In addition to Citroën Racing’s official participation in WRC, where it has won five FIA World Championship Constructors’ titles, Citroën Racing has always offered products designed for customers.

The champion team has now furthered this rich tradition with Citroën DS3 R3, a model set to make its rallying debut at the end of 2010. Versatile, high performance and yet affordably-priced, DS3 R3 is set to become the new leader in its category.

Based on the FIA’s new Group R3T regulations, DS3 R3 features the same structural design and appearance as the production model, with the production steel body shell reinforced by a welded, multi-point roll cage, improving the resilience of the chassis and safety for the driver pairing.

Under the bonnet lies a four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP (high pressure turbo) engine, which has been developed using the PSA production engine.  Specific racing parts (air box, camshaft, pistons, connecting rods, exhaust and turbo systems, electronic unit, etc.) have been deployed to boost the car’s power to 210bhp.  In addition to its overall power, special attention has been given to increasing the engine’s torque to improve traction, one of the key factors in delivering efficient driving performance.  With 350Nm, the DS3 R3 engine offers unrivalled flexibility on the road.

DS3 R3 has benefitted from the extensive expertise acquired by Citroën Racing through its involvement in the World Rally Championship.  As with the C4 WRC, the six-speed gearbox features semi-automatic sequential control, enabling gear changes to be made twice as quickly as with a manual gearbox, whilst also improving the reliability of the car’s powertrain.

The suspension system uses the very latest technologies and has been designed for all road surfaces, from rough gravel to smooth tarmac.  A wide variety of setup options are available, allowing DS3 R3 to be adapted to all driving styles.  Citroën Racing recommends the use of BFGoodrich tyres.

Built using production-derived components and specific racing parts, DS3 R3 is available at an affordable price and will be marketed by Citroën Racing in kit and ready-to-race versions.

CHASSIS: CITROËN RACING, EXPERTS WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY

Citroën Racing has deployed its extensive expertise in passive safety and chassis rigidity on DS3 R3.  The standard monocoque chassis is lighter because it does not have the supports used on the production model.  It has been re-welded and fitted with a multi-point roll cage made of over 45 metres of steel tubing.  The industrially designed roll cage is pre-assembled outside the car, which means the welding is of a higher quality.  Various details of the chassis design, such as the harness cross-member and the door crossbars, help to improve safety for the driver pairing.  The monocoque chassis is delivered with all the brackets and mountings required to assemble the car, which reduces the construction time and cost.

In order to improve weight distribution, the battery and automatic fire extinguisher are positioned behind the seats. A steel skidplate protects the underside of the engine and also helps to lower the car’s centre of gravity.  The flexible, FIA-homologated fuel tank remains in its original position.

GROUND LINK SYSTEMS: ADAPTABLE AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION

DS3 R3’s efficiency on all road surfaces stems from the quality of its suspension system, designed to make full use of the Group R regulations.  At the front, the production sub-frame has been altered so that tubular wishbones can be fitted.  The axle is both lighter and stronger than on the production model.  Developed in conjunction with BOS, the shock absorbers boast several innovative features:

- The aluminium struts are lubricated in an oil bath, which improves the consistency and lifespan of the suspension.

- The lower, frontally-offset anchor point helps increase the travel and the guiding length of the shock absorber.

In order to adapt its road handling to all driving styles, DS3 R3 offers a variety of setup options: three track shock absorbers (low and high-speed compression and rebound, adjustable hydraulic bump stop), camber and toe (front and rear), track width and castor (front).

At the rear, the production cross-member has been reinforced and altered to make it easier to fit the anti-roll bar.  The removable rear wheel hubs allow the camber and toe settings to be adjusted independently.

The braking system features a ‘pedal box’ assembly with two master cylinders.  The discs are held in place by four-calliper pistons at the front and two-calliper pistons at the rear.  The handbrake is hydraulic.

ENGINE: A 1.6-LITRE HIGH-PRESSURE TURBO WITH INCREDIBLE TORQUE

For the first time ever, Citroën Racing has produced a customer-racing product fitted with a turbocharged engine.  The experience acquired by the brand in WRC for almost ten years has been put to good use in its design.  The 1.6-litre THP (high pressure turbo) engine is very closely related to the production model used throughout the PSA Group.  Fitted with a regulation-compliant 29mm turbo flange, it develops 210bhp of power and generates a torque of 350Nm (with commercially available fuel).  This second value improves traction and delivers excellent versatility at all engine speeds.

In accordance with the regulations, many parts have been taken or derived from the production model.  For example, the intake and exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, injectors and injection pumps are identical to those used on production models.  The air filter, camshaft, pistons, connecting rods and engine flywheel are, however, specific racing parts.  To avoid oil surges during long corners and to increase ground clearance, the oil sump has been altered and fitted with a composite partition. The exhaust and turbocharger system is also specific; the catalytic converter is similar to the one used on C4 WRC.  DS3 R3’s engine ECU also includes a data acquisition system that is able to check a large number of parameters.

GEARBOX: A MAJOR FIRST WITH SEMI-AUTOMATIC CONTROL

One of the main innovations on DS3 R3 concerns its gearbox.  For the first time, a customer-racing product has been fitted with a semi-automatic gearbox, which reduces the time spent changing gears and increases reliability.  The electronic management system only authorises gear changes when the engine parameters allow it.  Once again, the expertise developed by Citroën Racing in WRC enabled this cutting-edge technology to be adapted to DS3 R3.

Inside the cabin, the composite fibre steering wheel-mounted paddles are just as ergonomic as on C4 WRC: the driver flicks the paddle backwards to move up the gears and flicks it forwards to move down the gears.  The clutch pedal is still present, but is only used to drive off.  During subsequent gear changes, the clutch is automatically controlled.

Under the bonnet, the specific elements of the semi-automatic control (solenoid valves, actuators and pressure unit) have all been taken from the production model and adapted to the six-speed gearbox. The housing for the twin-disc clutch has been cast in aluminium, whilst the gearing casing has been cut from the block.

DEVELOPMENT: OVER 10,000KM OF TESTING

After twelve months spent in Citroën Racing’s design office, DS3 R3 made its first outing at the end of August 2009.  To check the sturdiness of the various components, initial testing was carried out on ‘rough gravel’ test tracks, typical of the road surfaces seen in Mediterranean rallies.  Development testing continued on tarmac, the ideal surface to test performance, and on flowing gravel roads.  In total, DS3 R3 covered over 10,000km in development testing, split evenly among the different types of road surfaces.

Several drivers took part in the tests.  They all had varying levels of experience, different preferences and driving styles, which meant that the engineers could accumulate data that will benefit future DS3 R3 owners.  All of the drivers agreed that the car was easy to drive and highlighted three strengths: the torque of the 1.6-litre engine, the semi-automatic gearbox and the suspension.  DS3 R3 offers impressive performance levels and looks set to become the new leader in its category in rallying.

Citroën has revealed the interior of the DS High Rider concept – which was originally showcased at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.  In line with the car’s distinctive exterior styling, DS High Rider’s cockpit exudes strength, dynamism and refinement, with the utmost care and precision applied to even the smallest details.  The ergonomic design of the controls, the quality of the carefully selected materials and the prestigious atmosphere on board convey status, elegance and the promise of luxurious comfort.

With a clear contrast between DS High Rider’s large panoramic windscreen and its dark-shaded roof lining, the cabin is an exclusive environment with an emphasis on sporting luxury – also evidenced by the extensive application of leather and chrome detailing.

The instrument panel, seats and door panels are all finished in a quality, full-grain leather with clearly defined over-stitching and a ‘bracelet’ design on the seats.  The DS initials are also subtly embossed into the leatherwork of the dashboard.

Completing the dynamic ambience of the interior, chrome detailing is used around the dials, steering wheel, air vents, gear stick and the arch that connects the instrument panel to the console.  Chrome ‘DS’ inserts also feature, positioned just below the headrests on each of the front seats.

Mirroring the golden tone of the DS High Rider’s bodywork, the interior door panels are trimmed with a graduated grey to gold shading that required the careful application of specific varnishes to achieve the gilded, metallic look.

DS High Rider’s technology can be glimpsed in the controls mounted on the sculpted steering wheel, the colour screen in the centre console and the ‘Hybrid’ badge just below the gear stick – which asserts the model’s ecologically sensitive drivetrain.

Citroën has revealed the spectacular new Metropolis – a sleek and muscular concept car that pays homage to China’s extraordinary development. Created by Citroën’s international design team – based in Shanghai since 2008 – Metropolis will be on show in the French Pavilion at the Shanghai World Fair from 1^st May to 31^st October, 2010.

Reflecting China’s avant-garde status, grandeur and vitality, the sleek limousine concept immerses itself in ‘Créative Technologie’, balancing environmental responsibility with luxurious comfort and driving pleasure.  Incorporating a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and Hydractive suspension, Metropolis produces CO₂ emissions of just 70g/km – approximately one fifth that of a conventional engine with equivalent performance.

Metropolis’ distinctive silhouette is a vision of creative and sophisticated luxury with an imposing stature (5.3m long, 2m wide & 1.4m high), reflecting the dynamism and ambition of China in the 21^st Century.  Powerful and engaging, Metropolis’ subtle ‘Pearl Silk’ body colour changes under different light conditions, revealing the model’s generous curves and ultra-honed detailing.

Metropolis blends taut lines with smooth surfaces, evidenced particularly at the front where the sculpted, incisive wings and kite-shaped grille merge with the harmonious contours of the bonnet.  The streamlined headlamps have an imperious and steely look, giving Metropolis a natural air of authority.   

At the rear, Metropolis carefully balances width and stability with flowing aerodynamic lines – incorporating an active spoiler – and signature Citroën design flourishes, such as a concave rear window.  Chrome touches around the side windows visually elongate the cabin, while ‘origami’ quarter-lights appear to float in the air – and also house a light source.

Metropolis’ powerful hybrid drivetrain utilises an optimised 2-litre V6 petrol engine and a 7-speed, dual-clutch electronic gearbox.  At low speeds, Metropolis runs in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mode, with its electric motor developing a continuous 55bhp (40kW), peaking at 95bhp (70kW).  At steady speeds on main roads and motorways, the petrol powerplant efficiently provides 272bhp (200kW) and 375Nm of torque.  When additional performance is required, such as during overtaking, the car uses both the electric motor and the combustion engine to deliver a maximum power output of 460bhp (345kW) and 430Nm of torque – equivalent to a 4-litre V8 petrol engine.  There’s also a four-wheel drive mode for when extra grip is needed.

Delivering a smooth and cosseting ride experience, Metropolis is specified with Citroën’s renowned Hydractive suspension, which dampens even the roughest of road surfaces and improves the car’s aerodynamic performance – further helping to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The 1.6HDi 110hp engine in Citroën’s C5 range has been re-homologated and now offers improved fuel efficiency, lower CO₂ emissions and free first year VED.

These improvements affect all trim levels of the Saloon and Tourer that are powered by the HDi 110hp unit. Fuel economy, over the combined cycle, has improved 6% to 56.5mpg, whilst CO₂ emissions have been slashed by 10g/km, from 140g to 130g.  The changes bring these C5 models into the new VED Band D, qualifying them for free road tax in the first year.  Company car drivers also stand to benefit, thanks to a 1-point reduction in BIK taxation rates – down to 18%.

Citroën’s C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso are now even more fuel and CO₂ efficient, thanks to the re-homologation of the 1.6 and 2.0HDi diesel engines in both models.

STYLING – INTERIOR

Inside, DS3 is beautifully appointed, sporty and driver-focused.  With low-slung, body-hugging seats, all commands and controls are neatly orientated towards the driver’s eye line.  The materials used in the carefully crafted interior have been specially selected to create a sophisticated and engaging cabin environment.

Delivering dynamic sporty looks or a more elegant, chic appearance – according to the preferences of the customer – there are 38 body and roof colour combinations to choose from, whilst door mirrors, wheels and wheel centre caps are available in a vast range of colours and combinations.  DS3 even offers a selection of ‘Spirits’, which include stylish roof graphics and matching carpet mats.

Inside, drivers can select from several colour cloths and premium leathers, with the dashboard available in up to six finishes including red, blue, white and even aluminium or carbon fibre effects. The gearstick knob is also offered in several different colours, which blend with satin-finished chrome.

Using a special DS3 configurator*, the DS3 personalisation process starts with customers selecting their preferred engine and trim level.  Depending on their initial choices, buyers are then presented with a choice of body colours, roof colours and roof graphics, as well as a host of other features to select from – such as chrome door mirrors and chrome rubbing strips; alloy wheels in different sizes, styles and colours; front bumper LEDs; upholstery materials; and the colour schemes of the dashboard and gear knob.

There are also equipment ‘signature’ packs to choose from, which include executive car features such as automatic headlamps, rear parking sensors, MyWay satellite navigation, Connecting Box (Bluetooth® with USB socket) and a front central armrest.

COMFORT & SPACE

DS3’s intelligent internal architecture means it is both compact and deceptively spacious – a characteristic Citroën design paradox.

At just 3.95m long, 1.72m wide and 1.46m or 1.48m high, DS3 is easily manoeuvrable and perfectly suited to the urban environment, but offers one of the most generous cabin environments with five seats, class-leading levels of occupant space and the biggest boot in the segment at 285-litres.

Thanks to a 60:40 split-folding rear bench, DS3 delivers modular versatility.  With an effortless mechanism, tumbling the rear seats forwards allows DS3 to transport luggage with dimensions of up to 1029 x 1156 x 620mm, with a maximum load volume of 980-litres – a big feat for a small car.

Full consideration has been given to the maximisation of interior space and the comfort of occupants.  The raised dashboard, with its recessed passenger footwell, creates additional front leg room, and the slender design of the front seats also frees up room for rear passengers.  Front and rear elbow room are best in the segment.

TECHNOLOGY

DS3 is offered with an impressive array of technology to keep occupants connected and in control.

For added comfort, safety and convenience on long distance journeys, cruise control with speed limiter is fitted as standard.  Automatic digital air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps and automatic rain-sensitive windscreen wipers can also be specified.

With a focus on environmentally conscious motoring, DS3 is fitted as standard with a Gear Efficiency Indicator that signals the optimum moment for the driver to change gear – encouraging more fuel efficient driving.

Citroën’s integrated satellite navigation and entertainment system, MyWay, offers European-wide guidance with live traffic updates all displayed on a full-colour 7” wide screen.  The standard specification CD player is MP3 compatible, and Bluetooth® allows hands-free telephony and wireless music streaming.

Auxiliary inputs are standard across the range, so MP3 players can always be connected to the car’s audio system.  For enhanced functionality, the ‘Connect Signature’ pack can be specified that adds a Connecting Box (Bluetooth® and USB connectivity) – with a socket on the central console that allows portable MP3 players to be controlled via the car’s audio system buttons. 

‘Connect Signature’ also incorporates the eight-speaker Hi-Fi system, with an additional speaker located in the middle of the upper dashboard and an amplified subwoofer in the boot.  This high quality sound system delivers a rich acoustic range with impressive depth for concert-like audio clarity. 

POWER & DYNAMICS

As comfortable on the open road as it is in built-up urban environments, DS3 boasts high-precision running gear with springing and damping developed to ‘read’ the road.  The result is responsive handling, minimal body roll and impressive poise in corners.

A small-diameter steering wheel and precisely calibrated power steering combine to give drivers a rewarding sense of feedback from the road.  A tight turning circle of just 10.2m or 10.4m – dependent on wheel size – means DS3 is easily manoeuvrable and perfectly suited to congested city streets.

A ‘part by part’ focus on limiting overall weight, optimising aerodynamics, and advancing the engine technology, ensures DS3 manages both fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions intelligently and efficiently.

Spirited and environmentally responsible, DS3’s range of five refined powerplants offer sporty credentials with Citroën’s new punchy THP 150hp engine and low CO₂ emissions of just 99g/km with the HDi 90hp diesel (DStyle 99g).

The three petrol powerplants – VTi 95hp, VTi 120hp & THP 150hp – were co-developed with BMW and are mated to either 5 or 6-speed manual gearboxes.  Over the combined cycle, CO₂ emissions range between 134 and 155g/km. 

The punchy performance of DS3’s top-of-the-range THP 150 engine offers a thrilling driving experience with a finely-tuned sporty feel.

The two highly efficient HDi diesels – 90hp & 110hp – are fitted with Citroën’s lauded DPFS (Diesel Particulate Filter System), and are also mated to either 5 or 6-speed manual gearboxes.  The 90hp version emits 104g/km of CO₂ and the 110hp produces just 118g/km.  Fuel economy is up to 70.6mpg over a combined cycle.  Benefiting from Citroën’s 12 years of experience in HDi innovation, DS3’s diesel engines are not only exceptionally frugal, but with high levels of responsive torque, are also fun and easy to drive.

A ‘green’ leader for the segment, the DStyle 99g is powered by Citroën’s renowned HDi 90hp engine, which – in this model – produces CO₂ emissions of just 99g/km and fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg.

SAFETY

A cocoon of safety and reassuring security, DS3 has been awarded a maximum five star Euro NCAP rating for occupant protection.  Providing capable handling in the most slippery of driving conditions, all models are equipped with ESP as standard, together with ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and EBA (Emergency Brake Assist).  DS3 features six airbags as standard, plus two Isofix child seat anchor points on the outside rear seats.  

TRIMS

DS3 features three trim levels – DSign, DStyle & DSport – with the DStyle 99g emitting just 99g/km of CO₂.

With DS3 style as standard, DSign models are far from being a basic proposition – not the case with many competitors’ entry-level models in this class.  The DSign trim features generous levels of standard equipment, which includes leather steering wheel, an MP3-compatible CD player with steering mounted controls, front fog lights, electric door mirrors, cruise control with speed limiter, ESP, six airbags, electric windows, remote central locking and Gear Efficiency Indicator.

At the heart of the range, DStyle models gain the striking front bumper mounted LEDs, air-conditioning, dark tinted rear windows, contrasting body and roof colours, roof coloured painted door mirrors with a chrome base, shiny-finished black dashboard and 16” diamond-tipped alloy wheels.

Combining luxury touches with sporty styling, DSport models feature chrome side rubbing strips, a rear spoiler with an integrated third brake light, a chrome double exhaust pipe, drilled aluminium pedals and 17” black diamond-tipped alloys. The ‘Connect Signature’ pack, which includes Bluetooth®, USB socket and the eight-speaker Hi-Fi system is standard specification – as is automatic digital air-conditioning.

The DStyle 99g is based on the DStyle trim.  Externally, the only difference is the addition of 16” steel wheels with wheel covers, in place of the DStyle’s 16” alloys.

PRICES

The DS3 range starts at £11,700 for the VTi 95hp DSign, rising to £15,900 for the top-of-the-range THP 150hp and the HDi 110hp DSport models.  A fully specified DSport THP 150hp with all available options costs just under £19,000.

As an example of the extensive personalisation that DS3 offers – and the resulting price – a mid-range VTi 120hp DStyle, specified with a metallic body colour, contrasting roof, chrome door mirrors and rubbing strips, 16” white diamond-tipped alloy wheels, LEDs, mistral cloth upholstery, a shiny black dashboard and the ‘Connect Signature’ pack (Bluetooth®, USB socket and the eight-speaker Hi-Fi), has an OTR price of £14,650 – just £950 more than an unpersonalised DStyle.

A high fashion version of DS3, decked out in the colours and brand image of YSL, transported fashion and film stars to the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective at the Petit Palais in Paris on Wednesday 10 March.

Organised by the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation, the exhibition features more than 300 pieces from the designer’s collection. Presented in their historical and cultural context, they create a panoramic vision of the illustrious fashion figure’s body of work, from his Dior debut in 1958 to retirement in 2002. The public also get a first look at the entire series of photographs of Yves Saint Laurent taken by Jean-Loup Sieff in 1971.

Embodying radical styling and distinctive luxury, DS3 is perfectly suited to the Yves Saint Laurent label, whose designer, with his elegant and anti-conformist aesthetic, revolutionised the female fashion world.

Citroën’s high performance coupé, the SM, is celebrating its 40th birthday.  

The luxury sports tourer, an alliance between Citroën and Maserati, was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 11th March 1970 – 40 years ago today.

Technically innovative, with a dynamic, yet supremely comfortable ride experience, the Citroën SM was highly regarded for its futuristic styling, prestigious quality, ‘magic-carpet’ suspension and outstanding performance – a unique combination of characteristics not available in any other car at the time.

Officially recognised as a truly exceptional vehicle in the early 1970’s, the SM placed third in the European Car of the Year Awards in 1971 – the winner was Citroën’s GS.  The SM also received the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award in the US in 1972.

Powered by a Maserati V6 engine, the SM was one of the fastest front-wheel drive cars of its day, with a top speed in excess of 220km/h (137mph).  A competitive performer in motorsport, the SM won its first race at the Morocco Rally in 1971.

Pioneering innovative technology, the SM introduced a new type of variable assist power-steering, which made it easier to manoeuvre at lower speeds and provided greater resistance at higher speeds for improved control and handling.

The car also featured hydro-pneumatic suspension with automatic height correction and six headlamps with automatic levelling.  Four power-assisted disc brakes, with independent front and rear circuits, automatically adjusted brake power according to vehicle load and weight distribution.

Renowned SM owners have included U.S. comedian Jay Leno, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, author Graham Greene and actor Lee Majors.  French Presidents from Georges Pompidou to Jacques Chirac used two specially modified 4-door convertible ‘présidentielle’ models, created by coach builder Henri Chapron.

The GQbyCITROËN is a concept car born through a unique partnership between the UK’s market-leading quality men’s monthly and a team of Citroën designers, collaborating to create the ultimate gentleman’s drive. This is the first time a British magazine has collaborated with a car company in this way.

Responding to a brief by GQ’s editor, Dylan Jones, Citroën’s team, headed by British designer – and the man responsible for the new Citroën DS3 – Mark Lloyd, took a new look at the GT theme and integrated it with a typical Citroën design approach bringing GQbyCITROËN from design outline to concept reality.

GQbyCITROËN combines classically sophisticated features and contemporary styling with a sculpted front end, rounded rear, strong body contours and sleek concave rear windscreen – a signature Citroën design.

The car’s cabin is accessed by rear coach doors and reveals a spacious, comfortable and futuristic cabin. Completing the car’s bespoke styling, the interior detailing and upholstery selections were provided by Patrick Grant, the Creative Director of prestigious Savile Row tailors, E.Tautz, who commented: “Savile Row is all about balance and Tautz’s simple military inspired interior is the perfect counterpoint to the Gallic flair of the exterior.”

Dylan Jones commented: “I wanted something practical, something cool, and something idiosyncratic – i.e. something surprising that didn’t just look like a concept car. The GQ car needed to have the ‘want’ factor, but it also needed to look, feel and ‘drive’ like the sort of car no sane man could choose to ignore. We think it looks very very special.”

Dynamic performance and environmental responsibility were also key requirements for the project. The GQbyCITROËN concept car is powered by a plug-in Hybrid with a 1,598cc, 4-cylinder direct injection petrol engine offering a sporty 0-60mph time of just 4.5seconds, an electronically limited top speed of 155mph and CO2 emissions of just 80g/km.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Designer of Citroën’s International Projects added: “Where this car works so well with GQ is that it fits with the current attitudes of conspicuous consumption. It is understated rather than in-your-face and sleek rather than too macho. With the skills of a Savile Row tailor on the car’s interior we have also achieved that bespoke, fitted feel, both inside and out.

“For me, the car that has always represented the pinnacle of automotive excellence and refinement is the GT – the Grand Tourer. It is not the all-out sports car, rather it is something gentlemanly, it has performance and it is for travelling, not racing. We wanted to create something that, like GQ, was aspirational, but also retained the classic automotive ideals. We didn’t want a car for the mass market. We wanted a car for GQ.’”

Citroën is unleashing a hot new DS3 at the Geneva Motor Show – the limited edition 200hp DS3 Racing.

Developed by Citroën Racing – the winning team behind five WRC manufacturer’s titles and six driver’s titles for Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena – DS3 Racing is a special edition with a 100% sporting pedigree.  Planned for the second half of 2010, the exclusive DS3 Racing will be limited to just 1000 production units.

With integrated carbon-trimmed components and specialist motorsports equipment, DS3 Racing’s tuned and turbo-charged 1.6-litre THP 150 engine develops 200hp – a power increase of almost 30% over the standard unit – with a torque increase of 15% from 240Nm to 275Nm.

To achieve the additional power output, from 156hp to 200hp, Citroën Racing’s engineers modified and optimised the powertrain components, tuned the performance of the turbo and adjusted the mapping of the engine control unit.  A special tail pipe and muffler were also added.

Allowing DS3 Racing to stick to the road, the car has undergone some significant sporting enhancements.  The steering has been made even more precise, with the control system modified for the new tyres.  The fitment of stiffer suspension springs, adapted front and rear shock absorbers (to handle the increased power), and the widening of the front and rear tracks by 30mm – plus lowering the car by 15mm – all dramatically change the driving dynamics.

These important developments reinforce both the stability and dynamic control of the car, and enhance the feedback between the road and the driver.

The braking system has also been up-rated to ensure control over the car’s additional horsepower.  The front wheels get 4-piston racing callipers and special disc-brakes – with drilled discs at the rear.  For enhanced control, the ESP has been adapted to complement the sportier handling, but can be disengaged according to the driver’s preference.

In addition to the distinctive, radical styling of DS3, the new Racing edition inherits Citroën Racing’s expertise in motorsport design to provide advanced technological and stylistic sporting prowess.

The preview model, to be presented at Geneva, is in a special livery and features sporty ‘DS3’, ‘Citroën Racing’ and chequered flag graphics on the roof, in front of the rear wheel arches, under the side mirrors and next to the fuel cap. 

Measuring 3.94m long, DS3 Racing’s dark grey body is tastefully contrasted with a vibrant, bright orange-coloured roof, side mirrors and brake callipers.  The alloy wheels and front grille surround – with integrated chevrons – are finished in orange chrome.

A sporty carbon finish is used around the front bumper, lower body trim and wing extensions, whilst large 18” alloy wheels, chrome door handles and even a chrome-finished exhaust complete the dynamic styling.

Inside the cabin, smart carbon trim adorns the dashboard, centre console, steering wheel embellisher, armrests and door side mouldings.  The vibrant orange bodywork and decals continue into the cabin with the glossy strip of the dash, gear stick and gear stick surround finished in the same bright tone.  The sporty, figure-hugging seats are also touched with orange elements and are embossed with ‘Citroën Racing’.

A DS3 Racing signature on the rear tailgate and an individually numbered identification plate fixed to the roof-lining further confirm the model’s exclusivity.

On the road, DS3 Racing’s WRC pedigree is evident.  Benefiting from Citroën’s extensive knowledge of racing dynamics, a carbon-finished air diffuser stabilises the car at high speeds, whilst the chassis and suspension have been adapted to provide even more precision, control, sportier handling and swifter cornering.

Based on the existing DSport powered by the THP 150, production Citroën DS3 Racing editions will be finished in a special workshop and fitted with a parts kit developed according to Citroën Racing specifications.

Unlike traditional 4-seater coupés, with their long, low design, the DS HIGH RIDER is compact and muscular.

Its character is expressed in its unique driving sensations, with a sleek flowing windscreen that soars over the heads of front occupants – hinting at a bright and spacious cabin environment. The apparently continuous glazed area of the side windows connects the A-pillars to the gently sloping roof line of the rear.

Planted firmly on stylish 19” alloy wheels and beautifully in proportion, DS HIGH RIDER’s confident profile is characterised by its high waistline. Its front end is purposeful with gaping air intakes, long incisive headlights and defined ridges along the bonnet.

DS HIGH RIDER is an expression of automotive luxury and elegance – exemplified by its glossy golden paintwork and brushed chrome trim that accentuate the car’s flowing lines. The roof is covered with a coated textile material – a tactile feature of quality.

Axeon, Europe’s largest independent lithium-ion battery systems supplier, is to develop a new high capacity battery for the electric Citroën C1 ev’ie, manufactured by the UK-based Electric Car Corporation, with a view to supplying between 300 and 500 batteries in the 12 months following a successful trial.

Axeon, based in Dundee, is Europe’s leading designer, developer and manufacturer of customised advanced lithium-ion battery packs and charging systems for a wide range of automotive and other applications, with its core business in developing and supplying such systems for use in electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Axeon will provide a pre-production battery pack that combines an advanced battery with an energy density of 230Wh/kg and innovative mechanical design, meaning not only improved battery efficiency, but also improved performance and extended range in a smaller, lighter and less rigid package.

Key to the package will be Axeon’s proprietary battery management system (BMS), which plays an essential role in any multiple cell battery pack. It monitors the state of a battery, measuring and controlling key performance parameters, which ensures the battery operates safely and prolongs its useful life.

Lawrence Berns, CEO of Axeon, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Electric Car Corporation. This agreement is an endorsement of our technology development plans, further underlining our capabilities in the battery sector and our dominant position in the market, allowing us to capitalize on opportunities and continue to grow the company.”

The existing Citroën C1 ev’ie has a range of more than 60 miles and a top speed of 60mph. It has been described by Car magazine as “the electric car class leader” and by Autocar as “the first ‘respectable’ electric city car on the British market”.

Citroën Racing’s trip to Lapland in order to prepare for the Swedish Rally, round one of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship, was crowned with success. Dani Sordo and Marc Marti won every stage of the rally, while Kimi Räikkönen and Kaj Lindström showed their ability to rapidly get to grips with the Citroën C4 WRC.

The Arctic Lapland Rally, based around Rovaniemi – a small town in Finland close the Arctic Circle – offered a happy hunting ground for Citroën Racing Technologies. With Rally Sweden just two weeks away, the team were able to fit in some useful practice by entering two C4 WRCs. With World Rally Cars not allowed on the Finnish Championship, a special category was set up by the organisers.

Throughout the rally, Dani Sordo put in a true demonstration run. The young Spaniard set 12 fastest times in as many stages. Having come to Finland to perfect his driving on ice and snow, Dani drew an extremely positive conclusion from the experience. “I enjoyed myself so much that I would happily have driven on for a few more stages!” he said. “This weekend went well, run in perfect conditions, and we were able to carry out some useful work with the team. Of course, there was no real pressure. All the more reason for us to drive a very disciplined event! After looking at the data with the engineers, it’s clear that we’ve made consistent progress. That gives me a lot of confidence as we head into the new season, which is just a few days away now.”

After his first rally at the wheel of a WRC machine, Kimi Räikkönen was also able to draw a positive conclusion. Throughout the two days of the rally, the gap between Dani and the Finn stayed consistent at around eight-tenths of a second per kilometre. “Things didn’t exactly get off to the best start as we went off the road during the second stage,” said the Citroën Junior Team driver. “But luckily there was no mechanical damage and I was able to continue in the rally. From there it got a lot better for me and we were much more consistent. We put a few more kilometres under our belt, which was vital to help us continue learning the C4 WRC. As well as being pleased by our performances I was also pleased by the way we were able to work with the team. We developed our set-up in the right direction and now we are going to continue our work in order to arrive in Sweden in the strongest possible position.”

Benoit Nogier, Citroën Racing Technologies team manager, concluded: “This practice event allowed the team to make more progress in preparation for the Rally Sweden. Dani drove exactly the sort of rally that we expected from him. He was fast and consistent, growing in confidence on the surface that comes least naturally to him. As for Kimi, he was quickly able to put his mishap at the start of the rally behind him and get to the end of a complex event, whilst improving at the same pace as Dani.”

Kimi Räikkönen got his first taste of the Citroën C4 WRC earlier this week, at a private gravel test track close to the team’s Satory workshops.  This initial shakedown allowed the Finn to start getting used to the car that he will drive in the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship.

With only a few weeks left before this year’s World Rally Championship season gets underway in Sweden on 12th February, Kimi Räikkönen has already started his preparations in earnest.

The 2007 Formula 1 World Champion travelled to Paris to see Citroën Racing’s facilities for himself and to test the Citroën C4 WRC on a gravel test track within the Satory complex.  Having covered around 50 kilometres, the latest Citroën Junior Team driver appreciated the chance to familiarise himself with his new car.

‘I very much enjoyed meeting the team properly for the first time,’ he said.  ‘It was good to try out a few different things; I was very interested to see how the car reacted when you changed some of the settings.  Now, I’m really keen to get back behind the wheel of the C4 again!’

Kimi Räikkönen’s first competitive outing will be on 28th January when he competes in the Arctic Lapland Rally in a Citroën C4 WRC to prepare for the forthcoming Swedish Rally, the first round of the 2010 World Rally Championship.

C-ZERO, Citroën’s new all-electric four-seater city car, is to make its world show premiere at the 88th European Motor Show in Brussels later this month – alongside 25 other models from Citroën’s award-winning range.

Zero fuel consumption, zero CO2 emissions and zero engine noise – the aptly named C-ZERO is Citroën’s 100% electric solution to meet the demands of modern day urban driving.  With compact dimensions, rapid charge and generous range for day-to-day car journeys, C-ZERO is a perfect city companion.

C-ZERO’s permanent magnet synchronous motor is powered by a latest-generation lithium-ion battery system and delivers 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm.  Maximum torque of 180Nm is available from 0 to 2,000rpm.  The batteries can either be charged by plugging the supply cord into a 220-volt socket or, alternatively, C-ZERO can be charged using a 400-volt supply for an 80% charge in 30 minutes. 

Despite measuring just 3.48m long, C-ZERO offers a spacious and comfortable cabin interior with four real seats and a 166 litre boot.  On the road, C-ZERO has a top speed of 80mph, acceleration from 0-62mph in 15 seconds and a range of around 80 miles over a standard combined cycle. C-ZERO’s 9m turning circle and nimble handling also make it easy to navigate through city traffic.  

C-ZERO is set for launch in the last quarter of 2010 and prospective customers can request an exclusive test-drive prior to placing a pre-order at www.c-zero.citroen.com.

With 26 vehicles on display, Citroën’s show stand will feature almost all of its passenger car range, including the new C3 – which goes ‘on sale’ in the UK on 15th January – and the forthcoming DS3, as well as the Company’s chic REVOLTE city car concept, which made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009.

Citroën’s C1 starts the New Year with a smart upgrade – thanks to the introduction of a stylish new VTR+ trim level.  Directly replacing the previous VTR models, the new VTR+ trim provides enhanced standard specification in the form of a highly attractive ‘Leather Pack’, which includes part leather/part Alcantara® upholstery, leather steering wheel and gear knob for enhanced comfort, as well as shiny black interior touches for an elegant finish.

Seeing off competition from the Skoda Yeti to take the coveted ‘Motoring Oscar’, Citroën’s innovative MPV – the biggest small car on the road – impressed the judges with its compact, purposeful exterior, combined with plentiful internal storage and flexible seating arrangement.

This latest accolade comes at the end of a hugely successful year for the C3 Picasso, adding to five awards already under its belt from the likes of Auto Express, Top Gear and What Diesel.

Ahead of the launch in spring 2010, Citroën has released prices and specification details for its most hotly anticipated model to date – DS3. Citroën has also unveiled an online configurator that allows members of the public to create their perfect DS3.

DS3 is an assertive, urban 3-door supermini with radical styling, elegant detailing and an extensive choice of customisable design options for a bespoke driving experience. DS3 is the first model from Citroën’s new DS line, which will consist of three distinctively styled, attention grabbing cars – DS3, DS4 and DS5 – that highlight the very best of Citroën’s ‘Créative Technologie’.

DS3 will be offered in three new Citroën trim levels – DSign, DStyle and DSport – with a choice of three petrol and two HDi diesels ranging from 90hp to 150hp. All three DS3 petrol engines were co-developed with BMW.

An environmentally considerate 99g/km 1.6HDi 16V 90hp will also be available – delivering up to 74.3mpg.

The DS3 range starts with the petrol 1.4 16V VTi 95hp in DSign trim, which is priced from just £11,700.

The price of a fully specified, fully personalised, range-topping DSport model, powered by the punchy 1.6 THP 150hp petrol engine, is £18,775.

Due to great customer interest in the model, Citroën has taken the exceptional step of launching an online DS3 configurator – significantly in advance of the car’s on-sale date – so future owners can create their perfect DS3, based on their own performance and style preferences.

Customers start using the configurator by selecting the engine and trim level for their DS3. Then, depending on these initial choices, they can specify body colour, roof colour and roof graphics, as well as a host of other features like chrome door mirrors, chrome rubbing strips, up to 17’ alloy wheels in different styles and colours, front LEDs, upholstery material and colour scheme, and even one of six colours for the dashboard and gear knob.

There are also equipment packs to choose from, which include features like automatic headlamps, rear parking sensors, MyWay satellite navigation, Connecting Box (Bluetooth with USB socket), and a front central armrest.

The choice is comprehensive and unprecedented for a new car by a mainstream manufacturer.

As an example of the extensive personalisation DS3 offers and the resulting prices, a mid-range 1.6 16V VTi 120hp model in DStyle trim, specified with a metallic body colour, contrasting roof, chrome door mirrors, chrome rubbing strips, 16’ white diamond-tipped alloy wheels, LED diodes, mistral and cloth interior, a shiny black dashboard and the Connecting Box with HiFi system has an OTR price of £14,650 – just £950 more than an un-personalised model with the same engine and trim.

Citroën customers can be amongst the first to enjoy the benefits of tax-free motoring, in 2010 – in a car specifically created as an electric vehicle. Following Alistair Darling’s Pre-Budget Report earlier today, the introduction of incentives for electric vehicles is good news for company car buyers considering the CITROËN C-ZERO, which is due for launch in the last quarter of 2010.

Company car users are now able to pre-order their CITROËN C-ZERO safe in the knowledge that, when it is delivered next year, it will be exempt from company car tax. Customers will also benefit from exceptionally low running costs with C-ZERO achieving a range of around 130km (80miles), over a standard combined cycle, from a single charge using a domestic power supply.

The CITROËN C-ZERO is a full-electric vehicle powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 47kW or 64bhp EEC from 3,000 to 6,000rpm. Maximum torque of 180Nm is available from 0 to 2,000rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear.

The motor is powered by a latest-generation 330-volt lithium-ion battery system comprising 88 50Ah cells (for onboard energy of 16kWh), mounted in the centre of the vehicle. Lithium-ion technology keeps battery weight down compared with conventional technology, while offering equivalent performance. It is also resistant to partial re-charges, which have no impact on battery longevity.

Re-charging the C-ZERO’s batteries could not be simpler. Owners plug the supply cord into a 220-volt socket. A complete charge takes six hours, while an 80% charge is possible in just 30 minutes using an external station with a single-phase current of 125A at 400V, for power of up to 50kW.

The CITROËN C-ZERO is perfectly adapted to the needs of all kinds of users – including public sector operators, local authorities, smaller businesses and company fleets.

With four real seats – thanks to a 2.55m wheelbase – and a 166 litre boot, the C-ZERO is impressively quiet to drive and boasts a plethora of comfort and safety equipment. Original-fit features include power steering, ABS, traction control, ESP, electric windows, six airbags and air conditioning.

The C-ZERO’s compact exterior dimensions – 3.48m long – and a 9m turning circle, make it a cinch to nip in and out of city traffic. The Citroën C4 WRC has scooped the Rally Car of the Year crown at the prestigious Autosport Awards – for the second year in a row. This follows a fifth Manufacturers’ title for the Citroën Total World Rally Team and an unprecedented sixth consecutive World Rally Championship for Sébastien Loeb – secured in dramatic fashion by a single point on the final day of the 2009 season.

The 2010 World Rally Championship will see the Citroën Total World Rally Team enter C4 WRCs for Sébastien Loeb and Dani Sordo. A second team will also now run two C4 WRCs for Kimi Räikkönen and Sébastien Ogier in the colours of Red Bull and Citroën.

Citroën UK Managing Director, Gary Savage, who accepted the award from 1981 WRC Champion Ari Vatanen, commented, ‘It has been a terrific season for everyone at Citroën to win the championship for a fifth time. Next year, I think having Kimi Räikkönen will be great for the WRC – a contemporary F1 driver, and former world champion, racing against Sébastien Loeb, in such a good car, will be really exciting.’

The C-ZERO’s compact exterior dimensions – 3.48m long – and a 9m turning circle, make it a cinch to nip in and out of city traffic.  And with a top speed of 130kph (80mph), acceleration from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 15 seconds and 60-90kph (37-56mph) in 6 seconds, along with a range of around 130km (80miles), over a standard combined cycle, it is also fully at ease out on the open road.

Citroën maintains its reputation for producing lower CO2 engines with the introduction of two new greener power-plants in the C5 range. A number of other model range changes are also implemented with immediate effect.

The key improvements are:

* A new BMW co-developed 1.6i 16V THP 155hp petrol engine has replaced the out-going 2.0i 16V 143hp unit. This Euro V engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and is available in the VTR+ NAV Saloon.
* A new 2.0HDi 16V 160hp diesel has replaced the 2.0HDi 16V 140hp and the 2.2HDi 16V 173hp engines. Also Euro V rated, this new unit offers the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox and is available on both Saloon and Tourer models, in VTR+ NAV and Exclusive trim.
* The SX trim level is renamed VTR (specification remains unchanged).
* The integration of a new Bluetooth® system with USB box as standard equipment on Exclusive models.

The new 1.6i 16V THP 155hp petrol delivers 240Nm (177lb.ft) of torque at 1400rpm and an 8% increase in power, combined with an 18.5% increase in combined-cycle fuel economy and a 16% reduction in CO2 emissions – down from 198g/km to 167g/km. Thanks to the lower emissions, VED is reduced from £215 to £175.

The new 2.0HDi 16V 160hp diesel provides 340Nm (251lb.ft) of torque at 2000rpm and – in comparison to the out-going 140hp manual C5 Saloon – a 14% increase in power, a 3% increase in fuel economy (combined cycle) and reduced CO2 emissions – down 4% from 153g/km to 147g/km. The lower emissions means VED is reduced from £150 to £125 (includes the Tourer manual).

For the automatic versions, CO2 emissions are 179g/km on both the Saloon and Tourer – reduced from 189g/km and 191g/km respectively. In both cases VED is reduced by £40, from £215 to £175.

Significantly, for company car drivers, BIK taxation charges also reduce with the launch of these new engines.

The introduction of the new integrated Bluetooth® system with USB Box – as standard on Exclusive models – provides drivers with an easy and safe way to stay in contact on the move, along with the ability to connect portable media players directly into the car’s audio system.

The biggest small car on the road, Citroën’s award-winning C3 Picasso, is now even more functional and economical with the availability of a new optional Bluetooth® upgrade and a recent engine improvement that sees the funky MPV deliver sub-120g/km CO2 emissions for just £35 a year road tax.

Further improving C3 Picasso’s already impressive environmental credentials, the 1.6HDi 16V 90hp diesel engine has been re-homologated and, in VTR+ & Exclusive trim, now emits just 119g/km of CO2 (down from 125g).  Consequently, both of these C3 Picasso models are now classified in VED band C – meaning an annual road tax reduction from £120 to just £35.  Even more significantly, these models now deliver an extra 2.7mpg on the combined cycle, bringing the new figure to 62.8mpg. 

Also on VTR+ and Exclusive – as part of a new option pack – an integrated Bluetooth® hands-free system has been introduced, so drivers can safely and easily keep in touch when they are on the move.  This new option also includes a built-in USB Box and socket, which allows users to connect a portable MP3 player directly to the car’s audio system.  Menu navigation and music selection is managed via the steering-mounted and dashboard radio controls, with song titles displayed on the radio screen.

Sébastien Loeb snatched the World Rally Championship by a single point at the weekend in a dramatic final rally of the season in Wales. Starting the Rally of Great Britain a point behind Mikko Hirvonen, Loeb held his nerve to lead from start to finish to secure a famous victory, his 54th overall, and a historic sixth consecutive World Rally Championship Drivers’ title.

Loeb and co-driver Daniel Elena’s triumph, their seventh of the season, capped off a successful year for the Citroën Total World Rally Team who wrapped up the Manufacturers’ title at the penultimate rally in Spain three weeks ago.

Sébastien Loeb commented, ‘There was so much pressure right up to the end of the rally. It’s never easy to compare one title with another, but I think this is the best one in terms of the sporting battle we had. This was the final rally and we couldn’t afford to get it wrong. Everybody expected us to win, but I can tell you that nothing was certain until we reached the finish.’

Dani Sordo, who took third place in Wales and third overall in the 2009 World Rally Championship commented, ‘When we got to within nine tenths of Mikko in the penultimate stage, we told ourselves we had to give it a go and we pushed to the limit. We believed we could do it, but he managed  to hold out. I’m satisfied with a third-place finish in the championship, and that I made a real contribution to Citroëns’s success. We’ve had another very good season. 

Citroën UK’s Managing Director, Gary Savage, commented, ‘Three weeks after winning the Manufacturers’ title, we’ve rounded off this extraordinary season with the Drivers’ title too. As we celebrate Citroën’s 90th anniversary year we now have the best team and best driver and co-driver in the World Rally Championship. Rallying fits perfectly with Citroën’s strategy; it’s an integral part of the brand’s DNA and we are already looking forward to 2010 where we hope to secure a sixth constructors title for Citroën and a seventh consecutive title for Sébastien.’
