September heralds the arrival of the ‘61’ registration plate and MINI is marking a decade of outstanding success with a range of attractive value for money offers to tempt new car buyers.

Its 10 years that has been a triumph for MINI and UK plc, with the first Hatch models launched in summer 2001, MINI has produced more than two million cars, is currently selling in almost 100 countries and employs round 5,000 people in the UK.

Key to the brand’s appeal continues to be the legendary ‘go-kart’ handling and iconic design heritage. But every new MINI also offers the customer MINIMALISM technology – which means the car is kinder to the environment – as well as boasting low whole-life running costs.

In fact, MINI is ranked within the top five motoring manufacturers for its low CO2 emissions throughout its whole range*. Drivers don’t have to compromise on performance when considering the environment with the frugal new Cooper SD engine offering CO2 emissions as low as 114g/km, a whopping 65.7 mpg on the combined cycle and a nimble top speed of 134mph.

Buyers in and around the nation’s capital should get behind the wheel of the MINI One D or MINI Cooper D, as both are exempt from the city’s Congestion Charge.

Highlighting just how affordable buying a new MINI is, the MINI First with a ‘61’ registration is available at low-rate finance for just £169 a month with a customer deposit of only £1,499.

Buyers choosing One petrol versions of the MINI Hatch, Convertible, Clubman and Countryman can also benefit from appealing September offers:

* MINI One Hatch: £199 a month with a customer deposit of just £1,699.

* MINI One Convertible: £209 a month with a customer deposit of just £2,499.

* MINI One Clubman: £209 a month with a customer deposit of just £1,999.

* MINI One Countryman: £249 a month with a customer deposit of just £1,894. Unique to this finance offer is a £500 deposit contribution from MINI.

All deals include the ever-popular Pepper pack, adding desirable additional features at no extra cost, and MINI’s acclaimed TLC servicing package for five years/50,000 miles.

If that’s not enough MINI for your money, there’s more. For all MINI Hatch, Convertible and Clubman models (including One, Diesel, Cooper, Cooper D, Cooper S and Cooper SD), dealers will help customers add extra specification to their car.

When placing the order, buyers can customise their new purchase any way they want – choosing from MINI’s extensive list of styling, comfort, convenience and technology options – and the dealer will knock a massive £500 off the final bill, no questions asked.

This summer MINI Hatch and MINI Convertible models are available in a special, limited edition called MINI Soho. Earlier this year the company announced that all MINI Special Editions will be named after London boroughs, districts, streets and landmarks.

The Soho name has been introduced to MINI Hatch and Convertible models for a limited time following the success of the popular MINI Soho Clubman edition last year. The MINI Soho edition will be available in both Cooper and Cooper D models from July until March 2012. Thanks to the MINI Cooper D Hatch’s frugal credentials it is exempt from London Congestion charging with CO2 of just 99g/km and a whopping 74.3mpg* fuel consumption .

MINI Soho editions have exclusive ‘White Silver’ metallic paint which is not available on any other current MINI Hatch or Convertible model, and to compliment the striking paintwork the Soho is finished with 17″ Black Star Bullet alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with black interior reflectors and white indicators.

Inside the cabin the Soho has a sporty feel with Anthracite headlining, a 3-Spoke sport leather steering wheel and ‘Piano Black’ interior surfaces.

Motor sport is in the MINI genes. And now the carmaker is set to add a new chapter to its racing heritage with the arrival of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance. The newly developed racer will line up at this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit, previewing the series-production version of the car due to be unveiled to the public in autumn 2011.

With the participation of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance, the Nürburgring 24-hour race will be staging an automotive world premiere for the first time in its history. At the same time, the extreme demands of the classic endurance event ensure the new MINI model will be given a baptism of fire.

MINI’s declared aim in entering the Nürburgring 24-hour race is to experience the adventure of the “Green Hell”, as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is affectionately known. And the brand has called, among other things, on the experience gained over many years of MINI Challenge sprint racing in the development of its
new racing car for this unique event.

A pure-bred racing set-up will equip the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance for a full day lapping the combined Nordschleife/Grand Prix circuit at race speed. Providing the power is a specially-tuned version of the series-produced MINI John Cooper Works engine. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit – which boasts a
twin-scroll turbocharger and petrol direct injection – delivers 250 hp, and the Overboost function pushes peak torque up to 330 Newton metres. Top speed is in excess of 240 km/h.

The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance sees the brand’s customary go-kart feeling taken to a whole new level. The stiff race suspension ensures impressive roadholding and gives the driver constant, direct feedback from the road surface. Adjustable shock absorber units allow the suspension set-up to be adapted to fluctuating track conditions, a feature that will come in particularly
handy at the Nordschleife.

The more steeply raked windscreen of the car’s flat coupé silhouette sets it apart clearly from the Hatch and helps to minimise aerodynamic drag, which the drivers will acknowledge with a smile on the circuit’s long straights.

The John Cooper Works Aerodynamics Package further enhances the Coupé’s already supreme handling; the front spoiler, rear diffuser and adjustable rear wing generate downforce, optimising the balance
between the front and rear axle.

The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance achieves an exceptionally high level of safety thanks to features including a roll cage welded to the body and a sports bucket seat with six-point safety belt and Formula One-style HANS (Head And Neck Support) system. When it comes to active safety, the car adopts the proven braking system with Race ABS from MINI Challenge racing and adds a specially tuned DSC dynamic control system, likewise optimised for the race track. Plus, in the interests of safety – and rapid pit
stops – the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance is kitted out with an integrated pneumatic jack.

And then there were five. The next exciting chapter in the continuing MINI success story has begun with the launch of the all-new MINI Coupé, the fifth unique model in the family.
Selling alongside the MINI Hatch, Convertible, Clubman and Countryman, the British- built MINI Coupé is the first two-seater sports car in the UK brand’s long and proud history. It’s a contemporary and authentic reworking of the classic performance car concept, bringing MINI’s intoxicating blend of go-anywhere attitude and practicality to a new type of customer.
The MINI Coupé’s mission is a simple one; to maximise the thrill of being behind the wheel. Keen drivers will be rewarded with a level of handling agility unmatched in the small car segment. Every aspect of the MINI Coupé – from the choice of engines and chassis set-up to weight distribution and aerodynamics – is focused on delivering the optimum dynamic performance. To prove the point, the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé has the fastest acceleration and top speed of any volume-produced MINI to date.

The four-strong MINI range will go on sale through MINI dealers from 1st October 2011 and MINI Coupé customers can expect an exceptionally high standard of equipment including; DAB digital radio, air conditioning, park distance control, alloy wheels, 3-spoke sport leather steering wheel and sport stripes on the body work. A wide range of accessories and personalisation choices will be available.

MINI Cooper Coupe £16,640

MINI Cooper S Coupe £19,775

MINI Cooper SD Coupe £20,510

MINI Cooper Works Coupe £23,795

Striking styling meets practicality
Key to the MINI Coupé’s appeal is its stunning exterior design, unlike anything else in the compact sports car segment. Immediately identifiable as part of the MINI family, it’s a genuine and appealing re-interpretation of the classic MINI design cues which have become so familiar on UK roads in the last decade. The car’s design language – the clever combination of athletically sculpted surfaces, harmonious curves and parallel lines – takes the brand’s styling in an exciting new direction, with a fresh and clear emphasis on the marque’s sporting DNA.

The MINI Coupé is also an innovative new vehicle. It’s the first modern MINI to adopt the traditional ‘three-box’ body structure, splitting the car into distinct segments – the engine compartment, cabin and boot. While the overall length and width are almost identical to the dimensions of the MINI Hatch, the Coupé’s overall height is 29 millimetres lower. Visually, this and the stepped rear end give the car a more aggressive, forward-thrusting profile. The lower roofline doesn’t come at the expense of driver and passenger comfort, though. Oval recesses in the headlining provide extra headroom, perfectly illustrating MINI’s ‘no compromise’ ethos.

The styling team led by Head of Design Anders Warming has given the MINI Coupé a distinctive appearance from every angle. The most striking view is undoubtedly the profile, with horizontal layering of the car into three separate tiers – the body, the wrap-around glass and the eye-catching ‘helmet design’ roof. The A-pillars and windscreen are sharply raked by 13 ̊ compared to the MINI Hatch, resulting in a smaller frontal area that gives the MINI Coupé excellent aerodynamic properties.

Air flow is also optimised by the integrated spoiler at the rear of the roof, and via a unique active rear spoiler housed in the bootlid. It deploys automatically when the car reaches 50mph – and drops down again at 37mph – but can be operated manually via a button in the overhead control panel. The Coupé is the first MINI in history to feature an active rear spoiler, which reduces lift at the rear axle to improve aerodynamic balance and road grip.

MINI enthusiasts will immediately recognise the interior of the Coupé. The much- loved large central circular speedo, chrome toggle switches and numerous other MINI trademark features are all present in the two-seater cabin.

Behind is a spacious 280-litre luggage area – 20 litres larger than the MINI Clubman – easily accessible by the driver or passenger from inside the cabin as well as externally via the boot. The large, high-opening tailgate makes for simple loading and the car offers excellent cargo-carrying possibilities that will suit a wide range of needs. Whether it’s for daily routine, fun weekend leisure trips or more adventurous touring for two, the MINI Coupé is ideal transport.

Tried and tested engines
Power for the MINI Coupé comes from the latest generation of BMW Group four- cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Outputs range from 122 hp/90 kW in the MINI Cooper Coupé to 211 hp /155 kW in the highly desirable flagship MINI John Cooper Works Coupé. The recently launched performance diesel engine, the 143 hp/105 kW Cooper SD, is also available and the line-up is completed with the Cooper S which offers 184 hp /135kW.

Fuel economy on the combined cycle stretches from 39.8mpg in the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé to a frugal 65.7mpg in the Cooper SD model, while CO2 emissions are as low as just 114g/km on the Cooper SD. Even the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé emits only 165g/km. The full technical specification for each model is given below.

Likely to prove popular with many potential MINI Coupé customers is the Cooper SD variant, which offers the best fuel economy, lowest emissions highest torque output of any MINI. What’s more, it will still sprint to 62mph in under eight seconds and carry on to a top speed of 134mph. With a BIK value of just 13%, and zero first year road tax, user chooser company car drivers and fleet managers will also see its obvious appeal. No official figures are available yet, but the MINI Coupé is expected to have class-leading residual values.

MINI is expanding its product family with the launch of a model geared squarely to maximising driving fun. The MINI Coupé indulges the keen driver with a level of agility unmatched in the small car segment, along with a unique body and interior concept and the brand’s customary commitment to premium levels of quality and equipment. The first two-seater in its line-up sees MINI not only breathe new life into its successful racing history but also provide a shot in the arm for the super-compact sports car class. The selection of engines, chassis set-up, weight distribution and aerodynamic properties of the MINI Coupé are all focused on delivering optimum performance. As a result, the new car radiates the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling with a whole new depth of intensity and achieves the best performance statistics ever recorded by a volume-produced MINI.

The latest generation of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
The MINI Coupé can be ordered with the most powerful petrol and diesel engines in the brand’s arsenal. Outputs range from the 90 kW/122 hp of the MINI Cooper Coupé, to the MINI Cooper SD Coupé (105 kW/143 hp) and MINI Cooper S Coupé (135 kW/184 hp), all the way up to the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé, a thoroughbred athlete producing 155 kW/211 hp.

The ultimate in go-kart feeling.
A level of chassis quality unmatched in the small car segment gives the new MINI model the handling flair you would expect from the brand.
Distinctive roof form, optimised aerodynamics, impressive storage space.
Its flat silhouette and innovative “helmet roof” lend the MINI Coupé a sporty and individual allure. In addition to the integral roof spoiler, an active rear spoiler optimises airflow at higher speeds. Helped by its extremely high-opening tailgate and large luggage area with through-loading facility, the MINI Coupé displays outstanding versatility in day-to-day driving, when transporting leisure items or sports gear, and on trips out with a lucky partner.

Dean and Dan Caten, better known as the Canadian designer duo DSQUARED², have unveiled their exclusive Life Ball MINI 2011 in Vienna. The twin brothers refashioned their MINI Cooper S to ensure that it would be armed for adventures of all kinds. Among its striking features are the front guard, rally headlamps, tinted side windows with grilles and the spare tyre on the tailgate.

But that’s not all: the vehicle’s raised chassis and deep-tread all-terrain tyres instantly evoke a sense of adventure. When it came to the interior, our two designers similarly scrutinised every detail. If road signs are unclear, there’s a compass to help you head in the right direction, while floormats made of structured aluminium sheeting protect the inside from dirt. The trademarkDSQUARED² maple leaf on the leather head restraints and the side doors rounds off the cabin of this robust MINI with a stylish flour. Dean and Dan are delighted with the result: “Our MINI ‘Red Mudder’ is 100 per cent DSQUARED².” Tonight this one-off will be gliding along the red carpet at the legendary Life Ball.

This year sees carmaker MINI supporting Europe’s biggest AIDS charity event for the 11th time. Each year a one-off MINI is created for the Life Ball, the proceeds of which support projects combating HIV/AIDS. Since 2001 more than half a million euros has been generated by these specially styled Life Ball MINI models on behalf of Aids Life. Gery Keszler, the founder and organiser of the Life Ball, is impressed by this longstanding collaboration: “MINI has been a partner of the Life Ball for 11 years and each year it demonstrates anew its creativity, enthusiasm and passion for this good cause. This year’s Life Ball MINI designed by DSQUARED² provides further persuasive evidence of this.” In previous years, designers such as Agent Provocateur, Donatella Versace, Diesel, Missoni and Gianfranco Ferré obliged with their own designs for a Life Ball MINI.

MINI is marking an important milestone in its history by once again presenting a fascinating new vehicle concept for the MINI family – the MINI Paceman Concept.

Exactly 10 years ago, visitors to the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit witnessed the relaunch of the MINI brand in North America, which signalled the beginning of an unparalleled success story. And now the brand is also preparing to celebrate this landmark anniversary at the NAIAS – taking place from 10-23 January 2011 – with the world premiere of the MINI Paceman Concept. This spectacular study vehicle establishes a totally new category of car with its potential for providing even more driving fun and an even greater range of usage. The MINI Paceman Concept could become another building block in the ongoing development of the brand and its product portfolio.

The MINI Paceman Concept takes the fundamental strengths of MINI – its uniqueness, go-kart handling, agility, dynamic capability and individual design – and gives them a fresh twist with the help of cutting-edge technology and an innovative body concept. It combines a sporty, masculine appearance, versatility and coupe looks with the dimensions of the four-door MINI Countryman. And it brings together the classical MINI concept, the defining features of the MINI Countryman and the style of a coupe to harmonious effect. The result is a MINI with visual “muscle car” design cues, which displays its dynamic capability from every angle and showcases it impressively both when viewed from the side and in the design of the rear.

The MINI Paceman Concept, whose crossover design makes it the first Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) in the small car segment, blends lifestyle elements with premium quality. It is the ideal car for young, modern, extrovert urbanites who love the hallmark MINI go-kart feeling, enjoy stand-out individuality, place great importance on the personality of a brand and buy into its character and ethos. They are confident types, who live according to their own style and express their distinctive individuality in a MINI, who use the big-city mobility the MINI provides to embark on voyages of discovery through the urban jungle, and who experience driving fun in its most concentrated form thanks to the excellent ride comfort of the MINI both in everyday driving and over long journeys.

The masculine design language of the MINI Paceman Concept spotlights both the stand-alone identity of the concept and its membership of the MINI family. The four-seater study, whose two large doors and a wide-opening tailgate mark it out unmistakably as a MINI, imbues the sporty, cutting-edge Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) category with undeniable appeal. The platform of the MINI Countryman, with its hallmark MINI proportions, increased ground clearance and raised seating position, defines the study’s compact dimensions.

Exterior:

The MINI Paceman Concept retains the familiar MINI family front end, but adds its own distinctive flavour. The large headlights with chrome surrounds extend far into the front wings and, together with the strikingly contoured bonnet, emphasise the imposing front end. The MINI Paceman Concept largely replicates the front grille design of the MINI Cooper S Countryman. However, additional intakes in the lower section of the front bumper ensure improved brake ventilation and combine with the study’s deep-set foglamps to sharpen its sporting edge. The MINI Paceman Concept’s fresh interpretation of the side scuttle at the transition from front wing to door houses both the side direction indicator and an air outlet. The side scuttle has a broad, sturdy-looking design and leads the eye from the A-pillar down towards the front wheel, making it an unmistakable, sporty, wheel-accentuating feature.

Large 19-inch wheels designed exclusively for the study car and dark wheel arch borders with side skirts highlighted in the same colour team up with the familiar MINI shoulder line rising up slightly towards the rear to underline the car’s sporty and powerful appearance. The MINI Paceman Concept shows off its roof contours particularly effectively. The flat roofline runs horizontally from front to rear, where it flows into a wide, transparent-looking C-pillar. The windows appear to wrap around the car like a band of glass, with the “helmet roof” – in a strikingly contrasting colour – suspended on top. The coupe-specific windows taper as they extend to the rear, and combine with the slightly rising waistline to create a prominently dynamic wedge shape when viewed from the side. The classic MINI three-level split of roof, greenhouse and body is again clearly recognisable in this study vehicle.

“In contrast to the more vertical design of the MINI Countryman, we’ve given the MINI Paceman Concept a horizontal emphasis and accentuated the width of the car rather more,” explains Marcus Syring, Head of MINI Exterior Design, to underline the powerful appearance of the study. The new interpretation of the traditional coupe values (the word “coupe” comes from the French “couper” meaning “to cut off”) produces a new homogeneous coupe tail which retains the unique MINI charm. Powerful proportions and the muscular design of the vehicle flanks, with their broad rear wings, reinforce its unconventional, athletic impression.

The newly interpreted rear lights are positioned at the outer edges of the rear and underline the dominance of horizontal lines, which run parallel to one another and emphasise the wide track of the rear axle. As with the MINI Cooper S Countryman, the rear apron of the MINI Paceman Concept has a diffuser design. The airflow is channelled between the twin-tailpipe exhaust on the underbody section, further optimising the car’s aerodynamic properties. Even the licence plate recess echoes the form of the air intake in the front bumper, forging a stylistic link between the front and rear of the car.

The four-seater car measures 4,110 millimetres in length, 1,789 millimetres in width and 1,541 millimetres in height. In telltale family style, the

MINI Paceman Concept has extremely short overhangs, which lend particular emphasis to the car’s athletic stature.

Interior:

The interior of the MINI Paceman Concept deliberately draws from the MINI design language, yet also comes across as refreshingly new. Behind the study’s masculine exterior lies an elegant yet sporty core imbued with a premium sense of quality. The instrument panel of the MINI study is defined by its distinctive, concave forms and the sporty but functional impression it creates. Particularly large side air vents underline the character of the interior, which is defined by cutting-edge functionality. The central air vents, Centre Speedo and gearshift lever are given broad surrounds in a contrasting colour.

The slim centre console, which maximises legroom for the driver and front passenger, melts between the seats into the Centre Rail familiar from the MINI Countryman, creating a visual and functional link between the front and rear seats. This unique and innovative U-profile rail system runs through the middle of the passenger compartment back as far as the rear seat backrests. Light shades of leather pervade the interior of the MINI Paceman Concept and lend it an expressive, luxurious allure. The new interpretation of the brand’s familiar elliptical door and side trim extends along the length of the cabin, taking in the B-pillar and emphasising the length of the interior. At the same time, the communicative and communal character of MINI cars is clearly highlighted. Embedded in the elliptical main element are the shaped armrests with large stowage compartments, ergonomically designed door pulls and the speakers for the sound system. Behind the sports seats are two comfortable individual seats, whose backrests merge boldly into side sections to create fully contoured supports. The “lounge” character that this creates underlines the individual, unconventional appearance of the study car and turns every journey into an experience for the rear passengers, as well as those in the front.

Drive system:

MINI Paceman Concept has been designed to allow the most powerful drive unit currently available for a MINI to be fitted under the bonnet. The MINI John Cooper Works 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine gives the MINI Paceman Concept the means to achieve top-class levels of sports performance. The four-cylinder unit develops 155 kW/211 hp and generates maximum torque of 260 Nm (192 lb-ft), which can be increased to as much as 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) in brief bursts thanks to the Overboost function.

Its MINI Countryman roots give the MINI concept study an ideal platform for the optionally available MINI ALL4 permanent all-wheel-drive system. This features an electromagnetic centre differential positioned directly on the final drive which varies the distribution of power seamlessly between the front and rear axles. In normal driving conditions up to 50 per cent of the drive is sent to the rear wheels, in extreme situations as much as 100 per cent. Harnessing the power of the brawny four-cylinder engines, in all-wheel-drive form the
MINI Paceman Concept would offer an extra dose of driving fun through a traction-led, sporty expression of the agile handling for which MINI is famed.

Chassis:

MINI Paceman Concept to turn the potential of the extremely powerful engines – safely and with impressive poise – into inspiring agility. Precise, sporty handling and excellent ride comfort set the MINI Paceman Concept apart. That is down not least to the go-kart feeling typical of the brand. The front axle features MacPherson spring struts with lower track control arms, while Electric Power Steering with speed-sensitive power assistance plays a major role in giving the SAC the agility customers expect of the brand. The multi-link rear axle was developed on the back of BMW Group chassis expertise and is designed for use in both the front-wheel-drive and the ALL4 all-wheel-drive versions of the car.

The company commenced development of the car in 2009, and a concept of the MINI WRC will be displayed in Paris. “The Paris Motor Show is the perfect stage, on which to launch our MINI WRC,” says Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing. “The response to our announcement that MINI will return to the world of rallying next year was very positive. The FIA World Rally Championship is the pinnacle of rallying, making it the ideal platform for demonstrating the competitive spirit of our brand. The development of the car is running on schedule, and the preparations for the world championship are in full swing. The MINI Countryman production model provided the ideal basis for our new world championship challenger.”

The 2011 World Rally Championship will see the new MINI WRC contesting in six of 13 scheduled rounds, with MINI competing in the full 2012 season. In addition, Prodrive plans to make available customer versions to independent teams for use in the championship.

Rallying is hardly unchartered territory for MINI. In the past this popular motor sporting genre decisively shaped the image of the brand. The MINI Cooper S became a true legend through its numerous victories on Rally Monte Carlo. The European Rally Championship, too, saw MINI notch up serial successes. “MINI can look back on a successful tradition in rallying,” says Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht, Senior Vice President Brand Management MINI. “The interest in motorsport among the present generation of MINI customers is massive. The WRC provides an excellent communications platform for the MINI Countryman, upon which the MINI WRC is based.”

Prodrive, an experienced motorsport operation, was chosen as the partner in the quest to continue MINI’s success story. The company, founded by David Richards, is viewed as one of the most respected and successful in rallying. “This project is a truly passionate opportunity,” believes Richards. “MINI is a cult brand which left a lasting impression during its previous motorsport campaigns. We are both extremely happy and proud to be on board as a partner when MINI returns to rallying. We aim to use 2011 as a preparatory year, amassing experience in order to ensure we are fully competitive from the start of the following season. But let’s not underestimate the task ahead of us nor the stiff competition we will face on the way, however our target is firmly set on winning the World Championship title again with MINI.”

“Countryman takes the MINI story to a new level in the brand’s 51 year heritage” said Jochen Goller, Director of MINI UK. “With extra space, ALL4 and four doors we believe the MINI Countryman will appeal to a completely new audience and with prices starting at £16,000 with a very high standard specification, I think we are on to a winner” he said. “The fact that Countryman is already sold out for this year indicates that MINI showrooms are going to be popular this autumn” Goller observed.

The market for Countryman

The demand for crossover vehicles has grown substantially in recent years: drivers want the best of both worlds with normal saloon-like driving responses as well as the added versatility of soft off-road ability and the interior flexibility to cope with all the hobbies, shopping trips and activities that are such a huge part of busy modern family life.

As a result, MINI Countryman arrives in a growing segment that presents an opportunity to attract buyers from a wide range of competitive cars. Not only will they find the flexibility their lifestyle demands but they will also discover the world of MINI, a world where practicality and versatility does not bring limitations on the fun that can be derived from driving.

“The Countryman models still pack in the driving thrills that put a grin on your face the way all MINIs do” said Lee Connolly, Product and Planning Manager at MINI UK. “But the Countryman also brings new levels of space and versatility to the range that will attract not only existing MINI owners but also new customers. We expect that the extra space will mean that around 80 per cent of Countryman sales will come from customers completely new to the MINI brand. Already we see the MINI Countryman being the benchmark in terms of residual values and lease company whole life costs. ”

Typically MINI yet topically different

One could not mistake the new Countryman for anything other than a MINI yet it is distinctly different to any that has gone before. It is 374mm longer than a MINI Hatch (at 4097mm), 106 mm wider (at 1,789 mm) and 154mm taller (at 1561mm). Countryman offers 190 litres more luggage capacity than a MINI Hatch with the seats up (a total of 350 litres) and 1,170 litres with the rear seats folded flat. For the first time ever a MINI has four wide-opening doors, passenger capacity for five adults and a flexible, activity-orientated interior packed with innovations. All UK models will be built as five seat cars, although customers can specify the four seat option at no extra cost.

Featuring that typical ‘wheel at each corner’ stance with short overhangs, the Countryman not only has larger dimensions than its cousins but also a higher ride height. This provides the commanding driving position preferred by many drivers with a 10mm higher ground clearance for soft off-road driving.

Many design characteristics are familiar such as the high window line surrounding the glasshouse while others are new interpretations of iconic features. For example, the roofline with roof rails, the reinterpretation of the hexagonal radiator grille on the Cooper S models, and the prominent headlight units integrated into the bonnet.

The front of the Countryman is more upright projecting a confident ‘face’ which also offers improved pedestrian safety. The wheel arches are more flared highlighting the robust nature of the Countryman as a true crossover and its soft off-road ability while the design of the wide-opening tailgate offers easy access to the large boot space.

Practical, flexible and fun interior

Inside the MINI Countryman is all about comfort, practicality and innovative style. The higher seating position offers better visibility for the driver and passengers, a feature particularly appreciated by children. From the four wide-opening doors to the high-opening rear hatch, Countryman provides easy and comfortable access and it’s a dream to load. The boot space of 350 litres is more than double that of the Hatch and 90 litres more than Clubman offers. With the rear seats folded flat the interior provides no less than 1,170 litres of load space. Flexibility is not compromised but celebrated in the new Countryman range.

The multi-function rear seats are arranged with a 60:40 split base for the three rear seat passengers and both rear seat squabs are also individually adjustable, sliding back or forth by 130mm to make the best use of space. The backrests, by contrast, are arranged in a 40:20:40 split that provides absolute flexibility with all three seatbacks capable of folding flat in any combination.

The interior is dominated by iconic MINI design characteristics such as comfortable yet grippy optional sports seats, the trademark central speedometer and neat, funky switch packs. New elements of MINI design language are introduced with the elliptical interior door trims that continue from the front to the rear door and back. Also new is the MINI Centre Rail system. When ordered as a four seat configuration, In place of the conventional centre console the U-shaped Centre Rail runs from front to rear down the centreline of the Countryman and opens up new, individual options for integrating all kinds of storage boxes, cup holders, power chargers, music players, mobile phones and other accessories such as a sunglasses case. A user-friendly clip-in attachment system allows the MINI Centre Rail to be divided up as desired and each item can slide easily backwards or forwards for the convenience of all occupants. When ordered with the rear bench seat, as is standard in the UK, the Centre Rail stops between the driver and passenger seats.

Inspirational engines – powerful responses and supreme economy in equal measure

At launch the Countryman range will include three petrol – MINI One, Cooper and Cooper S – and two diesel models – MINI One D and Cooper D – as well as two ALL4 all wheel drive models, the Cooper D ALL4 and Cooper S ALL4. Each model is equipped with an entirely new generation of power units. The petrol engines are the new 1.6 litre four cylinder power plants already announced for the Hatch, Convertible and Clubman models in spring 2010 and feature the BMW Group’s considerable expertise in marrying free-revving, refined and efficient driving characteristics.

The petrol engines all feature Variable Valve Timing (VVT), similar to the BMW Valvetronic system, and produces more torque low down and aids response and efficiency. The Cooper S model also benefits from a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection that gives blistering performance with modest fuel economy and low CO² emissions.

The diesel models are powered by an all-new BMW 1.6 litre four cylinder, the N47 turbocharged unit that employs all the BMW Group’s proven prowess with compression ignition engines. The lightweight aluminium engines use common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Both are fitted with a diesel particulate filter and an oxidation catalytic converter. These state of the art diesel power units set the highest standards, not only for performance and response but also for fuel economy and low emissions. The Cooper D Countryman will be available with an automatic transmission in March 2011.

All MINI Countryman models drive through a six speed manual gearbox. A six speed automatic transmission is available as an option for the petrol-engined cars.

All Countryman engines meet EU5 emissions standards. The key performance data are listed below.

Maximum MINIMALISM

MINIMALISM is the MINI name for energy-efficient technologies that not only save money for customers through lower running costs, but also add to the driving pleasure. The overall efficiency of the engines, which in diesel form emit a mere 115 grams of CO², is peerless but the breadth of smart technologies employed in the new range demonstrates that MINI lies at the cutting edge of modernity and intelligent energy management.

For example, Brake Energy Regeneration is standard on all Countryman models. Rather than waste the energy dissipated when the brakes are applied the energy is recycled and used to charge the battery. This enables the alternator to disengage thereby saving engine’s power for driving the front wheels. Overall the system saves fuel and lowers emissions. At the same time the intelligent energy management system constantly manages battery charge and matches regeneration phases with the new Absorbent Glass Mat battery.

Other examples include the Auto Start/Stop function on manual cars that stops the engine whenever the car stops, the clutch is disengaged and the gear lever is moved into neutral: at traffic lights for instance . The engine starts again immediately the clutch is engaged again. When one considers the nature of start/stop driving on Britain’s roads it is easy to appreciate the fuel saving this system can achieve.

The standard Shift Point Display also helps the driver of the manual gearbox MINI Countryman to perfect his or her driving style to maximise fuel economy. The engine electronics maintain a constant vigil on engine speed, driving conditions and accelerator position to calculate the best gear for economical driving. The recommended gear is displayed to the driver.

Another MINIMALISM feature is Electric Power Steering that only uses power assistance when it is needed. Therefore there is no unnecessary energy use.

Off the beaten track with ALL4

For the very first time in MINI’s 51 year history two models in the new Countryman range will offer four-wheel drive. The MINI Cooper D and Cooper S ALL4 models will be available from day one while a MINI Cooper ALL4 version will follow in 2012. Employing the BMW Group’s expertise and considerable success with Sports Activity Vehicles and xDrive, MINI will now enter a new chapter with Countryman.

No one needs four-wheel drive to be active all the time so MINI has a typically smart and fuel efficient answer for this conundrum. The Countryman ALL4 is a front wheel drive car in most normal circumstances, but when any slip is detected on the front wheels, or if the car is being driven enthusiastically, an electro-magnetic clutch, located on the rear axle, engages drive to the rear wheels to improve traction. To enable this imperceptible change of the driven wheels a propeller shaft from the front axle is driven constantly and is ready to direct drive forces from the front axle to the rear immediately. The amount of power fed to the rear wheels is infinitely variable between one and 100 per cent, depending upon the driving conditions.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) allows controlled slip through the driven wheels to aid moving off on loose sand or deep snow. DTC is standard feature on the two ALL4 models and the front-wheel drive MINI Cooper S Countryman, and is also available as an option for the other models. When the stability system is deactivated (in DSC Off mode) an electronic locking function for the front axle differential comes into play. In tight corners it brakes a spinning wheel as required to reduce slip and enhance handling. Known as Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC), this system enhances the car’s traction without adversely affecting its steering properties.

“Countryman ALL4 is a soft off-roader for use in everyday situations like driving in snowy conditions, parking in a field for a sporting event or driving on the beach” explained Lee Connolly, MINI UK Product Manager. “It works like a dream and brings new found flexibility to the MINI driving experience” he claimed.

The ALL4 models cost a modest £1,065 for the Cooper D and £1,220 for the Cooper S above the standard front wheel drive Countryman models and the penalty in terms of fuel consumption and CO² emissions is smaller than one might expect, the MINI Cooper D Countryman ALL4 emits 129g/km making it the cleanest 4×4 in it’s class.

Chassis – typical go kart handling

The MINI Countryman benefits from new chassis technology that affords it the best handling characteristics in its crossover segment and enables all models to exploit their performance with agility, comfortable ride quality and absolute safety.

The front suspension uses MacPherson struts and forged track control arms that, together with the multi-link rear suspension, provide safe and agile handling responses. The Cooper S Countryman has sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 10mm. Sports suspension can be specified as an option on all other Countryman models.

The other key elements of the Countryman chassis include powerful ventilated disc brakes (294mm front [Cooper S 307mm], 280mm rear), precise Electric Power Steering that delivers responsive driver feedback and speed-related assistance as well as a host of electronic chassis aids that promote both safety and agility on the road. These includeDSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which comprises ABS anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Brake Assist and Hill Assist.

The Countryman is equipped with 16 inch wheels on One and Cooper (alloy wheels on the Cooper), with 17 inch alloys on Cooper S. Options of 18 and 19 inch wheels in various styles are available.

High standard specification

The MINI Countryman range offers a sparkling array of standard equipment including:

Roof rails that facilitate various attachments like roof boxes or roof racks

Thatcham Category 1 alarm system,

Air conditioning,

Heated door mirrors and washer jets,

RearParkDistance Control

MINI Centre Rail system.

Multi-function rear seats – the five seat fitment being standard in the UK, although the four seat option will be at no cost.

Dynamic Stability Control (DTC for ALL4 models)

Electric power steering with Servotronic speed-related assistance

Six airbags

ISOFIX child safety seat mountings

Tyrepuncture warning system

Standard Central Bass Hi Fi system with six speakers

DAB digital radio with Radio Boost.

Bluetooth telephone preparation

USB connection.

Passenger Airbag deactivation

Preparation for a bicycle rack (including electrics)

Non run-flat tyres

All MINI Countryman models come with standard preparation for a bike rack. The multi-function rack itself is a bespoke item that not only secures bikes or surfboards being carried but also allows the rear hatch to be opened without removing the rack and its contents.

The Countryman range is available in 11 exterior colours and 8 interior trims.

MINI is making a comeback on the international rally circuit. From 2011, the brand will compete at selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. This involvement is planned for several years.

The car charged with this task is the MINI Countryman WRC, which is being developed by Prodrive, in close cooperation with MINI, and is based on the production model. The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport.

The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies. The result is a significant 25 per cent reduction in overall costs. The first test drive for the MINI Countryman WRC, which will also be available to customer teams, is planned for autumn 2010.

This decision sees MINI continue its success story in the world of rallying. In the 1960s, the MINI Cooper S caused a sensation with victories at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. The company also tasted success on many occasions in the European Rally Championship. Having already demonstrated the sporty character of its models in many countries in the MINI CHALLENGE, the brand is now taking its presence in motorsport to a new level with the commitment to the WRC.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, says: “I am delighted MINI will be represented on one of the most popular stages in international motorsport. The success enjoyed on the rally circuit has made a vital contribution to the image of the brand. MINI customers have always shown great interest in motorsport. I am convinced we will add a few more chapters to our success story in rallying. The MINI Countryman provides an excellent basis, from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship. In Prodrive, we have a strong and experienced partner. We will work hard together over the coming months to ensure we get the project on track right from the word go.”

“This is a very exciting new motorsport programme,” said Prodrive Chairman, David Richards. “During the 1960s MINI captured the imagination of the world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. I believe our new MINI will become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world. We already have a significant number of confirmed customer orders for the new MINI rally car with the first deliveries scheduled for the start of the 2011 season.”

MINI UK has announced that from this August all MINI models will bear fresh design features both inside and out. Also, two brand new diesel engines that achieve CO2 emissions of 99 grams/km and the first MINI Convertible powered by a diesel engine will also make their debuts at the same time. This range makeover comes hot on the heels of the new, more economical petrol engines announced in March and the forthcoming MINI Countryman. Like the Countryman all these changes that refresh MINI will be available in MINI showrooms during September 2010. The pace of MINI change never slackens.

“The pace at which MINI is bringing new technology to the market is breathtaking” said Jochen Goller, Director of MINI UK. “The current generation of MINI Hatch, Clubman and Convertible are all quite recent cars and were state of the art when they were launched. With the refreshment of MINI design and the extraordinarily economical new diesel engines MINI has moved the game forward even further.”

“With the introduction in August of the Model refresh and MINI’s strong MINIMALISM strategy it now positions the MINI Brand having 26 core models (including Countryman), 23 of which are underneath 160 g/km CO2, 14 under 130 g/km and 8 under the 120 g/km threshold, in addition to the MINI Hatch One D and Cooper D now having 99 g/km and being congestion charge exempt. We are extremely confident that MINI can continue to hold its market leading position in an ever increasing competitive sector”, said Lee Connolly Product and Planning Manager, MINI UK.

New diesel engines bring MINI record low fuel consumption and 99 grams of CO2

Following the March introduction of new, more efficient petrol engines for the MINI range, two all new diesel engines make their debut in the revised and refreshed range. The 1.6 litre, four cylinder engines are based on the accumulated development prowess of diesel power units by the BMW Group. Accordingly they share the efficient bore/stroke ratio of BMW’s two litre units, all aluminium construction for light weight, common rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The result is a state of the art diesel engine that marries strong power delivery, high torque from low down the rev range that delivers pulling power whenever it is called for, supreme economy and low emissions and engine acoustics that set new standards in the premium compact car segment.

The results are nothing short of amazing. Both the MINI One D and MINI Cooper D achieve the same low fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. These values are an absolute record for any series production car produced by the BMW Group. However, such is the efficiency of both engines that the driving qualities deliver MINI brio in spades. The Cooper D Hatch accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 9.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 123mph. The huge torque of 270 Nm is available from 1,750 rpm ensuring that it is always ready to harness the engine’s power. The less powerful MINI One D Hatch (90hp as compared to the Cooper D’s 112) has a torque value of 215Nm available from the same low engine rev range but still reaches 62mph in 11.4 seconds and hits a top speed of 115 mph.

The new diesel-powered MINIs are MINIMALISM personified. In addition to the high efficiency of the new diesel engine, they employ fuel-saving and emission-lowering technology including Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start-Stop, Gearshift Indicator, Electromechanical Power Steering and demand-controlled auxiliary units such as the alternator. All of these technologies and the standard six-speed manual gearbox play a role as it ekes the most out of every drop of fuel while also minimising the tailpipe emissions.

In the same vein a diesel particulate filter and an oxidation catalyst is standard fitment on all the new MINI diesel models. They share the same housing and operate maintenance-free for life. As with all MINI models they all comply with the EU5 emission standard.

New models: MINI Convertible with diesel power for the first time

For the first time in MINI history a diesel engine will appear under the bonnet of an open MINI when the MINI Cooper D Convertible joins the range in August. Using the same 112hp engine as the Hatch, the Convertible accelerates to 62mph in just 10.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 121mph. Despite this performance potential, the MINI Cooper D Convertible sips diesel fuel at a parsimonious 70 mpg and emits just 105g/km of CO², the lowest emitting and most economical ‘full’ convertible vehicle on the UK market today.

Like the Convertible models, the fresh visual cues apply to the Clubman models as well. Similar record efficiency values apply to the diesel-engined Clubman range that includes the all new MINI One D Clubman for the first time. Both display comparable performance to the Hatch as well as similar miserly fuel consumption and low emissions. The Clubman is also equipped with a new retractable cargo cover in the luggage compartment.

As demand for genuine Classic Mini parts grows, XPart is introducing a range of new and improved front and rear bumpers as well as bonnet bars for the much-loved British icon. The bonnet bars will be made from stainless steel using MG Rover original tooling, while the stainless steel bumpers will be manufactured using modern production methods in order to produce smoother ends and a cosmetically enhanced finish.

“Classic Mini maintenance and restoration is fundamental to keeping the cars in good condition as they continue to increase in value,” comments Barry Smith, UK Sales Manager, XPart. “Our new front and rear bumpers and bonnet bars are being manufactured to the highest standards and offer a superior quality replacement for original equipment that may now be corroded and in need of replacing.

Fitting non-genuine bumpers can cause problems for owners, particularly in terms of their unfinished razor-like ends. They can also be difficult to fit, resulting in hours of additional labour. Non-genuine rear bumpers can often be the wrong width, and when fitted can foul the back panel and rear lights. Non-genuine front bumpers also pose difficulties as the holes are often in the wrong place and need to be filed out in order for them to locate properly.”

With many original Minis now cherished and well maintained collectors’ items, finding a reliable supply of vital service and wear parts can be a source of concern for the UK’s 35,000 Classic Mini owners. XPart supplies a full range of popular service parts via its nationwide parts wholesaler and AutoService centre network, together with a comprehensive range of body and trim parts.

“With over 5,000 Classic Mini parts in our electronic parts catalogue, we are able to provide solid parts support to owners, helping them to keep their cars running for longer,” continues Smith.

XPart will be represented at May’s International Mini Meeting in Bavaria by South Lakeland Mini Centre, a Classic Mini specialist and XPart AutoService centre. With over 20 years’ experience of servicing and repairing Minis, South Lakeland has particular expertise in restoration and engine rebuilds. The team will be on hand to answer any technical queries or parts enquiries and will be able to offer show discounts.

The XPart parts wholesaler network includes 110 members, spread evenly throughout the country. The company’s AutoService centre network encompasses over 250 garages, including former MG Rover dealers, MG Motor dealers and a growing number of high quality independent garages. While MG Rover specialisation remains a core element of the XPart AutoService centre network, each garage has access to XPart’s full catalogue of Classic Mini parts.

The new parts will be priced as follows: Mini bumper (DPB10166SLP) – £42.46, and Mini top bar (ALA6559MMM) – £16.96. For further information on XPart’s AutoService centre network, or to locate your nearest parts wholesaler, please visit www.xpart.com

Offering even more space than before, featuring an elevated seating position and additional ground clearance as
well as ALL4 all-wheel drive, the MINI Countryman introduces brand-new opportunities to enjoy the driving pleasure so typical of the MINI brand.

In its design and driving behaviour, the new MINI Countryman is clearly recognisable at first sight as a genuine MINI. Right from the start, the car stands out through its unique look – it is powerful, robust and versatile in all its features and appearance.

Various design elements and proportions typical of the brand also stand out from the very beginning, enabling the fourth model in the MINI range to bridge the gap between the classic concept of the MINI and a modern Sports Activity Vehicle.

The MINI Countryman clearly demonstrates its provenance from the very beginning through its driving qualities. Like all models within the brand, it offers the most agile handling in its segment. Highly sophisticated suspension technology and electromechanical steering both precise and efficient guarantee that characteristic go-kart feeling further enhanced to a new level through the elevated seating position and optional ALL4 all-wheel drive. Active safety of the highest calibre is guaranteed also by DSC Dynamic Stability Control naturally featured as standard.

The MINI Countryman is available from the start with a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines. The range of petrol engines extends from the 72 kW/98 hp MINI One Countryman through the 90 kW/122 hp MINI Cooper Countryman all the way to the 135 kW/184 hp MINI Cooper S Countryman boasting the most efficient power unit worldwide in its four-cylinder 1.6-litre class. The two diesel models are the 82 kW/122 hp MINI Cooper D Countryman and the 66 kW/90 hp MINI One D Countryman.

ALL4 all-wheel drive is available in both the MINI Cooper S Countryman and the MINI Cooper D Countryman. And last but not least in this context, all models naturally comply with the EU5 emission standard in Europe and ULEV II in the USA.

One of the standard features of the MINI Countryman is the innovative Center Rail storage and fastening system. Body paintwork and interior colours created exclusively for the new model, a large range of upholstery variants, decorative trim, high-end audio and navigation systems as well as numerous features specific to the new model offer the connoisseur and aficionado a wide range
of options in configuring the MINI Countryman to his personal style in a unique manner again typical of the brand.

Designed to significantly enhance the performance of the MINI Cooper S’s 1.6-litre, twin scroll turbocharged, direct injection motor, intensive analysis of the car’s advanced MED17 engine management system by Superchips in-house technicians pinpointed a number of areas that required fine tuning.

The end result of this process is a thoroughly tested ECU remap which optimises ignition timing, fuelling and turbo boost parameters and was validated using Superchips chassis dynomometer, allied to a comprehensive road testing program.

So how much performance does a Superchips remapped Cooper S gain? Peak power increases by 20bhp at peak (up to 195bhp from a measured 175bhp,) with an extra 22bhp in the mid range, significantly boosting the day to day performance of hottest production MINI.

Pleasingly, torque leaps from a measured 256Nm (187lb.ft) to a healthy 282Nm (206lb.ft,) with well over 250Nm (183lb.ft) available from 2500rpm to 5250rpm, highlighting the improved flexibility of the Superchips upgraded MINI Cooper S.

Designed for use with regular 95 octane forecourt petrol and covered by Superchips industry leading warranty, the new Superchips performance ECU remap for the R56 MINI Cooper S is available now by visiting one of approximately 100 Superchips dealerships in the UK who will install the upgrade. As part of this process, the customer’s original file is stored for safe keeping.

Suitable for all MY2006 onwards R56 MINI Cooper S models, Superchips new performance remap is available now, priced at £445.00 including VAT @ 17.5%.

MINI models are to benefit from a wide of technical advances and personalisation options with effect from spring 2010. At the top of the list are a new range of petrol engines that offer more power and torque while reducing both emissions and fuel consumption. In addition, a new MINI One Convertible will bring the thrill of open air MINI driving to a wider audience. MINI is also raising the customisation possibilities by offering a range of unique Rainbow colour options and an extension to the MINI Graphite Special Edition model range to include Clubman models.

‘Hot on the heels of the launch of customer field trials for the electric MINI E, MINI is introducing this array of new technology and features for the new decade,’ said Jochen Goller, Director of MINI UK. ‘Once again, our dedication to continuous improvement will bring substantial benefits in both efficiency and performance to our customers. Better still, there will be no price increase when the new models go on sale in March 2010.’

New petrol engines
A new and improved version of the MINI petrol engine will be fitted to all First, One, Cooper and Cooper S models in the Hatch, Convertible and Clubman ranges. The MINI First and One models will now be fitted with a 1.6 litre engine, replacing the 1.4, and VALVETRONIC valve operation that delivers more torque and better fuel consumption. All MINI petrol-engined models will conform to European EU5 emissions standards or ULEV 11 in the USA.
VALVETRONIC variable valve timing delivers a five per cent improvement on its own while an on- demand, map-controlled oil pump achieves a further 2.5 per cent fuel saving. An improved, low friction engine vacuum pump accounts for another one per cent and a map-regulated water pump working on a pulsed cycle (rather than simply on or off) saves 1.2 per cent fuel.

Reduced friction from polished camshaft and main bearings, improved heat management and the specific features above combine to contribute more efficient use of energy by the new MINI range.
The fuel consumption improvements have been made despite the fact that the testing procedures under EU5 reduce certified gains.

MINI First
The entry level MINI, MINI First, receives a new version of the 1.6 litre four cylinder engine that produces 75 hp, the same as its predecessor. The extra capacity has been designed to produce more torque which is higher by almost 17 per cent at 140 Nm. As a result fuel consumption in the EU cycle is 52.3 mpg and CO2 emissions 127 g/km. Top speed of MINI First is 109 mph while the 0-62 mph acceleration takes 13.2 seconds.

MINI One
The new engine enables MINI One to increase both power (by three per cent to 98hp) and torque (by nine per cent to 153 Nm at 3,000 rpm). The efficiencies achieved through this new technology also deliver consumption of 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle while emissions fall to127 g/km. On the road the true spirit of MINI is revealed with top speed rising to 116 mph and zero to 62 mph acceleration taking just 10.5 seconds, a 0.4 second improvement.

The MINI One Clubman benefits from the same powertrain improvements and offers 0-62 mph in 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. EU cycle fuel consumption falls to 51.4 mpg (combined cycle) and emissions to just 129 g/km.

MINI One Convertible
Since its launch in 2009 the enduring appeal of the MINI Convertible has been proven by strong demand. So far it has only been possible to buy a Cooper, Cooper S or John Cooper Works Convertible, so the introduction of a One Convertible provides a much lower entry point for keen fresh air fans.

The MINI One Convertible shares the new 1.6 litre VALVETRONIC engine of its Hatch and Clubman cousins, and produces the same 98hp and 153 Nm of torque all for a sub-£15,000 price tag. The new model accelerates from 0-62 mph in 11.3 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 112 mph. Despite this it brings fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions to a new level in the convertible market, recording 49.6 mpg (combined cycle) and 133 g/km respectively.

The open top four-seater features a fabric roof that opens and closes electro-hydraulically at the touch of a button up to 20 mph. Designed as a Convertible from the outset, MINI Convertible offers a torsionally-stiff body that allows it to capitalise on cutting edge chassis technology to release that special MINI go-kart feeling. Naturally the MINI One Convertible has a high standard equipment list including air-conditioning and is equipped with all the sophisticated active safety features of the Cooper and S including EPS electromechanical steering, DSC stability control, four airbags and the rear rollover bar behind the rear seats that pops up automatically in the event of a rollover incident.

MINI One Convertible can, like all MINIs, be specified with a wide range of options to personalise it to an owner’s taste. These include a wide range of exterior paint colours, interior design choices, hood colours and the ‘Openometer’. This MINI Convertible-specific option records the amount of time spent with the roof down. It is, after all, the principal purpose of owning a soft-top MINI
The on-the-road price for MINI One Convertible is £14,995.

MINI Cooper S
The iconic Cooper S model also gets more ‘poke’ with less ‘smoke’. It is equipped for the first time with a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct petrol injection and fully variable valve control. The variable valve control is based on BMW’s familiar VALVETRONIC system that adjusts valve lift and opening times in direct relationship to the driver’s command on the throttle pedal.

The result is the most efficient hot hatch in its class: the 1.6 litre unit produces 9 hp more peak power at 184 hp while peak torque is 240 Nm, delivered from as low as 1,600 rpm through to 5,000 rpm. This flexibility is enhanced by an Overboost function that delivers 260 Nm for short periods when it is most needed, for example when overtaking. The Cooper S Hatch sprints from 0 to 62 mph in exactly 7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 142 mph, But it’s not just about ‘go’. It delivers improved EU cycle fuel consumption of 48.7 mpg (combined cycle) lower by 3.1 mpg, while CO2 emissions are now 13 g/km lower at 136 g/km.

The equivalent values for MINI Cooper S Clubman and Convertible are:

MINI Cooper
At the heart of the MINI range the largest-selling model, the MINI Cooper, also benefits from the new engine enhancements. A power hike to 122 hp (+3 hp) and peak torque of 160 Nm @ 4,250 rpm help the Hatch to 62 mph in 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 127 mph. Sharing all the new engine features of the Cooper S except the turbocharger, the Cooper achieves 52.3 mpg (combined cycle) and emits only 127 g/km of CO2.

More beef but it won’t cost a bean
Not only will customers feel these improvements in their pockets through lower fuel and taxation charges, they will sense them through the accelerator pedal too…but MINI will ask no price increase for the enhanced MINI models – not a sausage!

More lead in your pencil
Launched in April 2009 the MINI Hatch Graphite Special Edition model has proven to be a huge hit with MINI fans. Resplendent in its special Dark Silver metallic livery and offering unique alloy wheels, white indicator lenses, piano black interior trim, bonnet stripes and special ‘Graphite’ badging as standard equipment, this special edition stands out from the crowd. It also stands out in the used car market offering the highest residual value position of any current MINI model.
In February 2010 this hugely successful model will be joined by its larger and more practical counterpart, the MINI Clubman Graphite Special Edition model. Available on MINI One, Cooper and Cooper D variants, the MINI Clubman Graphite offers the same Dark Silver paintwork (normally only available for Cooper S models) and the same enhanced level of standard equipment as on the Hatch. The raised level of standard specification is priced at a discount of 25% versus the normal ‘single’ option costs so, as is often the case, MINI owners can have their cake and eat it.

A new level of exclusivity for MINI / Somewhere over the rainbow
From April 2010 MINI will introduce a new level of customisation and expression for those who want to take personalisation to a new level. Three new Rainbow paint options will offer a deeper dimension of reflective quality than ever before seen on a MINI. A water-based basecoat colour produces an amazing rainbow effect in bright sunlight that changes the character of the MINI completely. Available in three different colours – Sunlight Metallic, Asteroid Metallic and Nightlife Metallic – these unique paint finishes open a new chapter in MINI personalisation. Prices will be announced in March but, rest assured, it won’t cost the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Once again, MINI achieves all this by consistently expanding the model range and through the unconventional creativity of MINI design. Just a few months prior to the launch of the brand’s fourth model announced for autumn 2010, MINI is now demonstrating its potential for further enhancement of driving pleasure and diversity through another spectacular concept car: the concept of a brand-new type of vehicle proudly presented by MINI at the North American International Auto Show (16–24 January 2010) in Detroit.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept is a four-seater concept car designed consistently for maximum driving pleasure, taking up the enhanced options of the new MINI and combining these potentials with the vision of a radically open body concept.

ALL4 all-wheel drive and the variable interior give the MINI Beachcomber Concept abilities absolutely ideal for a spontaneous and active experience of freedom and leisure time. The potential offered by the car’s modern drivetrain technology and space concept is used here to the greatest possible extent to ensure a highly emotional driving experience. Hence, the MINI Beachcomber Concept consistently does without doors, a conventional roof and all other body elements which might possibly limit the intensity of the occupants’ encounter with their surrounding world. This makes the driver and up to three passengers one harmonious entity communicating directly with their surroundings – whether cruising through town, enjoying rough tracks in the mountains, or breezing along the beach.

The MINI Beachcomber Concept combines all-wheel drive with cutting-edge suspension technology, numerous body elements serving to make the car extra-strong and robust, as well as an elevated seating position. Generous spring travel and extra-large light-alloy wheels raise the entire car to a higher level. Access to the front and rear seats is nevertheless exceptionally convenient and easy thanks to the omission of doors and the entry cutouts extending all the way down to the seat bottoms, allowing the driver and passengers to get in and out in one smooth and flowing process. A pleasant and interesting side effect is that the distance the occupants feel from their surroundings is reduced to a minimum.

The driver and passengers will also enjoy the driving pleasure created by this concept in everyday traffic under regular motoring conditions – simply because the MINI Beachcomber Concept retains its unmistakable character even when adverse weather conditions require use of the soft roof or the lightweight door and roof elements fitting on easily and conveniently within a few instants. “

Today at MINI’s Oxford plant, forty electric MINI E cars were handed over to their test drivers, who are all members of the public. This marks the start of two consecutive six-month field trial periods which will evaluate the psychological, social and technical aspects of living with an electric car. The findings will be used both to inform the BMW Group engineering teams, as they create zero emissions vehicles for the future, and the wider world to help guide power providers, policy makers and component manufacturers in their decision making.

The BMW Group has played a pioneering role in the development of sustainable private transport through ever more efficient petrol and diesel power plants. This is being achieved through the comprehensive application of a wide range of technologies, collectively known as Efficient Dynamics. More than 1.6 million cars worldwide have been sold with Efficient Dynamics technology integrated into their design. The company also has a long-term commitment to the development of both hybrid and hydrogen powertrains.

“This is a historic day for MINI and for the BMW Group” said Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW Group (UK). “It is fitting that the brand with its inspiration in the oil crisis of the 1950s is again at the forefront of energy efficiency with a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

“I would like to thank our partners in the consortium – Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), Oxford Brookes University, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council” he added. “It is only through such partnerships of technical, commercial, academic and political competences that we can achieve our goal of sustainable mobility.”

The trial is a collaborative effort within a BMW Group UK-led consortium. Additional funding is provided by the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Transport (DFT) as part of a UK-wide programme involving trials of 340 ultra-low carbon vehicles from several manufacturers.

The MINI E pioneers package
To cover the research and investment costs of the project a MINI E would normally cost in the region of £550 a month to lease, however part funding from the Government’s Technology Strategy Board means that the lease cost to MINI E pioneers is just £330 per month, which includes VAT, insurance, service and maintenance. Over and above this payment, the only other costs that MINI E pioneers will incur are for the electricity they use when charging their car. A full charge at home (for a completely flat battery) costs just £1.50 when using off-peak electricity or around £4.00 when charging during peak hours. This translates to just over a penny a mile when charging off-peak.

The BMW Group UK Consortium
Following the launch of the MINI E research projects in North America and Germany, the UK trial is a collaborative effort from a BMW Group UK-led consortium.

Scottish and Southern Energy is responsible for the electrical infrastructure in the field trial area and through its supply brand Southern Electric is committed to supplying ‘green energy’ from sustainable sources to all MINI E drivers. Part of the trial involves measuring the loading on the electricity supply network, which can only be done by testing the MINI Es in a network area owned and operated by Scottish and Southern Energy.

“This pioneering trial will help us better understand the usage patterns for electric vehicles, a key issue for the energy industry over the coming years,” said Mark Mathieson, Director of Distribution for Scottish and Southern Energy. “It is clear that electric vehicles will play an important role in a lower carbon future. As a company with considerable investment in renewable energy generation, this is something we are already firmly committed to.”

Oxford Brookes University’s Sustainable Vehicle Engineering Centre will manage the collation of qualitative and quantitative research throughout the UK trial. This will include analysis of driver experiences with the MINI E, as well as reviewing the technical information provided by the data-logging units fitted to every MINI E.

The consortium is strengthened by public sector organisations from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council. Pam Alexander, SEEDA Chief Executive, said: “SEEDA is delighted to be contributing £825,000 to this exciting collaboration. We aim to drive growth in the South East through innovation which creates prosperity and high value jobs. A core aspect of our focus is to develop green technology and a sustainable transport infrastructure to win global market share in the technologies that will deliver a low carbon future.”

SEEDA, Southern and Scottish Energy, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council are trialling 20 of the MINI E trial cars in a fleet environment. This requires the establishment of an appropriate technical infrastructure in each organisation’s local area and contributes further to the consortium’s common objective of being at the forefront of sustainable transport initiatives.

MINI E specification and performance
The MINI E’s electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Nm and a power output equivalent to 204hp. Drive is delivered to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox. This unique engine and transmission arrangement powers the MINI E seamlessly to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 95 mph.

Based on the familiar MINI Hatch, MINI E is a two-seater because the space normally used by rear passengers is reserved for a lithium-ion battery. This state-of-the-art rechargeable battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and a remarkable power output. It has a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh) and transmits energy to the electric motor as a direct current at a nominal 380 volts. It comprises 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules, which are packaged into three battery elements arranged compactly inside the MINI E.

Driven by electricity: zero emissions at point of use, at minimal cost
A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Each kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles giving the MINI E a theoretical range of over 150 miles. Besides the benefit of zero-emissions driving, at point of use, the MINI E offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine.

As soon as the driver lifts his or her foot off the accelerator pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. In city traffic, some 75 per cent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy regeneration feature extends the car’s range by up to 20 per cent and contributes to a smooth driving experience.

The first classic Mini was presented to the public on 26 August 1959. Exactly fifty years on and nearly a decade into the life of new MINI, images of the stunning new MINI Coupe Concept are today released. Capturing the essence of MINI’s sporting appeal, the global press and public will see the MINI Coupe Concept in the metal for the first time when it is unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17-27 September 2009.

The MINI Coupe Concept is designed to be the most dynamic and agile MINI ever built. Strictly a two-seater, the low roof line, compact dimensions, perfect axle load distribution and lightweight construction are all trademarks of a genuine sports car.

A number of design icons feature on the MINI Coupe Concept. Large round headlights inclusive of black internal reflectors, a hexagonal radiator grille and low front spoiler mark the newcomer out as a true MINI. Unique exterior design cues include a bespoke rear spoiler, bonnet stripes extending to include the radiator grille and an entirely revised front air dam.

The muscular stance of the car is a result of carefully calculated exterior dimensions. The MINI Coupe Concept is 1,356mm high and the steep rake of the A-pillars is accentuated by the high waistline common to every MINI. Sat on attractive 18’ triple-tone finish light alloy wheels, the concept is 3,714mm in length and 1,683mm wide.

For the first time on a MINI, the weight-saving aluminium roof is an unbroken bridge shape and flows smoothly from A to C-pillars. The steep front rake stops above the heads of driver and front passenger and descends gently to the rear of the car, emphasising the wedge shape of the car and its sporty poise. The low rear end of the car ensures optimum air flow across the vehicle when in motion and in combination with the roof spoiler, minimises any aerodynamic interruption.

Inside, sports seats with strongly contoured side supports feature, as does a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with multi-function controls. Two Chronoswiss clocks to the right and left of the rev counter provide a close link to earlier concept cars by MINI, bridging the gap between the analogue age of the classic Mini and the digital age of new MINI. One acts as a stop watch and the other a standard timepiece.

A luggage capacity of 250 litres is offered and can be accessed at the rear by a tailgate which is hinged above the roof spoiler, meaning easy access to goods stowed in the rear. The bulkhead between the passenger and luggage compartments comes with a lockable opening, giving passengers access to the rear section at any time.

The MINI Coupe Concept is engineered to receive the most powerful engine in the current MINI line-up. The highly-acclaimed 211hp, 1.6-litre twin scroll turbocharged power unit found in current John Cooper Works models offers CO2 emissions of just 165g/km and fuel efficiency of 40.9mpg (combined).

MINI’s revered handling dynamics will be a highlight of the MINI Coupe Concept. Front wheel drive, powerful disc brakes on all four wheels, the front axle with McPherson spring struts and a centrally guided rear axle with aluminium longitudinal arms and anti-roll bars guarantee a safe, yet grin-inducing drive every time.

With a Crossover model in the final stages of development and Hatch, Clubman and Convertible models currently on the roads in nearly 80 countries worldwide, MINI aims to offer a varied and exciting range of small premium cars to customers in the coming years. MINIMALISM technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration, Shift Point Display and Auto Start/Stop are key reasons to buy a MINI and have helped to position MINI at the forefront of highly efficient and environmentally aware performance car production. These technologies are sure to feature on future MINI derivatives.
