Mazda is introducing a special ‘Pay no VAT’ offer on most models in the Mazda line-up, from the Mazda2 to the Mazda6, meaning the Japanese manufacturer’s sporty, dynamic range now starts from just £8,672 (on-the-road)*. The ‘Pay no VAT’ campaign is made even more appealing by the offer of 0% APR finance over four years with only a 30% deposit** required.

The ‘Pay no VAT’ campaign was launched for diesel Mazda6 models in November, and has now been extended to include the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda5 and Mazda MX-5 models registered from now until 29 February 2012. All Mazda6 petrol and diesel models will also be available with no VAT, 0% APR until 31 March 2012.

“The ‘Pay no VAT’ campaign makes a really compelling offer to consumers, saving them up to £4,000,” comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK. “There has never been a better time to buy a brand new Mazda and extending the offer across much of the range means everyone can benefit from the ‘Pay no VAT’ campaign, whether motorists are purchasing the super-practical Mazda5 or the sporty two-seater Mazda MX-5 roadster.

“We are confident that no VAT together with our 0% APR finance offer will attract large numbers of newcomers to the Mazda brand. It will also reward existing Mazda owners, as many of them will be able to benefit from ‘zero cost to change’ when trading in their current cars for a brand new Mazda. Customers should visit their local dealership to check which models will be available under this programme and book a test drive,” adds Allibon.

This latest ‘Pay no VAT’ offer is available only on selected Mazda models while stocks last and must end on 29 February 2012 (31 March 2012 for selected Mazda6 models). As well as offering 0% APR finance on Conditional Sale (with a 30% deposit**) over 48 months, Mazda is also offering low-cost, 6.9% APR Representative finance on Personal Contract Purchase (no minimum deposit) up to 36 months for all models.

“All vehicles in the Mazda model line-up deliver a dynamic and engaging drive, with strongly performing engines, competitive CO2 emissions and an ownership experience which is underpinned by reduced costs and Mazda’s outstanding build quality and reliability,” concludes Allibon.

Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that it will showcase the global premiere of the Mazda TAKERI concept car, a next-generation mid-sized saloon, at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday, 30 November.

Also on stage and making its Japanese debut will be the new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV – equipped with the full array of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology[1]. Other new technologies and a full line-up of production models will also be on show.

Mazda’s theme for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show is “Environmental Technology, Pushing the Boundaries of the Emotion of Motion. As long as there are people who love to drive, Mazda will continue to evolve the emotion of motion in harmony with environmental and safety performance.”

The TAKERI concept car exploits Mazda’s new design language, KODO – Soul of Motion, to bring a new level of strength and allure to mid-size saloon styling. Under its appealing exterior is benchmark SKYACTIV Technology, including Mazda’s first regenerative braking system. This technology converts kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration, stores it in capacitors and then uses it to power the vehicle’s electrical equipment – reducing load on the engine and saving fuel. Combined with the new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, Mazda i-stop, new lightweight structure, aerodynamic and chassis technologies, regenerative braking – enables the Mazda TAKERI to achieve excellent fuel economy together with vigorous performance and a comfortable high-quality ride.

Mazda Motor Corporation celebrated the world premiere of its all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show today (Tuesday 13 September). The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology and the new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’.

Mazda CX-5 will go on sale in the UK next year, featuring all-new gasoline and diesel engines, all-new manual and automatic transmissions, plus an all-new bodyshell, new suspension and a choice of two- or four-wheel drive – evolving Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive attributes to a new and higher level.

The 4.5-metre long CX-5’s exterior design features bold styling – inspired by the rapid acceleration and turning achieved by animals like the cheetah – that simultaneously expresses SUV-like solidity and functionality with Mazda’s characteristic sense of vitality and agility.

Mazda CX-5 will be one of the lightest and most aerodynamic vehicles in its class (Cd 0.33), which contributes to its outstanding fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. Mazda’s engineers have focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV. Each engine has a record-breaking compression ratio of 14:1 for ideal efficiency and each will feature Mazda’s fuel saving ‘i-stop’ system, now with a faster reacting control system.

The engine line-up for CX-5 will include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 direct-injection petrol engine (165ps/210Nm) and its SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine with a two-stage turbocharger available with two outputs 150ps/380Nm and 175ps/420Nm.

Targeted fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the CX-5 models with front-wheel drive and manual transmission are 47.1mpg / 139g/km (petrol) and 62.8mpg / 119g/km for the 150ps diesel. The diesel engines meet Euro 6 emissions standards without the need for an expensive NOx after-treatment system.

Measuring 4,540mm long, 1,840mm wide and 1,670mm high with a 2,700mm wheelbase, CX-5 will have generous front legroom, class-leading 997mm rear legroom and a cavernous boot (500 litres with the rear seats upright). Easy-to-use Karakuri functionality features the world’s first 40/20/40 split independent rear seats. The spacious driver-oriented cabin, together with higher quality trim, improved ergonomics, enhanced equipment and lower noise levels, ensures an enjoyable and rewarding driving experience.

The Mazda CX-5, which will be seen in production form for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show, will be the first Mazda built using Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology, but what does SKYACTIV really offer the consumer?

Mazda’s radical new SKYACTIV technology encompasses the whole car, through the intelligent application of advanced engine, transmission, body and chassis technology and lightweight engineering. Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV technologies deliver uncompromised driving pleasure and class-leading environmental and safety performance and will be an integral part of every new Mazda model that comes to market from 2012 and not just selected “eco” models.

Every Mazda driver will therefore fully benefit from this egalitarian approach to improved fuel economy and emissions which means lower road fund tax, less company car tax and smaller fuel bills. This flies in the face of the current trend of forcing environmentally-conscious drivers to pay a premium for economy-oriented and hybrid models.

SKYACTIV centres on three key areas – advanced engines with world-beating compression ratios, highly efficient transmissions, and sophisticated lightweight chassis technology for outstanding crash safety performance and enhanced driving enjoyment.

Up to 80 per cent of the energy contained in fuel is lost within a vehicle’s powertrain, so Mazda’s engineers adopted a radical back-to-basics approach to boosting the outright efficiency of their next-generation engines.

The new petrol-powered SKYACTIV-G engine features a class-leading compression ratio of 14:1 – higher than that of a Formula 1 engine. The result is 15 per cent increase in fuel efficiency, 15 per cent drop in CO2 - leading to lower road fund licence and benefit-in-kind bills – and an equally impressive 15 per cent hike in torque across the entire rev-range.

The SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, features an exceptionally low 14:1 compression ratio, coupled with two turbo chargers it posts some equally impressive figures, a full 20 per cent more economical than the powerplant it replaces, leading to reduced fuel costs and lower road fund licence and benefit-in-kind costs. It revs smoothly and cleanly to a high 5,200rpm and easily meets EU Stage 6 emission levels.

Rather than develop a range of transmissions to meet the different requirements of its global markets, Mazda’s drivetrain engineers took the bold decision to develop just two all-new six-speed transmissions to effectively deliver market demands.

The SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed lock-up automatic transmission brings together the best attributes of conventional step automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and dual clutch transmissions in one compact and lightweight package. The result is a smooth and highly efficient gearbox that delivers up to 7 per cent better economy along with a direct feel and quick shift pattern – qualities aimed at the enthusiastic driver.

The SKYACTIV-MT is a lightweight six-speed manual transmission that has been designed to deliver crisp wrist-flick gear changes. Using a common second and third input gear and removing the reverse idle shaft has reduced the number of moving parts and trimmed its overall weight by 3kg.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV engineers also wanted to create a body that was stiffer and stronger, for enhanced dynamic performance and superior impact protection.

The new SKYACTIV-Body is the result of revisiting basic chassis principles and employs a forward-thinking straight and continuous basic framework in which each chassis section functions in a co-ordinated manner with other sections, creating a structure that disperses impact forces widely throughout the entire framework.

This, along with a 20 per cent increase in the amount of high-tensile steel, a higher proportion of weld-bonded sections and a markedly higher number of spot weld points has resulted in a body that is a full 30 per cent stiffer compared with current models in the Mazda range resulting in greater steering and suspension precision, meets the top tier criteria for crash safety assessments in all markets and an 8 per cent reduction in body in white weight, leading to significant reductions in fuel and emission based tax costs.

The SKYACTIV-Chassis is an impressive 14 percent lighter than before, and features suspension and steering systems that have been redeveloped from scratch to reinforce Mazda’s trademark driving dynamism while still achieving a lower overall weight, benefiting driving dynamics, economy and emissions.

The strut front and multi-link ear layout features lightweight construction as well optimised linkages and bushes for enhanced agility and greater ride comfort. A new electric power-steering set-up with a higher steering ratio, along with a new lightweight and highly rigid cross member results in exceptional steering precision and feedback.

Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the world premiere of its all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, 13 September. The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that will adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and the new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’.

The Mazda CX-5, which evolves Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive character, will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012. Developed around the full range of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY – including all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, body and chassis – the CX-5 delivers precise handling responses and a high-quality ride, matched with outstanding environmental credentials and an advanced safety performance.

The engine line-up for the European specification CX-5 will include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine, which will be available in Standard Power and High Power versions. Each engine has a record-breaking compression ratio of 14:1 for ideal efficiency. Mazda’s engineers focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV and targeted CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 engined model*.

The CX-5 is also the first production model to showcase Mazda’s new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, which was previewed with the Mazda SHINARI and Mazda MINAGI concept cars. Unique themes of the KODO design theme include a prominent new frontal treatment with a bolder Mazda family face and more dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility.

Joining the CX-5 on Mazda’s stand at the Frankfurt Show will be the upgraded Mazda3. This hugely popular Mazda now delivers lower CO2 emissions, more sporty and stable driving dynamics, with an updated interior and exterior design, and higher quality levels.

Inspired by the highly successful 275bhp Mazda MX-5 GT race car competing in the 2011 Britcar Production GTN Championship, Mazda has introduced two new ‘Black Limited Edition’ models – a Mazda MX-5 Sport Black and a Mazda2 Black – bringing a darker edge to Mazda’s model range.

The success of the 850kg MX-5 GT race car is that is retains the same characteristics that make the road-going Mazda MX-5 a great handling, nimble and fun-to-drive roadster. In its first year of racing the MX-5 GT has achieved two podiums and is currently third in class. The MX-5 GT race car continues to challenge convention, taking on the more powerful established race cars from Lotus, BMW and Ferrari.

The success of this year’s MX-5 race programme and the popularity of MX-5 GT has lead to the track-inspired ‘Black Limited Edition’ Mazda MX-5 and Mazda2. Available from mid-July, the Mazda MX-5 Sport Black is distinguished by unique paint finishes and an enhanced specification, offering more for a lower price than the car it’s based on. Externally the car is highlighted by a Brilliant Black powered retractable hard-top, this is in contrast with the choice of bodywork colours – Spirited Green metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent and Velocity Red mica – but compliments the dark ‘gun metal’ 17-inch alloy wheels.

The model also comes with black leather interior with contrasting ‘sand’ colour stitching, Piano Black steering wheel and deco panel, and unique ‘Black Limited Edition’ exterior badging, uniquely numbered interior plaque and Limited Edition floor mats.

The MX-5 Sport Black incorporates the generous equipment specification of the Sport Tech model, including climate control air-conditioning, a premium Bose® audio system, an integrated hands-free Bluetooth®system, cruise control and front fog lights. Owners will also benefit from the world’s fastest folding powered retractable roof, which goes up or down in 12 seconds.

Only 500 examples of the Mazda MX-5 Sport Black will be produced, each costing £22,995 (OTR), just £360 more than the 160ps, 2.0-litre, six-speed transmission Sport Tech model on which it is based.

“Special Edition models of the Mazda MX-5 have always been eagerly received by UK consumers, and the new Sport Black model takes inspiration from the MX-5 GT race car that embodies Mazda’s Defy Convention brand strategy,” comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda Motors UK. “Both the race car and road-going sportscar remain true to their roots, those of driving entertainment, great handling and fun to drive. The Sport Black model delivers a distinctive and sharper edge to our long-running star performer and as in the Britcar Production GTN Championship, it remains unrivalled as a rewarding sportscar.”

Five-door Mazda2 with attitude
Following the MX-5 Sport Black theme, the new Limited Edition Mazda2 Black five-door is also available in Spirited Green metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent and True Red. Based on the 84ps, 1.3-litre Tamura model, the Mazda2 Black adds a black vinyl roof, matt black 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, privacy glass and a rear bumper sports trim.

Inside, there is the Sports interior with climate control air-conditioning, a Parrot Bluetooth® hands-free system, electric rear windows, plus unique ‘Black Edition’ exterior badging, uniquely numbered interior plaque and Limited Edition floor mats.

Mazda customers’ compact family car of choice, the Mazda3, has reached three million cumulative production units on 26 April 2011, declared Mazda Motor Corporation. This milestone was achieved in just seven years and 10 months since production of the first-generation model commenced, making the Mazda3 the fastest-selling model in Mazda’s current line-up of passenger vehicles.

In the UK, the Mazda3 has enjoyed popularity with many families since its launch in 2004 and accounts for almost a quarter of UK sales at 9,659 units, financial year 2010. During its life cycle, the Mazda3 was awarded the ‘Best Family Car’ title at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards 2009 by The Association of Scottish Motoring Writers and achieved first place in the European compact car segment in the 2010 customer satisfaction study conducted by J.D. Power.

The second generation Mazda3 has proven to be an attractive offer in the compact car segment in the UK, attributable to its design, handling and performance.

The Mazda3 is a true global model. It is produced at three locations – Mazda’s Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi, Japan (where all European models are produced), the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) plant in Nanjing, China; and AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT) – and sold in approximately 90 countries and regions*. The three-millionth Mazda3 was produced at the Hofu Plant. It is a Japanese-specification five-door hatchback with Mazda’s MZR-2.0-litre engine, i-stop and a Crystal White Pearl Mica exterior.

Mazda Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of R&D, Hirotaka Kanazawa, said: “The Mazda3 embodies the three elements of Mazda’s DNA: Distinctive Design, Exceptional Functionality, and Responsive Handling and Driving Performance. Continued global success has seen it grow into Mazda’s mainstay model, comprising a third of all Mazda vehicle sales.

Since the first-generation model appeared on the market, it has responded to the major changes in the automobile industry by inheriting and strengthening Mazda’s brand DNA while evolving exceptional environmental and safety performance.

As the Mazda3 passes the three million-unit mark, I would like to thank every customer for their support, and reaffirm our commitment to delivering outstanding environmental and safety performance balanced with driving pleasure that goes beyond your expectations.”

To celebrate global production of the Mazda MX-5 passing 900,000 units, UK sales of the world’s most popular roadster reaching more than 100,000 cars and the approach of spring – Mazda is introducing a new special edition of its iconic sportscar.

The ‘Kendo Special Edition’, is named after “The way of the Sword” – a modern Japanese martial art renowned for its fighting spirit, eye-catching dynamic movement and refinement. Two versions of the newcomer will be available from 1 March 2011. The Mazda MX-5 1.8i Kendo soft-top costs £19,255 (OTR) and the more powerful Mazda MX-5 2.0i Kendo roadster coupe has a £22,320 (OTR) price tag.

“Special Edition models of Mazda MX-5 have always been eagerly received by UK consumers and I’m sure the two new Kendo models will trigger a strong wave of fresh interest in our long-running star performer,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales Director, Mazda UK. “In Britain, the Mazda MX-5 has enjoyed 20 years of incredible popularity, with UK customers accounting for over 10 percent of global sales, while it has received a host of ‘best sportscar’ awards from motoring and consumer media. The enhanced practicality of the third-generation models, has enabled the MX-5 to become much more than a ‘sunny weekend’ car and our Roadster Coupe now accounts for the majority of sales as buyers look to use their Mazda sportscar all-year round.”

The Kendo models are designed to appeal to both the traditional soft-top roadster customer and those is in search of a more premium product with the Roadster Coupe. Based on the ‘SE’ derivatives, both Kendo models feature a unique Stone Leather interior (with Stone coloured stitching on the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake), unique 17-inch alloy wheels, exterior badging and floor mats, plus front fog lamps, heated seats, brushed aluminium style-bar trim and aluminium pedals.

The Kendo Roadster Coupe boasts three additional items of equipment – a premium BOSE® audio system, Bluetooth® hands-free and cruise control. Both versions offer a choice of Sparkling Black or Dolphin Grey mica paint finish – free of charge.

Mechanically the Kendo twins are identical with their regular siblings, delivering the same unique driving pleasure. The Kendo soft-top is powered by a 126ps 1.8-litre engine, the Roadster Coupe by a 160ps 2.0-litre unit.

“Today, the Mazda MX-5 remains unrivalled as a rewarding sportscar that can also be used for everyday motoring throughout the year. The MX-5 soft-top continues to offer the purest, fun-to-drive thrills, while the Roadster Coupe adds to those thrills with an even more premium experience, and the same exhilarating drive,” adds Cameron.

The world’s most popular roadster, the Mazda MX-5, sets a new record this week when total production of Mazda Motor Corporation’s iconic sportscar passes 900,000 units on 4 February, 2011. This significant milestone has been achieved 21 years and 10 months after mass production of the first-generation MX-5 commenced in April 1989.

In Britain, the Mazda MX-5 has enjoyed 20 years of incredible popularity, owing to UK consumers accounting for over 10 percent of global sales and 40 percent of European sales, while receiving a host of ‘best sportscar’ awards from motoring and consumer media.

“For British motorists, the Mazda MX-5 is the ultimate expression of our Zoom-Zoom philosophy of creating cars that are fun to drive,” comments Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK. “Over 20 years, the MX-5 has maintained its position as an affordable, lightweight sportscar that is responsive and rewarding to drive, while also proving itself to be ‘recession proof’. We sold 10 percent more MX-5s last year than we did in 2009 and owners enjoy remarkably high residual values. The introduction of the third-generation models meant that the MX-5 became much more than a ‘sunny weekend’ car and the Roadster Coupe, featuring the electric folding roof, now accounts for the majority of sales as buyers look to use their Mazda sportscar all-year round.”

Today, the Mazda MX-5 continues to be the most popular Roadster in the UK. The regular 10-strong range for 2011 is priced from £17,975 to £23,205 (on-the-road). Currently, the range is boosted by two ‘special edition’ versions of the legendary sportscar called the MX-5 Miyako. The 1.8i Miyako soft-top costs £18,769.68 (OTR) and the more powerful 2.0i Miyako roadster coupe has a £21,321.81 (OTR) price tag.

Back in 2000, the Mazda MX-5 was initially certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s “Best selling two-seater sportscar” when production reached 531,890 units in May. Since then, Guinness updated the record when production passed 700,000 and 800,000 units, respectively. Currently Mazda is reapplying to Guinness World Records to have the record updated to acknowledge production of the 900,000th vehicle.

During the 1960s and 1970s, numerous lightweight and fun-to-drive sportscars offered nimble handling and free-spirited open-air motoring. In the 1980s, Mazda decided to resurrect this spirit with a new roadster for the modern age. Using the latest engineering techniques, Mazda developed the MX-5 and introduced it in February 1989 as a reminder that driving could still be fun despite ever-stricter safety and quality standards. To this day, the Mazda MX-5 remains the longest-running model in Mazda’s global line-up.

Nobuhiro Yamamoto, programme manager for the current MX-5, said, “Since Mazda launched the original MX-5, it has undergone two complete product redesigns and a series of upgrades. Its enduring success is due to the strong support it enjoys from MX-5 fans around the world. Going forwards, I will strive to keep the MX-5’s spirit alive while evolving it into a car that will be loved by even more people.”

Mazda’s senior managing executive officer in charge of development, Seita Kanai, said, “More than 20 years have passed since the first-generation Mazda MX-5 was born. During this time, society and vehicles themselves have changed significantly. Responding to environmental issues has become increasingly important for all automakers. As part of its environmental efforts, Mazda is pushing forwards with the development of future products that will incorporate SKYACTIV technologies. Many of the elements that go into our SKYACTIV technologies are based on long years of development work that have gone into the MX-5. Indeed, the guiding principle behind SKYACTIV – to build cars that are fun to drive – is perfectly embodied by our MX-5.”

“As we head toward the next production milestone of one million units,” Kanai continued, “Mazda is committed to further evolving the MX-5. We will refine its fun-to-drive character and further enhance its environmental and safety capabilities. As Mazda passes its 91st anniversary, we are turning our sights towards our 100th birthday. In the years ahead, together with our sportscars loyal fan base, we will continue to cherish the MX-5 as a symbol of the Mazda brand.”

Mazda is winning significant company car business with contract hire and leasing companies with the multi award-winning Mazda6 continuing to lead the way.

The Japanese marque has seen sales to Britain’s leading contract hire and leasing companies jump 20.9 percent in 2010 – a percentage gain significantly above that of a host of other brands including Audi, Citroen, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

Mazda’s market share with more than 20 of the UK’s largest contract hire and leasing companies increased by 14 percent in the first 10 months of 2010 to 2.5 percent, according to the latest analysis by Derwent Management Services.

Company car sales to contract hire and leasing companies total 3,633 vehicles to the end of October 2010 – up from 3,005 during the same period last year. It means that Mazda is ranked 12th of 36 brands among the most popular motor manufacturers supplying Britain’s top leasing providers.

The Mazda6 is the marque’s most popular with company car drivers taking delivery of their vehicles from contract hire and leasing companies.

According to the analysis in the first 10 months of 2010, Mazda supplied 2,360 models to leasing companies – up from 2,067 last year. It means that amongst its chief competitors, the Mazda6 is more popular than the likes of the Toyota Avensis, Renault Laguna, Honda Accord and Peugeot 407 although behind the Vauxhall Insignia, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo.

The UK contract hire and leasing sector is a core supply channel for Mazda as it continues to look to increase company car business with end-user fleets and user-chooser drivers.

Mazda Fleet and Remarketing Director Peter Allibon said: “The analysis shows that Mazda is closing the gap on some of the UK’s most popular company car providers as some brands have seen their market share slip in 2010.

“Not only that, but among key rivals the Mazda6 is gaining momentum as demand for the Insignia, Passat and Mondeo has fallen in 2010, according to the leasing company data.

“While the Mazda6 hatchback and estate continues to lead the way for the brand in the fleet sector, demand for the Mazda3 and Mazda2 continues to increase.”

Mazda is strengthening this successful line-up even further with the launch of an updated Euro 5 compliant 1.6-litre MZ-CD common-rail diesel engine, now with a six-speed manual transmission. It produces 85kW/115ps at 3,600rpm and 270Nm of torque across a wider engine speed range of 1,750-to-2,700rpm. This new version uses just 4.4 litres of fuel per 100km (64.2mpg) on the combined cycle and produces 117g/km of CO2. Its new, simpler low-friction two-valve SOHC (single overhead camshaft) layout and its aluminium block make this engine lightweight and compact.

The second-generation Mazda3 boasts an expressive exterior design that is sporty and dynamic with deeply character lines for a look of solid build quality. It is aerodynamically highly efficient, with one of the segment’s lowest drag coefficients (0.30 Cd for the hatchback). Sporty and roomy on the inside, it has a refined human-machine interface cockpit for exemplary ease-of-use and offers superior refinement and cabin quietness. With the updated 1.6-litre turbo diesel under the bonnet, the lightweight second-generation Mazda3 is quick off the line, frugal at the pumps and fun to drive.

Powertrains

The 2010 Mazda3 line-up has a broad range of seven powertrains available to meet the diverse preferences of European customers. Besides the updated MZ-CD 1.6, the diesel line-up also offers the powerful yet frugal MZR-CD 2.2 in two fun-to-drive derivatives. The Standard Power version produces 110kW/150ps at 3,500rpm and 360Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,600rpm. The High Power version delivers 136kW/185ps at 3,500rpm and 400Nm between 1,800 and 3,000rpm. Both derivatives are paired to a six-speed manual transmission.

The petrol line-up’s entry-level engine is the lively MZR 1.6 with intake manifold fuel injection and a five-speed manual transmission producing 77kW/105ps at 6,000rpm and 145Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The frugal and fun MZR 2.0 DISI direct-injection petrol comes with Mazda’s unique stop/ start ‘i-stop’ system as standard. This engine delivers 111kW/151ps at 6,200rpm and 191Nm at 4,500rpm and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. An MZR 2.0 petrol is also available with a five-speed automatic transmission. It puts out 110kW/150ps at 6,500rpm and 187Nm at 4,000rpm.

Rounding out the engine line-up is the the high-performance MZR 2.3 DISI turbo direct-injection petrol of the Mazda3 MPS superhatch producing 191kW/260ps at 5,550rpm and 380Nm of torque at 3,000rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard.

Equipment

In all European markets and the UK, even the entry level Mazda3, the 1.6 S, has a long list of standard equipment. Power adjustable door mirrors are standard, as are a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, air-conditioning, power front windows, remote central locking, driver’s seat with height and lumbar adjustment, and a radio/CD player with four speakers, plus MP3 capability and an AUX jack for hooking up MP3 devices.

Depending on grade, the Mazda3 adds features like a Bluetooth® interface, a Bose® premium surround sound system, automatic dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, keyless entry and start system, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rear parking sensor system, heated windscreen, and a rain and light sensor system. An integrated navigation system which uses a 4.1-inch display and can be operated from the steering wheel, is available. Navigation data is stored on a compact SD card.

Interior

Up to five passengers can enjoy the Mazda3’s above-average roominess (for a compact car) and a long list of comfort features. The interior delivers what people have come to expect from Mazda – a sporty ambience with ‘form-follows-function’ ergonomics. Also typical for the Mazda brand is the interior’s high quality feel with carefully crafted materials.

The driver area is designed like a pilot’s cockpit focused on the driver with intuitive human-machine interface (HMI) functionality. All controls are grouped according to their function. Depending on their importance for driving and comfort, details are communicated via two easy-to-read LCD displays in the instrument cluster and the centre stack.

Passive Safety

The Mazda3 is among the safest vehicles in the C-segment and was awarded a 5-Star rating in the Euro NCAP crash testing during November 2009. It features a triple-H body architecture, sophisticated front and rear deformation zones, and the use of impact-resistant high-tensile steels in the pillars and side sills. Every model features front seats with ‘active’ head restraints (that lower the chance of a whiplash injury during a rear collision), front, side and curtain airbags to protect the driver and all passengers, plus front seatbelts with double pretensioners (driver´s seat only) and load-limiters. Energy-absorbing foam in the front bumper beam enhances pedestrian protection.

Active Safety

Every Mazda3 features dynamic stability control (DSC) with a traction control system (TCS), as well as ABS and brake assist. The standard emergency stop signal (ESS) warns following vehicles with rapidly flashing hazard lights whenever the driver suddenly brakes in an emergency situation. Once the car stops, the system continues to flash in normal frequency, which can help prevent the following vehicle from hitting the back of the car.

The range-topping Mazda 3 MPS comes with a pivoting adaptive front lighting system (AFS) with bi-xenon headlamps that pivot left or right (to a maximum of 15º) and illuminate the corner or curve automatically. At the back, the rear vehicle monitoring system (RVM), detects a vehicle approaching from the right or left rear or driving in the ‘blind spot’, and then warns the driver before he might cause a dangerous situation by changing lanes.

The significantly upgraded Mazda2 model range is now on sale in the UK priced from £9,995 (on-the-road). The nine-strong line-up of three-door and five-door hatchbacks offers customers a choice of three petrol and one diesel powertrains and four generous equipment levels. Responding to public demand, two new models are added to the range – an automatic model (with a 1.5-litre engine and four-speed transmission) and the ‘Tamura‘ offering sporty looks at a high-value price.

New features appearing across the entire upgraded Mazda2 range deliver significant improvements to interior comfort, ride quality, handling and refinement. Outside, the Upgraded Mazda2 carries forward the “exquisite and dynamic” design concept while blending the brand’s ‘family face’ with a larger five-point grille and larger Mazda badge to harmonise the Mazda2 with the whole product line-up. Plus the Mazda2 features newly designed front fog lamp bezels and wheels which create a stronger sense of quality and sportiness.

Inside, finishes and decorative parts are revised for a higher quality feel throughout the cabin, included is a newly designed instrument panel, new seat patterns and seat fabric colours, meter panel with blackout finish dials and chrome rings, while the centre stack is finished in piano black. Road holding and ride comfort have been improved thanks to a stiffer bodyshell, changes to the front suspension geometry, softer mountings for the rear trailing arms and re-tuned rear dampers.

“While the Mazda2 retains the original Zoom-Zoom driver appeal, our engineers have responded to media and owner feedback about our most popular model which accounts for 25 percent of Mazda sales in Britain. They have developed a revised rear suspension which provides superior ride comfort while also making the rear of the car feel more planted on the tarmac, even on the bumpiest of UK roads,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales Director, Mazda UK.

“Making the ‘special’ Tamura model a permanent addition to the line-up gives consumers a high-value variant with a sporty flavour beneath the regular, fully specified Sport models,” adds Cameron.

“The new automatic ‘Mazda2 Activematic’ is certain to expand the appeal of our smallest car. Changing traffic conditions and advances in automatic gearbox technology are steadily increasing the attraction of this kind of transmission and we expect our latest model to account for around eight percent of Mazda2 sales in 2011,” concludes Cameron.

For the upgraded Mazda2’s powertrain line-up, the three petrol engines have been re-tuned to Euro Stage 5 whilst the five-speed manual transmission’s gearing has been revised – by between 7.7 and 5.7 percent across the 2nd-to-5th ratios – to save fuel. These changes achieve significantly improved fuel economy (by up to 2 percent) and reduced CO2 emissions (by up to 4.8 percent).

For both the low and high power 1.3 engines, the CO2 output has been cut from 125 to 119g/km – meaning that five petrol Mazda2 cars now have a rating under 120g/km and move to the lower tax ‘C’ band, while the diesel model moves down to band ‘B’, so six models qualify for £0 Road Tax first-year rate and reduced Benefit in Kind costs, offering users significant savings.

In their latest forms, the 1.3-litre engine is available in two power outputs (75ps and 84ps) and the 1.5-litre generates 102ps, while the 1.6-litre turbo-diesel now produces 95ps – a 5.5 percent increase. The Mazda2 TS2 Activematic combines the powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine from the Sport version with the Mazda four-speed automatic transmission.

Top speeds range from 104-to-115mph and acceleration times from 0-to-62mph are between 10.7 and 14.9 seconds – depending on model. Fuel economy varies between 44.8 and 67.3mpg (combined cycle), while CO2 ratings spread from 110 to 146g/km.

Prices for the regular Mazda2 range start at £9,995 (on-the-road), with TS2 models beginning at £10,820, the new Tamura at £11,520 and Sport models from £12,630. A choice of nine exterior colours is available, with Brilliant Black (£260) and seven mica or metallic finishes (£410) as options.

Generous equipment right across the range

Equipment levels on the Mazda2 range have always been unusually generous for a B-segment supermini. Now with the upgraded line-up, every model comes with remote central locking, air-conditioning, electric front windows, electric door mirrors, a piano black centre stack, CD radio with Auxiliary jack and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm.

Moving up the range, TS2 models feature 15-inch alloy wheels, side and curtain airbags, leather steering wheel with audio controls, two additional audio speakers, 60/40 split rear seats, trip computer with speed alarm and (on the automatic) Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).

The new Tamura model adds 16-inch alloy wheels and a Sports Styling Kit with side skirts, rear spoiler and four-lamp headlights to the TS2 features.

Sport models also feature 16-inch alloy wheels, plus Sports seat trim, front fog lights, auto-lights and auto-wipers, cruise control, automatic climate control air-conditioning, electric rear windows (on the five-door) and DSC.

Mazda is also one of the only manufacturers to include a finance calculator in its Car Configurator, which allows customers to quickly and easily look at all of the finance options available to them.

Mazda’s Car Configurator allows customers to configure, save and compare any Mazda vehicle and up to three at a time – from the newly upgraded Mazda2, or the new Mazda5, all the way to the MX-5, the world’s biggest selling Roadster – with the option to save the configured car to their desktop as wallpaper or send to a friend.

The realistic image of a configured vehicle can be viewed as a 180° rotation, or in two outdoor locations. Interiors can be viewed as a large image which can also be updated so the customer can see their preferred series and trim. The customer can also configure the exterior by selecting the body colour, wheel design and accessories, all of which update the car on screen as they’re picked.

‘Hot spots’ available on both exterior and interior views deliver vehicle highlights and give customers an insight into some of the features on each model. For example, a closer look at the razor-sharp lines on the Mazda6 reveal its class-leading aerodynamics, while buyers examining the interior of the CX-7 can learn all about the impressive BOSE® premium surround sound audio system. While a summary page and detailed specification are also available to print.

Mark Cameron, Sales Director for Mazda UK, commented: “I’m delighted that we have been able to introduce the Car Configurator to the website, especially when it looks so impressive. The realistic visuals really set off the design of our cars, and I particularly like the animated roof opening and closing on the MX-5 Roadster Coupe. We are one of the only manufacturers that offers a finance calculator on the site, and it’s a great opportunity for potential buyers to see the kind of great deal they could be getting when buying a new Mazda.”

To customise your perfect car, visit Mazda’s new Car Configurator.

With its seven-seater versatility, intelligent packaging and engaging style, the New Mazda5 compact multi-activity vehicle has been engineered from the ground up to meet the demands of even the most active families.

The New Mazda5 arrives in the UK from October 2010, priced from £17,695 to £21,495 OTR, and will be available in Mazda’s familiar and generously appointed TS, TS2 and Sport trim levels. Standard equipment levels are, as you’d expect, exceptionally generous and include six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control System (TCS), two ISOFIX child seat anchor points, air-conditioning, cruise control, a six-speaker CD audio unit and alloy wheels across the range.

The New Mazda5 also sees the debut of Mazda’s distinctive Nagare design language. Inspired by the flowing elements found in nature, the Mazda5 is instantly distinguished by its boldly sculpted flanks. These distinctive contours are complemented by the company’s striking face (five point grille), piercing headlamps, and a steeply raked windscreen angle resulting in a sleek and svelte silhouette that’s a world away from its more pedestrian-looking people-carrier rivals.

Getting in and out of the Mazda5 is now even easier. Its large, twin sliding rear doors – a ‘first in class’ feature unique for the Mazda5 in its sector – open to a wide 686mm and extend just 160mm beyond the bodywork when open, provide exceptional access in even the tightest spaces. Access is enhanced by a broad 130mm foot step and low 439mm step-up into the cabin. Perfect, in other words, for entering the Mazda5’s rear when carrying a child. Sport models come with power sliding doors as standard.

The Mazda5 is the last word in packaging flexibility and generous space for on-the-go families. Key to this versatility is its innovative seven-seat layout, which offers excellent packaging flexibility and generous space for all on board. The three rows of seats create a wide range of passenger-luggage combinations – from seven seats for friends and family on shorter journeys, to four seats with a generous luggage compartment for longer journeys to just two seats and a vast, flat-floored cargo area for hauling larger items.

Its seven seats can be flipped and folded to create a variety of load-carrying configurations. The 112- litre loadbay in seven-seat mode can be enlarged to 426 litres in four-seat configuration, while folding all five rear seats flat creates a vast loadbay of 857 litres (floor to belt-height) or ceiling loadbay of 1,566 litres (floor to roof). Perfect then, for flat-pack furniture fans.

The Mazda5 range debuts with the choice of three engines. The two petrol-powered MZR units – a 115ps 1.8-litre and a 150ps 2.0-litre DISI – are joined by a 115ps 1.6-litre MZ-CD turbo diesel unit. The three powertrains are all Euro Stage 5 compliant and drive the front axle through slick six-speed manual transmissions.

The flagship MZR 2.0-litre engine features DISI Direct Injection Spark Ignition and emissions-busting stop/start i-stop technologies. The system helps deliver some exceptional figures. Combined economy climbs 14.2 percent to 40.9mpg and CO2 emissions drop a full 15 percent to 159g/km over the outgoing 2.0-litre petrol engine. Performance is equally strong with a 0-62mph time of 11 seconds and a 120mph top speed.

The MZR 1.8-litre powertrain has undergone a raft of upgrades – including the introduction of new lightweight pistons and connecting rods as well as an electric control throttle valve. These upgrades result in a four percent economy boost to 39.2mpg and a six percent CO2 emissions drop to 168g/km over the outgoing 1.8-litre model. The MZR touches 62mph in 12.8 seconds and posts a 113mph maximum speed.

Featuring third-generation common-rail fuel injection, a turbocharger with and a DPF diesel particulate filter, MZ-CD 1.6-litre packs a technical punch, accelerating to 62mph in 13.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 111mph, while returning an excellent fuel economy figure of 54.3mpg (combined cycle) and posts tax-friendly CO2 emissions of just 138g/km.

Mazda Motor Corporation will hold the global unveiling of the all-new Mazda BT-50 compact pickup truck at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show during a press conference on Friday, 15 October 2010. The all-new BT-50 will be centre stage on the Mazda stand throughout the show.

The all-new Mazda BT-50 is presented as an “active lifestyle vehicle” that overturns the conventional image of a compact pickup truck with modern and refined styling.

The new model was developed from the ground up as a brand new type of vehicle. Besides great looks, strength and dependability, the all-new BT-50 provides the perfect solution for a wide range of customers who lead active lifestyles, including families, workers and pleasure seekers.

The exterior design features crisp lines that owners will look on with pride. The athletic and individual design gives the all-new BT-50 a road presence that turns heads and makes it instantly recognisable as a Mazda.

The styling of the all-new Mazda BT-50 increases anticipation of the driving pleasure to come and represents a new direction in the compact pickup market. It is a global model that will also be sold in Europe.

Another significant display at this year’s Australian International Motor Show is Mazda’s range of next-generation SKY Concept* powertrains, which will be making their Australian debut. Mazda’s 2007 “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” commitment is to reduce overall average fuel economy levels by 30 percent by 2015 when compared with 2008 levels, and the Mazda SKY-G* gasoline and SKY-D* diesel engine concepts will play a significant part in achieving this ambitious target.

“British motorists love sportscars and engineering excellence, so it is no wonder that over the last seven years the RX-8 has been close to their hearts. More than 26,000 enthusiastic drivers have purchased an RX-8 in the UK, won over by its truly exhilarating drive, fascinating super-smooth rotary engine and many unique features, combined with everyday reliability and practicality,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales Director, Mazda UK.

“Production in Hiroshima of right hand drive Mazda RX-8 for the UK market has now ended and here we have fewer than 100 examples remaining in stock. Over the next couple of months drivers will be presented with a rare opportunity to acquire one of the very last RX-8s available in the UK. Its immense driver appeal, the world’s only rotary-powered production car is still a head-turner, with tremendous road presence and styling that still looks fresh. A few lucky customers are going to play a part in the grand finale of this motoring legend,” adds Cameron.

The 2010 embodiment of Mazda’s unique sports coupe, the Mazda RX-8 R3, is remarkably impressive for a host of reasons, including its freestyle doors that ensure easy access and also make it a ‘use-me-every-day’ kind of car.

Powered by an improved version of the unique 231ps twin-rotor engine, the latest car delivers a heightened experience with faster steering, chassis and engine responses, more refinement, more equipment and even greater value. It continues to feature the front-midship engine, rear-wheel drive configuration of the original, delivering an ideal 50/50 weight distribution for fantastic handling characteristics.

“Mazda RX-8 R3 is the ultimate expression of Mazda’s DNA, demonstrating our brand’s determination to do things differently. The RX-8 has won 37 major international awards and the R3 version delivers an even more focused and sporty driving experience, while retaining the original model’s many unique technical innovations and adding premium features,” concludes Cameron.

The Mazda RX-8 R3 is priced at £25,540 (on-the-road) and represents incredibly good value for a 231ps sportscar with the ability to reach 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.

The uniquely high-revving (up to 9,000rpm) RENESIS engine of the Mazda RX-8 R3 is evolved to deliver sharper responses. Maximum power is 231ps at 8200rpm and the six-speed manual gearbox has a lower final drive ratio for a sharper getaway from standstill and improved performance feel.

The interior of the RX-8 R3 features new Recaro sports seats in the front, a new-style steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth® connectivity and cruise control. Buyers will also enjoy the new BOSE®premium audio system with an eight-channel amplifier, 6-CD autochanger, nine speakers and an auxiliary (AUX) input jack for connecting an MP3 player.

The name ‘Takuya’ – pronounced ‘tah-koy-yah’ – is taken from the Japanese for forerunner or pioneer. Available in Mazda showrooms across the UK from 1 July 2010 the new variants are available in the Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6 model line-ups and offer added value to customers.

The generously equipped new Takuya models incorporate features normally only available with top‑of-the-range derivatives, including exterior sports styling, larger alloy wheels, a Bluetooth® system and a sports interior.

Mazda2 Takuya – compact and sporty

Priced from £11,915 (OTR), the 1.3-litre Mazda2 five-door Takuya is the entry point into the special edition range. The Takuya boasts 16-inch alloy wheels, a sports styling kit (incorporating spoiler, sports bumpers and side skirts) and front fog lights. The interior benefits from black sports trim, trip computer, leather steering wheel and gear knob, steering wheel remote audio controls and a Parrot Bluetooth® hands-free kit.

The 1.3 Mazda2 (86ps) is a remarkably frugal yet feisty model. The hatchback produces just 125g/km CO2 and returns 54.3mpg, yet is one of the finest handling and fun to drive superminis on sale in the UK.

Mazda3 Takuya – added appeal for popular hatch

Moving up through the Mazda range, buyers will find the 1.6-litre Mazda3 five-door Takuya. This model boasts a very impressive specification including a leather steering wheel and shift knob, automatic dual-zone climate control air conditioning, black sports interior trim, sports seats, an integrated Bluetooth® system, LED lights, a six-disc CD changer and rain-sensing wipers.

Priced from just £15,780 the incredibly well appointed Mazda3 Takuya represents excellent value for money. Boasting a combined fuel economy figure of 44.8mpg and a low-for-class 149g/km CO2 emissions, the 105ps 1.6-litre hatchback will follow the Mazda2 Takuya’s lead and offer unrivalled fun behind the wheel.

Mazda6 Takuya – frugal family fun

Mazda6 buyers will find Takuya special edition models in three different guises: 2.0-litre five-door (£19,845), 2.2D 163ps five-door (£20,945) and 2.2D 163ps Estate (£21,595). All three variants benefit from the fitment of 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports grille and dusk-sensing headlights on the exterior, while the interior benefits from an alloy pedal set, half-leather heated seats, auto-dimming rear view mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning, leather steering wheel and shift knob and a choice of paint colours.

Vehicles fitted with the 2.0-litre petrol powerplant are capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds en route to a 134mph maximum speed. Combined fuel economy of 40.9mpg is achievable and CO2 emissions of 159g/km put the petrol Mazda6 in road tax band G. Meanwhile, the 2.2D 163ps models return an impressive 52.3mpg combined and produce 142g/km CO2 (five-door; estate produces 143g/km CO2). Both versions hit 62mph in just 9.2 seconds.

“The new Mazda Takuya range offers buyers genuine exclusivity, evocative sports styling and represents fantastic value for money,” comments Mark Cameron, sales director, Mazda UK.

“Previous Special Edition Mazda models have proved hugely popular, fast selling and boast impressive residual values. The Takuya range offers yet another reason for value-seeking consumers that want something different to the mainstream to head down to their local Mazda dealership this summer.”

The new model, which is on sale from 1 July, is available in two versions – the 1.8i Miyako soft-top priced at £18,385 (on-the-road) and the more powerful 2.0i Miyako roadster coupe with the world’s fastest folding powered roof (up or down in 12 seconds), priced at £20,885 (on-the-road).

The name ‘Miyako’ is taken from the idyllic Japanese holiday island of Miyako-jima, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful spots in Japan and the perfect location for open-top motoring.

The new Miyako is generously equipped with the interior benefitting from unique Medici premium perforated black leather trim with a red underlay and stitching, special badging, floor mats and climate control air-conditioning. The exterior includes front fog lamps, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, a front suspension strut brace (for improved steering response), and free metallic paint.

“The new Mazda MX-5 Miyako will have extra appeal to a broader range of customers, including those who recognise the uniquely pure driving pleasure this Mazda continues to deliver, and those who aspire to owning a special edition model,” comments Mark Cameron, sales director, Mazda UK.

“This is the first special edition model based on the upgraded MX-5 that we have offered on both soft‑top and roadster coupe body styles and I am sure it will attract new buyers to our brand. Both models also represent great value, with the 2.0i Miyako costing just £590 more than the entry level 2.0 SE model.”

The 1.8i 126ps Miyako soft-top accelerates to 62mph in a brisk 9.9 seconds, while the 2.0i Miyako roadster coupe with its 160ps engine undercuts that time by two seconds. Combined mpg and CO2 ratings are 40.4/38.2mpg and 167/177g/km, respectively. Both Miyako models carry generous equipment levels with many features as standard including: remote central locking, a leather steering wheel with audio controls, an MP3 compatible audio system with six speakers and auxiliary (AUX) jack input, as well as heated electric mirrors and electric front windows, a Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser. In addition, Limited Slip Differential (LSD), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Traction Control System (TCS) are included on the 2.0i.

Both versions of the MX-5 Miyako will be available in Aluminium Silver Metallic, while the soft-top will also be available in Velocity Red Mica – free of charge. Just 500 examples of each version will be manufactured for the UK market.

“Our main goal with the all-new Mazda5,” says Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Programme Manager, “was to develop a new C-MAV that combines the superior environmental performance these times demand with a new expression in stylish design.”

The all-new model further evolves Mazda5’s acclaimed functionality – with double-sliding rear doors and 7-seat Karakuri flexibility – and dresses it in a suit of clothes that is as eye-catching as it is unique to the segment. This design, which also uses elements of Mazda’s “Nagare Flow” design language, is highly functional and contributes to fuel efficiency by having a particularly low drag coefficient, and optimal lift and air-swirl characteristics.

The all-new Mazda5 is fitted with a newly-developed 2.0-litre DISI1 petrol engine equipped with i-stop, and a six-speed manual transmission with gear ratios specific to this version. This new direct-injection petrol offers linear and smooth performance characteristics and is fun to drive. It is also one of the most frugal and clean C-MAVs on the market, achieving approximately 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 2.0-litre petrol it replaces. The gasoline line-up features a 1.8-litre engine with a six-speed manual transmission as well.

The all-new Mazda5 will go on sale in Europe this fall. It is one of three premieres that will be unveiled at Mazda’s press conference to be held at the Mazda stand in Hall 5, on 2 March.

Power.

In the largest survey of Germany’s automobile market, Mazda3 scored 85.6 percent for overall customer satisfaction – ahead of the Mercedes A-Class with 84.8 percent and the Hyundai i30, which scored 84 percent. Customer satisfaction of German car owners was calculated from answers given in four categories of questions – Quality/Dependability, Vehicle Appeal, Service and Operating Costs. All categories carry the same weight, and together form the J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI).

In the rankings that reflect customer satisfaction for individual car brands, Mazda achieved an average of 83.1 percent. This ranked fourth on the list of 25 brands, and once again outperformed the industry average of 81.3 percent.

This year’s J.D. Power CSI was based on a poll of about 16,500 German car owners, who were asked to evaluate their automobiles, which were on average two years old. Results for all customer satisfaction categories, 25 nameplates and 102 car-lines will be published in detail in the July 2010 issue of Germany’s AUTO TEST on 25 June 2010.

More than 17,000 car owners across the UK took part in the annual survey. Owners of Mazda‟s iconic two-seater sports car gave their cars top scores for appearance, exterior and interior quality and mechanical reliability, performance, running costs and also for dealer service.

After the votes were in, the Mazda MX-5 achieved a satisfaction rating of 82.3 percent – beating out luxury sports cars like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, and the Audi TT, as well as the VW Eos – to claim „Best-in-Class‟ honours.
The MX-5 is no stranger to finishing at the top of JD Power surveys, and has been voted best in the sports car category often and in many countries around the globe. Owners have consistently praised the roadster for being an affordable, durable and extremely fun-to-drive sports car for twenty years. And it is no stranger to automotive awards. It has won over 160 of them, while finding 870,000 owners worldwide, and becoming one of the industry‟s truly cult vehicles with fanatical enthusiasts on every continent.

Since launch of a power-retractable hardtop version in 2006, the MX-5 line-up has been more popular than ever before. Last year it held 22 percent of the non-premium sports segment in the UK, homeland of the two-seat roadster, and was second in Europe with an estimated share of 12 percent.
“The JD Power survey results in the UK are important because Brits are really passionate about sports cars in general,” said Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe. “But these results reflect more than just how much they love to drive their MX-5. They also show how practical and easy to live with our roadster is on a daily basis. It combines low running costs, legendary reliability and good service with thrilling, open-top sports car fun. No wonder it continues to be so popular.

The award completes a stunning quartet of titles for the Mazda6 Estate, which earlier this year won ‘Best Estate Car’ awards from both Fleet News and What Car? magazines and was named ‘Towcar of the Year 2010’ by The Caravan Club.

The Fleet World Honours are presented annually to those motor manufacturers, service companies and individuals who have, in the opinion of the judges, achieved the highest possible level of excellence in their sector.

Chairman of Judges, Steve Moody said: “Mazda continues to build on its solid reputation in the fleet market as a manufacturer of stylish and attractive cars. But it also features all the clever touches we have come to expect from Mazda, converting from a five-seater into a load-lugger in a matter of seconds.”

The exact specification for the model that received this honours award was the Mazda6 2.2-litre Diesel Estate TS² 163ps manual and is priced at £20,559 on-the-road. Its strong residual values, keen pricing and competitive CO2 emissions saw the Mazda6 Estate beat off stiff competition including theSkoda Superb Estate, Toyota Avensis Estate and Honda Accord Estate to be named ‘Best Estate Car’ at the 2010 Fleet World Honours Car Awards.

Peter Alibon, Fleet and Remarketing Director for Mazda UK commented “Mazda has yet again successfully combined a sporty appeal with a very practical model creating that competitive edge in the D-segment. This further recognition from the fleet industry represents the superb reputation that the Mazda6 range has developed over the past eight years since the original launch.

“We have firm hopes that this will continue as the Upgraded Mazda6 launched this spring represents great value for fleet operators with strong residual values, keen pricing, driver appeal and impressive CO² emissions.”

Commenting on the high standard of entries in this year’s awards, Fleet World Managing Editor, Ross Durkin said: “The fleet industry is emerging from a period of economic uncertainty but, fortunately, is now robust again.”

The upgraded 19-model Mazda6 range has recently entered showrooms with a choice of two body styles (hatchback and estate), six engines (three petrol and three diesel) and four equipment levels: S, TS, TS2, and Sport. The Mazda6 Estate 2.0 TS is priced from just £19,295 on-the-road. The estate diesel model emissions reduced to below 150g/km to help offset April 2010 5g/km increases in company car tax thresholds and rises in VED rates on cars with emissions of 151g/km and above.

On sale now and priced from £16,995 to £23,445 on the road, the Upgraded Mazda6 is perfectly poised to retain its position as the most athletic, engaging and stylish hatchback and estate in the fiercely competitive family car sector.

The upgraded Mazda6 is immediately distinguishable by its restyled front and rear – it now features Mazda’s distinctive new family face complete with restyled silver-backed headlamps and fog lamp bezels for a dynamic and incisive visage. Similarly, the rear of both hatch and estate features striking new taillights.

These exterior changes are complemented by stylistic enhancements and equipment upgrades to the cabin. Inside, Mazda’s designers have introduced new silver ringed dials and controls in the driver’s instrument binnacle, while the centre console and steering wheel spokes are finished in high-gloss piano-black trim. The sweeping dashboard also receives a softer and more tactile casing for a heightened sense of quality.

The Mazda6’s four familiar equipment levels – S, TS, TS2 and Sport – all deliver class-leading levels of standard safety and convenience equipment. Upgraded equipment for the new upgraded Mazda6 encompasses ‘smart’ turn indicators and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for all models, while models further up the range benefit from a new aerodynamic rear spoiler, front and rear parking sensors, Hill Hold Assist and active Bi-Xenon AFS front lights.

The new Mazda6 range comes with choice of six engines – three petrol and three turbo diesel powerplants, available with five and six-speed manual transmissions or five-speed automatic gearboxes. The petrol engine line-up comprises the 120ps MZR 1.8-litre, the new MZR DISI 155ps 2.0-litre and the punchy 170ps MZR 2.5-litre performance flagship, while the diesel range comprises three variants of Mazda’s acclaimed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo-charged unit that deliver 129ps, 163ps and 180ps.

All powerplants have been tuned to deliver better economy and lower emissions, delivering exceptionally competitive CO2 emission levels from just 138g/km and combined economy of up to 54.3mpg. Across the range, the diesel engines are now 4.1 percent more economical and benefit from a 4.8 percent drop in average CO2 emission levels. The petrol powerplants enjoy similar gains, with a 3.2 percent average increase in fuel economy and a 4.4 percent drop in average CO2 emissions.

The Mazda6’s award-winning dynamism and athleticism has been further enhanced by an extensive raft of upgrades to the car’s steering and suspension. The electrically assisted steering has been retuned for greater accuracy and feedback, while the double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension layouts now feature uprated dampers and have been fine-tuned to deliver improved handling stability and ride comfort.

Its bold new styling, extensive range of clean and fuel-efficient petrol and turbo-diesel engines, higher levels of standard safety and luxury features and enhanced driving dynamics, the refreshed Mazda6 is ideally positioned to deliver exceptional value for money for private and corporate buyers alike.

To meet strong demand for the popular Mazda6 from both retail and fleet customers, Mazda UK brought forwards the ‘on sale’ date for the upgraded Mazda6 models for 2010. Now in Mazda dealer showrooms, the new 19-strong range features refreshed exterior and interior styling, additional equipment and a range of significant technical enhancements that improve fuel economy by up to 6.4 percent and reduced CO2 emissions by up to 6.1 percent.

Customers are offered a choice of two body styles** (hatchback and estate), six engines (three petrol and three diesel) and four equipment levels – S, TS, TS2, and Sport.

Improved fuel economy, lower Road Fund Licence bands and reduced Benefit In Kind costs offer buyers significant savings, while prices for the upgraded Mazda6 now range from £16,995 to £23,445 on-the-road, increased by an average of just 4.8 percent.

“Distinctive styling has always given the Mazda6 ‘stand-out’ looks from other family cars and the refreshed model has an even more sophisticated appearance,” comments Mark Cameron, Sales Director, Mazda UK. “Dynamic and engaging driving characteristics have also played a big part in the success of Mazda6 and they remain at the heart of the new model.”

“The upgraded Mazda6 has been given a make-over that is much more than a cosmetic exercise. While the car has more aggressive front styling, the engines, suspension and steering have been fine-tuned, enhancing refinement. Mazda6 remains among the best-in-class for CO2 emissions and its ownership experience is underpinned by reduced costs and Mazda’s outstanding build quality and reliability,” adds Cameron.

“With a continuing list price advantage versus the competition and lower rates of depreciation, we expect the revised Mazda6 to retain its leading position in the fleet market and provide a springboard for further fleet sales growth as it appeals to even more company car drivers. During the next 12 months, we expect to sell more than 10,500 new Mazda6 models in the UK – a rise of approximately 1,500 units compared with last year – with about 72 percent destined for fleet buyers,” concludes Cameron.

Retuned engines deliver reduced CO2 emissions

A new 2-litre DISI petrol engine delivers 155ps (up from 147ps), while the lower power 2.2-litre diesel generates more power and torque – up 4ps to 129ps and up 20Nm to 340Nm at 1,800rpm. The highest power 2.2-litre diesel now produces 180ps (down 5ps) but modifications to the turbocharger boost torque delivery (while aiding fuel economy and cutting emissions), and its overall excellent performance is retained.

A Sport 2.0-litre petrol model with Mazda’s five-speed automatic transmission is introduced after dealers reported a latent demand for a top-of-the-range model with this specification.

The upgraded Mazda6 achieves fuel economy average improvements of 3.2 and 4.1 percent (petrol/diesel) and CO2emissions reductions that average 4.4 and 4.8 percent (petrol/diesel), so the lower power 2.2-litre, 129ps diesel hatchback now has a rating of just 138g/km. These improvements move many models into a lower RFL band. All new Mazda6 models now meet Euro5 emission standards***.

Four, highly specified equipment levels

Although Mazda is keeping the upgraded Mazda6 range as simple as possible, buyers will continue to be offered a broad choice of powertrains and specifications, with each of the four equipment levels – S, TS, TS2, and Sport – highly specified within its price band.

Upgraded equipment for the new Mazda6 encompasses ‘smart’ turn indicators and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for all models. Additional items for 2010, moving up the range include: rear spoiler (TS upwards); front & rear parking sensors and Hill Hold Assist (TS2 upwards), and swivel‑type AFS front lights (Sport).

A choice of eight exterior colours is available – including a single solid colour (Brilliant Black), two metallics (Clear Water Blue and Sunlight Silver), and five micas (Black, Graphite, Stormy Blue, Copper Red and Crystal White Pearl). Standard interior trim is Black cloth (S, TS and TS2), with part cloth/part leather trim on Sport models. Full leather trim is now available as an option on all TS2 and Sport models (priced at £1,150 and £750, respectively), and includes powered driver and front passenger seats with a memory function on the driver’s seat.

Even stronger appeal for fleet customers

“The Mazda6 was the model that put our brand on the fleet map. Now, with a range of revised engines delivering significant CO2 emissions reductions, we are confident that demand among core company car drivers for the upgraded model will rise,” comments Peter Allibon, Fleet and Remarketing Director, Mazda UK.

“Together with CO2 emissions reduced by between 3.1 and 6.1 percent, and cuts of up to 10g/km on a model-for-model basis, upgraded Mazda6 delivers benefit-in-kind tax savings for company car drivers and a range of financial savings on other vehicle-related taxes for companies – such as Class 1A National Insurance contributions paid on benefits-in-kind, Vehicle Excise Duty and capital allowances,” adds Allibon.

Although the power output of the 2.0-litre petrol engine has been raised (from 147 up to 155ps), Mazda6 models with this powerunit are among the most ‘improved’ for CO2 emissions with the estate down 10g/km to 161 and the hatchback down 9g/km to just 159 – putting the hatch in the 20% company car tax bracket for 2010/11.

Power output on the ‘low power’ 2.2-litre diesel engine is increased from 125ps to 129ps, but its CO2 emissions in the hatchback are reduced from 147g/km to 138g/km putting this model in the 19% company car tax bracket in 2010/11.

All estate diesel model CO2 emissions are now below 150g/km to help offset the April 2010 5g/km increases in company car tax thresholds and rises in VED rates on cars with emissions of 151g/km and above.

Although list prices across the upgraded Mazda6 range have risen, the line-up remains extremely competitive versus the competition. The benefit-in-kind tax bills have been trimmed by up to £4.67 / £9.35 (for a 20% / 40% taxpayer), and now span from a low of £53.15 to a high of £182.2 for a 40% taxpayer.

Mazda expects the residual values of the upgraded Mazda6 to improve even further as a result of the revised model’s reduced emissions and improved specification – a view that is endorsed by Jeff Knight, Forecast Manager at CAP.

“The Mazda6 has achieved first-class residual values throughout its history and that is unlikely to change with the latest version. Experts at CAP think that residual values for the upgraded Mazda6 will improve particularly on the TS2 grade where the styling revisions are at their most effective. This bodes well for the best-selling TS2 163ps diesel and the TS ‘low power’ diesel model as they already retain 35 percent of their value over three years/60,000 miles,” comments Knight.

This is the first in a series of short articles taking a critical look at manufacturers websites from a customer viewpoint. Mazda UK pulled the short straw as I decided that Joe Public, our online customer was looking for a Mazda3.

Just to add spice to the reviews and to make things more difficult for all sites, I’ll be using Google Chrome on a Mac as my browser of choice and I live out in the country with only a 1Mb link on a good day. Why Chrome? Because most developers look after IE and Firefox users. Chrome is now more popular than IE, Safari and Opera so it will show if developers are keeping up with trends. My broadband link (if you could call it broadband) will irritate the hell out of me on sites that rely on Flash and oversized images. So Let’s start.

As I’m resident in the UK the first thing I noticed was the declaration in small print on the Home page.

Please note: Some images are for illustration purposes only and may not be to UK specification or may contain extras available at an additional cost.

I really find this a bit of a cheapskate move, that a manufacturer can’t afford to have images that relate accurately to the local market. So which bits don’t relate to my new Mazda3?

“Flash” movie on the Home page. That’ll leave a big hole browsing on the iPhone/iPad.

Selected Mazda3 from Home page menu and sorry but another No-No on the Mazda3 page. Another “Flash” movie, but this time with music! The boss just caught me browsing at work!

Apart from the arty movie which is all dark and flashing lights and doesn’t let me see my Mazda3 there’s nothing to grab the user. No images to show the different body styles. Selecting the “Image Gallery” just shows some more arty oblique images without any indication of model or style.

“Mazda3 Specs & prices” allows me to select Saloon or Hatchback with other options for Features and Options but I’ve been on the site now for realistically 5 minutes and haven’t seen an image of a Mazda3 apart from the arty stuff which is just eye-candy.

There’s no visual means to distinguish a Saloon from a Hatchback.

As a customer experience, and with 90% of potential customers using the internet prior to visiting a showroom, it was pretty poor.
No images of our Mazda3, not even any information regarding colour choice. As a regional corporate site it lacked a professional developers touch.

Mazda UK: 4/10

Mazda UK broke the 50,000 annual sales barrier for only the second time in its history for the fiscal year 2009 to 2010. The month also marked the company’s second best March for passenger car sales with customers driving away in more than 10,000 new Mazda vehicles.

“While the scrappage scheme played some part in pushing the company to new heights, it was only about 17 percent of the month’s total sales,” explained Jeremy Thomson, managing director for Mazda UK. “What has really driven our sales is a very healthy retail mix with 70 percent of total sales to private buyers, well ahead of the industry average of around 55 percent.”

This shows the “tremendous underlying strength” of the brand, its products and dealer network, highlighted Thomson.

Mazda UK’s policy of focusing on its core retail customers and profitable small fleet business is also helping dealers make money – return on sales for Mazda’s 154-strong dealer network is some 50 percent higher than the industry average, he said.

Mazda2 has been a star performer for the brand with total sales for the financial year to March topping 20,000, which is some 7,000 more than in financial year April 2008 to March 2009.

One of the surprises in this recession year has been the legendary Mazda MX-5 where sales of 5,000 – one in ten of Mazda’s total – were only 600 down on the previous year. “The MX-5 has proved surprisingly recession proof and is a real brand icon for us,” said Thomson.

Mazda’s success in March saw it grab a 2.6 percent slice of the UK market, up from 2.4 percent during most of the previous 12 months.

Strong residual values, keen pricing and competitive CO2 emissions see the Mazda6 Estate beat off stiff competition to be named ‘Best Estate Car’ at the 2010 Fleet News Awards – the industry ‘Oscars’.

Recognition from the leading industry publication represents a superb swansong for the current Mazda6 range as the manufacturer gears up to launch a revised line-up over the coming weeks.

The award was presented at a glittering ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday (March 17, 2010) with the independent panel of fleet expert judges declaring: “The Mazda6 Estate combines excellent practicality with genuine driver appeal thanks to its huge load volume, engaging drive and powerful diesel engines.

“It represents great value for fleet operators with strong residual values, while its keen pricing and competitive CO2 emissions make it a tempting proposition when it comes to driver taxation.

“It is also very well equipped and comes with excellent safety features, including an audible rear blindspot warning on some models. Folding the rear seats results in a flat load area allowing the Mazda6 to swallow an enormous cargo. With sharp handling, first-rate build quality and good levels of comfort, it offers fleets a capable workhorse estate that is also desirable for drivers.”

The judges concluded: “The Mazda6 combines flexibility with driver appeal and is a good deal for fleets from a financial point of view.”

The triumph in this year’s Fleet News Awards comes 12 months after the Mazda6 was named ‘Best Large Family Car’ at last year’s ‘Oscars’ and the Mazda6 scooping the ‘Family Car’ and ‘Estate Car’ categories at the What Car? Car of the Year 2010 Awards.

The Mazda6 was the car that put the company on the fleet map when it first entered showrooms eight years ago.

Following the latest awards win for the current generation Mazda6, Fleet and Remarketing Director Peter Allibon said: “The Mazda6 has always been a compelling package for fleets, which has been recognised by this year’s Fleet News Awards’ judges.

“We are delighted that the current model’s sector-leading credentials have secured another fleet award, but all eyes are now focused on the new model, which delivers an even more compelling proposition to the corporate sector thanks to lower CO2 emissions (down by up to 6.1 percent), improved fuel economy (up to 6.4 percent) and better performance from upgraded engines.”

CO2 has been cut by up to 10g/km on a model-for-model basis across the Mazda6 range delivering benefit-in-kind tax savings for company car drivers and financial savings on a range of other vehicle-related taxes for companies – Class 1A National Insurance contributions paid on benefits-in-kind, Vehicle Excise Duty and capital allowances.

Estate diesel model emissions all reduce to below 150g/km to help offset April 2010 5g/km increases in company car tax thresholds and rises in VED rates on cars with emissions of 151g/km and above.

The revised 19-model Mazda6 range will enter showrooms shortly with a choice of two body styles (hatchback and estate), six engines (three petrol and three diesel) and four equipment levels – S, TS, TS2, and Sport. Priced from £16,990 on-the-road for the Mazda6 1.8 5dr S with the Estate range starting at £19,290 for the Mazda6 Estate 2.0 TS.

“The upgraded Mazda6 has been given a make-over that is much more than a cosmetic exercise. While the car has more aggressive front styling, the engines, suspension and steering have been fine-tuned enhancing the refinement of the driving experience. Mazda6 remains among the best-in-class for CO2 emissions and its ownership experience is underpinned by reduced costs and Mazda’s outstanding build quality and reliability,” adds Cameron.

The highest power 2.2-litre diesel now produces 180ps (down 5ps) but modifications to the turbocharger boost torque delivery whilst facilitating improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions which therefore sees it retaining its overall excellence in performance.

A Sport 2.0-litre petrol model with Mazda’s five-speed automatic transmission is introduced after dealers reported a latent demand for a top-of-the-range model with this specification.

The upgraded Mazda6 achieves fuel economy average improvements of 3.2 and 4.1 percent (petrol/diesel) and CO2 emissions reductions that average 4.4 and 4.8 percent (petrol/diesel), so the lower power 2.2-litre, 129ps diesel hatchback now has a rating of just 138g/km.

Upgraded equipment for the new Mazda6 encompasses ‘smart’ turn indicators and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for the ‘S’ grade and all other models. Additional items moving up the range include: rear spoiler (TS upwards), front & rear parking sensors and Hill Hold Assist (HHA), (TS2 upwards), and swivel-type AFS front lights (Sport).

Full leather trim is now available as an option on all TS2 and Sport models and includes powered driver and front passenger seats with a memory function on the driver’s seat.
