When the Germans think of a quality car, there’s only one brand that now springs to mind – Hyundai. Leading German motoring magazine AutoBild, has awarded Hyundai the honour of first-place in its annual AutoBild Quality Report for 2010.

Hyundai eclipsed its rival Toyota and edged out local manufacturers BMW and Audi to take the prestigious award based on a comprehensive analysis of reliability, long-term quality and customer satisfaction.



AutoBild‘s annual list evaluates seven key criteria, each weighted equally, including feedback received from 9278 owners, manufacturer warranty provisioning, recall information, and data from Germany’s Technische Uberwachung Verein report (TÜV) based on no less than 7.5 million vehicle inspections. 

Considered to be one of the most respected industry quality surveys and endorsed by a fastidious German audience, the award further demonstrates the gains Hyundai has made in consistently improving the quality of its products, service and support available to its owners.

It’s not just in Germany that Hyundai’s quality has been applauded. Here in Britain, the i30 recently took first place in the Driver Power Top 100 survey, a customer satisfaction survey conducted by AutoBild’s sister magazine, Auto Express. This confirmed the findings of Which? consumer guide whose subscribers revealed i30 to be Britain’s most reliable medium-sized car.

The Hyundai i20 is getting blue on the inside and greener under the bonnet.

Minor changes to the aerodynamics and engine have resulted in a boost in fuel efficiency for all engines, while the interior is now more stylish and better equipped.

The best-selling 1.2-litre petrol engine, already one of the most efficient in the class, drops its emissions by 5g/km to 119g/km. This results in a tax disc costing just £30 and company car tax benefit-in-kind rates of just 10%.

Buyers wanting the extra power of the 1.4-litre version will see even greater savings, with the Style models dropping by 13g/km to just 129g/km. This results in a drop of two Vehicle Excise Duty bands and a 4.3mpg improvement.

The two diesel engines also see significant savings, with the 75PS model dropping by 6g/km to just 110g/km. The 90PS version gains a six-speed gearbox which helps it achieve a 7.2% improvement in fuel economy.

These improvements have been made possible by adding a small spoiler to the underneath of the car to improve airflow around the wheels, fitting an Eco Drive indicator in the instrument panel to suggest the best point to change gear, using low friction engine oil and an alternator management system.

Inside, there are two blue additions. Firstly, the dashboard and instrument illumination is now blue rather than red, bringing the i20 into line with larger Hyundai models.

Secondly, Bluetooth phone connectivity with voice recognition is now added as standard on all models except the entry-level Classic. 

The new i20 is available to order now, with prices starting at £9,520. All i20s are covered by a manufacturer-backed, unlimited mileage Five Year Warranty and are equipped with ESP and air conditioning as standard.

Hyundai’s pioneering concept car i-flow will be displayed at the world-renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed (1-4 July) in the UK.  The car, designed at the company’s European Technical Center, will be making its first appearance since impressing crowds on its global debut during the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Over 175.000 visitors are expected to attend the four-day festival, taking in high-performance supercars, motorsport vehicles and next-generation technology showcases such as the i-flow.  The Hyundai concept car will be a star attraction of Goodwood’s FoS-TECH Technology Pavilion, billed as offering “a step into the automotive future” with a strong emphasis on environmentally-sustainable transport.

Previewing a future D-segment contender from Hyundai, i-flow boasts Hyundai’s ground-breaking new design language and cutting-edge technology.  Its sleek, elegant lines not only create a bionic, futuristic shape but also contribute to exceptional aerodynamics.  The drag coefficient of 0.25Cd helps to reduce CO₂ output to just 85g/km and fuel consumption to only 3l/100km.  Hyundai’s first diesel-electric hybrid powertrain, featuring the company’s new 1,7-liter engine, plays a key role in delivering such an impressive CO₂ emissions figure. 

Further advancements can be found inside the i-flow cabin.  The application of next-generation materials and technologies, developed in cooperation with BASF, breaks the mould of traditional car interiors.  Innovative features include the ability of the main interface to recognize gestural inputs along its fascia-wide display.

The glossy ‘Liquid Metal’ finish – also developed in partnership with BASF – adds to the visual impact of i-flow’s exterior, giving a distinctive character to the car.

A cab driver in Northampton found his choice of Hyundai i800 was ideal when he got a booking to collect a fare from Barcelona in the recent volcanic ash flights ban.

The eight-seat Hyundai i800 MPV meant the journey to collect a group of stranded holidaymakers and their luggage from Spain was a breeze, even with two drivers on board.

“We got the call at 9.30am on Tuesday and were on the road within an hour to collect four people,” said i800 owner Garry Smith. “I took my son Ben so we could share the driving and booked the Eurotunnel crossing on route. When the passengers heard what car we were in they asked if we could take six people which because of the car, we were happy to do.”

Stopping only to change drivers every few hours, re-fuel and answer calls of nature, Garry and Ben arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday morning. They didn’t even turn the ignition off before they were loaded up and heading back.

After the 2,500 mile round trip, Garry and Ben got back to the UK on Thursday morning with the cab’s meter reading a whopping £4,600.05. However Garry billed the group a pre-agreed £1,850, which worked out at just over £300 per passenger. “It wouldn’t really be fair to charge them the meter rate,” said Garry, who bought his i800 from Kingsley Hyundai in Bedford last year.

Garry originally picked the i800 because he specialises in executive transport and longer journeys. He wasn’t surprised to be called on for the rescue run as he narrowly missed out on a job to Geneva just before the Barcelona trip came up. However he added this journey was his biggest trip ever.

The results are in and there’s a shock in store – Hyundai’s i30 has scooped the prize as the UK’s most reliable car!

It beat the 2009 winner, the Jaguar XF – which finished second this year – and the Skoda Octavia, which finished in third place. And the result is set to cause a shockwave of respect, jealousy and envy from the world’s car makers.

The i30 shot straight into the coveted number one slot in the Driver Power Top 100 –the first time a Korean maker has won in nine years of the survey.

Completed by over 23,000 drivers, Driver Power is the definitive poll on car reliability and satisfaction.

While it was good news for Hyundai, Ford’s current Focus came resolutely mid-table – in 51^st place. And it was an even worse story for Vauxhall. Its previous-generation Corsa supermini finished at the bottom of the Top 100, while the MkIV Astra was just one place above it, in 99^th position.

However, it was Peugeot that walked away with the wooden spoon in the manufacturer countdown, thanks to poor performances by its 307 and 207 models.

A strong showing from the Octavia saw Skoda scoop the overall win in the manufacturer category, with Toyota luxury brand Lexus in second. The i30 helped Hyundai make the biggest overall leap, jumping 12 places to finish sixth.

Auto Express editor in chief David Johns said: “Congratulations to Hyundai. This is a huge breakthrough for the brand. Over the years, owners have told us what good value its cars are. This is the final proof that Hyundais can now match that with real all-round reliability and satisfaction.”

Hats off to Skoda! Ousting Lexus from the top spot last year, Skoda has held onto the gold medal in 2010 thanks to the excellent Fabia and Octavia models. With well-recieved newcomers such as the Yeti and Superb, we can only expect the firm to do the same in 2011.

Running costs – Fiat Panda

There’s no doubt about it – if you want to keep an eye on the pennies, the Fiat Panda is the clear winner. Drivers love its fuel-efficient engines, low insurance costs and servicing bills that result in a smile rather than a wince.

Reliability – Toyota Prius

It’s had a tough time of late but the Driver Power results speak volumes – Toyota Prius owners have had no problems to report. That’s remarkable in a car that packs so much hi-tech equipment.

Just jump in and go – that’s the message the Prius sends out. Even though it has a complex drivetrain, Toyota’s hybrid is a breeze to drive, providing light steering, simple controls and a fine view of the road.

Here’s proof when it comes to practicality, you don’t need an MPV. The Discovery 3 has more ‘throw it all and go’ ability than any other to in the Driver Power Top 100, thanks to its vast size, seven-seater layout and split tailgate.

Hewn-from-granite and likely to last just as long, the previous generation Lexus IS is the Driver Power Build Quality champion. Drivers say their cars are still as rattle free as the day they left the factory.

In the shorter term, Hyundai is also bringing new style to the C-segment with a revised version of its i30.

Entering production in March, the new i30 incorporates a wide range of improvements in design, specification and competitiveness.

The i30 builds on the strengths of the current i30 range, to keep the model fresh and desirable. The new-look i30 does not stray far from the original design, and instead merely accentuates the car’s aesthetic qualities.

The redesigned radiator grille and air intakes bring the i30 in line with Hyundai’s new-style corporate identity, epitomised by the hexagonal frontal form. A reshaped, lower bumper and more angular fog light recesses continue the visual enhancement around the front end. The redesigned chrome garnish housing the Hyundai logo completes the more dynamic new look. The refresh carries on into the flanks, where extended side skirts and rear bumper add a sense of strength to the car’s contemporary profile.

To complete the upgrade, the new i30 comes with Hyundai’s ‘Triple5’ package, including an enhanced five-year warranty with five year’s roadside recovery.

Blue Drive takes i10, i20 and i30 under 100g/km

Hyundai has revealed its latest eco-focused Blue Drivevehicles. Four new cars have resulted from the company’s leading-edge program: the i10 blue, i20 blue, i30 blue and ix35 blue.

The eco-friendly variants incorporate improvements in emissions without compromising performance, reliability or driver satisfaction, making Blue Drive models a realistic solution for modern motorists.

All employ the latest energy-efficient powertrain technology. The new, downsized 1.0-litre Kappa petrol and 1.7-litre U2 diesel engines, for example, are coupled with high-performance, low-friction engine oil, to considerably reduce driveline friction. Dual continuously variable valve timing, improved combustion efficiency, gear ratio optimisation, and engine control optimisation to increase engine efficiency.

A noticeable change from the driver’s perspective is the application of a Hyundai-specific Idle Stop & Go (ISG) system. This cuts the engine when the car is stationary and restarts it when the clutch pedal is depressed.

With ISG, an alternator management system is added to maximise energy regeneration during braking and disconnecting the alternator when it’s not needed.

It’s not just the engines which are more efficient. To minimise drag, the Blue Drive models have improved aerodynamics and lower rolling resistance.

Under body panels have been installed on all models to smooth airflow under the car and certain models also feature reductions in brake-pad drag on the discs. Wheels are also fitted with low rolling resistance tyres, inflated to a higher pressure.

Through such innovations, engineers have succeeded in lowering the CO2 emission levels of the i10, i20, and i30 blue models to the sub-100g/km range.

The i10 blue, which goes into production at the end of 2010, employs a new and extremely efficient 1.0-litre version of the Kappa petrol engine, which produces 69PS at a lower rpm level of 6.200 rpm while generating 94 Nm of torque. By tweaking the aerodynamics and refinements to the powertrain, CO2 emissions in the i10 blue have been reduced to just 99g/km.

The i20 blue features the U2 1.4-litre diesel engine, designed and engineered at the R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and produces 75PS at a lower rpm level of 4.000, while generating 220 Nm of torque. The power train is mated to the latest six- speed manual transmission. Producing just 98g/km of CO2 emissions, the i20 blue is scheduled to go into production in 2011.

The i30 blue uses the U2 1.6-litre engine, which produces 90PS at 4.000 rpm, while generating 240 Nm of torque. CO2 emissions of just 98g/km and 99 g/km for the hatchback and estate models, respectively, will save customers tax and fuel.

Hyundai’s ix35 will cost from just £16,495 when it goes on sale on March 25th, making the stylish crossover a real alternative for buyers considering a conventional hatchback.

In fact, a combination of the low purchase price, economical running costs and high residuals mean that the ix35 is likely to cost less to run than mainstream family cars and MPVs with comparable engines.

Despite the price, the ix35 range has equipment levels that no rival can even dream of matching. This makes it attractive not just to private buyers, but also means company car drivers can choose an ix35 and actually pay less tax than on a mainstream hatchback or MPV.

The entry-level ix35 Style model is less expensive to buy than a basic Ford Focus, yet includes such features as 17-inch alloy wheels, ESP, air conditioning, built-in Bluetooth phone connectivity, heated front and rear seats, electric heated door mirrors with integrated LED side repeaters, leather steering wheel and gearknob, reverse parking sensors and a trip computer.

The Premium model adds 18-inch alloys, a double-length panoramic glass sunroof, automatic headlights, cruise control, dual zone climate control, electric folding door mirrors, keyless entry with engine start/stop button, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, part-leather upholstery and roof rails. Options include full leather seats, touch-screen sat-nav and a reversing camera.

What’s more, all ix35’s are backed up by Hyundai’s famous five-year warranty and a 10-year anti-perforation corrosion warranty, meaning that what appears attractive in the showroom will remain just as appealing for years to come.

This package has meant that the ix35 has just been given a stunning set of residual value figures by industry experts CAP.

The 2.0CRDi Style 2WD, which is expected to be the big seller of the range, achieves a 43 percent residual value figure after 3yr/30k miles. These figures match the new Nissan Qashqai and beat the likes of VW’s Tiguan and the brand new Peugeot 3008.The residual for the Premium 2WD is even better than the Style, achieving 45% after 3yr/30k miles.

The ix35 range will be made even stronger from this autumn when two new smaller engines join the range – a 1.6 petrol with direct injection technology and a new 1.7 diesel offering supermini-rivalling emissions and fuel economy.

Leading industry publication AM Magazine presented the prestigious award of Carmaker of the Year to Hyundai, at its annual ceremony in Birmingham this week.

A panel of industry experts led by AM Editor Jeremy Bennett gave the accolade to Hyundai over rivals Ford, Land Rover, Jaguar and Kia.

Jeremy said; “With the newly-opened factory in Eastern Europe pumping out high quality vehicles and dealers selling them at the right price to a consumer base looking for alternative motoring choices, it was only a matter of time before Hyundai entered the mainstream”.

An all-new concept car is set to catch the ‘i’ of visitors to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Hyundai has chosen the event to reveal the i-flow, a stylish saloon that previews the look of its new D-segment contender.

Styled at the company’s European design headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany, i-flow is expected to attract much attention, thanks to its striking appearance – the latest product of the company’s evocative new form language, ‘fluidic sculpture’. The name i-flow reflects the exceptionally aerodynamic shape and the flowing lines of the concept car’s eye-catching styling, and retains the ‘i’ prefix of Hyundai’s established nomenclature.

The i-flow incorporates numerous new technologies from chemical company BASF, ranging from innovative lightweight materials to solar cells, to assist in reducing weight and improving energy efficiency.

Hyundai is set to build on its industry-leading scrappage success with ground-breaking schemes which will help even more customers afford a new Hyundai.

These include Trade & Upgrade, which allows buyers the same £2,000 part exchange allowance as scrappage customers even after the government scheme ends, and Happy Returns, which offers Hyundai’s existing scrappage customers the chance to swap to a new ‘10’ registration in March for as little as £499.

“We have learnt some valuable lessons from the 33,000 people who have bought cars from us under the scrappage scheme” said Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai’s managing director in the UK. “They love transparent pricing. They hate haggling. And if they see a good deal they will snap it up. What we are offering post scrappage will build on this experience and will change the way cars are bought in the UK for ever.”

Trade & Upgrade will offer the 6.4 million owners of seven to 10 year old cars in Britain the same £2,000 allowance offered to scrappage customers.

Unlike similar schemes from other manufacturers, Trade & Upgrade allows buyers to choose any new car from the Hyundai range, not just the more expensive models.

It’s not only old car drivers who can benefit. Happy Returns will allow those who were savvy enough to buy a Hyundai using scrappage another chance to pick up an unbeatable deal and own another new Hyundai.

Owners who bought a new i10, i20 and i30 last year will be invited to swap it for a brand new Hyundai wearing the new ‘10’ registration. The swap can be made any time up until the car’s first anniversary, saving the customer the cost of the first service and tax disc renewal. The new car will of course also have a new five year warranty.

The customer’s contribution to the deal will be £499 for an i10, £599 for an i20 or £749 for an i30. Customers will be able to trade up and down the range if they want to switch to a different car or add options.

Once the price of a service and tax disc are taken into account, it could mean that the ‘cost to change’ for an i10 customer could be around £250 – that’s just £20 per month in depreciation. For the i20, buyers will be upgrading to a 2010 model year car with ESP as standard and an improved interior.

The scheme has been made possible because of the exceptional residual values of Hyundai ‘i’ cars and the high demand for quality used cars in the Hyundai network.

There is a further treat in store for existing Hyundai customers. All 33,000 buyers who made use of scrappage will be sent a ‘Friends and Family’ voucher which will allow them to give relations and acquaintances something more than just good car-buying advice. They will also be able to offer a £250 voucher to spend on any new Hyundai.

“Our scrappage customers have an expectation of what a Hyundai will be like, and they are amazed at the quality and technology they are getting” said Whitehorn. “As a result they have become our best advocates. We want to reward them and allow thousands more drivers to own a new Hyundai.”

The Santa Fe also features six standard airbags, including side air curtain airbags. To make the 2010 Santa Fe even safer, Hyundai has added rollover sensors to the side curtain airbags.

All Santa Fe trim levels come standard with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry’s most effective life-saving technologies. NHTSA studies show SUVs equipped with ESC experience 63 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes.

Front and rear disc brakes are standard and are coupled with a four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Brake Assist, a technology providing maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected. The system also uses Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which automatically equalizes the braking force to the front and rear axles, based on the vehicle loading conditions.

All seating positions feature three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. Front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during a rear collision.

By popular demand, Hyundai’s factory-installed navigation system featuring a high-resolution touch-screen and voice command technology is now available on all Santa Fe models. This new touch screen navigation system also offers a rearview camera and XM NavTraffic. In addition, Bluetooth, iPod®/USB auxiliary inputs and steering wheel audio controls are now standard in all models.

The 2010 Santa Fe is one of the most package-efficient crossovers on the market. Soft-touch, high-quality materials, low-gloss surfaces and zero-tolerance fits are used throughout the interior, as are color-keyed seat belt buckles and cupholder inserts to add more design harmony to the inside cabin. New darker interior colors and wood grain have been added.

PURPOSE-BUILT PLATFORM

The Santa Fe rides on a purpose-built unibody crossover platform with a 106.3-inch wheelbase. This chassis delivers a wonderful ride, handling and balance that discerning crossover buyers are looking for, along with interior amenities just right for most families. This stiff body structure provides the basis for both a more refined ride and more agile handling. Benefiting from a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, the i20 Edition looks after its occupants with standard ESP, active front seat head restraints and six airbags.

The i10 Edition, priced at £8,425 on-the-road, arrives with a level of standard equipment that puts many bigger cars to shame. A new world-beating engine, more equipment and a stylish new look – all at a lower price. The 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe looks too good to be true.

But buyers looking for a big, practical family car can stop pinching themselves, as Hyundai has confirmed the amazing news that its 2010 Santa Fe will actually be cheaper than the car it replaces, despite a raft of improvements.

The headline news is the Santa Fe’s world-class new powertrain, offering an unrivalled combination of performance and economy. It means that the Santa Fe is now comparable on price and emissions with MPVs and estate cars, and comfortably powers ahead of SUV rivals.

Much more than a simple nip-and-tuck, the new Santa Fe also benefits from subtly enhanced exterior styling and improved safety. Despite this, Hyundai has actually managed to make the list price even more competitive – with obvious benefits to private buyers and company car drivers alike.

Styling

Revisions to the design of the Santa Fe are concentrated on the finer details. At the front, the black two bar grille is replaced by chrome-edged three bar version, while revised headlight clusters sit above a new, more sculpted bumper which also houses new fog lights in a black surround. The rear gains a new bumper that curves neatly into more distinctive light clusters, while trapezoidal exhaust pipes and new alloy wheel designs improve the car’s stance and presence on the road.

On the inside carbon black trim replaces the previous wood finishes to highlight the Santa Fe’s modern feel, and the standard single CD/RDS radio now comes with an AUX/USB connection with full iPod control.

The range has been simplified, with a two-model range now comprising of entry-level Style and higher spec Premium. Style models are packed with standard equipment: 17-inch alloy wheels, reversing sensors, ESP and air conditioning are among the standard features, while moving up to Premium adds 18-inch wheels, dual climate control, heated leather seats with electric adjustment for the driver and automated lights and wipers.

The Santa Fe retains its outstanding MPV-rivalling practicality, with the even more versatile seven-seat option available for a modest £750 on both Style and Premium models. In either version it offers a huge 969 litres of load space in a five-seat configuration – double that of some its rivals – rising to a van-like 2,247 with all the seats folded. This is an increase of 34 litres over the previous model. Seven-seat versions are also fitted with a self-levelling rear suspension set up and rear privacy glass as standard, while five-seat versions get a substantial under-floor storage area.

Powertrain

Stronger, leaner and more refined
At the heart of the rejuvenated Santa Fe is a new 2.2-litre direct injection ‘R’ diesel engine that demonstrates major improvements over the already-impressive outgoing version. This new all-aluminium 2,199cc powerplant offers up a class-leading 194bhp  – more than the six-cylinder units offered in some rival vehicles – backed by a mighty 311lb.ft of torque (322lb.ft when specified with an automatic gearbox) which amounts to improvements of 26% and 27% respectively on the previous engine.

These huge strides in power and efficiency give the Santa Fe an advantage over a wide range of competitors. With the six-speed manual transmission fitted, the Santa Fe can sprint to 62mph from rest in 9.8 seconds, giving it hot-hatch like acceleration. Although ultimate performance is not usually top of family 4×4 buyers’ priorities it is nice to know that it is the fastest seven-seat SUV you can buy for under £35,000.

That doesn’t come at the expense of economy however, as the combined cycle figure now breaks the 40mpg barrier and emissions have fallen significantly to 176g/km, moving it down on the Vehicle Excise Duty to Band I. These figures also put the Santa Fe ahead of the competition, with no seven-seat SUV or MPV coming close to its combination of economy and performance. In fact the Santa Fe can even beat the economy figures of the entry level Vauxhall Zafira and diesel Ford Galaxy while producing more torque than a Porsche 911!

These impressive figures are helped by a number of clever engineering developments, including the sophisticated six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes and an alternator management system that disengages when not required in order to save fuel. Drivers looking to maximise the efficiency benefits are helped by the ‘Eco Drive Indicator’ on automatic versions to monitor fuel efficiency, while manual versions have an optimum gear shift point indicator built into the trip computer display.

Another advantage of the new engine is an increased towing capacity, with a maximum braked towing weight of 2,500kg, up 300kg on the outgoing model.

Running costs

The new Santa Fe proves that exceptional performance and a high specification need not come at the expense of running costs or a sky-high purchase price. Despite the improvements in equipment levels and drivability, prices are actually lower compared with the outgoing model.

The entry-level five-seat manual 2.2 CRDi Santa Fe Style starts at £21,495 (at the higher 17.5% VAT rate).

Significant improvements in economy and emissions have pulled back running costs for the Santa Fe and service intervals have been doubled to 20,000 miles, helping to slash maintenance bills. Company car drivers with P11Ds to consider will find the lower price and CO2 levels reduces their contribution further still, with the Santa Fe dropping from 29% to 26% tax rates – saving company car drivers hundreds in tax every year. Indeed the Santa Fe is not just more efficient at tax avoidance than other 4×4 rivals; it can also now be a real alternative to MPVs and estate cars.

Residual values are also expected to improve still further due to the enhanced specification and lower prices, placing it amongst the best in class for retained value. And of course, the Santa Fe enjoys the legendary five years unlimited mileage warranty for the ultimate peace of mind.

The hugely successful Hyundai i30 range has been given a major update for 2010. New engines and trim levels will make Hyundai’s big seller even more accessible and further reduce running costs for private and company drivers alike.

As a further bonus, Intelligent Stop & Go technology (ISG) will be introduced as a special order option, bringing impressive tax and fuel savings to both private and company buyers.

A new model in the range – named Classic – will be the new entry level i30, available with the popular 1.4-litre petrol engine and a new 1.6-litre CRDi diesel with 90PS. Both have an impressive specification including ESP, air conditioning and electric front windows. The Classic 1.4 costs just £12,000 (at the new higher 17.5 % VAT rate) while the Classic 1.6 CRDi costs £12,950, reducing the price of the cheapest i30 diesel by £1,140.

The new Comfort model costs just £700 more than the Classic and adds electric rear windows, steering wheel audio controls and – new for 2010 – a leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob plus 16′ alloy wheels. The Comfort is expected to be the biggest seller in the i30 range and is available with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and a 115PS 1.6-litre diesel. Both 1.6-litre engines are also available with an automatic gearbox.

The price of the range-topping Premium has been realigned, making it up to £1,200 cheaper than its predecessor. Now available from £14,750, the Premium package still features a high specification such as 17′ alloy wheels, reversing sensors and climate control. The full leather upholstery of the 2009 model year car is replaced by half leather trim, although full leather is still a £650 option – which still makes a 2010 Premium with full leather over £500 cheaper than before.

These prices mean obvious savings for private buyers – the i30 1.6 petrol Comfort is a massive £4,670 cheaper than the entry-level 1.6 Ford Focus. But company car drivers will also find they can save hundreds in tax by choosing an i30 over rival hatchbacks thanks to lower list prices and emissions levels.

For those wanting even bigger savings, Intelligent Stop & Go technology (ISG) has also been introduced as a £200 option on all i30 models with manual transmission for the first time, giving improvements in fuel economy of up to 10 percent on the hatchback and 14 percent on the Estate.

Adding ISG drops CO2 emissions of the new Classic 1.6 CRDi 90PS from 115 to 110 g/km, allowing businesses to write down 100 percent of their capital write-down allowance in the first year. For drivers wanting more carrying capacity, the CO2 emissions of the Comfort 1.6 CRDi 115PS Estate shrink from 124 to 119 g/km, saving customers £85 per year in road tax and dropping company car drivers from 18 percent to 13 percent benefit-in-kind.

The new i30 range will officially go on sale from 4th January 2010, with orders being taken now.

The most sophisticated and luxurious Hyundai ever has just been launched in South Korea. The long-wheelbase version of the Equus saloon is the largest and most expensive vehicle in the Hyundai line-up, rivalling the likes of the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes S-Class. Prices for the Equus Limousine start at approximately £70,000 and go up to £80,000.

Passenger comfort was at the forefront of the design criteria and as a result the new model offers passengers unparalleled levels of interior space and luxury. The vehicle is longer than major competitors by as much as 310 mm, with up to 376 mm more backseat legroom.

The new model is fitted with the most powerful engine ever built for a Hyundai production car – a 5.0-litre V8. With a maximum output of 400PS and a torque rating of 500Nm, the Equus outperforms competitors such as the Lexus LS460L by 20PS and the Mercedes S500L by 12PS.

It’s not just the driver that will find something substantial under his right foot. Rear passengers will find they have the world’s first power-driven footrest, seat leg support, relax posture control and a massage system. This sort of comfort isn’t usually found anywhere outside of an aircraft’s first class lounge.

Hyundai has also developed a bulletproof version of the car and has delivered three units to the Korean President. Hyundai is the first Korean company to develop a bulletproof car with its own technology.

The Equus is primarily aimed at Hyundai’s domestic Korean market. Potential export markets are currently being assessed, but the car is unlikely to be imported to the UK officially.

Official car sales figures released today are set to send shockwaves through the industry. Hyundai sold more cars to retail customers in August than any other brand, overtaking Ford and Vauxhall.

The figures, which would have seemed inconceivable a few months ago, show that Hyundai’s overall sales for the month rose 323% compared to August last year to 3,737. It gives Hyundai a record overall market share of 5.6%.

The i10 city car has been the company’s biggest success, with 2,431 finding homes in August. This makes it Britain’s third best selling car, relegating the Vauxhall Corsa to fourth place.

Remove fleet sales from the equation and the i10’s achievement is even more impressive. The city car is not only the most popular model bought by retail customers, but it outsold the second placed car by a factor of more than two to one!

Hyundai’s managing director, Tony Whitehorn, said: ‘These are truly historic figures for Hyundai. There are now thousands of happy new Hyundai drivers, and these owners’ recommendations will become our best advertising. It will ensure that Hyundai’s success continues years to come.’

Although the August figures are amazing, many Hyundai buyers chose to delay registering their new cars until September, allowing them to have a car wearing the new ‘59’ registration numbers. This means that Hyundai’s sales figures this month are set to be even more impressive.

‘We are well on the way to making September the best ever month for sales in the company’s history’ said Mr Whitehorn. ‘Our dealers have taken on an average of 20% more staff to cope with demand.’

Hyundai has released the first undisguised images of its new ix35, an all-new C-segment crossover that showcases Hyundai’s distinctive new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. The ix35 replaces the popular Tucson – one of Europe’s best-selling SUVs – and will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Design cues seen on ix35 will be carried over to other new Hyundai models, most notably the pronounced hexagonal grille which will become a recognisable family attribute.
The ix35 also has a smaller footprint than C-segment hatchbacks and MPVs, meaning it will also appeal to buyers who are seeking a more stylish alternative to conventional cars. The sleeker styling contributes to enhanced aerodynamics. This, combined with more refined powertrain technology, enables ix35 to deliver markedly better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than rival SUVs and compete head on in terms of running costs with mainstream hatchbacks.
