For more than 25 years the BMW M5 Saloon has defined the high-performance saloon segment, in the process becoming the most successful car of its type in the world. Now a new fifth-generation model raises the concept of the premium executive saloon combining track-car dynamics and supreme touring comfort to an even higher level.

It features the most potent engine ever devised by BMW’s high-performance M division, here making its world premiere, along with race-bred chassis technology that includes, for the first time, an Active M differential and electronic damping control. The unique exterior design has been dictated by the technical requirements of the car, while the luxurious sports car-like cockpit offers an extensive range of innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services.

The new M5 Saloon will be available in the UK in November 2011, priced at £73,040 on-the-road.

Drivetrain The heart of any BMW M car is its engine, and never more so than with the new M5. For the first time an M5 features a turbocharged power unit – a high-revving 4.4-litre (4,395cc) V8, here making its world premiere. Developing 560hp from 5,750-7,000rpm, it is the most potent series-production engine ever to emerge from BMW’s high-performance M division. Incorporating the company’s M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold, it guarantees the legendary BMW M-car thrust with seamless lag-free delivery from little more than tickover speed thanks to 680Nm of torque from only 1,500rpm.

Compared with the previous V10-engined M5, maximum power is up by around 10 per cent and peak torque by more than 30 per cent. As a result, the latest M5 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds, and 0-124mph in only 13 seconds. The voluntarily limited top speed is 155mph.
The two banks of the V8 engine are arranged at 90 degrees, leaving space to accommodate the two turbochargers and catalytic converters in their midst. This ensures that the engine is not only extremely compact, but that the catalytic converters reach operating temperature more quickly to boost efficiency, while the short length of the unique intake and exhaust ducts minimises pressure losses. BMW’s patented cross-bank exhaust manifold optimises gas flow to the twin-scroll turbochargers, which have been specially developed for the M5 Saloon to deliver a maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar. The construction principle of the M TwinPower Turbo technology also helps give the M5 Saloon its distinctive V8 soundtrack.

Solenoid injectors positioned centrally between the valves, within immediate range of the spark plugs, deliver multiple sprays of fuel directly into the cylinders at a maximum pressure of 200 bar. The cooling effect of direct injection allows an extraordinarily high compression ratio of 10:1, a further aid to efficiency. VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control adjusts the lift of the intake valves to minimise throttle losses in the gas cycle, while Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft control helps the engine achieve its outstanding level of torque at low rpm.

Transmission
In any BMW, performance goes hand-in-hand with efficiency, and the new M5 Saloon is no exception. With BMW’s seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including engine Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration, the M5′s fuel consumption has been reduced by more than 30 per cent to 28.5mpg, while CO2 emissions tumble to 232g/km.

The transmission offers manual (S) and fully automated (D) shift options, with three programmes in each, allowing the driver to select the most sporty, relaxed or efficient driving style at will via a rocker switch. There is also a low speed assistance function to keep the car moving smoothly through heavy traffic with only a light touch on the accelerator. At the same time the engine characteristics can be switched from Efficient to Sport or Sport Plus through another button in the centre console.

Chassis
The driving dynamics of the new M5 Saloon are grouped under an umbrella which BMW calls Hallmark M. They include a further advancement of the specially developed differential that allows M drivers to enjoy the benefits of high-powered rear-wheel-drive cars with maximum safety. Called Active M, it is an electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip differential that intervenes rapidly and precisely at an early stage to control wheelspin and keep the car stable. Its control unit is connected via FlexRay high-speed data transfer to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to calculate the locking force needed – anywhere between 0 per cent and 100 per cent. It also takes into account the position of the accelerator, the rotational speed of the wheels and the car’s yaw rate.

As a result, the BMW M5 Saloon driver not only has the safety net of a sophisticated and responsive traction control system in slippery conditions and tightening corners, but is also able to enjoy to the full the agility which is an essential part of the make-up of all M cars.

The DSC system is linked to the anti-lock brakes (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assistant, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying function and Start-off Assistant. By pressing the DSC button the driver can override the basic settings and select M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which raises the intervention thresholds or turns them off completely.

The new M5′s Saloon agility owes as much to its perfect front-to-rear weight balance and excellent power-to-weight ratio (3.3kg per bhp) as it does to the chassis dynamics which, like the engine, have benefited from BMW’s participation in top-level motorsport.

The M5 Saloon has bespoke M-specific suspension with specially developed axle kinematics honed not only on the race track but also through extensive testing at the Nürburgring. As a result, the chassis components are both light and strong. The new M5 comes as standard with electronically controlled dampers that allow drivers to select from three settings – Comfort for normal road use, Sport when a more dynamic driving style is preferred and Sport Plus for the most extreme driving, such as on a race track.

The driver can also choose between three settings for the M-tuned Servotronic power assisted steering. Comfort requires only a small amount of steering effort when manoeuvring or parking, but still allows the instant changes of direction expected of an M car at higher speeds. Sport delivers more intensive feedback, while Sport Plus requires greater force on the wheel so that the driver gets precisely the response that is intended from every steering input.

The new M5 has six-piston caliper brakes featuring a further development of BMW’s remarkable compound construction so that they resist fade even under repeated heavy loads and deliver an exceptional degree of feel. They are mounted within 19-inch M light alloy wheels with 265/40 R19 tyres at the front and 295/35 R19 tyres at the rear. Forged 20-inch alloys can be specified as an option.

Design The dynamic appearance and authoritative stance of the regular 5 Series saloon have been lifted by M-specific design features at the front, rear and sides. These have been almost entirely dictated by the technical demands of an ultra-high-performance car.

The wide-spread M black slats in the grille and the three air intakes in the low front apron are there to satisfy the cooling requirements of the twin-turbo V8 engine, for example, while the air channelling flaps at the lower edge of the front end were developed on the race track and are designed to optimise the aerodynamics of the car.

The contours of the bonnet converge into a V shape to meet the customary BMW double-kidney grille, which sits above a forward projecting central aperture between two curving side intakes which collectively emphasise the width of the new M5 Saloon. Standard bi-xenon front light clusters contain visually unique LED light rings and indicator lights which consist of 10 LED units. LED accent lights cut across the top of the familiar BMW twin round headlamps.

A long wheelbase, set-back passenger compartment and high-gloss black side window surround accentuate the stretched profile of the new M5 Saloon. Flared wheel arches, flush 19- or 20-inch wheels and lowered M suspension ensure the car’s sporting characteristics do not go unmistaken. The wheels give a clear view of the six-piston fixed calipers of the high-performance braking system.

The front side sections have a fresh interpretation of the hallmark M gills within a chrome frame adorned with the BMW M logo, while the mirror casings – in body colour with high-gloss black lower edges and bases – are aerodynamically shaped, emphasised by their horizontal crease line. The side skirts feature a powerful bulge and a rising crease which draws attention to the driven wheels and re-emphasises that this is the performance flagship of the 5 Series range.

At the rear, horizontal lines give the M5 a wide, sporty stance, and a diffuser is incorporated in the lower edge of the apron to allow sufficient airflow through the underfloor section. A signature feature of the new M5 is the twin-tailpipe exhaust system, positioned wide on either side of the diffuser.

A subtle Gurney flap on the rear edge of the boot lid provides additional downforce at high speed. L-shaped rear light units contain LED strips, indicators and brake lamps and are clearly identifiable at night as belonging to a BMW.

Interior design
The interior of the M5 fuses the intimacy of a sports-car cockpit, the spaciousness of a prestige saloon and the luxury of a premium car. It features bespoke M Sports seats, Merino leather upholstery, Aluminium Trace interior trim strips and the BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite, plus the BMW iDrive control system with a 10.2-inch Control Display. M5 lettering on the sill panels is standard.

The instrument cluster with black-panel technology includes classic BMW M circular dials with red needles and white illumination. The multifunction buttons on the M leather steering wheel operate the cruise control, radio and telephone. On the left-hand side the driver will now find two M Drive buttons which can call up a pre-configured setting for the car – for example, a sports or a more comfort-orientated set of driving characteristics.

The driver can adjust no fewer than six parameters: engine management, the Servotronic power steering, the M DCT Drivelogic gearshift programme, DSC mode, the electronically variable Dynamic Damper Control and the information relayed in the standard driver Head-up Display. These can be re-configured at any time via the iDrive menu.

Standard and optional equipment
The new BMW M5 offers an extensive range of standard and optional innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services in a sports car-like cockpit that meets every requirement of a premium high-performance saloon.

Standard equipment in the UK includes Head-up Display, DAB digital radio, front and rear Park Distance Control, four-zone air-conditioning, Xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights and front seat heating. With Professional Multimedia Navigation system and BMW Assist, a new real-time traffic information service provides accurate traffic bulletins and diversion suggestions. Furthermore, with Bluetooth and USB audio interface as standard, the integration of Smartphones and music players keep occupants entertained and informed.

Optional equipment including a rear-view camera, High-Beam Assistant, Speed Limit information, Lane Change and Lane Departure warnings, Surround View and BMW Night Vision ensure the driver is aware of anything and everything happening within the vicinity of the car. A Mobile Application preparation allows iPhone owners to receive web radio stations and display Facebook and Twitter posts on the Control Display.

BMW i – introduction

BMW i is about the development of visionary vehicles and mobility services, inspiring design and a new understanding of premium that is strongly defined by sustainability. With BMW i the BMW Group is adopting an all-embracing approach, redefining the understanding of personal mobility with purpose-built vehicle concepts, a focus on sustainability throughout the value chain and a range of complementary mobility services.

Two special vehicle concepts.
The BMW i brand is now poised to enter the consciousness of the automotive public with two new vehicles. On the one hand there is the BMW i3 Concept. Previously known as the Megacity Vehicle, the BMW Group’s first series-produced all-electric car focuses squarely on the mobility challenges in urban areas and, as the first premium electric vehicle, reinvents the hallmark BMW attributes for the future. Then comes the BMW i8 Concept, a sports car of the most contemporary variety – forward-looking, intelligent and innovative. Its unique plug-in hybrid solution brings together a combustion engine and an electric drive system to create an extraordinary driving experience complemented by extremely low fuel consumption and emissions.

BMW i3 Concept – dynamic, urban, emission-free.
The BMW i3 Concept is an uncompromisingly sustainable vehicle designed for urban areas. Driven purely by electric power and purpose-built to meet the demands of sustainable and emission-free mobility, it embodies an intelligent form of urban transportation and commuting.

The BMW i3 is a well-resolved all-round concept, with every detail conceived and optimised to fulfil its eventual purpose. Its innovative LifeDrive architecture renders the BMW i3 Concept light, safe, spacious and dynamic. Innovative use of materials and intelligent lightweight design, moreover, not only enable the i3 Concept to travel long distances on a single charge and provide superb safety in the event of a collision, they also help give the car its excellent driving dynamics. The electric motor over the rear axle – which generates output of 125 kW/170 hp and impressive torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) from a standstill – and a small turning circle combine to deliver pleasingly crisp driving characteristics. The BMW i3 Concept accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h (37 mph) in under four seconds and from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than eight seconds.

The so-called Life module conjures up a feeling of space inside the car more generous than even the latest conversion vehicles can offer. Select materials lend the open and airy cabin a lounge-like character. The use of renewable raw materials is another defining characteristic of the interior, offering passengers a further means of “experiencing” the sustainability of the vehicle. Parts of the instrument panel and door panelling are visibly made from natural fibres, while the naturally tanned leather of the seats creates a lounge-style ambience. With four seats, wide-opening opposing “coach” doors, a boot capacity of around 200 litres and an additional functional compartment in the front, the BMW i3 Concept is neatly equipped for the demands of everyday use.

Innovative connectivity functions create a seamless connection between the BMW i3 Concept and its customers’ lives outside the car. Remote functions accessible via a smartphone enable owners to find their vehicles, flag up nearby charging stations, allow battery charging and preconditioning at the touch of a button, and supply information on the current status of the vehicle. Meanwhile, intelligent assistance systems ease the stress on drivers in monotonous city driving situations and allow them to arrive at their destination more safely and in a more relaxed state of mind.

BMW i8 Concept – emotional, dynamic and efficient.
The BMW i8 Concept and the fascinating approach that underpins it embody the vision of a sustainable contemporary sports car brought to life. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.

Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of under three litres per 100 kilometres (approx. 94 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Thanks to its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Added to which, the 2+2-seater offers enough space for four people, giving it a high level of everyday practicality.

The LifeDrive architecture of the BMW i8 Concept has been carefully adapted to enhance the vehicle’s sports car character, and therefore to deliver unbeatable performance and excellent driving dynamics. The motor in the front axle module and combustion engine at the rear are connected by an “energy tunnel”, which houses the high-voltage battery. This gives the car a low centre of gravity – and the dynamic benefits that come with it. The positioning of the electric motor and engine over their respective axles and the space-saving and well-balanced packaging of all components result in an optimum 50/50 weight distribution.

The emotional design of the BMW i8 Concept ensures its qualities are clear for all to see. Its dynamic proportions give the BMW i8 Concept the appearance of surging forward before it even turns a wheel and lend visual form to its extraordinary performance.

The sporting character continues into the interior. Boasting a driver-focused environment unmatched by any BMW Group vehicle before it, the BMW i8 Concept immerses the driver fully in the unique driving experience. The BMW i8 Concept is the sports car for a new generation – pure, emotional and sustainable.

BMW today reveals first pictures and details of the new 3 Series, the sixth generation of the world’s best-selling premium saloon. The 3 Series Saloon is the heart of the BMW brand, responsible for one-fifth of the company’s global sales. When the latest incarnation of 3 Series goes on sale next February it will build on the current model’s position as the ultimate drivers’ car in its sector. But it will also be the most logical business proposition, thanks to new powertrains and additional EfficientDynamics fuel-saving, emissions-reducing technologies.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon is a car of contradictions: larger and more spacious than the model it replaces, but lighter; quicker in many cases, but more fuel-efficient; and more nimble and agile while even safer. There have been big steps forward in style, quality, comfort and specification for only a minimal price increase. A wider choice of trim levels and an extensive personalisation programme will allow 3 Series Saloon buyers to order virtually a bespoke car.

*Electronically limited.

Compact BMW saloons have always appealed to the emotions of keen drivers because of their outstanding driving dynamics, but with the advent of the company’s EfficientDynamics technologies to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the middle of the last decade, they also present a compelling business case. That advantage is set to increase with the introduction of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon. By March 2012, when additional engines have been added to the four at launch, BMW will have eight versions of the new 3 Series Saloon with CO2 emissions at or below 120g/km while competitors can muster only one each. This brings clear benefits to owners in terms of Benefit-in-Kind company car taxation and Vehicle Excise Duty, while the 320d EfficientDynamics model, with CO2 emissions of less than 110g/km, allows businesses which outright purchase, to write off 100 per cent of the cost of the car against tax in the first year.

All versions of the new 3 Series Saloon feature Drive Performance Control as standard – a switch which allows the driver to swap between up to four driving modes, varying from sporty to extremely economical. The four modes are ECO PRO, Comfort, Sport, and Sport + (Sport + is included only on Sport models or with selected optional equipment). In ECO PRO, the throttle mapping changes so that a firmer push of the accelerator pedal is needed to extract the power that is delivered with a lighter touch in the other three modes, thus encouraging a more economical driving style. ECO PRO also alters the manual gearshift points advised by the Optimum Shift Indicator, modifies the gearshift strategy on models with automatic transmission and even adjusts the power consumption of features such as the climate control and heated mirrors and seats.

The EfficientDynamics technologies which gave the previous BMW 3 Series Saloon such a competitive advantage remain very much in place, and have been supplemented with new ones. Auto Stop-Start is fitted to all versions, manual and automatic, along with Brake Energy Regeneration, on-demand control of engine ancillary components and tyres with less rolling resistance. Weight has been reduced by up to 50kg compared with the previous model, while the drag coefficient (Cd) is down to as low as 0.26 thanks to optimised aerodynamics. The new 3 Series Saloon features a streamlined underside, covers which create a diffuser effect at the rear and Aero Curtain air channels in the front apron which reduce the turbulence created by the revolution of the front wheels in their arches.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon is fitted with electromechanical power steering which consumes no energy when the car is being driven in a straight line or in steady-state cornering. This has been achieved with no loss of the steering accuracy or precise feedback that is such an essential part of the BMW ‘ultimate driving machine’ ethos. Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance is standard on the 328i and 335i derivatives and optional on all others.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox, giving a wider spread of ratios than the former six-speed unit without taking up any more space in the engine bay, is available as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual. It is also now offered with every engine to significantly improve efficiency. For example, the new 318d automatic model now emits 22g/km less than the previous 318d automatic model. Automatic versions of the new 3 Series Saloon are also now as fuel-efficient, or more so, than their manual equivalents.

The clear drivers’ choice
With its rear-wheel-drive layout, near-perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, agile chassis set-up and responsive engines, the BMW 3 Series has always been the benchmark for driving enjoyment among compact premium saloons. That position has been strengthened in the new model.

All engines in the new 3 Series Saloon feature BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. They include a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol unit, developing 245hp and 350Nm of torque, in the 328i. It replaces the six-cylinder 3.0-litre engines in the previous 325i and 330i, with inherent advantages for weight and fuel consumption, yet with a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds in manual form, it is quicker than either. Efficiency is also significantly improved and both manual and automatic versions of the 328i have fuel economy of more than 44mpg and CO2 emissions below 150g/km. The new unit features High-Precision Direct Injection, BMW’s new TwinScroll turbocharging, Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve opening technology.

The 328i is one of four engines that will be available at launch, three of which are familiar from the outgoing model. The other petrol engine on offer is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo unit in the 335i. Demand for diesels will be catered for by an improved 2.0-litre 184hp 320d and the acclaimed 163hp 320d EfficientDynamics, which features longer gear ratios, reduced friction components and revised electronics to generate an outstanding 68.9mpg fuel consumption and just 109g/km CO2. Previously only available as a manual, the 320d EfficientDynamics is also now available with the new eight-speed automatic transmission – whilst retaining the same 109g/km emissions level.

Less than a month after launch, three new engines will be added. There will be 316d and 318d diesels, powered respectively by 116hp and 143hp variants of the 2.0-litre diesel engine, plus another version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This will slot into the new 320i, and will be tuned to deliver 184hp and 270Nm of torque, with the same free-revving, supremely flexible character of all other BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engines.

Bigger and better by design
The new BMW 3 Series Saloon features a stiffer body and an all-new chassis based on a longer wheelbase (now 2,810mm, an increase of 50mm on the previous model) and wider tracks (by 37mm at the front and 47mm at the rear). Increased in overall length by 93mm, it has the characteristic BMW design proportions of short overhangs for maximum agility. All-independent suspension is by aluminium torque struts, wishbones and swivel joints at the front and an improved and refined version of the proven five-link arrangement from the previous 3 Series Saloon at the rear. BMW engineers have managed to improve upon the already outstanding handling qualities of the outgoing car so that it delivers even greater agility and directional stability with noticeably improved comfort. State-of-the-art electronic control systems ensure the new car’s dynamics can be enjoyed with complete peace of mind.

Light-alloy wheels of at least 17 inches in diameter and shod with Run-flat tyres linked to a Tyre Puncture Warning System are now fitted to every version apart from the 320d EfficientDynamics, which has 16-inch aerodynamic alloys and non-Run-flat tyres. The rolling resistance of the tyres has been reduced by 15 per cent compared with those on the previous model, with no loss of dynamic performance.

Optional Variable Sport steering and Adaptive M Sport suspension with electronically variable dampers will also be available – both interacting seamlessly with the Drive Performance Control and adding the ‘Sport+’ mode to this switch.

The bespoke compact executive car
BMW 3 Series Saloon buyers are extremely diverse in their preferences and tastes, with a growing demand for greater personalisation, and the new model range has been configured to reflect that. It offers more trim levels than ever before – six – and a wide range of packages and individual options which customers can add to the already significantly increased standard specification of every model.

Common to all versions is a new-found sense of style, higher interior quality standards and much improved packaging. The new 3 Series Saloon is simultaneously more sporty and more elegant than its predecessor. Improved proportions, pronounced wheel arches, headlamp units which blend into the double-kidney grille to form a continuous band across the front of the car and air inlets beneath the headlights visually stretch the width and make the new 3 Series Saloon look low, wide and sporty. This is echoed by the strong horizontal design language at the rear and the forward-pressing nose, long bonnet, rising swage lines and large wheels visible from the side. At the same time, the coupé-like profile, distinctive double round headlights, L-shaped rear light units with LED light bars and the decorative trims chosen for the grille and around the windows give an athletic and yet elegant appearance.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon is 93mm longer than the previous model and 6mm narrower, excluding door mirrors. It also has a 50mm longer wheelbase. This has clear advantages when it comes to internal space. There is 18mm more feet entry freedom, 15mm more knee room and 8mm more headroom in the rear, while the height of the rear door and its opening angle have both been increased to make entry and exit easier. None of this is at the expense of luggage space, which has increased by 20 litres to 480 litres.

Befitting the BMW 3 Series’ renowned driving dynamics, the interior control and switchgear layout is totally driver-focused. The elegant and dynamic new interior design language, with twisting and merging surfaces arranged in a series of layers, all angle towards the driver. The centre console itself is angled at seven degrees towards the driver.

So that the passenger does not feel excluded, the iDrive controller used to access many of the car’s functions and the 6.5” display monitor which accompanies it (both standard on all models) are arranged centrally, within equal reach and view of both front occupants. What is immediately apparent to all who enter the new BMW 3 Series Saloon is the significant improvement in trim quality and ambience. This is emphasised not only by the appearance and feel of the interior surfaces, but also by the choice of colours and materials to reflect the different trim levels.

Popular ‘Lines’ specification, similar to BMW 1 Series, introduced
BMW in the UK will again offer the highly valued ES, SE and, in 2012, M Sport versions of the 3 Series Saloon, but there will also be Sport, Modern and Luxury models, each with a distinct character and increased opportunities for individualisation. Even the trim on the key fobs differs between the various versions. This increase in specification offer mirrors the popular ‘Lines’ range first showcased on the BMW 1 Series launched earlier this year.

All of the new models will appeal to both retail and corporate customers. The popular ES and SE will be again available from launch, whilst Sport and M Sport are targeted at the more enthusiastic driver and Modern and Luxury are different takes on the exclusive and sophisticated compact premium saloon.

By offering this enhanced range of trims, BMW is able to meet the needs of its increasingly diverse customer base which is demanding an increasing level of individualisation from their vehicle. With a broader choice of trims, 3 Series Saloon customers can better tailor their vehicle to reflect their personalities, attitudes, tastes and lifestyles.

In addition to the enhanced range of trims, all models including ES (which is only available on 316d), will receive significantly enhanced levels of standard equipment, including 17-inch light alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning, Bluetooth, BMW Professional radio with 6.5-inch colour screen and iDrive, keyless starting, USB, a multi-function leather steering wheel, cruise control and automatic boot opening.

SE is available with all engines except the 335i, and adds, among other things, different alloy wheels, rear Park Distance Control, two-zone air conditioning and a rain sensor with automatic light activation, for a premium of £850. Sport and Modern versions are priced £1,000 above the equivalent SE, while the difference between SE and Luxury is £2,500.

Sport models build on the purposeful and athletic styling of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and reflect its renowned agility and dynamic handling, through the use of both exterior and interior design cues. Sport has unique light alloy wheels, black high-gloss air intakes in redesigned bumpers and matching bars in the double-kidney grille, and a black chrome tailpipe finisher. Red stitching adorns the sport seats and leather-rimmed sports steering wheel. The interior is in high-gloss black with a red finisher, the instrument cluster has red highlighting and there is extended and switchable interior lighting with exclusive colours, chrome rings around the climate and radio controls and ‘Sport’ insignia on the door entry sills. Sport also comes with an additional ‘Sport+’ mode on the Drive Performance Control and is available on all four-cylinder models except the 328i and 320d EfficientDynamics.

Modern models provide a natural, harmonic balance of colours and textures, whilst retaining a refined and elegant character. As well as existing BMW customers, this is expected to appeal to those who have not previously considered the BMW brand. Modern is available on all engines except the 316d and 320d EfficientDynamics and replaces the high-gloss black exterior embellishments of Sport with matt chrome and has its own exclusive 17-inch light alloy wheel and bumper design. It also has switchable interior lighting colours, the extended lighting package and matt chrome trim detailing and signature door sills. The standard seats are in part cloth and part leather, whilst there is a two-tone Oyster finish on the dash, with Dark Oyster on the instrument panel and multi-function leather steering wheel.

As befits the name, Luxury models have a refined, sophisticated appearance, offer the finest quality materials and include an enhanced level of standard equipment. Luxury is available across the range apart from the 316d and 320d EfficientDynamics. Bright chrome replaces the high-gloss black of Sport models or the matt chrome of Modern, and there are exclusive 18-inch light alloy wheels as standard. Inside, the detailing is also chrome, while the upholstery is Dakota leather with an exclusive stitching pattern and the dash and door cappings are in Anthracite wood with a Pearl Chrome finisher.

M Sport will have lowered and stiffened sports suspension, unique aerodynamic body styling and ride on 18-inch M light alloy wheels. The interior will be trimmed in Aluminium Hexagon with a Blue finisher. The sport seats will be covered with Dakota leather, and the door finishers, steering wheel and shortened gearshift will reflect the car’s position as the sportiest 3 Series Saloon model. Prices will be announced nearer the 2012 on-sale date.

The six trim variants are just the starting point for a vast range of personalisation and individualisation possibilities for the new 3 Series Saloon. Many of the items on offer are new to the vehicle and include Park Assist, which allows the car to parallel park itself, with the driver controlling the accelerator and brake. A Reversing Assist camera and Surround-view cameras, which even let the driver see the car from above and the sides can also be chosen. Practicality can also be increased with a new 40:20:40 split-folding rear-seat option.

New safety options include a full-colour Head-Up Display which shows current speed limits, the car’s current speed and turn-by-turn instructions when a BMW navigation system is fitted. Dynamic Safety is another feature offered which tensions the seat belts and closes any open windows or the sunroof (if fitted and open) if an accident seems imminent. Internet access via the owner’s mobile telephone and BMW’s new Real Time Traffic Information service, which delivers faster, more accurate warnings of traffic hold-ups and even offers suggestions on how to avoid them, are among the media services available as part of BMW ConnectedDrive. Many of these features will be packaged to offer new 3 Series Saloon buyers related and desirable options at value prices.

The new 3 Series Saloon will appear in public for the first time at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2012. It is scheduled to go on sale in the UK a month later, on 11 February 2012.

Prices for the new vehicle start at £24,880 OTR for a 316d ES, with the increases over the previous model remaining low. The 320i increases by only £75 for example, whilst the 320d sees an increase of only £180. The 328i is £530 more expensive than the less powerful 325i in the previous range, but £2,935 cheaper than the 330i which it dramatically out-performs. In all cases since the standard specification of the car has been significantly enhanced compared to the previous model, the price rises are negated in real terms.

The road ahead for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon
BMW UK can confirm that towards the end of 2012 it will introduce four-wheel-drive and hybrid powertrains to the 3 Series Saloon for the first time in the UK. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system has been available on the 3 Series in some markets previously, and has now been engineered for right-hand-drive cars. It will be of particular benefit to owners who live in areas prone to extremes of bad weather, and will be available with selected petrol and diesel engines.

The ActiveHybrid 3 will arrive at roughly the same time, and will use the powertrain recently announced for the ActiveHybrid 5. This pairs the 335i’s 306hp six-cylinder engine with an up to 40kW electric motor in a particularly intelligent and efficient way.

Now in its third generation, the new BMW 6 Series Coupé takes the luxury 2+2 concept a step further by matching enhanced comfort and elegant design with sporting performance on a even higher level. The BMW 6 Series Coupé features a sweeping coupé roofline while the long bonnet, short over-hangs, set-back passenger compartment with Hofmeister kink, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the typical proportions of a BMW coupé more than any other model.

Two exceptional BMW turbocharged petrol engines and a twin turbocharged diesel powerplant, a newly developed chassis and a host of class-leading driver assistance technology ensure that the new BMW 6 Series Coupé is full of substance, while interior space and comfort have been enhanced.

Design

The new BMW 6 Series Coupé features a long sweeping bonnet, setback passenger compartment and flowing roof-line. Its now traditional BMW “shark nose”, with a large, forward-slanted BMW kidney grille, broad air intakes, wide, contoured bonnet and muscular wheel arches, allude to the powerful engine beneath. Inspired by the movement of water, the fluid lines of the car combine with the subtly curved surfaces to create a look of athletic elegance, which together with the 74mm increase in length and 5mm lower height creates a powerful stance.

Character lines stretching the full length of the body define the side view of the BMW 6 Series Coupé. The long, flat bonnet elongates the silhouette while the roof sweeps down in one fluid line, combining with the main body effortlessly, in an elegant coupé fashion, while the frameless doors and chrome side window border emphasise the tight lines of the typically BMW Hofmeister kink.

From the rear, bulging wheel arches and horizontal lines highlight the wide track of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé, alluding to its sporting performance and impressive road holding. Two-part rear light clusters give the typical BMW L-shape lights a particularly sporty, dynamic edge. Inside the units, two LED-powered light strips create a striking nighttime look. The rear indicators and brake lights also use LED units.

Longer, lower and wider, the new car is larger in every dimension than its predecessor except height, where it now stands half a centimetre closer to the ground. At 4,894mm in length, the new model is 74mm longer than its predecessor, while the wheelbase has stretched similarly, to 2,855mm. The car has also grown by 39mm in width, and now measures 1,894mm across, while 5mm have been shaved off its height.

As standard the new BMW 6 Series Coupé is equipped with xenon headlights that have BMW’s familiar double corona look while high-quality chrome elements, such as the fog lamps consisting of a string of three LED units, on the outer edges of the front apron accentuate the width of the car.

Optional Adaptive LED Headlights are available for the first time and provide a bright white light, similar to natural daylight, with low beam and high beam LED light rings. Horizontal LED ribs are positioned in the centre of the light rings ensuring BMW’s hallmark twin round headlight look is expressed in a strikingly fresh way. More than just style over substance, the Adaptive LED lights automatically pivot and adjust to the line of the corner depending on the car’s speed, steering angle and yaw rate to provide the best visibility possible for the driver.

The interior: made to measure luxury for four

Despite its lower height, the new 2+2 BMW 6 Series Coupé offers greater headroom in both the front and the rear, and height adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats now cover a greater range too. The individual rear sets also provide passengers with additional shoulder and elbow room, making for more comfortable cruising.

The front passenger area is bordered by a surface curving elegantly from the armrest over the side edge of the centre console, upwards and outwards into the instrument panel and then horizontally into the door trim, surrounding the front passenger area with a feeling of exclusive security.

In tune with the rest of the car’s optimised performance and greater comfort, the new BMW 6 Series Coupé is fitted with newly developed lightweight seats with an integrated seatbelt system and Easy Entry function to the rear passenger compartment: a brief tap of a switch automatically moves the seat as far forward as possible. Sports seats and Comfort seats can be fitted as an option too. The boot can accommodate 460 litres of luggage, equivalent to three 46inch golf bags or two medium hard-shell cases and a flight case. To utilise the rear space further the rear seats can be specified with a through-loading ski hatch, allowing two pairs of skis to be transported with ease.

Drivetrain

The new BMW 6 Series Coupé is available with two petrol engines and one diesel engine: the 650i, 640i and 640d respectively.

The world’s sportiest diesel engine is a 3.0litre twin-turbocharged in-line six-cylinder unit producing 313hp at 4,400rpm and 630Nm of torque from only 1,500rpm with the help of variable geometry turbo-charging. The BMW 640d Coupé is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph in 5.5seconds before topping out at an electronicallylimited top speed of 155mph.

It achieves this performance courtesy of sequential turbochargers, one smaller than the other, that provide a near continuous wave of torque from low revs. A complex arrangement of waste gates in the exhaust ensure the smooth transition from one turbo to another as the revs increase. The BMW 640d Coupé is fitted as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Auto Start-Stop and active air flaps behind the kidney grille. Such engineering expertise is the reason why the model offers rapid performance but can still achieve 51.4mpg on the combined cycle and record CO2 emissions of 145g/km.

The 4.4litre eightcylinder engine in the new BMW 650i Coupé is unique in that the brace of turbochargers are positioned in the Vshaped area between the cylinder banks. This design results in more efficient packaging and greater engine efficiency. A maximum 407hp is developed between 5,500 and 6,400rpm, with peak torque of 600Nm available between 1,750 and 4,500rpm.

The new BMW 650i Coupé sprints from zero to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 155mph. For a model of such blistering performance and refinement, it is also extraordinarily efficient, with average combined fuel consumption of 26.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 246g/km.

The six-cylinder inline engine in the new BMW 640i Coupé uses single turbocharger technology alongside petrol direct injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. This enables the 3.0litre unit to develop a maximum 320hp at 5,800rpm and maximum torque of 450Nm between 1,300 and 4,500rpm. This engine propels the BMW 640i Coupé from zero to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Perhaps even more remarkable are its efficiency figures. The BMW 640i Coupé achieves 36.2mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are only 181g/km, proving that at BMW luxurious sporting performance does not come at the expense of economy. Indeed, this model, like the 640d, is fitted as standard with an automatic transmission that features Auto Start-Stop technology and an automatic active air flap control behind the car’s kidney grille for optimum engine performance.

EfficientDynamics

Fuel saving technology called ECO PRO mode is offered on the 6 Series. By a touch of the Drive Dynamic Control button ECO PRO mode tweaks the engine management system, accelerator mapping and gearshift characteristics to favour a relaxed, lowrevving driving style. At the same time, power usage for electronically operated functions such as climate control is regulated to ensure maximum efficiency. A display on the instrument cluster keeps the driver informed of the levels of energy efficiency being achieved to encourage an economical driving style.

As with all BMWs, the new 6 Series Coupé comes with a raft of BMW Efficient-Dynamics measures to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In addition to the features highlighted on the 640i Coupé and 640d Coupé, all models have technology such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering (EPS), the needbased operation of ancillary components and intelligent lightweight construction to ensure maximum efficiency as standard.

Transmission

An eight-speed Sport automatic gearbox is standard fitment on all three models, and its wide range of ratios offer a perfect balance of muscular, sprinting performance, refined high speed cruising and low speed efficiency.

Chassis

The newly developed chassis of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé comes as standard with Drive Dynamic Control, which allows drivers to choose how responsive they want the gearbox, steering and throttle to be, while the Adaptive Drive system is available as an option with electrically controlled dampers and antiroll stabilisation.

Both the double wishbone front axle and the integral rear axle are made predominantly from aluminium. The chassis setup is geared to the requirements of drivers looking for a sporting character, although the dampers also respond sensitively to bumps in the road surface under high lateral acceleration.

In addition to the standard electromechanical power steering, another unique feature in this segment is the optional Integral Active Steering system. This system combines Active Steering for the front axle with a steering rear axle, allowing the steering angle and power assistance to be controlled at both the front and the rear with the help of electric motors. This precisely harmonised system offers extraordinary agility in dynamic driving situations, while allowing for an impressively deft touch around twisty mountain passes and in city traffic.

BMW Motorrad has officially announced the addition of the R 1200 GS Adventure Triple Black to its range of award-winning motorcycles.

This special edition GS combines the distinctive, rugged looks of the R 1200 GS Adventure with the subtle, classic Triple Black styling. Three distinctive, understated colours – sapphire black, granite grey and asphalt grey – transform the appearance of the Telelever forks, DOHC Boxer engine, rear frame, Paralever swingarm and iconic opposed cylinder head covers.

The BMW R 1200 GS is the best-selling adventure-sports motorcycle in the UK this year, with the Adventure version close behind in second. The two combined outsell every other motorcycle in the country above 125cc.

The first in the range of Triple Black motorcycles, the R 1200 GS, was launched in 2010 and has proved to be very popular. The Adventure Triple Black offers the same dark colours, but also features a huge 33-litre fuel tank, a taller touring screen, spoked wheels, longer travel suspension (ideal for on and off-road expeditions) and rugged engine protection bars.

Tony Jakeman, BMW Motorrad Marketing Manager, said: “The first Triple Black motorcycle, the R 1200 GS, is a huge success. The combination of the iconic GS looks with the black paintwork was such a hit with customers that it was only a matter of time before the Adventure Triple Black was created.
“While the R 1200 GS is a consummate all-rounder, the Adventure is a true continent-crossing motorcycle. And with the addition of a special edition Triple Black version, the unstoppable success story of the R 1200 GS continues.“

The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Triple Black is now available from BMW Motorrad Dealerships for £11,730 OTR.

The BMW 730Ld Saloon has been crowned Car of the Year at the Professional Driver Car of the Year Awards 2011, while also taking the title of Chauffer Car of the Year. Not to be outdone, the BMW 530d Gran Turismo retained its title of Executive Car of the Year for the second year in a row.

The BMW 7 Series was commended for its unrivalled mix of passenger luxury, low running cost and driver satisfaction making it the ideal chauffer car both for the driver and the driven. Its exceptional quality and improved fuel consumption, along with an excellent manufacturer-backed chauffer programme clinched the title.

The 5 Series Gran Turismo was praised for its abundance of rear leg room, command driving position, its sheer versatility and high quality. Its unique interior packaging matched with the choice of powerful yet economic drivetrains and an outstanding satellite navigation system, earned the 5 Series Gran Turismo its title as the judges applauded it as a car made for chauffeuring.

Mark Bursa, editor of Professional Driver magazine and chair of the judging panel, said: “The BMW 730Ld offers an exceptional mix of comfort, rear-seat luxury and driveability. Since 2009, the 7 Series has been improved, with better fuel economy now above 40mpg combined. And crucially, it’s part of a beefed-up manufacturer-backed chauffeur programme that makes it much more affordable for chauffeurs on a lease basis than either the Jaguar XJL or the Mercedes S-class”

Stephen Chater, BMW Group Corporate Operations Manager, said: “We are delighted to win these awards showing the 7 Series and 5 Series Gran Turismo to be class leading competitors in the chauffeur market. They highlight everything that BMW believe in; building cars of the highest quality that, thanks to EfficientDynamics, are amongst the most efficient in their sector.”

A total of 33 cars were entered for the Professional Driver Magazine Car of the Year Awards, which were judged by more than thirty judges from the chauffeuring and private hire sector and the motoring media.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW 7 Series are available on the BMW Chauffeur Programme, offering competitive contract hire rates, enhanced specification packages and predictable running costs.

To make these vehicles appeal to the driver as well as the driven, tailored benefits include BMW Service Inclusive, which lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles and covers all of the vehicle’s basic servicing requirements. As part of the programme, professional drivers are also covered in the event of an immobilisation which cannot be repaired at the roadside. Should this occur a replacement vehicle which is PCO licensed for London, can be provided, giving operators peace of mind that clients will always be catered for to the highest standards. London PCO licensed demonstrators are also now available, so customers can put the vehicles to the test with their clients.

The all-new, second generation BMW 1 Series occupies a distinctive niche within its segment, offering a unique and rewarding combination of agile, precise handling, improved aesthetics and innovative technology. It remains the only rear-wheel drive car in its class and, with a range of advanced TwinPower petrol and diesel engines, offers a sporty but fuel-efficient proposition boosted by BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies fitted as standard.

The previous generation BMW 1 Series has had enormous success selling more than 2.2 million units globally, as well as being the first car in the premium compact segment.

The elegant and dynamic styling of the new BMW 1 Series clothes a car that’s 83mm longer, 14mm wider and 30mm longer in the wheelbase than its predecessor. These dimensions create a car with increased cabin dimensions and, thus, greater interior comfort.

The new BMW 1 Series goes on sale in the UK on 17 September 2011, with a choice of three diesel and two petrol engines. Prices start at £19,375 otr for a BMW 116i ES.

Space is becoming increasingly scarce in the major conurbation centres and traffic density is growing continuously. Political and social conditions are changing. All these factors coalesce in increasing demands in terms of private transportation. The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter with electric drive provides an innovative look at changing urban mobility needs.

While the currently available, purely electrically-powered scooters have been almost exclusively used inside towns and cities to date due to their performance and range, which makes them suitable for short distances only, the concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter offers a much broader spectrum of use.

High range and excellent performance figures.
Since it was conceived as a future-oriented vehicle for commuting between urban areas and the city centre, therefore attracting funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, there were two main requirements for its development: dynamic figures
comparable to those of a maxi scooter with a combustion engine and a high range in realistic conditions of use.

The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter provides the necessary sustained output and maximum speed for safe and reliable overtaking on urban motorways and also when carrying two people. It is also easily capable of managing hill starts on steep slopes with a pillion passenger.

The development study also has the necessary maximum output to be able to achieve acceleration figures within the important 0 – 60 km/h range, which are at the level of current maxi scooters powered by a 600 cc combustion engine.

The high storage capacity of the battery allows a daily driving range of over 100 kilometres. In this way, the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle provides a long-term, zero-emissions urban and suburban travel option which is suitable for everyday use.

Fast charging at conventional power sockets.
The E-Scooter concept vehicle’s battery is charged at regular household power sockets as found in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan, so no special charging station is required. When the battery is completely flat, the charging period is less than three hours. However, practical experience has shown that the battery rarely runs out completely, so charging times are
generally shorter.

Frame.
Unlike existing maxi scooters with combustion engines, the concept vehicle does not have a main frame. Instead, the aluminium battery casing — which also contains the electronic system required for battery cell monitoring — takes over the function of the frame. The steering head support is connected to it, as is the rear frame and the left-hand mounted single swing arm with directly hinged, horizontally installed shock absorber.

Electric machine, power electronics and charging device.
Due to its high output, the BMW Motorrad development study has no hub motor with direct drive or planetary gearbox. Instead, the high-performance electric machine is mounted behind the battery casing. The secondary drive consists of a toothed belt from the electric machine to the belt pulley
mounted coaxially on the swinging fork pivot with drive pinion. From here, power transmission occurs via roller chain to the rear wheel. When the E-Scooter is decelerated in trailing throttle or when braking, the energy released is recuperated, thereby increasing the vehicle’s range by between 10 and 20 per cent depending on driving profile.

The electrical components required for the electric drive are installed on the top of the battery casing. The external battery electronics system permanently collects and monitors data such as the temperature and voltage of the battery cells, both during travel and while charging. The power electronics acts as a control system and controls the electric machine. The charging device includes a charge cable which allows the battery to be recharged at a conventional household power socket. In addition to the other components like an ISO insulation monitor, high-voltage indicator and a high-voltage distributor, a DC-DC converter is included. It is required to change high voltage to low voltage power to supply the 12 volt vehicle supply and especially for the control units.

Cooling system.
During travel, the electric machine and power electronics are liquid-cooled, as is the charging device during charging. An electric coolant pump ensures coolant circulation through the radiator. While a coolant is commonly used for the battery in electrically powered cars, the E-Scooter concept vehicle uses an air cooling system in order to save space.

Safety.
BMW Motorrad is one of the very few motorcycle manufacturers to be able to draw on its own experience and expertise in the automobile field in the development of electrically powered vehicles. Synergies are derived from the development of the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle not just in the ready availability of technical components but also in the area of high voltage
engineering and the associated safety requirements. Here for the first time, standards established by the leading automobile manufacturers relating to high voltage safety (> 60 volt) and functional reliability are being applied to a two-wheel vehicle with electric drive.

The all-new, second generation BMW 1 Series occupies a distinctive niche within its segment, offering a unique and rewarding combination of premium-quality handling, aesthetics and innovative technology. It remains the only rear-wheeldrive car in its class, and with a range of advanced TwinPower petrol and diesel engines, the new BMW 1 Series offers an even more sporty but fuel-efficient proposition. This is further boosted by BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies as standard. Longer and wider than the model it replaces, the new car simultaneously provides sleeker, sportier styling, while increased cabin dimensions and comfort result in an all new interior.

The new BMW 1 Series goes on sale in the UK on 17 September 2011, with a choice of three diesel and two petrol engines. Prices start from £19,375 OTR for a BMW 116i ES.

*On standard 16-inch wheels

Exciting, elegant, innovative design
The elegant and dynamic styling of the second-generation BMW 1 Series clothes a car that’s 83mm longer, 14mm wider and 30mm longer in the wheelbase, creating an even more sporty design. The drivetrain layout, with a longitudinally mounted in-line engine at the front and rear-wheeldrive, is unique within the compact segment. This not only improves the 1 Series’ handling, but is also reflected in its design, with typical BMW proportions: a long bonnet and wheelbase, and a set-back cabin.

This youthful, lively design is dominated from the front by the large BMW kidney-shaped grille, boldly shaped headlamp units and three-section air intake. The grille is tilted forwards, further emphasising its sporty stance.

Viewed in profile, the dynamic proportions of the new BMW 1 Series are even more apparent. The gently sloping roofline, sporty, angled rear window and flat side windows give the car the look of a coupé, while the Hofmeister kink extends well into the C-pillar. A wide rear door aperture aids access to the rear seats. Wide-set wheel arches further reinforce the powerful impression created.

EfficientDynamics: achieving more from less fuel
The BMW 1 Series continues as a market leader through its suite of EfficientDynamics technologies, featuring extensive use of intelligent energy management systems, including Auto Start-Stop function in both manual and automatic transmissions – the latter a first-in-class with eight speeds. An ECO PRO mode, activated using the Drive Performance Control (included as standard), is a new feature on BMW’s that adjusts various on-board systems to maximise efficiency. When in ECO PRO mode the throttle response is adjusted to encourage a more economical driving style. The extra economy created in ECO PRO mode is fed back to the driver, with the in-car displays showing the additional number of miles achieved.

At a later date, the all-new 1 Series range will be expanded with the introduction of the BMW 116d EfficientDynamics model. This unique model will generate an output of 116 hp whilst producing an average fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg, but at the same time emitting an expected 99 g/km of CO2.

The interior: premium finish, dynamic lines, driver-friendly cockpit
The interior of the new BMW 1 Series features a fresh and youthful combination of typical BMW design features and innovative treatments, with surfaces created from high quality, precision-finished materials. The characteristic BMW driver focus is apparent in the angled displays and controls of the central instrument panel, while the interior surfaces are layered, giving the interior of the new BMW 1 series an organic look and feel.

Given the additional length and width of the new model, it is no surprise that the interior provides even more occupant comfort and convenience than its predecessor. Not only is the driver ensconced in a sporty but comfortable environment, but rear-seat passengers also benefit from a further 20mm of legroom.

In addition, storage space has been given careful consideration, with large front door pockets, two cup holders on the centre console and a roomy glove compartment.

The new BMW 1 Series has an additional 30 litres of luggage space compared to its forerunner, taking the total to a generous 360 litres. By lowering the standard 60/40 split rear seats this can be increased to a maximum of 1,200-litres, with the added benefit of a flat load surface.

BMW’s revolutionary iDrive system is available as standard on cars with SE specification and above, comprising of a controller on the centre console, Favourites buttons and a freestanding, high-resolution 6.5 inch flatscreen monitor. This display is used for all information, entertainment, telecommunications and navigation functions, should satellite navigation be specified.

Drivetrain
The new BMW 1 Series is available from launch with a choice of two, new generation, four-cylinder petrol engines and three, redesigned, four-cylinder diesel units.

For the first time, a BMW four-cylinder petrol engine has been fitted with TwinPower Turbo technology. The new 1.6-litre unit is of all-alloy construction and features a twin-scroll turbocharger, a High Precision Direct Injection system, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. In addition, the new engine features BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies, which aims to continually increase driving enjoyment while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The BMW 118i produces a maximum output of 170hp at 4,800rpm, and a maximum torque of 250Nm. Peak torque is attained between 1,500rpm and 4,500rpm, demonstrating the flexibility of this new engine. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the 118i will sprint from zero to 62mph in just 7.4 seconds, going on to a maximum speed of 140mph. The efficiency of this new engine is proved by a combined fuel consumption of 47.9 mpg, and CO2emissions of just 137g/km.

The new BMW 116i’s four-cylinder TwinPower engine develops 136hp at 4,400rpm and a maximum torque of 220Nm between 1,350 and 4,300rpm, providing a more dynamic drive that its predecessor. This is illustrated by the 8.5 seconds the car takes to reach 62mph from a standing start, and the 130mph top speed. Even more impressive is the combined fuel consumption of 49.6mpg, and CO2emissions of just 132g/km, going down to 116g/km when teamed with the eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW already has a worldwide reputation for award-winning excellence with its diesel engines. In the new BMW 1 Series, BMW has chosen to push this advantage further still, increasing both power output and fuel efficiency. Modifications to the 2.0-litre engine include aluminium crankcases, reduced engine friction, thermodynamically optimised turbochargers with variable turbine geometry and next-generation common-rail injection.

The new BMW 120d embodies this technological advance, offering an increase of 7hp over its predecessor, taking maximum power to 184hp at 4,000rpm. Torque is also increased with an additional 30Nm available, equalling a substantial 380Nm between 1,750 and 2,750rpm. These figures equate to a 0 to 62mph time of just 7.2 seconds, and a maximum top speed of 142mph. However this performance is not at the expense of economy: the new BMW 120d manages 62.8mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The BMW 118d has a maximum output of 143hp at 4,000rpm, with strong peak torque of 320Nm between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 8.9 seconds, with a maximum speed of 132mph, yet manages 62.8mpg on the combined fuel cycle and emits just 118g/km of CO2.

Finally, the new BMW 116d offers a particularly appealing blend of performance and economy. With a maximum output of 116hp and peak torque of 260Nm between 1,750 and 2,500rpm, the 0 to 62mph dash is completed in 10.3 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 124mph. This performance is matched to a combined fuel consumption of 62.8mpg, with CO2 emissions of 117g/km.

The new BMW 1 Series is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The latter is available in Sport configuration, featuring more dynamic gear changes and shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Unique in segment chassis offers increased driver satisfaction
The new BMW 1 Series offers significantly improved comfort and unique handling thanks to its rear-wheeldrive, in-line engines, perfectly balanced weight distribution and advanced suspension technology. A wider track, 51mm at the front and 71mm at the rear, than its predecessor makes for an even more exhilarating drive.

Suspension on the front axle is by double-joint cross-struts, the high aluminum content of this structure effectively reducing the unsprung mass, while noise levels have also been reduced and crash performance improved. At the rear an advanced five-link arrangement is used, while the electromechanical power steering offers excellent precision with no interference from the drivetrain.

A raft of electronic systems increases both driving enjoyment and safety. These include optional Variable Sports Steering; Driving Stability Control (DSC) including Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and an electronically locking rear differential as standard. DTC is activated in DSC Off mode, applying brake force to either rear wheel in the advent of wheelspin to maintain traction through a corner.

In addition, a highly torsion-resistant body increases both responsiveness and passenger protection, and is complemented by a comprehensive range of safety equipment including front, side and head airbags.

Increased standard specification and personalisation options
The new BMW 1 Series offers the high level of standard equipment and a wide range of options expected of a premium segment car. The standard specification consists of a satin silver interior trim and Move cloth seats, with further interior trims and accent panels optional, as are Dakota leather seats or sports seats. Three standard and five metallic exterior paint colours are available from launch. Other additions to the standard specification of the new BMW 1 Series include a leather steering wheel, chrome exhaust and keyless start.

SE specification adds a freestanding high-resolution 6.5 inch flatscreen monitor, with operation via an iDrive controller, Bluetooth hands-free facility with USB audio interface and a multi-function leather steering wheel with speed limiting function.

Complementing the typical BMW range structure, two exclusive new model specifications have been introduced to allow customers to maximise the dynamic new design of the BMW 1 Series.

The BMW Sport model includes exclusive sport design sports seats, leather sports steering wheel, high-gloss black interior trim with Coral Red or grey accents and a host of other carefully selected design elements. External features include unique sport 17-inch star-spoke light-alloy wheels, Dark Chrome exhaust pipe and high-gloss black kidney grille, central air intake trim, side intake surrounds and rear bumper trim.

The BMW Urban model includes Metro cloth/leather seats, leather sports steering wheel and an acrylic glass interior trim in black or white with Oxide Silver accents. The exterior specification includes unique urban style 17-inch V-spoke alloy wheels and Chrome kidney grille with white slat sides and trim bar for the central air intake, amongst a host of stylish design details.

BMW ConnectedDrive
The new BMW 1 Series offers a comprehensive and unique (for a compact car) selection of optional driver assistance systems and mobility services. These include High-beam Assistant, Adaptive Headlights, Park Assist, Reversing Assist Camera, Lane Departure Warning including Collision Warning, cruise control with brake function, speed-limit and no-passing information. In addition, occupants can benefit from internet connectivity, smartphone and music player integration, real-time traffic information, as well as web radio, Facebook and Twitter apps.

BMW Motorrad celebrated the two-millionth motorcycle to roll off the assembly line at its BMW plant in Berlin Spandau. Motorcycles have been manufactured on this site since 1969 and bikes from the plant have been exported to 130 nations around the world.

This manufacturing milestone, which occurred on 6 May, 2011, was celebrated in style with a special ceremony attended by Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin, BMW Motorrad employees across the company and a host of invited guests. The bike which marked the milestone – a one-off special-edition R 1200 GS – was unveiled to a selection of VIPs and journalists by streetbike freestyle legend Chris Pfeiffer, after which it was handed over be raffled off as part of the ‘be Berlin’ campaign to promote the city.

Christian Pfeiffer said: “I’m really proud to present the two millionth BMW motorcycle here today. I have a really busy schedule but this kind of thing doesn’t happen every day so I really wanted to be here.”

Pfeiffer then parked the GS and leapt onto his F 800 R stunt bike to perform a special show in front of the invited guests and members of the Berlin plant workforce. He finished his display with a burnout with his rear tyre rubber spelling out ‘2,000,000’ on the tarmac.

Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head of BMW Motorrad, said: “BMW motorcycles embody ‘sheer riding pleasure’ in its most direct form and these machines are ambassadors of the BMW brand – and at the same time ambassadors of Berlin – all over the world. BMW bikes are exported with ‘Berlin’s air in the tyres’ to 130 countries and the long-standing relationship between Berlin and the BMW Group looks set to continue for a long time.”

With 1,900 employees the BMW factory in Berlin produces up to 510 motorcycles a day from all model series, as well as about 24,000 brake discs for the car division. The annual motorcycle output in 2010 amounted to 97,076 machines, whereas in the first year of production in 1969, a total of 12,000 motorcycles were produced in Berlin.

BMW will start selling parts and accessories direct to owners for the first time, thanks to a new partnership with eBay, the leading online retailer. ‘BMW Direct’, now live on eBay.co.uk, will satisfy the growing demand from motor enthusiasts for purchasing original parts online.

Previously, BMW owners wanting to pick up Genuine Parts have had to place their order via one of the many dealerships. With its new store on eBay, as well as merchandise BMW fans will be able to buy genuine BMW parts and accessories such as brake discs and car care products direct from the carmaker.

This is BMW’s first venture into e-commerce and will allow the carmaker to reach those customers not accustomed to visiting a BMW dealer regularly.

BMW, the first carmaker to open a store on eBay UK, joins over 100 other well-known fashion and home brands already selling new and fixed price goods direct to their customers via eBay’s UK site. Motor parts and accessories is one of the most popular categories among eBay’s 96 million active users worldwide.

All items sold through BMW Direct are offered from stock with free postage and packaging and are covered by a full two year BMW warranty. BMW UK will handle the shop front of BMW Direct with the processing of orders being handled by BMW Park Lane in London.

Carl Sanderson, General Manager Aftersales Development, said: “As a premium car manufacturer, we are always interested in understanding customer preferences when it comes to buying products. We recognise that there are customers who wish to buy BMW products but do not necessarily want to travel to a BMW dealer to make a purchase.

“As such we see eBay as the perfect solution for them. By embracing this modern retailing approach, we believe we can engage with and satisfy a number of additional customers through what is a new retail channel for BMW.”

Angus McCarey, UK Retail Director of eBay, said: “eBay UK is home to over 100 leading brands who realise the added value an eBay shop brings, whether they are already selling online or not. There are over 600,000 searches for BMW every month on eBay and BMW will now be able to access this existing, yet untapped customer base, while increasing its reach to the millions of other consumers who buy and sell on the site.”

Following the BMW M3 Coupé, BMW M3 Convertible and BMW M3 Sedan, a fourth body variant of this globally successful high-performance sports car is about to cause a stir. Under the strictest secrecy, the world’s first high-performance pickup has been created at the BMW M GmbH development centre. The sportiest example by far in this vehicle category, the BMW M3 Pickup will fire the imaginations of all motorists with a deep appreciation of top performance matched by a keen practical bent. 309 kW/420 hp under the bonnet and a rear-axle load capacity of up to 450 kilos take the hallmark BMW M relationship between race-oriented driving pleasure and everyday utility to an entirely new level. This unique vehicle has already completed extensive test and set-up drives on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in advance of its global unveiling on 1 April 2011.

With this vehicle, BMW M GmbH once again furnishes evidence of its exceptional competence in developing and building high-grade, individual dream cars. With a high-revving V8 engine at the front, a generously sized load area behind and a removable Targa roof above, driver and passengers in the BMW M3 Pickup will relish an unprecedented take on the familiar M feeling. Yet this spectacular new development is unmistakably recognisable as a member of the BMW M3 model family. Corroborating this kinship are not just the inimitable power of the engine, but also fine-tuned aerodynamics and a tailored suspension set-up. Measurements in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group’s Aerodynamic Test Centre showed a Cd factor on a par with that of the BMW M3 Coupé. Like every BMW M model, the BMW M3 Pickup has also demonstrated its dynamic potential on the North Loop of the Nürburgring. Official lap times have not yet been released, but the needle in the dial vouched for a top speed of 300 km/h.

The kerb weight of the world’s fastest pickup undercuts that of the BMW M3 Convertible by around 50 kilograms. Removing the Targa roof shaves off a further 20 kg while at the same time lowering the car’s centre of gravity. This most unusual experience of top-down driving pleasure in a BMW M3 thus goes hand in hand with further optimised dynamic handling.

The practical features of the BMW M3 Pickup are no less impressive. Maximum load capacity has been raised to 450 kilograms. The load bed of the BMW M3 Pickup is clad in high-grade structured aluminium sheeting and provides the biggest cargo capacity ever offered on a BMW M vehicle. In terms of the unit of measurement generally applied to premium automobiles, that gives the loading area of the BMW M3 Pickup the capacity to carry up to 20 standard 46-inch golf bags. What’s more, the BMW M3 Pickup is the first BMW M3 variant in the 25-year-plus history of this model range to come with a trailer tow hitch.

Notwithstanding these unquestionable stand-out qualities, the BMW M3 Pickup will not be heading for the golf course or series development, but will retain its status as an exclusive one-off. It is earmarked for use as a workshop transport vehicle for BMW M GmbH. With this in mind, the current BMW M3 Pickup – unlike a similar predecessor built back in the 1980s – has gone through the requisite procedures to earn its road certification. Which makes it officially a truck – but one that puts a whole new spin on the meaning of the word.

The hearts of sports car aficionados with an eye for beauty and a thirst for luxury and innovative technology will beat a little faster with the arrival of the new BMW 6 Series Coupe. The third generation of the top-class Coupe sees premium carmaker BMW adding another intoxicating chapter to its decades-long tradition in the production of exclusive dream cars. The new BMW 6 Series Coupe impresses with its irresistible design and inspires with even sharper driving dynamics than its predecessor, noticeably optimised comfort levels and extra space.

This is the only car in the segment to offer the combination of top-class sporting ability, exclusive touring comfort and a 460-litre (16.24 cu. ft) luggage space. Also on board to deliver the BMW 6 Series Coupe’s signature driving experience are a range of innovative driver assistance systems and BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment features. The new car therefore meets the highest – not to mention the broadest – expectations of driving pleasure in a large, premium 2+2-seater in incomparable style.

At a glance.
Captivating aesthetics, top-class performance, an exclusive interior and exceptionally innovative equipment features give the third-generation BMW 6 Series Coupe “dream car” credentials.
Two engine variants available from launch: BMW 650i Coupe with eight-cylinder powerplant (300 kW/407 hp), BMW 640i Coupe with six-in-line petrol unit (235 kW/320 hp).
Both engine variants come as standard with an eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox; BMW EfficientDynamics measures unmatched in the segment (including Auto Start-Stop function and ECO PRO mode in the BMW 640i Coupe); optimised efficiency combined with significant output increase over predecessor models of 30 kW (BMW 650i) and 35 kW (BMW 640i).
Newly developed chassis; only car in the segment available with Electric Power Steering and optional Integral Active Steering; Drive Dynamic Control fitted as standard, Dynamic Damper Control and Adaptive Drive optional.

Both models differentiate themselves from previous incarnations by way of a new front bumper with redesigned fog lights and redesigned Halogen headlights with an “eyebrow” element. When Xenon headlights are specified this eyebrow element features an LED illuminated light bar. At the rear the headlights have also been changed with a more detailed appearance.

However, the greatest change to ES, SE and Sport models is that they now come fitted with an Aero Curtain – a feature that channels the airflow around the front of the car to reduce aerodynamic drag, thereby increasing efficiency. Wheel arches are one of the main areas of aerodynamic drag and the Aero Curtain is BMW’s innovative solution to reduce this inefficiency. Derived from race technology, air is routed into two ducts in the front apron which then flows out of a narrow opening at high speed in the wheelarch. This jet of air effectively covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain and thus reduces turbulence.

As a result, CO2 emissions have been lowered throughout the range, with the 118d now rated at only 118g/km, while all 2.0-litre petrol versions have CO2 emissions of 155g/km or below.

As with all BMWs, the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible also come with a raft of other EfficientDynamics measures: Auto Start-Stop is fitted to all petrol and diesel models (excluding versions with automatic transmission), while Diesel Particulate Filters, Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering (excluding 135i), Intelligent Alternator Control and Optimum Shift Indicator for manual models are all standard throughout the range.

All BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible ES models come as standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, Dynamic Stability Control, Halogen headlights, MP3 playback capability and rear seat easy access system. Sport models have as standard 17-inch star-spoke alloy wheels, Sport multi-function leather steering wheel and front Sport seats – almost £1,200 worth of equipment that is currently offered for no additional cost over an ES model. SE models get rear Park Distance Control (PDC), front fog lights and automatic air conditioning with two-zone control.

All M Sport models, in addition to SE models, come with 17-inch light double-spoke style alloy wheels, door sill finishers with M designation, chrome front exterior trim, high-gloss Shadowline window surrounds, M aerodynamic bodystyling, M Sport suspension, Run-flat tyres, Sport seats and M Sport multi-function leather steering wheel.

BMW 135i M Sport versions add twin black-chrome exhaust tailpipes, a unique M aerodynamic package, M Sport suspension with 135i-specific calibration, hydraulic power-assisted steering, rear spoiler and up-rated high-performance braking system.

The new BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible go on sale March 2011, with prices starting from £21,960 OTR for the BMW 118d ES Coupe and £24,245 for the 118i ES Convertible.

The latest car to feature the letter M comes with stunning performance from a race-bred powertrain, a controllable, agile and exploitable chassis, the finest materials and components, and an attractive, sporty design to ensure it takes a deserved place among these icons.

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe heralds the introduction of a high performance sports car into a compact design that extends the BMW M portfolio and paves the way for a wider audience to appreciate M car ownership.

An M car has to have sublime driving characteristics first and foremost, but it must look stunning too, and the BMW 1 Series M Coupe does not deviate from this formula. The new entry point to M car ownership, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe’s dynamic looks also have a role to play.

The sporty character of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is expressed by a dramatic exterior design, with widened wheel arches, exclusive 19-inch Y-spoke M alloy wheels, and dual chrome tailpipes. A discreet spoiler lip generating additional downforce and a rear apron with side openings echoing the look of the front air intakes ensure the look of sporting intent matches the model’s sporting ability. L-shaped rear light clusters with two light banks fed by LED units complete the M car look. Exterior paint finishes are Alpine White non-metallic, Black Sapphire metallic and the exclusive Valencia Orange metalic.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe is fitted as standard with twin corona bi-xenon headlamps, and LED-fed positioning lights. A hallmark M-branded feature is the elongated chrome gill element on the front wheel arch, while the door mirrors are from the BMW M3, but tuned for the specific aerodynamic characteristics.

The standard sports seats in Boston leather feature Kyalami orange stitching and offer both driver and front passenger excellent lateral hold. The interior is exclusively modelled for the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, with an M leather steering wheel and the use of Alcantara with Kyalami orange contrast stitching on the door trim, door inserts, handbrake and gear lever gaiter and instrument binnacle cove. The M logo is also embossed in the front of the headrests.

Drivertrain

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe has at its heart a high revving, in-line six-cylinder engine with twin turbocharger, direct injection technology and double VANOS variable valve timing to develop a maximum output of 340hp. Such performance equates to a highly desirable car that takes just 4.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62mph. The BMW M tuned twin-turbocharger technology used consists of two relatively small turbos which, because of their low inertia characteristics, are active even at low engine speeds, ensuring no turbo lag, yet a peak power output which is achieved at 5,900rpm.

The great flexibility of the 2,979cc engine means that maximum torque of 450Nm is produced from as little as 1,500rpm. A flat torque curve for swift in gear acceleration sees peak torque maintained up to 4,500 rpm. This figure can be increased by another 50Nm when the car is under full throttle by means of an overboost function. With this performance the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will blast to 62mph from standstill to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. In fact, such is its stunning performance and handling, it is expected to be significantly faster around the Nürburgring Nordschleife than the previous generation E46 BMW M3.

The engine control system of the car allows two differing performance curves: in standard mode the BMW 1 Series M Coupe offers a more torque-orientated, flexible character to the engine’s performance delivery, while in M Dynamic Mode (MDM), activated by a button on the steering wheel, engine speeds rocket instantly, accessing the highest power levels as quickly as possible.

The cooling system of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe has been designed for constant high load, high speed track driving, through the use of an additional separate radiator and a specific air duct to deal with the increased thermal stress which can occur when driving in a particularly sporty style on the race track.

The efforts made in optimising performance and efficiency are also reflected in a newly developed dual-mass flywheel. Its lightweight construction benefits the engine’s efficiency and it also has an increased solidity which is able to cope with the six-cylinder engine’s high level of torque.

In addition, EfficientDynamics measures such as brake energy regeneration and needs-based control of auxiliary units ensure that recorded combined fuel consumption is 29.4mpg and CO2 emissions are 224g/km.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe is only offered with a six-speed manual transmission, specially designed to work with high-torque engines. This newly developed transmission is operated using a very short-shift M gearshift lever.

Chassis

The chassis of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe has been tested using BMW M GmbH’s racing-oriented development process, and uses numerous key components, originally conceived for the BMW M3, have been modified for use in this car.

Light weight is of course vital and the latest M car tips the scales at 1,495kgs courtesy of the extensive use of aluminium. The double pivot front axle and the five-link rear axle are made almost entirely of aluminium. Tubular stabilisers, axle links made of forged aluminium and aluminium shock absorbers round off the lightweight construction concept. With chassis technology derived directly from motor racing, a power-to-weight ratio of 227hp/tonne has been achieved. The footprint of the car is bigger than a standard BMW 1 Series Coupe with it being 55mm wider than the BMW 135i Coupe. The width of 1,803 mm is the result of optimisation of the front and rear axle to enhance driving dynamics.

As standard, BMW 1 Series M Coupe comes with Variable M differential lock, compound brakes, DSC with MDM and M Servotronic. The Variable M differential lock responds to differences in rotational speeds in the rear wheels, redirecting torque within a fraction of a second for optimum traction and maximum thrust on slippery surfaces and when accelerating out of bends.

The M-specific compound high-performance brake system of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe uses inner-vented and perforated discs with a diameter of 360mm at the front and 350mm at the rear, providing impressive stability even under extreme stress, as well as being extremely light.

Rack-and-pinion steering is fitted with Servotronic hydraulic power steering while the Dynamic Stability Control system that includes elements such as an anti-slip control function (ASC), the brake assistant Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), a drive-off assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), an anti-fading function and a dry brake function is also standard. The driver can activate M Dynamic Mode (MDM) on the instrument panel, raising the point at which the driving stability control system intervenes.

Specification
The BMW 1 Series M Coupe comes with an extensive range of standard equipment, including 19-inch Y-Spoke alloy wheels, two-zone air-conditioning, cruise control, BMW Radio Business with MP3-capable CD player and six speakers. It also has a Boston leather interior with Alcantara trim with Kyalami orange stitching in the cabin.

Optional extras include Comfort Access, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, Professional Navigation system with hard drive storage, Adaptive Headlights and High beam Assistant.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupe goes on sale in May 2011 priced at £39,990 OTR, with the first customer deliveries expected in May.

The BMW 327 Coupé and Sports Convertible of the late Thirties and the BMW 503 Coupé and Convertible from the Fifties were ideal in this regard. In more recent years, the first BMW 6 Series Coupé of the Seventies and Eighties and the BMW 8 Series Coupé in the Nineties exemplified the genre.

For 2011, the new BMW 6 Series Convertible is a car that offers its drivers a unique blend of distinctive styling, luxury and sporting performance. Already an iconic statement in style, the BMW 6 Series Convertible features an even more powerfully contoured roof while the sweeping bonnet, set-back passenger compartment with Hofmeister kink, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody more than any other BMW the key design DNA of the marque.

Two exceptional BMW turbocharged petrol engines, a newly developed chassis and a host of class-leading driver assistance technology ensure the new BMW 6 Series Convertible isn’t all show and no go, while interior space and comfort has been enhanced.

The BMW 6 Series Convertible is instantly recognisable thanks to its long sweeping bonnet, set-back passenger compartment and the unique fins of the soft-top. Complementing the fins is the “shark nose”, with a large, forward-slanted BMW kidney grille, broad air intakes, wide, contoured bonnet and muscular wheel arches. The feeling of surging forward through water continues throughout the fluid lines of the car: the designers took their inspiration for the harmoniously curved surfaces of the body from the movement of waves sent out by the bow of a powerful motor boat.

This look creates a low, wide, wedged V shape, which accentuates the car’s power and exemplary road holding. Continuing the theme, the waistline surface, which leads the body into the interior, mimics the character of a boat deck. High-quality chrome elements, such as the fog lamps consisting of a string of three LED units, on the outer edges of the front apron further accentuate the width of the car while the standard xenon headlights have BMW’s familiar double corona look.

At the rear, two-part rear light clusters give the typical BMW L-shape lights a particularly sporty, dynamic edge. Inside the units, two LED-powered light strips create a striking night-time look. The rear indicators and brake lights are also LED units.

One of the major talking points of the BMW 6 Series Convertible is its roof which is marvel of structural engineering that gives it the distinctive “fin” architecture.

The automatic opening and closing operation for the roof is activated as standard using a button on the centre console. The Comfort Access option allows the roof to be opened or closed using the remote control button on the car key. Opening the roof takes 19 seconds, with closing taking 24 seconds. Both operations can be activated while on the move at speeds of up to 25mph.

The fin roof of the new BMW 6 Series Convertible is available in three colours, including a new Anthracite Silver effect, which adds a stylish lustre.

The new BMW 6 Series Convertible is available from launch with two petrol engines: the 650i and 640i. Both offer unique character from their respective V8 and inline six-cylinder engines through the use of twin and single turbocharger technology to produce even more responsiveness and flexibility, exceptional smoothness and efficiency and, of course, high power levels.

The 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine in the new BMW 650i Convertible is unique in that the brace of turbochargers are positioned in the V-shaped area between the cylinder banks. This design results in more efficient packaging and greater engine efficiency. A maximum 407hp is developed between 5,500 and 6,400rpm, with peak torque of 600Nm available between 1,750 and 4,500rpm.

The new BMW 650i Convertible sprints from zero to 62mph in 5.0 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 155mph. For a model of such blistering performance and refinement, it is also extraordinarily efficient, with average combined fuel consumption of 26.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 249g/km.

The six-cylinder in-line engine in the new BMW 640i Convertible uses single turbocharger technology alongside petrol direct injection with VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. This enables the 3.0-litre unit to develop a maximum 320hp at 5,800rpm and maximum torque of 450Nm between 1,300 and 4,500rpm. This engine propels the BMW 640i Convertible from zero to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Perhaps even more remarkable are its efficiency figures. The BMW 640i Convertible achieves 35.8mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions

are only 185g/km, proving that at BMW luxurious sporting performance does not come at the expense of economy. Indeed, this model is fitted as standard with an automatic transmission that features Auto Start-Stop technology and an automatic active air flap control behind the car’s kidney grille for optimum engine performance.

As with all BMWs, both derivatives of the new 6 Series Convertible come with a raft of BMW EfficientDynamics measures to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In addition to the features highlighted on the 640i Convertible, both models have technology such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering (EPS), the need-based operation of ancillary components and intelligent lightweight construction to ensure maximum efficiency as standard.

An eight-speed Sport automatic gearbox is standard fitment on both models, and its wide range of ratios offer a perfect balance of muscular, sprinting performance, refined high speed cruising and low speed efficiency.

Reader Awards. Second place went to the iconic Rover Defender and third to the Alfa Romeo MiTo.

What Car? Editor in chief Steve Fowler said: “The results suggest that no one ever regrets buying a 1 Series Coupé, with the vast majority of readers dishing out a full five-star verdict. The entry level BMW was complimented for its driving ability as well as its fuel consumption. It’s a worthy winner.”

Skoda was named Best Manufacturer 2010, while Saab was the worst overall.

The Ford Focus CC was ranked as the worst car overall with the biggest number of complaints stemming from problems with leaky roofs. Over half of the readers involved in the research gave their Ford Focus CC only a one-star rating. However, more recent favourable reviews suggest that Ford may have got to the bottom of the leaky roof problem.

The award for best supermini went to Alfa Romeo for the MiTo, while the Skoda Octavia picked up the award for the best small family car. The open-top category was won by the Lotus Elise, and the Volkswagen Passat CC was the winner in the family car and compact executive category.

Ford collected the MPV prize for the Ford C-MAX, the Land Rover Defender won the crossover and 4×4 category, and the coupé category was awarded to the BMW 1 Series Coupé. The Mercedes-Benz CLS came top of the luxury and executive cars class, and the British-built MINI Clubman won the estate class.

The What Car? Reader Awards comprise the opinions of 30,000 whatcar.com readers who have experience of what the cars are like to own and live with on an every-day basis. The 2010 Reader Awards cover 170 cars.

“Our relationship with our readers is very important to us and to all car buyers, and our annual What Car? Reader Awards provide invaluable information for anyone choosing a new car,” said Fowler.

A BMW 5 Series Touring has always existed to be the perfect estate car for a premium car buyer who wants it all. Clearly it is a package that has global appeal as since the first ever car was introduced in 1991, more than 670,000 have been sold.

Now in its fourth generation, the latest BMW 5 Series Touring comes with a choice of three petrol and four diesel engines and a number of innovative packaging solutions for all manner of loads. And to ensure that the dynamic driving experience of all BMWs is offered in this most useful of models, all variants feature double wishbone front suspension while a self-levelling air suspension at the rear ensures that heavy loads do not affect the Touring’s ability to deliver first class agility and composure.

The BMW 5 Series Touring, which comes with Dakota leather upholstery and automatic air conditioning with two-zone control as standard, goes on sale in the UK on 18 September, 2010.

Design
The new BMW 5 Series Touring has been sculptured to be more sporting and dynamic looking than its predecessor. The dramatic styling and sloping rear roof line create an elegant silhouette, but function follows form as the latest Touring is even more practical.

Interior
All models feature innovative storage solutions such as a 40/20/40 near flat-folding rear seat backrests, a luggage load cover that retracts and lowers automatically with the tailgate and an independent self-opening rear window for ease of loading smaller items – a unique feature in the market. Luggage capacity is increased by 60 litres to 560 litres (1,670 litres) from the previous generation.

As an integral part of the optional Extended Storage package, the rear seat backrest can also be adjusted to a more upright position through seven lockable stages. This gives a reduction of the back seat inclination by 11 degrees, which increases the luggage compartment volume by a further 30 litres.

Drivetrain
The BMW 5 Series Touring line-up offers three petrol and four diesel engines, which utilise a range of innovative technologies including turbocharging and High Precision Direct Injection, as well as award-winning EfficientDynamics technologies.
With CO2 emissions of 135g/km for the manual version and 55.4mpg on the combined cycle, the BMW 520d Touring’s fuel economy and emissions are class-leading for the sector. To improve efficiency of the 520d Touring’s drivetrain, manual versions come with an Auto Start-Stop function – a first for the sector – which cuts down the amount of time idling when stopped at road junctions or in traffic congestion.

The BMW 520d marks the entry point into Touring ownership and the 523i is its petrol-powered equivalent. It’s nomenclature might indicate a four-cylinder engine, but this model actually uses a 3.0-litre naturally aspirated powerplant with a High Precision Direct Injection system with a focus on efficiency. Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale the flagship BMW 535i Touring is the first to combine BMW single turbocharger technology, High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC, the variable valve management system, in the same package. Its diesel equivalent, the 535d, offers twin turbocharging and common rail direct injection technology to provide the go.

Sitting between these appealing Touring models are the straight-six engined 3.0-litre all-aluminium powerplants in the BMW 525d and 530d Tourings that now deliver greater performance than the models they replace, both in terms of sporting performance and fuel consumption and emissions. A 3.0-litre six-cylinder powered BMW 528i Touring completes the range.

A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard on all models. All BMW 5 Series Touring models can be fitted with a new eight-speed automatic transmission as an option except the 535d which has an automatic as standard. The BMW 520d Touring is the first car in the world to offer a four-cylinder power unit with an eight-speed automatic gearbox to create an estate with unparalleled levels of refinement.

EfficientDynamics
The new BMW 5 Series Touring comes with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies. Innovations such as Optimum gearshift indicator, Brake Energy Regeneration and Active Aerodynamics. Auto Start-Stop technology also debuts on the manual transmission BMW 520d Touring – a first for the sector.

Chassis
The wheelbase of the new BMW 5 Touring is now the longest in class, at
2,968 millimetres, and 82mm longer than its predecessor, to provide greater interior comfort.
The new double wishbone front axle and a multi-link rear axle ensure that occupants are provided with a composed ride while the rear air suspension ensure loads are kept level. Models specified with Variable Damper Control or Adaptive Drive incorporate the Drive Dynamic Control (DDC) chassis configurator to enhance ride and handling still further. DDC allows for fine tuning of the chassis with the choice of Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+.

The kit – a new ECU and an Akrapovic exhaust system – increases peak power and torque while optimising the bike’s sophisticated engine, braking and power management systems for short circuit riding and racing.

Ayrton Badovini’s 2010 FIM Superstock 1000 championship-winning bike uses the HP Race Power Kit – and has already proven itself to be a devastatingly effective package. It can also be found on the Jentin Racing-BMW Motorrad S 1000 RR being raced by Richard Cooper in the British National Superstock championship.

Technical highlights of the HP Race Power Kit include:

Maximum engine output increased by 4bhp and 6lb.ft to 197bhp (147kW) and 88.5 lb.ft (120 Nm) with power and torque significantly bolstered throughout the key 5000 to 9000 rpm midrange

Once installed, the power mapping for the four engine management riding modes (‘Rain’, ‘Sport’, ‘Race’ and ‘Slick’) is identical and the S 1000 RR delivers the full 197bhp across all four

The different modes instead alter the electronic rider aids with the Race ABS reducing input and the Dynamic Traction Control allowing full power at greater lean angles as the modes move from ‘Rain’ through to ‘Slick’

Engine braking on overrun is reduced giving more balanced corner entry

Pit-lane limiter activated when the start button is held down in first gear (actual speed maintained may vary with the bike’s gearing)

Akrapovic titanium and carbon-fibre full exhaust system saves 6.8kg over stock and includes a baffle which allows the exhaust to meet noise regulations in place at some circuits

Dave Alexander, BMW Motorrad Parts and Accessories Manager, said: “This kit has been developed with the championship-winning European Superstock team. It’s technology fed straight down from the World Superbike team, adapted by the Superstock racers and is now available for racing and trackday riding S 1000 RR owners. The Race Power Kit can help turn the S 1000 RR into a race winner – as Ayrton Badovini has proven!”

The four riding modes are pre-programmed – however, the HP Calibration Kit, due to be released later in the year, will allow settings to be customised.

The kit is available now August at a cost of £2467.08 including VAT. Owners and teams may fit the HP Race Power Kit; however, it must be checked and activated at a BMW Motorrad Dealership.

ALPINA’s ‘trademark’ blend of sporting character and limousine-like comfort has also developed with a new switchable eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s adjustable electronic dampers have been reconfigured for it’s combination of 20” wheels and non-runflat tyres.

John Quigley, Managing Director of ALPINA GB, describing the new ALPINA B5 as an unbeatable combination of luxury, exclusivity and performance says : “With the next generation BMW M5 yet to be announced, the B5 fills a significant market gap”.

He adds: “The fact that Goodwood was chosen for the world debut of the car demonstrates the importance ALPINA attach to the UK market”.

First deliveries of the B5 Bi-Turbo start later this year with availability through Sytner, UK concessionaires for ALPINA.

As one of the most successful cars in history with nearly 5 million models sold during a near 40-year lifetime, the BMW 5 Series Saloon has defined the executive saloon sector, offering handling and performance combined with elegance and luxury.

Now in its sixth iteration, the elements that make up those benchmark standards have been enhanced. The near perfect 50:50 weight distribution inherent in all BMWs is still to the fore, while an advanced rear-wheel-drive chassis and developments of class-leading and award-winning engines, now offer higher power and increased efficiency. The latest in innovative driver assistance and safety technology completes the package.

Setting new standards in the sector, the new BMW 5 Series is the first to feature Auto Start-Stop, another step in BMW’s award-winning EfficientDynamics programme, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a double-wishbone front suspension.

With its long wheelbase and short overhangs, long bonnet, dynamic lines, athletic body and the coupé-like, sleek roofline, the new model is distinctively a BMW 5 Series – designed and built to ensure the sixth generation retains the legacy created by the first five.

Drivetrain
Customers will be able to choose from four diesel powerplants and four petrol engines, which utilise a range of innovative technologies including single and dual turbocharging and High Precision Direct Injection, as well as award-winning EfficientDynamics technologies.

For drivers looking for unparalleled economy the new 184hp BMW 520d delivers class-leading emission levels of 129g/km of CO2 as well as a combined fuel consumption of 57.6mpg. It achieves this through a combination of lightweight engineering (aluminium crankcase), the latest generation of common-rail direct fuel injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, mated to its four-cylinder engine.

Other engines available in the 5 Series range include the new BMW 525d which offers an equally impressive combination of performance and parsimony. Powered by a 3.0-litre all-aluminium engine, it develops maximum output of 204hp yet still records a combined 45.6mpg and 162g/km CO2 emissions to set a new benchmark as the most efficient six-cylinder diesel model on the market. The new BMW 530d shares the same engine with an output of 245hp but returns an impressive 44.8mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of only 166g/km.

Both the BMW 525d Saloon and the 530d Saloon equipped with an automatic transmission achieve the crucial 160g/km CO2 emissions target to benefit from taxation incentives. The flagship of the diesel 5 Series line-up is the BMW 535d. This 299hp powered car features a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine that is capable of an electronically-limited 155mph top speed and a zero to 62mph time of 5.7 seconds, yet still manages 46.3mpg and emissions of only 162g/km.
Other highlights of the engine range include the new BMW 550i, which features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 delivering 407hp. The 3.0-litre engine in the BMW 535i is the first to combine single turbocharger technology, High Precision Direct Injection and variable VALVETRONIC valve management.

The naturally aspirated six-cylinder engined BMW 528i and 523i, have a version of High Precision Direct Injection with a greater focus on efficiency. In the new 258hp BMW 528i this unit records a combined 36.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 182g/km. Using the same technology the 523i achieves 37.2mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 177g/km.

All models except the 550i come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard but all can be specified with the new eight-speed automatic gearbox, including the 520d, making that model the first four-cylinder car in the world available with an eight-speed transmission.

Enhanced standard and optional equipment
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon not only offers the driver more value, but improves on its previous incarnation’s residual values proposition too. Standard specification now includes Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth telephone preparation, automatic air conditioning with two-zone control, front and rear Park Distance Control and 7-inch control display and iDrive.
A raft of intelligent new technology, including Park Assist automatic parking, Integral Active Steering, Head-up Display and Night Vision with pedestrian recognition can also be specified.

Key facts

Choice of four petrol engines and four diesel engines.

BMW 520d Saloon now records a sub 130g/km CO2 emissions figure.

Eight-speed automatic gearbox available on all models including 520d – the first time a four-cylinder powered vehicle has featured such an advanced transmission.

The new BMW X3 is set to raise the bar in the premium sports activity market this year when the latest model goes on sale in the UK. With what will be the lowest-emission four-wheel drive model in the sector, the first to have start-stop with auto transmission, unparalleled agility, significantly upgraded cabin and a raft of sector-first technology, the new BMW X3 will set a new benchmark.
With a class-leading diesel engine, numerous chassis configurations courtesy of Variable Damper Control, as well as UK specific equipment packages and innovations such as Head-up Display and online connectivity, thanks to ConnectedDrive, the new BMW X3 offers customers the perfect sporty four-wheel drive vehicle, whatever their activity.

The new BMW X3 combines BMW’s X character with a dynamically stretched silhouette to produce an elegant, durable and sporting car. The typically characteristic upright kidney grille and triangular headlight arrangement of BMW X models is reflected in the front end of the X3 ensuring a powerful presence, further emphasised by the flared wheelarches and short wheelbase. Meanwhile the horizontal rear lines on the rear emphasise the X3’s robust character.

High-grade materials and intelligent packaging are integral to the new BMW X3’s interior. As always, the asymmetrical instrument panel and centre console are orientated towards the driver, while the latest generation iDrive, with 6.5-inch screen as standard, ensures all infotainment capabilities are easily accessible. The 8.8-inch high-resolution screen of the navigation system in the Professional Multimedia package featured in the new BMW X3 is the largest on-board monitor in its segment.

Throughout the cabin are a large number of storage compartments, trays and cup holders. The three rear seats offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances and significantly more leg and elbow room compared to its predecessor.

With a volume of between 550 and 1,600 litres, the luggage compartment of the new BMW X3 is also one of the best in its segment. But it is not just about pure volume – useable space is essential to the SAV customer, and the new BMW X3 has an adaptable interior which can be changed to suit personal requirements.

The rear seat backrests can be split 60:40 as standard or as an option 40:20:40 where the three segments can be folded down either individually or together. In this way it is possible to adapt the luggage compartment according to requirements.
Offering unrivalled levels of performance and efficiency is BMW’s philosophy no matter what type of car and this concept has been applied to the Sports Activity Vehicle sector too. As a result, the new BMW X3 xDrive20d now offers better performance and higher efficiency than any of its rivals.

Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with aluminium crankcase and common rail direct injection, it delivers a maximum power output of 184hp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 380 Nm between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. This results in a zero-62mph time of 8.5 seconds, reaching top speed of 130mph, yet CO2 emissions for this four-wheel drive vehicle are only 149g/km, with average fuel consumption of 50.4 mpg.

Other engines will be launched at a later date, but in the UK the BMW X3 xDrive20d will account for approximately 80 per cent of all sales when all other engines have been introduced.
The new BMW X3 xDrive20d with automatic transmission achieves identical acceleration, top speed and fuel consumption, with a CO2 emission level of 147g/km. This reduction in emissions is thanks to the X3 being the first BMW model in the UK to team Auto Start-Stop technology with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. The Auto Start Stop function also features as standard on the manual transmission.

The drivers’ Sports Activity Vehicle
The first generation BMW X3 set the bar when it came to the driving dynamics of this type of vehicle, and the second generation builds on that exceptional agility with newly conceived suspension technology, electronically controlled driver assistance and advanced four-wheel drive.

For drivers who want to personalise the feel of their BMW X3, Variable Damper Control is available for the first time on this model. The electronically controlled dampers adapt to road surface conditions and the style of driving, while the driver is able to influence the action of the dampers by means of the Drive Dynamic Control system.

This function enables the driver to choose between Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes using a button on the centre console. As well as damping behaviour, it can adjust the character of the accelerator, engine response, power steering weight, DSC response thresholds and – depending on desired options – the shifting dynamics of the automatic transmission.
Electric Power Steering, is incorporated in the BMW X3 for the first time, allowing precise handling and increased efficiency. Variable sports steering is also available for the first time as an option, and reduces the degree of steering movement necessary to turn the front wheels in various conditions including parking, cornering and swerving manoeuvres.

As standard, the new BMW X3 comes with xDrive permanent four-wheel drive technology, an electronically controlled system that ensures variable distribution of drive to the front and rear axles. Linked to DSC, Dynamic Stability Control, xDrive can counteract oversteer or understeer at an extremely early stage, and help to control the car through bends by sending increased drive to the rear wheels while, if needed, braking the inside rear wheel to increase the car’s mid-bend agility and traction.

The commitment to offering the most complete driving on and off-road experience in the sector means the new BMW X3 also features completely redeveloped suspension technology with a double-joint spring-strut axle at the front and a multi-link rear axle.

Pricing and specification
The new BMW X3 xDrive20d SE is even better value than its predecessor. At £30,490 OTR, it is actually £115 less than the outgoing model, yet is equipped as standard with Nevada leather upholstery, two-zone air conditioning, iDrive controller and colour display.
The new BMW X3 can be specified with a range of innovative features. The choice of options range from a panoramic sunroof, high-end audio equipment and the Professional Multimedia package with hard-disk storage, to automatic boot lid operation and a tow coupling with electronically pivoting ball head.

The choice of systems offered under the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance banner is also unique in the segment, and include Head-up Display, Adaptive Headlights, High-beam Assistant and reversing camera including Top View, giving a 360 degree panoramic view for the driver.
Following extensive research of buying habits of previous BMW X3 buyers, the new generation model can be specified with several packages that bring together the most popular options at cost-effective prices.

These packages include:
Business Advanced Media package – £2,165
Business navigation, Bluetooth telephone preparation with USB interface, voice control and telematics, and BMW Assist.

Professional Multimedia Media package – £2,465
Professional navigation, Bluetooth telephone preparation with USB interface, voice control and telematics, and BMW Assist.

Visibility package – £1,490
Xenon headlights, Headlight wash, Adaptive headlights, High-beam assistant and dimming and folding exterior mirrors.

Cold weather package – £790
Steering wheel heating, front and rear seat heating, and through loading with 40:20:40 seat split.

Introduced at BMW Motorrad’s new premises in Munich, these two new touring motorcycles include elements of the Concept 6 study, introduced in Autumn 2009, and of BMW’s seven-decade heritage of using in-line six cylinder engines in performance cars.

This new, internally-developed engine develops 118kW (160bhp) and 175 Nm (129lb.ft) of torque.
Over 70% of maximum torque is available from 1,500 rpm. It is the lightest and most compact six-cylinder in-line engine in serial motorcycle production, weighing just 102.6 kg and measuring 560 mm in width. It features DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) for maximum safety when accelerating (optional extra).

The new 299hp BMW 535d Saloon

The fourth and most powerful diesel version of the new BMW 5 Series – the 299hp 535d Saloon – will go on sale in September. BMW twin turbocharger and common rail direct injection technology helps make this 3.0-litre straight-six all-aluminium engine one of the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel unit. Its 299hp available at 4,400rpm while maximum torque is 600Nm is available from 1,750rpm.

A smaller turbocharger operating just above idling speed gives the BMW 535d instant surge, while a larger turbo is activated at higher speeds, supplying additional power for maximum performance. Equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the new BMW 535d Saloon will accelerate from zero to 62mph in just 5.7 seconds.

But along with its dynamic capability comes efficiency. Thanks to the latest generation common rail system operating at a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar and guaranteeing a particularly accurate supply of fuel, the BMW 535d achieves an astonishing average combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg.

New engines for the BMW 5 Series Touring

Soon after its launch, in September 2010 two additional diesel engines and a third straight six-cylinder petrol engine will be added to the BMW 5 Series Touring range.

As with the Saloon, the Touring will get one of the world’s most powerful straight-six diesel engine: the 299bhp 535d with BMW twin turbocharger and common rail direct injection technology. Sprinting from zero to 62mph in only 5.7 seconds, the BMW 535d Touring is as parsimonious as it is powerful averaging a combined fuel consumption of 44.8mpg.

Completing a full line-up of diesel models will be the BMW 525d Touring. Featuring a 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder engine plus a single turbocharger with variable intake geometry and common rail direct injection, the engine delivers 204hp at 4,000rpm, with maximum torque of 450Nm between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. The BMW 525d Touring accelerates from zero to 62mph in 7.3 seconds and has an average fuel consumption of 44.8mpg.

Using the 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder with High Precision Direct Injection, the BMW 528i Touring delivers a power output of 258hp at 6,600rpm and achieves maximum torque of 310Nm between 2,600 and 5,000rpm. The BMW 528i Touring sprints from zero to 62mph in just 6.9 seconds, while average fuel consumption is 35.3mpg.

American artist Jeff Koons’ BMW M3 GT2 Art Car really caught the eye in France.

While the no. 78 BMW M3 GT2, with drivers Jörg Müller (DE), Augusto Farfus (BR) and Uwe Alzen (DE), finished sixth in the LM GT2 class, the BMW Art Car, with Dirk Werner (DE), Dirk Müller (DE) and Andy Priaulx (GB) at the wheel, had to retire early.

Despite this, Koons drew a very positive conclusion from the endurance classic at the “Circuit de la Sarthe”, as he reveals in this interview.

Mr Koons, unfortunately the Le Mans 24 Hours didn’t go the way all BMW fans had hoped for with the BMW Art Car. Did you still enjoy the experience?

Jeff Koons: “This race has been a very invigorating experience. It’s amazing to see the commitment of all the people involved. The fans sleep in tents and stay awake for far more than 24 hours to celebrate this event. This has me really going, as I understand that it is something truly special for all the people to be here. It’s unfortunate that the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car had to retire early, but it’s part of racing.”

Do you feel for the team you got to know well over the course of the Art Car project?
Koons: “Yes, I would have loved to see the team win, but it wasn’t to be. I know how committed they are and how much precision and care they put into their work. Of course we would have loved to see the car win. I would love to give it another chance and have it compete again.”
Power and dynamics are just two of the catchwords in motor racing. Do these terms also appear in the sphere of modern arts?

Koons: “Yes, there are many parallels. Everything is a metaphor for human life. If we build machines, it’s all metaphoric for our own bodies. These race cars are like gladiators out there. They are performing with full power and full impact.”
Usually you create pieces of art that are made to last. The BMW M3 GT2 Art Car, however, went out into a fight against rivals on the track. Was this a new experience for you to see your art in danger?

Koons: “That was really interesting for me and obviously a part of it. This project has felt so special to me, and working on it reminded me of human history. A history that you can trust the most is almost a biological narrative, it’s our DNA. From the beginning of time to now. What people experience here is that life doesn’t go so much through its physical form, but through the experience that is generated within people.”

Just imagine that you are on your way to BMW Welt and you know that you have to get your tickets for the guided tour through the BMW Munich Plant at the Info Counter South. The following questions occur to you in quick succession: Where can I park? How do I get into the multi-storey car park and how can I find my way around in BMW Welt? Naturally, the navigation system can show you the way to BMW Welt. Unfortunately, more detailed information on complex destination venues like this is not available – yet. Specialists at BMW Group Research and Technology have taken up this challenge with the aim of giving BMW drivers even more confidence and convenience.

The experts are unlocking completely new potential for navigation in the microNavigation research project. The researchers are using the BMW 3 Series as a prototype. A detailed large-scale map display allows complex enclosed destination areas to be visualised which are not covered by road maps in today’s navigation systems or only have incomplete coverage. This extended navigation solution does not abandon drivers where conventional navigation leaves off. Even outside the vehicle, a mobile unit guides drivers to their desired destination and back to the vehicle. “The realistic visualisation of a building like a complex multi-storey car park by means of a micro-Navigation card in the Central Information Display of the research prototype gives the user a clear navigation and information advantage that goes significantly beyond the conventional scope of a road navigation solution,” explains Carsten Isert, Project Manager for microNavigation at BMW Group Research and Technology.

Looking at it in detail, the system works like this: Drivers are able to download information about their destination in advance on their home PC. If there is a microMap for the destination area, the driver is offered this automatically and they can select their destination within the microMap. This destination is automatically transferred with the map data to the vehicle and augments the navigation available there. Naturally, sometime in the future it will also be possible to download microMaps at will while the driver is on the move. Researchers have also developed lane-specific positioning for the vehicle by networking camera information, GPS coordinates and map data. The driver is guided to the desired destination on a lane-specific route – for example a free parking space near the lift in the best position. Detailed maps in combination with precise car-park positioning provide support for drivers in finding their way around car parks and during the journey. After parking the vehicle, the data can be transferred to the driver’s mobile device. This handheld then provides continuous navigation and helps drivers to navigate on foot in complex and unknown destination areas. “microNavigation gives drivers tailor-made navigation during the journey and at the destination and thereby significantly increases confidence and convenience,” adds Robert Hein, Head of Navigation and Data Services of the Future at BMW Research and Technology.

Higher levels of output and efficiency make the model’s unique edge in this rarefied market sector even sharper.

The new B3 S reflects the ALPINA ethos of ultra high performance combined with environmental consciousness. The 3 litre straight six now yields an extraordinary 400hp at 6000 rpm and massive torque – 540 Nm at 4500 rpm. In Coupe form this delivers 0-62 in 4.7 seconds and 186 mph, yet economy is improved (29.1 mpg combined) and CO2emissions lowered to 224 g/km.

The B3S is readily identified by a redesigned front spoiler and a new rear diffuser which encloses the tailpipes, reducing lift and ensuring optimum engine cooling. The ALPINA Classic alloy wheels get the new design treatment seen on the latest B7.

With switchable six-speed automatic transmission in Saloon, Touring, Coupe and Convertible forms, the B3 S stays faithful to another ALPINA manufacturing edict – that the sporting nature of its cars should not compromise luxury, comfort and everyday usability.

First deliveries of the B3 S Bi-Turbo start in July with availability through Sytner, UK concessionaires for ALPINA.
