The new Porsche Boxster arrives in the UK this spring offering open-top driving enthusiasts a new generation of the benchmark roadster. The Boxster has an all-new lightweight body, new flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and evolutionary styling.

Considerably lower weight, a longer wheelbase, widened track and larger wheels significantly enhance the driving dynamics of the mid-engined sports car. These attributes, combined with many other new features including electro-mechanical power steering, result in the new Boxster not only offering superior performance but also up to 15 per cent greater fuel efficiency.

Distinctive roadster styling

The styling of the new Boxster clearly signals the unique driving experience on offer; with shorter front and rear overhangs, significantly forward-shifted windscreen, a flatter silhouette and expressive edges. Inside, the passengers are enclosed by a new fully electric hood, which now dispenses with a compartment lid for the convertible top when stowed. The interior design offers the driver and passenger more space and reflects the new Porsche outline, while the distinctive centre console – originating in the Carrera GT – further improves ergonomics.

Charismatic flat-six ‘boxer’ engines

The new generation Porsche roadster makes its debut in the classic Porsche pairing of Boxster and Boxster S. Both derivatives are powered by charismatic flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, the efficiency of which is further enhanced by electrical system recuperation, thermal management and start/stop function.

The new power unit fitted in the Boxster delivers 265 hp (195 kW) from a 2.7 litre displacement – 10 hp more than its larger capacity predecessor. Technically, it is now based on the 3.4-litre engine of the Boxster S. The 3.4-litre now delivers 315 hp (232 kW), 5 hp more than before. Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, with the seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an option.

Porsche Intelligent Performance

Both models achieve their best fuel consumption and acceleration performance with the PDK.

Fuel consumption for the Porsche Boxster with PDK is 36.7mpg, and 35.3mpg for the Boxster S. With gear changes achieved without interruption to the flow of power, the Boxster sprints from

0- 62mph in 5.7 sec, the Boxster S in just 5.0 sec.

To enhance the driving dynamics further, the Sport Chrono Package option is offered on the Boxster, featuring Dynamic Transmission Mounts for the first time. Also new in the Boxster is the option of Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear limited slip differential.

The new Porsche Boxster in the UK

Built in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, the new Porsche Boxster will go on sale in the UK from April 28. The Boxster is priced from £37,589, and from £45,384 for the Boxster S.

The Boxster features an Alcantara interior, 18” alloy wheels, Auto stop/start and Sports mode, remote control hood operation, audio CD with 7-inch colour touch-screen control, a universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity and a three year warranty.

The Boxster S adds 19-inch alloy wheels, partial leather interior and Bi-Xenon headlights in addition to the power advantage of the larger 3.4-litre engine.

All new Boxster customers can also explore the potential of their car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

On sale in March 2012, the new Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet offers sporting drivers the option to enjoy the renowned dynamic qualities and iconic design of the 911 Coupe combined with the added versatility and driving pleasure offered by its folding convertible roof.

The 911 Cabriolet naturally shares its new, high tech aluminium-steel body with the Coupe, and the convertible extends this innovation to its all-new, unique hood. When raised, the design of the hood ensures the iconic 911 roof line is retained in its entirety. Intelligent lightweight design, including the use of magnesium in the hood frame, ensures reduced weight for increased responsiveness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. As is the case with the Coupe model, the new 911 Cabriolet is significantly lighter overall than its predecessor.

Combined with lower weight, the new 911 Cabriolet models share the longer wheelbase, wider front track and the new electro-mechanical power steering of their Coupe siblings, ensuring the open-roofed models offer more sporting driving characteristics, greater precision and agility compared to the prior model. Likewise, front and rear overhangs are shorter, maintaining the compact footprint that has been a longstanding 911 attribute. In addition, there are further standard or optional active control systems available that further enhance the driving dynamics.

The new 911 Cabriolet models offer the same charismatic line-up of rear-mounted, flat-six engines as the Coupé equivalents of the benchmark sportscar. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet features a 3.4-litre engine generating 350 hp (257 kW), driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed manual transmission. The Carrera S Cabriolet offers a 3.8-litre engine developing 400 hp (294 kW), also coupled to a seven-speed manual transmission as standard. Consequently, the open-top 911 models share the characteristic efficiency for which the 911 is renowned; both models return over 28.0 mpg Combined (NEDC).

The 911 Carrera Cabriolet offers the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission as an option, delivering even lower fuel consumption and shorter acceleration times.

The 911 Carrera Cabriolet models go on sale in the UK on March 3 2012. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet is priced from £79,947, the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet from £89,740.

Fitted to every 911 Carrera Cabriolet is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

Dynamic and agile chassis with lowered, air suspension and larger brakes as standard

Distinctive exterior appearance with Turbo design cues and black styling details

On sale February 2012, priced from £90,409

The new Panamera GTS is the purist member of the Porsche Gran Turismo family. A powerful V8 engine with even more intense responsiveness sits under the bonnet, the sporting chassis has been tuned for added dynamism and agility and the distinctive exterior styling clearly signals these focused intentions.

Engine tuned for higher performance

The heart of the new Panamera GTS is its uprated 4.8-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine benefiting from numerous modifications to give it even better performance. The 30 hp higher engine output and 20 Nm greater torque (compared with the power units in the Panamera S/4S), results in the GTS producing 430 hp at 6,700 rpm and 520 Nm at 3,500 rpm.

For maximum performance, the muscular V8 drives all four wheels via a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission. The four seater GTS has a kerbweight of 1,920kg and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.5 secs, and on to a top speed of 179mph. Combined fuel consumption on the NEDC is 25.9mpg, and CO2 emissions are 256g/km.

At the push of a button, driver and passengers can hear the engine of the GTS ‘breathing’; the Sound Symposer directs intake noise into the interior at the push of a button. This is achieved by an acoustic channel picking up the intake vibrations between the throttle valve and air filter. The acoustic channel incorporates a membrane that transmits the vibrations as an engine sound into the A-pillar. A controllable valve located in front of the membrane enables the Sound Symposer to be activated or deactivated by means of the Sport button.

The exhaust gases exit the Panamera GTS through the standard sports exhaust system, which comes with larger pipe diameters to reduce back pressure. This also contributes to the increased engine output: the sports exhaust system features two tuning flaps, which expose additional exhaust openings, thereby emitting an even more powerful sound. The flaps are controlled by means of a switch in the centre console, which features a “last mode” function that remembers the last setting and restores it when the engine is started.

Sporting chassis with lowered air suspension as standard

The Panamera GTS features a tuned chassis boasting performance-oriented options fitted as standard. For example, adaptive air suspension combined with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) increases both comfort and driving dynamics by adjusting the spring rate and electrically adjusting the damping system, combined with a self-levelling height adjustment function.

With the air suspension at its normal level the Panamera GTS sits 10 mm lower than the other models in the Panamera range and its damping is designed to be tauter, reinforcing the sporting personality. Dynamic performance is further enhanced by the combination of 19-inch diameter Panamera Turbo wheels, 5 mm rear wheel spacers and larger brake discs from the Turbo – recognisable by their red brake callipers.

Sport Chrono Plus Package for individual sportiness

The Panamera GTS is equipped with the Sport Chrono package as standard, which in addition to the Normal and Sport modes offers the Sport Plus programme as well. Specific characteristics of the Panamera are further accentuated depending on which mode is selected, which tailors the responsiveness of the engine, transmission and chassis according to the driver’s preference.

In the ultimate Sport Plus mode, the adaptive air suspension lowers the vehicle to the low setting and switches to a harder spring rate. The rear spoiler angle of attack also changes to the performance-oriented setting.

Options for even greater driving dynamics: PDCC with PTV Plus

Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is the final level of development of the Panamera GTS chassis, twinned with the electronically-controlled rear axle differential lock and PTV Plus. PDCC limits body roll when cornering by using active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axle. This results in improved agility, performance and comfort.

The driving dynamics benefits of PDCC are enhanced further by Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). The system works by varying the torque distribution to the rear wheels and by employing an electronically-regulated rear limited slip differential, which manages traction as well as optimising the car’s steering precision.

Distinctive exterior design inspired by the Turbo

Identified by its large air intake openings, the GTS features the standard front section of the Sport-Design package of the Panamera Turbo which emphasises the sporting character as well as ensuring the air supply for the engine. This sense of purpose is matched at the rear by the adaptive four-way rear spoiler from the Panamera Turbo. At speeds above 127 mph it generates downforce on the rear axle, thereby ensuring stable driving safety at high speeds.

The appearance of the Panamera GTS is characterised by numerous black exterior styling details. The high-gloss black exterior package comprises the side window trim, the decorative trim on the rear lid, the headlight washer unit cover, the rear diffuser and the side air outlet panels, lends a particular sporting touch. In combination with the black side skirts, the tail end and the matt black tailpipes of the sports exhaust system the result is clear-cut and striking.

A further point of differentiation is Bi-Xenon headlights with black inner bezels. These feature four LED daytime running lights each, which – as with the Panamera Turbo – are located in the main headlight for a distinctive look. The optional body colour of Carmine Red, available exclusively for the Panamera GTS, emphasises the overall sportiness of the model and provides an ideal contrast with the black exterior accessories.

Sporting character behind the wheel

An ambience of leather and Alcantara – with a choice of five interior colours – ensures the personality of the Panamera GTS is expressed throughout the interior. The centre panels of the adaptive 18-way adjustable sports seats, the upper sections of the door armrests and front centre console armrest and roof lining are in Alcantara.

The SportDesign steering wheel with PDK shift paddles and twelve o’clock marking on the steering wheel rim combines dynamic looks and sporting functionality. To ensure clear differentiation, the stainless steel front door entry guards feature ‘Panamera GTS’ lettering. ‘GTS’ lettering is also shown on the instrument cluster and on the embroidered headrests.

Furthermore, the agility of the Panamera GTS is made apparent via the lateral and longitudinal acceleration display in front of the driver. The display on the right hand side of the instrument cluster – and on the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system – relays information regarding the instantaneous acceleration, thereby reflecting the potential of the driving performance of the Panamera GTS.

Porsche has put together special optional equipment packages married with a black interior, exclusively for the Panamera GTS. The decorative stitching on the foot mats, top of the dashboard, upper edge of the door, armrest, door trim and centre console, the door closing handle along with the seat stitching are executed in Carmine Red or GT Silver. The embroidered ‘GTS’ lettering on the headrests, and seat belts also in the corresponding colour, complete the overall impression.

On sale February 2012

The Porsche Panamera GTS will be on sale in the UK from February 2012, priced from £90,409. Every Panamera, including the new GTS, has a high level of standard specification that includes front and rear ParkAssist, Porsche Communication Management with touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, cruise control and a three year warranty.

Fitted to every Panamera GTS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language exudes power and elegance. The unmistakable silhouette still catches the eye while incorporating new, exciting contours and precisely designed details; a 100mm longer wheelbase for improved stability and greater interior space; front and rear overhangs are shorter, maintaining the compact footprint that has been a longstanding 911 attribute; the sporting stance is emphasised by the lower roof line and a wider front track increases on-road presence further still while raising the renowned chassis dynamics.

The rear-mounted, flat six cylinder engine is an equally symbolic component of the 911 identity; and behind the rear axle of the new car lies an uprated range of powerful, efficient and evocative ‘boxer’ engines. The 911 Carrera is powered by a new 3.4-litre engine developing 350 hp, and the Carrera S features a 400 hp version of the familiar 3.8-litre. These new engines offer performance improvements for both models. The 3.4-litre Carrera with PDK accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.6 sec, 0.1 sec quicker than the prior model. Pressing the Sport Plus button on the optional Sport Chrono Pack cuts that to 4.4 sec. The 3.8-litre Carrera S with PDK can accelerate from 0- 62 mph in 4.3 sec (Sport Plus 4.1 sec), 0.2sec quicker than its predecessor.

All-new lightweight body
Principle among the innovative steps forwards is the all-new, lightweight body, featuring intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction. It is responsible for a significant proportion of the vehicle weight reduction of up to 45 kg. The body structure also delivers significantly greater rigidity, and aerodynamic optimisation – including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler – has reduced the lift generated by the new 911 Carrera while retaining an impressive overall drag factor.

Innovative chassis technology
That the new 911 offers better acceleration in a straight line goes without saying, but it also offers top performance at an unprecedented level across the entire dynamic repertoire. In addition to the longer wheelbase, the greater agility, precision and driving stability are based, among other things, on the wider front track, a new rear axle and new electro-mechanical power steering.

Depending on the model, there are other standard or optional active control systems available as well that further enhance the driving dynamics. That is especially true for the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilisation system, available for the first time on the 911 Carrera S. The system reduces body roll when cornering, with the result that the tyres are always in the optimal position relative to the road surface and thus able to transmit higher lateral forces. Consequently, maximum cornering speeds are increased, and even faster lap times on racing circuits are possible.

Exterior design
The familiar athletic appearance of the 911 is given further dynamism with a 100mm longer wheelbase, reduced height, and up to 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. At the same time, the typically compact exterior dimensions have been retained. Seen from the front, the eye is drawn to the trademark wide-arched wings, emphasising the wider front track and making the new 911 Carrera models adopt a particularly sporting stance on the road. The redesigned exterior mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door and not as before on the mirror triangle. Not only is this aerodynamically advantageous, it also emphasises the new design line and visual impression of width.

Interior design
To complement the modern exterior, the Porsche designers created an interior style which takes its cue from that of the Porsche Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated with the cockpit thanks to the centre console rising up to the front with the high-mounted shift lever – or PDK gear selector – located close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. Classic Porsche style elements are also to be found inside, just as they are on the outside. For example, the instrument cluster with five round instruments, with the central dial naturally the rev counter. On the right is a new, high resolution multi-function screen, just one of the comfort features added to meet evolving customer demands.

Porsche Intelligent Performance
Setting the standard in its class, as it has for generations, the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S raise the performance and efficiency standard to new levels. Fuel consumption and emissions of all versions are up to 16 per cent lower compared with its predecessors. Among other things, this is achieved by systems and functions such as auto start/stop, thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and – in conjunction with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) – a ‘coasting’ function that decouples the engine for enhanced fuel efficiency when the throttle is closed.

The new electro-mechanical power steering system offers not only the typical precision and feedback expected of a Porsche, but also helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. For example, the 911 Carrera with the new 350 hp (257 kW) 3.4-litre direct injection engine and optional PDK returns 34.4mpg Combined based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) – 6mpg less than its predecessor. Also, at 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to sit below 200 g/km CO2. In the case of the Carrera S, with its 400 hp 3.8-litre direct injection engine, economy when paired with the optional PDK is increased by 14 per cent, or 5 mpg, to 32.4mpg Combined despite 15 hp more power. That equates to CO2 emissions of 205 g/km.

Evidently, it has therefore been possible in the new 911 Carrera to extend yet further the span of apparently contradictory attributes such as performance and efficiency, sportiness and everyday usability that has always typified the Porsche 911. It could be said that the new 911 Carrera is thus more of a 911 than ever.

In the UK from December 2011
The new Porsche 911 Carrera celebrates its world premiere at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show and the new 911 models will be in UK Porsche Centres from December 17 2011.

Electric-powered rear and four wheel-drive variants of the Porsche Boxster E roadster sparked interest last week at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Berlin.

Porsche was demonstrating its Boxster E prototypes to a wide audience of representatives from politics, industry, trade and research at this global forum for sustainable mobility in the German capital. Around a sporting circuit, the Porsche showcased the Boxster E sports car concept; exhibiting the combination of innovation, performance and chassis responsiveness that is characteristic of the marque, and follows similar ground-breaking initiatives; the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car, 918 Spyder super sports car and 918 RSR concept.

The Boxster E prototypes are being used as part of the “Model Region Electro-Mobility Stuttgart” 1 large-scale trial to explore the everyday practicality of all-electric vehicles and how they are used, especially in terms of driving and battery charging. What the researchers at Porsche are looking for is an understanding of the requirements that will shape tomorrow’s products, the future direction of Porsche Intelligent Performance and how to integrate electric vehicles into the infrastructure.

Mid-engine design provides perfect foundations
Thanks to its design as a mid-engine sports car, the Porsche Boxster is the ideal vehicle platform for conducting realistic trials with electric-drive systems. The open-top two-seater car is very light, enabling the new components that are the electric motor, battery and high-voltage technology to be accommodated within the vehicle in a crash-proof way. Together with the low drag, this reduces driving resistance for optimal range. Also of importance for a Porsche sports car, even one that is electrically-driven, is the high driving dynamics potential, not least as a consequence of the balanced axle-load distribution intrinsic to the mid-engine design.

Boxster E with four wheel-drive
The Boxster E is an all-electric vehicle without any additional combustion engine on board. Propulsion is provided by two independent electric motors with constant mesh gearboxes that act on the front and rear axles. The rear drive unit comprising motor and transmission, together with the power electronics for controlling the electric motor is located where the manual transmission and exhaust system are accommodated in the conventional Boxster. In the front end, the space vacated by the 64-litre fuel tank, now redundant, is occupied by the second drive unit. The power electronics unit in the adjacent luggage compartment serves the front axle electric motor. The Boxster E thereby features all-wheel drive without mechanical transmission of power. To ensure maximum driving stability and traction, a central electric control unit looks after the synchronisation of the two electric motors and controls the drive torque distribution to the front and rear axle.

The two electric motors develop a total power output of 180 kW and a maximum total torque of 540 Nm at a maximum engine speed of approximately 12,000 rpm. That means that the two electric motors in tandem deliver significantly higher drive power than what is available from present day hybrid vehicle electric power units. As well as the all-electric drive of the Boxster E producing zero tailpipe emissions, it also offers a completely new form of Porsche driving pleasure. Maximum torque of the electric drive kicks in virtually from the first turn of the engine. The Boxster E moves almost silently while at the same time developing powerful propulsion from the very outset.

The two motors enable the two-seater to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.5 seconds from a standing start. Its top speed, limited to 200 km/h (124 mph) is achieved without any gear change at all – whether automatic or manual. The high power output of the two motors offers a second advantage: it means more recovered power is available because more energy can be recovered during braking. This increases efficiency of the drive unit.

Boxster E with rear wheel drive
In the case of the two other Boxster E models with rear wheel drive there is no front electric motor, therefore delivering a power output of 90 kW and a rated torque of 270 Nm. This model can sprint from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.8 seconds, with a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).

Active Sound Design
As all Boxster E models are comparatively quiet on the road, Porsche engineers have designed an Active Sound Design system that provides drivers with acoustic feedback as well as alerting pedestrians and other road users.

A new expression of Porsche Intelligent Performance
Irrespective of variant, the heart of every Boxster E is manufactured by Porsche. The lithium-iron-phosphate based traction battery is fitted in place of the combustion engine. Each of its cells has a nominal voltage of 3.3 V and an individual capacity of 20 Ah. Based on the NEDC, the combined energy from 440 individual cells is good for approximately 170 kilometres (107 miles) of driving in the Boxster E with its ready-for-the-road weight of a mere 1,600 kg.

For an overall weight of 341 kg, the battery’s energy content is 29 kWh of which for inherent physical reasons approximately 26 kWh are available for use – an outstanding performance for a battery.

Its maximum power output is 240 kW, or 60 kilowatts more than the all wheel-drive Boxster E draws under full load. The battery and power unit components are connected to two water cooling circuits. As with the conventional power unit, the heat exchangers are accommodated behind the front air intakes.

The battery is anchored to the same points on the body structure as the combustion engine in the Boxster S. There are numerous advantages to this, especially in the event of a crash, because by using the same load paths as in the Boxster S, the battery is optimally retained within the vehicle while at the same time being protected from damage by the surrounding body structure thanks to its central position within the vehicle. As with the combustion engine in the production car, the traction battery is installed in the Boxster E from below and can be swapped out very quickly if so required. This is also facilitated by special motor sport fasteners that enable the battery to be disconnected from the cooling circuit without air getting into the system.

Charging the Boxster E
The traction battery is charged via a charging cable. Any conventional socket can be used as an energy source. The charging port on the vehicle features an illuminated ring and, as with any Porsche sports car, the vehicle is ‘refuelled’ (in this case, recharged) at the front end. The charger is accommodated at the front of the car. It converts alternating current from the socket into direct current, enabling the traction battery to store the electric energy. Its charging capacity is a maximum of 3.3 kW meaning that it takes approximately nine hours for a full charge. The charging time can however be reduced using a rapid charging function. There is enough space left over for luggage in the front storage compartment despite the electronic components; the rear luggage compartment of the Boxster E remains unchanged.

Behind the wheel
It goes without saying that all of the important safety and comfort features of the production model are replicated in the Boxster E. The new brake system enables an optimal melding of the braking forces of the electrical generators and the mechanical brake system, delivered via lightweight Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The electrically-powered air conditioning compressor accommodated in the front luggage compartment ensures comfortable temperatures inside the vehicle.

Not only are the clutch pedal and gearshift lever absent in the Boxster E, there is no rev counter either. In its place is a special ‘E-Power meter’ in the central instrument cluster display. A swing to the right indicates power call-off, and to the left, power recovery. Recuperation – namely the recovery of energy by using the electric motors as generators – can be modified by means of the push buttons in the steering wheel; the effect is akin to an on-demand engine brake. Otherwise, when the driver lifts his foot off the accelerator, the Boxster E simply sails on, using the moving vehicle’s kinetic energy. Among its other functions, the instrument cluster’s right-hand TFT display acts as an intelligent range management system, displaying useful driving information: the range remaining or how many miles can be gained by switching off the air conditioning system.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS combines a 408 hp 3.8-litre flat six engine with intelligent all-wheel drive that delivers a further exhilarating dimension to the dynamics of the iconic rear-engined sports car. The 911 was first offered with four-wheel drive in 1989 and the drivetrain has been a popular option ever since. Now, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS broadens customer choice in 2011, building on the success of the two-wheel drive Carrera GTS that went on sale in December last year. The 911 Carrera 4 GTS power unit has its origins in the 3.8-litre, six-cylinder from the Carrera S.

A comprehensive redesign of the intake duct has added 23 hp, taking the peak power output to 408 hp at 7,300 rpm. The improvement in the engine’s breathing not only increases peak power output but also its flexibility thanks to a more generous torque curve in the lower and middle engine speed range. For example, 320 Nm is available from as low as 1,500 rpm; overall, the six-cylinder engine delivers its peak torque of 420 Nm across a broad engine speed range from 4,200 – 5,600 rpm.

Fitted in combination with the uprated engine is a sports exhaust system which produces a distinctly sporty sound. Consequently, the new Carrera 4 GTS has an unmistakable acoustic signature, and this unique character is supplemented by exhaust tailpipes finished in a distinctive black surface design.

While the engine is identical to that used in the two-wheel drive Carrera GTS, the four-wheel drive version features Porsche Traction Management (PTM) to offer even more driving stability, traction and agile handling. The PTM achieves this by directing the optimal proportion of the engine torque to the front wheels via a multiple-plate clutch. Furthermore, the Carrera 4 GTS features a limited-slip rear differential as standard which contributes to the dynamic performance of the electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system, and indicates the driving focus of this new model.

The Carrera 4 GTS is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual transmission, and the Coupé model sprints from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds, the Cabriolet in 4.8 seconds. If equipped with the optional Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed double-clutch transmission, an additional 0.2 seconds can be trimmed respectively from these acceleration times.

While driving dynamics is the prime source of attraction with a Porsche, as is typical of the Stuttgart marque, running costs are also engineered to have broad appeal. By applying the principles of Porsche Intelligent Performance, the fuel economy of these new all-wheel 911 models is identical to that of the equivalent 385 hp 911 Carrera 4S models. For example, the Carrera 4 GTS Coupé returns 26.9 mpg Combined based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) with CO2 emissions of 247 g/km.

Visually, the new Carrera 4 GTS models differ in points of detail from earlier variants with rear-wheel drive. In addition to the designation on the doors and rear lid, the distinguishing characteristic of all models with all-wheel drive is the additional reflective stripe between the tail lights. As well as the characteristic all-wheel drive wide body style, increased rear track width is added, a specification that is unique to all GTS models.

In numerous other details, the GTS models differ both visually and technically from the other Carrera models. For example, they run on 19 inch RS Spyder alloy wheels in black with a central wheel bolt and gloss-finished rims; 305/30 ZR 19 tyres are fitted on the rear axle.

Additional visual features include the Sport-Design front apron with black painted spoiler lip and special side skirts, also in black. Inside, there are sports seats for driver and passenger. Typical of the GTS, the emphatically sporting black Alcantara trim on seat centre panels, steering wheel rim, gearshift and handbrake lever, door handles and door storage box lid and extension are offered as standard. Porsche Communication Management offering touch-screen controls for the audio system is a further highlight.

The 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupé and Cabriolet goes on sale in the UK in July 2011, priced from £83,145 for the Coupé and £90,024 as a Cabriolet.

Fitted to every 911 Carrera 4 GTS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The new Porsche Cayman S Black Edition combines performance and style, with a 3.4-litre flat-six engine tuned to deliver 330 hp, distinctive 19” alloy wheels finished in black and a luxurious interior. Production is limited to 500 examples worldwide, and UK sales begin in September.

The extra power is produced at 7,400 rpm (an additional 200 rpm vs the standard car), while the maximum torque remains unchanged at 370Nm at 4,750 rpm. This extra horsepower feeds directly through into the performance of the all-black mid-engined two–seater. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is improved by a tenth of a second to 5.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission, and to 5.0 seconds with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) respectively. With the Launch Control activated on the PDK Sport Chrono package option, acceleration improves further to 4.8 seconds.

The top speed of the Cayman S Black Edition is just over one mph faster than that of the Cayman S – 173 mph with the manual transmission and 172 mph with PDK. In line with the Porsche Intelligent Performance principles, fuel consumption of the Cayman S Black Edition remains identical to that of the standard car, despite the increase in horsepower. The Cayman S Black Edition with manual transmission returns 29.7mpg Combined, and 30.1mpg Combined with PDK. Likewise, CO2 remains 223g/km for the manual and 221g/km for the PDK.

Helping the dynamic performance of the Cayman S Black Edition further still are the lightweight Boxster Spyder wheels finished in black which, with a diameter of 19 inches, are one inch bigger than the standard Cayman S wheels and also half an inch wider than the optional 19 inch wheels offered on the Cayman S. The tyre sizes fitted are 235/35 ZR 19s on the front axle and 265/35 ZR 19s on the rear axle.

The Cayman S Black Edition features as standard Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, together with automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor.

The front seats are trimmed in black partial leather with a Porsche crest on the headrests, as well as a Sport Design steering wheel.
On sale from August 2011, the Porsche Panamera range extends with the introduction of the new Panamera Diesel, further enhancing the model’s appeal to UK customers. A luxury Gran Turismo, the Panamera Diesel is capable of taking four passengers in sporting comfort from Lands End to Loch Ness without refuelling.

Coping effortlessly with short bursts of speed and cross country touring, this long distance sporting performance is delivered by the smooth-running 3.0-litre V6 engine with a rated output of 250 hp (184 kW) achieved between 3,800 rpm and 4,400 rpm. The maximum torque of 550 Nm, available all the way from 1,750 rpm to 2,750 rpm, delivers high pulling power. It is exclusively available with rear-wheel drive and uses a highly efficient eight-speed Tiptronic S as standard. The six-cylinder turbo diesel engine powers the new Gran Turismo from 0 to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph.

The Panamera Diesel offers a highly appealing driving range of more than 745 miles on one 80-litre tank, emits 172 g/km and delivers a Combined fuel economy of 43.5mpg. With the optional lower rolling resistance tyres, efficiency improves further still, to 167 g/km and 44.8mpg on a Combined cycle.

The model’s 3.0-litre V6 engine is state of the art in diesel technology: common rail direct injection through piezo valves at a pressure of 2000 bar, turbocharging employing electrically controlled variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs) and emission control achieved by controlled exhaust gas recirculation, oxidation catalyst and particle filter.

Performance, generous torque and low consumption are accompanied by smooth running, reliability and low emissions. An additional contributing factor is the auto start/stop function, which is fitted as standard. Adaptive air suspension is available as an alternative to the standard steel spring suspension, to provide an even wider range of suspension settings to extend the driving qualities further still.

Through its proportions alone, the Panamera stands out clearly in its market segment: measuring 1931mm (76.0in) in width and 1418mm (55.8in) in height, the Panamera is both wider and lower than comparable four-door models. The unmistakable, sleek GT silhouette is created by an overall length of 4970mm (195.7in) and short, sporting overhangs front and rear. This new model can be recognised by the lettering ‘diesel’ on the front doors.

Porsche launches a new variant of the celebrated and successful racing pedigree 911 GT3 RS this July, offering even more power and greater performance. Limited to 600 vehicles worldwide, the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 takes all the attributes that have made the Porsche 911 GT3 a serial winner on the race track and moves the GT3 road car programme to a new, higher level.

The new model transmits thoroughbred motorsport technology through to its innermost core. The flat engine’s crankshaft has been lifted unchanged from the 911 GT3 RSR racing car’s six cylinder engine and the forged pistons’ connecting rods are made of titanium.

The flat six 4.0-litre sports engine, the biggest 911 engine ever, is also the most powerful naturally aspirated engine with 125 hp/litre. It achieves its maximum power of 500 hp at 8,250 revs per minute and delivers its maximum torque of 460 Nm at 5,750 rpm.

This impressive performance continues on track, this limited edition model achieves a Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap time of 7:27 minutes. The 911 GT3 4.0, available exclusively with a six-speed manual sports transmission, sprints to 62 mph from a standing start in 3.9 seconds and, with its gearing designed for the racing circuit, takes it to the 124 mph (200 km/h) mark in under 12 seconds.

The driving dynamics of the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 are the result of meticulously coordinated details. In order to best exploit the increased power, the chassis settings of the new car have been revised. This includes the set-up of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), an electronic damper adjustment system that actively and continuously controls the individual damping forces for each wheel and the rear axle now features additional ball-joints for greater adaptability.

In addition to using the suspension components typically encountered in motor racing, weight reduction is also of supreme importance. Equipped as standard with light weight components such as bucket seats, bonnet and front wings made of carbon fibre, plastic rear windows and weight-optimised carpets, the two-seater’s ready-for-road weight is just 1,360 kg, delivering a power-to-weight ratio of 368 hp/tonne.

The limited edition 911 is painted Carrara White as standard and emphasises its proximity to motor racing by its dynamic appearance. Trademark characteristics are the wide track, the low ride height, the large rear wing with adapted side plates, the typical central twin tailpipe and the aerodynamically optimised body. The lateral front air deflection vanes, so-called ‘flics’, making their first appearance on a production Porsche, testify to the aerodynamic precision engineering. They create increased downforce on the front axle and, together with the steeply inclined rear wing, bring the vehicle into aerodynamic equilibrium. As a result, aerodynamic forces exert an additional 190kg at top speed, pushing the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 onto the road.

Inside, the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 features lightweight sports bucket seats in carbon fibre covered in black leather/red Alcantara with ‘RS 4.0’ in red on the headrests. The steering wheel and gear shift lever are also trimmed in Alcantara with red stitching. Carbon fibre door entry guards with ‘RS 4.0’ logos are fitted to each sill and a dashboard trim strip in carbon fibre with a ‘RS 4.0’ logo runs across the inside of the car above the glovebox lid. As is characteristic of the 911 GT3 RS, the Clubsport package – comprising half roll cage, seat belt harnesses, fire extinguisher, battery cut-off switch – is a standard feature of the 4.0 model.

The 911 GT3 RS 4.0 is limited to 600 examples worldwide and will go on sale in July 2011 priced from £128,466.

With the new Panamera Turbo S, Porsche is raising the bar for sporting four-door luxury cars. The new addition to the Gran Turismo range offers a unique combination of performance and efficiency, driving dynamics and comfort. The 4.8-litre, V8 twin-turbocharged engine delivers 550 hp (410 kW), an increase of ten per cent or 50 hp (37 kW) more than the Panamera Turbo. Torque also increases from 700 to 750 Nm and in the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo – and during kick-down in normal mode – the eight cylinder engine delivers 800 Nm courtesy of the over-boost function.

This uprated engine delivers record sprint times for the new top of the range Panamera. When using the Launch Control function, 0-62 mph is reached in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 191 mph possible. However, despite the increased performance, fuel consumption of the Panamera Turbo S remains at the moderate level of the Panamera Turbo at 24.6mpg Combined on the NEDC– an example of Porsche Intelligent Performance.

The increased performance compared with the Panamera Turbo can be attributed to two main enhancements. Improved turbochargers with titanium-aluminium turbine wheels and modified engine control management. The use of the innovative titanium-aluminium alloy reduces the weight of the turbine and compressor wheel. This results in a lower moment of inertia, and thus improved and more responsive acceleration.

The Porsche Panamera Turbo S boasts a comprehensive equipment level. In keeping with the sporting concept of this particularly high-performance Panamera, the Turbo S features several key driving dynamics control systems as standard. For example, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), an active roll stabilisation system, boosts cornering stability and thus enhances both driving dynamics and comfort in equal measure. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) applies a variable torque split to the rear wheels which, in combination with an electronically controlled rear limited slip differential, ensures superior traction and therefore greater agility in every driving situation. The Sport Chrono Package Turbo, which tunes the suspension settings and engine controls, makes the car even more sporting when the additional “Sport Plus” button is pressed. Completing the dynamic enhancements is a sports exhaust system that delivers a particularly emotive engine sound.

The distinct character of the new Panamera Turbo S is apparent not just in its performance, but is also reflected on the exterior. The 20-inch Turbo II alloy wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range and the adaptive extending four-way rear spoiler co-ordinated in the exterior colour fitted as standard contribute to an appropriately performance-oriented appearance. The fusion of exclusivity and sportiness is conveyed inside by the standard two-colour leather upholstery. Two new optional combinations of black/cream and agate grey/cream are offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S and will be available from the autumn.

The Panamera Turbo S goes on sale in June and is priced from £122,623. Fitted to every Panamera Turbo S is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The Panamera S Hybrid marks the beginning of a new chapter of Porsche Intelligent Performance, as well as continuing the success story of the four door Gran Turismo. Without sacrificing its sporting driving dynamics and elegant travel for four passengers, the new Panamera S Hybrid combines a total power output of 380 hp (279 kW) with CO2 emissions of just 159 g/km, achieving a performance ratio of 2.39 hp per g/ CO2 that is unbeaten in the UK car market.

In addition to offering 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph, the Panamera S Hybrid returns fuel economy of 30.4mpg Combined. These statistics position the Panamera S Hybrid as offering impressive levels of efficiency, achieved through a combination of clever engineering solutions under the skin and the use of lower rolling resistance tyres specially-developed by Michelin.

The range in purely electric mode is approximately 1.25 miles, with driving in this mode possible up to 53 mph, depending on the road and traffic conditions. The Porsche hybrid drive is also the only system in the world able to exploit additional consumption reserves thanks to its so-called ‘sailing’ function. During phases when no power is required from the combustion engine, ‘sailing’ entails switching off the engine and disengaging the drivetrain at speeds of up to 103 mph (Cayenne S Hybrid 97 mph).

The Panamera S Hybrid is driven by the same engine combination that has already proved itself in the Cayenne S Hybrid, a model which already accounts for a fifth of Cayenne sales in the UK. The main propulsion is provided by a supercharged three-litre V6 engine delivering 333 hp (245 kW) supported by a 47 hp (34 kW) electric motor. Both power units are capable of powering the Panamera S Hybrid either alone or in combination. The electric motor also operates as a generator and a starter. Together with the separating clutch, it forms the compact hybrid module located between the combustion engine and the transmission.

The electric motor is connected to a nickel metal hydride (NiMh) battery where the electrical energy recovered while braking and driving is stored. Power transmission is handled by the familiar eight-speed Tiptronic S, with a wide spread of ratios, as already fitted to the Cayenne.

Every Panamera has a high level of standard specification that includes leather interior, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Bi-Xenon headlights, front and rear ParkAssist, tyre pressure monitoring, automatic dimming rear view mirrors, Porsche Communication Management with touch-screen satellite navigation and audio controls, cruise control and a three year warranty. The Panamera S Hybrid also features adaptive air suspension as standard, plus the innovative display panel – already seen in the Cayenne Hybrid – that provides the driver with all the relevant information about the vehicle’s specific hybrid driving status.

With the introduction of the new hybrid, the Panamera range now comprises six different models with a choice of two- and four-wheel drive and four engines. This diversity echoes the evolving preferences of Porsche customers, and which the sales success of the Panamera is already confirming. Approximately 15 months after sales started, nearly 30,000 vehicles have been delivered worldwide, of which over 1,000 have been in the UK.

The Panamera S Hybrid goes on sale in the UK in June 2011, priced from £86,146. The low emissions of 159 g/km CO2 is of particular relevance to fleet and company car buyers as it sits under the Company Write Down Allowance threshold of 160g/km. This means for a company purchase, the price can be offset against tax at the rate of 20% per annum.

Fitted to every Panamera is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The Porsche Boxster S Black Edition combines the timeless appeal of the classic open-roofed roadster with a powerful engine and dramatic styling. Just 987 will be available worldwide, each one finished in black and with a range of special features that accentuate the driving dynamics and muscular appearance of the two-seater sportscar.

As is typical of a Porsche sportscar, at the heart of the Boxster S Black Edition beats a flat-six ‘boxer’ engine. Mounted in front of the rear axle behind the seats, the 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine is similar to that fitted to the Boxster S, with direct fuel injection for greater power and efficiency. In the Black Edition its output is 320 hp – 10 hp more than in the Boxster S. The revised engine reaches its rated power at 7,200 rpm, the Boxster S power pack at 6,400 rpm. Peak torque of 370 Nm – boosted by 10 Newton metres – is available at 4,750 rpm.

This increase in output and power equals more dynamics, and the Boxster S Black Edition underpins its leading position with a superior driving performance. With its standard six–speed manual transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than the Boxster S. This extra performance has not been achieved at the expense of fuel economy, however, for the Boxster S Black Edition contents itself with as much fuel as the Boxster S: 28.8 mpg Combined (NEDC).

As a consequence of the low centre of gravity provided by the flat-six engine, the Boxster chassis delivers an impressive level of agility. A decisive contribution to the enhanced driving dynamics of the Boxster S Black Edition is the particularly lightweight ten-spoke design alloy wheels, previously fitted to the Boxster Spyder, and which save 5kg overall. These are fitted with 235/35 ZR 19 tyres on the front axle and 265/35 ZR 19 on the rear.

When fitted with the seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, dynamics and efficiency are raised even further. This shortens acceleration times from 0-62 mph to 5.1 seconds, and in combination with the Sports Chrono Package Plus with launch control this can be lowered further still to 4.9 seconds. In comparison with the manual transmission, the intelligent gear shifting strategy of PDK lowers fuel consumption to 30 mpg Combined (NEDC) and, more significantly, reduces the CO2 emissions to 221 g/km; placing the Boxster S Black Edition in vehicle excise duty Band K.

The colour concept of the Boxster S Black Edition is consistent in every detail. The model lettering painted in black on the rear luggage compartment lid identifies the Black Edition as much as the embossed Black Edition model designation on the side of the fabric hood. The roll-over bars are painted in black, together with the rear side air intake grilles and the twin tailpipe of the exhaust system.

The black theme of the exterior is continued inside. The stainless steel door entry guards feature the “Black Edition” model lettering in black. The standard, three-spoke Sport Design steering wheel has a black leather rim. The trim strips of the dashboard and of the gear shift lever or PDK selector are painted in black. The dials on the instrument cluster are black, as are the partial leather seats with the Porsche emblem embossed in the headrests. A bespoke badge on the glove compartment lid further identifies each Black Edition.

Comfort and convenience is also enhanced for the Boxster S Black Edition with standard features including anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor, cruise control and a climate control system. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including satellite navigation module is also standard. In addition, the universal audio interface offering MP3 player compatibility and Bluetooth mobile phone preparation are also standard. The Sound Package Plus creates an impressive audio experience, and standard Bi-Xenon headlamps with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights ensure safety on dark roads.

Upon request, the Boxster S Black Edition can be individualised even further with other options. For example, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) is an option as well as the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the adaptive sports seats with memory function.

The Boxster S ‘Black Edition’ goes on sale in the UK and Ireland from March 2011 and is priced from £47,426. Included in the purchase price is the invitation for customers to explore the dynamic attributes of their Boxster and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

The Porsche 911 Black Editions offer the core 911 principles of distinctive design with inner strength; with a high level of specification that emphasises the iconic styling of the car and enhances the interior, while retaining the authentic sporting character of the driving experience.

Available in just 1,911 examples worldwide, the 911 Black Edition is painted in plain black as standard, with Basalt Black metallic available as an option. The electric-folding hood of the Cabriolet model is trimmed in black cloth. Exterior highlights are provided by the 19-inch 911 Turbo II forged alloy wheels, the glossy metallic appearance of which perfectly complements the discreet elegance of these 911 models. In addition, the wheel rims provide an unobstructed view of the brake discs which are naturally paired with black-finished, four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers.

Black lettering on the stainless steel door entry guards identifies each ‘Black Edition’, and provides a first hint of the high-quality interior design with its focus on pure sports car values. Inside, the colour theme of the exterior continues with a black leather interior, and facing the driver is a thick-rimmed SportDesign steering wheel. The instrument cluster naturally remains in black. On the glove compartment lid, a badge testifies to the limited production run of the 911 Black Edition. By way of contrast, the decorative fascia strip, gear lever and air vents are finished in aluminium-look paint. The rear centre console is painted in the exterior colour.

Together with the characteristic exhaust note of the flat-six 3.6-litre engine, a further acoustic highlight of the 911 Black Edition is the BOSE® Surround Sound-System that is fitted as standard. This was specially coordinated with the interior of the 911 Carrera and comprises 13 loudspeakers (twelve in the Cabriolet) including an active subwoofer and central speaker as well as a seven channel digital amplifier. Combined, this delivers a total output of 385 W for an immersive sound experience.

Also standard on the Black Edition models is satellite navigation, and a universal audio interface in the central console storage compartment that enables an MP3 player to be connected to the audio. Every 911 Black Edition also features rear ParkAssist, cruise control, automatic dimming anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors, and rain-sensing windscreen wipers.

The technology of the 911 Black Edition conforms to the Carrera standard: Under the rear lid is to be found the typical Carrera flat-six cylinder engine, producing 345 hp (245 kW) at 6,500 rpm from 3,614cc. Coupled with the six-speed gearbox, this output delivers a top speed of 180 mph (289 km/h) in both body versions. At its maximum acceleration, the Coupé reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds, the Cabriolet in 5.1 seconds. Combined with such impressive performance figures are remarkably moderate running costs; the 911 Black Series Coupé, for example, returns 27.4mpg Combined (NEDC).

The 911 Black Edition enjoys the same technical special equipment options that are offered for all Carrera models. First and foremost is the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox. A 911 Carrera with PDK turns in record performances thanks to the seven ratios and quick gear changes achieved with no interruption to the power flow. On the one hand fuel consumption: at 29.4 mpg (9.6 l/100 km) and 28.5 mpg (9.9 l/100 km) for the closed and open-top 911 respectively, the Carreras dip under the 10 l/100km threshold. On the other hand dynamics: with PDK, the Coupé accomplishes the sprint in only 4.7 seconds, the Cabrio in 4.9 seconds. Responsiveness can also be further enhanced by the optional Sport Chrono Plus package. It features the additional “Launch Control” function for the fastest possible acceleration from a standing start allied with a gearshift strategy for extremely sporty driving that enables very fast gearshifts. Launch Control shaves a further 0.2 seconds off the acceleration times of vehicles equipped with PDK.

The sportiness and comfort of the 911 Black Edition can be enhanced further if so desired. For example, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and as an additional option for the Coupé, the PASM with sports chassis lowered by 20 millimetres and mechanical rear limited slip differential. To further optimisebraking performance, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are also available at extra cost.

The 911 Black Edition goes on sale in the UK and Ireland from April 2011 and is priced from £67,270 for the Coupé and £74,958 for the Cabriolet – the same price as the standard 911 Carrera models.

Included in the purchase price is the invitation for customers to explore the dynamic attributes of their 911 and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

Porsche continues to extend its performance and high efficiency competence via intensive development work in the field of hybrid technology, and the company is presenting a world premiere of a synthesis of 2010′s successful hybrid concepts at the North American Auto Show in Detroit on January 10; the Porsche 918 RSR.

The Porsche 918 RSR is a two-seat mid-engined coupé that demonstrates what happens when the technology fitted in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car and the design of the 918 Spyder concept are combined to create a modern, innovative super sports car.

With its highly-efficient flywheel accumulator, the 911 GT3 R hybrid racing car attracted attention during competitive racing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, the American Le Mans Series races (ALMS) at Road Atlanta, USA and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup at Zhuhai in China. Around these different circuits, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid – referred to internally as the ‘Race Lab’ – not only demonstrated its massive performance potential under realistic motor racing conditions against top competitors, but in actual fact surpassed the high expectations of Porsche Motorsport.

Competitiveness, high reliability and exemplary fuel efficiency combined with top performance underscored the Porsche technicians’ basic idea of generating additional power in an intelligent manner. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid obtains its additional power from its own vehicle dynamics when braking – now, Porsche is transplanting this technology into the mid-engined coupé 918 RSR, the motor sports version of the 918 Spyder concept car.

From the tradition established by classic Porsche long-distance race cars such as the 908 long-tail coupé (1969) and the 917 short-tail coupé (1971), the Porsche designers created a link to the post-modernism of the ‘form follows function’ philosophy. In the 918 RSR, the elegant flow of the car’s lines is dominated by muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes and a pulpit-like cockpit. A visible fan wheel between the ram air intake tubes and a rear spoiler (with identical dimensions to that fitted on the RS Spyder race car) additionally emphasises the racing laboratory function. The new ‘liquid metal chrome blue’ colour which has been created emphasises the sculptured curves of the forms, whilst the typical Porsche hybrid orange colour on brake calipers and longitudinal stripes along the body lend remarkable touches.

Motor racing technology also dominates within the especially light, torsionally-stiff carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque. The V8 engine is a further development of the direct injection engine from the successful RS Spyder race car, but for the 918 RSR it has been tuned to deliver an output of precisely 563 hp at 10,300 rpm. The electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW (102 hp), i.e. a total of 150 kW (204 hp), to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. This additional power, which is generated during braking, is stored in an optimised flywheel accumulator.

In the 918 RSR, the two electric motors offer a torque vectoring function with variable torque distribution to the front axle. This additionally increases agility and improves steering response. Mounted upstream of the rear axle, the mid-engine is integrated with a racing transmission that is also based on that from the RS Spyder race car. This six-speed constant-mesh transmission with longitudinally-mounted shafts and straight-toothed spur gears is operated using two shift paddles behind the racing steering wheel. The car’s functional equipment underscores its pure-bred motor racing character. Whether it is the characteristic doors which open obliquely upwards; the air intake in the roof between the wing doors; the quick-action latches on the front and rear CFRP lids; the two roof-mounted aerials for pit radio and telemetry; the small, lateral front aerodynamic flics akin to those seen on the RS Spyder; the air splitters beneath the front lip; or the racing slick tyres on 19″ wheels with single centre locking nut, the vehicle can be clearly recognised as an experimental racing laboratory itself.

In contrast to the 918 Spyder concept, an unadorned racing ambience predominates inside the 918 RSR. The figure-hugging bucket seat in brown leather alludes to the history of the gentleman driver; the gear flashes on the racing steering wheel and a recuperation display on the steering column in front of the display screen supply the driver with information. Instead of the futuristic, ergonomically avant-garde centre console with touch-sensitive user interface from the 918 Spyder concept car, the cockpit of the 918 RSR is split by a minimalistic console with rocker switches. Instead of a second seat, the flywheel accumulator is positioned to the right of the console.

This flywheel accumulator is an electric motor whose rotor rotates at up to 36,000 rpm to store rotation energy. Charging occurs when the two electric motors on the front axle reverse their function during braking processes and operate as generators. At the push of a button, the driver is able to call up the energy stored in the charged flywheel accumulator and use it during acceleration or overtaking manoeuvres. The flywheel is braked electro-magnetically in this case in order to additionally supply up to 2 x 75 kW (totalling 150 kW) from its kinetic energy to the two electric motors on the front axle.

This additional power is available for around eight seconds when the system is fully charged. In the successful 911 GT3 R Hybrid, this additional power can also be used as a consumption aid depending on the racing situation, e.g. to delay pit stops or reduce the fuel tank volume and therefore the weight of the vehicle.

With the new 918 RSR racing laboratory, Porsche is now elevating this motor racing hybrid concept to an experimental level. In the 918 RSR, ‘Porsche Intelligent Performance’ equates to research into methods for further sustainable efficiency improvement under the intensified conditions of the race track, lap times, pit stops and reliability – disciplines in which Porsche has been demonstrating its success for over 60 years.

Finally, the starting number, 22, pays homage to the anniversary of a further triumph. Back in the days when overall victories in Le Mans were not yet an entirely routine matter within the Porsche racing department, drivers Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep were the first to cross the finishing line in the 1971 24-hour classic. The distance record set by their Porsche 917 short-tail coupé – 5335.313 kilometres (3315.21 miles) at an average speed of 222.304 km/h (138.13 mph) – did not remain unbeaten for an eternity, but for exactly 39 years until 2010. At the time, the Porsche 917 in the Martini colours was also an experiment and far ahead of its time: for example, its magnesium space chassis frame set new standards in the Porsche domain of lightweight construction.

The sports car manufacturer is investing approximately $200 million in a highly advanced wind tunnel, a state-of-the-art design center and an innovative electronics integration center.

The technology implemented in the new wind tunnel will also meet future requirements on vehicle development, which is increasingly focusing on energy efficiency.

“The new system will help us to maintain Porsche’s top position in the fields of aerodynamics and design and to further extend our lead. Outstanding design with optimal aerodynamic efficiency have always been classic Porsche strongholds,” says Wolfgang Durheimer, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Research and Development.

As the system will not only be used for Porsche’s internal developments, but will also be extensively available for Porsche customer development, it offers direct access from the adjacent design studio, and separate entrances for the discrete completion of customer development projects.

Above all, a new studio will offer more space for the Porsche designers, who are involved from the very earliest concept phase of each vehicle development process. Due to extended tasks, increased capacities are urgently required in the Weissach center of competence for sports car construction.

Sub-areas which were previously scattered throughout several buildings at Porsche’s Weissach site can be bundled in the future electronics integration center.

“This spatial proximity is a major advantage,” said Durheimer. “The close interaction of our suppliers’ various electrical system/electronics experts and colleagues from related specialist fields during development will contribute significantly to the success of our work, particularly in the case of electronics, which now play a role in virtually every vehicle component.”

Now, with the introduction of the Cayman R, Porsche has further developed the car by reducing weight, increasing horsepower and raising agility and handling to new heights. The new model becomes the third version in the Cayman range, joining the Cayman and Cayman S.

Weighing 55 kg less than the equivalent Cayman S, and boasting the most horsepower available in a mid-engined Porsche, the 330 hp Cayman R has been created for one reason: pure, distilled driving dynamics. With its highly-tuned sports suspension and vigilant attention to weight savings, the new Cayman model offers a driving experience even more precise than that of the acclaimed Cayman S.

Tracing its lineage back to the famous mid-engined 904 coupes of the 1960s, the Cayman R celebrates its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 17, 2010.

Light and Powerful
The newest member of the mid-engined Cayman family features the highly efficient 3.4-litre, flat six-cylinder Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) boxer engine found in the Cayman S, but it has been tuned to produce an additional 10 hp. With a six-speed manual transmission, the Cayman R sprints from a stand-still to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than the Cayman S. With the optional seven-speed dual-clutch PDK (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) transmission and the Sport Chrono package, the exercise is reduced to 4.7 seconds. Top speed with the manual transmission is up by 3 to 175 mph (282 km/h), 174 mph (280 km/h) with the PDK.

The main objective in the concept and execution of the Cayman R was to improve the already energetic two-seater through a systematic reduction in weight, thereby increasing performance, driving dynamics and agility. With an unladen weight of 1295 kg. Porsche engineers were able to achieve a power-to-weight ratio of 255 hp per tonne, and 250 hp per tonne with the PDK.

More from Less
The greatest savings come from the use of lightweight components and stripping back equipment levels to those associated with driving performance. In addition to the removal of the air conditioning and stereo, the driver-focused Cayman R utilises a unique, slightly smaller 54-litre fuel tank and a sports suspension system that lowers the Cayman R by 20 mm, helping lower the centre of gravity.

The Cayman R also comes as standard with a limited slip differential to optimise cornering grip, and lightweight 19” alloy wheels (first seen on the Boxster Spyder) that reduce weight by 5kg. Lightweight aluminium door skins from the 911 Turbo and GT3, carbon fibre sports bucket seats and the distinctive interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS also contribute to the weight reduction.

From the outside, the distinctive Cayman Aerokit sports styling – with fixed rear spoiler in contrasting colour – sets the Cayman R apart, and black-framed halogen headlights, contrasting side mirrors and decorative “PORSCHE” side-stripes bring further differentiation. For customers seeking to stand out further from the crowd a new option of Peridot metallic paint is available (as seen in the photos.)

The Porsche Cayman R goes on sale in the UK in February 2011, priced from £51,731 1. Included in the purchase price is the invitation for customers to explore the dynamic attributes of their Cayman R and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

The origins of R
Historically, special Porsche models with optimised sporting performance were identified by the moniker ‘R’, for Racing. The most revered model of this type is the 911 R of 1967. This specialised, lightweight edition of the 911 coupe had a 210 hp flat six engine shared with the Carrera 6 sports racer and weighed just 830 kg. Just 19 examples were built.

Most recently, the 911 GT3 ‘R’ has been built for racing in sports car championships around the world.

First used on the classic 356 model of 1953, the Speedster quickly became synonymous with low-slung, open-top, two-seater Porsche sports cars that attracted free-spirited driving enthusiasts seeking the ultimate ‘wind in the hair’ experience. Now, in celebration of the Speedster legend, Porsche is introducing a new 911 Speedster at the Paris Salon on October 2, and to commemorate its famous ‘50s forebear, the production run is limited to just 356 examples.

Designed and conceived by the Porsche Exclusive department in Stuttgart, the two-seater 911 Speedster is significantly different from the other members of the 911 family. Every Porsche Speedster was traditionally distinguished by its shortened windscreen and sleek tail, and the new 911 likewise features a 60mm lowered and raked windscreen and the characteristic ‘double-bubble’ hardcover for the manual soft top.

The striking profile of the new 911 Speedster is further defined by the use of the Carrera 4 body, the 44 millimetre wider rear stance of which additionally gives powerful visual emphasis to the rear wheel-drive configuration of the car.

Just as the style of the new 911 Speedster features contemporary re-interpretations of classic Porsche Speedster iconography, the characteristic rear-engined chassis features the best from the current 911 generation. The 3.8-litre flat six has been tuned to deliver 408 hp (300 kW), 23 hp more than in the 911 Carrera S. With average fuel consumption of 27.43 mpg (10.3 litres/100 km) (NEDC), the new Speedster uses no more fuel than the standard 911 Carrera S Cabriolet – a consequence of Porsche Intelligent Performance2.

The 911 Speedster features as standard a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) gearbox which transmits power via a limited slip differential to the rear axle, which lends further finesse to the chassis dynamics. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are also standard. Added to this is exemplary protection for the driver and passenger, with the safety roll-over protection system, which is standard in all open-top Porsche cars, being specifically tailored for the unique Speedster design.

The conception of the current Speedster comes from Porsche Exclusive – the department of Porsche that specialises in individualisation of Porsche cars and low volume production. The 911 Speedster heralds the 25th anniversary of Porsche Exclusive which will be celebrated in 2011, and further demonstrates the competence of the in-house technical experts after the recent success of the 911 Sport Classic.

The 911 Speedster has a generous level of equipment as standard and, as is to be expected from the artisans at Porsche Exclusive, its appeal also comes from the meticulously hand-finished interior in black smooth-finish leather with numerous exterior colour painted details – each one bespoke to the Speedster. These include decorative designs with black and white patterns reminiscent of a chequered flag on the centre sections of the sports seats, and leather side bolsters in the exterior colour.

The sporting flavour is enhanced further by the ‘Pure Blue’ exterior colour that has been developed exclusively for the Speedster, and which provides an intriguing contrast with the tinted front lights, black headlight surrounds, black windscreen border and other black decorative designs. It also features a bespoke front spoiler, specific side-skirts and a distinct rear apron. Porsche fans will also note the colour-coordinated black stone guard ahead of the rear wheels, reminiscent of prior editions of the 911. Upon request, the Speedster is available in Carrara White, at no extra cost.

The new Porsche 911 Speedster will have its global debut at the Paris Salon on October 2 and goes on sale in the UK in January 2011, priced from £144,100.

Fitted to every 911 Speedster is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The Porsche Speedster legend 1

In 1953, the Speedster series was launched with a pure sports car based on the Porsche 356, which had two sports bucket seats, doors with slide-in plastic side windows, and a shortened, elegantly curved windscreen. 1,234 examples were built.

By the time the 356 A was introduced in 1955, the Speedster reputation was firmly established and 2,910 examples were produced.

In 1989, the Speedster celebrated its revival with an edition based on the 911 Carrera 3.2, this time with an added feature; for the first time, the hood compartment lid had the characteristic ‘double bubble’ styling. Initially, a limited run of 171 were produced, but a wide-bodied ‘Turbolook’ version introduced shortly afterwards was sold to 2,103 customers.

In 1992/1993, the next evolutionary stage of the 911 Carrera – the Type 964 – ushered in a further Speedster edition, of which 930 examples were built. A further 15 widebodied ‘Turbolook’ versions were specially commissioned by customers.

Most recently, two examples of the Type 993 911 Speedster have been built to special order.

Porsche Classic, the department of Porsche AG responsible for supporting all Porsche classic cars, will be recreating the spirit of the early 1960s at the March Motorworks and showcasing the expertise of the specialists of the Porsche Classic workshop as well as the comprehensive range of Porsche Classic original parts and technical literature.

The famous “Grandmother”, the 718 W-RS Spyder, from the Porsche Museum will be worked on during the event by two mechanics in a lovingly recreated, classic workshop. Two workbenches will also give visitors the opportunity to see work in progress on engines from the 356 and 912, and a 356 transmission.

Original old drawings, lubrication plans, racing posters and trophies will be on display; and fans of the Porsche 356 can examine many original parts which are still available from Porsche Genuine Parts, including the front grille, brake drums, wings or headlight lenses at a historic After Sales counter.

The Classic experts from Stuttgart in Germany will be present at the Porsche exhibit to offer advice and information on all questions relating to the supply of Porsche original spare parts and the restoration of classic Porsche vehicles.

Porsche Origin will also take a journey into the historic world of Porsche and provide all Porsche enthusiasts around the world with online access to exclusive behind the scenes footage, interviews and reviews from the event, all available to watch, download, share and enjoy from Friday 17 September at www.porsche.co.uk/origin

The Goodwood Revival, which has been taking place at the Goodwood Motor Circuit since 1998, is a very special experience. The most popular meeting of Pre-1966 racing cars in the world, it gives visitors a taste of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. The vintage and classic races on the authentic circuit, which remains untouched by modern motor sports, are not the only spectacular feature: visitors also dress up in period clothing to immerse themselves in another world and bring the old times to life.

With a power output of 408 hp, outstanding vehicle dynamics and a specification that emphasises the character of the iconic sports coupe, the new 911 Carrera GTS ascends to the pinnacle of the Carrera model series.

Powered by a 3.8-litre direct injection flat six engine that has been tuned to produce an additional 23 hp more than the 911 Carrera S, the new GTS combines the traditional 911 virtues of exceptional sporting performance, distinctive styling and day to day versatility.

Special attention was paid to the cylinder charge in the 3.8-litre flat engine fitted to the Carrera GTS in order to deliver 408 hp. A special resonance intake manifold features six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps that switch between power- and torque-optimised geometry, whereas in a Carrera S power unit there is only one tuning flap. Consequently, the maximum torque of 420 Nm is available at 4,200 rpm, 200 rpm earlier than with the Carrera S for increased low rev response. Added to this is a sports exhaust system with two dual tailpipes producing a unique sound. The outer shells of the exhaust pipes are painted in black and their inner tubes are polished on the outside and nano-coated.

As standard, the Carrera GTS has a six-speed manual gearbox and the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is available as an option. In comparison with the Carrera S, top speed of the GTS with manual transmission rises by 2mph to 190 mph. In general, acceleration from zero to 62mph improves by 0.1 seconds; for a GTS Coupé with PDK and a Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode the benchmark sprint takes just 4.2 seconds.

True to the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, this additional sportiness goes hand in hand with more rational appeal: the new 911 Carrera GTS consumes no more fuel than the Carrera S in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Fuel consumption of a Carrera GTS with PDK in the NEDC is 27.7 mpg (10.2 litres/100 km) and CO2 emissions are 240 g/km.

Unique within the 911 Carrera family, the GTS combines the 44 millimetre wider body of the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models – including widened rear track – with a classic rear-wheel drive configuration.

There are many more details which underline the design and technology of the GTS from other Carrera models. For instance, the GTS sits on 19-inch centre-locking RS Spyder alloy wheels, painted in black with high-gloss finished rims, with 235/35 ZR 19 tyres on the front axle and 305/30 ZR 19 tyres on the rear. Further features include the SportDesign front apron with spoiler edge painted in black, special side skirts also in black, and the Carrera GTS logotype on doors and rear lid, in black or silver depending on the body colour. The area between the two tailpipes on the rear apron is also finished in black.

In combination with the standard black interior colour, the centre sections of the driver and passenger sport seats are covered with black Alcantara. The sporty interior ambience is further emphasised by use of Alcantara wherever driver and passenger come into direct contact with the vehicle; such as on the rim of the new three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel and on the gear lever and handbrake.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will have its global debut at the Paris Salon on October 2 and goes on sale in the UK in December, priced from £76,758 for the Coupe and £83,493 for the Cabriolet.

Fitted to every 911 Carrera GTS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

The employees are not only proud to be a significant part of the successful launch of Porsche’s fourth model line, they have reached this milestone while also producing the all-new, next-generation 2011 Porsche Cayenne SUV that is now in North American Porsche dealerships.

The anniversary vehicle, a Ruby Red Panamera sporting an efficient Porsche designed and manufactured 300-horsepower 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine, will be delivered to a customer in the USA. “The benchmark performance of our Panamera V6 models wins over our customers worldwide,” said Bernhard Maier, Porsche’s Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing. “Even in the USA, a country with a preference for V8 engines, they impress with their efficiency and sportiness. The Panamera combines these aspects with the comfort and exclusivity of the luxury class.”

Porsche began selling the Panamera in September 2009 (October in North America). The company first rolled out its 400-horsepower V8 Panamera S and Panamera 4S and the 500-horsepower twin-turbocharged Panamera Turbo, adding the V6-powered Panamera and Panamera 4 in May/June 2010. To date U.S. Porsche dealers have sold over 5,000 Panamera models in the United States.

In line with the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy — more performance on less fuel, increased efficiency and lower CO2 emissions — all models feature the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed double-clutch gearbox and the Auto Start Stop function that saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a traffic light. None are subject to a gas-guzzler tax, and all meet the strict EU5 emission standard in Europe and the LEV standard in the United States.

Next year Porsche will introduce a Panamera model featuring a hybrid drive system similar to what powers the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid, which goes on sale this fall. Porsche’s future also shines with yesterday’s announcement to commence series development of the 918 Spyder, Porsche first plug-in hybrid super sports car.

Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave the Porsche Board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented. This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting the headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, said; “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 94.1 mpg (3.0 litres/100 km) on the NEDC, combined with the performance of a super-sports car. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology has a natural home in the 918 Spyder given the truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements for which Porsche is renowned.

Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come.

The new generation Porsche Cayenne went on sale on May 29, and in the four weeks since over 16,000 orders have been received worldwide. Building on the proven qualities of the prior model, which has become the biggest selling Porsche in the company’s history, the new Cayenne features a driver-oriented chassis that has been designed to combine sports car handling on the road with the added versatility of being able to cover ground quickly and safely, regardless of the terrain.

Four month order lead time

Visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 1- 4) experienced the outstanding agility of the Cayenne first-hand by enjoying high-speed passenger rides around a specially-designed dynamics course. The Moving Motor Show element of this year’s Festival allowed many more people to get close to the new Cayenne, and generated a significant level of enquiries.

In the UK, over 1,000 orders have already been placed across all model series – Diesel, Hybrid and petrol. Due to this demand customers can expect to wait on average four months between placing their order and taking delivery – a fact that will aid residual values.

Hybrid power captures the public imagination

The technically-sophisticated Cayenne S Hybrid combines the sporting performance of an eight-cylinder engine with the economy of a six-cylinder and is proving to be a popular new addition to the range, accounting for 15 per cent of orders.

At 193 g/km CO2, the Hybrid is not only the Cayenne with the lowest level of emissions, but also the cleanest Porsche throughout the Company’s entire portfolio. This qualifies the Hybrid for Band J vehicle excise duty and annual road tax of £235. Furthermore, the Cayenne S Hybrid returns fuel consumption of 34.4mpg Combined (8.2 litres/100km) reducing running costs further still.

As a consequence of its low emission technology, the Cayenne Hybrid has been confirmed as eligible for exemption from the London Congestion Charge. Customers who live or have reason to travel regularly to the London Congestion Charge zone are able to register their Cayenne Hybrid with the authorities and receive a two year permit for free transit through the area.*

Porsche Intelligent Performance

The new Porsche Cayenne offers an unrivalled choice of engines in the premium SUV market segment, with Diesel, petrol, turbocharged petrol and Hybrid available. Every Cayenne is a trend-setter in terms of performance and efficiency, courtesy of the principles of Porsche Intelligent Performance; more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. This philosophy is manifest in the introduction of a new Tiptronic S eight-speed automatic transmission featuring a wider spread of gear ratios, an Auto Start Stop function, optimised thermal management on the engine and transmission cooling system, on-board network recuperation, and intelligent lightweight construction.

F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart and marks the summit in the 911 range. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kilograms in comparison with the prior 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.21 kilos per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class.

Obviously, these are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility, combined with truly blistering performance on the road and, of course, exemplary Porsche Intelligent Performance attributes. This manifests itself in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions being lower by approximately 5 per cent to 23.7 mpg (equal to 11.9 ltr/100 km) and 284 g/km versus the 911 GT2, despite the extra power and performance.

The six-cylinder boxer engine is boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry (exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a petrol engine) and drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Sports tyres measuring 325/30 ZR 19 and developed especially for the 911 GT2 RS convert this massive power into equally massive performance and acceleration on the road: 0 – 62mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, 0 – 124mph (200 km/h) in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 – 186mph (300 km/h) in 28.9 seconds.

Equally supreme stopping power on this ultra-high-performance sports car is assured by the PCCB composite ceramic brakes fitted as standard. Appropriate longitudinal and lateral dynamic chassis control is ensured by the sporting RS set-up of the springs, Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), anti-roll bars, as well as the engine mounts and PSM Porsche Stability Management.

In its exterior styling, the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the 911 GT2 through the use of carbon-fibre-reinforced (CFR) components in distinctive matt-black surface finish. At the front, the new, wider 911 GT2-style light-alloy wheels with centre locking are shrouded by flared wheel arches. ”GT2 RS“ model designations give further differentiation on the doors and rear engine cover. The upgraded front spoiler lip and the rear spoiler lip are also made of CFR and display a surface carbon finish. The rear spoiler lip is now 10 millimetres higher to ensure the right aerodynamic precision, as well as extra downforce.

From behind the wheel of the 911 GT2 RS, the flair of sporting performance continues. Featuring lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic – again in carbon surface finish – and lightweight interior door panels with door opening straps, the high octane ambience is sustained. The basic interior colour is black, contrasting attractively with red alcantara upholstery on the seat centre sections and the roof lining as well as segments on the steering wheel rim, gearshift and handbrake lever.

Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in the UK from September 2010 priced from £164,107. Further specifications and technical details will be confirmed nearer to launch.

Fitted to every 911 GT2 RS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

Porsche will introduce the next-generation Cayenne sport utility vehicle, including a hybrid gas-electric version, to the North American market on March 31 during a press conference at the New York International Automobile Show.

Led by a highly advanced hybrid model, the new Porsche Cayenne sport-utility vehicle delivers improved performance while using less fuel and producing fewer emissions throughout the entire model lineup.

The North American Cayenne model range will include four models: the 2011 Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo and the Cayenne S Hybrid. The S and Turbo models go on sale in July, with the Cayenne and Cayenne S Hybrid in dealer showrooms this fall.

All the new Cayenne models embody the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, the evolution of vehicles sportier than their predecessors, yet more fuel and emissions efficient.
“Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy is more than a slogan. It is nothing less than Porsche keeping pace with the modern automotive landscape by dramatically lowering emissions, becoming greener and saving fuel,” explained Detlev von Platen, Porsche Cars North America President and CEO. “We will we accomplish this through technology and innovative ideas, just as we have throughout our history, and show that Porsche’s high performance and efficiency are not contradictory terms.”

Cayenne’s dynamic new design offers less weight and more room

The Cayenne’s new exterior leaves no doubt it is part of the Porsche family. Its sporting character is evident from all angles, and its Porsche shape and highlights are more distinct than before. From a dimensions standpoint, it is 1.9 inches longer than its predecessor, and its wheelbase adds 1.6 inches, ensuring extra interior space and greater versatility. Still, despite its larger exterior, this next-generation Cayenne looks even more compact and dynamic.

Thanks to a special combination of materials as well as changes in the overall vehicle concept, such as a new all-wheel drive system, weight has been reduced on all models. Despite a higher standard of safety features, the Cayenne S, for example, is almost 400 lbs lighter, which not only improves fuel consumption and lowers emissions, but also boosts performance, agility, and handling.

Inside, the luxurious interior features a high center console that, like the Panamera, rises up at an incline to meet the dashboard center stack and a touch-screen infotainment interface. Porsche’s traditional set of five round instruments in the driver’s gauge cluster includes a high-resolution circular TFT screen to the right of the tachometer. It can be used to change radio stations, vehicle settings, access the navigation system or view the map. Rear-seat comfort is improved, as well. The bench slides fore-and-aft by 6.3 inches, while the backrest can be adjusted.

The advanced Cayenne S Hybrid

The high-tech Cayenne S Hybrid that is debuting at the New York show next week features a highly sophisticated parallel full hybrid system. With a combined power output of 380 horsepower from the supercharged V6 combustion engine and an electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid combines the performance of a V8 with the economy of a V6.

Through continuous interaction between the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid focuses on maximum efficiency. Depending on driving conditions, either drive unit can operate independently or together. The 47-horsepower (34 kW) electric motor is the ideal partner for the 333-horsepower engine, which produces high torque at low engine speeds. With peak torque at 428 lb-ft at just 1,000 rpm, the Cayenne S Hybrid’s performance is on par with a V8-powered Cayenne S.

The Cayenne S Hybrid’s two drive units are connected by a decoupling clutch. A hybrid controller constantly coordinates their complex interaction, and intelligent management of the clutch makes the transition among various driving modes seamless. Like many hybrids, the Cayenne S Hybrid can cover short distances on electric power alone, free of emissions and noise up to 60 km/h or almost 40 mph. For aggressive acceleration, the motor provides an extra ‘boost’ to the gasoline engine.

Like many hybrids, the Cayenne S Hybrid can cover short distances on electric power alone, free of emissions and noise up to 60 km/h or almost 40 mph. For aggressive acceleration, the motor provides an extra ‘boost’ to the gasoline engine.

A new standard for Sport Utility Vehicles

All new-generation Cayenne SUVs set high standards for efficiency and performance. Compared with the former models, fuel consumption is down by up to 23 percent in the New European Driving Cycle and CO2 emissions are reduced. Actual EPA-certified fuel economy figures will be available when the cars go on sale in North America in July.
A new eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission with a wide range of gear ratios and the Automatic Start Stop function (first introduced on the Panamera) contribute to these improvements. So does efficient thermal management of the engine and transmission cooling circuits, on-board electrical network recuperation, variable deceleration fuel cut-off and the Cayenne’s intelligent lightweight construction.

The entry-level Cayenne with its 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine and mated to the new eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission consumes 20 percent less fuel than its predecessor.

Fuel consumption is also down significantly on the high-torque Cayenne S. Its 4.8-liter V8 produces 400 horsepower, 15 more than the previous model.
The Cayenne Turbo, with its 500-horsepower, 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 also consumes less fuel than its predecessor despite its improved performance and acceleration.
Three other new Porsche models are making their New York debuts next week. Most prominent is the agile, light and dynamic 2011 Boxster Spyder roadster, a purer Porsche roadster weighing in at just 2,811 lbs. This sleek version of Porsche’s popular mid-engine sports car is the lightest Porsche available is on sale now with an MSRP of $61,200. Also on display will be the 2011 911 Turbo Cabriolet featuring a 500-horsepower 3.8-liter engine, the first entirely new engine in 911 Turbo’s storied 35-year- history. Finally, the new Porsche Panamera, the company’s first four-door Gran Turismo, will grace the Porsche display in New York.

A lightweight version of the mid-engined Porsche Boxster roadster, the Spyder represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, open-roofed, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating the most successful road-going sports and racing cars throughout the history of Porsche, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder of the 1950s to the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype race car so successful in motorsport today.

Weighing 1,275 kg, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model in the Porsche line-up, and continues this clear-cut philosophy in a package offering full homologation for the road, and fulfilling a popular wish expressed by Porsche customers.

The new model becomes the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S, yet at first sight stands out clearly from the other models. This is quite simply because the Spyder has been developed essentially for driving in the open air.

Bold and sporty styling

The Boxster Spyder is first and foremost a Boxster – but interpreted in a totally new way. The purist character of the car is evident at first sight, with particular emphasis on the two-seater roadster design with its mid-engine. The new, elegantly long rear lid, together with new wheels and distinctive styling touches inside and out, give the car an absolutely unique look.

The low-slung, lightweight soft top extends far to the rear at a distinctive angle and serves to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and rain. When closed, the soft top, together with the bespoke, shallower side windows and the two unique striking bulges on the single-piece rear engine cover, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT super sports car.

And classic Porsche logos run along the bottom of each door as a leitmotif inspired by earlier Porsche Spyder race cars.

The main objective of the Porsche Design Studio in creating the Boxster Spyder was to make the classic design of the current Boxster S even purer and to make clear reference to classic Porsche racing cars. Great importance was placed on emphasising the car’s functions. The design of the manual roof is intended not only to perfect the silhouette but also to meet the basic needs of the passengers in bad weather. For this reason, the top speed with the hood raised is limited to 124mph.

Two convex curves running lengthwise in the completely new aluminium rear lid, the fixed rear spoiler and a modified front spoiler lip help to optimise the car’s aerodynamics. As you would expect, the aerodynamic qualities of the Boxster Spyder have been honed for superior driving dynamics. The aerodynamic Cd rating of 0.30 is identical to the Boxster S, while the drag (Cd x A) is in fact lower due to the smaller frontal area. The excellent aerodynamics makes a significant contribution to the agility of the car at speed, and also to low fuel consumption.

Significantly, the Spyder weighs 80kg less than the Boxster S which, combined with a lower centre of gravity and revised chassis settings, gives the Boxster Spyder the calibre of driving dynamics that clearly reflect the unique look of the car.

Higher performance through intelligent weight reduction

While the overall objective behind the Boxster Spyder was to improve performance, this has been achieved in an intelligent way, not simply by boosting engine power. Instead, every detail was scrutinised to deliver the required dynamic responses, with the driver’s needs – as is typical of Porsche – the primary focus.

The obvious point of difference between the Boxster Spyder and its siblings is its manual roof instead of an electric folding one, and the use of a large aluminium rear lid, that not only creates that essential ‘speedster’ look, but also contributes to the car’s lightweight character and thrilling performance.

The purist qualities of the Spyder are delivered by a comprehensive programme of lightweight features:

manual fabric roof with carbon fibre front frame reduces the Spyder’s weight by 21 kg

aluminium doors similar to those on the 911 Turbo and GT3 saves 15 kg

the use of an aluminium rear engine cover saves 3 kg

since the Spyder was designed for sporty open-top driving, the air conditioning has been removed and saves 12 kg

using lightweight carbon fibre sports bucket seats saves 12 kg

the fuel tank has a capacity of 54 litres, 10 litres fewer than standard Boxster, saving 7 kg

the lightweight design of the 19” Spyder alloy wheels saves 5 kg

there is no radio and a smaller battery, saving approximately 3 kg

dispensing with cup holders and using lightweight interior door trims with door opening loops saves 2 kg

The interior of the Boxster Spyder has been adopted from the Boxster S, but re-worked with particular emphasis on purism, ergonomics and authenticity. Finished mainly in black, the cockpit is complemented by features in exterior colour and highlights in red. Of particular note is the omission of the instrument cowl above the dials, which lowers weight and also sends out a clear puristic signal

Chassis tuned for even sharper handling

As is evident, systematic lightweight design sets the Boxster Spyder apart, and delivers an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 4 kg/hp (9 per cent better than a Boxster S) that manifests itself in remarkable performance, culminating in a lap time around the Nurburgring Nordschleife seven seconds quicker than that of a Boxster S.

The specially adapted chassis of the Boxster Spyder gives the car its more dynamic character. Lowering the entire body by 20mm contributes further to the car’s lower centre of gravity and the combined use of modified anti-roll bars and even stiffer spring/damper units significantly increases the performance potential. This is supported by a front track width increased by 4mm and an 8mm wider rear track. A mechanically locking differential is fitted as standard, and delivers significantly improved traction on changing road surfaces and when cornering at the extreme limits of performance. Locking values are 22 per cent under power and 27 per cent in overrun.

Although delivering a firmer and sporty chassis set-up, the Boxster Spyder retains a remarkably compliant ride; not least as a result of the tyre pressures being able to be set slightly lower due to the weight reduction measures.

More power from classic flat six engine

The Boxster Spyder features a tuned version of the proven 3.4-litre flat six ‘boxer’ engine with Direct Fuel Injection, which is mounted amidships ahead of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S. As standard, the Spyder features a six-speed manual gearbox, but the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission is available as an option. When equipped with PDK and the optional Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, can accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 30.4mpg (9.3 litres/100km) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle and top speed, in turn, is 166 mph (267 km/h) – with the roof removed.

The outstanding driving dynamics and steering precision of the Boxster Spyder achieves a standard never before seen in any Boxster. The car’s lightweight construction, combined with the increase in performance and modifications of the chassis, offers not only superior driving pleasure, but also a level of performance quite unique in the market.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder started worldwide in February 2010, and the car is priced from £46,387 in the UK. Standard specification on every Spyder includes 6-speed manual transmission, 19” Boxster Spyder alloy wheels, manual two-piece hood comprising sunshield and weather protector, wind deflector, sports chassis lowered by 20 mm, lightweight carbon fibre sports bucket seats trimmed in Alcantara/leather, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), 3-spoke sports steering wheel, fixed rear spoiler, and heat insulating glass.

Included in the purchase price is the invitation for customers to explore the dynamic attributes of their Boxster Spyder, and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.

The Carrera Cup GB set a new grid record at Brands Hatch last year when a 27-car field lined up for the deciding races of the season. That marker should be bettered when the 2010 season gets under way at Thruxton, Hampshire, on April 3/4.

“This is an incredible situation for the Carrera Cup GB,” said Porsche Cars GB Managing Director, Andy Goss. “The entries for the 2010 season are impressive. The drivers and teams have worked very hard to get to this stage and we are set for the best season ever. I’m particularly pleased that the field is a great mix of established competitors and an influx of newcomers.”

One of the largest teams on the grid will be the six-car squad from Motorbase Performance, based near Tonbridge, Kent, and team boss David Bartrum says that the capacity grid is testimony to the performance of the 911 GT3 Cup race cars, the brand appeal of racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship and not least the commitment of Porsche Cars GB.

“I said a year ago that the Carrera Cup was buzzing and it’s now off the scale,” said Bartrum. “It proves that the work of Porsche Cars GB and the Carrera Cup team has really paid dividends. It’s really good to see a sell-out grid in the current climate.”

Now entering its eighth season, the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship comprises a superb 20-race programme alongside the MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). Using the Carrera Cup format that is established in many countries around the world, the Championship sees drivers racing identical versions of the 420bhp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. And, with minimal modifications permitted to the cars, it is only the drivers’ skill, talent and experience that make the decisive difference in the fight for victory, points and prize money. Spectacular action is always a feature of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and with high calibre drivers taking part, close racing between the cars is guaranteed.

The prize fund of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB is one of the largest in national motorsport and a purse in excess of £150,000 will be shared across the grid. In addition, the overall 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup Champion will also be presented with a new Porsche 911 Carrera, on loan for twelve months following their victory.

For the 2010 Championship, the field has been capped at 28 cars to ensure that all registered contenders can start each of the races. However, the Championship organisers have now opened a reserve list in case any slots become available. It is also possible that spaces at specific race meetings may become open and these will be offered to any teams or drivers on the waiting list.

The full Carrera Cup GB entry list will be unveiled at the Championship’s pre-season test and media day at Silverstone on Wednesday 17 March.

The absolute highlight is the presentation of a concept of a high-performance mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology, the 918 Spyder, which debuts alongside the Cayenne S Hybrid, the first production hybrid in the history of Porsche AG, and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid which is the first racing car from the Stuttgart marque with electric front axle drive and a flywheel energy reservoir.

Highly Efficient and Ultra-Fast: Porsche 918 Spyder Mid-Engined Sports Car with Plug-In Hybrid

Presenting a high-performance mid-engined concept sports car with ultra-efficient, low-emission drive technology, Porsche is further increasing the Company’s competence in hybrid technology.

The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing features and electro-mobility with the performance of a thoroughbred super sports car to offer a fascinating range of qualities. These include, first and foremost, an emissions level of just 70 grams/km CO2 combined with fuel consumption of three litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg on the New European Driving Cycle); a feat outstanding even for an ultra-compact city car, yet truly remarkable when combined with the performance of a supercar. Acceleration from 0-62mph (100 km/h) is achievable in just under 3.2 seconds, a top speed of more than 198mph (320 km/h), and a lap time around the Nürburgring Nordschleife of less than 7:30 minutes – faster than the Porsche Carrera GT.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This trio – made up of the new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery, and the two-seater high-performance 918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology – clearly demonstrates not only the great bandwidth of this new drive technology, but also the innovative power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in hybrid drive.

The new generation Porsche Cayenne will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 2. Each model in the Cayenne range is a trend-setter in terms of efficiency and output and, compared with the former models, offers an increase in fuel economy of up to 23 per cent with more performance.

The highlight of the new line-up is the technically sophisticated parallel full hybrid drive-train which combines the sporting performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder and a unique ‘sailing mode’ for even lower fuel consumption.

Lower weight

The selection of materials for optimum weight combined with changes in the overall concept of the Cayenne – such as a new active and extra-light all-wheel drive transmission – has resulted in the overall weight of the Cayenne S, for example, being reduced by 180kg. This weight reduction clearly has a very positive effect not only on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but also on performance, agility, and handling. Consequently, the breadth of new features and new technologies throughout the Cayenne ensures that it offers greater driving quality both on- and off-road, together with enhanced safety and passenger comfort.

Greater efficiency

The new Cayenne has been developed according to the principles of Porsche Intelligent Performance: more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Thisphilosophy is manifest in the introduction of a new Tiptronic S eight-speed automatic transmission featuring a wider spread of gear ratios, an Auto Start Stop function, optimised thermal management on the engine and transmission cooling system, on-board network recuperation, and intelligent lightweight construction.

Fresh Exterior Design and High Quality Interior

Overall, the new Cayenne is 48 mm longer than its predecessor. But despite its larger exterior dimensions, the design language of the new generation Cayenne represents a more compact and dynamic style. The fresh design of the new model integrates the 2010 Cayenne into the Porsche range and the sporting character of the Cayenne is clearly obvious, just as the highlights in the shape and design of the car so typical of Porsche are also clearly defined.

Extra space inside and greater everyday usability is ensured by a 40mm longer wheelbase. The most significant feature within the brand new, high-quality interior is the rising centre console that extends to surround the gearshift selector and which gives the interior the typical Porsche ‘cockpit’ character. In the rear, the seat bench can move forwards and back by 160mm and the backrest angle has three different position settings.

Range Summary

No less than three of the five versions of the new Cayenne consume less than ten litres of fuel per 100 km in the New European Driving Cycle, and two models emit fewer than 200 grams of CO2 per km.

Cayenne

The Cayenne range starts with the 3.6-litre V6 petrol-engined Cayenne. Power has risen to 300 hp, but fuel consumption has dropped by a fifth – in conjunction with the eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission – to 28.5 mpg Combined (9.9 ltr/100km) on the New European DrivingCycle.

Cayenne S Hybrid

At 193 g/km, the Cayenne S Hybrid is not only the cleanest version of the Cayenne with the lowest level of emissions, but also the cleanest Porsche throughout the Company’s entire portfolio. The Cayenne S Hybrid features a 333 hp drive-train that returns fuel consumption of 34.4mpg Combined (8.2 litres/100km) and CO2 emissions of 193 g/km.

In the intelligent interaction of the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 and the electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid focuses on maximum efficiency from the overall powertrain system. Depending on driving conditions, the vehicle reaches this target with either only one drive unit operating independently or with both drive units working together. In this context the 34 kW (47 hp) electric motor is of course the ideal partner for the 333 hp compressor engine with its high torque at low speeds. Together, the two drive units deliver maximum output of 380 hp and peak torque of 580 Nm at just 1,000 rpm, with the same kind of performance as the Cayenne S with its conventional V8 petrol power unit.

The two drive units are connected to one another by a separator clutch masterminded by the Hybrid Manager computer. This separator clutch is essential to run the Cayenne S Hybrid either on its electric motor or combustion engine alone, or with both drive units operating together. Thus, under relaxed driving conditions, for example in a residential area, this allows the driver to cover short distances on electric power alone and therefore absolutely free of emissions (and with hardly any noise). Furthermore, it is possible to drive in this mode at speeds of approaching 40 mph (60 km/h).

However, to ensure fast acceleration when setting off, the electric motor may serve to provide additional thrust through its ‘boosting’ effect. Intelligent management of the separator clutch makes for an inconspicuous transition among the hybrid-specific driving modes, and one which is comfortable and quick for the driver. At the same time, the combustion engine may be completely switched off at speeds of up to 97 mph (156 km/h), being fully disengaged from the drivetrain when no further power is required. In this so-called ‘sailing mode’, cruising along without power, the drag forces exerted by the combustion engine and their braking effect are eliminated in the interest of lowering resistance and thus further benefitting fuel consumption.

Cayenne Diesel

The Cayenne Diesel has a 240 bhp (176 kW) three-litre V6 engine offering 550 Nm of pulling power. In the new car, this powertrain now offers 20 per cent lower fuel consumption, with a Combined mpg of 38.2 (7.4 ltr/100 km), increased from 30.4 mpg (9.3 ltr/100km). Consequently, CO2 emissions are 195 g/km.

Cayenne S

The maxim of more power on less fuel is demonstrated by the Cayenne S, which now features a 400 hp high-torque 4.8-litre V8 petrol engine. With 15 hp more than the prior model combined with greater economy, this new engine offers significantly better performance overall, just like all models in the new generation of the Cayenne. In particular, fuel consumption is down by 23 per cent, with a Combined mpg of 26.9 (10.5 litres/100km).

CayenneTurbo

Greater efficiency is also an attribute of the Cayenne Turbo, with its 500 bhp (368 kW) twin-turbocharged 4.8-litre V8 returning 27.6 mpg Combined (11.5 ltr/100 km) in the New European Driving Cycle. This is once again 23 per cent less than its predecessor.

Cayenne RangePrices

The new generation Cayenne goes on sale in the UK on May 29 priced as follows:

Cayenne £41,404
CayenneDiesel £44,178

<img src="http://motoring-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/59765por-.jpg" alt="" title="59765por-" width="350" height="236" align="left" size-full wp-image-2889" />A Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, taking the evolution of the iconic sports coupe to new levels in motor sport and opening a new chapter in an illustrious racing record that has witnessed more than 20,000 victories in 45 years.

After its debut in Switzerland, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long-distance races around the Nürburgring, Germany. The highlight of this test programme will be the 24 Hours race around the 14-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit on 15/16 May. However, the focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race but rather serving as a spearhead for the technology and a ‘racing laboratory’ that will provide invaluable knowledge and insight on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going Porsche sports cars.

110 years since Ferdinand Porsche – the company’s founder – developed the world’s first car with hybrid drive, the Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, it is entirely appropriate that Porsche is once again employing this visionary drive concept in a production car-based GT racing programme.

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid
The hybrid technology featured in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid has been developed especially for racing, and is set apart from conventional hybrid systems in its configuration and choice of components. Uniquely, an electrical front axle drive with two electric motors each developing 60 kW supplements the familiar 480 hp (353 kW) four-litre flat-six ‘boxer’ petrol engine at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Consequently, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid has four driven wheels, offering even greater traction and agility.

A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries of a conventional hybrid-powered road car, this 911 features an electric flywheel power generator – mounted inside the cockpit beside the driver – that delivers energy to the electric motors on the front axle.

The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor – with its rotor capable of spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm – and stores energy mechanically as rotation, or kinetic, energy. The flywheel generator is charged-up whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators.

The driver is able to call upon this extra energy from the charged flywheel generator at his command for competitive advantage, such as when accelerating out of a bend or overtaking. The flywheel generator is slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode and able to supply up to 120 kW to the two electric motors at the front axle from its resource of kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately 6 – 8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted into heat, and thus wasted, upon every application of the brakes is now converted highly efficiently into additional drive power.

Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This again increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, by reducing the weight of the fuel tank or making pit stops less frequent, for example.

Porsche Intelligent Performance
The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche and defined as more power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions – on the race track and on the road. Already, customers can buy a Porsche 911 coupe with a six-cylinder 345 bhp engine which can return nearly 30mpg Combined and produces just 225 g/km CO2; a feat unrivalled in its performance class and just one example of the application of Porsche Intelligent Performance to maintain outstanding driving dynamics yet lower running costs and environmental impact.

Porsche Cars North America announced today that the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo will arrive at its U.S. dealers this week and go on sale on January 30. This is only three months after the debut of the highly acclaimed Panamera, Porsche’s first Gran Turismo and sports car for four.

Porsche traditionally has emphasized efficiency, but the new flagship 911 gives a new meaning to its high-performance label. While its acceleration, braking and handling capabilities make it a true super sports car, it goes about its business with a thriftiness that is equally remarkable and by no means the norm in its class. With 20 more horsepower, and a 13 percent increase in fuel economy, the new 911 Turbo is indeed more powerful and more efficient.

“We are very excited to welcome the all-new 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo into the family,” said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “More than ever, this supercar is a technological tour de force, and the seemingly unanimous accolades from the media support what we already believe; this is the best 911 Turbo ever.”

The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo features the first entirely new engine in its storied 35-year history. The new flat-six boxer engine now delivers 500 horsepower, 20 more than the previous power plant. Maximum torque is up by 15 to 516 lb. ft. when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo.

All of this means that the new 911 Turbo can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds when combined with the new, highly acclaimed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Top track speed is 194 mph for both the Coupe and the Cabriolet models and its EPA estimates are a best-in-class 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the new Coupe when equipped with the PDK transmission.

“The Porsche 911 Turbo has always represented the pinnacle of the 911 model line since it was first introduced in 1974,” said von Platen. “Now, 35 years later, the Turbo is still considered the standard when looking for the perfect combination of supercar performance with everyday drivability.”
