Just five months after the successful launch in the UK of the internationally acclaimed new Grand Cherokee 4×4, Jeep has announced pricing of the eagerly awaited high performance SRT8 and premium Overland Summit versions.

Both these new vehicles, which are set to take the Grand Cherokee range to new heights of luxury, performance and refinement, are available to order from UK Jeep dealers now.

Grand Cherokee SRT8

The best-performing Jeep ever, the exciting new Grand Cherokee SRT8 (Street and Racing Technology- the sports arm of Chrysler Group) offers a unique blend of legendary capability and utility, head-turning SRT performance and an impressive suite of advanced technologies. Delivering outstanding driving performance in all conditions, and complemented by key SRT attributes – including functional, performance-orientated styling, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking and race-inspired interior appointments – the SRT8 broadens the Grand Cherokee line-up and builds upon its successful launch in the UK.

Designed and constructed using the proven Street and Racing Technology formula that raises vehicle performance to astonishing levels, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, has a top speed of 160 mph, and brakes from 60-0 mph in just 116 feet.

Powering the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler Group’s awe-inspiring new 6424cc HEMI V8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 hp and 465 lb ft. of torque – an improvement of 50 horsepower and 45 lb ft. torque over the 6.1 litre HEMI V8 it replaces.

Fuel Saver Technology works by seamlessly alternating between smooth, high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed, and a sporty V8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimises fuel economy when V8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 also comes with 45 specific safety and security features including active head restraints, adaptive cruise control, (cruising speed to maintain a preset distance – short, medium or long – between your vehicle and the one ahead. The system uses radar to detect moving vehicles immediately ahead and modifies cruising speed if necessary), forward collision warning, (which uses front sensors to gauge relative speeds and detect when you might be approaching another car too rapidly) and rain brake support (which periodically dries the brake discs in wet conditions).

At £58,995 OTR, the 2012 SRT8 is the ultimate performance SUV and slots perfectly into the line-up as the premium sports performance version of this celebrated brand’s flagship Grand Cherokee model.

Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Overland Summit

The New Overland Summit model elevates Grand Cherokee to new levels of luxury and refinement in the premium sport-utility vehicle sector. It is priced at £44,795.

Available in a new, exclusive Rugged Brown paint scheme, with a unique fully chromed grille and fog lamp bezels, and riding on 20-inch bright, polished aluminium wheels, the Overland Summit takes all the features of the current top-of-the-range Overland, and adds even more refinement and equipment.

Powered by a 237 hp, 2987cc V6 CRD diesel engine, the Overland Summit’s real wood and distinctive polished trim surround passengers with the highest levels of craftsmanship. Wood trim is also used on the leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel.

The Grand Cherokee Overland Summit boasts a black lower and saddle upper interior trim colour, along with saddle-coloured Nappa heated and ventilated leather seats – with perforated inserts, accent piping and unique stitching – and Berber floor mats with black and chestnut accent binding.

Among the huge list of standard equipment on the Overland Summit is the Advanced Warning System and Adaptive Cruise Control group, which consists of Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-path detection systems.

“The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is already one of the industry’s talking points, not only with our customers, but with the media too,” says Nigel Land, brand director, Jeep Chrysler UK. “So we are delighted to be bringing these two amazing new variants here. They will broaden our offering still further to create a highly accomplished range of 4×4 vehicles that offer all that’s best in high-level sports utility vehicles.

“This will be a truly comprehensive Grand Cherokee line-up covering luxury, quality, craftsmanship, technology and sports performance, and all the very best in Jeep 4×4 expertise.”

The new high-performance Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 makes its European debut at the 2011 International Frankfurt Motor Show. Combining legendary Jeep capability and utility with head-turning ‘Street and Racing Technology’ performance, the SRT8 is powered by an all-new 6.4-litre HEMI® V-8 engine, producing 470 bhp and 630 Nm of torque, and making the new flagship model the most powerful, high-performance Jeep vehicle ever produced.

Available in Jeep UK dealerships from the first quarter of 2012, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 features advanced new active damping suspension, which is managed by the new Selec-Track system to optimise road handling, in addition to a new system which allows Fuel Saver Technology to ensure a 13-percent improvement in motorway fuel efficiency and a 450 mile range. Meanwhile, the lowered profile, race-inspired interior and exclusive SRT steering wheel with mounted paddle shifters give a performance-orientated feel to the Jeep flagship model.

Designed and built using the proven SRT (Street Racing Technology) formula that raises performance to dramatic levels, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 accelerates from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range, and has a top speed of over 155 mph.

Powering the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler Group’s all-new 6.4-litre HEMI® V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 bhp and 630 Nm of torque – an improvement of 50 horsepower and 61 Nm torque over the 6.1-litre HEMI V-8 it replaces.

For 2011, all Jeep Grand Cherokee models boast improved and refined on-road ride thanks in part to the vehicle’s body structure – torsional stiffness was improved 146 percent versus the previous model. However, Jeep engineers have improved on-road handling even further, with the Grand Cherokee SRT8 featuring a new SRT-tuned, active damping suspension managed by the new Jeep Selec-Track system – allowing drivers to manually choose between five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions.

In the UK, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will become available in one specification. On top of the unique SRT8 items, standard equipment will offer some of the most technologically advanced features available today, including: Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel drive transfer system, Command-View® dual-pane sunroof, Uconnect satellite navigation system, adaptive cruise control, 20-inch forged aluminium wheels, blind-spot monitoring with Rear Cross-path detection and new SRT high-performance vented Brembo brakes.

The exterior of the SRT8 is characterised by a lowered (3 cm), more aggressive profile and reveals the unmistakable Jeep personality and unique SRT DNA. LED multi-function daytime running lamps amplify the look of the high performance Jeep, while exclusive SRT features add to the masculine image – complemented by hood mounted dual black heat extractors for added engine cooling. At the rear, the SRT performance influence continues with a new liftgate spoiler, air diffuser and a dual-sport exhaust system featuring 10 cm exhaust tail pipes.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee’s refined, exclusive interior takes on a performance feel in SRT8 form with race-inspired technology and SRT-exclusive appointments including carbon fibre accent inserts, paddle-shift gear controls, Electronic Vehicle Information Centre (EVIC) and new SRT-styled Nappa leather and suede seats.

Jeep Wrangler becomes even more capable both on- and off-road for 2012, courtesy of an all-new, more fuel efficient and more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine, and a new five-speed automatic transmission – both of which it shares with the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and five-speed automatic transmission dramatically enhance Wrangler’s on-road driving performance – delivering up to 21 miles per gallon, 40 percent more power and 10 percent more torque – while also taking the vehicle’s legendary off-road capability
to a new level.

“Jeep Wrangler has a new heart but retains the same soul for 2012,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Our new 3.6-liter V-6 engine gives the ever-capable Wrangler a completely new, more refined on-road driving experience – complete with more fuel efficiency, power and torque.

“Available in 2-door and 4-door models and boasting an untouchable combination of efficient design, open-air freedom, significant towing capability, improved real-world drivability, and unique 4×4 systems that deliver unmatched off-road prowess, Jeep Wrangler once again resets the benchmark and offers consumers the ultimate vehicle for any driving adventure,” Manley added.

Chrysler Group’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine – winner of the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines award – delivers 285 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 N•m), with greater fuel efficiency. The improvement, when compared to the previous 3.8-liter V-6 engine, is 40 percent in horsepower and 10 percent in torque. Additionally, for refined shifting and greater performance, the Jeep Wrangler migrates from a four-speed to a new five-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Jeep Wrangler also features the company’s first application of a manual transmission to the Pentastar V-6.

The Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited will continue to be available in four models: Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon. Combined with an all-new interior for 2011, the 2012 Jeep Wrangler is virtually all-new over the past two model years and will excite core Jeep followers while appealing to new customers.

Engineering
The 2012 Jeep Wrangler delivers unmatched off-road capability with legendary four-wheel drive and is produced with more than seven decades of 4×4 engineering experience. Wrangler continues to offer a body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension system, live axles, electronic lockers, and is one of the few mid-size SUVs that offers a six-speed manual transmission – in addition to its new five-speed automatic transmission.

The new automatic transmission benefits the 2012 Wrangler as much as the new engine with more refined shifting and gear selection. By increasing the number of speeds from four to five, the transmission allows the engine to operate in a more efficient RPM range, which helps increase fuel economy. More speeds also enable the engine to remain in the torque curve, increasing acceleration. The 2012 Jeep Wrangler boasts a 25-percent improvement in 0–60 mph time, which is now 8.4 seconds. Also, a lower first-gear ratio in the new automatic transmission gives the Wrangler more off-road capability via a lower overall crawl ratio.

Jeep Wrangler is now available with more axle gear ratios allowing customers to optimize fuel economy and/or vehicle capability. Wrangler is available with 3.21, 3.73 or 4.10 ratios depending on model. Also, Wrangler offers towing capability up to 3,500 lbs.

A best-in-class approach angle of 44.6 degrees, breakover angle of 25.5 degrees and best-in-class departure angle of 40.6 degrees, helps the Jeep Wrangler scale the toughest terrain.

The capable driveline of the Sport and Sahara models include a Dana 30 front axle and Dana
44 rear axle. The Command-Trac® NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case, features a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. In addition, an optional Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip in low-traction environments such as sand, mud or snow.

The Wrangler Rubicon model features heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles and the Rock-Trac® NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio. Rubicon also includes electric front and rear locking differentials, disconnecting front sway bar and 32-inch tires, taking the Wrangler to the highest level of capability.

Design
In 2011, Jeep introduced an all-new interior to Wrangler that combines rich styling, versatility, comfort and improved feature use. Highlights include upgraded materials, automatic temperature controls, heated seats, power mirrors and steering wheel controls for vehicle systems. Larger rear windows are engineered for greater visibility. A USB port connects to the media center, 12-volt accessory outlets are located throughout the Wrangler and a 115-volt AC outlet is available to power select two-pronged home electronics.

Jeep Wrangler’s signature features include classic round headlamps, seven-slot grille, trapezoid wheel flares, removable doors, exposed hinges, a fold-down windshield and innovative removable and convertible tops and half-doors that allow the Wrangler to retain the brand’s iconic appearance and function. New for 2012, Wrangler Rubicon models now share a body-color hardtop option with the Sahara model, offering a premium appearance.

With room for five adults, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited remains the only four-door 4×4 convertible on the market.

Safety and Security
The 2012 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited are available with an array of safety and security technology features. Standard electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, Trailer-sway Control, Hill-start Assist and brake traction control are among two dozen available safety and security features. Jeep safety systems are engineered to improve handling and accident avoidance while providing occupant protection, allowing Jeep Wrangler customers the ability to safely “go anywhere and do anything.”

Connectivity
The 2012 Jeep Wrangler stays connected with Uconnect systems, including voice recognition, Bluetooth® streaming audio, navigation and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The Wrangler’s connectivity systems have improved ergonomics by giving the driver control at their fingertips. Intuitive buttons on the front and rear of the steering wheel control a number of features allowing the driver to keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Quality
The 2012 Jeep Wrangler underwent millions of durability testing miles during development in the company’s scientific labs, at its proving grounds and on public roads in various climates.

The Wrangler’s 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine recorded more than 12 million customer-equivalent miles on engine dynamometers prior to production. Testing was increased by 50 percent compared to previous Chrysler Group V-6 engines, to guarantee a long life against severe conditions and accommodate high-load applications such as trailer towing. Reducing noise, vibration and harshness was a key objective for every engine component and was achieved using advanced computer-aided engineering techniques.

As the Wrangler approached production, the company also tested day and night, on- and off-road to put the equivalent of three years of wear and tear on the vehicle in approximately three months time. This accelerated testing occurred on public roads, paved and unpaved, in an attempt to find and fix any issues before the first SUVs were delivered to customers. The test drivers checked all the functional aspects of the vehicle, such as heating and cooling, window operation, convertible and removable hardtop operation and navigation system.

Almost two decades ago, Jeep® invented the premium SUV (sport-utility vehicle) segment with the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. More than 4 million worldwide sales later, Jeep has comprehensively honed this winning formula and is now delivering the ultimate combination of Jeep 4×4 off-road capability and on-road refinement with the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

New Jeep Grand Cherokee has been designed on a new platform to deliver premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand’s legendary four-wheel drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case for extraordinary off-road capability and durability.

The new vehicle also offers significantly lowered emissions and improved fuel economy (up to 39 mpg) with its new turbocharged 3-litre V6 CRD engine, together with a world-class interior providing luxury, comfort and enhanced safety. Despite its rugged, trail-tested off-road capabilities, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a sophisticated, luxury SUV that can easily be driven on an everyday basis by anyone.

“With the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee, Jeep has created the benchmark, premium SUV,” says Mike Manley, President and Chief Executive Officer — Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Advanced features such as our new Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction control systems take the new Grand Cherokee to the next level of 4×4 capability. The new generation of the iconic Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers the perfect blend of on-road refinement, superb craftsmanship, world-class design, improved fuel economy, innovative features and legendary, real-world capability.”

In the UK, new Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in two versions, Limited and Overland, both of which are powered by an all-new 237bhp 3-litre V6 turbodiesel.

Exterior Design and Dimensions

The all-new Grand Cherokee features a muscular and athletic new look with a high waist line and a steeply raked windscreen. A low drag coefficient illustrates the efficient aerodynamic shape of the vehicle.

The contemporary design language is nevertheless unmistakably Jeep, and is instantly recognisable thanks to the classic trapezoidal wheel arches together with the familiar Jeep seven-slot grille.

In terms of dimensions, although the car is approximately 7cm wider and 7cm longer than the model it replaces, the wheelbase has been stretched by over 13cm to give extra boot space, and more specifically, extra rear leg-room.

With regard to the cargo area, new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers up to 782 litres of space with all the seats in place – 11% more than the previous model; and the tailgate is power operated on the Overland version. Notwithstanding the amount of luggage space available, a full size spare wheel is carried.

The new Jeep also features short front and rear overhangs for much improved approach, departure and breakover angles and consequent superior off-road capability. The front spoiler is removable for when the terrain gets really tough, giving an extra four degrees of approach angle.

Interior Design

A world-class interior has been achieved thanks to fine materials and elegant appointments, while maintaining a focused attention to detail with high quality interior fit and finish throughout.

Premium materials such as real wood, leather, chrome accents, LED lighting, and premium seating deliver a strong impression of refinement and luxury – expressive design, quality of materials; the precise fit of all panels… these elements also contribute to enhanced noise isolation.

New, soft-touch materials are used at key ‘touch points’ throughout; including doors, consoles and armrests.

The quality of the seat upholstery is another important feature of the world-class interior. Both front seats are heated and ventilated with eight-way power assistance and four-way lumbar adjustment, with a memory system on the driver’s side. In fact, the front seats feature an all-new structure with enhanced bolster contours for improved comfort. The moulded shape of the upper seat shoulder area adds to the look and feel of the seating, while the 12-degrees reclining rear seats, (60/40 split folding), together with the longer platform, enhance comfort for rear passengers who have over 100mm of additional rear legroom.

Interior Equipment

Entertainment

Alpine Premium Sound System

The standard equipment Alpine Premium Audio System creates a full, realistic sound experience using a high-powered 12-channel, 506-watt amplifier powering nine speakers and a subwoofer. Optimally placed throughout Grand Cherokee’s cabin, this surround-sound speaker system delivers an unparalleled aural experience. This premium audio system allows everyone onboard to hear music precisely as the artist intended it.

Media Centre

The Media Centre features an AM/FM radio, CD/DVD player, satellite navigation system (standard on Overland) that’s controlled via a 6.5-inch touch-screen, and a 30GB hard drive. Owners can store up to 6700 tracks on the hard drive and upload music and photos through the USB port or from a CD/DVD. The system includes a single-disc CD player, and can also play DVDs when the vehicle is stationary and the transmission is in Park. Uconnect Bluetooth® with voice commands means that the sound system, sat nav and mobile phones can be operated hands-free.

iPod Interface

With the iPod Control, most iPod-compatible devices can be connected directly to the vehicle’s audio system using the iPod control cable. The iPod can then be operated through the Media Centre sound system or via the steering wheel-mounted controls. While connected, the system even charges the iPod.

Keyless Enter-N-Go

As long as the vehicle’s ignition keys are somewhere on the driver’s person (maybe in a pocket or a bag) the vehicle picks up signals from the transponder and unlocks it, when the driver touches the door handle. It also activates the push-button starter: the driver just presses the brake pedal and pushes the button to start.

The vehicle’s equipment can also be activated without starting the engine. Without a foot on the brake, the driver pushes the button once; pushes twice to turn on the heating/air conditioning and instrumentation; or three times to turn it off again.

CommandView® panoramic sunroof (standard on Overland)

The front roof panel opens rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to front seat passengers. This front glass panel features an express one-touch open and close operation. The rear glass panel, which is fixed, provides extra light and visibility for rear seat passengers. A standard one-touch power sun-shade may be extended to cover the tinted glass panels when closed.

Platform

The all-new Grand Cherokee is the very first vehicle in the market to be built on this brand new platform. The structure was co-developed with Mercedes-Benz and will be used in next generation Mercedes vehicles. With an increase of 146% in overall torsional stiffness, it is now much stronger and more durable than before. As a result, noise, vibration and harshness levels have been drastically improved, giving much better on-road and off-road ride quality. The new platform engineering brings improvements in the following key areas:

- Manoeuvrability

- Overall agility

- Cornering ability

- Steering precision

The all-new Grand Cherokee tips the scale at 2,272kg, which is 38kg less than the outgoing model and represents a considerable achievement when the increase in dimensions is taken into account.

Outstanding touring attributes are another Jeep Grand Cherokee forte. The maximum towing capacity with a braked trailer is a class-topping 3,500kg, which includes an anti-sway damping system featuring a neutral position for flat towing.

Legendary 4×4 Capability

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, (standard equipment on Overland versions). Quadra-Lift air suspension system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving

Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.3 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.4 inches)

Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 2.6 inches of height for 10.7 inches of ground clearance

Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy entry/exit and roof rack loading. NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable, giving the driver control over vehicle ride height

Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle 0.6 inches from NRH. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.1 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. It operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls. Quadra-Lift enhances the ride quality and takes the Grand Cherokee another leap forward. It’s a first-class closed system with a stored air reservoir for a faster response and no lift-time deterioration.

Driver benefits are numerous, and include:

Ease of entry/exit for passengers

Easier cargo loading and unloading

Improved off-road capability by increasing ground clearance, approach, departure and breakover angles

Improved on-road ride comfort

Improved fuel economy at motorway speeds – automatically lowering vehicle height to reduce aerodynamic drag

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Selec-Terrain traction control system (standard equipment on both Limited and Overland), lets customers choose the appropriate off-road setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC).

Selec-Terrain, coupled with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers world-class capability. The system’s control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best all-terrain driving experience.

Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque is tuned for optimal performance

Sport: Provides enhanced on-road fun-to-drive capability

Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation

Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads

Rock: Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to maximum height (10.7 inches) and the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

With the front air dam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 34.3-degree approach angle, (compared to 32.3 on previous model), a 29.3-degree departure angle (compared to 27.5 on previous model) and 23.1-degree breakover angle (compared to 20.4 on previous model).

The all-new front and rear independent suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles. Variable-rate rear springs deliver improved on-road handling and comfort that complement the vehicle’s off-road capability. The new multilink rear suspension features lower control arms and camber/tension links that individually control cornering, bump and braking forces. This is regarded as the optimum set-up for ride comfort and handling stability. The compact design of the system also allows the spare tyre to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath. Anti-roll bars are features on both axles.

Go Anywhere 4×4 Systems

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee employs a 4×4 system called Quadra-Trac II® which features a two-speed transfer box with low ratio gears and an electronically controlled clutch that allows variable torque distribution.

Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tyre slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximises traction before slippage occurs. When tyre slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction. Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra-Trac II.

The drivetrain is further enhanced with sophisticated stability, hill assist and hill descent control systems featuring Brake Traction Control Systems on both axles (BTCS). BTCS uses the brakes to act on any wheel that is slipping, and allows additional torque transfer to those wheels with traction.

In addition, Hill Descent Control allows smooth and controlled descent on rough or slippery terrain without the driver having to touch the brake pedal. It applies the brakes to each wheel individually to slow the vehicle down and maintain driver control on steep slopes.

Meanwhile Hill Start Assist helps drivers make a hill start by keeping the brakes on for a short period of time after a driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal. If the throttle is applied when the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal, the brakes are released.

Engine

Jeep first showed the Euro 5-compliant V6 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, available in the Grand Cherokee for the UK and Europe, at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The new CRD engine is more powerful, more fuel efficient and produces lower emissions than its predecessor.

Built by VM Motori and developed together with Fiat Powertrain Technologies, this new engine produces maximum horsepower of 177 kW (237bhp) at 4,000 rpm and torque of 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) at 1,800-2,800 rpm. This translates to 10 per cent more power and eight per cent more torque than the engine it replaces.

Even with its improved performance, fuel economy for the new 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine is 34.0 mpg (8.3 L/100km) on the combined cycle, an improvement of 19 per cent over the previous diesel engine. CO2 emissions (combined cycle) are also reduced by 20 per cent, now at 218 g/km.

From a retail perspective the improvement in CO2 emissions represents a saving of £1,220 in current VED taxation over a five year period compared with the outgoing model.
The V6 turbodiesel engine is fitted with new-generation, 1,800-bar injectors along with new MultiJet II technology, developed and patented by Fiat Powertrain, which made its debut in 2009 on the 1.3-litre diesel engine in the Fiat Punto Evo.

Engine Block Structure

The new engine features a compressed graphite iron, 60-degree block with aluminium cylinder heads and a two-piece structural aluminium oil pan. Bore is 83 mm (3.27 in) and stroke is 92 mm (3.62 in) for a total displacement of 2987 cc (182 in3). Bore spacing is 96 mm (3.78 in).

The engine is compact and lightweight, with overall dimensions of 695 mm (27.36 in) in length, 729 mm (28.7 in) in width and 697.5 mm (27.46 in) in height. Weight of the new engine, including ancillaries, is 230 kg (507 lbs).

The engine block features a notably stiffened crankcase construction, including a bedplate that provides a rigid and stiff carrier for the crankshaft. This in turn helps reduce overall noise from the lower reciprocating assembly and contributes to significant improvements in lowering overall noise, vibration and harshness.

Adding to the structural rigidity of the block, the two-piece aluminium oil pan has been designed to provide strength and contribute to the quietness of the engine. The lower pan has been reinforced for off-road use. Crankcase capacity is 7.7 litres.

Cylinder heads are constructed of aluminium and feature a chain-driven, dual overhead-camshaft design with four valves per cylinder. Intake valves measure 28 mm (1.1 in), and exhaust valves are 24.5 mm (0.96 in) in diameter. Combustion-chamber volume is 24.68 cm3 (1.51 in3).

A forged-steel crankshaft is supported by four main bearing journals fitted with four-bolt main bearing caps incorporated into the bedplate. Externally balanced, the crankshaft measures 442.2 mm (17.41 in), reducing the overall packaging requirements of the engine. Connecting rods, with an overall length of 162.9 mm (6.41 in), are constructed in cast iron.

Lightweight, cast-aluminium pistons are designed to provide minimal friction. The compression ratio of the new diesel engine is now 16.5:1, reduced from 18.1:1 on the previous model, contributing to cleaner combustion and providing more power.

All main bearings are a lead-free design for reduced environmental impact during construction and later recycling of the engine.

Engine Performance Features

The induction system includes swirl control to optimise combustion. Fitted between the intake system and the combustion chamber, swirl control effectively provides an ideal air/fuel mixture at all engine speeds.

Precise fuel delivery is through a 1,800-bar common-rail fuel injection system. Thanks to the new MultiJet II technology, which makes use of a special balanced solenoid valve, the new injector is capable of making up to eight injections per cycle with the possibility of managing the two main injections in a single modular profile (IRS – Injection Rate Shaping). This guarantees a reduction in consumption and polluting emissions of approximately 2% compared to a traditional injector and ensures a drastic reduction in noise levels.

The new 3.0-litre diesel engine utilises a single Garrett VGT 2056 turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Compact and lightweight, the turbocharger provides near-instant response and includes an air-to-air intercooler.

Fuel Economy and Emissions

Fuel economy for the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine is rated at 27.4 mpg on the urban cycle and 39.2 mpg on the extra-urban cycle. For the combined cycle, the fuel economy is rated at 34.0 mpg. At motorway cruising speeds, 700 miles can easily be achieved on a single tank of fuel. The engine is designed to run on EN590 ultra-low-sulphur diesel fuel.

For this power unit, cast-iron exhaust manifolds are utilised. Additional emissions controls include a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5 emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve.

Combined cycle CO2 emissions are now 218 g/km. Not only is the engine more frugal and environmentally-friendly, but it also delivers outstanding performance, providing the new Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 126mph.

Safety and Security

Awe-inspiring powertrain

Powering the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler Group’s all-new 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque – an improvement of 45 horsepower and 45 lb.-ft. torque over the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 it replaces.

An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wider and improved rpm band. Specifically, 90-percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance.

Standard Fuel Saver Technology and a new-for-2012 active valve exhaust system allows four-cylinder operation to engage over a wider rpm range, to deliver both improved fuel efficiency – an estimated 13-percent increase on the highway – and an extended range of approximately 450 miles on one tank of gas.

Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard AutoStick on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the race track. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift while the transmission controller calibration prevents situations that might over rev the engine. Fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting makes the powertrain more responsive while minimizing harshness.

Outstanding ride, handling and capability

For 2011, all Jeep Grand Cherokee models boast an improved and refined on-road ride thanks in part to the vehicle’s body structure. Torsional stiffness was improved 146 percent versus the previous model, for improved ride, durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The improvement is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone, marking a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive.

With the new 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8, engineers have improved handling even further.

The best handling Jeep vehicle ever – capable of .90 g on the skid pad – features a new SRT-tuned, adaptive damping suspension managed by the new Jeep Selec-Track system that interacts with several different systems (stability control, adaptive damping, transmission shift strategy, transfer case torque proportioning, Electronic Limited Slip Differential performance, throttle control and cylinder de-activation) to automatically tune the dynamics of the vehicle. Drivers can manually choose between five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions:

Auto: provides the most compliant ride and automatically adapts to any road situation using the adaptive suspension tuning

Sport: provides enhanced body control for a sporty, fun-to-drive ride for the street

Tow: provides a safe reduction in pitch and bounce for enhanced towing capability

Track: provides the high-performance, firm, “track-tuned” suspension option to lock down body motion for the ultimate handling experience

Snow: provides the most conservative dynamic mode, so the vehicle will safely stay
in-line in inclement winter weather conditions

The standard Jeep Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, the Jeep 4×4 system can transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to one rear wheel.

The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles to maintain the driver’s intended path. The new Grand Cherokee SRT8 also features an Electronic Limited Slip Differential that eliminates rear wheel slip and improves handling.

The performance-tuned, fully-hydraulic steering system is improved with a new, heavy-duty pump and pump cooler. Revised gearing gives drivers more direct feel and on-center response.

New split 5-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ride on P295/45ZR20 Pirelli PZero run-flat tires (standard All-season or available Three-season).

Rounding out the capability of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a trailer tow rating of 5,000 lbs.

Outstanding braking

Chrysler Group’s SRT vehicles are well known for their world-class braking. Stopping power for the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes courtesy of new SRT high-performance Brembo brakes with four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS).

Stopping distance performance of 116 feet from 60-0 mph is made possible by new red-painted, Brembo 6-piston (front) and 4-piston (rear) calipers, and vented rotors at all four corners measuring 15-inches (front) and 13.8-inches (rear).

Aggressive and functional exterior

The functional performance exterior of the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 features the “planted” look of a high-performance sports car by being lowered 1 inch and adding new, SRT-exclusive, body-color wheel flares and side sill cladding.

A one-piece front fascia contains new LED multi-function daytime running lamps that result in an exclusive face for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, while a body-colored front grille with a unique black screen background and chrome bezel inserts adds to the aggressive look.

The integrated lower front grille is painted in gloss black and a newly designed underbody belly pan features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and fade performance. Completing the new front end is a newly sculpted hood with functional dual black heat extractors for added engine cooling.

At the rear, the SRT performance influence continues with a new liftgate spoiler that reduces drag and improves downforce. A unique one-piece rear fascia includes a separate air diffuser along with an available trailer receiver and access cover. New for the 2012 version of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the dual-sport exhaust system featuring 4-inch exhaust tips.

Race-inspired and functional interior

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s refined, luxurious interior takes on a performance feel in SRT8 form with race-inspired technology and SRT-exclusive appointments.

An all-new, leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel features a unique rim section with a flattened bottom surface – evoking a race-inspired cockpit – that showcases the SRT logo. Standard paddle-shift controls flank both sides of the new contoured palm rests while all audio and Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) controls are accessible from the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel. A power tilt and telescoping steering column also is standard.

SRT-exclusive Performance Pages are new for 2012 and show instant feedback on steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, 0-60 mph time, 60-0 mph braking distance, g-forces, and one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times, along with expanded engine information.

New SRT-styled Nappa leather and suede seats, with sculpted bolsters and adjustable headrests, provide all the comfort for daily drives – and “grip” to keep the driver and passengers in place during spirited driving. The embroidered SRT logos and contrast stitching accent the two front seats. Heated (front and rear) and ventilated (front) seats are standard.

Carbon fiber accents are integrated into the instrument panel and door trim panels and new bright, racing style brake and pedal pads add to the high-performance look inside the cabin.

An available CommandView® dual-pane sun roof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sun roof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle.

The available Luxury Group package adds premium leather to the door trim panels, instrument panel and center console along with a power liftgate, adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Warning and Blind-spot Monitoring.

The new Compass 4×4, which goes on sale here on 15 April, heralds an exciting future for the iconic Jeep brand. As the company celebrates its 70th anniversary, its prospects have never looked brighter, and a wide range of new products, including an all-new Grand Cherokee, are already entering Western European markets.

British car buyers will see an early example of this activity in the shape of the sleek new Compass. Even though it’s the first new generation Jeep to offer two-wheel drive versions, Compass still personifies the brand’s unique DNA, symbolising free-spirited adventure, the authenticity of the original 4×4, and mastery of adverse conditions both off and on-road.

This will continue to be the foundation for every Jeep and has proven appeal to customers’ emotional side. But new Jeeps also aim to appeal to buyers’ rational side and the Compass is the ideal product to instigate this shift in perception.

Competing in the rapidly expanding compact SUV segment, Jeep’s new Compass range has been designed to appeal to a wide audience. New two-wheel drive versions put it within reach of hatchback owners who want to trade up. These buyers don’t need four-wheel drive, but want the styling, image and practicality of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Compass allows them to have just that with the authentic Jeep experience thrown in for good measure.

At the other end of the scale, Compass offers a credible 4×4 to buyers who are downsizing from larger models. The Jeep name has unrivalled credentials in this market and the Compass now has a true premium feel thanks to the improved quality of its new interior and the Grand Cherokee inspired looks. Throw in the high levels of specification you’d normally expect in larger cars, plus a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty, and the competitively priced Compass makes owning a Jeep not only attractive but also accessible.

New look, new direction
The new-for-2011 Jeep Compass has undergone a comprehensive redesign inside and out to appeal to a wider customer base.

It blends strengths from the previous model such as high equipment levels, affordability, interior flexibility and economy, with a sophisticated design, revised chassis, advanced new line-up of engines and a completely revised cabin. As the firm’s first ever compact SUV, the Compass brought the authentic Jeep experience to a new type of buyer. Now it’s set to repeat that feat, thanks to new two-wheel drive versions that will be sold alongside the 4×4 to make the Compass even more affordable.

Part of the inspiration for the original model was to appeal to buyers who may have thought that a Jeep was beyond their means. The new model builds on that principal with a wider range than ever before and prices stretching from £16,995 to £23,995 OTR. There will be four trim levels, with 4×4 Limited and 70th Anniversary versions on sale this month. The entry-level Sport and Sport+ versions will join the range in August. There will also be a choice between three different engines, two petrol and one diesel. These have four power outputs and offer significantly improved performance and economy over the engines they replace.

With its steeply raked windscreen, roof rails and side mirrors sculpted in Chrysler’s state-of-the-art aero-acoustic wind tunnel to reduce drag and wind noise, the Compass has always had a sporty shape. These properties have been maintained, even though the details have been extensively re-worked to reflect a more modern incarnation of the brand, while retaining the classic Jeep design ‘language’ thanks to the seven slot grille and trapezoidal wheelarches. And to underline the improved quality of the Compass, several exterior details are now ringed with chrome.

The grille combines with a new bumper, front valance, quad reflector head lights and projector fog lights to give a sleek and sophisticated look. The bonnet now further enhances this with its subtle power bulge, hinting at the Jeep’s bold attitude and all-weather abilities.

New cladding on the doors and sills helps fend off debris during off-road driving and also gives the Compass a more assertive look. And the rear door handles remain hidden in the C pillar to help put the emphasis on the rugged shoulder line stamped into the doors. At the back, a new rear valance and LED tail lamps combine with a new rear tailgate spoiler to give a more premium appearance. The look is capped with newly designed roof rails that have been slimmed down to give the Compass a sportier silhouette.

The Limited and 70th Anniversary models get a chrome exhaust tailpipe and sit on new-look 18-inch alloy wheels. The Sport and Sport+ sit on 17-inch alloys as standard.

Affordable luxury
One of the most appealing elements of the Compass has always been its ability to deliver the performance of an SUV combined with the price, handling and fuel economy of a compact car.

The latest model builds on that with an all-new interior that demonstrates the style, refinement, safety and high specification level normally associated with larger models. The extensively redesigned cabin features softer and higher quality materials along with bright chrome accents and a long list of standard equipment added for the 2011 model.

There is now soft touch padded trim on the upper surface of the front doors. And the new centre armrest has undergone a similar treatment and now has a split lid for additional storage. The luxury feel goes further still with standard fit cruise control along with backlit switches for the door handles and locks, power mirrors and windows. And safety is a given with active front headrests, and next-generation multi-stage front airbags with side curtain front and rear airbags as standard.

To put the Compass on the ‘radar’ of a broad buyer spectrum, the Sport, Sport+, Limited and 70th Anniversary trim levels cover a wide range of specifications. This allows Compass to appeal to hatchback owners looking to trade up, as well as competing at the upper end of the compact SUV segment and ‘capturing’ downsizing drivers.

Demonstrating an impressive level of standard equipment, every model has automatic climate control, apart from the Sport which features manual air-conditioning. Front seat passengers sit in sumptuously padded bucket seats, covered in leather with accent stitching in the Limited and 70th Anniversary models, premium cloth in other versions. A six-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats are standard in the Limited and 70th Anniversary.

All models feature chrome rings surrounding the air vents, while illuminated cupholders in the centre console emphasise the feeling of quality already given by the leather wrapped handbrake and steering wheel. The driver looks at LED backlit gauges in the instrument binnacle and holds a new Jeep steering wheel. This adjusts for rake and features integrated controls that allow operation of the sound system, cruise control and handsfree phone.

It doesn’t just look stylish, the Compass has plenty of kit to make life as a driver and passenger more comfortable, more fun and more efficient. Electric windows are standard throughout, with the driver’s a one-touch for added convenience. The folding mirrors too are electrically operated and heated and there’s remote central locking. Inside, the electronic vehicle information centre incorporates a trip computer and displays crucial stats such as average mpg, distance to empty, a compass, and the outside temperature.

The padded armrest over the centre console slides up to three inches to suit all shapes and sizes. And the storage bin it covers is cavernous. Handily, it contains a 12-volt power socket for charging mobile phones and MP3 players. Because Jeep appreciates that a family car can never have enough storage space, there’s a generous glove box and an extra large bin above it along with usefully sized door pockets.

Sport and Sport+ models feature a Media Centre CD player and MP3 compatibility, while the Limited and 70th Anniversary add a six CD system. All models come with four speakers and an audio jack for connecting MP3 players. Owners of Sport+ models and above have a USB socket and can connect their mobile phones and use them handsfree with Uconnect Bluetooth.

The Uconnect sound and navigation system is available as an option on Limited and 70th Anniversary versions, featuring a 30-gigabyte hard drive which can store thousands of songs and allow operators to format playlists, and view picture files and videos. The user-friendly Uconnect, operated via a 6.5-inch touch screen, also incorporates a navigation system with real-time traffic information.

To ensure music fans get the most out of their stored tunes, the sound and navigation option incorporates a Boston Acoustics premium sound system. This features an eight-channel 368-watt amplifier with nine speakers including a powerful subwoofer. Speakers that flip down from the tailgate when it’s open, mean owners can enjoy their music from outside the car too.

High specification aside, the main principal behind the Jeep Compass has been to get the basics right. The rear seat is a good example with plenty of leg, head and shoulder room for three people. The back rest will recline through 12 degrees to enable occupants to relax, and it also splits 60/40 and folds forwards. And because when it folds forwards it folds flat, it enables owners to make the most of the space they’ve got, especially when combined with the flat-folding front passenger seat.

Even the boot light has multiple roles: you can unclip it and it becomes a bright torch.

Off-road not soft-road
A new-look engine line-up underpins this latest Compass range. It features three capacities and four outputs, each of which has been designed to combine performance with refinement and fuel economy to satisfy multiple uses. For the same reason, the Compass is the first new generation Jeep to feature versions with two as well as four-wheel drive.

The majority of sales – about 65 per cent – are expected to be the new 2.2-litre CRD turbo diesel engine. This comes either with 134bhp or as a high output 161bhp version. It’s an in-line four cylinder Mercedes-Benz engine, co-developed specially for the Compass, and featuring the latest common rail technology. Compared to the two-litre engine it replaces, the high output version has a 23bhp increase in power, while its 320Nm of torque is 10Nm greater than the engine it replaces. Available from just 1400rpm this cuts the amount of gearchanges needed to make driving effortless, particularly in traffic. A further benefit is a significant increase in fuel efficiency over the previous unit.

The petrol engines have a capacity of either 2.0 or 2.4-litres and are Chrysler’s adaptable ‘World Engines’. Both these units feature dual Variable Valve Timing on the twin overhead camshafts. This electronically controlled timing produces more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation. Proving their cutting edge credentials, the engines also feature an aluminium block, four valves per cylinder, forged crankshaft and connecting rods, and intake manifold and exhaust flow control valves. These engines are expected to make up around 35 per cent of sales.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine comes with a five-speed manual gearbox while the diesel cars all feature a smooth shifting six-speed manual. The 2.4-litre is the only engine in the range available with the CVT2 Continuously Variable Transmission. All cars feature electronic throttle control in place of the mechanical throttle linkage. This gives a seamless and consistent engine response and integrates with technologies such as the variable camshaft timing to improve fuel economy.

Jeep is of course famous for its legendary go-anywhere ability, and the Compass is no different. The 2.4 petrol and 2.2CRD high output engines both feature Jeep’s Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time active four-wheel drive system featuring a locking mode that gives owners reassuring performance in low traction conditions. For normal driving, power is sent to the front wheels in order to save fuel. But the system automatically shifts power from the front axle to the rear axle as needed, (when wheel slippage is detected), using an Electronically Controlled Clutch. The system also features a locking function to send an equal amount of power to the front and rear for maximum traction in demanding terrain.

This takes the form of a lockable centre coupling. Pulling up on the chrome T handle on the centre console disables the automatic function and enforces a torque split of 50-50 between front and rear wheels, enabling the driver to cope with deep snow, sand or other slippery surfaces.

With regard to two-wheel drive versions, many of Jeep’s legendary attributes are retained. There’s up to 209mm of ground clearance, which gives the Compass an ability to ford water that’s up to 279mm deep. On top of that, a 20-degree approach angle, 20-degree breakover angle and 32-degree departure angle ensure that even with two-wheel drive only, this machine is as competent in the rough as many rivals’ four-wheel drive offerings.

Whichever engine owners choose, they’ll have a capable towing car with the capacity to pull up to 2000kg depending on engine choice. The whole package makes for a reassuringly dependable machine that will cope reliably with almost anything a notoriously unreliable world will throw at it.

Safety from the ground up
As you would expect of a car designed from the ground up to cope with the everyday rigours of family life, the Compass has safety built in.

It is constructed around a safety cage structure with an ultra high strength roll-formed steel cross beam and front crumple zones. Side impact beams are built into the doors for improved protection and there are advanced multi-stage front airbags. These adjust their output according to the severity of the impact and work with side curtain airbags at the front and rear. The new Compass also features new active head restraints built into the front seats to help limit whiplash injuries.

Butevery effort is made to ensure crashes are avoided in the first place. Every Compass features powerful disc brakes all round. New quad reflector headlights and high output projector fog lights (standard on all versions) maximise visibility at night and in bad weather.

And the suspension has been re-tuned to improve the Compass’s behaviour on-road. Independent suspension all round has new higher spring and damping rates, added rebound springs and a larger diameter rear anti-roll bar to improve refinement and ride quality. It also enhances the driving experience and ensures that the Compass reacts instantly and predictably to driver inputs.

MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension are tuned for superior ride, handling and noise reduction. And to ensure the driver maintains control, even during extreme manoeuvres, Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) anticipates the potential for wheel lift by monitoring the driver’s steering wheel input and the speed of the vehicle. When ERM determines that the rate of change of the steering wheel angle and the vehicle’s speed are sufficient to potentially cause wheel lift, it applies the brake of the appropriate wheel and may also reduce engine power. ERM will only intervene during very severe or evasive driving manoeuvres.

This system works alongside Electronic Stability Control which monitors and responds to wheel slippage and is standard throughout the range. It’s also switchable, so more enthusiastic drivers can limit the electronic intervention for improved progress off-road.

On manual transmission versions, Hill Start Assist helps the driver make a seamless hill start by automatically holding brake pressure for a short period after the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal.

The legendary Jeep Wrangler has demonstrated its continued success as a serious off-roader after scooping another major honour – 4×4 of the Year, Extreme category.

The award comes from specialist publication 4×4 Magazine, whose panel of expert judges put a four-door version of the US off-roader at the top of a list of extremely capable competitors, including the Land Rover Defender and Lada Niva.
The judges praised the Wrangler’s awesome off-roading capability, style, and equipment.

“The modern Wrangler offers a cracking all-round package for the 4×4 buyer. The three-door version is best left to true hardcore individualists, but the way-more-practical five-door version is definitely worth a closer look,” says Hils Everitt, editor, 4×4 Magazine.

“There’s a choice of manual or auto, and equipment such as leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise control, Uconnect Bluetooth and climate control. For the second year running, it’s the all-round package and value for money that means it out-scores rivals to take our top spot.”

“It’s well known the world over, but still it’s great to see the Jeep Wrangler being recognised by experts for what it does best – extreme off-roading,” says Nigel Land, director, Chrysler and Jeep in the UK. “There’s lots more to come from Wrangler, which we are looking forward to showing our customers in 2011.”

With its ‘go anywhere and do anything’ approach, Wrangler offers a unique combination of world-class off-road driving, fun, everyday convenience and versatility.

Wrangler models are covered by the comprehensive Jeep warranty scheme, which provides a three-year/60,000 mile mechanical warranty, seven-year anti-corrosion warranty and one-year European roadside assistance.

The diesel-powered Wrangler (manual) returns 39.8 mpg on the combined cycle and has a CO2 figure of 187 g/km. Prices start at £22,995 for the two-door Wrangler 2.8 CRD Sport.

Coupled with a host of interior refinements, and improved ride and handling characteristics in all conditions – courtesy of upgraded steering and suspension systems – the new Jeep Compass offers a unique blend of premium styling, capability, efficiency and value that is unmatched in the compact-SUV segment.

“With the new 2011 Jeep Compass, we’ve applied the premium design cues of our award-winning new Grand Cherokee,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO — Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Combined with new interior appointments, and refinements to the suspension and steering systems, Jeep Compass provides consumers the ultimate combination of styling, capability, fuel economy, efficiency, safety and value in the important compact-SUV segment.”

Delivering the packaging and interior flexibility of an SUV with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car, the new 2011 Jeep Compass also boasts more than 30 safety and security features, including standard side-curtain air bags, electronic stability program (ESC), electronic roll mitigation, Hill-start Assist (with manual transmission), side curtain air bags for all rows and available front-seat-mounted side air bags.

Design

The new 2011 Jeep Compass has a distinct family resemblance to the all-new, premium 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

With a new hood, new front fenders, new fascia and new headlamps as well as a new grille that has been detailed with a small dose of chrome surrounding the traditional seven slots found on all Jeep vehicles, the new face of the Compass features a more serious, yet sophisticated, appearance. Forward lighting performance is improved with the use of quad reflector headlamps, and the fog lamps are now high output projector lamps. Adding an element of muscle, the hood has been enhanced with a subtle power bulge. The result is a vehicle that projects an attitude that is much more serious and conveys the Compass’ capability in all weather and driving conditions.

New brightwork throughout the exterior lends an upscale touch without compromising the off-road performance of the Compass. A band of protective cladding has been added for 2011, serving to fend off debris when driving in challenging weather conditions or off-road, and providing a new appearance.

This trend continues with enhancements to the rear of the Compass. A new rear fascia, new body-color rear spoiler and subtle, upscale touches including new LED taillamps and on the Limited model, bright trim on the step pad and a chrome exhaust tip adorn the new 2011 Jeep Compass. Topping it off, a new set of roof rails were designed with a slimmed down appearance and a small amount of brightwork. The 2011 Compass sports new, standard 17-inch aluminum wheels, and 18-inch aluminum or chrome-clad wheels are available on Limited models.

Interior upgrades for the 2011 Jeep Compass include new soft touch front-door trim panels with a padded upper surface; a new center armrest; a new Jeep steering wheel with integrated controls that allow the driver to operate the radio, cruise control, available handsfree phone and other vehicle functions while keeping their hands on the wheel; new cloth interior with premium cloth bucket seats in the front; standard speed control on all models; new backlighting of door switches, door locks, windows and power mirror controls.

The new 2011 Jeep Compass offers an array of clever features consumers will appreciate whether commuting to work, driving in challenging weather conditions, exploring new trails or out-of-the-way places. Uconnect media center with iPod interface, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, navigation with SIRIUS Travel Link, power sunroof, a premium audio system with nine Boston Acoustic speakers, illuminated cup holders, liftgate speakers and fold-flat rear seats are some of the available cool features that make the Compass the perfect compact SUV, enabling consumers to enjoy any adventure.

The 2011 Jeep Compass is packed with standard features that provide value and convenience for drivers and passengers. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power/heated exterior mirrors, keyless entry, aluminum wheels, fog lamps, cruise control and sunscreen glass.

New for 2011 the Jeep Compass offers an All-weather Capability Group option which includes Goodyear 17-inch all-terrain tires, all-season floor mats, daytime running headlamps, engine block heater and tow hooks.

The 2011 Jeep Compass offers customers unsurpassed 4×4 off-road capability with Jeep Freedom Drive II. The new Jeep Compass also boasts a retuned suspension for 2011, with higher spring and damping rates, added rebound springs, and an increased diameter of the rear sway bar. Despite these numerous capability features, the 2011 Jeep Compass boasts unsurpassed 4×4 fuel economy in its segment.

Jeep Compass is available in three drivetrain configurations. In addition to the standard front-wheel-drive system, Jeep Compass also is available with Freedom Drive I and the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package.

Freedom Drive I is an available full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode designed to give drivers year-round assurance with the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions. This active four-wheel-drive system is recommended for daily use, including slick conditions that come with rain and light snow. Freedom Drive I also features a lockable center coupling, giving drivers the ability to put the Jeep Compass in four-wheel-drive lock mode to handle deep snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces.

The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package is an available four-wheel-drive system that delivers Jeep Trail Rated® capability in Compass form. The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated, 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a one-inch raised ride height, a full-size spare tire, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps and manual seat height adjuster. The available Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package is recommended for moderate off-road situations that include steep grades, occasional wheel lift and rock or log climbing.

The 2011 Jeep Compass’ powertrain is designed to deliver world-class performance in all weather conditions, fuel economy and refinement, all at an affordable, value-packed price.

Compass features a standard 2.0-liter World Engine for the Compass and Latitude models that provides 158 horsepower (117 kW) and 141 lb.-ft. (191 N*m) of torque coupled with the continuously variable transmission (CVT2), and delivers unsurpassed 23 mpg in the city, and 29 mpg on the highway when mated to the five-speed manual transmission.

The proven 2.4-liter World Engine produces 172-horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque and is available on all models and standard on the Limited. This 2.4-liter World Engine has dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, which helps optimize the torque curve at all speeds and produces more power, better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation than engines without dual VVT. Dual VVT is a technology typically not available on vehicles sold in the United States in the Jeep Compass’ price class. The Jeep Compass’ 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transaxle in front-wheel drive configuration delivers unsurpassed 23 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city, and 29 mpg on the highway.

Jeep Compass also features a standard five-speed manual transaxle on the entry-level Compass and a CVT that is available on the Compass and standard on the Latitude and Limited models. The Compass’ CVT2 is a second-generation CVT that Chrysler Group engineers calibrated for pleasing engine response and precise ratio control. CVT2 contributes to a fuel economy improvement of 6–8 percent compared with a traditional four-speed automatic. The Compass CVT2 also improves vehicle performance compared with a traditional automatic transaxle because of optimized gear ratios, especially in the 30–60 mph range during passing maneuvers.

The 2011 Jeep Compass also provides up to 2,000 lbs. of towing capacity.

Jeep Compass Model Lineup

The 2011 Jeep Compass is available in three configurations: Compass, Latitude and Limited. All are available with front-wheel drive, the Freedom Drive I full-time, active 4×4 system or the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package full-time, active 4×4 system with low-range capability.

The 2011 Jeep Compass is available in the following exterior colors: Blackberry Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Bright White Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat, Deep Cherry Red Crystal Clear Coat Deep Charcoal Gray (limited availability) and Mineral Gray Pearl Coat (late availability).

The current 2.0 Volkswagen diesel engine has just been replaced with a modern 163bhp 2.2 CRD engine sourced from Mercedes-Benz, offering a significantly wider spread of torque available from lower RPM.

This new engine boasts advanced common-rail technology with a turbocharged inline-4 diesel, leading to significant improvements in power output (+ 23bhp) and torque (+10Nm) combined with an increase in fuel efficiency to 42.8 mpg (combined).

As well as the fuel efficiency increase, CO2 emissions are further reduced. This leads to a lower tax band (H) which in turn reduces both showroom tax and the annual tax burden.

The more powerful engine increases the vehicle’s maximum speed from 117mph to 125mph and reduces the 0-62mph acceleration time to 10.7 seconds, but it also cements Jeep Patriot’s position as a serious towing vehicle, elevating its maximum towing weight from 1,500 kg to 2,000 kg (braked trailer).

The new diesel powered Patriot will be available in the following versions:

- 2.2 CRD Sport

- 2.2 CRD Sport +

- 2.2 CRD Limited

- 2.2 CRD Overland

Compared to the outgoing vehicle, Sport trim now offers improvements such as body coloured door handles, Hill Start Assist, leather wrapped hand brake and ‘active’ head restraints (front row).

Compared to the previous car, Sport + versions now offer: cruise control, deep-tint sunscreen glass, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, uconnect phone (Bluetooth® handsfree communication and Voice Command) and rear view auto-dimming mirror with integrated microphone.

Limited models add Hill Start Assist, leather wrapped hand brake, ‘active’ head restraints (front row) and a 6-way power driver seat, while the Overland version also gets a raft of high tech and luxury features including 18-inch aluminium wheels, premium leather trimmed seats with embroidered ‘Overland’ logo, additional front seat side airbags, rear park assist, tyre pressure monitoring display and chrome finish door sill scuff plates.

The new Jeep Patriot range starts at £14,995 OTR for the 2.4 Sport petrol, rising to £21,995 OTR for the 2.2 CRD Overland.

With prices starting from £13,995, the Jeep Patriot appeals to customers that want a stand-out vehicle that is highly capable on- and off-road but who also want the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a family hatchback.

Jeep Patriot is designed for customers who want four-wheel-drive capability and year-round versatility combined with excellent fuel economy and an attractive price point.

With a modern interior and classic Jeep styling, including traditional round Jeep headlamps, seven-slot grille, muscular wheel arches, and strong stance — the 2010 Jeep Patriot broadens the Jeep design appeal to new customers to the brand.

The new Jeep Patriot range will include five models, and comes with a 138 bhp 2.0-litre diesel with a six-speed manual gearbox and a 168 bhp 2.4-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.

Jeep Patriot UK pricing (OTR):

2.4 Sport (manual) £13,995
2.4 Sport + (manual)	£14,995
2.0 CRD Sport (manual) £16,495
2.4 Limited (CVT) £18,495
2.0 CRD Limited (manual)	£18,995

What’s more, customers can also get the Jeep Patriot for even less money if they purchase a vehicle under the Government’s scrappage scheme. With £2,000 off the purchase price, new buyers can get a Jeep Patriot from £11,995.1

Even at this exceptional entry-price, Jeep Patriot comes remarkably well-equipped. Standard features on the Jeep Patriot include electric windows, air conditioning and 17”aluminium wheels. Along with a highly competitive price and Jeep’s legendary off-road ability, excellent fuel economy also comes as standard. The 2.0 CRD returns a wallet-welcoming 42.2mpg combined.

Jeep Patriot Sport + offers even more additional features as standard; front fog lamps, cruise control, deep-tint sunscreen glass, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and uconnect phone with Bluetooth connectivity and voice command.

Safety is also increasingly important for customers and the Jeep Patriot is loaded with many standard safety features, including front and side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Electronic Roll Mitigation, Brake Assist and the ‘Freedom Drive I™’ active full-time, active four-wheel drive system, all of which add to Patriot’s tremendous value.

Federico Goretti, Managing Director of Chrysler UK Ltd, said: “The fuel-efficient Patriot has always appealed to customers that want a vehicle with Jeep’s legendary brand cachet and desirability, but who also demand comfort, practicality, value for money and high levels of safety equipment.

“Compact family SUVs with four-wheel drive systems are becoming more sought after as they offer better handling and enhanced safety on the road. The Jeep Patriot ticks all the boxes offering all-round driver appeal.”

With an entry level price of under £14,000, the Jeep Patriot is one of the most attractive alternatives for buyers looking for their next family car – young families want a vehicle that looks different but still offers plenty of room, safety, security and practicality, together with great performance and fuel economy. Vauxhall Astra or VW Golf customers will see the Jeep Patriot as a strong contender and credible alternative. The Patriot is the best value 4×4 in its segment and the only SUV of its size to offer 4WD capability under £14,000.

The Patriot is spacious, highly equipped and offers great value for money. Its active full time four wheel drive system – Freedom Drive I™ – provides real world capability and confidence in all-weather conditions and only engages four-wheel drive when it’s needed – the Jeep Patriot is a car that gives its owners the very best of both worlds: the fuel-efficiency of a conventional hatchback and the go-anywhere ability and all-year round confidence customers expect of a Jeep.

4×4 Magazine recentlyawarded the Jeep Patriot ‘Budget 4×4 of the Year 2010’ at its annual awards ceremony. The judges praised the Patriot for its economical diesel engine, Freedom Drive I™ four wheel drive system and its long list of standard specification.

With its combination of fun, freedom, utility and acclaimed Jeep 4×4 capability, the 2010 Jeep Patriot stands out from the competition.

4×4 Magazine reviewed the top 4x4s on sale in the UK for their annual ‘4×4 of the Year 2010’ test at Baden Hall, near Eccleshall. The award categories were Budget, Family, SUV, Pick-Ups, Luxury and Extreme.

Hils Everitt, Editor of 4×4 Magazine, said: “This year’s test was reduced to the top 20 4x4s currently on sale in the UK so that we could concentrate on those 4x4s that still retain some credibility as true all-rounders. Our criteria was simple: that vehicles should be powered by a diesel engine and offer some form of sophisticated off-road ability.”

Jeep Wrangler: winner of the Extreme 4×4 of the Year

The judges said: “The Jeep Wrangler came out the winner in a straight fight against Land Rover’s Defender, a category reduced by the absence of the now discontinued Nissan Patrol in the UK and the lack of a diesel option for the Hummer. Compare the Jeep to the Land Rover back-to-back and the Wrangler really starts to show-up the Land Rover’s age. Air bags, stability control, optional axle diff locks, removable hard-top, soft-top, cruise control, sat nav and a choice of manual or auto are all options, if not standard features… It’ll also go the same places as the Defender and the economical diesel makes the more comfortable journeys cheaper.”

Jeep Cherokee: winner of the SUV of the Year

Jeep won again with the Cherokee, which made its debut at last year’s test. This year it triumphed over Land Rover’s Freelander 2 and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. The judges said: “In terms of price and value for money the Cherokee simply cannot be touched. Jeep has packed the Cherokee with enough toys and features that the official list of options extends to just four items! It will also provide a quiet, comfortable drive, returning 34mpg. And its low-range gearing combined with hill descent and hill start assist gives the Jeep genuine off-road capability and it can tow a pick-up busting 2.8 tonnes.”

Jeep Patriot – Budget 4×4 of the Year

“The third of Jeep’s titles went to the Patriot, which had to outclass Daihatsu’s long-serving Terios and the new Fiat Panda Cross.

“It triumphed because you may pay more for the Patriot than either of its rivals, but that does translate into more 4×4 for your money. The VW-sourced 2.0-litre offers well over 40mpg. Although there’s no low range, the on-demand 4×4 system with selectable 4×4 lock-up and traction control, as well as anti-roll mitigation, add up to an impressive package. With typical Jeep generosity the Patriot goes all out by packing in as many features as possible. Once again Jeep has packaged a great product at a price that’s hard to ignore.”

The new 2010 Jeep Liberty Renegade boasts a new premium, rugged appearance with standard class-leading capability features, while the Jeep Wrangler lineup is expanded with unique limited-edition models – Jeep Wrangler Islander and Jeep Wrangler Mountain – that deliver high-impact visual appeal with outdoor fun-and-freedom themes.

‘While clearly appealing to our core customers, these three new Jeep models will attract new customers to the Jeep dealer showroom,’ said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. ‘The new Liberty Renegade delivers renowned Jeep capability and an array of standard features in a stunning new rugged, premium design, while both Wrangler models expand the iconic anchor of the Jeep brand with unique, limited-edition versions that consumers have told us they want.’

The new Jeep Liberty Renegade and Jeep Wrangler Islander edition will be available in Jeep showrooms in the first quarter of 2010. The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition will follow in the second quarter.

Jeep Liberty Renegade

The ‘Renegade’ name returns to the Jeep® lineup for 2010. First used in 1964 on the inside door opening of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Renegade has always represented the rebellious heart and soul of the Jeep brand.

Positioned between Liberty’s Sport and Limited models, the new Jeep Liberty Renegade expands the Jeep Liberty lineup, delivering renowned capability – highlighted by Jeep’s Selec-Trac® II full-time, shift-on-the-fly, active four-wheel-drive system – in a unique, premium and rugged new design.

Jeep Liberty Renegade is offered in a new, Renegade-exclusive Salsa Red Pearl Coat exterior, as well as Natural Green Pearl Coat, Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Standard Liberty Renegade exterior features include painted Mineral Gray Keystone 16-inch wheels that wear new, rugged all-terrain P235/70R16 outline white letter (OWL); dark neutral metallic wheel flares, lower side sills, front and rear fascia, body side moldings and rear license plate bar; black headlamp bezel; Argent Silver accent on the lower fascia appliqué and roof rack; Satin Black vinyl hood graphics; deep-tint glass; fog lamps; skid plates and tow hooks.

Inside, standard appointments include new premium cloth seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, instrument panel grab handle and park-brake boot; new driftwood accent bezels; leather-wrapped center console and soft-door armrests; premium Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC); cruise control; security alarm; rear cargo cover and steering-wheel-mounted radio controls.

Jeep Liberty Renegade’s standard Selec-Trac II active four-wheel-drive system offers customers the benefit of a fully electronic two-speed active transfer case and Brake-traction Control System (BTCS). It instantly anticipates wheel slip and redirects torque accordingly, which is ideal for off-roading or when driving in inclement weather.

This premium system offers a ‘4WD Auto’ mode that is ideal for full-time driving. When in 4WD Auto mode, the system uses vehicle sensors to adjust and redirect torque between front and rear axles based on real-time driving conditions, providing the vehicle with responsive tractive performance.

For added capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain or extremely poor traction surfaces, the transfer case includes a ‘4WD Low’ mode. This second-speed gear multiplies engine torque 2.72 times and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction.

Electric shifting between 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Low is accomplished with a console-mounted switch. A push-pin button is used to shift to Neutral mode.

A 3.7-liter V-6 engine is standard on all Jeep Liberty models, including the new Renegade. The 3.7-liter engine produces 210 horsepower (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

All Jeep Liberty models offer customers an ‘only-in-a-Jeep’ open-air experience, courtesy of Jeep’s industry-exclusive Sky Slider™ full-length open-canvas roof.

Jeep Wrangler Islander

After more than 20 years, the unique Islander theme returns to Jeep.

The limited-edition Jeep Wrangler Islander is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models. Based on the Wrangler Sport model, the Islander’s unique beach theme conveys open-air fun at first and every glance.

Jeep Wrangler Islander is featured in unique Surf Blue Pearl Coat, and is also available in Stone White Clear Coat, Bright Sliver Metallic Clear Coat and Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat.

Other exterior features include an Islander ‘Tiki Bob’ decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the ‘Islander’ theme of the vehicle, blackside steps and popular Moab 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch tires.

Inside, Islander’s seats are Dark Gray with Surf Blue inserts, blue stitching and an embroidered Islander ‘Tiki Bob’ logo adorning the seat back. Blue stitching also has been added to the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with Mopar® rubber floor mats completing the beach theme.

The Jeep Wrangler Islander option package is available at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $1,120.

Jeep Wrangler Mountain

Further expanding the iconic Wrangler brand’s reach, Jeep delivers another high-impact, limited-edition model with the Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition is based on the Wrangler Sport S package, and is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models.

Exterior features include a unique ‘Mountain’ decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the ‘Mountain’ theme of the vehicle; painted high-gloss Mineral Gray 17-inch Moab wheels, grille and bumper appliqués; tubular side steps; 32-inch tires; black tail lamp guards; and a fuel-filler door from Mopar.

Available exterior colors include Rescue Green Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat.

Interior features include an embossed seat insert with embroidered ‘Mountain logo,’ and anodized graphite heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) rings.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain option package will be available at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $1,820.
