The Lexus LF-LC Hybrid Sport Coupe Concept has proved a head-turning success at theDetroit motor show (NAIAS), being honoured with the annual EyesOn Design Award for best concept car.

It is an excellent reward for the team at Lexus’s Calty studio inCalifornia, which created the 2+2 coupe. Their aim was to explore how a future redefinition of Lexus design might take a more emotive and avant garde approach and harness new and advanced technologies.

Elements of the new Lexus design language introduced in the new GS 450h can be witnessed in the concept, notably the strong interpretation of the “spindle” grille shape and the rear architecture.

Kevin Hunter, Calty President, said: “The LF-LC was a dream car to design and a true collaborative effort at Calty. It is an honour to have that work recognised by our peers and to receive the award.

Mark Templin, Lexus US Group Vice President and General Manager, said: “The LF-LC is a striking design and breathtaking in its beauty. The team at Lexus quickly fell in love with this concept vehicle and it’s rewarding to see that the industry agreed. Receiving the EyesOn Design Award is a great start to what promises to be a fantastic year for Lexus.”

The EyesOn Design Awards are judged by a group of world leading automotive designers and design academics, and are given in recognition of skills and creativity in different areas of design for both concept and production vehicles, including Aesthetics and Innovation, Concept Implementation, Functionailty and the Spirit of Industrial Design.

Six-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential manual shift function and selectable drive modes

Equipped with the same innovations and safety features as the new GS 450h

To be launched in the UK alongside new GS 450h in June 2012

Lexus has revealed a further extension of its all-new GS luxury saloon range with the unveiling of the GS 250 at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition.

The GS 250 is powered by a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine with D-4S direct port injection and Dual VVT-i intelligent valve timing. Maximum output is 206bhp at 6,400rpm and peak torque of 253Nm is delivered at 4,800rpm, giving the car nought to 62mph acceleration in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 142mph. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 31.7mpg and CO2 emissions are 207g/km.

The engine is matched to Lexus’s Super ECT-i close-ratio intelligent six-speed automatic transmission, with a sequential manual shift function. The system has been engineered to deliver faster shift speeds, earlier torque converter lock-up and downshift throttle blips, complimenting a range of different drive modes available through the GS 250’s Drive Mode Select System.

Compared the current GS, the new model has a more spacious interior, with notably more head and legroom for rear seat passengers. It will be offered with a range of new technology features, including a 12.3-inch multimedia screen – the largest on the market. It will be available with a new S-flow air conditioning system with nanoe air purifying technology, and a new Mark Levinson audio system with up to 17 speakers.

The new GS delivers improved driving dynamics thanks to a bodyshell that has been rendered 14 per cent more rigid; front and rear suspension revisions; and an optimised seating position for the driver. The driver can also adjust vehicle behaviour to suit road conditions and driving preferences using the Drive Mode Select. This gives the option of Eco, Normal and Sport S modes, while versions equipped with Adaptive Variable Suspension offer a further Sport S+ mode for even more dynamic performance.

Safety provisions will include Lexus’s advanced Pre-Crash Safety system, combined with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, and a series of other systems designed to reduce the risk of an accident, including Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Lexus Night View.

The new GS 250 will be launched in the UK at the same time as the full hybrid GS 450h in June 2012; the range will include a performance-themed F Sport version. Further details will be announced nearer the time of launch.

Lexus has added some extra visual muscle, introduced more top-flight equipment features and sharpened up the handling of its CT 200h full hybrid premium compact model to create the CT 200h F-Sport.

While the new model’s looks are bolder and more attention grabbing, there is no penalty to pay in the combined low emissions, fuel efficiency and low cost of ownership performance that make CT 200h an unmatched proposition in one of the car market’s most competitive segments.

On the outside the CT 200h F-Sport makes its presence known with 17-inch dark-finish alloys, a larger rear spoiler, flared side skirts, a mesh front grille and new aero-styled bumpers front and rear. In the cabin the distinguishing features include an F-Sport steering wheel with a flat bottom section and aluminium pedals and scuff plates.

Adding to the specification of the SE-L grade, the F-Sport gains cruise control, F-Sport black leather upholstery, heated front seats, electric driver’s seat adjustment, auto-dimming (electrochromatic) electrically retractable door mirrors and a rear parking camera that links to a display in the rear-view mirror. And if that isn’t enough, owners can ramp up the specification with the option of an advanced HDD navigation system combined with Lexus’s Remote Touch control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, back guide monitor and 10-speaker audio package. Front and rear parking sensors and a sunroof are also available.

Lexus has tuned the CT 200h F-Sport’s suspension for a more engaging drive, and fitted its lateral damping system as standard. Coil spring rates have been changed and the standard Showa shock absorbers replaced with Kayaba dampers that give more sports-oriented performance.

The lateral dampers, unique in the CT 200h’s class, help minimise body vibrations, leading to a more linear steering feel and rewarding driving experience, as well as greater comfort for everyone on board.

Headline performance from the new F-Sport matches its CT 200h sister models with a zero-road-tax 94g/km CO2 emissions and 68.9mpg official combined cycle fuel consumption. And, as the only full hybrid in its class, it can run for up to a mile in slow moving traffic on its electric power alone, reducing fuel use and tailpipe emissions to zero.

The new Lexus CT 200h F-Sport is available to order now, with first UK deliveries in January. On-the-road prices are from £27,850.

The proof is in the driving: the Lexus LFA, equipped with the Nürburgring Package of aerodynamic and handling enhancements, has conquered the famous German race track from which it takes its name with a new fastest lap for a current, regular production car.

LFA test driver and professional racer Akira Iida recorded a lap time of 7:14.64 in a fully road-legal car, running on standard specification Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tyres.

The result, posted on 31 August during a performance test, demonstrates Lexus’s success in honing its two-seater supercar for track-focused handling, by introducing a range of aerodynamic features and fine-tuning the car’s suspension.

Commenting on the result, Iida said: “We are delighted with this achievement. Our on-going development of the LFA and our recent outings at the Nürburgring 24 Hour race have enabled us to continue to tune the vehicle. The result with the LFA Nürburgring Package shows the car’s ultimate performance and agility. This is a first activity of its type for Lexus and the constant effort of the team has brought this fantastic result.”

The Nürburgring Package will be fitted to 50 of the 500 LFA that are being built, with customer deliveries from next year. It includes a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) front spoiler and fixed rear wing, track-tuned suspension and custom wheels. Compared to the standard LFA, output from the 4.8-litre V10 engine has been increased from 552 to 562bhp, maintaining the car’s 3.7-second nought to 62mph acceleration time.

Haruhiko Tanahashi, LFA Chief Engineer, said: “The LFA Nürburgring Package is the culmination of our extensive testing programme and we have appreciated the opportunities to use the Nürburgring Nordschleife to strengthen and develop the LFA into the vehicle it is today. The development team’s obsession, Iida-san’s concentration and good course conditions all led to our achieving this record.”

Lexus unveiled the new GS at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California on Thursday, 18 August. The car will reach the UK market in 2012.

The new GS brings a more engaging driving experience, bolder design and a more spacious, contemporary interior, heralding a new chapter in the history of Lexus.

Starting with the bold spindle grille – set to be a signature feature of future Lexus models – the new GS conveys an air of confidence. This is supported by a redesigned chassis with a wide, strong stance that clearly signals the new GS is designed to inspire and reward driver participation with crisp and precise handling.

Lexus engineers challenged themselves to develop a more spacious interior environment for the new GS. Leaving exterior dimensions virtually unchanged, they increased cabin and boot space to create a richly appointed interior that will transport passengers and their luggage in comfort, regardless of distance.

The new Lexus GS will be launched in early 2012, including hybrid and F-Sport versions. For the UK there will be the GS 450h full hybrid and GS 250 petrol engined derivatives. Details will be announced later this year.

A New Personality, An Invitation To Drive
Designing the new GS to be both strong and agile was a key focus of the engineering team. Their main objective was to provide a more engaging driving experience. To achieve this they created a new aerodynamic body, a wider stance and stiffer structure, a transmission with quicker changes and distinctive engine sound and exhaust note.

The revised platform is more rigid compared to the current model thanks to an increased number of spot welds and adding laser welds in very specific locations. The track, wider by 40mm at the front and 50mm at the rear, works in combination with a revised suspension design to give a more assured stance and superior cornering performance.

The new suspension system is designed to guide the GS through corners with precision. In the front, aluminium upper and lower control arms employ larger bushings. The rear subframe has been completely redesigned to accommodate an all-new multi-link rear suspension, the improved geometry enhancing rear-end control. With the stiffer platform and lighter components, the shock absorbers can use lighter-viscosity oil, responding faster to small inputs.

The use of aluminium reduces unsprung weight and results in significantly improved agility, ride comfort, body control and steering precision. Ventilated disc brakes featuring four-piston aluminum front calipers are equipped with the latest electronic enhancements to provide braking balance and control.

Attention To Detail
The precisely sculpted exterior of new GS fuses distinctive style with engineering functionality, expressing a new generation of Lexus’ design philosophy which will be applied to future models.

This is evident in details such as the fins incorporated into the side of the tail lamps and the design of the boot area, each helping to direct air over and past the car.

The signature spindle grille with its trapezoidal contours integrates into the aggressive front bumper to allow for efficient airflow. This distinctive Lexus design feature, combined with the deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps, express the vehicle’s confident and dynamic character. The headlamps use a projector beam design, adding a strong, chiseled appearance and excellent illumination.

From the side, the GS projects the image of a spacious performance saloon with a road-hugging stance. The tapered lower door sills and the short front overhang give the vehicle a sense of motion while width-enhancing wheel arches add an athletic stance, suggesting the vehicle’s dynamic abilities.

The rear bumper features a diffuser and centered aero fins to help control underbody airflow. Combined with the L-shaped LED tail lamps, a Lexus design cue, these rear bumper features lend a high-performance appearance.

Even the paint technology has been developed to make subtle bodylines more noticeable and the surface appear finely polished. New colours will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that adds a high level of brilliance to the paint. Lexus engineers also developed a new coating technology which makes the paint appear more radiant, the additional metallic texture giving both strong shading and defined, sharp highlights.

Spacious Interior with Premium Upgrades
Painstaking attention to detail has been applied to the GS cabin to create a balance of luxury, technological amenity and emotional design. Focused around the driver and the driving experience, it also provides more space for all occupants, increasing the comfort of both front and rear passengers. The new layout of the long, sculpted dash gives the driver and front passenger a sense of roominess through its clean centre stack and large high-resolution display screen. Most of the comfort and convenience controls such as audio and climate are relocated to provide a cleaner and more sophisticated dash layout.

A redesigned seat frame and changes to the steering column give increased comfort and better forward visibility to the driver. Revised door openings offer easier entry and exit and boot access is improved with a wider, deeper opening. Luggage capacity has been increased by almost 25 per cent.

The interior includes a number of embedded premium features as standard equipment. A new energy-saving auto climate control system called S-Flow uses the occupant-detection system to focus airflow only to the front area where passengers are actually seated, a first-in-class technology. A next-generation Remote Touch with one-push confirmation is standard on all models and enables smooth, intuitive operation of climate, audio and phone controls as well as use of the navigation system and more. A standard reversing camera helps add security and convenience.

The finely crafted cabin detail is complemented by ambient lighting that unobtrusively welcomes and guides the user into the vehicle, providing a carefully designed experience. New white LED lights are sequentially lit to illuminate the areas around the doors, centre console and footwells. A new analogue clock, carved from an ingot, adds an unexpected touch.

Cabin materials include three types of wood and meticulously detailed contrast stitching is used as a visual accent around the interior to create a rich, tailored interior space.

Integrated Safety Systems
In addition to enhanced braking systems and an impact-absorbing body structure, the new GS offers significant advances in both passive and active safety systems as standard equipment.

Among the class-leading 10 airbags in the new GS, there are knee airbags for both driver and front passenger. Rear seat occupants have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupants are equipped with side curtain airbags.

New Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats increase the likelihood that occupants will be in the optimum position at the moment of impact, enhancing the protective effect of the seatbelt system. Standard seatbelts with pretensioners with force limiters used for front and outboard rear seats add to occupant protection.

Options include a pre-collision system, which uses the dynamic radar cruise control system to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision. The system also uses a first-in-class infrared camera to monitor the driver’s eyes. If the driver is not looking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will sound a warning sooner than otherwise. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate manoeuvre, the system will initiate braking up to two seconds prior to impact, helping to lessen the severity of the collision.

Other available safety systems include a Night Vision System that enhances driver visibility in the dark; Head-Up Display (HUD); a Blind Spot Monitor that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). GS is the first in its segment to offer LKA with active steering torque to provide a small assistance in maintaining course, while the LDW feature alerts drivers if they begin to drift out of their lane.

Seamless Connectivity
Next-generation Lexus multimedia brings a host of standard entertainment and connectivity enhancements, including enhanced Bluetooth® capability with automatic phonebook download and streaming audio.

GS drivers will get DVD audio and video compatibility, MP3 sound enhancement, 5.1 Surround Sound, and a high-resolution eight-inch central control display centrally located high up in the instrument panel.

Cars fitted with the navigation system will have an industry-first 12.3-inch high-resolution multi-media screen, large enough to support simultaneous, split-screen viewing of a large map display, plus audio, climate or other vehicle information.

For the ultimate in audio performance, an 835-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is available. The system provides 7.1 Surround Sound through 10 channels using a new class D Digital amplifier and efficient Green Edge™ speakers that are lighter, more energy-efficient and have less distortion. The new system produces almost three times as many watts per channel versus the previous generation.

A unique, full hybrid Lexus LS 600h Landaulet fitted with a one-piece transparent polycarbonate roof will serve as the official royal wedding car when His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco marries Carlene Wittstock in Monte Carlo on 2 July.

The conversion was undertaken by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet, working closely with Lexus engineers based in Brussels. The project took more than 2,000 hours to complete, with a focus on maintaining the levels of quality and technological sophistication that are fundamental to every Lexus, and preserving the performance, safety and dynamic attributes of the original LS 600h L.

The process began with computer-aided design calculation, simulations and 3D modelling. Reinforcing the bodyshell required extensive use of honeycomb structures Kevlar and carbon fibre composite materials to achieve suitable chassis stiffness and torsional rigidity following the removal of the roof and pillars.

Composite parts have to be cured at very high temperatures and these were literally ‘cooked’ on to the bare chassis in a specially prepared oven. This meant that first, much of the vehicle had to be dismantled, with around 20,000 mechanical parts, electric component and interior features and upholstery being stripped out. Re-assembly was carried out under close supervision of a Lexus engineering team to ensure consistency with original vehicle specifications and performance. Prior to re-assembly, the car was finished in an elegant Midnight Blue livery, applied by hand using several coats of a bespoke, water-based paint, adding to the car’s environmental credentials.

The transparent roof presented a challenge in both design, as a large, single piece with no reinforcements or pillars, and in manufacturing. To make the roof, Lexus sought co-operation with a French company that specialises in supplying similar components to the aerospace industry, such as helicopter windscreens and fighter jet canopies.

The roof is a single, lightweight polycarbonate shell that is 8mm thick and weighs just 26kg. Fixed to the body of the Lexus through two intermediary parts, it allows a perfect view in and out of the car.

A template was made in a honeycomb structure and carbon fibre to validate the roof’s shape and structural integrity and to ensure a perfect fit with tolerances of less than 1mm. Once the design was complete, robotic tools were used to produce the canopy and fit it to the Landaulet in a completely automated process.

The final stage of the conversion, re-assembly and finishing took a team of 10 specialists working with Lexus engineers more than two weeks to complete, to ensure the highest quality levels were achieved.

On the day of the wedding the LS 600h Landaulet will be used by the royal couple to tour the principality after the marriage ceremony. For most of this distance the car will operate in its fully electric mode, with zero tailpipe emissions. After the celebrations the car will be displayed at the Media Centre and later the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.

The legendary Nürburgring will host the racing debut of Lexus’s full hybrid CT tomorrow (14 May) when the luxury hatchback lines up on the starting grid for a gruelling endurance race.

Primed by Gazoo Racing, the motorsport specialists responsible for the racing Lexus LFA, the CT is competing in the Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy, contested over six hours on one of racing’s most daunting circuits. Almost 200 cars are expected to line up for the start.

Competing in the SP4 Class, the GAZOO Racing CT, like its road-going sister CT 200h model, features Lexus Hybrid Drive, but with a higher capacity 2.4-litre petrol engine instead of the usual 1.8 unit. The batteries and hybrid system are identical to the road car. At start-up and under braking, the race car uses just its electric motor, producing zero tailpipe emissions and using no fuel. The combustion engine seamlessly takes over at higher speeds with the electric motor providing extra power when accelerating and at racing speeds.

Throughout its operation, the Lexus full hybrid system intelligently selects the most appropriate power source and also captures energy through regenerative braking to charge the battery, which in turn powers the electric motor.

Thanks to Lexus Hybrid Drive, the GAZOO Racing CT will require less fuel and will emit lower levels of CO2 and harmful NOx than any equivalent petrol or diesel race car.

Lexus remains the only car manufacturer to compete in major endurance races with full hybrid cars, starting with the Lexus RX 400h which contested the Nürburgring24 Hours in 2005.

The GAZOO Racing CT driver line-up features three experienced pilots: Kumi Sato, a female racer who competed in a Lexus IS 250 in 2008; Masahiko Kageyama, who previously supported Toyota’s vehicle development programme; and MinoruTakaki, who is responsible for production vehicle development.

Cost of ownership
The CT 200h’s class-leading cost of ownership profile is underpinned by its low emissions performance, which qualifies it for a zero annual Vehicle Excise duty (road tax) charge, plus the bonus of exemption from the London congestion charge.

The benefits extend to company car drivers, who enjoy the lowest, 10 per cent rating for benefit-in-kind company car tax, and for fleet operators, who earn the advantage of a first-year 100 per cent write down allowance against corporation tax. Factor in the CT 200h’s impressive fuel economy (68.9mpg official combined cycle figure), and designed-in low service, maintenance and repair costs, and you have a package that offers a clear cost advantage over its segment rivals.

Service intervals are annually or at every 10,000 miles, which helps maximise component lifetime. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system is engineered for low maintenance requirements and the hybrid battery is designed to last the lifetime of the car.

To celebrate the LFA’s hat-trick of class wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours race, Lexus has created the Nürburgring Package, an array of aerodynamic features, suspension adjustments and revisions to the 4.8-litre V10 engine that give the supercar a more track-focused profile. Shown in public for the first time at the Geneva motor show, the performance option is available on just 50 of the 500 cars that will be built. These versions will be crafted during 2012, the second full year of LFA production.

To sharpen the car’s circuit driving performance even further by increasing downforce at high speed, the Nürburgring Package introduces modifications and additions to several key carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components. These include a larger front spoiler, fin-type side spoilers, a canard fin and a fixed rear wing.

To ensure the LFA maintains its 3.7-second acceleration time from nought to 62mph, in spite of the increased drag, the V10 engine has been revised to increase maximum power by 10bhp to 562bhp. Shift times in the six-speed sequential transmission are just 0.15 seconds.

In terms of handling modifications, the package features suspension tuning and a 10mm reduction in the ride height. Exclusive mesh-type wheels are introduced, fitted with dedicated high-grip tyres.

Exterior colour choices are restricted to matte black, black, white or orange, with interiors finished in black and red, black and purple and all-black. Cars delivered in Europe will feature a carbon fibre centre console and door trims, with carbon fibre sports seats finished in Alcantara.

Customers who specify the package will also be offered one-to-one driving tuition from a Nürburgring chief instructor and a year’s pass to enjoy their car on the famous Nordschleife circuit.

CFRP parts manufacturing

LFA production began in December with just one hand-crafted car completed per day. A team of 175 people are involved in CFRP parts manufacturing, vehicle assembly and painting.

CFRP is exceptionally strong, rigid and lightweight, and accounts for about 65 per cent of the LFA’s body structure weight. This amounts to a saving of about 100kg, compared an equivalent all-aluminium body.

Lexus is producing and assembling the CFRP components in-house, with a view to future development of the technology. It is a time-consuming process, compared to working with steel or aluminium, but the LFA project provides a valuable test bed for new, automated processes which will be used in the manufacture of future Lexus and Toyota models.

Different manufacturing technologies are used according the shape, role and required properties of each component.

Pre-preg: this is an industry-standard composite sheet material made of carbon fibre, pre-impregnated with epoxy resin. It is used for the LFA’s main structural elements, such as the dash, side and cross-members and panels.
Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM): this is dry sheet fabrication, with epoxy resin injected into the mould. It is mainly employed in the LFA’s secondary main frames, such as the crash boxes, roof side rails and vehicle floor.
Carbon fibre – Sheet Moulding Compound (C-SMC): this is used for fabricating the upper body components and frames that have complex geometries.
Adhesive bonding

The LFA assembly line moves through five consecutive processes, each of which has been digitally validated. For the first four – sub-assembly, underbody, small aluminium parts and main body – adhesive bonding is used. Final assembly of the aluminium parts is by mechanical fastening.

This is the first time Lexus has used adhesive bonding for main body assembly, a process that has required new quality control measures to be implemented to ensure each of the five stages involved in the bonding meets the required criteria.

Even more appealing is the fact that, comparing like for like specifications, the V6 petrol-powered IS 250 is more keenly priced than the BMW 320i and 325i SE, with the IS 200d diesel – returning an official 134g/km CO2 emissions and 55.4mpg combined cycle fuel economy – offering better specification than the BMW 318d SE and the Audi A4 2.0 TDI 140 Technik.

Factor in Lexus’s unchallenged industry-leading customer service, and hallmark comfort, quality and refinement and the new IS Advance models become an even stronger proposition. The Lexus IS 250 and 200d Advance are on sale now.

The world’s largest custom car show celebrated the sporting side of Lexus at the weekend with five tuned and modified cars on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Even though its public launch is still a few months away, the new CT 200h was revealed in special F-Sport guise, with an array of sporting accessories including alloy wheels, a body kit by Modellista and Recaro sports seats.

It was joined by two new versions of the ultra-high performance IS F: the CCS-R (Circuit Club Sport Racer) and Club Performance Accessory.

The CCS-R is true to the tradition of lightweight track saloons, featuring carbon fibre body panels, including front and rear spoilers, bonnet and boot lid, and a new frameless construction roll cage and polycarbonate windows. Inside there’s further extensive use of carbon fibre for the dashboard, centre console and door trims, while the racing details extend to a six-point safety harness and short-diameter steering wheel with paddle shifts. The car is performance-engineered, too, with racing suspension, brakes, cooling and exhaust, plus a mechanical limited-slip differential and forged alloys shod with slick tyres.

TRD (Toyota Racing Department) has created the IS F Club Performance Accessory, giving the most powerful member of the IS family an even bolder appearance with spoilers fore and aft, a rear diffuser and a carbon fibre hood. Again, more carbon fibre material is used in the cabin, along with sports seats finished in bright orange. Sports suspension and brakes, a titanium exhaust, magnesium wheels and a mechanical LSD complete the package.

Gazoo Racing presented its racing version of the Lexus LFA supercar, which enjoyed success at last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours race, and TOM’s offered a new interpretation of the LS 460 limousine.

As the first full hybrid in its segment, it will deliver unprecedented benefits in total ownership costs, beyond anything its rivals can offer.

Thanks to the low emissions performance and high fuel efficiency of CT 200h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive system, owners can take advantage of zero annual road tax charges and lower company car benefit-in-kind rates. It also has the distinction of being the only premium model with automatic transmission to be exempt from the London congestion charge. What’s more, its low emissions performance demands no compromise in the luxury, comfort and convenience features premium segment customers expect.

More money can be saved through the car’s design for low service, maintenance and repair (SMR) costs and predicted residual values that match the current class leaders.

CT 200h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive has low maintenance requirements designed-in. There is no starter motor or alternator, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) means there is no conventional clutch and there is no concern about diesel particulate filter performance. Furthermore, the regenerative braking system helps extend the life of the brake pads to an average 70,000 miles. The hybrid components are covered by a five-year/60,000-mile warranty.

Cost comparison – Benefit-in-Kind taxation over three years
CT 200h’s sub-100g/km CO2 emissions (94g/km subject to homologation) mean that it attracts benefit-in-kind company car taxation at only 10 per cent. The impact of this compared to the tax charges on its main market rivals over three years is shown in the table below: in terms of tax, CT 200h can save a company car driver more than £90 a month.

Cost comparison – Retail, Company Car Driver and Company Car Operator
The new CT 200h can deliver cost savings to private owners, company car driver and company car operators, thanks to its combination of low emissions-linked taxation, high fuel economy and residual values, low service, maintenance and repair costs and a 100 per cent write-down allowance against Corporation Tax in the first year.

The table below shows that, compared to its principal rivals, CT 200h can save drivers more than £3,000 over three years or 60,000 miles. And for businesses choosing it as a fleet car, the savings can be well in excess of £7,000.

In the UK the CT 200h is available in three equipment grades, SE-I, SE-L and SE-L Premier. Across the board equipment specifications reflect Lexus’s focus on peerless quality and refinement, plus segment-leading safety provisions.

On-the-road pricing starts at £23,485 for the SE-I model, inclusive of VAT at 20 per cent. This takes into account the fact that, although orders may be placed now, the sales tax rate must be applied at the time of delivery – the first cars will reach customers early in 2011. The competitive pricing aside, ownership costs are kept low thanks to the high fuel efficiency and ultra-low emissions performance of the Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain: producing 94g/km* of carbon dioxide, the CT 200h earns a Band

A rating for Vehicle Excise Duty – hence a zero annual road tax bill and a 10 per cent Benefit-in-Kind charge for company car tax payers.

Equipment specifications

High equipment specifications are an established feature of all Lexus models and the new CT 200h sustains this reputation across all three model grades – SE-I, SE-L and SE-L Premier.

Of particular note are the first-in-segment LED headlights fitted as standard to the SE-L Premier and the availability of Lexus’s advanced radar-controlled Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The CT 200h also adopts Lexus’s Remote Touch multi-function control, for simple and intuitive operation of ventilation, navigation, phone and vehicle set-up systems.

For all CT 200h grades, customers can choose between the 16in alloy wheels, optimised for a refined and comfortable driving experience, and the 17in alloy wheels, for more agility and dynamic appeal.

Competitor price and specification comparison

As well as commanding an advantage in terms of fuel economy and low emissions, the Lexus CT 200h offers motorists a competitive price advantage, when like-for-like specifications are compared. For example, to meet the equipment features of the CT 200h SE-I – the model expected to account for the majority of sales – BMW 118d SE drivers would need to find almost an extra £1,700.

Lexus is launching two voluntary recalls in the UK, affecting its IS, GS and RX models. It is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to contact registered owners and keepers by letter to advise them of the procedure for taking their vehicle to a Lexus Centre or an Official Lexus Service Outlet for the necessary repair work to be done.

The first recall concerns the brake master cylinder fitted to IS, GS and RX models built between February 2003 and November 2005. Lexus is aware that the seal between the brake master cylinder and the brake booster may turn in its seat, causing brake fluid to leak into the brake booster. In the very unlikely event that this happens, the driver will be alerted to the problem by the low brake fluid warning light. The brakes will continue to function normally for a significant time – over 200 miles of regular driving. Lexus knows of no accidents caused by this issue.

The repair involves the replacement of a small seal and a check for any fluid contamination in the brake booster. If any contamination is found, the brake booster will be replaced. The job will take approximately two hours to complete, at no cost to the customer. Approximately 15,400 UK registered vehicles are affected by this recall.

The second recall concerns the fuel pump on GS 300 models built between September 2004 and February 2006. Expansion and contraction of the fuel tank may stretch the fuel pump’s electrical harness. This may lead to a break in the circuit, causing the fuel pump, and so the engine, to stop without warning. Lexus knows of no reported accidents as a result of this issue.

The repair involves replacement of the fuel pump wiring harness, a job that takes about three hours. The work will be done at no cost to the customer. The recall affects 2,081 UK-registered cars.

Belinda Poole, Lexus Director, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience or concern these recalls may cause our customers. Our Lexus Centres will be liaising with our customers to carry out the recall repair procedures as promptly as possible, with all work undertaken by expertly trained Lexus service personnel.”

The Lexus CT 200h is the first full hybrid vehicle to be launched at the heart of the small luxury car segment. It is also Lexus’s first compact five-door car and takes its place as the new gateway model for the Lexus range.

Designed and engineered for a sporty, rewarding drive, with Lexus’s hallmark levels of quality and comfort, it will attract younger customers to the brand. Specifically designed and developed with the European market in mind, the CT 200h’s size, packaging, full hybrid technology and ultra-low emissions address the key preferences of a young, highly discerning and environmentally conscious customer base. At the same time, no compromise has been made in the levels of refinement and driving pleasure that are synonymous with Lexus.

Following its presentation at the Paris motor show, the Lexus CT 200h will be available to order from October, with first deliveries to customers early in the New Year. Full details of UK prices and specifications will be announced mid October.

Lexus Hybrid Drivepowertrain

The Lexus CT 200h is a full hybrid, capable of running on its petrol engine or electric motor alone, or with both working in combination. The Lexus Hybrid Drive features an energy management system which delivers remarkably quiet operation, seamless acceleration and the sporty performance expected by customers in the small luxury car segment.

The system comprises an Atkinson cycle 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and a powerful electric motor that in combination deliver 134bhp, together with a 202V battery and a power control unit. A power split device automatically combines and reallocates power from the engine, electric motor and generator, as driving conditions demand.

The electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration, or drives the wheels on its own when EV mode is selected. In EV mode the CT 200h produces no harmful tailpipe emissions and can be driven for up to a mile-and-a-half at speeds up to 28mph. During deceleration and braking the electric motor works as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking.

Driving through an electronic continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), the system gives the CT 200h nought to 62mph acceleration in 10.3 seconds (target figure). Combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for CT 200h in the UK are 68.9mpg and a class-leading 96g/km respectively (provisional figures).

Driving moods and modes

The Lexus CT 200h has been engineered to perform in two different driving “moods”, Relaxing or Dynamic, supported by four selectable driving modes: NORMAL, EV, ECO and SPORT.

From start-up and at speeds less the 28mph, CT 200h automatically operates in EV mode; the driver can also select EV mode manually. When the car reaches the limit of its range under electric power, or exceeds 28mph, it automatically switches the petrol engine back on.

In ECO mode throttle response to accelerator pedal input is reduced and the air conditioning control is adjusted to maximise fuel economy. According to driving conditions, ECO mode encourages a relaxed driving style and can help the driver achieve a significant saving in fuel.

SPORT mode is tuned to deliver extra electric motor power to contribute to the Dynamic driving mood, with the supply voltage boosted by 150V to a maximum 650V. Engine revs are held longer and the throttle and electric power steering (EPS) settings are adjusted for quicker response and extra feedback. Operation of the Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is also rendered less intrusive. To help emphasise the change in mood, when the driver selects SPORT the instrument cluster backlighting switches from blue to red and the hybrid power indicator transforms into a rev counter.

Vehicle dynamics

The CT 200h has been developed specifically to deliver superior handling, a rewarding drive and the level of ride comfort expected of a Lexus. It is built on a new platform, has been given the lowest possible centre of gravity and features a high-rigidity lightweight bodyshell. Even the height, position and structure of the driver’s seat have been precisely determined to contribute to the car’s balance and enhance the driving experience.

To counter the level of vibration associated with a highly rigid body, Lexus has designed an optional lateral performance damper system – a first for the small luxury car segment. Used in place of fixed bracing, this features horizontal dampers located between the front suspension towers and the left and right sides of the rear structural frame.

Suspension

The CT 200h has a bespoke suspension design, comprising an L-arm MacPherson strut front system and a new, independent double wishbone and trailing arm set-up at the rear. Together they support the car’s driving moods, combining the ride comfort essential to the Relaxing mood with the handling agility and stability appropriate for the Dynamic mood.

Steering

The lightweight, energy-saving Electric Power Steering is powered by the hybrid battery and contributes to overall fuel economy by only consuming power when steering force assistance is required.

The steering is direct, with a 14.6:1 ratio and just 2.7 turns lock-to-lock. When the driver selects SPORT mode, the EPS automatically adapts the level of steering assistance, giving more direct feedback.

Aerodynamics

Computer aided design and wind tunnel testing were used to ensure the CT 200h achieved the best possible aerodynamic performance. Attention to detail both on the bodywork and underneath the car resulted in a coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.29, which in turn supports fuel efficiency and reduces wind noise.-

Design

Elegance and excitement were the watchwords for the CT 200h’s design, which is the latest interpretation of Lexus’s L-finesse design language. Supporting the aim of bringing a younger generation of customers to the brand, the intention was to give the new car a dynamic, sporty quality. Overall the car measures 4,320mm long, 1,765mm wide and 1,440mm high, with a 2,600mm wheelbase.

At the front key features include a grille that is pushed forward of the headlamps to give a stronger visual integration with the centre section of the bumper. The lights themselves are set at a higher level than the grille – a styling feature shared by the latest Lexus models – and comprise (according to grade) either single halogen or double LED low beam lamps – a first for the segment – with integrated LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive arrowhead shape.

The sweeping lines of the body not only give the CT 200h a dynamic appearance, they play a key part in the car’s overall aerodynamic efficiency.

In profile the CT 200h is distinguished by a steeply raked windscreen, long, flowing roofline, sweeping character lines and Lexus’s slingshot window graphic. The compact door mirrors have integrated LED turn indicator lights. At the rear there is a pronounced step in the tailgate which flows from the wheelarch shoulders, emphasising the wraparound rear window design and the car’s firmly planted stance. The tail lights incorporate the L-shaped motif Lexus introduced in the LS limousine.

L-finesse design cues carry through to the CT 200h’s interior, where the dashboard is divided into an upper Display Zone, with a seven-inch LCD multi-display screen, and a lower Operation Zone, including the shift lever and system controls. The cabin is airy and spacious, but the driver sits in a snug cockpit which creates a focused driving environment.

Driver and front passenger enjoy class-leading head clearance and shoulder room, while at the rear the leg and headroom have been maximised by designing thinner front seatbacks and flatter centre sections for the rear seats. The CT 200h’s flat rear floor adds to the roominess.

Thanks to the hybrid battery being set as low as possible beneath the floor of the boot and the use of a trailing arm double wishbone suspension design with minimal intrusion in the loadspace, the CT 200h offers a competitive 375-litre luggage capacity. Fold the 60:40 rear seats flat and up to 985 litres of space is available.

Safety

The CT 200h offers the highest level of safety equipment in its segment and is designed to meet the highest, five-star Euro NCAP independent crash test standard for all-round protection of occupants and pedestrians.

In a first for the C-segment, the car can be specified with Lexus’s pre-emptive Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS), with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). PCS uses millimetre-wave radar monitoring of the road ahead to detect potential hazards and assist the driver in reducing the risk of a collision. If the system determines a high risk of an impact, it will alert the driver, pretension the seatbelts and, as the driver

applies the brakes, deliver supplementary brake assist. If the driver fails to brake and a collision is inevitable, PCS will automatically apply the brakes to reduce impact speed.

ACC works in tandem with PCS at speeds between 31 and 106mph, maintaining a safe, pre-set distance from the vehicle in front. Once the road ahead is clear, the CT 200h returns automatically to the selected cruising speed.

Standard active safety features include ABS with Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). Eight airbags are fitted, including knee airbags for driver and front passenger. All five seats feature seatbelts with emergency locking retractors, with the front and outer rear seat belts additionally equipped with pretensioners and force limiters.

Paris Motor Show

On sale through Lexus retailers from October, the Paris Motor Show marks the official market launch of the new CT 200h. Lexus will host a press conference on its stand in Hall 4 of the show at 9.00am on Thursday 30 September.

Change for change’s sake is rarely worthwhile, particularly when you are dealing with such a well-defined concept as Lexus’s ultra-high performance IS F sports saloon. So it is that the new 2011 IS F differs from its predecessor in only a few well-thought-out details.

The principal change is that the mighty 417bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine has been brought in line with Euro 5 emissions standards, a task accomplished without impacting on its performance. The IS F, equipped with an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission, maintains its nought to 62mph acceleration time of 4.8 seconds and 168mph (electronically limited) top speed; CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are also unaffected.

For 2010 the car’s handling and stability were enhanced with the addition of a limited slip differential; in the latest raft of engineering adjustments, the front and rear coil springs and shock absorbers have been revised to improve ride comfort. The rear suspension geometry has also been tweaked to gain greater stability under higher loads when accelerating, braking and cornering. The result is all-round advances in damping control, cornering stability and steering response.

The IS F’s high intensity discharge (HID) headlights are now paired with new LED daytime running lights, configured to echo Lexus’s signature arrowhead styling motif.

In the cabin the instrument binnacle has been redesigned, placing the tachometer and gear shift indicator in the centre of the display. New dark silver carbon fibre-style trim details have also been added.

The 2011 IS F is on sale now, price £57,105 on the road.

Low emissions, but no compromise in luxury and driving pleasure: Lexus’s sporty new CT 200h is expected to deliver CO2 emissions of just 96g/km*. Thanks to the exceptional efficiency of its full hybrid powertrain, the all-new hatchback outperforms all its similarly powered small luxury car rivals, none of which comes close to achieving a sub-100g/km figure.

At the same time, the CT 200h marks no compromise in Lexus’s hallmark standards of luxury, quality and comfort. More than that, this is a car that has been designed and engineered from the outset for a sporty, rewarding drive.

Unlike conventional diesel engines, the latest generation Lexus Hybrid Drive which powers the CT 200h produces near-zero levels of NOx and particulates. Preliminary fuel consumption figures further strengthen the car’s clean and efficient profile, with an anticipated 68.9mpg* in combined cycle driving.

Lower fuel bills, a Band A classification for Vehicle Excise Duty giving a zero road tax charge and a company car tax benefit-in-kind of just 10 per cent combine to give the car a compelling cost of ownership profile.

The CT 200h is built on a new platform which benefits from a series of exclusively developed body, chassis and powertrain control systems. Drivers are given the choice of Dynamic and Relaxing driving moods, via four selectable modes for the full hybrid system: Normal, Eco and EV (electric vehicle), plus a Sport setting that adjusts certain performance parameters for a more engaging drive.

Lexus designers have given the car the lowest possible centre of gravity with a high-rigidity bodyshell, a lateral performance damper system and new double wishbone rear suspension, which all contribute to delivering high speed stability, smooth and precise handling, rewarding agility and the ride comfort expected of any Lexus.

The CT 200h will be presented at the Paris motor show at the end of September and will be commercially available in the UK from October, with first deliveries to customers in the New Year.

The latest development of Lexus Hybrid Drive maintains the smoothness, refinement and high efficiency for which it is renowned, but with a choice of driving modes that let drivers tap into the car’s full dynamic potential, or opt for optimum eco-performance.

Choose your mood and your mode

The Lexus CT 200h has two distinct driving “moods” – Dynamic and Relaxing – which it adopts in line with the driver’s choice of selectable drive modes for the full hybrid system, which comprises a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine, an electric motor and an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT).

EV (electric vehicle), ECO and NORMAL modes place the emphasis on ride comfort, smooth acceleration and low NVH levels in the cabin for a relaxing drive.

Being a full hybrid, CT 200h can operate automatically in EV mode, switching off the petrol engine and running on its electric motor alone, at speeds from start-up up to 30mph. Ideal for smooth, silent progress in slow urban traffic, it can reduce tailpipe emissions to zero, with driving range determined by the level of battery charge and local conditions. EV mode can also be selected manually by the driver.

Switch to ECO mode and the car’s systems are automatically adjusted to deliver maximum efficiency. Throttle responses are moderated when the driver presses hard on the accelerator and air conditioning performance is altered to reduce its impact on fuel consumption.

SPORT mode lets the driver exploit the full potential of the CT 200h’s dynamic qualities, increasing power delivery from the electric motor and maximising performance and agility. The Power Control Unit (PCU) in the Lexus Hybrid Drive system boosts the power supply voltage to 650v, increasing overall system output, and engine revs are held higher as the driver accelerates. Settings for the throttle and Electric Power Steering (EPS) are also adjusted to give sharper response to driver inputs.

Even the look of the instrument panel changes to reflect the move to more dynamic performance: the instrument backlighting automatically shifts from hybrid blue to red and the hybrid power meter is replaced by a tachometer display.

On sale through Lexus retailers from October, the Paris Motor Show marks the official market launch of the new CT 200h.

Lexus has introduced a series of styling, technical and equipment revisions that further strengthen the full hybrid GS 450h’s appeal in the premium saloon market. It has rationalised the model line-up into two equipment grades – SE and SE-L – and introduced new exterior colour choices, alloy wheel designs and interior trims.

The GS, powered by a smooth and ultra-efficient combination of a 3.5-lire petrol V6 and a compact 650V electric motor, delivers sharp performance with fuel economy and emissions that are unmatched by its conventional petrol-powered rivals.

Revised Pre-Crash Safety system and active headrests
The Pre-Crash Safety system in the GS 450h has been revised to include pre-crash brake technology to support the established pre-crash seatbelt and brake assist functions.

Both front seats have new, inflator-operated active headrests, which are activated by a signal from the ECU should the car suffer a rear-end impact. The inflator slides a piston into the headrest, unlocks the mechanism and projects the headrest forwards and upwards to support the head and reduce the risk of whiplash injury.

Navigation and audio upgrades
In common with its sister Lexus models, the GS 450h has a new 40GB hard disc drive (HDD) navigation system, giving Europe-wide coverage with traffic information data capture in each country. The

HDD also provides 10GB of storage space for owners to create their own on-board sound library of digital audio files – room for around 2,000 music tracks.

Two audio systems are featured in the GS 450h range: a 10-speaker Lexus premium package and a 14-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System giving 5.1-channel surround sound on selected CDs and DVDs. Both systems come with a USB port and audio jack plug for full connection and integration of portable music players. The Bluetooth, provided as standard, includes an audio streaming function. As an option, owners can upgrade their audio system to receive DAB digital broadcasts.

Styling
The 2010 GS 450h has a new front grille design that features a series of horizontal bars. The hybrid-blue rear lamp clusters have been modified to incorporate larger, transparent outer lenses and a new 18-inch alloy wheel design has been introduced for the SE-L model. The SE version rides on 17-inch alloys, with five-double-spoke 18-inch wheels available in a combined package with parking sensors.

In the cabin there is a new hybrid-blue backlit stop/start button and the choice of a new Venaro Grey semi-aniline leather upholstery option, with contrasting black stitching and grey bird’s eye maple wood grain trim.

The range of 11 exterior colours includes three new shades: Vanilla Mist, Richmond Green and Atlantic Blue.

Playing a key role in helping to finalise the development of the LFA before it enters production in December, the gruelling 24h race offers Lexus and Gazoo Racing the unique opportunity to not only foster the peerless quality, durability and reliability by pushing cutting-edge technology to the extremes of mechanical endurance but also to hone the technical skills of the personnel involved in the development of future Lexus and Toyota production vehicles.

Furthermore, by participating in the 24 Hours Endurance Race Lexus and Toyota aim to showcase their dedication through Gazoo Racing to produce more emotional cars and becoming more attractive and desirable to a wider range of customers.

This year’s race marks the third consecutive entry of the Lexus LFA and, significantly, the first participation of the car in standard production guise.

Competing in the SP8 (‘Near production’) class, the race version of the LFA does not differ substantially from the road car, particularly with regard to construction, engine and transmission. Mandatory safety equipment has been installed and other modifications such as a refined aero package including a fixed rear wing and a larger fuel tank are made to reflect the format of the 24h race and the Nürburgring circuit.

Led by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC)’s master test driver Hiromu Naruse, the Gazoo Racing team will make its fourth appearance at the Nürburging 24h race. It is a team comprised of engineers and technicians from TMC, and, whilst they’ve regularly come together over recent months to support the LFA in the build-up to the 24h race, their ‘day-jobs’ are within the TMC engineering community. This kind of virtual organisation ensures that the collective learning is transmitted directly back into the core of the engineering activity.

The driver line-up includes four Japanese and three German pilots with outstanding endurance and GT racing credentials, including three champions from the Japanese Super GT series.

As part of the preparation of the cars and the drivers, Gazoo Racing entered the first three VLN races of 2010. Consistently finishing in leading positions in its SP8 class, the LFA has also demonstrated its competitiveness against track-prepared specialist racing cars, with a best finish of 17th overall in VLN2.

The new Lexus CT 200h is ready to set new standards in the premium C-segment by offering the highest levels of preventive, active and passive safety.

The full hybrid hatchback will be the first model in its class to feature Lexus’s Pre-Crash Safety system (PCS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), furthering the technical innovation for which the brand is renowned.

Lexus announced the details this week, as the CT 200h makes its USA debut at the New York Auto Show. The car will be launched in the UK and Europe in late 2010.

Pre-Crash Safety system

The CT 200h’s Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system sets a new benchmark for preventive safety in the compact premium segment. Already established as a key safety feature of other Lexus models, it uses a millimetre wave radar sensor to scan the road ahead for potential impact hazards. If the system determines a risk of impact, it assists the driver to reduce the chances of a collision.

If there is a high possibility of an accident, PCS will alert the drier and automatically provide emergency braking assistance when the brakes are operated, activating the seatbelt pretensioners at the same time.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) works in tandem with the PCS system, using the same millimetre wave radar to maintain a selected distance from the vehicle ahead. Once the road ahead is clear, ACC automatically accelerates the CT 200h to its original cruising speed.

Electronically Controlled Braking-Regeneration system

The Electronically Controlled Braking-Regeneration System (ECB-R) on the CT 200h co-ordinates control of both hydraulic and regenerative braking to maximise energy regeneration by the Lexus Hybrid Drive’s electric motor during deceleration and under braking. It has been tuned to improve pedal feel and performance.

Active and passive safety features

The ECB-R incorporates a full range of active safety systems, including the latest generation ABS with Brake Assist, Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

Passive safety provisions include eight airbags, including first-in-segment driver and front passenger knee airbags.

Fitted as standard, it gives the IS F significantly better traction and stability in high-speed cornering: Lexus test engineers were able to improve the car’s lap time around the Fuji International Speedway by a full two seconds.

The Torsen unit is robust enough to handle the 505Nm delivered by the IS F’s 5.0-litre V8 engine, automatically directing drive torque to the rear wheel with the most grip. Out-and-out performance is unchanged, with the IS F capable of nought to 62mph acceleration in 4.8 seconds and a top speed (electronically limited) of 168mph.

HDDsatellite navigation

In keeping with Lexus’s reputation for effective use of advanced technologies, the IS F is fitted with a new satellite navigation system, powered by a 40GB hard disc drive (HDD). It is one of the fastest-responding and most accurate guidance systems on the market, giving full-map coverage across Europe, with automatic links to local traffic information data to ensure efficient route planning.

The HDD also provides an on-board ”sound library” function, with 10GB of disc space available for owners to store tracks from CD – space enough for around 2,000 songs.

DABaudio

The tuner in the IS F’s 14-speaker Mark Levinson 5.1 surround sound system has been upgraded to receive DAB digital broadcasts and a USB port has been added (in addition to the Aux-in jack), to allow for fully integrated connection of portable digital music players.

New leather interior and alloy wheel options

IS F can be ordered with a new white leather interior in place of the standard black finish and with new mesh-design 19-inch alloy wheels instead of the standard 10-spoke design. Both are no-cost options.

Prices

The 2010 Lexus IS F is on sale now, priced £55,595 on-the-road.

Lexus’s full hybrid LS 600h limousine gains more advanced technology and more passenger comfort for 2010, reinforcing its position as one of the most sophisticated and luxurious cars on the market.

The revised range now centres on the five-seat LS 600h L long-wheelbase model, equipped with a Rear Seat Relaxation Package.

Rear Seat Relaxation Package

Lexus has made the LS 600h L’s Rear Seat Relaxation Package available as an option for five as well as four-seat models. It provides a series of features that provide a truly first class travelling environment.

The package equips the left hand rear seat (on right-hand drive models) with an electrically adjustable ottoman foot and thigh rest and an adjustable massage function that can replicate techniques from Shiatsu to acupressure. The seat is fitted with seat cushion airbag and, to give a clear view, the front passenger headrest can be electrically folded down. All rear seats have an electric recline adjustment.

The features include a more sophisticated climate control system that monitors the passengers’ body temperature for more effective control of the cabin environment. For the four seat version, a fixed centre console is provided with a built-in cool box, DVD and CD store and a retracting and adjustable wood inlaid tray.

Where four seats are specified, the rear seat entertainment system features a roof-mounted nine-inch VGA LCD monitor; with the five-seat option the screen is centre console mounted.

Headlight technology

The advanced headlight system is further improved with the adoption of automatic high beam operation. A sensor in the rear view mirror detects on-coming traffic, streetlights and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlight high beam on and off as conditions require.

The Lexus LS was the first car in the world to feature LED technology for low beam headlights. It offers exceptional illumination power across the full width of the road, without causing glare for oncoming traffic. The units use less power than conventional lamps and light up almost instantaneously. Their design, with a transparent blue ring around each of the three projector lenses, gives the LS 600h an unmistakeable headlamp signature.

The effectiveness of the headlights is further increased by the Intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which swivels the headlamp units in line with vehicle speed and steering angle to improve illumination through bends at junctions and when turning into parking places.

Brembo braking technology

The performance of the LS 600h’s electronically controlled braking has been improved by 12.5 per cent. The 380 mm ventilated front discs brakes are equipped with six-piston callipers, discs and pads of which have been jointly developed with Brembo. Featuring high mu pads to reduce abnormal noise and vibration, the new brakes provide excellent feel and the fade-free, high speed stopping power.

HDD satellite navigation and sound library

In common with its sister Lexus models, the 2010 LS 600h adopts a 40GB hard disc drive (HDD) system to support its satellite navigation. The HDD also provides 10GB storage for an on-board sound library of digital files.

Exterior styling and colours

The 2010 LS 600h can be identified from its new front grille and front and rear bumper design. Signature LED sidelights have also been added, together with turn indicator lamps integrated in the door mirrors. The range of exterior colours has been revised, including the introduction of a new shade, Crystal Sapphire.

Interior features

The 2010 LS 600h gains new LCD dashboard instrumentation and improved “butterfly” design headrests. All versions of the car now benefit from the Rear Seat Upgrade Package, which includes four-

zone climate control, a multi-function rear centre armrest with through-hatch into the boot, rear side airbags, electric sunshades on the rear doors, electrically adjustable rear seats with memory settings, lumbar massage and integrated air conditioning and roof-mounted air conditioning diffusers.

It will be the first time the production LFA is seen in full-blooded competition, taking on one of the world’s most challenging circuits in a marathon test of speed, handling and durability. In two previous outings in the event, development versions of the LFA were raced primarily to help hone performance and handling. This time the LFA will line up as a prime challenger in standard production car guise.

It’s a formidable proposition: with its advanced, lightweight composite construction and 552bhp mid-mounted V10 engine, it will reach 62mph in just 3.7 seconds and race on to a top speed beyond 200mph.

Gazoo Racing will prepare and field the two LFA in the event, which takes place from 13 to 16 May. Led by Toyota master test driver Hiromu Naruse, the team will include four Japanese and three German drivers who between them boast outstanding GT and endurance racing experience.

Takayuki Kinoshita is a six-time winner of the Super Taikyu Endurance Series and has competed more often and finished higher (fifth overall) at the Nürburgring 24 Hours than any other Japanese driver. Akira Ida was overall winner of the Tokachi 24 Hours in 1995 and 2007, and both Juichi Wakisaka and Kazuya Oshima have recorded consistent success in Japanese Super GT 500 and GT 300 competition.

The German team members are Armin Hahne, winner of the Spa 24 Hours in 1982 and 1983; Jochen Krumbach, who finished second overall in the 2008 Nürburgring 24 Hours; and Andre Lotterer, Super GT 500 champion in 2006 and 2008.

Sharper looks and new high-tech on-board features are central to Lexus’s revision of its best-selling IS sports saloon for 2010.

Inspired by the ultra-high-performance IS F, the IS range has been extended with a new F-Sport grade that focuses on highly desirable sports styling features.

New F-Sport grade
The new F-Sport grade, available for both IS 250 and 220d models, takes its cue from the high impact styling of the IS F and is positioned in the IS line-up between the established SE-I and SE-L models.

The dedicated F-Sport exterior features include lowered suspension (IS 250 only), exclusive 18-inch wheels and an IS F-style front grille and rear bootlid spoiler. In the cabin there are aluminium sports pedals, IS F-style sports seats, steering wheel and (on the IS 250 automatic) gear lever. The seats are finished in a combination of Alcantara upholstery with leather side bolsters.

A black-on-black interior colour scheme is complimented by a black headlining and grey stitching detail on the front seats and steering wheel.

F-Sport models share a number of premium equipment features with SE-L grade, including rain-sensing wipers, HID headlights with AFS, 13-speaker audio system and memory settings for the front seats and door mirrors.

Navigation and audio systems

Lexus has developed one of the most accurate and fast-responding navigation systems on the market. Using a 40GB hard disc drive (HDD), it provides Europe-wide coverage and is able to gather live local traffic intelligence in each country to help plot the most efficient route, wherever you may be.

A further benefit of the HDD system is its “sound library” function. Up to 10GB of disc space is available for owners to store audio tracks from CD – room enough for about 2,000 songs.

The touch-screen, full-map system is available as an option on SE and SE-I models as part of package that also includes a rear park assist monitor.

For F-Sport and SE-L versions of IS, it is included in the optional Multimedia Package, together with a 14-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System and the rear park assist monitor.

All Lexus IS audio systems can be upgraded to receive DAB digital broadcasts and are equipped as standard with USB and audio jack plug connection for fully controlled use of portable music players, and Bluetooth with an audio streaming function.

The Mark Levinson audio package now features a “sound library” function, using the navigation system’s HDD to transfer and store music files from CD up to 10GB capacity.

Larger wheels for SE grade
Lexus IS 250 SE and 220d SE have been given more street appeal for 2010 with 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard, in place of the previous 16-inch rims.

Improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions
The revisions made to the IS 250 for the 2010 model year have yielded improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. With manual transmission, combined cycle economy is now 29.1mpg, compared to 28.8mpg for the 2009 model; the new figure for the automatic is 31.7mpg (from 31.0mpg). CO2 emissions have fallen from 231 to 227g/km for the manual and 214 to 209g/km for the automatic.

The new Lexus CT 200h is the first full hybrid vehicle to be launched in the premium compact segment. Entering production in late 2010 and set for sale worldwide, the full hybrid model will provide a new gateway to the Lexus range and attract new, younger customers to the brand.

The CT 200h was designed and developed with the European market in mind. Lexus’s first five-door compact car, its size, packaging, full hybrid technology and low emissions fully address the requirements of discerning, environment-conscious customers in a key market sector. At the same time, it does not compromise the quality, refinement and driving pleasure that are the hallmarks of every Lexus.

Exterior and interior design

The production-ready CT 200h retains strong visual links to the LF-Ch concept Lexus unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show. Its styling marks a powerful evolution of Lexus’s L-finesse design philosophy with a distinctive, sharp-edged look that sets it apart from its premium compact rivals.

The exterior is styled for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and minimum wind noise. The strong front grille, directly referencing the LF-Ch concept sits over a full-width bumper and air dam. The headlamp units, positioned higher than the grille (a signature feature of L-finesse design), incorporate LED daytime running lights.

In profile, the steeply raked windscreen, long, flowing roofline and Lexus slingshot window graphic combine to create an elegant and distinctive silhouette. The front and rear corners have been pulled in tight and the wings are styled to improve airflow down the sides of the vehicle.

At the rear, the trailing edge of the roof overhangs a wide, wraparound rear window to create a seamless, integrated spoiler. A pronounced step in the tailgate section flows from the shoulders of the rear wheelarches and is anchored by a tail lamp design that displays the L-shaped motif that Lexus first introduced on the current LS model.

The interior combines superior ergonomics with extensive use of metallic finishes and dark, soft-touch surfaces.

Lexus has retained the asymmetrical dashboard design seen in the LF-Ch show car. Based on the Future Lexus Interior concept, the dashboard is split into an upper Display Zone, with an eight-inch LCD multi-display screen; and a lower Operation Zone, with the shift lever and other controls such as Lexus’s Remote Touch multi-function controller.

In keeping with the car’s performance, the driving position is set low, with a highly supportive driver’s seat. The instrument binnacle houses large, twin dials; in SPORT mode, the hybrid indicator in the binnacle functions as a tachometer and the ambient lighting turns from blue to red. The two-mode switch ring and a spotlight in the centre cluster also light up in red, changing the whole atmosphere of the cabin.

In spite of its compact, efficient design, the CT 200h offers a roomy interior. The 2,600mm wheelbase allows for front and rear passenger accommodation that is among the most spacious in the segment. Luggage capacity is 345 litres, increasing to 700 litres with the rear seats lowered.

Lexus Hybrid Drive

The Lexus Hybrid Drive system in the CT 200h combines a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine with a powerful electric motor. Drivers have the choice of four selectable drive modes: ECO and NORMAL place the emphasis on efficiency and comfort, while SPORT focuses on dynamic performance.

Unlike mild hybrid systems used by other manufacturers, the CT 200h also has an EV (electric vehicle) mode that allows for ultra-quiet running on the electric motor alone, resulting in zero fuel consumption and CO2, NOx and particulate emissions. The car is capable of running in EV mode for up to 1.2 miles at speeds up to 28mph.

Chassis and suspension

The CT 200h is built on a new platform with a dedicated double wishbone and trailing arm rear suspension system. It has been developed specifically to combine the ride comfort expected of a Lexus with superior driving involvement and handling agility.

Several elements in the MacPherson strut design have been exclusively developed for the mode, including the coil springs and shock absorbers, and a new front anti-roll bar has been designed to deliver improved roll rigidity.

The double wishbone rear suspension is exclusive to the CT 200h and incorporates a lightweight trailing arm. The springs and shocks are positioned separately to minimise intrusion into the loadspace floor.

Even though it is one of the most exclusive supercars money can buy, the number of formal expressions of interest in purchase received by Lexus is already greater than the limited production run of just 500 examples.

This does not mean that anyone wanting to own an LFA has missed their chance, as they can still register their interest up to mid-March and the end of the Geneva motor show. It is at this point that the 500 cars will be allocated across the 56 countries where they are on sale, with confirmed orders with deposits to be invited from the end of May.

The centre for all European sales is Lexus Park Lane, where the LFA commands a prime showcase position on one of London’s most prestigious streets.

Devshi Varshani, the Personal Liaison Manager who looks after all LFA sales, said: “The level of interest we have witnessed reinforces just what an exceptional car the LFA is. Even though few people have even seen the car in the metal, let alone experienced its breathtaking performance, it has quickly achieved the status of a truly rare and highly sought-after machine.”

The LFA is designed to deliver the supreme driving experience, powered by a mid-front mounted 4.8-litre V10 engine that produces 552bhp for nought to 62mph in just 3.7 seconds. Hand built in strong but ultra-lightweight carbon fibre material, it represents the pinnacle of advanced automotive design and engineering.

The acoustic performance of the V10 engine and exhaust system has been fine-tuned to create a unmistakeable ‘soundtrack’ that rises from a rumbling note at idle to a nape-tingling red-line wail.

The acoustic team studied the noise made by a Formula 1 car at maximum revs, then applied detailed design features to create an exhaust note for the LFA that is unlike any other car on the road, enhancing the sensation of speed and acceleration.

Lexus LFA Sound video here

The main silencer is made of titanium and has a valve-actuated, dual-stage structure that channels the exhaust flow according to engine speed. Up to 3,000rpm, the exhaust valve stays closed, routing the flow through multiple chambers, creating an unobtrusive note. Above 3,000rpm the valve opens, allowing the exhaust to bypass these chambers and flow into a single resonance chamber, before exiting through the stacked trio of tailpipes.

The V10’s induction system was also modified to complement the engine’s acoustic qualities. The uniquely formed horizontally split resin surge tank – a unique design – mimics the acoustic chamber of wind and string instruments: up to 4,000rpm it emits the engine’s primary firing frequency of 300Hz; this changes to 400 to 500Hz as the engine revs climb to 6,000rpm; and a peak is reached at 600Hz as the engine wails towards its 9,000rpm red line.

The air intake is made from a porous duct material to generate bass to mid-range tones. The LFA development team called this acoustic effect Resonated Complex Harmony.

The engine’s induction and exhaust soundtrack are channelled into the LFA’s cabin, so people on board can enjoy the experience as much as those on the outside. The main sound channel that pipes in the engine’s induction notes runs from the surge tank into the cabin below the main dashboard panel.

Two further sound channels run to an opening in the upper cowl on top of the dashboard structure and a reflector panel low down at the front of the cabin. Together with the primary sound channel, these put the driver at the centre of the LFA team calls the 3D Surround Sound Concept.”
