The NC700X crossover offers the long-travel suspension, agility and commanding riding position of an off-road bike in an overall package with high standards of stability, braking and engine performance. It promises a fun, engaging riding experience together with the practicality and ease of use that make it a machine eminently suitable for daily commuting.

At the heart of the NC700X is a purpose-built engine and transmission package. The liquid-cooled, in-line 2-cylinder 670cc engine is a lightweight and compact unit with a low centre of gravity. It offers a very usable power delivery with strong levels of torque at low to medium rpm combined with low exhaust gas emissions and outstanding fuel economy (78.8mpg WMTC mode. Tested in D-Mode). On the NC700X there is the option to enjoy this new engine with the second generation of Honda’s innovative Dual Clutch Transmission, offering both manual gear shifting and fully automatic functionality – a suitably advanced and versatile core for an innovative new motorcycle.

The NC700X has been designed with a secure internal storage space large enough to accommodate a full-face helmet, located where you would typically find the fuel tanks. It is also offered with Honda’s Combined Anti-Lock Braking System (C-ABS) as an option. It offers the practicality of a commuter with easy handling in a crossover styling.

Early in the development of the NC700X, new research yielded some key data regarding the typical engine use of a rider commuting on a mid-capacity machine. It was determined that 90% of riding involved speeds of 140km/h (87mph) or less and engine speeds of 6000rpm or less. The NC700X demanded a new engine ideally suited to this kind of usage, with strong torque characteristics across the rpm range typically used providing ease of use, thanks to its flexibility and outstanding fuel efficiency.

The liquid-cooled SOHC 670cc twin-cylinder engine has been designed to meet the challenges of the 21st century. It is smooth, clean, fuel efficient and compact, but it is also fun to use, with a strong low-rpm power delivery thanks to its relatively long-stroke SOHC architecture and specially shaped combustion chambers. Further enhancing this satisfying feeling of effortless torque is the crankshaft, which has been designed with high levels of inertial mass.

The NC700X will be produced with two different specifications of engine. One produces a peak power output of 38.1kW at 6,250rpm and 62Nm of torque at 4,750rpm; the other, specifically offered with the 2013 A2 European licensing regulations in mind, produces 35.0kW at 6,250rpm and 60Nm of torque at 4,750rpm.
Practical, efficient and reliable
The in-line two-cylinder configuration is both practical and efficient in terms of space layout, freeing up space within the body of the motorcycle. By reducing the number of parts to a minimum the engine is lighter, more efficient and more reliable. For example there is just one throttle body and one exhaust, despite the two cylinders. Where possible, components are made to do more than one job too. The camshaft also drives the water pump for the cooling system, while the balancer shaft, which ensures smooth, comfortable running, also drives the oil pump.

To further reduce fuel consumption, the engine was developed using stoichiometric analysis. By analysing combustion in this way, the engine has been developed to deliver exactly the fuel/air ratio required for a complete, clean burn at all idle engine rpm. An efficiency target of 76.2mpg per litre was accomplished thanks to these technology developments. Such low fuel consumption target is attractive given the sense of responsibility we all feel towards our environment. It also makes the NC700X more practical on a day-to-day basis, since a fuel-efficient vehicle is cheaper to run and requires fewer fuel stops over a given week of commuter travel.

Clean exhaust emissions
Thanks to the same stoichiometric analysis, used to reduce fuel consumption, the engine also burns extremely cleanly, minimising the emission of harmful exhaust gases. The PGM-FI fuel injection system supplies the optimum amount of fuel and is fully EURO-3 compliant thanks to an oxygen sensor in the exhaust. Finally the high-absorption catalyser has been located close to the engine. As a result the catalyst reaches operating temperature more quickly after a cold start, reducing harmful emissions over a typical journey.

Honda has announced the expansion of its state-of-the-art V4 model line-up by introducing the new Crosstourer, first launched as a concept model in 2010 at the Milan EICMA show. The Crosstourer will deliver all the fun and excitement of a sports tourer; with the comfortable upright riding position and manoeuvrability of an adventure machine. This is underpinned by Honda’s V4 expertise and Dual Clutch Transmission with new functionalities.

The development team, led by Yosuke Hasegawa (Large Project Leader), wanted to create a motorcycle that gave the rider a sense of challenge and adventure; a perfect travel companion, while also offering a premium and unique design complemented by cutting edge technologies; A motorcycle that could conquer a long distance journey on fast major roads and motorways, or embark on an adventure to a remote destination in the mountains.

The Crosstourer delivers this by combining sports touring features, such as the powerful V4 engine configuration also found in the VFR1200F, with features found on off-road motorcycles such as long travel suspension and an upright riding position. This crossover between two biking genres makes the Crosstourer a unique and versatile package. Long-travel suspension – a feature of off-road machinery – smooths travel over rough terrain or on uneven road surfaces. The rugged suspension system also enhances ride quality and handling. The upright riding position provides comfort and command and outstanding visibility for the rider.

Like the Crossrunner, unveiled at EICMA in 2010, the Crosstourer provides the power of a V4 engine packaged in a crossover motorcycle. Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission system is a perfect fit with the Crosstourer’s advanced, pioneering spirit. The twin-clutch transmission offers both manual gear shifting, using buttons on the handlebars, and stress-free fully automatic functionality which can be manually overridden whenever the rider chooses. The machine also comes equipped with a Traction Control System, which increases rider’s reassurance on low-friction riding surfaces, ensuring the engine never transmits more power than the rear tyre can handle. Refinements such as Honda’s Combined Anti-lock Braking System underline the motorcycle’s all-weather, all-road capability – this machine really is ready for anything.

The Crosstourer sets a new standard in full size sport adventure sports touring motorcycles. It offers a unique combination of V4 engine performance with advanced technology for stability and handling – when riding solo or with a pillion – on all types of road surface and for all lengths of journey.

Key features
Engine:Big-capacity V4 power

The 1237cc V4 engine – installed for the first time in a Honda adventure sports touring motorcycle – has been optimised for stronger low and medium rpm drive, delivering smooth power to make the Crosstourer feel effortless in a rider’s hands on long distance rides.

Transmission:Dual Clutch Transmission (optional)
Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission ensures seamless and even smoother gear changes – in any of its three riding modes – making the Crosstourer a supremely versatile motorcycle. Using two electronically controlled clutches, the system offers the choice of manual gear shifting and two fully automatic modes, one for general use (D-mode) and another for high performance riding (S-mode). The Crosstourer’s Dual Clutch Transmission also features new software logic with added functionality.

Chassis:Versatile chassis
Chosen for its excellent weight/rigidity balance, the Crosstourer’s die-cast aluminium frame mounts long-travel suspension systems front and rear to deliver an engaging riding experience and a comfortable ride on all road surfaces.

Honda Technology
Honda’s Traction Control System and Combined Antilock Braking System underline the new machine’s any-road, any-weather capability. The two ensure safe, swift running even in low-grip conditions.

Model details
Styling
The Crosstourer’s styling suggests great strength allied with a refined sportiness. Recurring design themes like sharp edges accentuate its rugged adventure style; a lack of bulk at the front of the bike gives a feeling of lightness. The headlight configuration consists of a stacked headlight arrangement, with the main beam headlight positioned above the high beam unit. The headlights and effective windscreen are positioned towards the middle of the machine to help centralise mass while also offering great wind protection. Channels in the fairing at the front of the bike reduce frontal area, while ducting cooling air into the radiators. The rear of the machine is highly functional with an integrated luggage carrier and grab rail, to which the optional panniers attach directly. The LED indicators, used for the first time on a large capacity Honda motorcycle, ensure optimum visibility.Protection from the elements
The Crosstourer features off-road inspired hand-guards to provide welcome wind and weather protection for the rider. The adjustable windscreen has been shaped using computational fluid dynamics analysis for an idealised shape and just enough wind protection. The design lets the rider feel the breeze while keeping fatigue to a minimum.

Multi-function digital instruments
The advanced multi-function instrument panel is both attractively styled and easy to read at a glance. Positioned just below the rider’s line of sight to maximise the amount of time spent looking ahead, the display is dominated by a large clear digital speedometer. This is flanked by gauges showing remaining fuel and engine temperature. Across the top of the display is a bar-type tachometer, which runs left to right as engine rpm increases. Also included is the odometer, two trip meters, remaining fuel, fuel consumption (both actual and average), range to empty, gear position indicator, clock and the currently selected Dual Clutch Transmission mode (if applicable). The brightness of the instrument panel is also adjustable.

Ergonomic Design
Key to the appeal of the Crosstourer is the off-road inspired upright riding position, perfect for riding in busy city streets and twisting rural roads alike. The Crosstourer’s carefully considered ergonomics package offers both rider and passenger a high degree of freedom. Natural support of the rider’s body weight between footpegs, seat and handlebar make the machine comfortable, even on extended rides. The riding position also offers excellent visibility for enhanced riding experience and increased hazard perception. Coupled with the generous steering lock, centralised mass and wide, tapered handlebars, gives great control at lower speeds.

Engine
The Crosstourer is a machine designed to give its rider the feeling that anything is possible. No journey is too long or demanding, no road surface impassable. Contributing significantly to this feeling is the Honda V4 engine, now within a sports adventure touring package that delivers impressive and useable power and torque that is available whenever required.Compact engine dimensions
The V4 configuration is slim and compact, reducing frontal area and helping realise a mass-centralised chassis for excellent handling. The rear cylinders are set in close proximity, making the engine narrower at the back. The result is a comfortably slim and manageable motorcycle. Contributing to the engine’s compact dimensions is Honda’s revolutionary Unicam technology, pioneered in Honda’s CRF range of single-cylinder off-road machines. This employs a single overhead camshaft configuration to reduce the size and weight of the cylinder heads and optimise combustion chamber shape, benefiting performance.

Smooth engine operation
The Crosstourer’s engine uses a combination of a 76° angle between the two banks of cylinders and a crankshaft with 28° phasing between the crankpins to virtually eliminate vibration. Since this obviates the need for a power-sapping balancer shaft, the result is a higher output together with a serene absence of vibration. This is an engine you can use all day, for hundreds of miles, with minimal fatigue.

Optimised engine settings
Based on the engine found in the VFR1200F, the Crosstourer’s powerplant has been modified to deliver more satisfying drive, even from very low engine rpm. To increase low and medium rpm drive the design of the camshafts has been revised, as has the valve timing. The result is satisfying drive, even from very low engine rpm.

Refined control
Further contributing to the V4’s superb levels of control and user-friendliness is the advanced ride-by-wire system, which precisely meets the rider’s demands with just the right amount of easily-controlled performance; no more and no less.

Dual Clutch Transmission (optional)
A product of Honda’s ongoing desire to use new technologies to bring fun and convenience to peoples’ lives, Dual Clutch Transmission uses automated clutch and gearshift operation to deliver the same riding enjoyment as a manual transmission, with the convenience of an automatic. As the name implies, the system uses two clutches: one for start-up and 1st, 3rd and 5th gears; and another for 2nd, 4th and 6th. By pre-selecting the next gear using the clutch not currently in use, the system can electronically switch clutches when required to deliver swift, smooth and seamless gearshifts. This smoothness is particularly beneficial when carrying a passenger.

A mode for every situation
Three modes of operation are available for flexibility to suit different riding styles and situations. MT mode gives full manual control, allowing the rider to shift gears with the handlebar trigger control buttons. Two fully automatic shift modes are also available. D mode is ideal for city and highway riding, and maintaining fuel efficiency. The ECU monitors several key parameters and can choose between two maps; one for normal conditions, which minimises gear shifts for smooth progress, and a second for high-load use that changes gear more readily for increased acceleration and stronger engine braking. In sporty S mode the transmission lets the engine rev a little higher before shifting up, giving greater performance, and also shifts down sooner when decelerating. In either D or S mode the Dual Clutch Transmission offers immediate manual intervention if required. The rider simply selects the required gear using the MT mode shift button. Changes to the software system now mean that at an appropriate time the system reverts back to the automatic mode.

Reassuring Traction Control System
The Crosstourer is equipped with Honda’s Traction Control System (TCS). This system monitors rear wheel speed, looking for fluctuations that could suggest an imminent loss of traction and, subsequently, machine control. If the system believes wheel-spin is imminent, engine power is momentarily reduced, maintaining traction. The system can be switched off in accordance with the rider’s preferences.

Chassis
The frame of the Crosstourer is a hollow aluminium unit that employs a quartered construction. This technique enables very precise control over the all-important weight/rigidity balance of each part of the frame. The result is superb handling with a reassuring sense of stability, regardless of the road surface.

Wheels
Developed especially for this model, the Crosstourer spoked wheels have been designed to absorb the shocks generated by rough road surfaces, working with the machine’s suspension systems to deliver a comfortably refined ride quality. Tyre sizes – 110/80-R19 at the front, 150/70-R17 at the rear – have been chosen to balance keen, agile handling with effortless traction.

Suspension
Designed to excel on the hugely varied road surfaces of Europe, the front and rear suspension systems both offer generous amounts of controlled, bump-absorbing travel. The rigid 43mm upside-down telescopic forks offer reassuring control with precise steering and stability – even during hard cornering and heavy braking. The Pro-Link rear suspension configuration combines strong traction with ride quality. Both the front forks and rear shock are adjustable for both tension (rebound) and preload, allowing riders to alter chassis characteristics to suit their riding style and intended usage.Maintenance-free shaft final drive
To ensure it is as easy to maintain as it is to ride, the Crosstourer uses a maintenance-free shaft final drive. The design of this fuss-free transmission has been developed to be both durable and quiet, even during high speed running.

Brakes
The Combined Antilock Braking System incorporates both the easy control of a Combined Braking System and the extra reassurance of an Anti-lock Braking System. The CBS effectively balances front and rear braking control for smooth operation. At the same time, the Antilock Braking System provides extra reassurance and offers more confidence in braking power in unexpected or extreme situations.

Colours
The 2012 VFR1200X Crosstourer will be launched in a range of four colours.

- Digital Silver Metallic
- Pearl Sunbeam White
- Pearl Cosmic Black
- Candy Prominence Red

Honda has revealed prices for the new 2012 Civic will range from £16,495 OTR for the entry-level 1.4-litre 100PS i-VTEC SE and from £26,595 OTR for the top of the range Civic 2.2 i-DTEC EX GT.
Honda has revealed prices for the new 2012 Civic will range from £16,495 OTR for the entry-level 1.4-litre 100PS i-VTEC SE and from £26,595 OTR for the top of the range Civic 2.2 i-DTEC EX GT. The car will also be available in the familiar SE, ES, EX and EX GT trim levels offering customers generous equipment as standard.

The new 2012 Civic was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month and order books at Honda dealerships are now open with cars arriving in dealerships during January.

New standard equipment across the range
Standard equipment new to the Civic includes, Honda’s Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) 5-inch dashboard screen which displays relevant driving details such as mpg, the idle stop status and climate and audio settings. Other new additions include a rear wiper, daytime running lights and a headlight-off timer that maintains illumination for 15 seconds after the car is locked.

Fuel saving technology
In addition, every new Civic comes with Idle Stop fuel-saving technology (manual transmission only) and an ECON switch for the first time. The ECON switch is already found in the Insight and Jazz Hybrid and activating it tells the car’s management system to adopt specific settings to improve fuel consumption. It does so without affecting overall safety levels or the general usability of the car.

Entry-level SE trim
The entry-level SE trim also includes 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning and USB connectivity for compatible MP3 audio devices. However, for an extra £1,500 – making the price from £17,995 OTR – they can have the same spec but benefit from the extra performance of a 1.8-litre 142PS i-VTEC petrol engine.

For diesel fans, the Honda Civic SE is available with a refined, powerful 2.2-litre 150PS i-DTEC engine and costs from £20,095 OTR.

ES grade
The ES specification is priced from £18,995 OTR when paired with the 1.8-litre petrol or from £21,095 OTR for the diesel. It features all the equipment found in SE and adds a host of features which are new to the Civic range, including cruise control with a speed limiter, rear view parking camera, keyfob-operated windows and door mirror folding, plus auto up/down electric rear windows.

Additional kit on ES includes dual-zone air-conditioning, BluetoothTM Hands Free Telephone (HFT), front fog lamps, auto headlights and wipers, leather steering wheel and gear knob, ambient interior lighting and 6 speaker audio system.

T-Grade package
Available on SE and ES trim levels from March 2012, the T-Grade package costs £995 and adds extra equipment to the specification including integrated satellite navigation with full European mapping and touch screen.

EX trim
EX is the third of the four trims and comes with leather upholstery with heated front seats and a HDD satellite navigation and premium audio system as standard. It costs from £21,745 OTR with the 1.8-litre petrol engine and from £23,845 OTR for the 2.2-litre diesel.

Top of the range EX GT
The flagship of the all-new Honda Civic range is EX GT, priced from £24,495 and £26,595 for the petrol and diesel respectively. New to the Honda Civic range are smart (keyless) entry/ignition, front and rear parking sensors, bi-xenon HID headlights and lumbar support. Also included on EX GT is all the equipment found in the EX plus a panoramic glass roof, 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, auto-dimming rear view mirror and sunglasses holder.

For the first time Honda’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) are available in the Civic range. This advanced technology is available as a package in EX GT specification only for an extra £1,900 OTR.

Automatic gearbox
All models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. However, the 1.8-litre petrol can be specified with a five-speed automatic gearbox for an additional £1,385.

Honda’s versatile ST1300 Pan European ‘tourer’ motorcycle has been chosen by the AA (Automobile Association) to enhance its two-wheel recovery fleet.

The previous fleet of Silverwing 600 scooters and NT700VA Deauvilles, supplied by Honda (UK) in 2008, reached the end of their service and the AA has once again chosen Honda to supply the new fleet. In total, 50 ST1300 Pan Europeans, in the distinctive yellow AA livery, will be riding around the streets of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Derby and Nottingham, as these areas are heavily congested areas and so best suit a mixture of two and four wheeled vehicles to service the AA’s members.

The Pan European was considered the most suitable motorcycle for road-side assistance by the AA for a number of reasons, to include its good luggage capacity in the form of top box and panniers, as well as its superb versatility, performance and handling, coupled with great comfort for the rider.

Steve Ives, the AA’s Chief Engineer, said: “We carried out an extensive evaluation of a number of different motorcycle models but the Honda Pan European tipped the balance on a number of counts. It has an exceptional carrying capacity as standard, so our patrols can carry extra tools and equipment without the need for pannier upgrades. Other considerations were its larger battery, which will allow us to charge car batteries using the bike, the shaft drive for improved durability, as well as its excellent handling and comfort for the rider.

“The Pan European is a very capable bike that will allow our motorbike patrols to respond to a wider range of breakdowns than before. We have always had great service from them in the past so look forward to welcoming the Pan back as the flagship of the AA motorbike fleet.”

Honda is offering two special edition versions of the classic and retro styled VT750S – the popular machine developed to deliver all-round riding enjoyment to a wide range of riders.

Both special editions feature gleaming ‘Championship White’ body work which enhances the timeless, cool appeal of this stylish model and provides a stunning contrast to its black-painted V-twin engine and luxurious chrome-finished details.

In keeping with the retro look, the tank of the first special edition is adorned with the original Honda wing logo in red, and paying homage to Honda’s racing heritage also features a solid red stripe down its centre, flanked with smaller pin stripes.

The second special edition sports the tank stripes and wing logos in a bold ‘yellow/gold’ colour, reminiscent of Honda models from several decades ago.

Both variants are sure to evoke a sense of nostalgia within those familiar with Honda models from yesteryear, whilst also having strong appeal to younger riders who appreciate the retro styling which is so popular today.

Also available in striking Pearl Heron Blue with Shasta White (Tri-colour) and sophisticated Graphite Black colour schemes, the classic styling of the VT750S is complimented by the smooth performance of a thoroughly contemporary machine. All kinds of riders, including relative newcomers, appreciate its proportions and light, confidence-inspiring handling. The VT750S also packs enough punch to keep more experienced riders entertained and is versatile enough for a range of uses from daily commuting to quick weekend blasts for leisure and light touring.

Each of the special edition colour scheme VT750s are priced at £6,200 OTR, as is the current tri-colour machine, with the Graphite Black version available for £5,950 OTR.
The 2012 CBR1000RR builds on the legacy of “total control” that has shaped its predecessors for 20 years since the introduction of its original ground-breaking forerunner, the CBR900RR, at the EICMA show in 1991. Since then, successive evolutions of the machine have layered advancement upon advancement, while retaining its defining strength of a perfect balance between power and control.

Under the overall development concept of “natural evolution of Super Sports”, the 2012 CBR1000RR development team have concentrated their efforts on the chassis to enhance riding enjoyment even further. In particular new wheels and new front and rear suspension systems have been introduced for even better handling, traction and braking performance. The advanced Balance Free Rear Cushion rear suspension is a world-first for a production motorcycle.

The team has also created a new, even more aggressive styling to better communicate the dynamism and sheer speed of the new CBR1000RR. In addition, the already comprehensive instrument panel has additional functionality making the bike more user-friendly, helping riders get the most from Honda’s most exciting and advanced Super Sport machine yet: the 20th anniversary CBR1000RR Fireblade.

In the words of Hirofumi Fukunaga, Large Project Leader for the 2012 CBR1000RR “This is a model allowing all super sports bike lovers, including the most experienced, to savour the joy of owning the CBR1000RR, while at the same time feeling more fun in sporty riding and more joy of riding than ever before, whether it be on winding roads or at a circuit.”

Dynamic styling package: A new nose, layered main fairing and a tail section bring a more aggressive and a dynamic look to the 2012 CBR1000RR.

Balance Free Rear Cushion: Introduced for the first time on a production motorcycle, this advanced new rear shock uses a double-tube design to ensure smoother and more accurate response, superior damping and improved traction.

Big Piston Front Fork: The 2012 CBR1000RR also features inverted 43mm telescopic forks with Showa’s Big Piston technology. With a unique design to reduce internal pressures, the Big Piston Front Fork offers improved damping, increased front tyre grip and better stability under braking.

12-spoke wheels: Stunning 12-spoke cast aluminium wheels provide more consistent rigidity to work with the new forks to deliver improved handling.

Enhanced instrumentation LCD: Now with lap timer, gear position indicator, and tachometer with 4 modes of display.

Assisted slipper clutch: Reduces the engine back-torque transmitted to the rear wheel when shifting down, increasing chassis stability under deceleration and on corner entry.

Second generation HESD steering damper: Essential on such a light, compact and yet powerful machine, the Honda Electronic Steering Damper delivers both high-speed stability and light, responsive low-speed steering.

Optional Combined ABS: The 2012 Fireblade can be experienced with Honda’s advanced electronically-controlled Combined ABS braking system, which offers all the reassurance of Honda’s Combined Brake System and antilock braking.

Revised PGM-DSFI settings: The CBR1000RR retains its hugely powerful 999cc inline-4 engine but new fuel injection settings make it even smoother and easier to use, particularly at smaller throttle openings.

Honda has released the first exclusive photos of the new Civic. The images show the new clean, dynamic and flowing exterior design and high quality interior.

The designers of the new Civic wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car’s character but tailor them to communicate the new model’s more dynamic feel. Sources of inspiration included a ‘blended wing body’ aeroplane in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body for superior aerodynamic performance.

Nearly all of the body components on the new Civic have been redesigned with particular focus on ride and handling, reduced CO2 emissions, design and interior quality, while retaining the class-leading cabin, boot space and practicality.

Designed and developed specifically for the European market, the new Civic will be offered as a five-door hatchback and will reach UK showrooms in early 2012.
The new Honda Civic will be launched tomorrow at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA).

The Honda Civic Type R MUGEN debuted in 2010 to near-universal acclaim, and a 20-strong limited edition production run of the hand-built, motorsport-derived machines went on sale to UK enthusiasts.

Now technicians at Northampton-based MUGEN Euro have worked their magic again, producing a unique version with even more power and torque.

The cylinder bore and stroke have been increased to create an overall capacity of 2,156cc, so the car has been christened the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 2.2.

The result of the change is a boost in engine output from 240 to 260PS, and additional torque is available throughout the rev range. Peak torque is now 240Nm at 6,000rpm. Compared to a standard Honda Civic Type R, both power and torque are up 30 per cent.

When coupled to the host of motorsport-derived components created exclusively by MUGEN – including sports suspension, uprated brakes and a stunning performance bodykit – the MUGEN 2.2 represents the ultimate expression of the Honda Civic Type R philosophy.

It has been created as a fitting tribute to the highly successful Honda K20 2.0-litre petrol engine, which has ceased production in Japan. Homologated by MUGEN as an FIA Group N race series engine, the K20 has long been the powerplant of choice with tuners and motorsports competitors who want the very best in naturally aspirated performance.

Moreover, it has been at the very heart of everything MUGEN Euro has achieved since the company was formed in 2006. Its skilled engineers have built or tuned almost 400 examples for race and rally competitors around the world.

The Honda K20 engine has also powered the only two complete road cars produced by MUGEN; the Honda Civic MUGEN RR four-door saloon sold in Japan, plus the limited Honda Civic Type R MUGEN sold in the UK.

Hiro Toyoda, vice-president of MUGEN Euro, commented: “Environmental pressures mean naturally aspirated engines are rapidly being superseded by other engine architectures and technologies. We may never see the like of the K20 in a mainstream production car again, so felt it only fitting we mark the occasion with this special 2.2 version of the Honda Civic Type R”.

Plans for the 2.2 car have yet to be finalised. Of the 20 limited edition 2.0-litre cars launched in 2010, four remain unsold and it’s possible MUGEN Euro may offer them with the reworked engine. Existing owners could also be invited to return their cars for an upgrade. A decision on these two proposals is expected to be made shortly.

Honda will unveil a cleaner, higher quality Insight hybrid at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The revised 5-door hatchback will have lower CO2 emissions of 96g/km*, achieved through enhanced aerodynamics and powertrain efficiency. Reduced engine friction, changes to the CVT transmission and improved air conditioning all contribute to lower fuel consumption.

These changes mean that the 2012 Insight once again qualifies for exemption from the London Congestion Charge, and falls into the lowest VED band, meaning owners will pay no annual road tax. The new figures also ensure that Insight remains in one of the lowest groups for Benefit in Kind taxation.

For 2012, the Insight also receives a refresh of the exterior design, including a new front grille. At the back, visibility is increased through the introduction of a slimmer spolier and a modified tailgate garnish, and a reduction in the size of the wiper motor.

Adjustments have also been made to the engine and suspension for an overall improvement to ride comfort and stability, and interior quality has been enhanced.

The FCX Clarity, Honda’s state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell car which emits zero harmful emissions will be making its UK public debut at the low carbon motor festival which takes place at Battersea Power Station between 8-11 September. As well as being displayed on the Honda stand, the car will be running in the Parade which takes place three times each day.

Honda’s trio of environmentally-friendly hybrid cars – the Insight, CR-Z and Jazz Hybrid – will also be at EcoVelocity. Visitors will get the chance to drive them around a specially-constructed track in the shadow of the capital city’s famous landmark and learn all about the benefits of the technology under the skin. The drives are offered on a ‘just turn up’ basis with no need to pre-book a slot.

Dave Hodgetts, Managing Director of Honda (UK), said: “We’re delighted to be supporting EcoVelocity because it gives people the opportunity to experience our cars and see how well they compare to other hybrids on the market. With the Honda CR-Z, Insight and Jazz Hybrid, we have a fantastic range of vehicles to suit every need.”

The EcoVelocity Show, organized by IMIE and Metro, will be held at Battersea Power Station on September 8-11th. This outdoor motoring festival will bring to life a new world of motoring for prospective buyers that are keen to experience the latest in eco-technology or just enjoy a fun and interactive day out. For more details and to buy tickets please visit http://www.ecovelocity.co.uk

FCX Clarity: Quite simply, the world’s first production fuel cell car. It’s not a concept or experimental prototype, but a fully-certified vehicle built on a factory line like any other model. The clever bit is that driving it, using all of its 270-mile range and even filling it up with hydrogen is just as easy as owning any other Honda. It is an electric car that generates its electricity on board using compressed hydrogen as an energy carrier and emits only water vapour from its tailpipe.

Insight: Refreshed for 2011, the Insight is a five-door family car that’s high on practicality as well as environmental considerations. Powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine and supported by Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology, it returns combined fuel economy of 64.2mpg with CO2 emissions of just 101g/km. Every Insight features Eco-Assist, Honda’s innovative driver-coaching system that encourages more frugal use of fuel.

CR-Z: The world’s first sporty hybrid features a stunning exterior design that’s like nothing else on the road today. Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but Honda’s IMA hybrid technology and a six-speed manual gearbox mean a performance-oriented and fun driving experience is guaranteed. Yet the CR-Z still delivers figures of 56.5mpg and just 117g/km.

Jazz Hybrid: Honda’s newest hybrid car brings the advantages of the petrol/electric powertrain to supermini owners for the first time. Everything that’s loved about the regular Jazz is still present; including the ultra-versatile Magic Seats, but it emits only 104g/km of CO2 and fuel economy is an astonishing 64.2mpg – a 23 per cent improvement of the best-selling version of the Jazz.

The new 2012 Honda Civic will feature a cleaner, more powerful and economical diesel engine to deliver lower running costs for owners.

Improvements to Honda’s 2.2-litre i-DTEC engine, coupled with a low-drag body design, mean the new 2012 Civic emits only 110 g/km* of CO2 – while producing a powerful 150 PS and 350 Nm of torque.

This new lower CO2 figure signals a drop of 29g/km over the outgoing model and will enable customers to benefit from free road tax for the first year (and only £20 per year from then on), as well as cheaper fuel bills. Meanwhile, company car drivers will be able to take advantage of BIK tax rates among the lowest for a small family car.

The improved engine also shows that customers do not need to sacrifice on power to achieve better economy – the 2.2 diesel delivers a 10 PS boost over the outgoing engine.

Honda’s advanced i-DTEC engine received a number of enhancements in the quest for lower emissions. The oil flow through the engine has been carefully managed to reduce circulation loss, while engine materials and components have been revised to reduce friction. A five g/km reduction in CO2 was also achieved with the addition of Idle Stop (start/stop) technology.

Extensive wind tunnel testing was carried out to improve the car’s aerodynamics, reduce drag and refine high speed stability, all of which contribute towards lowering emissions.

“To achieve a good CO2 figure, you need to optimise every aspect of the car,” says Katsushi Watanabe, Development Leader for the engine. “Reducing the emissions was our key target and we’re proud to say that we have achieved this without compromising the high performance character of the engine. We want our customers to have fun when they drive this car.”

MUGEN of Japan has built a CR-Z MUGEN RR design concept to demonstrate MUGEN’s capabilities in terms of function, style, performance and agility. The CR-Z MUGEN RR was produced by M-TEC in Japan for show purposes only and there are currently no plans for further production.

The CR-Z MUGEN RR has been created with many bespoke prototype parts, several of which are created in carbon fibre, including the bonnet, passenger doors and rear tailgate. Other features unique to the car include a full length carbon-fibre underbody, a twin central-exit exhaust, vented front bumpers and race-developed suspension. Orange 4-piston monobloc brake calipers and forged 18-inch alloy wheels both complement the vibrant Valencia Orange Pearl exterior paint work.

Inside the car, the seats are clad in MUGEN-branded colour-coded leather/Alcantara. The addition of a race-developed information screen has the ability to record chassis and engine data as well as housing a Satellite navigation and audio system. This high tech kit will monitor the car over two laps to “learn” a circuit and then record lap data and vehicle tracking using GPS.

The design concept was unveiled for its world debut at the beginning of July in the Moving Motor Show area at Goodwood Festival of Speed and complements the high-performance CR-Z MUGEN, which was designed and built by MUGEN EURO based in the UK.

A new Honda Civic that’s more confident, clever and versatile makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The ninth generation Civic hatchback will offer stand-out looks combined with class-leading space for passengers and luggage – and will continue to deliver peace of mind with low running costs, through Honda’s famed and unparalleled reliability.

Quality and comfort levels have improved dramatically over the outgoing model.

Honda’s new small family car has been designed exclusively for Europe and has been extensively tested on the region’s roads. It goes on sale during 2012.

Smoother Ride
Honda engineers concentrated a huge amount of time and effort improving ride quality and handling of the Civic, and through significant changes to the suspension set-up they have enhanced both comfort and body control.

To give customers the biggest cabin and boot space in the C-sector, the Civic retains a rear torsion beam suspension system – but the latest set-up uses clever fluid-filled compliance bushes to improve overall ride performance and handling. It has also been strengthened to give better stability, particularly at high speeds.

The first of five films on the development of the new Civic features Honda engineers discussing the improvements made to ride and handling. The video can be viewed at www.honda.co.uk/newcivic

Honda has released an image of the new CR-V Concept, providing the first official glimpse of styling direction. The all-new, fourth-generation CR-V is set to go on sale in the United States by the end of 2011, and in Europe in Autumn 2012.

The new CR-V Concept embraces a distinctive and bold styling direction. Compared to the previous generation, the concept model takes on a more aggressive stance with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia. The lower front bumper wraps smartly upward to convey SUV capability, while the overall lower front bumper design now integrates more smoothly into the fascia for improved aerodynamics.

The CR-V’s vertical taillights remain for the next model with a more three-dimensional style that wraps further into the design of the vehicle.

Equipped with more efficient engines compared to the current model, the new CR-V is expected to deliver improved fuel economy.

The CR-V is one of the top-selling SUVs, sold in more than 160 countries throughout Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Africa.

The new CR-V Concept will be on first public display at the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, California, in September 2011.

The latest evolution of Honda’s Goldwing for 2012 will be available in the UK at the end of 2011, featuring a range of updates for this superb machine which has been regarded as the pinnacle of two-wheel touring since its conception almost forty years ago.

Several updates have refined the luxury tourer even further including more dynamic styling which provides a very modern and sleek look and improved weather protection, as well as enhanced stability due to a more streamlined airflow through the machine. Revised suspension front and rear further enhance performance, ride quality and stability and increased luggage capacity and upgraded audio and navigation systems also give this latest generation of Goldwing the continued luxurious grand touring reputation it has become renowned for over the years.

As with previous Goldwing models, Honda’s superb dual combined ABS comes as standard, as does an airbag – one development in motorcycle technology which broke new ground in 2006 and to this day the Goldwing is the only motorcycle to be equipped with an airbag.

The Goldwing’s unique history dates back to 1972, when a new Honda design team set about creating a motorcycle which fulfilled their brief to develop a luxurious grand touring machine capable of covering vast distances. The first production Goldwing debuted in 1975 and since this time has seen a number of revisions to ensure the machine is kept up-to-date and in-line with customers’ requirements from a grand touring motorcycle.

There will be a arrange of Genuine Honda Accessories available for the 2012 Goldwing to include colour-matched rear spoiler with built-in high mount brake lights, high intensity fog lights, helmet headsets, pannier and trunk inner bags, chrome-plated covers and pillion armrest extension, to name but a few.

Goldwing owners from across the globe will be meeting this weekend at the annual ‘Wing Ding’ event in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, where the latest Goldwing, joined by thousands of others from past and present, will be on show to highlight its latest credentials.

Due in dealerships at the end of 2011, the Goldwing will be available in three new colours: Glint Wave Blue Metallic, Pearl Fadeless White and Graphite Black. The price will be announced closer to its launch date.

Honda (UK) and MUGEN Euro have revealed the first official photographs of the CR-Z MUGEN – the higher-performance hybrid coupe.

Development of the supercharged Honda CR-Z is on track, with performance figures already looking promising.

Early tests with a prototype car based on a standard CR-Z and a mid-tune engine have given 0-60mph times around that of the Civic Type R.

After a further 15 per cent increase in power over this ‘stage 1′ engine and with over 50kg reduced from the chassis, overall performance is set to meet MUGEN’s original targets.

“Early fuel consumption tests have also been encouraging,” says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro. “We’ve retained the three driving modes from the standard car and economy ranges from 50+mpg in ‘eco’ mode to mid-30 mpg when tapping into the supercharged power in a special ‘MUGEN’ mode.”

MUGEN Euro is developing a highly-tuned version of Honda’s CR-Z, which will deliver “Type R-like” performance from the hybrid’s petrol-electric powertrain – and may offer even better fuel economy.

This faster, more powerful car will make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

The CR-Z MUGEN will feature enhancements to both the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine and the Honda IMA system to boost power and torque, while bespoke brakes and suspension will be fitted to improve the chassis dynamics.

The major engine changes, and those made to exhaust and induction, may even result in greater mpg and lower CO2 emissions during some conditions. However, at this early development stage, final power, torque and fuel economy figures are not yet known.

Lightweight components, including a carbon fibre bonnet, will be employed to lower the overall weight, and the car will use MUGEN alloy wheels to reduce unsprung mass.

To improve aerodynamics and give the car an even more sporting look, MUGEN body parts will be added, including front and rear bumpers, and a spoiler.

“We wanted to extend the performance of the CR-Z,” says Hiro Toyoda of MUGEN Euro. “It is already a fun car to drive, with an excellent chassis, but we thought that with more power and enhanced torque delivery it could be even more exciting. However, as with all MUGEN projects, we have stayed true to the Honda design and philosophy, and the electric motor is still a vital ingredient to boost performance and economy.”

The CR-Z MUGEN is a joint project between Honda (UK) and MUGEN Euro – the Northampton-based subsidiary of Honda’s long standing tuning partner MUGEN. In 2009, MUGEN Euro produced the Civic Type R MUGEN, an extreme, 240PS version of Honda popular hot hatch.

“This will be one quick hybrid,” says Martin Moll, Head of Marketing for Honda (UK). “With more torque, more power and MUGEN’s experience of working with Honda cars, we’re expecting great things. It promises to show how hybrid cars can be even more exciting to drive.”

At this stage, the CR-Z MUGEN is being developed purely as a one-off prototype, with no plans for a production version.

The class-leading and race winning Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade has won an award for ‘Best Used Bike of the Year’.
Almost six hundred motorcycle dealers across the country – representing a broad range of manufacturers - voted in the recent British Dealer News motorcycle industry survey, with the vast majority choosing the Honda Fireblade as the best used bike of the year.Reasons for the decision included opinions that the CBR1000RR Fireblade offers the best overall riding package, is a consistent top seller and desirable motorcycle, rates very highly in reliability and quality and retains its value well.
With a nineteen year established and award-winning road riding history, coupled with four BSB championship titles and countless TT race wins to its name, as well as being and the first machine to break the 200mph barrier at the North West 200 and 130mph lap at the legendary Isle of Man TT, the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade really is a leader in its class.

Steve Martindale, General Manager of Honda (UK) Motorcycles commented, “The Fireblade has consistently proved itself as an incredible machine both on the road and track. The fact that it’s still as popular today as it was back in 1992 when it was introduced in its first incarnation is testament to the machine’s impressive credentials and, we’re delighted to know that motorcycle dealers across the industry hold the Fireblade with the same regard as our customers do.”

And until 31 March 2011, this awesome machine – available as standard or equipped with the world-first electronically controlled C-ABS designed specifically for sports bikes – is available with 0% APR finance over 36 months, making it more affordable as well as award-winning.

Honda’s acclaimed VFR1200F has won a prestigious industry award as the best sports touring motorcycle of 2010.

This great sports-touring machine, which was also in the top 10 best-selling motorcycles of 2010 overall, saw off strong competition before being announced as the Motor Cycle News 2010 Best Sports Tourer, but it was the inspirational Dual Clutch Transmission technology on the FD version of the VFR1200 which proved the final element to win over the judges.

The VFR1200F has already proved a big hit with riders since its introduction last Spring and headed the sales chart for its category in 2010. However, its versatility enables owners to use it with ease for a range of purposes from commuting to long-distance riding. The iconic V4 engine also rekindled the emotions of previous VFRs while the styling of the bike, with its all-new layered fairing and sleek lines, further hit the mark with customers.

Motor Cycle News holds its awards annually to reward excellence in the UK motorcycle industry, with 20 awards spread across many different categories. Speaking about the prestigious MCN award for ‘Sports Tourer of the Year’, the judges – headed up by the Editor, Marc Potter – had this to say: “The VFR1200F brings Honda’s new styling concept to the masses. The Dual Clutch Transmission push-button gear-change transforms the way we ride, making you think that changing gear with your foot should be firmly left in the past.”

In standard form, the VFR1200F operates with a traditional clutch/gearbox set-up operated by foot and hand, but Dual Clutch Transmission provides the rider with the option of two ‘automatic’ modes (D for relaxed fuel efficient operation and S-mode for sportier riding), as well as a manual transmission mode operated via a trigger-shift on the handlebar. This manual or automatic ‘option’ is the first time such a technology has been offered on a large capacity motorcycle and test rides have hailed the technology as ‘highly innovative’ and ‘seamless’.

Steve Martindale, General Manager of Honda (UK) Motorcycles commented, “It is always rewarding for Honda to be recognised within the industry with awards, and by our customers with top sales figures, and even more so for a bike such as the VFR1200F which pushed new boundaries in motorcycle design and technology.”

For 2011, a new luxurious Darkness Black Metallic with Digital Silver Metallic colour option is added to the 2010 colours of Candy Prominence Red, Seal Silver Metallic and Pearl Sunbeam White, to further emphasise the unique shapes and layers of the machine’s bodywork.

The VFR1200 also boasts a great range of colour matching luggage and accessories as optional extras, with the standard machine priced at £12,325 OTR and the VFR1200FD priced at £13,425 OTR.

The US-spec Honda Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept saloon made their world debuts at the North American International Auto Show today, providing the first official glimpse at the styling direction of the all-new model set to go on sale in the US this spring.

The Civic Si coupe and saloon Concepts are US-only design and will not be sold in the UK. The Civic for the European market will continue to be built in the UK and is not mechanically related to either of the US models, and their introduction does not influence future sales of the European hatchback.

The all-new US Civic range includes a saloon and a coupe with conventional petrol models, two sporty ‘Si’ performance versions, along with one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant. Collectively, the all-new Civic engine range offers a balance between fuel economy, low emissions and performance.

”The Civic is known for providing a balance of ‘just-right’ packaging, fun-to-drive character and outstanding fuel economy, at a price that even first-time buyers can afford,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. ”The redesigned Civic builds on this legacy and promises to be the best Civic yet.”

A number of chassis changes have been implemented, including: adjusting the recoil rate of the springs, changing the rear camber angles, altering the V-shape rear suspension brace and adjusting mounts. The amendments promise to deliver improved ride, handling and stability.

As well as these upgrades to suspension, Honda has added rear parking sensors to ES-model Insights and above, and updated the trim to smarten the interior. Dashboard and seat colours have also been changed to give a more uniform finish, and some plastics were improved. Chrome rings now surround air vents, and the doors have been given a silver garnish feature.

The changes made to the Insight were in direct response to the comments received from early customers and the media. The initial focus was on suspension, to which improvements have been made to address negative feedback on ride and comfort levels.

There are also two new paint options for Insight customers, with the introduction of Dynamic Blue Pearl and Carnelian Red Pearl.

Prices start at £16,325 for the SE model, but with Honda’s current Affordable Driving consumer offer, the hybrid is available at £14,995 OTR until the end of December. The highly-spec’d EX model with leather upholstery starts at £20,215 OTR.

This new trophy brings the total to four awards in as many weeks for the world’s first sporty hybrid.

The CR-Z’s blend of sporty looks, agile handling and good fuel efficiency allowed it to deal with the bustling back streets of the Third Ring district in China to win over the judges at Top Gear.

Top Gear summed up: “Of all the cars we’ve brought to China, CR-Z is far and away the one I feel most at home with – and most excited about. Compact, accessible and responsive, it’s a breeze to drive in this hectic and distracting place.”

This Top Gear honour joins the CR-Z’s fast-growing awards cabinet, which already consists of What Car? Green Awards’ Best Sports Car trophy as well as the more recent Japan Car of the Year 2010-2011 and Stuff magazine’s Eco Gadget of the Year title, plus Most Economic & Environment Friendly Sports HEV at the first RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge.

Dave Hodgetts, Managing Director for Honda (UK), commented: “To be recognised by a publication as well respected as Top Gear is a great achievement for the CR-Z and for Honda.

“We’re so pleased with the reception the CR-Z has received from the press, especially when you consider the strength of the competition out there. The car has only been on sale for nine months but we’re already looking for a bigger trophy cabinet!”

CR-Z is priced from £16,999 OTR and brings together a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, six-speed manual gearbox and Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist system – making a car that’s as fun to drive as it is efficient.

The popular Honda Jazz has been given a refresh, with a range of enhancements to both looks and driving dynamics. The revised Jazz range, which will include a hybrid model, goes on sale in the UK on 1 February 2011, with prices starting from £11,295 for the 1.2 S model and £15,995 for the Hybrid variant in HE trim.

The challenge for Honda’s engineers was to freshen and improve the car without compromising on the characteristics that make the Jazz so popular. But by enhancing the car’s strongest qualities, Honda has taken the Jazz on to the next stage, producing a car with greater flexibility, better looks, increased ride comfort and improved eco credentials.

While the revised car is just as cleverly packaged, fresh styling gives the Jazz a new appearance. New front and rear bumpers are the main parts to have influenced the look of the car. These have also been designed to reduce drag as the airflow passes over the Jazz’s body and to avoid turbulence when the airflow detaches from the rear. These styling improvements aid aerodynamic efficiency on all Jazz models helping the Cd figure to fall from 0.336 to 0.330.

Welcome back CVT
Constantly variable transmission, more commonly known as ‘CVT’, first appeared in the previous Jazz range and due to overwhelming customer demand Honda has brought it back along with a few clever improvements.

The CVT is an automatic transmission that keeps the engine in a rev range where the car is most efficient. As well as ensuring the whole power train of the Jazz is more efficient, it also offers the driver a smooth and effortless journey.

The CVT transmission is a standard feature on the Hybrid while it is available as an option on 1.4 litre petrol models, where, thanks to the improvements, it now matches the economy and emissions of the outgoing Jazz i-SHIFT, with a CO2 value starting at just 125g/km.

High specification and flexible cabin
Leather upholstery makes a very welcome appearance for the first time in the Jazz range. Along with the addition of chrome rings defining the air vents, instruments and climate controls across the dashboard, the leather trim gives a whole new premium feeling to the interior of the car and is an important option for customers downsizing from larger vehicles from other sectors. Leather seats are standard on the Jazz Hybrid in HX trim and available as a £1,250 option on the 1.4-litre petrol EX model.

Another change across the range is a new darker dashboard material which contrasts strongly with the orange and blue back lighting of the dials, gauges and displays across the dashboard. The orange backlighting colour is unique to the petrol powered variants, while the Hybrid version uses the blue lighting to differentiate the model from the rest of the range.

The Magic Seats, famed for their flexibility and multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations – are now even better with the addition of a reclining rear seat. The rear seats can now recline 73mms to increase rear passenger comfort.

Engine range expands with the introduction of hybrid technology
The established 1.2-litre and best-selling 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol engines remain in the Jazz range and to compliment the launch of the Hybrid variant, these two petrol engines have benefited from some small reductions in CO2 values and improved fuel economy. The 1.4-litre manual variant with manual transmission has emissions starting at 126 g/km down from 128 g/km and uses 51.4mpg on the combined cycle. The fuel sipping 1.2 litre engine uses 53.3mpg and also drops two grams of CO2 to 123g/km.

The Jazz Hybrid is an ultra-efficient car with a combined fuel consumption figure of 62.8 mpg – and with the same super-smooth electric system as the Insight, even more fuel is saved around town. While a CO2 output of just 104g/km makes the Jazz Hybrid the lowest of any automatic car in the B-segment.

Improved ride comfort and handling
The suspension on the 2011 Jazz features revised settings to increase ride comfort and improve handling. Already well respected for its lightness and manoeuvrability around town, the Jazz benefits from improvements to steering feel at higher speeds. Thanks to this continuous improvement the revised model has a much firmer, positive steering feel as speeds increase to inspire a confident driving experience.

All Jazz models, including the Hybrid version, share new sleek, projector style headlights adding to the sportier look. There are four new colours available across the petrol range – Azure Blue, Polished Metal, Urban Titanium and Ionized Bronze. The Hybrid version also benefits from Azure Blue plus two new colours – a vibrant Lime Green Metallic and Taffeta White.

Both vehicles are integral to the Honda Electric Mobility Network, the company’s comprehensive approach to reducing CO2 emissions through innovative products, energy-management and energy-production technologies.

The Fit EV Concept hints strongly at the direction and styling for Honda’s upcoming production Fit EV all-electric vehicle, which will be introduced to the U.S. and Japan in 2012. The all-new plug-in hybrid platform showcases Honda’s next-generation, two-motor hybrid technology set to debut in 2012.

“Honda’s long history with electromotive technologies has enabled us to understand customer requirements,” said Takanobu Ito, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO. “In Honda’s view, an electric vehicle must offer great utility and be fun to drive. Fit EV’s urban commuting capability will be a perfect addition to the full-function mobility of the plug-in hybrid and FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle.”

Honda Fit EV

The Fit EV is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the average metropolitan commuter and utilizes the same 5-passenger layout found in the popular Fit hatchback. When the Fit EV production model is introduced, it will be powered by a lithium-ion battery and coaxial electric motor.

The high-density motor, derived from the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle, delivers excellent efficiency and power while remaining quiet at high speeds. The Fit EV will have a top speed of 90 mph.

The Fit EV will achieve an estimated 100-mile driving range per charge using the US EPA LA41 city cycle (70 miles when applying EPA’s adjustment factor). Driving range can be maximized by use of an innovative 3-mode electric drive system, adapted from the 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid. The system allows the driver to select between Econ, Normal, and Sport to instantly and seamlessly change the driving experience to maximize efficiency or improve acceleration. While in Econ mode, practical driving range can increase by as much as 17 per cent, compared to driving in Normal mode, and up to 25 per cent compared to driving in Sport mode. Acceleration improves significantly when in Sport mode, generating performance similar to a vehicle equipped with a 2.0-litre petrol engine.

In addition to the 3-mode E-Drive system, the Fit EV will include several interactive coaching systems to assist the driver in maximizing battery range.

A special meter display advises the driver when to shut off air conditioning and other accessories to conserve battery power.

To help the driver manage the electric vehicle ownership experience, the Fit EV will have a standard connectivity system that allows the driver to stay connected through a smartphone and personal computer, or the Honda-exclusive interactive remote, while away from the vehicle. The pocket-friendly, interactive remote provides connectivity to the vehicle without the need for an internet connection or mobile phone signal. Through the connectivity system, drivers will be able to remotely view the vehicle’s state of charge, initiate charging and activate the air conditioning, even while connected to the grid, to reduce the drain on the battery at start-up. The mobile application and website also offers the ability to set charging notifications and alerts to optimize utility rates, and provides 24-hour roadside assistance, along with a public charging station locator. The Fit EV will come equipped with a standard Honda Satellite Linked Navigation System™ that includes a public charging-station locator capability.

The Fit EV is designed to be easy and convenient to charge. Battery recharging can be accomplished in less than 12 hours when using a conventional 120-volt outlet, and less than six hours when using a 240-volt outlet.

The Fit EV Concept displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show features an exclusive Deep Clear Blue Pearl exterior color and distinctive five-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with blue inserts. The Concept has unique LED headlights, a chrome front fascia, aerodynamic bumper, clear LED taillights and EV decals. Inside, the Fit EV Concept is outfitted in an eco-friendly gray bio-fabric on the seating surfaces.

Displayed alongside the Fit EV Concept at the show is a prototype Honda charging stand. To begin charging, the driver swipes a card in front of the screen and then connects the charger to the vehicle. The Honda charging stand provides a glimpse at the future of an electric-charging infrastructure that is easy to use and intuitive for consumers.
