does so ultra-precisely and gently in all situations. The smooth and fast-shifting hybrid transmission guides the torque to the front wheels, and its wide gear spread contributes to the efficiency of the Audi A8 hybrid.

The short-term system output of 245PS and the system torque of 480 Nm serve to provide impressively strong response. According to the provisional figures generated by early-stage tests, the Audi A8 hybrid will be capable of reaching 62mph from rest in 7.7 seconds and continuing to a top speed of 146mph while returning in excess of 44mpg in the EU combined cycle test, along with CO2 emissions of less than 148 g/km.

The Audi A8 hybrid can drive at up to 62mph purely on electric power and has a range of up to 1.86 miles at a constant 37mph. This gives the driver the choice of three modes: The ‘EV’ setting gives priority to the electric drive, while the ‘D’ option efficiently controls both the engine and the electric motor. The ‘S’ mode and the tiptronic gate place the emphasis on optimal acceleration. The hybrid saloon has five operating states: with the TFSI engine alone, with electric drive only or in hybrid mode; recuperation and boosting are also possible. Two displays show the driver all operating modes in detail.

The lithium-ion battery, which weighs 36.7 kilograms, is located in a crash-proof area in the boot. It provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and up to 40 kW of power. Two different methods are used to air-cool the battery, depending on need: air is either blown from the passenger compartment by a fan or via a separate cooling circuit coupled to the automatic air conditioning system. The battery is thus kept within the temperature window required for it to perform to its full potential over a wide range. The electric motor and the compact power electronics which serve as a controller between the electric motor and the battery are water-cooled.

In visual terms, the Audi A8 hybrid is distinguishable by subtle details such as its 18-inch or optional 19-inch ten spoke alloy wheels which resemble turbine blades, hybrid badges and an exclusive Arctic Silver paint finish. The metallic paint finish is a standard feature, as are three-zone automatic air conditioning, LED headlights and a BOSE sound system.

Thanks to the brand’s ultra-lightweight construction expertise, the Audi A8 hybrid will be one of the lightest saloons in its category. Its ASF (Audi Space Frame) body is made almost entirely of aluminium, with ultra-high-strength steel used only for the B –pillars to optimise rigidity. Weighing just 231 kilograms, it is roughly 40 per cent lighter than a comparable steel construction.

An open-air Spyder version of the outlandish Audi urban concept is ready to make light work of the Frankfurt Motor Show next month (September 17-25) alongside the recently announced Sportback model. These radical and weight-optimized 1+1-seat technical studies are not descended from any previous Audi model – their development is based on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction.

The highly-concentrated look of the concepts, with their forward-urging lines, free- standing 21-inch wheels and protective surrounding plates incorporating strips of ‘blinking’ LED lights is dynamic and innovative, and lends a completely new impetus to the Audi design language. Characteristic features of the Spyder include its low, continuous window area and its doors that open upwards diagonally.

Inside there is sporty, low-slung seating for two mounted in a slightly staggered position and underpinned by carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) which integrates each seat undercarriage. All controls and materials are subject to the dictates of ultra-lightweight construction to ensure they convey a unique, sensory allure. The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals for his or her own driving position.

Two e-tron electric motors provide the propulsion – giving the ultra-light Audi urban concepts the ability to accelerate powerfully. A lithium-ion battery supplies the energy – ideal for extended city tours.

Audi is once again exploring new horizons with the Audi urban concept, a 1+1-seat, ultra-light car for congested urban spaces. The technical study confounds conventional car categories – the Audi urban concept combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept.

The Audi urban concept car is not descended from any previous model – its development is based on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of dynamic motion.

The stunning new concept has a sleek body. The wheels are free-standing, and the surrounding protective plates feature ‘blinking’ strips of LED lights. The highly-concentrated look of the technical study, with its forward-urging lines, is dynamic and emotional, and lends a completely new impetus to the Audi design language.

There is room for two people on board, their position slightly staggered and at a sporty, low level. All controls and materials are subject to the dictates of ultra-lightweight construction to ensure they convey a unique, sensory allure. The driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals for his or her own driving position. Entry to the car is through the tailgate, while the roof is designed to be manoeuvrable and slides to the rear to open. The Audi urban concept rides on 21-inch wheels.

The technology in the Audi urban concept reflects the full capabilities of the brand, especially when it comes to ultra-lightweight construction. The cockpit consists of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), which integrates the undercarriage of both seats.

Two e-tron electric motors provide the propulsion – providing the ultra-light Audi urban concept with the ability to accelerate powerfully. A lithium-ion battery supplies the energy – ideal for extended city tours.

Subtle re-sculpting and significant re-engineering will enable new generation Audi A5 and S5 Sportback, Coupe and Cabriolet models to slip even more elegantly, more nimbly and more cleanly through the air. Beyond their measured exterior and interior styling updates, infotainment technology advances and chassis modifications, the three ranges are also characterised by CO2 emission reductions of up to 22 per cent thanks to new and heavily revised engines and additional efficiency measures. UK orders for the new A5 and S5 models, which will be priced from £25,540 OTR, can be taken from September, ahead of first deliveries in December.

The key objective in updating the three ranges was to deliver major gains in efficiency without compromising on performance that fulfils the promise in the taut and muscular lines of the A5. This has been achieved primarily by introducing two new engines and completely redesigning others, but also by extending engine start-stop technology right across the range and replacing the hydraulic power steering system with a new electromechanical unit that demands no engine input when the wheel is in the straight-ahead position.

In realigning the engine range, Audi has remained true to its philosophy of using forced induction to compensate for cubic capacity in the interest of economy. The existing naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine has been replaced by a new 272PS version of the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 unit in A5 Coupe and Cabriolet variants. The existing 333PS version of this engine, which already powers the S5 Sportback and S5 Cabriolet, will also now replace the 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 in the S5 Coupe.

Equipped with its new and 20 per cent more efficient engine, and with standard S tronic twin clutch transmission in common with its Sportback and Cabriolet counterparts, the S5 Coupe can power to 62mph from rest in 4.9 seconds – a 0.2-second improvement over its V8-powered predecessor – on the way to a governed 155mph top speed. Combined fuel economy stands at 34.9mpg, a significant improvement over the tiptronic V8 Coupe’s 26.4mpg.

Completely redesigned entry engine

At the other end of the spectrum, the entry level 1.8-litre TFSI unit, which will be available across the ranges, has been completely redesigned. It features ground-breaking innovations in many areas, including control of the valves and their lift, thermal management, fuel injection, turbocharging and the integration of the exhaust manifold. With power increased from 160PS to 170PS, it effectively replaces the 180PS version of the four-cylinder 2.0-litre TFSI engine, and in the A5 Coupe combines best-in-class 49.6mpg economy potential with a 21 per cent reduction in CO2 output to 134g/km CO2.

The four-cylinder, 2.0-litre TFSI engine continues in 211PS form in all variants, offering up to 44.1mpg with CO2 emissions of as little as 149g/km.

New to the diesel-powered line-up is the 204PS version of the acclaimed 3.0-litre V6 TDI which has already brought exceptional economy and efficiency to the A6 Saloon, A7 Sportback and A8 luxury saloon. Replacing the outgoing 2.7-litre, 190PS V6 TDI, it can deliver up to 57.6mpg at the expense of just 129g/km of CO2 when it is installed in the front-wheel-drive A5 Coupe. The existing 3.0-litre TDI unit which works in conjunction with quattro all-wheel-drive also continues in upgraded 245PS form.

The efficiency standard-bearer in the new range will undoubtedly be the heavily modified 2.0-litre TDI, which with the potential for up to 60.1mpg and emissions of just 122g/km in the manual transmission A5 2.0 TDI Coupe sets new standards in the class.

Upgraded quattro system

As before, six-speed manual, seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch and eight-speed multitronic CVT transmissions will feature depending on the engine chosen, as will quattro all-wheel-drive. The 2012 Model Year A5 ranges upgrade to the latest system combining the crown gear centre differential – first seen in the RS 5 – with torque vectoring for even more effective torque distribution. The quattro system is offered as an optional extra for the 2.0-litre TFSI 211PS petrol and 2.0-litre TDI 177PS units, and as standard in conjunction with 3.0-litre TFSI 272PS and 3.0-litre TDI 245PS engines. As is always the case, the S models are quattro-equipped by definition.

Availability of the quattro rear sports differential, which further enhances agility and adjustability by enabling torque to be apportioned between the rear wheels, also now extends to all quattro-equipped models in the latest ranges.

With or without the quattro advantage the latest A5 models will cover ground even more effectively thanks to revisions to the predominantly aluminium lightweight suspension, and most notably to the damper settings and rear suspension bearings.

Especially keen drivers can specify the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system, which in its standard form allows them to fine-tune the amount of power steering assistance, the response of the throttle and the automatic transmission’s shift points. In its latest form, the system adds a fourth ‘Efficiency’ option to its settings list, which originally offered ‘Comfort’, ‘Auto’ and ‘Dynamic’ modes. In the Efficiency mode, all the above functions, plus the air conditioning unit, are configured for minimal power consumption.

If optional satellite navigation is fitted, Audi drive select also incorporates a fifth ‘Individual’ setting which allows even more precise tailoring of the various elements to suit personal preferences. For the ultimate in driver control, it will also be possible to specify additional ‘modules’ that add adjustable damping, variable ratio dynamic steering and the ability to fine-tune the sensitivity of the sport differential.

All three variants cut more of a dash visually too, thanks to gentle re-shaping of the bumpers, grilles, bonnets and front and rear light clusters which brings the A5 look subtly into line with the very latest Audi design language. The changes are particularly apparent in S line models, which now feature LED strip daytime running lights that virtually surround the headlight unit at the front, and newly designed LED strip lights at the rear. This striking light set-up can also be specified for all other versions at extra cost as part of a package that also includes adaptive swivelling headlights for improved corner illumination.

Further refined cabin ambiance

Inside, the A5 models have exceeded their own already regularly praised standards in their latest form. Among the detail changes to the premium quality cabin are new steering wheels, including an option for a flat-bottomed wheel, new steering column stalks and narrow chrome clasps framing the control elements. Also updated are the ignition key, the selector lever for the automatic transmission, the buttons for the optional Audi drive select system and seat heating/ventilation and the air conditioning and multifunction steering wheel controls. The bezels on the instrument cluster and centre console have a new finish, and there is also a new selection of upholstery and inlays.

The controls for the optional MMI navigation plus with its large hard drive, seven-inch colour monitor, 3D graphics and DVD player have also been improved. The number of hard buttons has been reduced from eight to four and the volume control now features a joystick cap for simpler track selection. Voice control and digital radio reception also received some fine-tuning.

Standard, SE and S line specification levels continue as before in Cabriolet and Sportback models, the latter now offering the extra cost option of three full seatbelts in the rear as an alternative to the existing two. The A5 Coupe previously offered a fourth Sport trim option, but now moves into line with its relatives.

An exciting new option available across the board is a high specification mobile phone interface offering online services, which not only brings a Google-powered Points of Interest search and navigation using Google Earth images, but also creates a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) hotspot within the A5 enabling occupants to connect phones and computers to the internet wirelessly.

Picture caption

Audi takes five to the fore - Subtly restyled and extensively re-engineered A5 and S5 Sportback, A5 and S5 Coupe and A5 and S5 Cabriolet models are announced this week. Prices start from £25,540 OTR, orders can be taken from September and deliveries are due to begin in December.

Note to Editors

In 2010 Audi recorded its best ever worldwide result of 1,092,400 sales, a 15 per cent improvement over 2009. In the UK, 99,828 Audi models found homes last year, a 9.5 per cent increase on 2009. To sustain the technological lead embodied in its Vorsprung durch Technik slogan, the brand plans to invest €11.6 billion, mainly in new products, between 2011 and 2015. By this point, its range will have expanded from today’s 35 models to a total of 42. Recent additions, including the A1 subcompact and the A7 Sportback, will be joined by, among others, the new A6 Avant and the Q3 compact SUV. The R8 e-tron, the first fully electric series production Audi model, will also arrive in late 2012. On the race circuit Audi Sport has contested the Le Mans 24-hour race twelve times since 1999, achieving a podium finish on all of these occasions as well as outright victory 10 times. In 2011, Audi won Le Mans with an entirely new TDI diesel-powered ‘closed’ coupe sports prototype, the Audi R18.

As the UK drifts inexorably towards another potentially slippery winter, Audi is bolstering the defences of its A7 Sportback range by offering quattro all-wheel-drive reassurance for more versions of the acclaimed executive class fastback. New 3.0-litre TDI quattro 204PS models will be available to order early next month to coincide with a new Standard trim level that will be available exclusively with this engine. In new Standard form the A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI will lower the range entry price to £39,995 OTR, with the new A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI quattro just above at £41,675 OTR.

The ‘entry level’ V6 TDI engine has until now been offered only in conjunction with front-wheel-drive and the eight-speed multitronic continuously variable transmission. In this form it powers the A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI 204PS to 62mph from rest in 7.4 seconds and on to a 146mph top speed, while at the same time offering the potential for 55.4mpg fuel economy with low 135g/km CO2 emissions.

This configuration, which is now available from £39,995 OTR, will continue alongside the new quattro all-wheel-drive version. Equipped with the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, the A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI quattro 204PS covers the 0-62mph sprint a fraction more quickly at 7.2 seconds, matches the 146mph top speed and offers up to 48.7mpg with CO2 emissions of 152g/km. Benefit-in-kind liability for business users stands at 20% in front-wheel-drive versions and 23% for the quattros.

Uncompromising standard specification

Just as the latest A7 TDI models manage to maintain impressive economy and emissions figures in quattro form, so the new Standard specification versions of these models deliver all the key features expected of a high end premium executive car. These include 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, Milano leather upholstery, the Multi Media Interface (MMI) with 6.5-inch colour display incorporating satellite navigation, Audi drive select adaptive dynamics, powered tailgate operation and light and rain sensors.

SE specification continues as before, and adds features such as the Audi Parking System Plus with audible and diagrammatical parking aids, cruise control, heated and electrically adjustable front seats and the Audi Music Interface iPod connection. The top rung belongs to the S line models, which upgrade further to 19-inch alloy wheels, Valcona leather upholstery, S line interior and exterior styling treatments, S line sports seats and S line sports suspension.

A new feature that will be common at all levels is the addition of a third rear three-point seatbelt which will enable the A7 Sportback to seat five adults when required. This will add a further element of practicality to the spacious interior, which can also provide up to 1,390 litres of load space when the split/folding rear seat is deployed.

Elsewhere it is business as usual for the range, which also includes a more powerful 245PS 3.0-litre TDI engine and naturally aspirated 204PS 2.8-litre or supercharged 300PS 3.0-litre petrol units, all of which are linked to quattro all-wheel-drive and S tronic transmission without exception. Innovative Audi thermal management technology, engine load-reducing electromechanical power steering, energy recuperation during coasting and braking and the engine start-stop function are also features of all models in the line-up.

Lighter than a conventional steel equivalent by 15 per cent through the use of a high proportion of aluminium, the streamlined body of the A7 Sportback is mounted on a completely new and exclusive-to-Audi platform employing advanced five link front and trapezoidal link rear suspension. This can be specified with a firmer, 10mm lower sport setting, an even more intensively handling-oriented S line configuration or an extensively revised version of the Audi adaptive air suspension system with three ride settings.

Dedicated drivers can also opt for advanced all-LED headlights, a thermal imaging camera for night vision and, for maximum benefit from the quattro system, a sport differential which can apportion torque between the rear wheels for even greater handling agility and adjustability. Options with a more business class slant include MMI Touch with its 8-inch monitor, fingertip sensitive touch pad, 3D navigation mapping and sizeable hard disk; a UMTS module with wireless WLAN link feeding the navigation system with Google Earth maps and creating a WiFi hotspot in the car for mobile internet access; and a head-up display.

The list of more indulgent luxuries includes comfort seats with heating, cooling and massaging functions, a parallel and perpendicular parking assistant, acoustic glazing, a 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with 1,300 watts of power, digital TV reception and ambient LED interior lighting.

The price of progress in the Audi A1 1.6 TDI falls even further from this week as an even more fuel efficient version of the frugal premium sub-compact hatchback shrugs off road tax and the London congestion charge through a lower 99g/km CO2 output. Improved 74.3mpg economy potential, and unchanged OTR prices for the SE, Sport and S line models ranging from £14,480 to £17,865, also help to make the thriftiest A1 an even more desirable proposition.

Further optimisation of the fuel system and engine management unit has reduced the CO2 output of the A1 1.6 TDI from 105g/km to 99g/km, and boosted its official combined economy figure from 70.6mpg to 74.3mpg. As before, the achievement of these outstanding figures is aided by engine start-stop and energy recuperation systems.

The performance delivered by the turbo charged and directly injected common rail unit also remains as keen as ever. The A1 1.6 TDI with five-speed manual transmission sprints from rest to 62mph in 10.5 seconds, and where conditions allow can reach a top speed of 118mph.

The advantage held by the revised 1.6 TDI won’t only be felt at the filling station. With CO2 dipping below the 100g/km mark it is exempt from the London congestion charge, and also from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) from year 2 onwards as the duty bandings currently stand. The majority of A1 models, including the 1.6 TDI, are already duty-free in the first year of ownership.

The A1 1.6 TDI with 99g output can be ordered in all three UK A1 trim levels – SE, Sport and S line. Features common to all include alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display.

This efficiency standard bearer is far from the exception to the rule for Audi. The Vorsprung durch Technik brand offers an exceptional range of models that champion the cause, the most notable being the three-door A3 1.6 TDI which can also offer 99g/km and 74.3mpg capability, the A4 TDI Saloon with 120g/km and 61.4mpg, the new A6 2.0 TDI saloon with 129g/km and 57.6mpg and the TT TDI quattro with 53.3mpg and 139g/km. Later in 2011, another highlight will be launched in the shape of the front-wheel-drive A8 3.0 TDI luxury saloon, combining 204PS with the potential to cover up to 47.1mpg while emitting just 159g/km of CO2.

The extreme Audi R8 GT quite literally gets its second wind this week as a new open-air Spyder version of the even more focused 560PS super car makes its debut. Distilling the celebrated R8 V10 formula into an even more concentrated form, the more intensively weight optimized GT soft-top will deliver its breathtaking pace and handling poise to just 66 customers in the UK, and a total of 333 worldwide. They will have the opportunity to formally register their interest in right-hand-drive versions of the new 197mph drop-head via Audi Centres or the audi.co.uk web site from today. Ordering will begin later this summer ahead of first customer deliveries in early 2012.

Thanks to Audi ultra lightweight technology, the flagship version of the high-performance open-top sports car has trimmed a full 85 kg from the already low weight of the R8 V10 Spyder, and as a result weighs in at just 1,640kg. This helps it to accelerate from zero to 62mph in 3.8 seconds and to reach a top speed of 197mph.

The Audi Space Frame (ASF) body with its cast nodes, extruded sections and aluminium panels, accounts for just 214 kg of the car’s total weight. It is assembled predominantly by hand in the R8 workshop at the Neckarsulm plant. Final assembly of the car takes place in the same way.

The engine frame is made of ultra-light magnesium; additional elements of the body are made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP). Together, these components provide a weight saving of 5.5 kg.

Visual modifications accentuate the styling of the R8 GT Spyder. These include additional contrasting titanium grey trim elements, a front splitter with a dual lip, flics at the sides of the front bumper, red GT badges, round exhaust tailpipes, an enlarged diffuser and dark LED tail lights in a clear-glass design. An optional windscreen frame in matte CFRP is also available.

Audi engineers also trimmed weight from the technical components in the transmission, wheels and brakes. In the interior, the bucket seats alone, with their chassis of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP), saved 31.5 kg.

In classic Audi fashion, the R8 GT Spyder features a lightweight fabric soft top that is extremely quiet even when motorway cruising at higher speeds. Its electrohydraulic drive raises or lowers it in 19 seconds, even at speeds of up to 31mph. The powered retractable glass rear window is nestled in the bulkhead, separate from the soft top. The bulkhead also incorporates a rollover protection system comprising two pre-tensioned plates.

Prodigious power: the drivetrain

The performance offered by the new top-of-the-line model in the R8 family is formidable. The 5.2-litre V10 with an aluminium crankcase draws its fuel from an FSI direct injection system. Dry-sump lubrication ensures a reliable supply of oil even under maximum lateral or straight-line acceleration.

With its modified electronic management, the long-stroke engine produces 540 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, and peak power of 560PS. In every situation, the engine impresses with its thrust and bite – and that unmistakable sound of an Audi ten-cylinder.

Gear changes in the R8 GT Spyder are handled by the R tronic sequential manual transmission without exception. Thanks to its electrohydraulic clutch and switching unit it shifts through each of its six gears within one tenth of a second at high load and engine speed, and it can operate in Normal, Sport and ‘manual’ modes.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system has a strong rear-wheel bias which is accentuated by the axle load distribution. If the situation calls for it, the system sends additional torque to the front axle. In tandem with the limited slip differential at the rear, it provides an added measure of high speed traction, stability and composure compared with more conventionally configured sports cars.

The suspension, too, works in favour of absolutely rewarding yet remarkably controllable handling. Aluminium double wishbones locate the wheels, and the rack-and-pinion power steering provides intimate feel and feedback. Taut tuning lowers the body by approximately 10 millimetres onto 19-inch wheels with 235/35 tyres up front and 295/30 tyres at the rear. The large, lightweight carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs decelerate the car with exceptional fade-free efficiency. The Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) has a sport mode and can also be deactivated entirely.

Pure comfort: the interior and equipment

Great attention to detail is evident in the materials and workmanship inside the car. The salient aspect of the controls is their logically structured design. The open two-seater offers a roomy interior, and its front end load area can accommodate up to 100 litres of cargo. The rear bulkhead houses three storage compartments.

The interior is finished in black and can be trimmed in a choice of titanium grey or crimson red for added refinement. Alcantara upholstery comes as standard, and also features on the sports steering wheel and inner windscreen rail.

Audi also offers leather in Fine Nappa quality. Numerous details – including white dials and R8 GT logos – emphasize this car’s very special position within the R8 range. The distinctive R8 “monoposto,” a large arch encircling the driver’s cockpit, is made of matte CFRP.

Audi ultra requires no sacrifice on the part of R8 GT Spyder owners. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, LED tail lights, an automatic air conditioning system, DVD-based satellite navigation and the driver information system with a built-in lap timer.

A sophisticated sound system from Bang & Olufsen and a Bluetooth interface including a seatbelt microphone allowing drivers to hold phone conversations on the move are also standard features.

A larger-than-life 503PS version of the smallest Audi to date makes its debut this week at Austria’s 30th annual Wörtherseetour meeting for fans of VW Group models. The one-off A1 clubsport quattro uses a heavily modified version of the RS 3 Sportback’s turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine to deliver electrifying performance which is headlined by figures including 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and 0-124mph in just 10.9 seconds.

The heart of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro is a classic Audi petrol engine – a five-cylinder unit displacing 2.5 litres with turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Compared with the version used in the Audi TT RS and RS 3 Sportback on which it is based, the output of the TFSI has been increased dramatically to 503PS and 660 Nm of torque. Maximum power is available between 2,500 and 5,300 rpm.

The turbocharger, intercooler, induction tract and the exhaust line have been systematically tuned for high performance. As on the Audi A4 DTM, the tailpipe is located on the left flank, just in front of the rear wheel.

Another area where the A1 clubsport quattro shines is in its overall weight of just 1,390 kilograms. This helps it to catapult from 0 to 62mph in 3.7 seconds, and from 0 to 124mph in just 10.9 seconds. The 50-70mph overtaking surge can be dispatched in fourth gear in just 2.4 seconds.

A six-speed manual transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, both taken from the TT RS and enhanced, deliver the power to all four wheels. Top speed is governed at 155mph.

The Audi showcar rolls on 255/30 low-profile tyres mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels with a unique turbine design. Sitting behind the wheels are large, internally ventilated disc brakes. Up front, six-piston callipers grab perforated carbon fibre-ceramic discs. Large steel discs are mounted on the rear axle. The coilover suspension of the A1 clubsport quattro features adjustable compression and rebound damping.

Dynamic and brawny: the exterior
Visually, the exquisitely finished show car makes no secret of its potential. The body has a Glacier White matte paint finish, with accents provided by many add-on parts. The roof arch in high-gloss black supports a roof made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and the four rings at the front of the car are solid aluminium.

Large, split air intakes with carbon struts are integrated into the distinctively modified front skirt. The single-frame radiator grille sports a black honeycomb design, and the headlights feature matted clasps with a red “wing”. Heat from the engine compartment is dissipated via two large air outlets in the bonnet.

The front wings, the doors and the rear side panels of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro have been widened by a total of 60 millimetres. They form horizontal “blister” edges, like those found on the Audi Ur-quattro. Air outlets are integrated into the rear ends of the wings, and the newly designed trim strips on the sills are made of exposed CFRP. Sleek side mirrors are reminiscent of the Audi R8 high-performance sports car.

The rear of the showcar is dominated by the roof spoiler, which features a double wing to provide for sufficient downforce. Darkly toned rear lights and a large, closed diffuser hone the rear view of the A1 clubsport quattro.

Designed as a road vehicle for the race track, the showcar has no rear seat. In its place are a large crossbar to urther stiffen the body and storage for racing helmets. A weight-optimised starter battery used in racing is mounted in the rear below the two storage compartments. The strict high-performance concept left no room for an infotainment system, an MMI monitor or even a loudspeaker. The lightweight bucket seats are taken from the Audi R8 GT and feature a chassis made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer. Red four-point belts secure the driver and passenger.

The interior of the showcar is a study in dark grey. Large areas are covered with exposed, matte-finished CFRP, including the walls in the rear section of the car, the tubes of the air vents and the “stern of the yacht” in the lower section of the centre console. The CFRP material used on the open-spoked sport steering wheel is covered with leather. Rocker switches on the centre console replace switches on the control stalk and in the door panels. Three additional instruments indicate the oil pressure, boost pressure and electrical system voltage.

The centre console and the seats are covered in fine leather upholstery with tone-on-tone stitching. The selector lever is made of aluminium; the caps of the pedals and the surface of the footrest are made of stainless steel. Red loops replace the handles on the doors, the glove box and the covers of the storage compartments.

The case for the Audi A6 Avant is about to stack up even more favourably as the all-new model makes its world debut in Berlin this week ahead of first UK orders in June and first deliveries in November. Priced from £32,100 OTR, the sleek and technologically-advanced newcomer delivers major efficiency improvements helped by state-of-the art construction processes which reduce weight by up to 70kg, and offers an impressive and increased carrying capacity of up to 1,680 litres. Another highlight, due later in 2011, will be a potent new 313PS twin-turbo V6 TDI engine which will be shared with the A6 Saloon.

The A6 Avant sets new standards with its low weight. Thanks to the use of aluminium components – which make up roughly 20 per cent of the body – gross weight has been reduced by as much as 70 kilograms, depending on engine, compared with the previous model. The A6 Avant 2.0 TDI, for example, has a kerb weight of just 1,640 kilograms.

The luggage compartment in this all-new Avant can be opened automatically simply by ‘gesturing’ with a foot to two sensors beneath the rear bumper if the optional advanced key feature is added. The A6 Avant has a capacity of 565 litres, which can be increased to 1,680 litres by folding down the rear seat backs. The load bay has luggage lashing eyes, side restraining straps, bag hooks, a double cargo floor, a rail luggage fixing system, a dirt-resistant tray and roof rails as standard. A through-load facility and a fixing set that uses the two standard rails in the cargo floor are optional.

Engines and transmissions
A choice of four engines featuring direct fuel injection will be available for the new

A6 Avant in the UK: one petrol engine and three TDI units. They develop between 177PS and 300PS, the top figure belonging to the supercharged 3.0 TFSI petrol model. The line-up also includes the 3.0-litre V6 TDI in 204PS and 245PS forms and the even more efficient 177PS 2.0-litre TDI, which with its 56.5mpg potential and low 132g/km CO2 output offers an outstanding combination of strong performance and comparatively low running costs.

Later in 2011 an all-new 3.0-litre twin-turbo TDI will be the most potent V6 and the fourth diesel-powered option in the range. Thanks to a two-stage turbocharger that delivers a maximum boost pressure of up to 3.2 bar, the TDI flagship will take just 5.4 seconds (preliminary value) to reach 62mph from rest, and will be electronically limited to a 155mph top speed.

All of the engines use the technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform, including the start-stop system, energy recuperation and the innovative thermal management system that quickly brings the coolant and motor oil up to operating temperature. These ancillary features make a major contribution to a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 18 per cent compared with the out-going model.

Transmission options, based on the engine choice, will include a manual six-speed transmission or multitronic CVT for front-wheel-drive models, and the new seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission for quattros. Each unit features a wide gear-ratio spread which gives a further boost to overall efficiency.

The latest generation quattro all-wheel-drive with a crown gear centre differential and a torque-vectoring function for optimum traction, stability and response will be standard for the 3.0 TDI 245PS and 3.0-litre TFSI petrol models. For the top-of-the-line engines, the quattro sport differential – which is capable of apportioning torque between the rear wheels – will also be offered as an option.

New energy-efficient electromechanical power steering, in conjunction with the lightweight suspension set-up with its considerable aluminium content, will further refine handling. The reduced unsprung mass will also favour ride comfort – which has already been highly praised in the A6 Saloon – and which can be enhanced even further if the optional adaptive air suspension is chosen.

The Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system will also be standard in the new A6 Avant, allowing drivers to fine-tune the car’s responses as desired via the Multi Media Interface (MMI) screen. In front-wheel-drive models the latest Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with electronic limited slip differential will help to maintain optimum control without impairing responsiveness during enthusiastic driving.

As Audi customers have come to expect, the spacious interior combines the latest Audi design language with the finest materials constructed to the very highest of standards, and embellishes this with exceptional technological input. The cabin’s focal point is the MMI with its 6.5-inch retractable monitor and large central control knob. MMI provides easy and intuitive access to the high quality audio system, the Bluetooth phone interface and the SD card-based navigation system which, uniquely in the premium sector at this level, is standard.

An eight-inch monitor and fingertip-sensitive touch pad are available as an upgrade from MMI to MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch. The system’s touch pad enables characters to be ‘drawn’ by the driver using an index finger for navigation or telephone data entry. As well as ultra-intelligent 3D navigation mapping, the upgraded MMI system can store audio tracks and telephone data on its sizeable hard disk.

Navigation with Google Earth mapping
Online services including news and weather information supplied by Google will be accessible if the Mobile Telephone Preparation High and MMI Navigation Plus options are specified. This option will enable drivers to plot detailed routes on a home computer and download them to the navigation system when they start a trip. Google Earth images will also be beamed via the car’s internal universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) module to the MMI monitor for navigation purposes. Through its wireless local area network (WLAN) link, passengers will also be able to connect to the internet with up to eight devices at once.

MMI navigation plus will be able to work closely with the optional assistance and safety systems in the new A6. It can forward route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, helping the car to match its system functions to its surroundings.

Also on the options list is a night vision assistant that uses a thermal-imaging camera to highlight ‘warm-blooded’ road users in front of the car, a head-up display and a park assist system which automatically takes care of steering to manoeuvre into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces. More familiar options such as the Audi side assist blind spot warning system, the Audi lane assist lane departure detection system and the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System are also available.

Two specification levels – SE and S line – will be offered in the UK, each including alloy wheels, leather upholstery, cruise and front and rear parking controls, SD-based satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone preparation, split/folding rear seats and light and rain sensors. S line models will add larger 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, sports suspension, upgraded Valcona leather upholstery and an exclusive S line exterior and interior styling treatment.

Estate of the nation – The capacious new Audi A6 Avant makes its world debut in Berlin this week, featuring a new 313PS twin-turbo TDI engine – which will be available later in 2011 – and employing the latest lightweight construction techniques, chassis design and technological advances to bring CO2 down to as little as 132g/km. OTR prices will start at £32,100.

The new Audi Q3 compact SUV is in good shape to take on the UK following the confirmation this week of keen pricing starting from £24,560 OTR, and the finalization of an impressive equipment list for all versions. Orders for the third Q-model in the series, which will have the distinction of being the first Audi SUV to offer the efficiency-focused option of a 54.3mpg front-wheel-drive variant, are set to begin in June. Deliveries will start in November.

Four engines will initially be available, all combining direct fuel injection with turbo charging and all backed up by start-stop and energy recuperation systems – the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol unit in 170PS and 211PS forms and the 2.0-litre TDI with 140PS and 177PS. The 2.0-litre TDI 140PS unit will power the front-wheel-drive model only at launch, deliveries of which will start in December, shortly after the rest of the range.

All other engines will be linked to quattro all-wheel-drive, but regardless of the configuration secure handling will be assured by the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program with electronic differential lock, which effectively regulates torque distribution by braking individual wheels when they start to slip.

New efficiency feature for S tronic
The 2.0 TDI 140PS and 2.0 TFSI 170PS engines will be linked to a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while the 2.0 TDI 177PS and 2.0 TFSI 211PS units will feature a new development of the acclaimed seven-speed S tronic transmission. If the optional Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system with its new efficiency mode is specified, the rapid-shifting twin-clutch transmission will now disengage its active clutch each time the driver lifts off the throttle, allowing the Q3 to use the momentum already built up to ‘coast’ without the need for engine input. When the efficiency mode is selected, the electronic climate control and cruise control systems also operate at the optimum level for minimal fuel consumption.

Inside the deceptively roomy Q3 there is seating for up to five adults, an accommodating load bay offering up to 1,365 litres of capacity thanks to split/folding rear seats, and an impressive level of standard equipment across the SE and S line specification levels.

Externally the SE option includes 17-inch alloy wheels, contrasting exterior trim, chrome window trims, aluminium roof rails and rear parking sensors, and inside dual-zone climate control, a Concert audio system with 6.5-inch manually retractable colour display screen, Bluetooth interface, Audi Music Interface iPod connection and light and rain sensors. The Q3 will also come equipped with navigation preparation, enabling customers to ‘activate’ navigation retrospectively by purchasing an SD card if required.

For a premium of £2,750 in each case, the new Audi Q3 can be upgraded to the S line specification, which includes 18-inch alloy wheels, S line exterior and interior styling enhancements, and xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and LED rear tail lights.

Options include ‘steerable beam’ adaptive light technology for the xenon plus headlights, a high-beam assistant to intelligently illuminate the road ahead, the hard drive-based navigation system plus with seven-inch colour screen and 3D mapping and the side assist blind spot warning and lane assist lane departure warning driver aids.

Among the more practical extras is a luggage compartment package, a front-passenger seat with a folding seat back, a reversible loadliner, a reversible mat, a load sill protector made of stainless steel, a load-through hatch in the rear seat backrest and a ski bag.

A new compact Audi SUV that will be as comfortable within the confines of the city as it will be scaling hills or crossing continents makes its world debut next week at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show (April 21-28). The Q3 wraps trademark Audi quality, 50-plus mpg efficiency and advanced technology in a rugged SUV body with dimensions that favour urban use, and underpins these with an agile chassis with increased ground clearance and the all-weather reassurance of quattro all-wheel-drive.

The most diminutive member of the Audi Q-series has been designed to be very much in tune with the times. As a new departure for an Audi SUV, the predominantly quattro-equipped range will also include a front-wheel-drive model that will give absolute priority to efficiency. This 2.0-litre TDI, 140PS version with manual transmission will weigh in at under 1,500kg – a remarkable figure by SUV standards – and will be capable of achieving in excess of 54mpg.

Numerous additional measures contribute to this exemplary efficiency, and apply right across the range. The streamlined body with its lightweight aluminium and high-tech steel content slips easily through the air thanks to an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.32, and low rolling resistance tyres, engine start-stop, energy recuperation and electromechanical power steering systems all feature as standard across the board. The optional Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system also features a fuel-saving efficiency mode, and when this option is specified the further developed S tronic twin clutch transmission can now disengage drive each time the throttle pedal is released to reduce draw on the engine.

Efficient four-cylinder engine range

Three engines will initially be available, all combining direct fuel injection with turbo charging – the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol unit in 170PS and 211PS forms and the 2.0-litre TDI with 177PS. The top ranking 2.0-litre TFSI unit powers the Q3 from rest to 62mph in 6.9 seconds and on to a 143mph top speed. Soon after launch the 140PS 2.0-litre TDI will be offered in the entry level front-drive Q3.

The 2.0 TDI 140PS and 2.0 TFSI 170PS engines will be linked to six-speed manual transmission as standard, while the 2.0 TDI 177PS and 2.0 TFSI 211PS units will feature the acclaimed seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission.

All versions will have the necessary grounding to make unruffled progress over a variety of terrains thanks to their raised 170mm ride height and robust multi-link front and rear suspension. This is bolstered by the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program with electronic differential lock, which effectively regulates torque distribution by braking individual wheels when they start to slip. The predominant configuration will of course be quattro all-wheel-drive, which via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch redistributes power at lightning speed from front to rear axles as needed, instilling exceptional grip and control in all weathers and on the most challenging of roads or the roughest of tracks.

The Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system will be available as an option to enable drivers to tailor the Q3’s driving characteristics even more precisely. The system incorporates comfort, auto, dynamic and efficiency modes which influence the responses of the throttle and steering, and also the optional adaptive light and cruise control systems where these are fitted.

Upgraded S tronic transmission

When the efficiency mode is selected, the electronic climate control and cruise control systems operate at the optimum level for minimal fuel consumption, and in models with S tronic transmission, the active clutch is disengaged each time the driver lifts off the throttle, allowing the Q3 to use the momentum already built up to ‘coast’ without the need for engine input.

The city-friendly size of the distinctive Q3 body encapsulates a deceptively roomy interior with seating for five and an accommodating load bay with a 460-litre capacity, rising to 1,365 litres if the standard split/folding rear seat is stowed. Celebrated Audi precision and attention to detail are as evident as ever in the high quality fittings and the attractive wrap-around dashboard with its clear, intuitive controls.

Two specification levels will be available for UK Q3 models – SE and S line. The SE option builds impressively strong foundations, with 17-inch alloy wheels, contrasting painted bumpers, chrome window trims, aluminium roof rails and rear parking sensors featuring externally, and dual-zone climate control, a Concert audio system with 6.5-inch manually retractable colour display screen, Bluetooth interface, Audi Music Interface iPod connection and light and rain sensors all present inside. The Q3 will also come equipped with navigation preparation, enabling customers to ‘activate’ navigation retrospectively by purchasing an SD card if required.

S line models will upgrade with 18-inch alloy wheels, S line exterior and interior styling enhancements and xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and LED rear tail lights

Numerous high-end options attest to the excellent technological standards of the Q3. They include adaptive light technology for the xenon plus headlights, a high-beam assistant to intelligently illuminate the road ahead, the hard drive-based navigation system plus with seven-inch colour screen and 3D mapping and the side assist blind spot warning and lane assist lane departure warning driver aids.

Among the more practical options is a luggage compartment package, a front-passenger seat with a folding seat back, a reversible loadliner, a reversible mat, a load sill protector made of stainless steel, a load-through hatch in the rear seat backrest and a ski bag.

At a later date, it will become possible to link the MMI navigation plus system with the online Bluetooth car phone, which integrates a UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Standard) module. This will enable the navigation system to make use of Google Earth images, and will enable the Q3 to double as a WLAN hotspot in which passengers can enjoy unrestricted internet connectivity on the road.

A new take on the Audi A3 is hatched this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, where for the first time in its history the ultra-successful premium compact car not only adopts a striking ‘notchback’ saloon body shell, but also uniquely combines it with a power output of over 400PS for epic performance. Known simply as the A3 concept, the fastest ever factory-produced A3 is the latest in a long line of one-off Audi design studies, and is characteristically laden with technological advances in everything from construction to infotainment.

Apart from the tautly contoured new body shell, the most immediately obvious highlight of the A3 concept is its five-cylinder Turbo FSI petrol engine, whose 408PS output outnumbers its closest series production relative, the potent RS 3 Sportback, by 68PS. Peak torque of 500Nm is also 50Nm up, and is available over a broad rev range between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm, making an explosive 4.1-second 0-62mph time a reality. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.

Fuel economy in this latest Audi study looks all the more impressive when these remarkable figures are taken into account, with up to 31mpg possible on the combined cycle, giving CO2 emissions of 212g/km. A regulated oil pump, the intelligent Audi thermo-management system and an energy recovery system – technologies from the brand’s modular efficiency platform – all contribute to this high efficiency. The rack-and-pinion steering also draws minimal power because its electromechanical drive system requires no energy when driving straight ahead.

A compact seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission also helps to optimize efficiency, while at the same time delivering the trademark lightning-quick gear changes that are especially appropriate here.

Weight-conscious design

At 4,440mm long, 1,840mm wide and just 1,390mm high, the A3 concept has a dynamic stance that suggests great agility. It can deliver on this promise thanks to the use of ultra-modern components, design methods and joining techniques. These include the use of custom-tailored blanks in the floor area, carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in varying proportions for the grille surround, front air intake, door mirror elements, rear apron and even the 20-inch alloy wheels, and aluminium for the bonnet, doors and tailgate.

These weight-saving elements help to pare the A3 concept back to a relatively light 1,540kg, meaning its RS 3 Sportback-derived McPherson strut front and four-link rear suspension is even less encumbered through the bends. Front and rear tracks that at 1,572mm and 1,542mm are even wider than the RS 3 Sportback’s also help to plant the study even more firmly, and of course quattro permanent all-wheel drive via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch acts as the mainstay.

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system appears for the first time in an A3, giving the driver five modes with which to fine-tune engine characteristics, power steering feel and gear shift points for the seven-speed S tronic transmission. As well as the more familiar comfort, auto, dynamic and individual settings, the latest iteration of the system features an efficiency mode designed for maximum economy.

To gain access to all this in the A3 concept, the driver need only touch the door handle with its brushed aluminium clasp. It then power extends outwards, opening the door to a futuristic cabin which, thanks to the best-in-class 2,630mm wheelbase, is also suitably spacious. This applies to the ‘boot’ as well, which offers an impressive 410-litre capacity.

Front sport seats with prominent side bolsters provide suitable anchorage for high- performance driving, and position occupants perfectly in relation to the dashboard with its aviation-inspired air vents and control knobs. The high-quality sound system features speakers in the doors and the rear shelf with aluminum trim panels, and when turned on, these extend a few millimetres to give a visual accompaniment to the system’s excellent sound.

Located behind the compact, flat-bottomed, three-spoke multifunction steering wheel are two analogue dial instruments with black dials and red needles, complemented by additional kidney-shaped displays. In between these is the large, eight-inch display for the driver information system. The display is user-programmable – the driver can select the content to be displayed from an extensive menu.

Luxury class appointments

The control panel for the MMI multimedia system is located on the centre tunnel console, and for the first time the surface of its large rotary pushbutton also incorporates the touch pad for the MMI touch system which allows the driver to ‘write’ navigation destinations and other commands using a fingertip. This new solution, which makes the already exemplary MMI operation even more intuitive, will soon be introduced in series production Audi models. The ultra-thin MMI monitor power-extends out of the dashboard, another feature taken from the full-size car class. Notable new departures at this level also include the electromechanical parking brake control and the stunning LED headlights.

In terms of infotainment, the Audi A3 concept further emphasizes why the brand is one of the leaders in this field. A UMTS model provides full access to the Internet, allowing the car to access services from Google, and thanks to the WLAN hotspot, passengers can surf and send e-mail using their own computers. Holders for iPads are installed on the back of the front seat backrests.

Audi has gone to even greater lengths to cocoon A8 passengers in absolute comfort in long wheelbase versions of the lightweight aluminium-bodied luxury saloon, the first examples of which have just reached the UK. Available from £60,010 OTR, the five-strong A8 L range incorporates an additional 130mm of wheelbase and body length to provide even more exceptional passenger accommodation. It is also further refined by a 6.3-litre, twelve cylinder W12 flagship model that is exclusive to the long wheelbase line-up.

Like the ‘standard wheelbase’ A8, the lengthened luxury saloon is crafted predominantly from aluminium in the interest of efficiency, comfort and driving agility. This approach reduces weight by around 40 per cent compared with an all-steel equivalent, and provides the very best operating conditions for the five engines that power the range – the 3.0-litre TDI (250PS), the 4.2-litre TDI (350PS), the supercharged 3.0-litre TFSI (290PS), the 4.2-litre FSI (372PS) and the heavily reworked W12. This remarkably refined twelve cylinder powerhouse has been bored out from 6.0-litres to 6.3-litres, and is now bolstered by FSI direct petrol injection for improved economy and emissions control. Maximum power has increased by 50PS over the previous version to 500PS, and the 45Nm higher torque peak of 625Nm arrives at 3,250 rpm.

As a result, the A8 L W12 can power to 62mph in just 4.7 seconds, and cruise serenely, where conditions allow, at a governed top speed of 155mph. And with the help of FSI technology, fuel economy belies these figures, with up to 22.8mpg achievable according to the combined cycle test – an improvement of around 9 per cent over the outgoing model which results in CO2 output of 290g/km.

Thanks to its advanced adaptive air springs, lightweight suspension and latest generation quattro all-wheel-drive, the long-wheelbase Audi A8 manages to combine the polished ride refinement expected of a luxury car with handling poise and agility that would normally characterize performance saloons from one or two classes below.

The full extra length of the A8 L benefits rear-seat passengers, who are able to enter even more easily through wider doors which, in the W12 version, feature power assisted closure. Rear passenger comfort is also further improved by standard seat heating, an upgraded climate control system which enables precise temperature modulation in the two rear ‘zones’ and electrically operated rear window and side window blinds. In the W12, comfort is taken to even greater extremes by replacing the standard rear seat arrangement with two individual sculpted rear seats which can be heated and feature fore/aft adjustable bases and angle adjustable backrests.

Online services

Well-being in the W12 is also further enhanced by double glazing and even more extensive use of Fine Nappa leather taking in everything from the glove compartment lid to the area surrounding the MMI controls. Technology plays a no less important role, as expected in a key exponent of Vorsprung durch Technik. All-LED headlights feature as standard in the W12, as do features including a BOSE audio system linked to a hard drive-based ‘jukebox’ capable of holding up to 8,000 songs, the MMI Touch fingertip navigation and telephone data entry system and a suite of sophisticated online services.

When a Bluetooth-capable mobile phone with SIM access profile is present, weather information and Google Earth images can be beamed via the car’s internal UMTS module to the Multi Media Interface (MMI) and its navigation unit. Through its wireless local area network (WLAN) link the car also doubles as a wi-fi hotspot, allowing passengers to connect up to six computers to the internet.

Four and a half months before the Le Mans 24 Hours, preparations for the endurance classic are in full swing at Audi. Two new Audi R18 cars and one Audi R15 TDI were used in tests at Sebring (U.S. state of Florida).

The programme planned for the tradition-steeped American circuit specified endurance runs for one of the completely re-developed LMP1 sports cars while the second Audi R18 was primarily used for development work. The Audi R15 “plus plus” that will be fielded at the 12-hour race at Sebring – the season opener of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) – completed a long run as well. In addition, the basic setup for the race in March was worked out on the vehicle.

During the tests, which ended on Saturday, the nine Audi “factory” drivers took turns at the wheel so that all of them had the opportunity to drive each of the three sports cars.

“We’re very pleased with the performance of the Audi R18 at our first outing at Sebring,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “We opted for this race track because it makes high demands on the mechanical systems of our vehicles. The temperatures are better than in Europe right now, plus the dry weather provides us with assurance that we’re able to conduct the endurance runs as planned. On a wet track the loads would be lower and the test results therefore less conclusive.”

Turbocharging and supercharging share top billing in the new Audi A1 1.4 TFSI S line 185PS, which is available to order in the UK from this week priced from £20,705 OTR. The new top-performing A1 derives its impressive performance from a potent combination of the two forced induction methods working sequentially, but nevertheless manages to maintain frugal 47.9mpg economy potential giving CO2 output of just 139g/km.

The compact and lightweight four-valve-per-cylinder ‘dual-charged’ engine powers the A1 1.4 TFSI 185PS from rest to 62mph in just 6.9 seconds, and on to a 141mph top speed. Under power, the supercharger is the first to exert its influence, intervening at around 1,500rpm to increase thrust. In most cases it then disengages at around 2,400rpm, to be followed from around 3,500rpm by a boost from the turbocharger to hasten progress yet again.

As the supercharger takes care of low-range boost, it has been possible to use a larger turbocharger designed with optimum efficiency in mind, and this is reflected in the impressively strong combined cycle fuel economy and low emissions.

The S tronic seven-speed twin-clutch transmission directs power to the front wheels as standard, and with its ability to perform gear shifts in just a few hundredths of a second perfectly suits the newcomer’s temperament. Its tall seventh gear also reduces fuel consumption.

ESP with limited slip differential
McPherson strut front and torsion-beam rear suspension with separate springs and dampers and taut S line settings forms the basis for agile handling, giving keen turn in and impressive mid-corner stability and grip. Control under pressure is also safeguarded by the latest ESP stabilization program with electronic axle differential lock, which initiates very brief braking of the inside front wheel when its sensors detect an impending loss of traction during fast cornering.

The performance-oriented S line suspension forms part of the overall S line specification that is standard for the 1.4 TFSI 185PS, and includes features such as an exclusive S line exterior treatment, 17-inch alloy wheels and part leather-upholstered sports seats. This is in addition to the Sport equipment level which already includes remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, Driver’s Information System and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display.

The new Audi A1 scooped the top honour at the prestigious What Car? Awards last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane.

The judges were full of admiration for the premium subcompact hatchback, which “comes across as every inch a bespoke premium product“ and “oozes quality everywhere you look and from everything you touch – you won’t find better at this price.“

Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of What Car?, explained: “The Audi A1 is a brilliant car: brilliantly targeted and brilliantly executed. More and more buyers are looking for smaller, more efficient cars, but with all the luxury trappings of much larger cars. That’s exactly what Audi has given them – a super-stylish, high quality small car that’s affordable and great fun, too.“

Peter Schwarzenbauer, Board Member for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG, accepted the award and said: “Our buyers can have great confidence in the A1 now that it has been voted the best by the respected What Car? experts who we know are exceptionally thorough in their testing. We know this is right up there among the very hardest awards to win from a car title anywhere in the world.“

The A1 is “top of the pile in so many ways“

The A1 has also clinched the Best Supermini title for 2011. Having been voted by What Car? readers as the Most Exciting Car of 2010 at last year’s awards, the A1 has fulfilled its promise in the eyes of the judges.

Jeremy Hicks, Director of Audi UK said: “It’s an incredible honour for the A1 to win three What Car? awards in its debut year. We were naturally thrilled when it won the Most Exciting Car of the Year award in 2010, but for it to win the Supermini category and then the Car of the Year award overall in 2011 is extraordinary.“

Prices for the A1 start at £13,420 OTR for the 1.2 TFSI (86PS) SE model, and rise to £18,665 for the 1.4 TFSI (122PS) S line model.
