Nissan has confirmed the performance statistics for Juke-R – the supercar crossover concept that combines the power and handling of the legendary GT-R with the bold design of Juke.

Created in the UK, Juke-R has been developed by Nissan and built by leading motorsports outfit RML with advice from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTC-E). Over a 22-week period two models have been created – one right-hand drive and one left-hand drive – with extensive performance testing now completing the final stage of the development project.

Juke-R’s 485bhp 3.8-litre V6 twin turbo engine propels the car from a standing start to 62mph (100kph) in just 3.7 seconds, before continuing on to a top speed of 160mph (257kph).

Testing has proved that Juke-R enjoys supercar handling from a compact crossover, thanks to use of the Nissan GT-R’s suspension and drivetrain as well as an FIA-specification roll cage and unique split rear wing. In a straight line, the GT-R’s more aerodynamic shape ensures that its top speed is higher despite the same power plant being used in each. GT-R also remains lighter than Juke-R due to the roll cage and extra chassis reinforcement that has been required to place the supercar’s components into a Juke body.

Juke-R’s physical dimensions obviously resemble Juke more than GT-R. The car is the same length (4135mm), height (1575mm) and has the same wheelbase (2530mm) as Juke, while the width has increased from 1765mm to 1910mm, with flared wheel arches surrounding 20-inch RAYS forged alloy wheels.

Inside, the driver and passenger sit in OMP race seats, but with all the controls and instruments from GT-R at their fingertips. The 7-inch touch-screen display is in the centre of the dashboard, providing access to the wealth of information about the car to which any GT-R owner has become accustomed.

During the 22 week project, Nissan ‘opened the doors’ on the creation of Juke-R, documenting the development story from day 1 and releasing a series of 10 videos on You Tube and via the Nissan Juke Facebook page – a series which has achieved over 2.2 million views in just 10 weeks. Today marks the release of the wrap-up video bringing together the full development story, showing the car in all its dynamic glory. The next installments are scheduled for January when the Nissan Juke-R hits the road.

Platinum is a special kind of metal, offering both beauty and toughness. It’s the inspiration behind a new special version of Nissan’s X-TRAIL 4×4.

As the name suggests, the new Platinum edition X-TRAIL is a real luxury item, with additional equipment not seen on any of the other models in the range and a touch more glamour too.

The front and rear of the vehicle gets extra protection and style with the fitment of additional protection plates located below the bumpers. The side is treated to chrome side steps and chrome door protection mouldings.

On the inside the Platinum features leather upholstery and electrically-adjustable, heated front seats. A sophisticated new touch screen communication unit features satellite navigation, iPod connectivity and Bluetooth. To help protect your investment there’s also a reversing camera, with the image transmitted onto a small screen incorporated into the rear view mirror.

Powering the Platinum is the X-TRAIL’s advanced 2.0dCi diesel engine with a choice of either manual or automatic transmissions. The manual produces a healthy 173PS and yet can return an average of 44.1mpg.

But unlike its precious inspiration, the X-TRAIL Platinum is not expensive. In fact it costs less than the Tekna version on which it’s based, starting at £29,180 for the manual and £30,560 for the automatic.

Orders are now being taken now, but Platinum is a real rarity, with just 200 being produced.

A prototype zero-emission all-electric delivery vehicle is ready to start extensive real-world testing on the streets of London. FedEx Express and Nissan are collaborating over a two month period to evaluate how the NV200 electric vehicle (EV) prototype copes with the rigours of daily duties in the capital.

The Nissan NV200 EV prototype uses the same EV powertrain and battery originally developed for the multi-award winning Nissan LEAF – the world’s first 100 per cent electric mass-market family car: 2011 European Car of the Year, 2011 World Car of the Year, and Car of the Year Japan 2011-2012. To date Nissan already sold more than 20,000 Nissan LEAFs, making it the best-selling all-electric car across the globe.

Beth Galetti, vice president of Planning and Engineering, FedEx Express EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent & Africa) said, “FedEx is proud to collaborate with Nissan on this initiative. Our cross-sector approach to reduce dependence on petroleum, reduce carbon impact and eliminate tailpipe emissions remains unwavering. At FedEx, we seek to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways and we will continue to work closely with Nissan to change what is possible.”

“Zero-emission vehicles like Nissan LEAF are already playing an increasingly significant environmental role in our towns and cities. The Nissan NV200 EV prototype delivery vehicle will not only improve the quality of urban life, but thanks to best in class running costs has great potential to ease the economic burdens placed on companies,” said Nissan Corporate Vice President Hideto Murakami, responsible for the Global LCV Business Unit, “FedEx Express feedback from the evaluation process will help us tailor a future battery-powered light commercial Nissan vehicle that meets customer needs.”

“Collaboration is part of our global vehicle strategy,” explained Dennis Beal, Vice President of Global Vehicles for FedEx Express. “Through collaboration we can exponentially improve and expedite what is possible. We value the opportunity Nissan has given us to provide experienced feedback and contribute to development of the best Nissan NV200 possible.”

FedEx Express currently operates 43 all-electric vehicles in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Memphis- all of which are ideal dense urban centres. With zero emissions, no tailpipe, and energy-recycling regenerative braking, the Nissan NV200 EV prototype is particularly well-suited for congested city streets where poor air quality is causing increased concern and the start and stop of city traffic reduces the wasteful loss of energy and thus increases the efficiency of the vehicle’s driveline. Battery charging options include a complete recharge overnight or up to 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes using a Quick Charger.

Nissan is aiming to become the global leader in zero emissions and sees the application of its advanced zero emission technology to the LCV and business-to-business markets as an important next step in the development of sustainable mobility for all.

Additional trials are anticipated for 2012 mirroring similar trials held in 2011, where the NV200 EV prototype was used by the Japan Post Service on delivery and collection duties in Japan.

Nissan have announced the launch of the 2012 model year Nissan GT-R. The new model goes on sale 24 November in Japan and arrives in European showrooms from early 2012.

At a glance

More power (550PS), improved economy and lower emissions

Unique asymmetric suspension settings on RHD cars

Rear view camera now standard

New track focused version to come to the UK

Significant improvements to the engine, chassis and transmission which accentuates the pure performance potential of the GT-R are the key changes to Nissan’s flagship model for the 2012 model year. This latest version, which goes on sale from early December for the UK with deliveries expected in early 2012, is the most efficient yet. It offers even greater performance but this is allied to improved economy and lower emissions to provide further excitement to drivers and passengers.

As well as more power, the 2012 MY GT-R has a newly developed asymmetric suspension which compensates for greater weight on the driver’s side in RHD models, enhanced transmission ‘feel’ and a stronger body for extra rigidity and ever better handling.

2012MY Nissan GT-R Overview

1. Mechanical Features

Engine

By improving the GT-R’s engine efficiency, its fuel economy has been improved to 24mpg (from 23.5mpg), while engineoutput rises significantly to 550PS (+20PS) at 6,400rpm with maximum torque of 632Nm (+20Nm) from 3,200 to 5,800 rpm.

Engine response and torque at mid and low-speeds, and power at high revolutions, has been significantly improved, mainly due to:

Improved intake efficiency

Better air flow resistance, which has been reduced by the addition of an intake manifold fitted to the head of each unit and the use of resin in the enlarged air intake duct for the intercooler.

Improved exhaust emissions efficiency and enhanced control.

Reduced air flow resistance thanks to a more compact under floor catalyser which improves emissions efficiency and reduces weight.

Improved exhaust valve cooling performance by the adoption of a newly-designed metallic sodium-filled valve. At the same time, valve control timing, the air mixture ratio and ignition timing have been improved.

Transmission

Shift feels and quietness has been refined thanks to a strengthened design of the shift fork arm and a firmer fixing bearing for the flywheel housing. A special differential oil R35 COMPETITION Type 2189E (75W140), which was developed for competition is now used in every version of GT-R.

Body

As well as greater power and torque, the reinforcing of certain areas around the rear part of the engine compartment and dash panel deliver more responsive handling while a greater sense of the vehicle’s grip on the road is transmitted to the driver.

At the same time, more precise production methods, accompanied by advancements made in the vehicle body, have improved the inter-vehicle detection capability. This was achieved by changes in the positioning of the sensor and more rigid, highly-damped vehicle body, and by adding a more accurate acceleration sensor in areas with higher sensitivity in the vibration testing of each vehicle body.

Suspension and brakes

Accounting for the added weight of the driver in a right-hand drive vehicle coupled to the fact that the propeller shaft for front wheels is located on the right side of the vehicle; the GT-R’s suspension in RHD versions has been set asymmetrically. For the front suspension, there’s a harder spring rate on the left side while at the rear the suspension arm has been installed upwards on the left side and downwards on the right. This means an imbalanced wheel load when the car is stationary, but which is equalised during driving, providing improved responsiveness, smoothness and steering feel, as well as enhanced cornering stability and riding comfort (for RHD only).

2. Interior

The quality feel of the instruments placed in front of the driver have been enhanced by the addition of blue lighting inside the tachometer ring to match the shift position indicator light giving a more sophisticated atmosphere in the cockpit.

Rear View Camera device will be standard on all models.

The Bose® sound system woofers, have been changed to Bose® Precision Sound System woofers that were developed for the EGOIST grade to further enhance sound quality.

3. TRACK FOCUSED VERSION (developed only in right hand drive form for – Japan and UK)

A new version within the GT-R line up is currently being planned for the UK, designed for customers who want to enjoy a more track biased driving experience in their Nissan GT-R at a competitive price.

Further details of this version and pricing of the MY2012 GT-R is expected in early December.

Nissan will be heading to Argentina for the tenth and final round of this year’s FIA GT1 World Championship this weekend aiming for nothing less than a double-Championship victory, after emerging from September’s tricky race double-header in China with flying colours.

Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr, in the no.23 JRM Racing Nissan GT-R, enter the race weekend at the beautiful and picturesque Lago Potrero de los Funes circuit in San Luis as leaders in the GT1 Drivers’ Championship standings, whilst JRM sit a close second in the Teams’ Championship. With an expectation that the track should be well favoured to the GT-R, and a successful trip to the Far East fresh in the memory, confidence is high amongst the driver ranks.

In the first of the Chinese races, at Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia, Nissan was able to confound pre-race predictions that the GT-Rs would not be suited to the short and twisty track, as the no.22 JRM of Peter Dumbreck and Richard Westbrook claimed second place in both the Qualifying Race and the Championship Race.

A week later, at Beijing’s Goldenport Park Circuit for round nine, the GT-R’s staged a fantastic recovery after a poor Qualifying session in which Jamie Campbell-Walter and David Brabham’s no.21 Sumo Power GT was the highest ranked Nissan in eighth. During the Qualifying Race, the no.23 JRM made up 10 places to finish in fourth, and things got even better in the Championship Race when Krumm and Luhr placed third to maintain their lead in the Drivers’ standings, and the other three GT-Rs all finished within the top eight.

Originally constructed in 1987, and rebuilt in 2008, the Lago Potrero de los Funes circuit is a semi-permanent track that encircles the scenic Lake Potrero de los Funes. At 6.270km (3.896 miles), the circuit is the longest used in this year’s Championship, and also houses the most corners, with 22 – a far cry from the 2.4km (1.5 miles) and 14 turn Goldenport Park Circuit used last time out. The Argentinian track is renowned for being a fast and challenging course with numerous undulations, plenty of high speed corners and many overtaking opportunities – attributes that should, in theory, suit the Nissan GT-R.

Speaking ahead of the race, Michael Krumm, no.23 JRM Racing, said: “San Luis is an exciting track to drive, with all its elevations and incredible scenery. But the walls are hard and the track is slippery, so it’s very easy to make a mistake. We can prepare well this year, as we have data from last year, so there are no surprises coming this time round. Watching last year’s races is also very helpful, particularly the on-board videos of course.

“We’ve had a fantastic year so far, with three Championship Race victories, but nevertheless it would be nice to win another one – especially this one! I think the GT-R should be very competitive at this circuit and we will do everything to achieve our goal of the Teams’ and Drivers’ titles. Even though we are carrying 30kg of success ballast, if we get everything perfect, then we should have every chance.”

Michael’s team-mate, Lucas Luhr, added: “This will be the first time I have been to the San Luis circuit, so I have looking at a lot of on-board video from last year.

“This is the last race of the season and we are leading the Championship, so my goal is to be at the front in qualifying, race one and, of course, race two. We will do everything we possibly can to make sure we end the season as the Champions!”

New Yorkers will get their first peek inside the Nissan NV200 Taxi, New York City’s exclusive Taxi of Tomorrow, at the Nissan Taxi of Tomorrow Design Expo, Nov. 1-5. The exhibit, featuring an interactive display showcasing the vehicle’s planned interior, will be hosted on the pedestrian plaza across from the Flatiron building at Broadway and Fifth Avenue. During the Design Expo, visitors will have the chance to experience first-of-a-kind interior features that incorporate ideas gathered from thousands of New York taxi owners, drivers, passengers and residents.

“Nissan’s NV200 Taxi will be the first taxi in the world to offer new and iconic features developed for, and with, New Yorkers,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, Nissan Fleet & Commercial Vehicles. “The Taxi of Tomorrow Design Expo will offer a first look at these one-of-a kind amenities, which include increased legroom, plenty of interior lighting, and materials that reduce odours and germs while supporting sustainability.”

The Taxi of Tomorrow project began in 2007 as an initiative to establish the vision for a next-generation New York City taxicab. Following a rigorous evaluation process, Nissan’s NV200 Taxi was selected in May 2011 as New York City’s exclusive Taxi of Tomorrow beginning in late 2013. Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution and the Design Trust for Public Space have engaged with Nissan and the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission in the vehicle’s design and development.

The Taxi of Tomorrow Design Expo will be open to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 1, noon-9 pm; Wednesday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Nov. 4, 8 am-9 pm; and, Saturday, Nov. 5, 8 am-6 pm.

About Taxi of Tomorrow

In 2007, City officials convened a group of stakeholders, including representatives of taxi drivers, owners and passengers, to create a set of goals for the next New York City taxi cab, a project called the Taxi of Tomorrow. Taxi of Tomorrow was the result of a groundbreaking effort by the Design Trust for Public Space and the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission to re-imagine the entire taxi system – including the vehicle – for the 21st century. In December 2009, the TLC issued a “request for proposals”, inviting auto manufacturers and designers to submit their best ideas for a purpose-built vehicle to serve as a New York City taxicab. At the end of the evaluation, the Nissan NV200 was selected and will be the next New York City taxicab for ten years, beginning in 2013.

Nissan’s bold plan to double its share of Europe’s LCV market within three years has been given a boost by the arrival of NV400, the company’s new heavy van.

Developed in cooperation with Alliance partner Renault, NV400 cannot be mistaken for anything other than a Nissan. Its distinctive ‘face’ was created at Nissan Design Europe (NDE) in Paddington and engineered by Nissan Technical Centre in Bedfordshire.

“The bold Nissan look helps us differentiate NV400 from its competitors and gives us a distinctive face in the market. With NV200 and now NV400, there is no doubt Nissan offers attractive functionality and great choice in the LCV market,” said Sergio Alcaraz, Vice President of Nissan’s, LCV Business Unit.

But there’s much more to NV400 than the way it looks. It is one of the most versatile and practical heavy van ranges on the market with gross vehicle weights (GVW) ranging from 2.8t to 4.5t.

For the first time on a van, Nissan can offer the choice of front or rear-wheel drive versions. The NV400 also comes in three wheelbase versions, four different lengths, three different heights and with cargo volumes ranging from 8m3 to 17m3. There are three power options plus six-speed manual and robotised transmissions.

In addition there are many different bodywork options, all backed by the Nissan warranty. As well as factory-built panel vans and combis, there are crew vans, box-bodies, tippers and dropsides all built in-house. Nissan will also offer a chassis-cab for specialist body builders.

“NV400 is very versatile and offers a solution to each need in the heavy van sector,” said Sergio Alcaraz. “It is much more than a replacement for Interstar and takes us into a much wider market segment thanks to the great breadth and depth of the range.”

Front-wheel drive offers a lower kerb weight for improved payloads, a lower frame height and improved fuel economy. Rear-wheel drive offers greater choice for chassis cab conversions and thanks to its high rear axle capacity is better suited to medium duty applications. Rear-drive versions are available with single or twin rear wheels.

Power comes from a newly developed direct injection, four-cylinder, 16-valve turbodiesel engine. At 2.3-litres it is smaller than the Interstar’s 2.5-dCi unit yet power outputs are the same – 100, 125 and 150 hp – and torque figures have improved to 285, 310 and 350 Nm respectively. All are Euro 5 compliant and enjoy lower running costs thanks to improved economy and to major service intervals which have been extended to 25,000 miles or every two years.

MacPherson strut-type independent suspension can be found at the front, while front-wheel drive versions have a single leaf spring at the rear. Rear-drive models have either a dual spring (single rear wheel) or triple leaf (double rear wheel).

Standard or optional equipment levels reflect passenger car levels and include air conditioning, parking sensors, cruise control with speed limiter, trip computer, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and USB/iPod playback through the sound system. A rear view parking camera is also optionally available to make parking manoeuvres as safe as possible.

Another innovative option is Nissan Connect by TomTom. As well as conventional mapping and route planning, owners can subscribe to TomTom’s Live Service content which includes live HD Traffic updates, fixed and mobile speed camera warnings, weather forecasting and access to Google Local Search, a vast database which lists the most up-to-date contact information of millions of business and services.

The Nissan NV400 is on sale now priced from £18,995 ex VAT.

Car buyers opting for Nissan’s sector-defining Juke crossover are about to get even more than they bargained for. As part of Nissan’s constant drive to improve its products, both the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre dCi diesel drivetrains have undergone an optimisation programme to further reduce emissions and boost fuel economy.

Thanks to revised gear ratios, 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel models fitted with manual transmissions are now cleaner and more fuel-efficient.

The 1.6-litre petrol variant now returns 47.1mpg on the combined cycle – an improvement of 2.3mpg – and emits just 139g/km of CO2, a reduction of 8g/km. As a result of these changes, the 1.6-litre petrol model now sits in VED Band E, meaning that owners will pay £15 less to tax their cars. With the fuel savings factored in, the optimisation changes will save the typical owner £232 over the course of three years*.

Customers opting for the revised 1.5-litre dCi diesel see fuel economy improve from 55.4mpg to 57.6mpg on the combined cycle, and emissions fall from 134g/km to just 129g/km. As with the petrol model, the revised diesel-powered Juke drops a VED band (from E to D), and now costs just £95 a year to tax. Over the course of three years, the savings add up to an estimated £171.92*.

The icing on the cake for all Juke buyers is that these revisions come at no additional cost. On-the-road prices have been held, meaning that buyers really can make a saving by choosing the Juke.

Over 22,000 Jukes have been sold in the UK since it was launched on 24th September 2010, replicating the success of the Nissan Qashqai by moving out of a niche and into the mainstream.

*Savings based on annual mileage of 10k per year and national average fuel prices: petrol 136.2p / diesel 140.3p.

Having created one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK car market, Nissan’s Qashqai is ready to move even further ahead of the competition. The next evolution for the top selling crossover comes in the form of an all-new diesel engine that lets drivers enjoy the best of both worlds – greatly reduced emissions with improved in-gear performance.

With fuel prices pressing ever higher and the motorist not only looking to save on running costs but also reduce their environmental impact, Qashqai’s new 1.6-litre dCi engine arrives at the perfect moment. Replacing the 2.0dCi manual, the new four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivers dramatically enhanced economy and emissions in the Qashqai and Qashqai+2.

Like every Nissan producing less than 130g/km, the 1.6 dCi wears Nissan’s Pure Drive badge. The first Qashqai models to benefit from the new engine are available to order now for delivery in October, and offer CO2 emissions of only 129g/km. Early next year Nissan will add its latest Stop/Start system, automatically turning off the engine when stationary to bring the Qashqai’s emissions down to an even more impressive 119g/km.

The savings for Qashqai drivers will be immediately felt. A 31 per cent improvement in fuel economy results in 62.8mpg (+14.9mpg) on the combined cycle while the first year’s VED is free of charge. Company car drivers will also enjoy significant savings with a benefit in kind tax banding of just 13 per cent, for stop start versions, further broadening the appeal of Qashqai to the important fleet sector. What’s more, the 1.6 dCi without stop and start costs £250 less to buy than the equivalent 2.0 dCi.

Nissan Motor GB Managing Director Jim Wright said “Current financial pressures for both the individual and company car buyers mean costs are constantly being analysed so it is good to see how Nissan’s technical innovations, introduced on this engine, help to minimise overall running costs.”

Unlike some eco-friendly diesel models, the new 1.6dCi doesn’t forget the importance of performance, either. Engineers have not only been able to make the 130PS engine quieter and more refined than its 2.0-litre predecessor, but they have also reduced the number of engine revs required to reach peak 320Nm torque from 2,000rpm to only 1,750rpm. What this means to the driver is that despite all of the savings offered by the 1.6 dCi, acceleration in the crucial 30-50mph bracket is also quicker, taking only 6.29 seconds.

And remember, there’s more to Qashqai than just a pretty face. Coping with harsh winter weather and slippery campsites is no problem for the all-wheel drive version, which becomes one of the lowest CO2 emitting crossovers on sale in the UK, while the Qashqai+2 offers the lowest CO2 emissions of any seven seat crossover on the UK market.

“This is a remarkable engine, best in class in so many respects. It provides the dynamic driving performance which matches that of the outgoing 2.0-litre dCi yet produces fuel consumption and emission figures equal to or better than our existing 1.5-litre dCi unit,” said Paul Willcox, Senior Vice President, Nissan Europe.

In addition to its efficient new engine, Qashqai has also benefited from a number of innovative items of equipment including for the first time in its class, Around View Monitor. Up until now this type of advanced visual parking aid is more usually found in the luxury car class, but Nissan’s commitment to delivering the latest technology to its customers means

Around View Monitor will be fitted as standard to all Qashqai and Qashqai+2 Tekna variants.

Using a set of discrete external cameras, Around View Monitor makes manoeuvring and parking as safe and easy as possible by giving the driver a real-time bird’s eye view of the surrounding environment. Working seamlessly with the popular Nissan Connect touch screen navigation system, Around View Monitor adds three additional cameras to the Qashqai’s existing rear view system to create the ultimate 360° overview. What’s more, the driver can choose to focus on the image feed from any particular camera when looking out for a particular obstacle in front, behind or to either side of the Qashqai.

Nissan has released the prices for its new highly-advanced, Micra DIG-S. Representing the latest in low-emission engine technology, the DIG-S offers the performance of a bigger petrol engine but with the fuel economy of a diesel.

The ultra low emission 1.2-litre, three cylinder supercharged petrol engine emits only 95g/km for the Visia version and 99g/km for the better-equipped Acenta and Tekna models. Official fuel consumption is 68.9mpg or 65.7mpg on the combined cycle, beating some similarly sized diesel models. Unlike most economy models though, the DIG-S also has a performance boost, with power rising from 80PS to 98PS.

The cost of this ground-breaking technology? The DIG-S costs just £1,000 more than the equivalent*, non-supercharged version; much less than the price premiums charged by many rivals for equivalent diesel versions. Owners will also see savings at the pumps, with diesel currently averaging 4.1p per litre** more than petrol.

The engine achieves the improvements in power and economy through a series of measures to improve efficiency. Direct injection, valve timing control with eco mode, improved exhaust gas recirculation, specially shaped pistons and a higher compression ratio ensure the most power is extracted from every drop of fuel.

To reduce inefficient power loss within the engine operating system the Miller Cycle is incorporated. By allowing the inlet valve to stay open longer, along with a higher compression ratio, the compression stroke becomes more efficient.

More energy is saved by using an intelligent alternator which recharges the battery when the engine power is not in demand, such as under braking. A stop / start function also helps to reduce emissions and fuel consumption by automatically turning off the engine whilst stationary and restarts again when you are ready to move off.
In just a few days time, GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez is going to see all of his dreams come true when he competes at Le Mans in the Signatech Nissan LMP2 car. Since he won GT Academy in 2008, Lucas has been on a steep learning curve and has now made the grade as a professional sportscar racer.

“Le Mans has been my dream since I was ten-years-old,” said Lucas. “It is the most important race in the world and a very important event for my family. My father has all the yearbooks, which I used to read as a kid, never thinking I would one day be part of it. Even after winning GT Academy I never expected to get this far and I don’t think I’m really going to believe it until it happens. The Test Day was an amazing experience for me; on my first lap is started to rain so it was pretty scary along the Mulsanne. After that though I enjoyed the moment, going through all those legendary corners and I can’t wait to go back there for the race.”

GT Academy is now in its third season. The season two winner, Jordan Tresson, is racing the RJN Motorsport Nissan 370Z in the Blancpain Endurance Series this year and finished second in the GT4 class at the his recent race in Navarra, Spain. Hot on Lucas and Jordan’s heels are the finalists from Season Three of GT Academy who will travel to Le Mans to get a taster of life as a professional driver. They will be put through their paces during the weekend at a special boot camp before jumping into a fleet of Nissan 370Zs to travel back to the UK for the final reckoning at Silverstone where the third winner will be chosen.

Nissan has created a rich history at Le Mans since its first attempt at the world-famous race in 1986 where the company entered two of its R85V prototypes. Throughout the 80′s and 90′s Nissan entered a host of GT and prototypes in the 24-hour race; from the R90CK which took pole position in 1990 to the R390 GT1 that finished third overall in 1998 and finally the R391 in 1999.

Now after an eleven-year absence Nissan is back! The Japanese manufacturer is supplying the Nissan VK45DE V8 engines to three LMP2 teams in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours: partner team Signatech Nissan, Greaves Motorsport and Team Oreca Matmut.

Nissan will also provide a glimpse into the future at Le Mans when it’s all-new EV racing car will be seen in action for the first time outside of Japan. The Nissan LEAFTM NISMO RC made its debut at the New York Motor Show earlier this year and is heralded as the car that will bring new meaning to the term ‘Racing Green’.

“The 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours has provided us with a great opportunity to show the world that Nissan is at the forefront of automotive innovation,” commented Darren Cox, Chief Marketing Manager (Crossover and Sports Cars), Nissan Europe. “We’re excited to see our virtual-to-reality racer, Lucas, making his Le Mans debut in a Nissan-powered LMP2 car. GT Academy was never designed to be a one-off stunt but instead a genuinely different approach to finding new motorsport talent from the vast pool of racing gamers out there. Now in it’s third season in Europe we have provided a real ‘ladder of motorsport’ for our winners and will continue to do so. If that’s not enough innovation we are previewing another new way of going racing – the 100% electric Nissan LEAFTM NISMO RC. Whilst other manufacturers have talked about innovation in electrification of motoring, Nissan has gone and done it. European Car of the Year, now real race car within months!”

The running costs of a super car has now become substantially more affordable thanks to Nissan offering a three year servicing plan, along with three years RAC cover, for the 2011 version GT-R.

The free offer of the servicing plan is included when purchasing a GT-R through Nissan’s own personal contract plan (PCP) known as Preferences. Should you choose to finance your car any other way, or indeed you already have a 2011 GT-R, then the servicing plan can be purchased for a low cost payment of just £499.

The Nissan servicing plan only applies to the 2011 version of the GT-R and covers a three year period or up to the equivalent mileage of 27,000. All labour, parts, oils and fluids required to carry out the routine maintenance, by a Nissan High Performance Centre, are fully covered by the policy.

All Nissan High Performance Centres are specially trained and equipped to look after the Nissan sports car range and are sole suppliers of the GT-R. With 19 of them located across the UK you will not have to travel too far to experience their expertise.

This offer is for a limited period of time and further details can be obtained from any of the NHPC’s. Location of your nearest dealer can be found on www.nissan.co.uk.

Charging a Nissan LEAF in London has become simpler and cheaper with the launch of the Source London charging network. To mark the start of the initiative, Nissan is providing LEAF owners across the capital with access to the charging points for free.

In support of the scheme, launched today by Mayor Boris Johnson, Nissan will give all LEAF owners who live within 40 miles of a Source London branded charging point 12 months free subscription when they buy the 100% electric vehicle before the end of the year. This is in addition to existing savings as LEAF owners do not pay any road tax or the London congestion charge.

The Source London scheme provides a city-wide network of public charging points across the capital. A network of over 1,300 charging points will be installed by the end of 2013 in residential streets, supermarket and public car parks, shopping and leisure centres. Members of the scheme, which normally costs £100 to join, will need just one card to access all the charging points regardless of which borough in London they live.

Paul Willcox, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB) Limited said: “Nissan fully supports the Mayor’s agenda to promote zero carbon emission vehicles in London, which is why we are providing free access to the network for all LEAF owners across the capital. A city-wide charging infrastructure will be of great benefit to all Nissan LEAF owners.”

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “I want to rapidly accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles and make London the epicentre of electric driving in Europe. Increasing numbers of motorists are opting for cleaner, greener electric transport, delivering a host of benefits to the driver including a 100 per cent congestion charge discount. This is set to deliver considerable environmental benefits to our city.

“Through Source London we want to give drivers the confidence that they can plug into this fantastic new motoring technology.”

Euro NCAP (the European New Car Assessment Programme) has awarded the 100% electric Nissan LEAF the highest five star car safety rating following its performance in the independent organisation’s stringent crash tests. The Nissan LEAF is the first electric vehicle ever to earn this distinction.

The reigning European and World Car of the Year earned an 89% rating for adult safety, an 83% rating for child protection and an 84% rating for its on-board safety assist systems, which include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a speed limiter as standard. The compact family hatchback also earned a higher-than-average 65% score for pedestrian safety, thanks in part to the low nose design and the comparative lack of ‘hard points’ under the bonnet.

“The Nissan LEAF proves that EVs can achieve the same safety levels as traditional cars. The standard is now set for the next generation of such cars on the European market,” said Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen.

Nissan LEAF’s safety assessment followed standard Euro NCAP procedure, with tests for frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact and whiplash. The car’s 48 lithium-ion battery modules, which are housed in a special compartment beneath the floor, completely withstood all the impacts.

The EV’s battery system was switched on during the crash simulations to test the in-built safety measures of the electrical system, which includes automatic cut-off isolation in the event of an accident. The car passed those with flying colours, too.

“We are not surprised by these results,” said Jerry Hardcastle, Nissan’s vice president of vehicle design & development. “Nissan LEAF has gone through more tests than any car we have ever produced. On top of the conventional offset barrier and side impact tests, we have tested the electrical system in every way to ensure it can never be overcharged and that the isolation programme works as intended in a crash.”

The Euro NCAP result comes less than a month after Nissan LEAF earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US and is the second five-star rating for Nissan in Europe this year. In February, the compact crossover Nissan Juke also scored top marks.

The Nissan LEAF, which went on sale in the UK in March, has a range between charges of up to 110 miles, as tested over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

The family hatchback is powered by an in-house developed compact electric motor and inverter in the front of the car which drives the front wheels. The AC motor develops 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 90mph.

Nissan LEAF comes fully equipped with features such as climate control, satellite navigation, rear-view parking camera, a quick charge socket and innovative smart-phone connectivity.

To celebrate in Nissan’s global success in GT racing and 40 years of Z in the UK a special ‘GT Edition’ is being unleashed. Offering special body colours, unique GT stripes, darkened 19inch RAYS forged alloy wheels and a number of significant suspension and equipment changes.

The GT Edition recognises its heritage with a nod to the 1970s and the birth of the original Z car: special side stripes.

Grey ‘GT’ stripes running along the flanks of the car contrast with each of the special edition’s three body colours – Pearl White, Kuro (metallic) black and Black Rose, the latter shade is exclusive to GT Edition. The exterior is set off by the standard 19inch RAYS forged alloy wheels finished in a dramatic dark anthracite colour.

In deference to the higher average speeds routinely enjoyed in Europe, changes to the GT chassis have been engineered by technicians from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) based in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. The principal modification has been to retune the dampers to provide the ideal balance between ride comfort and high-speed handling.

Equipment changes include the arrival of a rear view parking camera as part of the Premium Connect satellite navigation system and the fitment of a tyre pressure monitoring system. The advanced seven-speed automatic option now has a snow mode which, when applied, sets the car off in second gear and controls engine revs to prevent wheel spin on ice or snow. Refinement is enhanced by revisions to underbody insulation to reduce road noise.

“The 370Z is an iconic sports car and the GT Edition underlines its appeal to enthusiasts everywhere,” said Pierre Loing, Vice President Product Planning, Nissan International SA. “The combination of outstanding performance and the dramatic looks of this very special 370Z more than lives up to the heritage of its illustrious forebear while its strong links to the race track shows its true pedigree.”

As the name implies, the GT Edition celebrates Nissan’s presence in GT racing on the world stage. As well as its continuing commitment to Super GT in Japan, Nissan has been one of the leading lights in the new GT1 World Championship, winning the prestigious Tourist Trophy in 2010 with the fearsome GT-R. The Nissan Z family has been a race winner in the FIA GT4 European Cup since its inception and competes annually in various 24 hour races – the highlight being the Nürburgring 24 hours.

The Nissan 370Z GT4 Cup race car has raced toe to toe against competition from Aston Martin, Porsche and BMW across Europe in the real world while it is also the racing gamers’ vehicle of choice in the virtual world.

An innovative link with Gran Turismo 5 game for PlayStation® 3 has seen cyber racers compete against each other to win a drive in a real 370Z GT4 cup car. The 2011 GT Academy series, already underway, with on-line gamers ready to swap the virtual world for the real thing.

The best will become part of the Nissan GT Academy, a motor racing ladder that could take top drivers from local series through the European Blancpain Endurance series right the way to international GT1 World Championship.

The new GT Edition 370Z is available to order from participating 370Z dealers with first deliveries expected from 1 June 2011 and priced from £35,000

New York is “hailing” a new era of urban mobility today, as the city with the United States’ largest taxi fleet has selected Nissan to design and supply the next-generation “Taxi of Tomorrow.”

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) selected the Nissan NV200 as the exclusive taxi of New York City beginning in late 2013.. The competition built upon more than a century of taxi industry heritage to drive the design and creation of a purpose-built vehicle, tuned to the city’s streets.

“Nissan is proud to provide the next generation of taxis for the City of New York,” said Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares.. “The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day.”

The Nissan NV200 taxi will be produced at Nissan’s facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Nissan NV200 taxi will be a modified version of the compact commercial vehicle currently available in global markets including the UK.

As part of the program, Nissan also will work with the City and taxi owners on a pilot programme to study the use of zero-emission, electric vehicles as taxis. Nissan will provide up to six 100-percent electric Nissan LEAFs to taxi owners for testing in 2012 as well as the charging stations to support their use.

“The city’s Taxi of Tomorrow is the Nissan NV 200 – and it’s going to be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient cab the city has ever had,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We started this process to leverage our taxi industry’s purchasing power to get the highest quality taxi, one that that can expand and redefine the legendary image of New York City taxicabs. The new taxis will be custom-designed to meet the specific demands of carrying 600,000 passengers a day in New York City traffic and the vehicle meets the top priorities identified by the public in our on-line survey.”

Sports car fans heading for the PistonHeads Performance Car show, held within the Autosport International event, in Birmingham this month are set for a feast of Nissan horsepower.

The first treat is the opportunity to see the awesome new Nissan GT-R. Revised for 2011, it now packs a 530PS punch and produces 612Nm of torque. This is enough to power the supercar to 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars in the world.

Besides more power, the enhanced GT-R is distinguishable by its new wheel design, LED daytime running lights, larger front brakes, improved air intakes, red engine cover and a revised interior. It is available only in one grade known simply as the GT-R but with two interior choices – Recaro black full leather seats with red flashes or premium with a leather and Alcantara seat trim – both available at no extra cost. The car on display at the show will have a Recaro Black interior with the new exterior colour for 2011, Daytona blue.

Sitting alongside the GT-R will be the latest versions of the 370Z Coupe and Roadster, both celebrating the 40th year of Nissan ‘Z’ cars in the UK. Producing 328PS from their 3.7-litre V6 engines, they have come a long way from the original 240Z which was first officially imported into the UK in August 1971 with a 150PS powerplant. Much of this iconic car’s character has been carried over to the latest incarnation 370Z though, including its front engine, rear wheel drive layout and its two seat driving experience. Even elements of the original styling can be seen in the bonnet and roof lines.

Show visitors going beyond Nissan’s own stand will be able to spot some even more extreme Nissans. Performance Tuners Sumo Power will be showing off their stunning FIA GT1 championship race winning GT-R which recently picked up the RAC tourist trophy. The second GT-R race car will be strutting its stuff in the ‘Fifth Gear Live Action Arena’ where spectators will be able to see, hear and smell the car in action. Drivers of both cars will be available for autographs at various times over the four days of the show.

Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd has unveiled the enhanced 2011 Nissan GT-R, which is now available to order at Nissan High Performance Centres nationwide.

2011 Nissan GT-R Outline

Since its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2007, the Nissan GT-R has enthralled its customers as the definitive accessible supercar. The 2011 Nissan GT-R has been developed under the theme of the ‘World’s best multi-performance and pleasure of responsive driving’. The exterior features more strength and stability, while the traditional creative flair associated with the GT-R’s striking appearance has also been updated, to offer improved aerodynamics. A sportier interior complements the enhanced design.

Mechanical

Engine and Transmission

Engine output is significantly improved to 530PS (390KW)/6,400rpm, with the maximum torque of 612Nm from 3,200 to 6,000rpm. The engine cover is, enigmatically, painted red to illustrate its enhanced performance.

By adopting an ultra-low precious metal catalyst and an engine control module fitted with high-capacity microprocessors, cleaner emissions have been achieved. Fuel economy has also been improved by modifying the boost pressure of the turbocharger, valve timing and air mixture ratio along with larger diameter inlet pipes and a modified exhaust system.

SAVE mode is a newly-adopted system, replacing ‘snow Mode’, which optimises driving torque and modifies the gearshift schedule to improve fuel economy when driving on motorways or open roads. The features of Snow Mode are also retained.

- Standing start performance can now be maximised through the use of R mode. To activate, the driver must select R mode, depress the brake whilst in gear, apply full throttle and release the brake as soon as possible. The system will monitor oil temperatures to ensure reliability is maintained and prevent further use if the temperatures rise above the maximum allowance.

- To help control tight turning at slow speeds a new 2-Wheel drive mode will temporarily shift the car to 2-Wheel drive as long as the speed is below 6MPH and the steering wheel is turned more than half way.

Body

A very rigid and lightweight strut supporting bar, made of carbon composite with an aluminium honeycomb, has been installed in the partition wall of the engine compartment. By linking right and left struts to quickly receive suspension input, the vehicle body’s responsiveness is enhanced.

An additional support member has been installed in the passenger’s side dash panel. The responsiveness of the chassis is further improved by enhanced rigidity achieved by the connection with the engine compartment.

Suspension and Brakes

- For the front suspension the spring, shock absorber and stabiliser has been modified to improve the vertical load response of the tyre. The front caster angle is increased from 5°35 to 6°00 to improve tyre road-holding ability when steering and stability in a straight line.

- The rear suspension toe performance has been modified by changing the roll centre height to a lower position. This gives an improvement to the grip of the inside edge of the tyres while conducting turning manoeuvres.

- An aluminium free-piston shock absorber has been newly-developed, which generates more precise damping force to constantly provide stable road-holding and a load shift that quickly responds to the driver’s input. Reduced shock absorber friction provides a quality and smoother ride.

- To help lengthen the life span of the front brake discs a larger diameter disc is fitted (Φ390+10mm). Developed uniquely by Nissan offering more resistance to fade at high temperatures when driven hard.

Tyres and wheels

- The Dunlop SP SPORT MAXX GT 600 DSST CTT tyre has a new compound to improve grip. With a revamped structure and improved rigidity of tread and sidewall, straight-line stability in rutted roads is enhanced.

- Newly-designed, lighter and more rigid aluminium forged wheels, made by Rays are provided to improve tyre responsiveness to vertical load. Knurling inside the wheel has been modified to avoid any tyre rotation deviation caused by the GT-R’s improved engine output. On the wheel surface, the new colour, Hyper Blue Black Chrome, oozes quality and features a performance feel, thanks to a deep gloss created by a five-layered coating.

Design

Exterior and aerodynamics

Even with a more intense and stable chassis, the GT-R’s world-beating aerodynamic performance has been further improved. Downforce has been increased by around 10%, while a co-efficient of drag is further reduced from 0.27 to 0.26.

- Stability is improved by an enlarged bumper and grille openings, with increased three-dimensional effects.

- The front bumper has been redesigned, with double rectifier fins which increases front downforce by around 10%, while reducing air resistance inside the engine compartment and also increases the air flow through a radiator which cools the front brakes. Each side incorporates an LED daytime running light fitted with a large-diameter reflecting surface emitting a high-intensity white light.

- A newly-designed rear bumper with a low centre of gravity has been created and features a sculptured lower part with an extended rear end. By extending the rear diffuser, underfloor cooling performance is enhanced, with reduced air resistance.

- Cooling performance for the rear exhaust silencer is improved and rear downforce is increased by about 10% by introducing a rear bumper air outlet, which removes air in the rear wheel housing.

- The four tailpipe finishers have also been enlarged.

- A high-intensity LED rear fog lamp is now incorporated within the extended rear diffuser.

- Six exterior colours are available, including two new colours – Metallic Black, replacing solid Kuro Black and Daytona Blue replacing Titanium Grey.

Interior

- A newly-shaped pad and finisher surround the navigation system display, with uniform stitch lines, illustrates the enhanced feeling of quality.

- The heater control panel now has a real carbon finish surrounding the switches which are now all finished in matt black.

- The paddle shifters have been changed to feature magnesium.

- Chrome-plated rings in the console and air-conditioner outlets are finished with a sporty, black and smokey coating.

Seat

Despite the GT-R being a one grade line up, there is the option to choose between two different seat choices at no additional cost.

The two designs are as follows -

- Recaro Black, as the name suggests features the Recaro name and is a leather appointed bucket seat with red side flashes. This comes complete with a dark headlining and a red flash on the gear lever

- The second choice is a premium leather covered seat available in black or light grey. Supplied with this seat design is a light grey coloured headlining providing a lighter feel to the interior

- Both seats provide an improved level of comfort and safety while cornering. In addition, fatigue levels are reduced for the thighs and lower back by changing the shape and extending the length of the seating surface. They come with electric adjustment for forward, back and height, along with two switch levels for heated seat intensity.

Pricing

- With the new on the road price of £69,950 (incl 20%VAT) GT-R still represents outstanding performance at a competitive price. The standard ‘no extra cost’ specification list remains as strong as always with Premium Connect HDD satellite navigation, Bose stereo system, iPod™ connectivity, hard drive music storage, Bluetooth phone connection, 20” alloy wheels, runflat tyres, and individual climate control air conditioning. Add that to the performance delivered from the V6 twin turbo through the GR6 twin clutch system, with the aid of the 4 wheel drive system, and the on the road price, the GT-R remains untouchable.

Already highly acclaimed for its durability, practicality and convenience, the revisions include an updated exterior design plus new levels of interior quality, comfort and functionality and CO2 performance.

The entry level X-TRAIL remains the Acenta, now priced at only £23,995 on-the-road. This undercuts the Honda CR-V ES diesel by £685, and the Land Rover Freelander GS by more than £1,000. Standard equipment on the Acenta includes body coloured electrically adjusting door mirrors, privacy glass, automatic headlamps and wipers, front fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The range-topping Tekna model costs just £27,495. Additional features above Acenta trim include power-folding door mirrors, xenon headlamps, panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The infotainment package incorporates a Connect Premium HDD sat-nav with music server and USB port, a rear view camera and BOSE audio with nine speakers.

CO2 emissions for the X-TRAIL 2.0-litre dCi 173 PS diesel manual now stand at just 168g/km. That’s a drop of 30g/km, or 15%. This moves the car down two VED tax bands from Band J (£425) to Band H (£250). It also takes the company car BIK percentage liability from 32% to 26%. There has also been significant improvement on fuel economy, with performance up from 38.2mpg to 44.1mpg on the combined cycle.

The 2.0-litre dCi 150 PS diesel automatic also benefits from Nissan’s engineering excellence. The CO2 drops from 216g/km to 188g/km, or 13%, which takes the car from VED Band K to Band J and company car BIK liability from 35% to 30%. Fuel economy improves from 34.9mpg to 39.8mpg on the combined cycle.

Andy Connell, 4×4 Marketing Manager commented: “These changes make the X-TRAIL one of the most competitive compact SUVs available today. In terms of performance versus emissions, it could be considered the class leader. Our extensive upgrades will help maintain its position in the SUV segment as one of the few truly versatile and agile four-wheel drive vehicles on sale in the UK.”

Technical changes have improved its credentials considerably, without impacting on the car’s outstanding performance both on and off-road. It’s still rated to tow a trailer weighing up to 2,200 kg, has 360Nm of torque at just 2,000rpm and accelerates from 0-62mph in 10 seconds.

Mechanical revisions to the X-TRAIL include a new manual gearbox for optimised environmental performance, and an improved shift schedule and enhanced friction reduction for the automatic transmission. The car also features low rolling resistance tyreson Acenta 17″ wheels and lightweight castings on Tekna 18″ wheels.

<img src="http://motoring-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/61275nis.jpg" alt="" title="Nissan Qashqai" width="350" height="232" align="left" size-full wp-image-4622" />One of the best selling cars in the UK has just got even better – for both drivers and the environment -with a range of upgrades making the British built model more appealing than ever.

Many enhancements feature where they really matter – beneath the bonnet. Stop/Start features for the first time as an option on 1.6 litre petrol variants. This fuel saving and emissions reducing system not only makes the Qashqai an even greener choice, it also drops it down one VED tax band.

In the diesel line-up every model now benefits from diesel particulate filter technology with the addition of DPF to the 1.5-litre dCi engine. But these green diesel improvements have not come at the expense of power. In fact, the 1.5 dCi’s output has increased from 106PS to 110PS.

What is more, all engines in the Qashqai and Qashqai+2 ranges are now compliant with EURO V emissions regulations.

Representing over 40% of Qashqai sales, the 1.6 petrol Qashqai will now benefit from an increased output of 117PS and 158Nm of torque (up from 115PS and 156Nm). Furthermore, the frugal four-cylinder will also be available with a Stop/Start System for the first time. For just £200 over standard models, the advanced system automatically stops the engine when the driver pulls to a standstill and puts the car in neutral, starting automatically when the clutch is pressed enabling you to pull away. This not only improves fuel economy by up to 3% but also drops the Qashqai down one VED tax band.

Elsewhere in the range the ever-popular n-tec grade is set to become even more tempting. The luxurious standard equipment list of Nissan Connect (an advanced combined satellite navigation and audio system), a colour reversing camera, a panoramic glass roof, privacy glass and more is enhanced with a number of new additions.

Previously a £400 option, 18-inch alloy wheels are now fitted as standard to all n-tec models, trimmed in an exclusive black and silver finish. Drivers can also choose a new Chrome Pack option. For only £250, the Qashqai and Qashqai+2 n-tec are enhanced with chrome door handles, chrome fog lamp surrounds and chrome side strips. Inside, the pack also includes door and tailgate entry guards and carpet mats.

Nissan’s UK MD, Paul Willcox comments: “Anything we do to the Qashqai is always significant news for Nissan – this is our best selling model on its home turf here in the UK. Its continued success is great news for UK manufacturing and everyone at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant.”

Available to order from Nissan’s UK dealer network now, first deliveries of the Qashqai and Qashqai+2 Model Year 11 will begin in October.

From October, buyers of Nissan’s SUV X-TRAIL will benefit from a series of extensive updates to maintain its position in the SUV segment as one of the few, versatile and agile four-wheel drive vehicles on the European market.

Already well regarded for its durability, comfort, practicality and convenience, the changes refresh X-TRAIL’s exterior styling; improve the interior quality and functionality, as well as mechanical and aerodynamic changes.

The most obvious changes have been made to the frontal aspect of X-TRAIL which emphasise a feeling of integration to the car body, with a completely redesigned grille, headlights and bumper assembly. Directly from the front, the more sophisticated, technical appearance makes the car look more dynamic. The grille is of higher quality and flows down into the bumper assembly. The lower part of the bumper is angled outwards, suggesting a wider track and more solid stance.

The overall feeling from the front expresses the sense of unity to the top and bottom. The grille retains the twin angled struts either side of the Nissan logo, which is a signature found on Nissan’s SUV range globally.

The lights are sleeker and more technical in appearance, with either Xenon or halogen projectors (depending on grade) for the main lights and halogen parabole for the high beam. The indicators remain integrated in the assembly above the headlights. The background to the headlamps is painted black on all grades and fog lamps are mounted below the headlights, recessed in the bumper.

At the rear, the X-TRAIL’s distinctive vertical lights have been updated to incorporate LED light technology for the running lights and braking, improving visibility and, therefore, safety. The indicator is incorporated into the lower portion of the light assembly, with the running/brake lights to the outside of it.

In profile, the X-TRAIL’s stance has been improved thanks to an increase in wheel size, with a ten-spoke 18” alloy wheel design, which is also wider, now up to 225/55/18 in size giving X-Trail even more stance to the road. The small increase in tyre width has led to a slight widening of the wheelarch moulding, which adds a little extra presence to the X-TRAIL’s stance.

There is also a new double five-spoke design of 17” wheel, giving an added premium feeling to the X-TRAIL Acenta.

X-TRAIL’s dimensions have slightly changed as a result of the exterior updates; the overall length has increased by 10mm as a result of the redesigned front end, while the height and width also increase by 10mm due to the increase in tyre width and diameter.

Moving to the interior, the design has been updated to give a more harmonious ambience thanks to improved materials and better colour coordination, in particular, the area around the base of the A-pillar.

The materials used for the switch surrounds on the steering wheel, around the gear selector and on the door-mounted armrest have all been improved for better touch feeling, while thicker, soft-touch materials have been chosen for the cloth seats.

For the leather equipped interior, the stitching is more attractive and more premium. The driver will appreciate the improved visibility and legibility of the new main combimeter, with bigger and clearer speed and engine speed readouts enhancing the quality. In between those principal dials is a new drive computer with a white-on-black display for maximum clarity. The computer offers a series of useful information for the driver, including: fuel economy, outside temperature (including ice warning function), cruising range, average speed and a reminder to take a break.

The drive computer screen can also display additional information such as warnings for low fuel, parking brake, undetected Intelligent Key and open door, as well as vital maintenance information, such as tyre maintenance, low oil and a service reminder.

Rear occupant comfort has been improved thanks to redesigned front seats, creating an additional 10mm of knee-room, without compromising on comfort for the front seat occupants. And to better survive the wear and tear of the X-TRAIL’s busy daily life, the rear tonneau cover material has been upgraded.

Reflecting its role as a hard-working family car, the X-TRAIL is now specified with a glovebox that will either keep its contents warm or cold – ideal for drinks – depending on the prevailing conditions and if X-TRAIL’s occupants need cooling down or warming up!

And to ensure that drivers and passengers returning to the X-TRAIL in cold conditions can defrost as quickly as possible, the heating system has been upgraded for quicker warm-up, as well as more efficient cooling in hot conditions.

Rear seat passengers can now enjoy a toasty drive as the revised X-TRAIL will be available with rear seat warmers, offering two levels of heating.

Under the X-TRAIL’s skin, significant updates to the diesel version have resulted in Euro 5 compliance. A key innovation is the addition of an extra injector port, taking the total number to seven, while the piston bowl has been adapted for the new injector configuration.

The manual gearbox has revised ratios for a better compromise between acceleration, fuel economy and emissions, while the automatic gearbox has been modified for reduced friction. An additional feature is the gearchange indicator function in the drive computer screen, showing drivers when to change gear for optimised economy.

Thanks to optimised underbody aerodynamics, X-TRAIL’s Cd is reduced from 0.36 to 0.35.

Speaking about the updates to Nissan’s X-TRAIL, Vincent Wijnen Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan Europe, said: “All of these changes will reinforce the X-TRAIL as one of the few genuine compact SUVs which can just as comfortably tackle the demands of everyday family life, as it can a muddy, slippery track when it transports a family for a weekend of adventure. X-TRAIL customers love it for its ease and convenience of daily use, no matter what situation they find themselves in. With these revisions to Nissan’s X-TRAIL, there is even more to love about X-TRAIL.”

The campaign uses tongue-in-cheek phrases such as “The Winner Hans Down,” “The Germans Came Off Wurst,” “Kaisers Chiefed” and “Deutschland Deutschland Über-Rated” in order to make people question why they would buy German brands when Nissan can offer performance at a more accessible price.

Last week, Nissan brought the advertising to life, taking an Audi TTS manual coupe around the streets of London blazoned with the words: “More expensive, slower and less powerful than a Nissan 370Z.” It was joined by a Porsche Cayman bearing the slogan: “I dream of being as fast as a Nissan 370Z” on the side. Other cars featured in the advertising campaign include versions of the BMW Z4 as well as the Porsche Boxster and 911*.

The campaign was officially launched on the giant 360-degree 47ft tall BFI IMAX billboard at Waterloo, London, and will continue to appear in key national men’s lifestyle and motoring titles, plus outdoor poster sites across the UK over the next six months.

Talking of the campaign, Steve McLennan, Nissan Marketing Director explains: “It simply challenges the convention of German sportscars being the only benchmark for performance and quality.

“Nissan is confident in the ability of 370Z and GT-R to eclipse our comparable German rivals in terms of outright performance and accessibility and it’s now time to shout about it.”

Now, 18 years, more than 2.3 million units and one model change later, Micra production in the UK has come to an end.

In its place, Sunderland is already looking forward to the launch of the all-new Juke crossover car, which will enter production on the former Micra line in mid-August.

But before then staff took time to bid farewell to a car that has attained iconic status at the plant where it has been produced for almost two decades.

The last Micra to be produced in Sunderland will drive off the line during late shift tonight, Friday 16th July.

It marks the end of an era stretching back to the early Nineties when the very first Micra was manufactured. Its arrival signalled the construction of an entirely new production line transforming Sunderland into a multi-model, high volume facility.

The first Micra to be introduced to the UK was the model designated ‘K11’. It quickly won universal acclaim from customers all over Europe, and in 1993 became the first Japanese car to win the coveted ‘European Car of the Year’ award.

Sunderland went on to produce nearly 1.4 million K11 Micras over the next ten years until it was replaced by the new ‘K12’ Micra in 2002.

The K12 proved equally as popular and Sunderland produced more than 100,000 units within the first six months of production – a faster rate than for any previous model.

The K12’s striking looks were not only a hit with buyers as the car received a European Design Award at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show for its “individual character” and for “mixing functionality with innovation”.

Sunderland manufactured nearly one million K12s in eight years of production, and this included the plant’s first ‘open top’ car in the shape of the 2005 C+C (Coupe + Convertible).

C+C’s fully automated roof was fitted on a dedicated sub assembly line for the four years it was in production during which the plant manufactured more than 31,000 units.

In total, Sunderland has manufactured 2,368,704 Micras since 1992, which is more than 40% of all cars built at the plant since production began in 1986.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, VP Manufacturing UK said: “I think everyone will be sorry to see the last Micra come off the line. When you produce a model for as long as we have produced Micra, it almost becomes part of your plant’s identity.

“There is no doubt that Micra has been a tremendous success for us and a production run of well over two million units is astounding, but like all plants we are constantly changing and updating our model mix.

“Micra’s departure frees up capacity on our lines meaning we can now look forward to producing the Juke in August.

“Although Micra is a tough act to follow, Juke is a very exciting prospect. By combining the best attributes from a compact SUV and a sports car, it will inject something truly original into the small car segment.”

Production supervisor Keith Watson worked on the very first Micra produced in Sunderland in 1992. He added: “It’s sad to see Micra production end in Sunderland, but we have a fantastic product replacing it in Juke. It’s quite an achievement for the plant to think there are well over 2 million Sunderland-built Micras out there.”

The model’s departure from Sunderland does not signal an end to the Micra story. The all-new model, which had its global unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March, will be produced in several locations globally.

This includes the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new plant in Chennai, India which started Micra production in May and has already begun supplying the domestic Indian market. Exports, including to Europe, will begin in September this year.

As the first true crossover and a halo model for Nissan, the only thing that could enhance the Murano is the pace, economy and efficiency of diesel power – and that’s now exactly what it’s got!

Available to order in the UK now, the Murano dCi benefits from a diesel engine specifically engineered for Europe with significant input from engineers at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE).

The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine has been totally revised with extensive changes designed to provide the perfect balance of performance and efficiency for the Murano. This is combined with a revised 6 speed automatic transmission providing Adaptive Shift Control for the optimum gear and helping to reduce CO2 emissions by 5.0g/km through lower transmission friction and Clear Neutral Control. It is now fully compliant with tough Euro5 emissions standards, and develops 11% more power and torque than before. The headline figures are 190PS and 450Nm at just 2,000rpm.

An all-important benefit of the new diesel unit is efficiency, and with 35.3mpg economy in the combined cycle and 210g/km CO2 emissions the Murano is more appealing than ever. This is helped by improved aerodynamics and a first ever on Murano, an electric power regeneration system.

The importance of refinement hasn’t been forgotten either, with the very latest engineering techniques employed to ensure the Murano’s premium cabin environment remains uninterrupted. Among the improvements are a change from chain to belt drive for the power steering pump to reduce noise while a fifth engine mounting point has been added to make the Murano as quiet as possible. At the same time, extra sound absorbing material has been added to the engine bay to reduce noise intrusion into the cabin even further.

Nissan’s designers have also taken the opportunity to combine the need for cooling airflow to the diesel engine and radiators with a styling makeover for the Murano’s front-end. A new grille and bumper design reinforce the striking looks that have long blended the dynamic pleasure of a sports car with the cabin comfort of an SUV.

This combination of abilities is reflected on the spec sheets. Murano comes fully loaded with everything from 20-inch alloy wheels, power tailgate and colour rear and kerbside cameras all fitted as standard. Murano also features Nissan Connect Premium satellite navigation system with 7” touchscreen, HDD 9.3 Gb music server, ipod, Bluetooth and aux connectivity combined with premium 11 speaker BOSE system and the option of rear seat DVD entertainment system.

In addition, the kit list includes rear privacy glass, bi-xenon headlamps, cruise control and Murano’s signature electrically folding rear seats, which can be raised or lowered easily and conveniently from the luggage area.

All this comes wrapped up in the Murano diesel package priced at a highly competitive £37,795. Orders are being taken now ready for the first deliveries in September.

Now firmly established as the pioneer and leader of the crossover market, Nissan’s improved Murano shares many of the cross-segment abilities that have made the Qashqai and the seven-seat Qashqai+2 so successful in the family hatchback sector. What’s more, Nissan’s crossover dominance is set to be further underlined by the arrival, later this year, of the Juke, Nissan’s new compact crossover.

Nissan International SA today announced that the all-electric Nissan LEAF will be priced at under 30,000 Euros (25,641 Pounds) after incentives in most of its European launch markets – about the same as a comparably-equipped diesel or hybrid vehicle.

The company also announced specific prices for the UK, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Portugal, the four initial European launch markets for the Nissan LEAF. Reservations will begin in July.

The Nissan LEAF is a compact, zero-emission five-passenger family car that comes fully equipped with features such as air conditioning, satellite navigation, a parking camera, a quick charge socket and innovative smart-phone connectivity.

“Nissan leads the industry by being the first automaker to offer an affordable zero-emission car. It’s a pure electric vehicle, with no tailpipe emissions and very low running costs. Nissan LEAF may look similar to a compact family car, but its smoothness, acceleration and handling will surprise and impress drivers and passengers alike,” said Simon Thomas, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Nissan International SA.

In the United Kingdom, the purchase price of the Nissan LEAF would be 23,350 Pounds (27,471 Euros)after government incentives. The price, which includes the battery, is 28,350 Pounds (33,353 Euros) before incentives. The UK government recently announced that it will refund 25 percent of the purchase price of a pure electric vehicle, up to a limit of 5,000 Pounds. The Nissan LEAF goes on sale in the UK in February 2011.

An array of other incentives can further defray the costs and increase the benefits of owning the Nissan LEAF. In the UK, EV customers benefit from advantages including zero vehicle excise duty and zero company car tax for five years. This, combined with significant savings in fuel costs of about 600 Euros (513 Pounds) on average annually in Europe versus a traditional car, makes the Nissan LEAF an affordable and compelling proposition.

The purchase price in the Netherlands will be 32,839 Euros (28,068 Pounds). Here, subsidies will take the form of zero vehicle registration and road taxes, resulting in tax savings of 6,000 Euros for private car owners and 19,000 Euros for company car owners over five years. Sales in the Netherlands begin this December.

The price in the Republic of Ireland is 29,995 Euros (25,637 Pounds) after 5,000 Euros in government incentives. Buyers will be exempt from vehicle registration tax, which can amount to as much as 3,800 Euros on a C-segment car. Sales in Ireland begin in February next year.

The price in Portugal is 29,955 Euros (25,603 Pounds) after 5,000 Euros in government incentives. Portuguese customers owning the Nissan LEAF benefit from road tax exemption. Sales in Portugal begin this December.

Nissan has decided to launch in these countries first due to significant government incentives for electric cars, and the ongoing development of charging infrastructure for their successful adoption. By the end of next year, Nissan LEAF will be available in every major Western European country.

“The Renault-Nissan Alliance is investing over four billion Euros to lead the auto industry in electric vehicles, with eight products across three brands,” said Simon Thomas. “This investment includes five battery plants and seven confirmed assembly plants, including Sunderland in the UK. This reflects the strong commitment the alliance has made to electric vehicles and our determination to lead the market.”

To ensure a place in line when Nissan begins taking reservations in the four initial markets, customers in those countries should pre-register on their local Nissan consumer website.*

In addition to purchasing the car outright, customers will also be able to buy the car on a Nissan finance plan. Details of the all-inclusive acquisition method will also be released in July.

Now available to order, the new Pathfinder and Navara offer far more 4×4 for the money with key enhancements of real customer benefit.

Highly competitive pricing starts at £19,807* (on the road) for the Navara Acenta King Cab. Navara Tekna, available only in Double Cab form, costs from £24,389.50 (on the road) for the manual or £25,682 (on the road) for the automatic. Extra standard features on the Navara Acenta include side and curtain airbags, ESP stability control, front fog lights, new seat cloth, additional cabin storage. On the Navara Tekna, pop-up headlight washers, speed limiter, power fold mirrors, MP3 AUX input all come as standard.

The Pathfinder Acenta 2.5 dCi 190 is priced at £28,495 (on the road). The fully equipped Pathfinder Tekna is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission (£31,595) or a 5-speed automatic (£33,095). Extra standard features on the Pathfinder Acenta include Fine Vision combimeter for a crisp view of the instrument dials, new centre console and lidded storage box and MP3 AUX input. On the Pathfinder Tekna, Nissan Connect Premium HDD, a sat nav infotainment system with 7-inch colour touch screen, comes as standard as well as new 18-inch wheels, headlight washers, speed limiter and new centre console with wood finish.

More performance, more economy, lower emissions

In its latest guise in both Pathfinder and Navara, the 4-cylinder diesel provides peak power of 190 PS (188 bhp) with peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb ft), figures which represent an 11% improvement over the previous model. For Navara, this represents class leading power and torque without compromising on fuel consumption or emissions. Either vehicle is now capable of doing 0-62mph in just 10.7 seconds.

Both models have significantly improved performance and fuel economy – fuel consumption improves and CO2 emissions come down, by an average of 15%. For both Pathfinder and Navara, official combined fuel economy is boosted from the outgoing models’ 28.8mpg to 33.2mpg, while CO2 is cut from 264g/km to 224g/km. A drop in CO2 emissions means that Pathfinder drops two tax bands in line with rivals with less power and Navara can include efficiency amongst its long list of attributes.

New look and feel inside and out

A subtle reshaping has resulted in a new bonnet and grille, along with redesigned headlights – now complete with their own pop up washer system (Tekna models only).

Two new body colours are available: Slate and, for the Navara only, Electric Blue.

Inside, enhanced styling embraces new designs, trim and fabrics for the door panels, centre console and seats. There’s a clearer new dashboard display, extra concealed storage tray and reworked switchgear. A simple-to-operate speed limiter has also been incorporated into the cruise control of the Tekna models.

Nissan Connect Premium, a whole new “infotainment” system, replaces both the previous DVD satnav and CD autochanger. The Hard Disk Drive-based system brings state-of-the-art navigation, music storage and playback. The 40 GB satnav offers 3D street-level mapping and extensive POI (points of interest) data. The 9 GB music centre will automatically download and store music from the equivalent of 250 CDs, while also offering full iPod connectivity and a facility for wireless audio streaming using the built-in Bluetooth. The system even includes a reversing camera. And if you get tired of looking backwards you can always pop in a DVD to watch (but only while the vehicle is stationary).

Nissan Connect Premium is standard on Pathfinder Tekna and optional on Navara Tekna at a cost of just £1,300+VAT, the same price as the considerably simpler DVD satnav of the outgoing model.

New V6 diesel engine

A new direct injection V6 turbodiesel has been developed to deliver even higher levels of performance and capability with strong economy, competitive emissions and class-leading refinement.

Power output is 231 PS while the torque output of 550 Nm leads the class. Better still, peak torque is achieved from as low as 1,750 rpm and is available all the way to 2,500 rpm, while as much as 500 Nm is available from a mere 1,500 rpm. Idle speed is an exceptionally low 650 rpm with none of the vibrations and noise usually associated with a diesel.

Prices for the V6 diesel engine will be announced at a later date with deliveries starting in September.
