Chevrolet today introduced two concept coupes at the 2012 North American International Auto Show aimed at inspiring next-generation buyers to take the wheel and suggest ideas for a car they can co-create.

“Chevrolet has always stood for making the aspirational attainable for all generations” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation. We’re seeking out our newest customers’ opinions, listening to their advice, and engaging them in new ways.”

According to U.S. Census data, there are 80 million American consumers approaching 30. They represent 40 percent of today’s potential car-buying public and a combined $1 trillion in purchasing power.

Over the past year, Chevrolet has conversed with young consumers across the United States. Based on their feedback, the Chevrolet concepts explore the styling and functionality this group of new buyers says they are looking for in a car.

Code 130R, the first Chevrolet concept, is a four-seat coupe with a simple upright profile. Painted in an all-new red metallic paint with matte anodized gold wheels, Code 130R features heritage performance-inspired styling and rear-wheel drive. With an aggressive front fascia, Chevrolet fender flares, straight body side and Chevy crossflag emblem, Code 130R makes a link to Chevrolet’s performance heritage.

Code 130R’s designers conceived the turbocharged engine to be tuned to work in tandem with eAssist technology. By shutting off the engine at stops, recapturing braking energy, and smoothing torque during acceleration, this concept takes automotive electrification to the next level and balances turbocharged performance with fuel economy.

Tru 140S, the second Chevrolet concept is a front-wheel-drive, “affordable exotic” four-seat sporty coupe. The three-door hatchback was designed to be an attractive-yet-affordable sports car. Shown in an all-new matte white with Chevy performance chrome wheels featuring crossflag emblems, Tru 140S is designed to look confident, exotic, expensive and fast. Tru 140S is based off the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze and the groundbreaking Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range.

Tru 140S designers want to demonstrate technologies typically found in more expensive cars, including direct injection and a starter-based stop-start technology, balancing internal combustion and electrification to deliver high value and improved fuel economy.

The concepts share attributes younger buyers say they value:

Sedan-sized functionality in performance coupe form that seats four passengers

Interior connectivity and convenience featuring innovative storage, WiFi, smart phone integration with Chevrolet MyLink and heads-up display

40 MPG with a 1.4L Turbo Ecotec engine with approximately 150 horsepower

Possible production price range in the low $20,000s

“Young customers tell us they want functionality with coupe-like aesthetics. Both the Code and Tru body styles resonated with this audience,” said Frank Saucedo, director of the GM North America Advanced Design studio in Los Angeles where the two concepts were developed.

Inside the concepts, connectivity and personalization enable the individualization that the generation says is essential.

“This buyer prizes connectivity. Allowing them to stay connected by integrating their personal devices through MyLink and WiFi enabling the vehicle to be their own docking station,” said Saucedo. “The interiors currently exist in 2D only. This allows us the flexibility to continue the discussion and encourage more dialogue as we continue to develop these concepts.”

From Detroit, the pair of Chevrolet concepts will travel to major auto shows, key lifestyle events, one-on-one experiences and other venues such as college campuses. Chevrolet also will engage customers using the social media tools that young consumers use to talk with one another.

“For the car company that can successfully engage this generation, there is a tremendous opportunity,” said John McFarland, senior manager for Chevrolet Global Marketing, who heads youth research for the brand. “At Chevrolet, we want to build authentic and meaningful relationships with these customers on their terms. We want to hear what they have to say, engage them in our design process, and give them what they want – not what we think they want.”

General Motors today announced enhancements to the vehicle structure and battery coolant system in the Chevrolet Volt that would further protect the battery from the possibility of an electrical fire occurring days or weeks after a severe crash.

The enhancements come in response to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Preliminary Evaluation to examine post-severe crash battery performance.

NHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation on November 25, 2011 following a severe-impact lab test on a battery pack that resulted in an electrical fire six days later. The test was conducted to reproduce a coolant leak that occurred in a full-scale vehicle crash test last May that resulted in an electrical fire three weeks later.

The Volt is a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and has earned other safety awards from key third-party organizations. Through the first 11 months of 2011, Volt owners accumulated nearly 20 million miles without an incident similar to the results in the NHTSA tests

“The Volt has always been safe to drive. Now, we will go the extra mile to ensure our customers’ peace of mind in the days and weeks following a severe crash,” said Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of Global Product Development.

GM will conduct a Customer Satisfaction Program to further protect the Volt battery from the possibility of an electrical fire occurring days or weeks after a severe side crash. Modifications will:

Strengthen an existing portion of the Volt’s vehicle safety structure to further protect the battery pack in a severe side collision

Add a sensor in the reservoir of the battery coolant system to monitor coolant levels

Add a tamper-resistant bracket to the top of the battery coolant reservoir to help prevent potential coolant overfill.

GM conducted four successful crash tests between December 9 and 21 of Volts with the structural enhancement. The enhancement performed as intended. There was no intrusion into the battery pack and no coolant leakage in any of the tests.

“These enhancements and modifications will address the concerns raised by the severe crash tests,” Barra said. “There are no changes to the Volt battery pack or cell chemistry as a result of these actions. We have tested the Volt’s battery system for more than 285,000 hours, or 25 years, of operation. We’re as confident as ever that the cell design is among the safest on the market.”

Volt customers will be individually notified when the modifications are available for their vehicle. The enhancements are being incorporated into the Volt manufacturing process as production resumes this month.

The modifications and enhancements will be applied to all Volts, including vehicles sold in Europe. The European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) has awarded the Chevrolet Volt the top five-star safety rating.

“We’re focused on one thing right now: doing what’s right for our customers,” said GM North America President Mark Reuss. “We’ll live up to our commitment to make sure our customers are delighted with their purchase.”

Vehicle electrification technologies are important to the future of the automotive industry, which is why GM will continue its leadership role in helping the Society of Automotive Engineers develop standards that will help tow truck operators, salvage yards and vehicle recyclers in the proper handling of electric vehicle components. GM will help develop educational materials that can be used by these stakeholders in the future.

Save up to £6,000 in Chevrolet bargain bonanza

Price reductions on Spark, Cruze and Captiva

Limited offer at participating dealers

Most sales take place after Christmas, but then Chevrolet has never been a brand to do things conventionally.

That’s why the American brand is offering incredible reductions on several of its most popular models in the run-up to the festive period, rather than after.

Customers will be able to save up to £6,000 on certain Chevrolet models ordered between November 10th and November 30th 2011, at participating dealers.

The biggest savings are on the Captiva 2.2 VCDi LT seven-seat SUV. Priced at £21,695 during the sale period, it offers the luxury and accoutrements of many much more expensive SUVs for less than many smaller, five-seat rivals. Luxury touches include electronic climate control, Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, 17-inch alloys and rear parking sensors among others – a lot of kit for £6,000 below list price.

There are also excellent savings on the race-proven Cruze – the all-new hatchback model is available in 1.6 LS form at £11,495 on the road – a saving of £2,500. Equipped with air conditioning, ESC, electric front windows, a CD stereo, electrically-adjustable mirrors, follow-me-home headlights and remote central locking, the model is impressively equipped. Yet, at the sale price, it costs less to buy then many rival manufacturers’ less well equipped superminis.

Those looking for something smaller can still save big. During the sale, the popular Spark 1.0+ model, with standard air conditioning and electric front windows, is on offer at £6,875 – a saving of £2,000 against list. That makes it one of the best value five-seat, five-door cars on the market, as well as one of the most distinctive and fun to drive.

The only downside is that these offers can’t last forever – they’re available from November 10th to 30thonly, subject to availability. For details of your nearest participating dealer, visit www.chevrolet.co.uk or call 0800 666 222.

The all-new Chevrolet Aveo is set to arrive in showrooms next January, with great value pricing to match its striking looks.

From only £9,995 for the 1.2 LS model, the Aveo builds on Chevrolet’s reputation for delivering great value for money – but it’s more than the keen pricing that will make it appeal to customers.

With its dramatic sculpted front end styling and imposing wedge-shaped profile, the New Aveo brings a sharp, edgy feel to the supermini segment.

“Much like we did with the Spark, we wanted to take the image of small cars away from being cute and cuddly,” said Chevrolet UK Managing Director Mark Terry. “Instead, we’ve delivered a car that’s striking, bold and has attitude. It draws on our iconic models, such as the Camaro and Corvette, for its styling influence, with cues such as the distinctive round headlamps and dual-cockpit interior giving it a lot more personality than you’d normally find in this sector of the market.”

Even in basic trim, the Aveo gets features such as remote locking, a rear spoiler, CD-stereo radio, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors and electric front windows.

The mid-range LT model adds more luxury features – 15-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel audio controls, air conditioning, a four-way adjustable driver’s seat, sunglasses holder, a Driver Information Centre, Bluetooth phone compatibility, and a chrome gear knob surround, yet is priced from a very competitive £10,995 on-the-road.

The top specification LTZ variant has features normally reserved for bigger and much more expensive cars, including a leather steering wheel, front fog lamps, rear parking sensors and automatic headlamps. Prices for the LTZ start at £12,195.

Four engines will be available from launch – a 1.2-litre petrol unit developing 86PS, a 1.4-litre petrol engine with 101PS or two 1.3-litre diesels, with power outputs of either 75 or 95PS. All come with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the 1.4-litre models have the option of a six-speed automatic.

Full technical specifications and equipment levels will be confirmed ahead of the car’s showroom debut in January 2012, while a full table of prices appears below.

In life, not everything is black and white – but for one night only at London’s famous Ace Cafe, it was. The car, the band, the venue, in a glorious celebration of Americana that marked the iconic American brand’s 100th anniversary.

Chevrolet pulled the wraps off a very special one-off model of its Cruze, which paid tribute to one of America’s most iconic movies of all time.

The ‘Cruzemobile’ echoes the look of the famous ‘Bluesmobile’, made famous by John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in The Blues Brothers, a film with one of the most famous movie soundtracks of all time.

And to further add to the celebratory theme, Chevrolet’s own Cruze Brothers band performed a live set to a crowd of over 500 guests at the Ace Cafe, the world’s most famous car, bike and music venue on London’s famous North Circular Road.

The cafe was opened in 1938 & post war, with the British motorcycle industry at its peak, became the place to meet until its closure in 1969. It was reopened in 2001 on the original site by current owner Mark Wilsmore.

Since then, it has grown to once again be the foremost venue for car and bike fans across Europe, with meetings for various types of vehicle on every night of the week. The Cruze Brothers act was the highlight of the late summer all-American Cruise-in, which attracts fans of US metal from all over the continent.

“We were delighted to have the support of Chevrolet at our American cruise-in night,” said Wilsmore. “The brand is celebrating its centenary and is as much a cultural icon as the Ace Cafe itself. We’ve a number of Chevy owners who are regulars here, so it was great to welcome them and their unique car and entertainment.”

Chevrolet UK Managing Director, Mark Terry, added: “As we celebrate 100 years of Chevrolet, it’s right that we should mark this by celebrating other elements of American culture – we’re the only US brand to truly establish a foothold across all segments of the UK and European car market, and much of that is down to the proud heritage and cultural associations that people make with our brand. The Blues Brothers is an all-time American classic, much like Chevrolet itself.”

The Cruze Brothers themselves are a pair of music teachers from St Neots, Cambridgeshire. Dave Wiggins (Joliet Jake) and James Proctor (Ellwood) have been touring together as a tribute band for the past two years, and perform a two-hour set that includes re-enacting scenes and dances from the movie – often referred to as Grease for blokes – as well as a live soul, rock and blues act. For more information on the band, visit www.blues-brothers-tribute-band.co.uk

As for the future of the Cruzemobile – who knows. “We’re hoping it’ll be popular enough to go on tour itself,” said Mark Terry. “But one thing’s for sure, and it’s that we won’t be making it available as an option pack!”

Having celebrated its world debut at concurrent shows in the U.S. and China, the new Malibu will form a cornerstone of Chevrolet’s presence at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. In Europe, where Malibu was not previously available, the all-new version will go on sale next year and be the brand’s new flagship.

“The Malibu will come on top of the seven new entries launched in Chevrolet’s centennial year,” said Wayne Brannon, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe. “The Chevrolet Malibu is the brand’s new top-of-the-range offering, bringing proven value with a premium feel to Europe’s midsize segment.”

Sleek appearance and a new sense of athleticism

With a wheelbase of 2,737 mm and a track width of 1,577 mm, the new Malibu has an athletic posture. Its grounded stance and an integrated spoiler combine to give the car an assertive look. Thanks to a drag coefficient close to the Volt’s 0.28, the Malibu will be one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in Chevrolet’s passenger vehicle line-up.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s signature dual-port grille, powerful Xenon or high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, large Chevrolet bow-tie badges in front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element tail lamps. Wheel sizes range from 17- to 18-inch options to suit an array of buyer preferences. Nine exterior colors and up to four interior color combinations can be chosen from, depending on the model selected.

More space, comfort and refinement

The new Malibu features an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, spacious and comfortable environment with plenty of shoulder and hip room.

The metallic or chrome accents used, the soft ambient lighting along the instrument panel and in storage pockets as well as the contrast stitching add to the car’s interior refinement. In strategic locations, noise-deadening materials have been applied for a quiet, relaxed ride.

The Malibu has a number of storage areas, including a radio face that articulates up and down to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind its seven-inch touch-screen radio display – a first in a midsize car. The full range of latest infotainment options that the Malibu offers includes new radio systems and an available navigation system. On up-level specifications, Bluetooth wireless connectivity enables hands-free use of smart phone apps while the device remains safely stowed.

Precise tuning enables outstanding ride and handling

Customers will be able to chose between two fuel-efficient and powerful 4-cylinder gasoline or diesel-fueled engines with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter displacements and a power output of 164 hp and 169 hp, respectively. In Europe, the all-new Malibu will be available with both manual and automatic transmission.

The Chevrolet Malibu has been engineered to be on par with more expensive sedans in terms of ride and handling. Benefiting from continuous refinement of award-winning midsize entries, GM engineers have tested, tuned and calibrated the Malibu on rural roads, highways, freeways and the company’s validation facilities around the world.

Its solid body structure is as rigid as any in the global midsize sedan market. This allows for precise tuning and dynamic vehicle control, both of which are key to the Malibu’s excellent ride and handling characteristics. Other systems contributing to the Malibu’s ride performance are a premium steering gear for smooth, precise responsiveness and on-center feel, a McPherson strut front and multi-link independent rear suspensions, and an isolated engine cradle that disrupts the transfer of noise into the passenger cabin.

Chassis control technologies include four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS), full-function traction control, four-corner electronic stability control (ESC), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), brake assist system (BA), corner brake control, hydraulic brake fade assist and drag torque control.

Rock solid safety performance

When it comes to safety features, the new Malibu will be one of the best-equipped vehicles in the segment. It will be pedestrian-protection-compliant in all markets where it is sold. A total of 8 airbags, dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front-passenger pelvic/thorax side-impact airbags as well as roof rail-airbags with rollover protection, are standard safety features for all global markets. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are available with mid- and up-level offerings.

The Malibu will be built in manufacturing facilities around the world, including the United States, South Korea and China.

Over the course of its 100-year history, Chevrolet has created and refined an array of startlingly beautiful car designs. Some of these have moved on to become true road legends, such as the Belair, the Suburban, the Corvette, or the Camaro. Though Chevrolet cars are very diverse in their appearance, reflecting the different uses they have, there is a common design and brand DNA and a set of exterior and interior features that distinguishes them from a multitude of competitors.

Among the global Chevrolet design themes in evidence today is a dynamic tension which once again can be sensed across the entire range. Whether it is the Spark mini-car or the Captiva SUV: Chevrolet designs are expressive and assertive, evoking sense of pent-up energy and strength. Likewise, modern Chevrolet designs acknowledge the heritage that made the brand great, revisiting concepts from the past without becoming locked in a retro focus.

Both the Chevrolet Miray and the Colorado Rally Concept, which will celebrate their European premiere in Frankfurt, embody these design principles and take current trends in their respective segment a step into the future. Whereas the powerful Colorado Rally Concept previews the next generation of this midsize pickup truck, the futuristic-looking Chevrolet Miray merges a jet-inspired exterior with an advanced hybrid powertrain technology.

Chevrolet Colorado: Broad-shouldered proportions, tightly wrapped bodywork

Sitting atop an AWD chassis, the double-cab Colorado Rally Concept, first revealed at the Buenos Aires International Auto Show, conveys strength through every square centimetre of its bodywork. It aims to deliver maximum authenticity and was designed with a rally raid category in mind.

With its wide, confident posture, 18-inch aluminium wheels with mud terrain tyres, a height-adjustable (up to 50 mm) suspension system and Fox Racing Shox shocks (travel distance: 140 mm), the second show version of the Colorado midsize pickup truck communicates durability and performance. The first Colorado show truck was unveiled at the Bangkok Motor Show in April this year.

“Chevrolet has built trucks right from the start and they are an essential part of our brand. Through its purposeful design, refinement and uncompromising capability, the Colorado Rally Concept creatively reinterprets our proud heritage,” said Wayne Brannon, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe.

Large headlamps with LED lighting elements, Chevrolet’s signature dual-port grille, a carefully sculpted hood and muscular fibreglass fenders define the Colorado’s front appearance. Two additional lights let into the front edge of the roof and into the side mirrors, acrylic rally-car windows with air inlets and front and rear tow hooks underscore the car’s off-road credentials. The Colorado Rally Concept is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine and sports two 5.5 hp winches that have been incorporated into its front and rear bumpers.

While the Colorado’s bodywork is painted with a triple coat of pearl white and sprinkles of ‘golden’ particles, its roof and bumpers, the stylised roll-bar as well as the inside of its load bay, which carries a spare tyre and tool boxes, are made of charcoal-colored plastic. The decklid has two large openings for improved aerodynamic performance and a better rear view. Other fine details include the exposed fuel cap and, of course, the Chevy bowtie that is proudly emblazoned on the front and the decklid.

Inside, designers focused on ergonomics, safety and functionality. A dark, ash-grey color dominates the interior, which contrasts nicely with the silver painted roll cage and other metal details. The occupants sit in neoprene-lined seats with orange stitching whereas the upper instrument panel is made of textured leather.

A high-performance steering wheel designed for aggressive handling helps the driver navigate the truck through rough terrain. It features integrated LEDs that function as a quick display tachometer. Direction-finding assistance is provided by a satellite navigation system positioned in front of the navigator. The Colorado’s five-point seatbelts are directly attached to the roll cage. Meanwhile, a dedicated fire-extinguishing system ensures that any fire in the passenger cabin and the engine compartment is quickly brought under control.

Further interior highlights include:

A master switch that is integrated to the centre stack. It has two key functions: starting the engine and disconnecting every system in the vehicle, in case of an emergency.

An “air boost” system that quickly cleans the cabin after the car has entered a dust cloud during an off-road chase.

A hydration pack positioned behind each seat. A food solution is delivered to the occupants through a small tube.

Chevrolet Miray: Strengthening the bond between car and driver

First unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show in March this year, the Chevrolet Miray concept offers a fresh interpretation of some typical Chevrolet design cues while paying tribute to Chevrolet’s sports car heritage. The Miray is propelled by two front-mounted, battery-powered 15-kW electric motors for quick acceleration and zero emissions in urban driving.

“‘Miray’ is Korean for ‘future.’ The concept strengthens the bond between car and driver and takes a fresh look at what a sports cars of the future might be,” explains Brannon. “Many of the components used in its drivetrain are an extension of our systems. The Miray demonstrates the potential for rescaling and extending today’s propulsion technologies.”

Being small and open like the 1963 Monza SS, and light and purposeful like the 1962 Corvair Super Spyder, the Miray has an aerodynamic fuselage reminiscent of modern jet fighters. Its dual-port grille is flanked by LED headlamps with new signature daytime running lamps. The front and rear fenders evoke Chevrolet Corvettes of the past and express the concept’s sports car spirit. Carbon fibre spoilers at the corners help control down force and airflow. From above, the cabin has a unique diamond shape.

The wedged body side is made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) and carbon fibre. An angled character line, with ambient lighting underneath, creates a sweeping line of light when the car is in motion, bringing a warm glow to the sculptured body. Le Mans racer-style scissor doors underscore the Miray’s racy looks.

At the rear, the tail lamps which have been placed under the ducktail surface are a nod to Chevrolet’s twin element execution. The Miray sports 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels made of aluminium carbon-fibre composite. The strong turbine theme evokes movement, even when the Miray is stationary.

A radically stylish interior

The interior of the Miray features a melange of brushed aluminium, natural leather, white fabric and liquid metal surfaces for an overall effect of sculptural velocity. Its passenger compartment is surrounded by a carbon-fibre shell, which gives it a lightweight yet rigid structure. The wrap-around twin cockpit has drawn inspiration from the iconic Chevrolet Corvette: It is driver-focused while fully engaging the passenger in the driving experience.

Designers took a unique approach to displaying information, using back projection on the instrument panel. Information in front of the driver has been prioritised into three zones, which eliminates unnecessary visual clutter and allows the driver to focus on the thrill of driving.

The centre touch screen flows down to an aluminium support, which evokes a fighter jet’s nose with the landing gear down. The exterior surface flows down into the interior to meet the reinforced console, connecting the front and rear of the car.

Ambient lighting, which starts from the upper instrument panel and flows into the seat back area, adds a sense of luxury. Seat cushions and headrests are connected by the lightweight carbon-fibre shell and mounted on a single aluminium rail. The headrest area follows the exterior form, integrating with an air scarf for open-air driving.

An interesting detail is the centrally located start button. When it is pressed, the column-mounted retractable meter cluster rises like the canopy of a single-seat aircraft and “interactive projection” appears on the white surface.

Retractable rearview cameras, which replace traditional rearview mirrors, extend from the side glass electrically. In city driving, the forward-facing camera operates in conjunction with GPS to overlay navigation information with real-time video.

Flexible propulsion system matches Miray’s futuristic looks

The Miray’s “mid-electric” propulsion system, located primarily behind and beneath the driver, has been engineered to maximise performance and fuel efficiency. Its two front-mounted 15-kW electric motors are powered by a 1.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that is charged through regenerative braking energy. The system can be switched from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive.

A 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-charged engine mounted behind the cockpit combines with the electric motors for performance driving. It provides spirited torque, while seamlessly integrating electrification technology that sets a new standard in the compact roadster segment.

A dual-clutch transmission obviates the need for a torque converter, thereby enabling a reduction of the engine’s size. Shifts are quick and firm, with the shift pattern having been tuned for improved top speed in performance mode. A start-stop system operates in conjunction with the Miray’s dual-clutch transmission.

While Donington Park successfully hosted the British round of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) just last weekend, at the very same time UK motoring journalists converged on the Leicestershire venue, as Chevrolet launched their all-new Cruze hatchback, utilising the flowing country roads around Donington to evaluate the new car.

As Chevrolet strengthened their grip on another World Championship title on track, with a double win from Yvan Muller, UK journalists got to grips with the all-new Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, putting the car through its paces on the road, as well as participating in a fun rally inspired event on Donington Park’s specially prepared gravel rally stage.

Chevrolet’s Craig Cheetham explained: “The timing and location was perfect for us to launch the new Cruze hatchback. With our WTCC team in attendance providing hospitality for press, we were able to make use of the great facilities at Donington before allowing press the opportunity to test the new car on the local roads. With a great mix of rural and urban routes right on Donington’s doorstep we were able to offer press an all-encompassing opportunity to try our new car, throwing in a bit of fun on a specially prepared rally stage too. A great event for all who attended.”

The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback is due to go on-sale later this month, with prices starting at £13,995.

The Chevrolet Orlando has proven it can pull more than just admiring glances, after winning the accolade of Britain’s Best Value towing car in the annual Towcar Awards.

Voted for by a panel of testers from Practical Caravan, What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club, the striking seven-seat MPV was praised for its towing stability, pulling power and all-round practicality.

The awards also evaluate the car on its owner appeal when not towing, factoring in such details as kerbside appeal, quality, comfort and running costs.

“You get a lot of car for your money with the Chevrolet Orlando,” said Practical Caravan editor Nigel Donnelly. “It’s very stable, has plenty of space for a family’s luggage and is sturdily built. It’s an impressively roomy and capable towcar.”

Accepting the award, Chevrolet’s National Sales Manager, Daniel Gregorious, said: “The Orlando already encapsulates everything the family motorist would want from a car, so to receive recognition for its towing ability, and from such prestigious publications and organisations, is a real bonus. It’s yet another area in which the Orlando excels, not to mention its tremendous value for money.”

Launched in February, the Orlando has already established itself as one of the best MPVs in its class, with prices starting from as little as £16,410 on-the-road – tremendous value for a full-size, well-equipped seven-seater.

It has a maximum towing weight of 1,500kg, with an 85 per cent match between kerbweight and towing weight of 1,471kg, meaning it’s capable of towing most medium-to-large touring caravans.

Unlike most electric cars, the only time a Chevrolet Volt really needs a charge attached to it is when you buy it in the first place!

And when it goes on sale in the UK next year, the Volt will cost from £28,545 after the government backed £5,000 electric vehicle grant, making it less expensive than some traditional petrol or diesel engined five-door hatchbacks.

Of course, by plugging it in, you’ll save yourself a fortune. The Volt has an electric-only range of between 30 and 50 miles depending on terrain and traffic conditions, after which its on-board generator kicks in to sustain battery power.

Unlike conventional hybrids, the electric drivetrain – known as E-REV, Extended-Range Electric Vehicle – directly powers the car’s wheels. The petrol engine is there to simply prevent the battery going flat, thus eliminating the fear of ‘range anxiety’ experienced by users of other electric vehicles, who are dependent on a limited range and a charging infrastructure before they can use their cars without compromise.

Yet if the driver is only commuting, he or she need never put any petrol in the car, meaning it only ever needs fuelling for longer journeys.

The Volt’s technology is so clever that it has won the car multiple awards in the USA, where it was crowned North American Car of the Year, as well as winning similar plaudits from major titles Motor Trend and Automobile Magazine.

Chevrolet chose to announce the UK pricing of the Volt, which comes to showrooms in right-hand-drive form in Spring 2012, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the US-manufacturer was celebrating its centenary.

“We wanted to back up a century of progress with our vision for the next century,” said Chevrolet UK Managing Director, Mark Terry. “Except it’s more than a vision, it’s a reality.”

“The Volt is a truly incredible car – the first ever compromise-free electric car with zero-emissions capability. You can use it for going to work and back during the week without ever putting fuel in, but it’s also an electric car that you can use for a family holiday. There are never any concerns that a flat battery will leave you stranded.”

All UK Volts will come with full leather interior as standard, adding a touch of luxury to the world of electric commuting.

Customers interested in finding out more about the Volt should visit the dedicated Volt customer site at www.voltchevrolet.co.uk

The Chevrolet Camaro has already got lots of fans going ga-ga, and with the UK prices now announced it’s bound to be a number one hit!

Arriving in showrooms in early 2012, the beefy American muscle car will be available from only £34,995 on-the-road. For that, customers will get a 6.2-litre V8 engined performance icon, with 432PS and suspension fine-tuned for European roads. The convertible model, which comes with a power-folding roof, will cost £39,995. Both variants are full European specification, with type-approved lighting and European-calibrated dials.

Available in left-hand-drive only, all UK versions of the Camaro will be the top specification model, with 20-inch alloy wheels, Brembo performance brakes, full leather upholstery with a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a Boston Acoustics nine-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and rear parking sensors.

Options will include a choice of premium paint colours, bonnet stripes, interior trim accents, a sunroof, polished alloy wheels and automatic transmission, which will cost £1,500 extra.

Chevrolet announced the Camaro pricing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the car was the centrepiece of the American firm’s centenary display, and was also driven up the hill by reigning British Touring Car champion and TV personality Jason Plato, better known for campaigning a Chevrolet Cruze.

“It’s with great delight that we welcome the Camaro to the Chevrolet UK product range,” said Mark Terry, Chevrolet UK Managing Director. “In the last two years we’ve replaced every model in our range with something new, and the Camaro’s DNA has been present in each and every one of them. Chevrolet cars are affordable, accessible, great to drive and full of character – none more so than our new halo model.”

Customers wishing to order a new Camaro, or who wish to find out more, should register their interest by phoning 0800 666222 – calls are free from UK landlines.

Commuters – and traffic wardens – were surprised to see a life-size replica of a car made from 1.5 tonnes of Play-Doh parked up in a London street today.

The hand-crafted sculpture was created by a team of eight model makers over a two week period to mark the UK launch of the new Chevrolet Orlando family-friendly seven-seater car.

Research by the car company provided the inspiration for the world’s biggest Play-Doh sculpture – 4.6 metre by 1.8metre – as the modelling compound topped a poll of the most-loved toy from yesteryear. Over 1,000 UK adults voted for their favourite nostalgic toy from their childhood with Play-Doh gaining a fifth (19 per cent) of the vote closely followed by LEGO (17 per cent) and Kinder Egg (15 per cent).

Les Turton from Chevrolet UK comments:

“The new Orlando deserves another look and we believe this mould-breaking MPV is a real head-turner – especially when it’s made from tonnes of the nation’s most popular aqua-marine putty . Hopefully our launch will appeal to the inner-child in every parent and it will become a firm family favourite.”

At the Geneva Motor Show, Chevrolet will pull the wraps off the variant that will bring it even greater success in the sales charts.

The newcomer will draw styling influences from the Cruze Hatchback concept previewed at the Paris Motor Show last September, which achieved plenty of praise from showgoers and industry commentators alike.

For while the new hatchback body might bring extra practicality to the Cruze, which already has one of the biggest load areas in its class, it brings new levels of style to match its versatility. With its attractive sweeping coupe roofline and short front and rear overhangs, it enjoys the same dynamic stance as the saloon model, but with even greater sleekness.

It will also be offered with a new range of engines, with the range-topping diesel unit the same as that of the newly-launched Orlando, with 163PS and a standard six-speed manual gearbox.

“The Cruze Hatchback will give us a huge opportunity in the UK,” said Chevrolet Managing Director, Mark Terry. “This year alone, we’ve got four major new model launches that will have a significant positive impact on our product line-up in the UK, as well as the Camaro to cast a halo over the rest of our range.

Alongside Orlando, the New Captiva and New Aveo, the Cruze hatch delivers greater choice and versatility to our customers, and as well as offering the same great value and quality finish that our retail customers are used to, it will give us a far greater presence in the hotly contested fleet market.”

Chevrolet has worked flat out to keep up with demand for the Cruze four-door since it went on sale in mid-2009, exceeding sales expectations across the globe, including in the USA where it has recently gone into production.

As well as performing well in the sales charts, it has enjoyed huge success in motor sport. Legendary tin-top racer Jason Plato won the British Touring Car Championship in the Cruze in its first ever season in the sport, while the Chevrolet team also took home the World Touring Car Drivers and Constructors Championships.

“Motor sport is part of Chevrolet’s DNA,” added Mr Terry. “What we learn on the track is passed down to our road cars, and this latest incarnation of Cruze proves that.”

The Cruze Hatchback will go on sale in the UK in the summer of 2011, with prices and exact specifications to be confirmed nearer the time.

Orlando. A thousand things to do in a day. Fun, entertainment and relaxation for family and friends. That’s the holiday spirit Chevrolet has packed into its first ever European MPV. Like the Chevrolet models recently launched in other market sectors, it doesn’t follow convention. Orlando’s design – part MPV, part crossover – breaks the rules of a historically conservative segment; it makes a statement and stands out from the crowd.

Chevrolet’s new compact MPV brings swagger to the segment by adopting a bolder look with its low roofline and crossover inspired silhouette, while retaining the distinctive and recognizable Chevrolet ‘face’ depicted by the split radiator grille and bow-tie badge.

Based on the show car concept first seen in 2008, the Chevrolet Orlando is nevertheless a true family car for the times, combining 7-seater practicality, interior flexibility and generous load space.

“We’re confident the Orlando not only brings great value for money to the MPV class but at the same time something fresh – a certain function with attitude, as we put it,” says Wayne Brannon, president and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe. “I believe it will also bring more new customers to the Chevrolet brand.”

“The new Orlando MPV has a key strategic role to play in Chevrolet’s continued product offensive in Europe as it kicks off an ambitious seven-product launch program over the next 15 months.”

There’s no question that the Orlando will offer a refreshing alternative to many of the MPVs currently on the market. The distinctly recognizable Chevrolet ‘face’ is complemented by a profile characterized by the low swept roofline and the muscular, protruding wheel-arches, housing 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels. The wheel arches enhance a ‘body in, wheel out’ appearance while at the same time ensuring Orlando keeps its agile, sporting stance.

Orlando’s space, storage and safety

While the exterior of the new Chevrolet Orlando is sure to attract plenty of attention, the interior too features many of the latest design cues from Chevrolet such as the Corvette-inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue backlighting to the centre console. Distinctive design is nothing without well-thought-out functionality however, so the ‘theater-style’ seating arrangement of the Orlando’s three rows of seats, the generous load area and the numerous storage solutions will also grab the attention of family motorists.

The interior seating is referred to as ‘theatre-style’ because in spite of the sweeping roof-line, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third rows which allow the Orlando’s occupants to get an even better view both forwards and to the side and without compromising head-room. In fact headroom in the third row of seats in the Orlando is superior to a number of competitor MPVs.

Numerous seating configurations are possible with either second or third rows folded independently or together to make a completely flat load area. The second seat row also has a roll-and-fold facility for both the left and right-hand outer seats to allow easy access for passengers into, and out of, the third row.

And when the time comes to shifting large loads of cargo, Orlando’s load area is one of the most voluminous in the compact MPV class with 1,499 litres available when both rows of seats are folded (856 litres below window line).

Any hard-working family car needs plenty of storage space for all the bits and pieces that collect inside. Like the original concept car, the final production version of the Orlando obliges with a range of compartments of different shapes and sizes and different locations, including a coin holder and two large cup holders in the center console, map and bottle holders integrated into the front and rear doors and a number of individual compartments in the cargo area.

However, perhaps the most ingenious is a storage area hidden behind the front fascia of the audio played, and within easy reach of the both the driver and passenger. Seen originally on the Orlando concept car, designers have been able to integrate a usefully large area which is revealed by flipping up the face of the stereo, and large enough for such items as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets. Within the space itself there is also a standard auxiliary jack and a USB port for MP3 or iPod connectivity, depending on the trim level.

Safety for the vehicle’s occupants is always a paramount consideration for this class of car, and in Orlando owners will be reassured by both the attention to detail and the inclusion of the latest technology that has gone into this aspect of the car’s design. Most of Orlando’s body structure is constructed of high strength steel to form an effective passenger safety cage providing protection in the event of a collision to the front, rear and side of the car. Should a collision occur, Orlando’s occupants will be protected by six airbags – twin front, side and curtain.

One of the biggest challenges often faced by emergency services when assisting at the scene of an incident is helping the occupants of vehicles when the doors are locked. However, this is not a scenario that Orlando owners will be faced with; Orlando is fitted with crash sensor technology, where the doors unlock automatically on detection of an impact.

Three engines, three trim levels to fit every family’s needs

Under the bonnet there is a choice of three of Chevrolet’s fuel efficient engines, one petrol and two diesels. All engines are transversely mounted 4-cylinder units with double overhead camshafts, 16 valves and either multi-point fuel injection, or in the case of the diesels, common rail technology. All the engines have a cast-iron cylinder block and alloy head.

The one petrol engine available at launch is a 1.8 litre which produces 141 hp at 6200rpm and 176Nm of torque at 3800rpm. Maximum speed for this version is 115mph. Emissions and fuel economy from the 1.8 petrol are competitive with emissions at 172g/km and consumption at 39mpg.

The two diesel engines are of the same displacement but tuned to give different power outputs and drive characteristics. The heart of both engines is a 2.0-litre with 4 valves per cylinder and common rail injection fuel system. However, the more powerful of the two produces 163 hp at 3800rpm and offers 360Nm of torque at 2000rpm. The second output version has 130 hp and 315Nm at the same engine speeds.

Maximum speed of the Orlando for the diesel engine with 130 hp is 112mph and with 163 hp is 121mph. Emissions and fuel economy are at an even more competitive 159g/km and 47 mpg for both.

Customers will also be able to choose from three different trim levels when Orlando goes on sale. Orlando’s launch marks a shift for Chevrolet Europe as it adopts the same trim names being implemented globally; expect LS, LT and LTZ trims to become the norm in future Chevrolets. And in another first for Chevrolet Europe, only cars sold in right hand drive markets will carry the trim badge on the exterior.

Whatever model customers opt for they are guaranteed a high level of equipment with standard items even on the entry level LS including electronic stability control, six airbags, and power mirrors.

The mid-range LT version also features such items as parking sensors and steering wheel mounted audio controls, while the LTZ gets larger 17-inch alloy wheels, auto dipping rear view mirror and electronic cruise control as examples.

Being based on Chevrolet’s successful and award winning Cruze saloon, already proven to offer excellent ride and handling and safety, Orlando drivers are assured of a safe, yet involving and rewarding drive. The Orlando’s well proven set up utilizes McPherson struts for the front suspension and compound crank axle for the rear.

Emulating the successful Chevrolet Cruze, the Orlando’s chassis has been tuned to provide the ideal compromise between ride comfort and agility. McPherson struts used for the front suspension use hydraulic bushings which are often found in more expensive vehicles, and provide increased ride isolation for passengers and controlled absorption of variable road surfaces.

The advanced compound crank (torsion beam) system at the rear is used as it offers the perfect compromise between suspension control combined with savings in weight and space. A torsion beam system can also be easily tuned to accommodate the different vehicle and engine weights.

Orlando’s chassis and body structure have also been engineered with high reserves of safety as a key consideration. Sixteen-inch ventilated front disc brakes are fitted across the range, with sixteen-inch solid discs at the rear and with electronic ABS acting on all wheels. All chassis also benefit from electronic brake force distribution, a system which governs the amount of braking at each wheel to ensure the shortest stopping distances, traction control to keep in check unintended driver exuberance and for when road conditions are wet or slippery, electronic stability control and hydraulic brake assist.

Full production of the Chevrolet Orlando started in October at General Motor’s South Korea manufacturing facilities and the car is scheduled to go on sale across Europe in early 2011.

Chevrolet displayed the all-new 2012 Sonic at the North American International Auto Show. Its youthful, aggressive design is backed by turbocharged performance and agile ride and handling, combining to deliver an efficient, fun-to-drive small car.

The Sonic is offered in two body styles: a stylish four-door sedan and a sporty five-door. Each delivers class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space. A variety of connectivity features enhance the driving experience.

“The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known for,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Its combination of great design, fun driving experience and the latest connectivity features create a serious competitor with a fun spirit.”

Production of the Sonic begins later in 2011 at the General Motors Orion Assembly Center in Michigan, which received a $545-million investment in upgrades and retooling, and will help restore approximately 1,000 jobs in the metropolitan Detroit area.

“Chevrolet is the only company building a small car in the United States,” said Perry. “We believe the Sonic will bring substance to the segment, with progressive styling, performance and value that will change perceptions of what a small car can be in America.”

Not only is it the perfect combination of bold and new, but Chevrolet’s new Orlando MPV is also ‘spec’-tacular value for money.

Prices for the newcomer have just been announced, and from £16,395 they represent the best value in the class in terms of standard equipment.

When the car arrives in UK dealerships in the Spring, three trim levels and three engines will be available, including two diesel options.

The entry level Orlando is badged LS, and is anything but basic. Standard equipment includes ESC, air conditioning, follow-me-home headlights, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, six airbags, three 12v power sockets, tinted windows and an adjustable steering wheel.

It also includes two clever innovations – a supplementary rear-view mirror allowing both driver and passenger to see all of the car’s occupants, and an extremely clever hidden cubby compartment behind the stereo facia; the perfect place to conceal MP3s, phones and iPods away from prying eyes.

The LS is available with the 141PS 1.8-litre petrol engine, or a new 130PS 2.0-litre diesel unit, the latter of which also comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.

LT models come loaded with even more kit. As well as the standard LS equipment, they get rear parking distance sensors, a USB port, 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control, a chrome-effect tailgate handle, driver’s armrest, leather-covered steering wheel, front fog lights, electric rear windows and an upgraded sound system with steering wheel audio controls.

In addition, the LT can be specified with the most powerful Orlando engine, a 163PS 2.0-litre diesel with six-speed manual transmission, or a six-speed auto as an option.

The range-topping LTZ models, which are also offered with a choice of all three engine options, come with an astonishing amount of on-board goodies.

These include distinctive 17-inch alloys, automatic cruise control, an electro-chromatic rear view mirror, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, blue ambient panel lighting, a gloss black centre console, power-folding door mirrors, a rear cargo net and chrome-effect body detailing.

Buyers of diesel-engined LTZ models can also specify an optional Executive Pack, priced at £2,000. This adds full leather upholstery, heated front seats, satellite navigation and smart 18-inch alloy wheels.

Orlando also benefits from best-in-class insurance group ratings – no other seven-seat MPV can match the 1.8-litre petrol model’s 10E T1 classification, while the 130PS 2.0-litre diesel is in class 14E T1 and the 163PS 2.0-litre diesel is the 16E T1 bracket.

A full list of prices and specifications appears below (all prices include 20 per cent VAT, due from January 1, 2011):

During the 12-city Volt Unplugged Tour, 6,348 consumers climbed in and took the electric vehicle with extended-range capability for a spin.

In shopping mall parking lots, on corporate campuses and on city streets, praise for the driving experience was nearly unanimous.

“I love the smoothness of the ride,” said Seth Long, among the first to drive the Volt during the tour’s first stop in Seattle. “I love the fact that I’m not spending money on gas. I can fit my wife and kids in it very easily and take it on a road trip.”

The Volt Unplugged tour covered 4,124 miles and visited more than a dozen cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, where the Volt goes on sale next month, and several markets it will reach in the next 12 to 18 months. A common refrain from test drive participants in non-launch cities was a lament that they have to wait for the Volt to go on sale.

Chevy will sell about 10,000 Volts through the end of 2011 with 45,000 planned for 2012.

The Volt’s presence on streets where it had not been seen was sometimes greeted with expressions of thumbs up. Some fumbled to snap photos with camera phones. Several people drove hours from their homes after signing up online to participate at prearranged drive locations.

“It is very well sorted out,” said Norman Howell, a professional test pilot who traveled 70 miles from Lake Stevens to Tacoma, Wash., to drive the Volt. “At its stage in progress, it is very, very mature in all aspects of vehicle dynamics and driver interface, and I’m very impressed.”

Volt Unplugged consisted of more than 70 drive events in conjunction with electric vehicle proponents and associations, utilities, corporations, universities, and local conferences, as well as with tour partners and Best Buy and Marriott, where overnight recharging was more readily available in some locations than others.

Asked where to plug in the car at a Marriot Courtyard in the Lake Union area of Seattle, an assistant manager looked puzzled before responding. “I’ve worked here for five years and I’ve never had that question before.”

Consumers in each market had an opportunity to experience the Volt and meet some of the people behind the vehicle’s development – engineers, designers and others.

Drivers throughout the tour shared their Volt drive impressions on the Driver Scrapbook found on ChevroletVoltAge.com.

“The car is amazing. It’s very quiet, which is fantastic,” said Lindsey Flood from New York City. “It works so well and is so high-tech inside. I loved the keyless entry and how the engineer inside the car with me was able to tell me so much about how the fuel works and the plug-in feature. I’m excited for it to come out.”

Said Steven Greer, who drove the Volt in San Antonio: “You guys have a home run on your hands. The feeling that is indescribable is the instantaneous torque. It has seamless acceleration. It’s incredible. I don’t think people appreciate how fast you guys did this and how well you’ve done it.”

On a fully charged battery and tank of gas, the Volt has a driving range of hundreds of miles. Because the Volt uses gasoline to create its own electricity in extended-range mode driving, long trips are possible. The Volt is powered only from electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery for 25 to 50 miles, after which a gasoline engine-generator seamlessly engages to extend the driving range.

“The driver testimonials illustrate the diverse offerings of the Volt with comments on its unique extended-range capability, its styling, and its performance,” said John Hughes, Chevrolet Volt marketing manager. “We were excited to see the enthusiastic response to the Volt we received from everyone who drove it.”

There’s no question that the Orlando will offer a refreshing alternative to many of the family vans currently on the market. The distinctly recognizable Chevrolet face is complemented by a profile characterized by the low swept roofline and the muscular, protruding wheel-arches, housing 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels. The wheel arches enhance a ‘body in, wheel out’ appearance while at the same time ensuring Orlando keeps its agile, sporting stance.

The interior seating is referred to as ‘theater-style’ because in spite of the sweeping roof-line, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third rows which allow the Orlando’s occupants to get an even better view both forwards and to the side and without compromising head-room. In fact headroom in the third row of seats in the Orlando is superior to a number of competitor MPVs.

Numerous seating configurations are possible with either second or third rows folded independently or together to make a completely flat load area. The second seat row also has a tumble-fold facility for both the left and right-hand outer seats to allow easy access for passengers into and out of the third row.

And when the time comes to shifting large loads of cargo, Orlando’s load area is one of the most voluminous in the monocab class with 1,499 liters available when both rows of seats are folded (856 liters below window line).

However, perhaps the most ingenious is a storage area hidden behind the front fascia of the audio and within easy reach of the both the driver and passenger. Seen originally on the Orlando concept car, designers have been able to integrate a usefully large area which is revealed by flipping up the face of the audio, and large enough for such items as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets. Within the space itself there is also a standard auxiliary jack and optional USB port for MP3 or iPod connectivity, depending on the trim level.

Under the hood there is a choice of three of Chevrolet’s fuel efficient engines, one gasoline and two diesels. All engines are transversely mounted 4-cylinder units with double overhead camshafts, 16 valves and either multi-point fuel injection, or in the case of the diesels, common rail technology. All the engines have a cast-iron cylinder block and alloy head.

The one gasoline engine available at launch is a 1.8 liter which produces 141 hp at 6200rpm and 176Nm of torque at 3800rpm. Maximum speed for this version is 185kph. Emissions and fuel economy from the 1.8 gasoline are competitive with emissions at 172g/km and consumption at 7.3 liters/100km.

The two diesel engines are of the same displacement but tuned to give different power outputs and drive characteristics. The heart of both engines is a 2.0-liter with 4 valves per cylinder and common rail injection fuel system. However, the more powerful of the two produces 163 hp at 3800rpm and offers 360Nm of torque at 2000rpm. The second output version has 130 hp and 315Nm at the same engine speeds.

Maximum speed of the Orlando for the diesel engine with 130 hp is 180kph and with 163 hp is 195kph. Emissions and fuel economy are at 159g/km and 6 liters/100km, respectively, for both.

Being based off Chevrolet’s successful and award winning Cruze sedan, already proven to offer excellent ride and handling, Orlando drivers are assured of a safe, yet involving and rewarding drive.

This double success, the first of Chevrolet and GM in a FIA-sanctioned world championship, seals a perfect finale to the outstanding campaign of the Cruze throughout the season.

The championships were conquered with bravura, as Rob Huff and Yvan Muller took a double win in Race 1, after a faultless flag-to-flag performance. In Race 2, the Chevrolet duo had to fight hard to pass Farfus, finishing 3rd and 4th, which means that Chevrolet has been on the podium in 21 of the 22 races this year. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Huff to take the runner-up position in the championship, as he finished tied in points with Tarquini, declared vice-champion only on number of wins. Alain Menu had a more difficult week-end but showed again his tremendous team spirit and personal bravery, having to cope with the sad news of his dad’s death. The Swiss finished Race 1 in 7th position, after a contact with the wall in lap 1, but could not take advantage from the first row position in Race 2, as a mechanical problem got him stuck on the grid.

As “We are the Champions!” was being sung in the Chevrolet garage after the race, amid accolades, toasts and some tears, the RML team was preparing for a long night of well-deserved celebrations. Once back in Europe, work will resume, with a new challenge in sight: getting the new Cruze 1.6 turbo as competitive as the current race car in 2011.

The iconic droptop goes into production in January and will reach European markets, including the UK, later in 2011. It includes an enhanced body structure and well-tailored top mechanism – a combination designed to deliver sports coupe-like driving fun and precise quality.

“The launch of the new convertible opens Camaro design and performance to a new set of potential customers,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, at the cars unveil at the LA Auto Show. “The 21st century revival of Camaro is tremendously popular, so it’s a natural to now expand and elevate the product range in new directions.”

The convertible will be offered in similar model configurations as the Camaro coupe. For Europe, that means a 6.2-litre V-8 engine producing 426 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.

Camaro is now the best-selling Coupe in its segment in the US market, and its popularity is backed up by the fact that the right to purchase one of the first convertibles was recently sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction for $205,000, with all proceeds donated to charity. The 2011 Neiman Marcus Edition Camaro convertibles, a group of 100 exclusive cars with custom-designed elements and priced at $75,000 each, sold out in only three minutes.

The Camaro convertible delivers great refinement, along with uncompromising, coupe-like driving dynamics. Its enhanced body structure helps prevent cowl or steering wheel shake, for a strong, confident feel in all driving conditions. The top has a smooth, tailored fit, with acoustical foam in the headliner that helps deliver a quiet ride with the top up.

Strong structure

The Camaro’s architecture was designed to accommodate a convertible model, which means customers enjoy the fun of top-down cruising with coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to eliminate common convertible maladies of cowl and steering wheel shake. They include:

A tower-to-tower brace under the hood

A transmission support reinforcement brace

Underbody tunnel brace

Front and rear underbody “V” braces.

“Our goal in development was to make the convertible match the coupe as closely as possible in ride quality, handling and overall performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.

A telling example of the Camaro convertible’s strength is evidenced in its suspension tuning – specifically, the lack of changes between the convertible and coupe models.

“To compensate for the reduced structure of an open car, engineers often will make the suspension softer, making the convertible a boulevard cruiser,” said Oppenheiser. “Instead, we took the more difficult, but better path of bolstering structure rather than softening the suspension. We didn’t change a strut, bushing or spring rate from the Camaro coupe.”

The result is a convertible that preserves nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro coupe.

Additional safety structural reinforcements are designed to improve noise and vibration characteristics, while also contributing to the elimination of cowl/steering wheel shake. They include a hydrofromed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.

The structural changes to the Camaro convertible body give it superior bending and torsional stiffness than its closest competitor, and better torsional stiffness than the BMW 3-Series convertible.

Exceptional top refinement

At the outset, designers and engineers sought to eliminate the common appearance of convertible top support ribs and they succeeded, using composite knuckles rather than aluminium ones, as well as extending the top material below the belt line and revising the top’s stitch lines. The result is a top that has a smooth, taut and carefully tailored appearance that also retains the sleek roofline of the coupe.

The power-folding top retracts in about 20 seconds. It is built in partnership with the same manufacturer as the Corvette convertible top, and operates in a similar manner. That means it folds in a simple “Z” pattern and latches with a single, convenient handle located at the center of the windshield header. Other convertible models in this segment still offer convertible tops with dual latches, forcing drivers into two-hand operations reaching across the car.

Once the latch is turned to the open position, the push of a single button lowers the windows and activates the top. The car doesn’t have to be parked for the top to be activated, allowing for spur-of-the-moment lowering while stopped at a stoplight.

The top is made of thick, durable canvas and it features acoustical headliner material that provides a quiet, coupe-like ride when the top is up. It also incorporates a glass rear window and rear window defogger.

A folding, one-piece tonneau cover is standard on 2LT and 2SS models and optional on 1LT/1SS. It covers the folded top for a finished appearance. An accessory windscreen is available from Chevrolet dealers. It installs behind the front seats to limit wind buffeting when driving with the top down.

Based on the already impressive Chevy Ute SS, (sold as the Pontiac G8 in the US and the Holden Ute SS in Australia) the 535bhp 590lb.ft 6-litre supercharged V8 SuperUte is a pick-up with supercar credentials offering 4.5-second 0-100km/h acceleration, dramatic overtaking ability and elasticity. SuperUte is also more economical and greener than standard while still remaining docile, gentle and easy to drive.

Powered by a supercharged V8 similar to that found in the Corvette ZR1, SuperUte clearly is a supercar – 0-60mph acceleration of an automatic version improves from the standard Ute’s already handy 6 seconds to 4.4 seconds, while 0-100mph flashes by in 9.9 seconds – almost four seconds faster than standard.

SuperUte reaches 125mph in 15.5 seconds – that’s over five seconds quicker than stock, boasts a quarter-mile time of 12.7 seconds at 113mph and runs the standing kilometre in 22.8 seconds at 150mph while top speed is up 25mph to 175 mph.

SuperUte is not just all speed and power – improvements extend to bigger race-specification front disc brakes and callipers, while subtle yet effective suspension tweaks will see the Ute’s already impressive handling, road holding and dynamic ability also improve without undue compromise to ride and comfort.

The TractionBar is unique SuperUte device that Lupini applies to enable the pick-up to dip well below the five-second 0-60mph-acceleration bracket.

Another vital LupiniPower aspect is the company’s standard Warranty & Service Plan in its home market to ensure customer peace of mind normally lost when factory plans are voided by such aftermarket modifications. SuperUte enjoys a 5 -year Unlimited LupiniPlan Performance Warranty in South Africa.

The Lupini SuperUte comes with a striking staggered 20” wheel & tyre set-up with 8.5J front and 10J wide rear alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza RE050 ultra-high performance tyres, while option boxes available to be ticked include full Bilstein suspension and a limited-slip differential for the serious track day fan. Only a limited number of SuperUtes will be offered to guarantee exclusivity.

LupiniPower’s Chevrolet SuperUte sells for US $91 500 (Euro 63 000, GBP58000) for a complete new vehicle in South Africa. An identical LupiniPower SuperLumina option is available on the Chevrolet Lumina SS sedan.

Visit www.lupini.co.za for more SuperUte information or contact info@lupini.co.za for more on export opportunities on the vehicles

The new Captiva SUV will be seen for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, sporting a new front end design, a range of enhancements to the interior and new engines and transmissions. Captiva will be one of four Chevrolet world premieres.

Captiva is Chevrolet’s full-blooded sports SUV with confident and dynamic new styling and an active on-demand all-wheel drive system that distributes power as needed.

At the same time the new Captiva retains the advantages of its adaptable, theatre-style seating in three rows which comfortably accommodates up to seven passengers.

The Captiva has won many friends for its exterior design since its launch in 2006, and with the new model it will get even better. A number of features are immediately noticeable when viewing the new Captiva from the front, adding up to its athletic stance: the re-shaped and sharply sculptured bonnet, a new larger grille and the Chevrolet ‘bow-tie’ sited proudly in the middle, prism style headlamps and integrated LED turn signals on the outside rearview mirrors.

Moving round to the front wings, the side air-vents now take on a more angular shape to emphasize the new Captiva’s sporting intent, while from the A-pillars back the Captiva retains its handsome profile, characterized by a sleek, rising shoulder line.

Setting the new Captiva’s body off perfectly are the new exterior color palette and the accentuated wheel arches which will accommodate wheel sizes of 17 to 19 inches.

It’s under the Captiva’s bonnet that the most significant changes are taking place, with no less than three new powerful engines that will come as standard with a new manual or automatic six-speed transmission for a powerful, smooth drive. The new engine line-up, which is comprised of one petrol engine (2.4L) and two turbo-diesel variants (2.2L), incorporates a host of advanced technologies aimed at delivering an optimal balance of performance and fuel economy.

The new 2.2 litre common rail turbo-charged diesel units will be available with either 163 or 184 hp outputs, while the 2.4-litre dual overhead cam gasoline unit with variable valve timing, is rated at 171 hp.

The new Captiva’s chassis has been re-tuned to further enhance vehicle dynamics, improving cornering, roll characteristics and ride feel. With Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Braking Assist System (BAS) standard, as well as front-, side- and curtain airbags, the Captiva provides a high level of safety.

Climb aboard the new Captiva and driver and passengers will still be welcomed by that airy and spacious interior, with storage space that is among best in class and with the option of either 5 or 7 seats.

The Captiva’s upgraded interior now features an array of new finishes and textures including all-new seat fabrics and interior décor appointments to give the car a more up-market feel and look. Designers have put to good use some of the elements featured on other new Chevrolet models, such as the ice-blue back lighting and the ‘wrap-round’ design of the front fascia which flows into the front driver’s and passenger doors creating the dual-cockpit look.

The new Captiva features Hill Start Assist, eliminating “roll-back” on hills and an electric park brake that opens up space for further storage in the center console, including two 1-liter cup holders.

The new Captiva’s audio system includes Aux-in, USB-port and Bluetooth connectivity. Passengers will enjoy their audio experience all the more thanks to improved acoustic engineering resulting in reduced road, wind and engine noise. Captiva can be ordered with a touch-screen navigation system with rear view camera for parking assistance.

Captiva offers a lot of SUV for its price: powerful, yet efficient engines, all-wheel drive capabilities, roominess and versatility for up to seven passengers. Its launch in Europe is scheduled for spring 2011.

There is no shortage of world firsts for Chevrolet at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show, and joining the Orlando MPV and Cruze hatchback show car will be the eagerly awaited Chevrolet Aveo 5-door, which like the Orlando makes its world production debut.

The Aveo RS show car was displayed at the Detroit and Geneva motor shows earlier in 2010, and with the final production-ready model, Chevrolet has a car that looks every bit as good as the earlier concept.

Entering the highly competitive global small car segment, striking design elements of the new Chevrolet Aveo include the aggressive looking front with its exposed twin-headlamps and dual port grille, compact taut body panels with a rising shoulder line and short rear overhangs, the ‘hidden’ rear door handles which now feature in the c-pillar and a ‘body in, wheels out’ profile which is now very much part of the new Chevrolet design language.

Reminiscent of the recently introduced Spark, the new Aveo is unquestionably a car that will appeal to younger customers with its sporty hot-hatch look. With is practicality and good interior space Chevrolet also expects the new Aveo to appeal to families.

The new Chevrolet Aveo has benefited from an extensive development programme, resulting in a small car that will meet European drivers’ tastes both in terms of design and dynamics. Final specifications of the new Aveo will be carefully tailored to each European market.

Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe says: “It’s just such an exciting time to be at Chevrolet; not only do we have new entries into the MPV and compact classes, in Aveo we have a car which is ready to compete against the best in the small car segment, which is also Europe’s largest segment.”

The new Aveo is longer and wider than the current model, giving it a spacious interior and cargo volume that is among best in its class. The interior design perhaps holds even more surprises than the outside, in particular the motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster which features an analogue tachometer combined with a digital speedo and warning lights.

Up-market blue backlighting features on the centre console while the whole of the front cabin is enveloped in a wrap-round fascia. This can be colour-coded and flows from the dash into both the driver’s and front passenger’s doors. Aveo customers will appreciate the quality materials used in the interior as well as multiple storage spaces in the center stack and the modern audio system with USB, aux-in and Bluetooth functionality.

Reflecting the little Chevrolet’s sporty personality, Aveo has been engineered to provide involving handling, a characteristic which stems partly from its tight body frame integral (BFI) structure where high torsional rigidity has been achieved – among the stiffest in the small car segment.

The new Aveo’s chassis has been fine tuned to satisfy European tastes with a ride and handling ratio that combines comfort with responsiveness. Electronic stability control (ESC) and ABS brakes will be standard.

A comprehensive range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines will be available in the new Chevrolet Aveo, incorporating the latest technologies such as variable valve timing, double continuous variable cam phasing and common rail fuel injection for the diesels.

The petrol engine range includes a 1.2 litre version (at 86 hp) and a 1.4 litre unit (100 hp). For the first time, Aveo will be offered with two versions of a 1.3 litre diesel engine (at 75 hp and at 95 hp) featuring Start/Stop technology.

Chevrolet’s first 6-speed automatic transmission on a small car will feature on the Aveo 1.4 as an option in most markets; manual transmissions are of 5 or 6 speed depending on engine choice.

The story of the Chevrolet Cruze goes from strength to strength with the latest chapter heralding the launch of a new 5-door hatchback model, further evidence of Chevrolet’s intention to bring value for money to all mainstream segments in Europe.

A show car version of Chevrolet’s compact contender will be seen for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, on September 30. It will be one of four world Chevrolet premieres at the show.

With the introduction of the new Cruze hatchback, customers have an alternative body style to the traditional saloon and Chevrolet has raised the bar again with a vehicle that brings new levels of value against some of the more established competition.

According to Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, the potential for meeting further customer demand is significant. “Cruze is turning out to be a real success story. We are selling it in 70 countries around the world and it has recently surpassed the Aveo as our top selling passenger car nameplate globally.

“Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets. The total compact segment in Europe represents around 4.8 million units which is over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume. We therefore expect to see increased business in a number of regions, while sending out a signal that Chevrolet is now a serious mainstream player in Europe.”

Since its launch in the spring 2009, the Cruze saloon has been warmly welcomed by markets all over the world, greeted as a step change for the brand with customers attracted to its coupe style, build quality, 5-star NCAP rating and driving dynamics. It was also elected the AUTOBEST car of 2010 by a jury of leading auto writers in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Chevrolet Cruze is a car particularly well suited to European driver tastes, a fact borne out by sales success across many of markets. So far in 2010, Cruze tops the compact saloon sales charts in many of the larger European markets including Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the U.K., where it is exceeding forecasted sales.

Outside of Europe, Cruze’s sales momentum is equally evident. In China alone, Chevrolet has sold nearly 90,000 Cruze since the start of the year, while the saloon is also selling well in Russia, parts of South America, and in India and other emerging markets.

Hatchback design

With its attractive sweeping coupe roofline and short overhangs at both the front and rear, the new Cruze hatchback has the same dynamic ‘stance’ as the saloon and will be instantly recognizable. It will benefit too from the same taut body ‘feel’ on the road, being built using the new body-frame integral system (BFI) which is complemented by the final tuning to chassis components. The BFI system results in high levels of stability and solidity.

Cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 litres and will feature 60/40 split rear seating.

<img src="http://motoring-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/61511-Orlando_01.jpg" alt="" title="Chevrolet Orlando" width="350" height="221" align="left" size-full wp-image-4673" />Chevrolet’s first entrant into the European MPV segment, the Orlando, will be one of the star attractions at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris on September 30, when the full production model makes its world debut. It will be one of four Chevrolet world premieres at the show.

Based on the show car concept first seen at Paris in 2008, the Chevrolet Orlando is a true family car for the times, combining 7-seater practicality and interior flexibility with striking crossover style design.

Chevrolet’s new compact MPV eschews the bland designs sometimes seen in the segment, and instead adopts a bolder look with its low roofline and crossover inspired silhouette, while retaining the distinctive and recognizable Chevrolet ‘face’ depicted by the split radiator grille and bow-tie badge.

The Orlando’s low swept roof line is complemented by the muscular, protruding wheel-arches, housing 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels.

The new Orlando MPV has a key role to play in Chevrolet’s continued product offensive in Europe, as Wayne Brannon, president and managing director for Chevrolet Europe explains. “The new Orlando MPV kicks off an ambitious seven-product launch program over the next 15 months.

“We’re confident the Orlando not only brings great value for money to the MPV class but also something fresh – function with attitude if you like – and the opportunity for us to continue building our volume across Europe. I believe it will also bring more new customers to the Chevrolet brand.”

While the exterior of the new Orlando is sure to draw plenty of attention, the interior too features the latest design cues from Chevrolet such as the Corvette inspired dual cockpit and ambient blue backlighting to the centre console. However, it’s the theatre style seating arrangement of the Orlando’s three rows of seats, the generous load area and the numerous storage solutions that will also grab the attention of family motorists.

In spite of the sweeping roof-line, the designers have succeeded in raising the second and third row of seats, which means Orlando’s occupants get an even better view both forwards and to the side. And with a wide variety of seating configurations possible, the Orlando can be quickly transformed into one of the most voluminous MPVs in the class when it comes to carrying loads.

Any hard working family car needs plenty of interior storage space for all the ‘paraphernalia’ that builds up. Like the Orlando concept car, the Orlando obliges with a range of compartments of different shapes and sizes situated in the center console, front and rear doors, rear cargo area and even the roof.

However, perhaps the most ingenious is a storage area hidden behind front fascia of the audio, and within easy reach of the both the driver and passenger. Seen originally on the Orlando concept car, the designers have been able to integrate a usefully large area which is revealed by flipping up the face of the audio, and large enough for such items as an MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets. Within the space itself, there is also a USB port – ideal for re-charging the MP3 or iPod when on the move.

The Orlando is based on Chevrolet’s successful and award winning Cruze saloon, already proven to offer excellent ride and handling. Under the hood there will be a choice of three of Chevrolet’s latest fuel efficient engines: one petrol engine will be available, a 1.8 litre with power output of 141 hp and two diesel units, the latest version of Chevrolet’s 2.0 litre engine with outputs of 131hp (low output) or 163 hp (high output).

Customers will also be able to choose from four trim levels in the UK with standard equipment on all cars including electronic stability control, six air-bags, air conditioning and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.

Full production of the Chevrolet Orlando starts in October with the car going on sale across Europe in early 2011.

Building on Chevrolet’s iconic US Heritage, the retro-styled Camaro has been on sale in the USA since 2009, and has already seen sales in excess of 200,000 as American retailers cleared their waiting lists.

And very soon, those waiting to get their hands on an official Camaro in the UK will have reason to celebrate – the car will go on sale as an official Chevrolet, complete with full manufacturer warranty, during the first half of 2011.

With looks that draw heavily from the styling of the legendary 1967-69 Camaro – immortalised in song in Bruce Springsteen’s Racing in the Street and on the silver screen in both 2 Fast 2 Furious and Transformers – the car is a full four-seater, with an interior that also takes significant cues from the look of its forebears.

The Camaro will be available only in top level V8 trim – the 6.2-litre 426bhp powerplant is as much of a legend as the Camaro itself. It promises a top speed electronically limited to 155mph, and a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds, coupled to a dynamic chassis that, thankfully, owes little to the layout of more traditional muscle cars.

Final specification details and prices will be announced closer to the car’s 2011 launch. In the meantime, potential customers can register their interest at www.chevrolet.co.uk

For fleet managers seeking to offer executives a high spec SUV option at a very competitive price, the new Captiva LTZ model from Chevrolet offers the answer.

Standard equipment in this roomy seven-seater includes full leather trim with heated front seats, electronic climate control, cruise control, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, automatic headlamp control, rain sensor wipers, and electrically-folding mirrors.

The LTZ has classic Chevy styling enhanced by bold 18-inch alloys and unique rear light clusters. Privacy glass as standard adds a cool touch in more ways than one by both increasing the aesthetic appeal of the LTZ and helping to keep down the internal temperature. Considerably flexibility comes from the 60/40 split, reclining flat-folding rear passenger seat.

Safety features abound, including ABS, ESC and traction control and there are both front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus roof curtain airbags. The Isofix child seat restraint system is fitted along with child locks on the rear doors. These features result in a four-star crash rating for the Captiva LTZ.

In addition to audible distance sensors to assist parking, the LTZ also has a reversing camera as standard. This gives a view lower than that which the driver would get through the back window, not only making parking easier but also reducing the risk of minor scrapes and protecting pedestrians.

The camera operates through the 7-inch satellite navigation unit display screen. This uses simple touch screen technology to allow fast and safe access to the many features of the unit, which range from Points of Interest to a postcode search facility. USB and SD card inputs provide additional sources for music and video clips.

Both manual and automatic options are powered by the 150PS 2.0 litre VCDi diesel engine. Combined fuel economy figures are 38.2 mpg for the manual and 32.8 mpg for the automatic. The manual emits 197 g/km of CO2 and the automatic 225 g/km. A manual Captiva LTZ with no options would attract a 31% BIK rate for tax year 10/11, which for a 40% tax payer represents £3,326.

Keith Jones, Chevrolet National Fleet Sales Manager, believes that the new Captiva LTZ represents exceptional value for money to fleet operators and is a worthy consideration for today’s demanding User Chooser driver.

“This is a high quality SUV that matches more premium marques on specification, comfort, ride and handling. The initial surge in demand suggests that we have absolutely the right product offer and that Captiva LTZ is a car that fleet managers and company car drivers want to see on their choice lists from which to choose.
