The new Range Rover Evoque has been named Stuff Magazine’s 2011 Car of the Year in the annual technology award ceremony held at London’s Globe Theatre last night.

The Evoque, which went on sale in the UK in September, has already tallied up 23 international awards. The new Range Rover fought off stiff competition from the Ferrari FF, Ford Focus, Renault Twizy, Nissan Leaf and Mini Coupe in the Stuff Car of the Year category. The editorial team considered the six entrants based on a combination of technology, design and style, on which the Evoque excelled on all fronts.

Scoring top honours, the Range Rover Evoque was chosen as the outright winner in the car of the year category due to its class leading technology, exhibiting novel features such as Terrain ResponseTM providing all weather, all surface capability and Adaptive DynamicsTM with MagnarideTM giving an ever compliant ride.

The judges consisting of the Stuff Magazine editorial team, with consultation from industry experts at Autocar, also praised Land Rover’s cutting edge Dual ScreenTM technology permitting the driver and passenger to see two different images on the same screen at the same time. The Evoque was also commended for its 825W Meridian audio system which is the first example of the collaboration between the two British marques.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Stuff Magazine Editor, Will Findlater, said: “For combining the off-road capabilities of a Range Rover and leading technology with the desirability of a Blade Runner space car, the Range Rover Evoque just had to win it for us.”

Land Rover Design Studio Director, David Saddington collected the award and said: “The Stuff Gadget Award means a lot to us at Land Rover and it is fantastic to win Stuff Magazine’s inaugural Car of the Year Award.

I am really happy to pick it up on behalf of the entire Land Rover team who put so much hard work into the design and engineering – it is great to be recognised for leading edge and innovative technology wrapped in such a fantastic design.”

The exceptional 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engines in the Range Rover Sport now offer even greater efficiencies, with reduced CO2, improved fuel economy and an increase in power for 2012. The output of the 245hp engine has been increased to 256hp whilst CO2emissions have been reduced from 243g/km to 230g/km.

These improvements are partly due to the introduction of the new, highly-efficient, ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic gearbox, combining smooth shifting and improved fuel economy. The combined fuel economy has improved from 30.7mpg to 32.1mpg.In conjunction with the new 8-speed gearbox, the Range Rover Sport SDV6 comes equipped with the ‘Drive Select’ rotary gear shift and steering wheel-mounted paddle shift.

All EU5 SDV6 models are equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) making them among the cleanest diesel engines on the market.

The awe-inspiring 5.0 LR-V8 Supercharged remains unchanged for 2012, continuing to offer supreme power delivering 0-60mph in under 6.0 seconds and sublime refinement.

Design and equipment levels have moved up a level too with colour changes to exterior detailing and new interior colour ways for the Autobiography Sport. A new powered single piece tailgate has also been introduced across the range for 2012, enabling drivers to set their desired lift height.

For the first time on the Range Rover Sport, the next generation 7-inch touch-screen is available with optional Dual View technology, allowing the driver to view the navigation display whilst the passenger watches TV or a DVD whilst listening on WhiteFireTM headphones. The rear seat entertainment package has also been enhanced with the availability of WhiteFireTM wireless technology.

Significant specification and performance improvements have been made to the

Hi-ICE and Premium audio systems, offering a staggering 825W of power through 17 speakers on the Premium Harmon Kardon LOGIC 7. The new ‘Say What You See’ voice command helps the driver learn commands with useful step-by-step screen prompts and allows the use of spoken short codes too.

“The enhancements to the 2012 Range Rover Sport will ensure this car retains its position as one of the most economical and dynamic high performance SUVs on the market today. With greater levels of diesel engine efficiency, lower fuel emissions and exciting new features, the Range Rover Sport continues to live up to its reputation for power and refinement,” said Colin Green, Land Rover UK Managing Director.

5.0 LR-V8 supercharged engine continues to lead the pack

Land Rover’s remarkable 5.0 LR-V8 supercharged petrol engine continues to head the Range Rover Sport powertrain range in 2012. Developing 510hp and 625Nm

torque it set new standards in petrol engine design when it was introduced, packed as it is with innovation design features aimed at boosting both performance and economy.

Powered tailgate for greater convenience

A new powered restyled tailgate has been introduced across the range for 2012. Operated by the button located on the fascia, the key fob or tailgate, the lift height can now be set by simply holding the tailgate at the desired height and pressing the tailgate button for 10 seconds. The height can be overridden to accommodate other drivers, providing effortless use and greater convenience to the user. The tailgate has been made from aluminium for added weight reduction.

Enhanced interior and external design revisions across the range

The external design and interiors of the Range Rover Sport, Autobiography Sport and Limited Edition are all upgraded for 2012.

For the Range Rover Sport, there are changes to the rear tailgate graphics to create a distinctive new look and a Gloss Black treatment to the headlight inners and grille surround. The SE derivative now sports a Dark Atlas grille whilst the HSE and Supercharged take on the Light Atlas. The Supercharged model is also fitted with a new 20″ alloy wheel finished in Sparkle Silver with high-gloss lacquer.

Infotainment levels significantly upgraded for 2012

The introduction of the Hi-ICE and Premium audio and infotainment systems sees a significant upgrade for the 2012 Range Rover Sport. There’s new connectivity supporting DVD audio formats on the Hi-Line and Premium systems, a Hard Disc Drive Music server, Dual Tuner to give a seamless signal, iPod and video streaming by USB, audio streaming by Bluetooth and two USB ports are located in the console lid. Rear seat entertainment is further enhanced with the availability of WhiteFireTM wireless technology incorporating cordless headphones.

The Hi-ICE Harman Kardon System has been upgraded from 9-speakers to 11-speakers and the output boosted from 240W to a substantial 380W. The optional premium Harman Kardon LOGIC 7 system has seen the most dramatic improvement, from 14 to 17 speakers and an almost unbelievable increase in output power from 480W to a staggering 825W.

For the first time on a Range Rover Sport, the next generation 7-inch touch-screen is available with Dual View technology. Dual View first appeared on the Range Rover for 2010, allowing the driver to view the navigation display whilst the passenger watches a DVD. When the Dual View screen is selected a single set of WhiteFireTM headphones are included to enable to listen to a soundtrack independently of the driver.

Hard Disc Navigation systems include Traffic Message Channel (TMC) and destination entry by voice. The new ‘Say What You See’ voice command helps the driver learn commands with useful step-by-step screen prompts and allows the use of spoken short codes. There’s also a new 7-day timer for the Park Heater.

HSE Luxury Pack

A Luxury Pack is also available on the 3.0 SDV6 HSE bringing equipment levels close to that of Supercharged models.
The new Range Rover Evoque passed an important milestone today when the first production vehicle was driven off the line at Land Rover’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool.

Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO, Ralf Speth together with JLR executive officers, union representatives and employees, gathered to celebrate the start of new Range Rover Evoque production. The first car to come off the line will be donated to the British Motor Industry Heritage trust.

“The Evoque is an incredibly exciting vehicle that joins a product range which across both of our brands is the strongest we have ever had – and it fits in perfectly.” commented Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer.” The teams that have designed engineered and built the new Evoque, working together with our research and supplier partners, can be immensely proud of their achievement. Worldwide interest in our new car has been exceptional, with 18,000 customer orders received from customers eager to be among the first to own the new Range Rover.

Halewood Operations is central to the success of the Evoque, with the workforce doubling to more than 3,000 employees in order to deliver the new model. Seventy-five per cent of production is destined for export to more than 170 countries around the world, adding around £2 billion to the UK economy. Moreover, 50 per cent of the components in new Evoque are made in Britain, with contracts worth another £2 billion awarded to more than 40 UK supplier businesses.

“It is a groundbreaking product, a Range Rover with concept car looks, lightweight technologies and the capability to deliver 50mpg fuel economy. At the same time it’s still a true Range Rover that’s agile, nimble, designed to survive in the urban jungle and capable of tackling the toughest climates and terrains thanks to Land Rover’s legendary all-wheel drive expertise.” Speth added

The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of 40 new product actions that Jaguar Land Rover will carry out in the next five years in the most ambitious market offensive in the history of its two brands. This product creation programme is supported by annual investment of £1.5 billion in developing new models, engines, technologies and vehicle lines.

Currently Jaguar Land Rover directly employs almost 19,000 people in the UK, and indirectly supports up to 140,000 further jobs through its supply chain, dealer network and associated business operations. Its success is reflected in after-tax profits of £1.043 billion for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

Land Rover has today announced that new Range Rover Evoque prices in the UK will start from £27,955 for an eD4 Pure 5-door 6 Speed manual 2WD model. The 4WD equivalent is priced at £28,705.

With a choice of three engines, two body styles, three design themes and a wide range of options and accessories, the new Range Rover Evoque offers customers significant choice across a range of price points. The top-of-the-range Si4 6 Speed automatic Dynamic coupé with LUX pack is available for £44,320.

The Range Rover Evoque will be offered in both 5-door and Coupé forms and will go on-sale from September 2011. A smooth and refined powertrain line-up is available with a choice of state-of-the-art diesel or petrol engines.

The updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel has 150PS or 190PS derivatives. The 2WD (on-sale early 2012) Coupé version combined with the 150 PS 2.2-litre engine is set to achieve sub 130g/km CO2*.

A wide range of personalisation opportunities are also available, allowing customers to fully tailor the Evoque to individual tastes and requirements.

Options available include 12 exterior colours, three contrasting roof treatments, seven alloy wheel designs, 16 contrasting interiors and a full sized, fixed, panoramic glass roof. A new online configurator goes live today, making it simple for customers to create their perfect Range Rover Evoque.

Design themes

In place of the conventional equipment grade hierarchy, three defining design themes have been developed for the Evoque: Pure, with a contemporary feel; Prestige, which majors on luxury and Dynamic, which embraces a bold and sporting character.

Each theme has a distinct appeal in terms of exterior styling, interior appointments and equipment specifications, which offer the highest level of on-board comfort, entertainment, communications and convenience.

Pure

Evoque Pure is the purest expression of the original LRX concept. On the outside it is distinguished by the high-gloss black detailing across the tailgate and along the waistline, with a dark ‘Atlas’ finish to the grille and eye-catching side fender blades and, on the Coupé, bonnet louvres. As standard, Pure models come with 18-inch Sparkle Silver alloy wheels.

Inside, the seats are finished in grain leather, and satin brushed aluminium is used for the centre console trim. Highlights of the standard equipment on board include heated front seats, an 8-inch high-resolution touch screen display, climate control air conditioning, an 11-speaker Meridian audio system with subwoofer, push-button start, BluetoothTM for mobile phone connection and audio streaming, twin USB ports, which support portable audio connectivity and cruise control.

The handling and safety systems include Hill Launch Assist, rear parking sensors and, on 4WD versions, Terrain ResponseTM to set up the vehicle for different off-road environments, and Hill Descent Control.

Prestige

Luxury informs every element of the Evoque Prestige models, from the exterior bright ‘Atlas’ detailing and 19-inch Diamond Turned alloy wheels, to the fine Oxford full leather interior in a selection of warm and inviting colour schemes with real wood finishers, tailored carpet mats and chrome tread plates. Metallic paint is also provided as standard and Prestige models benefit from xenon headlamps with signature LED lighting and front fog lamps.

Similarly, the equipment specification delivers the highest quality features, with an HDD satellite navigation system with dynamic route guidance and voice control option. It also displays 4WD performance information and provides an audio server for storing uncompressed digital music files. There is also a rear camera, front parking sensors and automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers.

Dynamic

The Dynamic theme adds a real sporting presence to Evoque with the addition of deeper body colour sills and bumpers, and black-finished mirrors, grille and side fender blades that are all exclusive to the design theme. Add the 20-inch Sparkle Silver alloys to the mix and there is no mistaking that the Evoque Dynamic means business.

Inside the cabin detailed touches reinforce the theme with aluminium pedal covers, a textured metal finish to the centre console and perforated leather around the steering wheel and (manual) gearshift. The striking exterior of the Dynamic is complemented by a range of bold interior colour schemes.

Dynamic models also come with Adaptive Dynamics featuring MagnaRideTM as standard for and an even sharper ride and handling. Adaptive Dynamics is also available as an option for Prestige SD4 models at a cost of £1150.

Pure with TECH Pack

Many of the key technology features available in the range have been brought together in a TECH Pack to enhance the Pure theme even further. The pack includes the following additional features:

HDD premium navigation system

Front parking aid

Heated windscreen and windscreen washers

Automatic headlamps

Headlamp power-wash

Rain-sensing windscreen wipers

Opting for the TECH Pack represents excellent value, adding just £1,900 to the standard Pure prices.

Prestige and Dynamic with LUX Pack

The LUX Pack for Prestige and Dynamic models is also available and offers greater convenience, on-board entertainment and safety. It introduces the following items:

Powered tailgate and panoramic glass roof with power blinds

825W Meridian surround sound audio system

8-inch high-resolution dual-view touch-screen display

Analogue/digital television

Auto-dimming rear view mirror

Keyless entry

‘Park Assist’ system

With its stylish and sporting appearance, enhanced by extra practicality and greater family appeal, the 5-Door Range Rover Evoque joins the stunning coupé model to create a highly desirable line-up that will transform the premium compact SUV segment.

Like the coupé, the 5-Door Range Rover Evoque remains faithful to the spirit of the groundbreaking Land Rover LRX concept car, offering an innovative new interpretation of the original cross-coupé design.

The 5-Door Evoque also stays true to the core values of the Range Rover brand, providing premium levels of craftsmanship, luxury, performance and renowned Land Rover all-terrain capability, but in a more compact package.

“The addition of the 5-Door to the Range Rover Evoque line-up extends the appeal of our brand still further,” said Land Rover’s Managing Director Phil Popham.

“While retaining everything that’s great about the Range Rover Evoque coupé, this new 5-Door bodystyle will offer customers even more choice, greater practicality, versatility and flexibility. The launch of the Evoque in 2011 will expand and revitalise the global appeal of the Range Rover marque.”

Coupé style and 5-Door versatility

The 5-Door Range Rover Evoque offers an exciting new interpretation of the LRX concept car design, combining the dramatic stance and dynamic appeal of the original cross-coupé with the enhanced functionality offered by a 5-Door format.

“The 5-Door Range Rover Evoque has the same strong emotional appeal as the coupé, while offering the superior versatility of a family vehicle,” said Land Rover Design Director, Gerry McGovern.

“The key lines remain intact – the dramatic rising beltline, muscular shoulder running the length of the car, and the distinctive taper to the floating roofline – but with a slightly higher rear roof. The finished vehicle offers impressive levels of space and versatility whilst retaining the overall essence, visual robustness and jewel-like detailing of the coupé.”

The more capacious interior of the 5-Door Range Rover Evoque has not been achieved by enlarging the compact footprint of the coupé model: the overall length and width remain identical.

Like the coupé, smart design, meticulous engineering and clever packaging has ensured that the 5-Door Evoque delivers the core Range Rover values of luxury, refined performance and all-terrain capability while remaining true to the spirit of the LRX concept design.

Interior quality and versatility

The cabin of the Range Rover Evoque is lavishly appointed with premium quality materials and an elegance befitting of a Range Rover interior.

Customers can specify soft, premium leather and beautifully tailored, twin-needle stitching providing a luxurious finish to almost every surface of the instrument panel, doors and seats.

Measuring 30mm taller than the coupé model, the 5-Door Range Rover Evoque adds further space and versatility to the luxurious cabin. Rear seat passengers benefit from over 50mm more shoulder room, along with generous headroom which compares very favourably to traditional sporting saloons.

A full-sized glass panoramic roof enhances the sensation of space and comfort by flooding the interior with natural light, and offers even greater headroom for all occupants.

For growing families, the 5-Door Evoque provides the versatility and luggage space of a compact station wagon.

The rear seats, with seat belts and head restraints for three passengers, have 60/40 folding seat squabs and are equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounts. When required, luggage capacity can be expanded to a substantial 1445 litres.

Sporting dynamics

On the open road, the 5-Door Range Rover Evoque offers a polished driving experience that combines dynamic and sporty handling with responsive, effortless performance and refinement.

“The 5-Door Range Rover Evoque has the same sporting character as the coupé,” said Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes. “We have focused on ensuring that the car is agile and fun to drive, so that customers have a rewarding experience, even in day-to-day urban driving. Advanced technologies such as MagneRide™ mean we can ensure that this dynamic prowess does not come at the cost of top-quality refinement or comfort.”

The optional Adaptive Dynamics system with advanced MagneRide™ dampers provides an exceptional balance between a supple, controlled ride and sharper handling responses.

Capable off-road

Drivers who take their Range Rover Evoque off-road will be reassured to know that, in addition to extremely generous ground clearance, the car has better breakover and departure angles than other compact SUVs.

The Evoque will be the first Range Rover to offer customers a choice between a full-time four-wheel-drive system, which delivers outstanding performance and traction on all surfaces, and a low carbon, front-wheel-drive option for further enhanced fuel economy.

The Range Rover Evoque’s formidable all-terrain potential is enhanced by the latest version of the company’s signature Terrain ResponseTM system.

Powertrains

The 5-Door Range Rover Evoque shares its turbocharged powertrain line-up with the Coupé model. The state-of-the-art diesel and petrol engines offer smooth and responsive performance, blending four-cylinder efficiency with six-cylinder refinement and power.

Customers can choose between two comprehensively updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel derivatives, with 190PS or 150PS.

In the 5-Door model, the front-wheel drive Range Rover Evoque with the 150PS 2.2-litre engine achieves sub 135g/km* CO2.

A new 240PS, 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing for exceptional driveability and fuel efficiency.

Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes, said: “We have combined state-of-the-art powertrains with a lightweight bodyshell and a range of low-carbon technologies to deliver fuel efficiency which is outstanding for a premium SUV.”

Innovation

Like the coupé model, the 5-Door Evoque benefits from the same high-end innovative technologies as the larger Range Rovers. An intuitive control system and touch-screen display combines a stylish, uncluttered layout, state-of-the-art functionality with class-leading ease of use.

The display is available with dual-view technology, so that driver and passenger can view independent content.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone and audio streaming, plus a range of USB and auxiliary inputs for iPods and other portable devices.

The Evoque is the first Range Rover to offer breathtaking new sound systems developed in partnership with the high-end audio specialist Meridian. The premium Meridian offering is an 825W, 17-speaker system that delivers the ultimate in surround-sound performance.

Other features available to Range Rover Evoque customers include:

Park Assist for automated parallel parking
Blind Spot Monitoring system
Surround Camera System with five digital cameras, including a reversing system
Full dual-zone automatic climate control, featuring a Park Heater timer facility
Hard drive navigation system
DAB/FM/AM/Sirius tuners, with hard drive virtual 10xCD multiplayer
Digital and Satellite TV, and DVD playback
Rear seat entertainment package, with 8-inch video screens, digital wireless headphones and touch screen remote control
Keyless entry system and powered tailgate
Adaptive headlamps with Automatic High Beam Assist
Heated windscreen, front seats and steering wheel
Three design themes

The 5-Door Range Rover Evoque follows the coupé model by offering customers the choice of three main vehicle design themes, each with its own distinctive character, exterior treatment and carefully co-ordinated interior package.

‘Pure’combines the stunning concept-car exterior with a stylish, clean interior in neutral colours. Soft-touch wrapped materials on the major surfaces contrast with the metal brushed aluminium trim.

‘Prestige’ is theultimate in Range Rover luxury, combining a bespoke exterior that includes unique, 19-inch wheels and sparkling metallic details with an interior that is almost entirely leather-wrapped.

‘Dynamic’ brings a bolder exterior with 20-inch wheels and unique bumpers, sills, grille and tailpipes for a more assertive, confident stance. Contrasting roof and spoiler colours are available, while the premium sports interior offers sports seats with splashes of bright contrast colour.

Both coupé and 5-Door models of the Range Rover Evoque will be manufactured at Land Rover’s multi award-winning Halewood plant in Merseyside, UK. The car will go on sale in more than 160 markets worldwide from summer 2011. Prices will start from £30,000/ 35,000E.

The Range Rover Evoque brings the acclaimed Land Rover’s LRX concept car into production reality, faithfully capturing the original design of this landmark cross-coupé concept.

In keeping with the ethos of Range Rover, the Evoque delivers premium levels of craftsmanship, luxury, performance and renowned Land Rover all-terrain capability into a shrink-wrapped more compact package.

“These are exciting times for our business,” said CEO Dr Ralf Speth. “Not only will the Range Rover Evoque increase our worldwide market share, it helps to define a new segment for premium compact SUVs that are more sporting and stylish.”

Sustainability

Offering CO2 emissions sub 130g/km* and fuel economy of 58mpg* combined, the Evoque is the lightest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever and a strong demonstration of the marque’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

“This is a highly relevant and contemporary vehicle that will suit the modern needs of our customers,” said Land Rover’s managing director Phil Popham. “The Range Rover Evoque will appeal to a new group of customers who may not have considered a Range Rover before.”

Lightweight construction techniques and the addition of a front-wheel drive variant ensure optimum efficiency is achieved. The new state-of-the-art petrol and diesel engines come with direct injection and stop-start. The Range Rover Evoque also adopts low CO2 systems such as Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) and is built to maximise end of life recyclability.

Design

The Range Rover Evoque’s dramatic exterior is based directly on the LRX concept car, which drew worldwide acclaim for its fresh interpretation of classic Range Rover design cues.

Smart design and meticulous engineering has allowed the LRX concept to be turned into reality without compromising the core Range Rover values of luxury, refined performance and all-terrain capability.

“The Evoque marks a bold evolution of Range Rover design. With its dramatic rising beltline, a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, and a distinctive taper to the floating roofline, the Range Rover Evoque adopts a very dynamic profile with a powerful and athletic stance.” said Land Rover design director, Gerry McGovern.

Interior quality

The Range Rover Evoque’s cabin is lavishly appointed with premium quality materials and an elegance befitting of a Range Rover interior.

Customers can specify soft, premium leather and beautifully tailored, twin-needle stitching providing a luxurious finish to almost every surface of the instrument panel, doors and seats.

A lower driving position offers a more sporting feel but retains Range Rover’s renowned Command Driving Position. Headroom is generous compared with traditional sporting saloons, despite the low-profile coupe roofline.

Dynamics

On the open road, the Range Rover Evoque offers a polished driving experience that combines dynamic and sporty handling with responsive, effortless performance and refinement.

Murray Dietsch, director of Land Rover programmes, said: “We’ve tuned the Range Rover Evoque’s chassis and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) to deliver precise and responsive steering at lower speeds, making the car nimble and fun to drive.”

This sporting character has not been achieved at the expense of comfort and refinement. Adaptive Dynamics uses advanced MagneRide dampers to provide a supple, controlled ride. The suspension delivers even tighter body control, with flatter handling and sharper responses.

Capable off-road

Drivers who take their Range Rover Evoque off-road will be reassured to know that, in addition to extremely generous ground clearance, the car has significantly better breakover, approach and departure angles than other compact SUVs.

The Evoque will be the first Range Rover to offer customers a choice between a full-time four-wheel-drive system, which delivers outstanding performance and traction on all surfaces, and an even lower carbon, front-wheel-drive option for further enhanced fuel economy.

The Range Rover Evoque’s formidable all-terrain potential is enhanced by the latest version of the company’s signature Terrain ResponseTM system.

Powertrains

The Range Rover Evoque’s turbocharged powertrain line-up offers smooth and responsive performance, blending four-cylinder efficiency with six-cylinder refinement and power.

Customers can choose between two advanced 2.2-litre turbodiesel derivatives, with either 190PS or 150PS.

The front-wheel drive Range Rover Evoque with the 150PS 2.2-litre engine achieves 58mpg* and sub 130g/km* CO2. The four-wheel-drive 2.2-litre 150PS delivers 50mpg* and sub 145g/km* CO2.

A new 240PS, 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing for exceptional driveability and fuel efficiency with a 0-60mph time of 7.1 seconds.

Murray Dietsch, director of Land Rover programmes, said: “These impressive figures have been achieved by the product development team’s commitment to delivering a compact and weight-efficient product, with no compromise on durability and robustness.”

Innovation

The Evoque benefits from the same high-end innovative technologies as the larger Range Rovers. An intuitive control system and touch-screen display combines a stylish, uncluttered layout and state-of-the-art functionality with class-leading ease of use.

The premium Meridian system offers an 825W, 17-speaker system that delivers the ultimate in surround-sound performance.

Other features available to Range Rover Evoque customers include:

Park Assist for automated parallel parking

Blind Spot Monitoring system

Surround Camera System with five digital cameras, including a reversing system

Full dual-zone automatic climate control, featuring a Park Heater timer facility

Hard drive navigation system with off-road navigation capability

DAB/FM/AM/Cirrus tuners, with hard drive virtual 10xCD multiplayer

Digital and Satellite TV, and DVD playback

Rear seat entertainment package, with 8-inch video screens, digital wireless

headphones and touch screen remote control

Keyless entry system and powered tailgate

Adaptive headlamps with auto headlamp dipping

Heated windscreen, front seats and steering wheel

Three design themes

The Range Rover Evoque offers customers more choice with three main vehicle design themes, each with its own distinctive character, exterior treatment and carefully co-ordinated interior package.

‘Pure’ combines the stunning concept-car exterior with a stylish, clean interior in neutral colours. Soft-touch wrapped materials on the major surfaces contrast with the metal brushed aluminium trim.

‘Prestige’ is the ultimate in Range Rover luxury, combining a bespoke exterior that includes unique, 19-inch wheels and sparkling metallic details with an interior that is almost entirely leather-wrapped.

The Range Rover Evoque will be manufactured at Land Rover’s multi award-winning Halewood plant in Merseyside, UK. The car will go on sale in more than 160 markets worldwide from summer 2011. Prices will start from £30,000 in the UK.

Land Rover is making no secret of the operation – its design team has fitted ten prototypes with funky camouflage wraps, to introduce the new car in ten key cities worldwide.

Ordinarily prototypes are disguised for discretion, but these ten are intended to be seen. The funky camouflage imagery is actually a GPS mapping trail of ten key cities for Evoque, with each vehicle saying ‘Hello’ to its city. It signals the eagerly awaited global launch of the new Evoque.

These unmissable vehicles represent London, New York, Sao Paulo, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney, Shanghai and Moscow and will all be spotted testing around the globe. They are just a small proportion of the hundreds of pre-production cars that will be rigorously evaluated over millions of miles to ensure the new Range Rover Evoque surpasses the highest standards of quality and reliability when it goes on sale in summer 2011.

Teams of engineers will travel to 20 countries to pit the Range Rover Evoque against the most extreme conditions on earth, ranging from the Arctic to the desert, from German Autobahns to Tokyo city traffic. Alongside the engineers, Land Rover is working with 120 unique component suppliers and carrying out in excess of 17,000 individual tests to examine every separate part and system.

Like all Range Rovers, the new Evoque will have been proven against all the elements when it goes on sale next summer.

“The development stage is crucial in the year leading up to launching the car,” said Murray Dietsch, director of Land Rover programmes. “No stone is left unturned; we have a team of experienced and skilled engineers who will work to a tight schedule to ensure we have a top quality vehicle to offer our customers.”

The new Range Rover Evoque is the smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient model the company has ever offered, and will be sold in 160 markets around the world.

The first official picture of the all-new compact Range Rover is released today, following an exclusive preview in London for guests attending a 40th birthday celebration of Range Rover held in partnership with VOGUE magazine*.

Named the Range Rover Evoque, this all-new coupé will join the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport line-up in the summer of 2011. It will be the smallest, lightest and most fuel efficient Range Rover ever produced. Customers have a choice of both a 4WD and a 2WD version, with a sub 130g/km CO2 demonstrating the Range Rover brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said: “Today is a very special occasion for Range Rover, not only are we celebrating 40 years of the brand, we are also demonstrating our exciting future by showing the all-new Range Rover Evoque. Range Rover is one of the most highly regarded and iconic vehicles in the history of motoring and has been a continuing success since we first introduced it in 1970. The all-new Range Rover Evoque, is an important step for the future continued success and growth of the brand. Customers can be confident that the new car will be premium, luxurious and just as special as the other Range Rover models. Its sporting looks and unique qualities will open the brand to a new group of customers who may not have considered a Range Rover product before.

“The all-new Range Rover Evoque will be built at our multi-award winning plant in Halewood, creating 1,000 new jobs in the Merseyside area, a fantastic boost to the UK economy. The Halewood plant has a reputation for excellence and quality and is recognised throughout the industry as a leader in Lean Manufacturing.

“The all-new Range Rover Evoque is a true global car and will be sold in over 160 countries. It was important to give the car a name that was instantly recognisable through language and cultural boundaries throughout the world. We wanted to create a new name which was innovative and different. A name which implies exclusivity and arouses emotions. Evoque is cosmopolitan and cross-continental, sophisticated and matches the car’s urban elegance,” he added.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said: “The Range Rover is an iconic design that has stood the test of time and it’s not difficult to see why. Like the current version, the original Range Rover is such a simple and memorable shape that is easily recognisable.

“The all-new Range Rover Evoque marks a bold evolution of Range Rover design, providing customers with a desirable, premium and compact car like SUV. In 2008 we introduced the LRX concept car: after a positive reception worldwide, the natural step for the business was to turn the LRX concept car into reality. Tonight we wanted to show the world that we have stayed true to our word and delivered a car that completely represents the spirit of the LRX concept.

“The all-new Range Rover Evoque will resonate with customers on an emotional level. Its unique silhouette accentuated by the distinctive falling roof and dramatic rising waistline creates a modern and relevant execution of the familiar Range Rover design language. This car makes a powerful statement of the Range Rover’s brand intent to appeal to a wider audience,” he added.

The all-new Range Rover Evoque will make its global public debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September and will go on sale from next summer.

A new, class-leading V8 diesel engine, new 8-speed transmission, two significant Terrain Response® upgrades and subtle external styling enhancements are amongst the features on the new 2011 Range Rover – on-sale in the UK from late September 2010.

“The 2011 Range Rover retains its position as one of the world’s most complete luxury vehicles. Its combination of reduced CO2 emissions and superior engine performance continue to make it a clear industry benchmark. And with the introduction of our all-new ‘super diesel’, we see the Range Rover delivering over 30mpg for the first time,” said Phil Popham, Land Rover managing director.

The LR-TDV8 4.4-litre with parallel sequential turbocharging replaces the outstanding LR-TDV8 3.6-litre and is unique to the Range Rover. The all-new LR-TDV8 combines superior power and massive torque with unparalleled levels of refinement. Despite the extra performance, this V8 engine is cleaner too, delivering even lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than its predecessor. The combined cycle fuel consumption of the new LR-TDV8 4.4-litre is 30.1mpg, making this the first Range Rover ever to better 30mpg.

With 313PS and 700Nm torque, the Range Rover’s new powertrain reduces CO2 emissions by an impressive 14 percent from 294g/km to 253g/km. The new diesel engine is helped in this respect by its marriage to a new, electronically controlled, ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic. This combination is enough to catapult the Range Rover from rest to 60mph in a mere 7.5 seconds and complete the 50mph-70mph dash in just 4.0 seconds while the top speed increases from 125mph to 130mph.

Available only on 4.4-litre LR-TDV8 models, this ‘smart’ transmission integrates with the diesel engine to deliver the most efficient operating regime in all conditions. To reflect the performance of the new 4.4-litre LR-TDV8, diesel models are fitted with the same Brembo-based braking system fitted to the 5.0-litre LR-V8 supercharged model. The system comprises 380mm ventilated front discs with unique, lightweight aluminium six-piston opposed action monoblock callipers. 365mm ventilated discs with single piston sliding callipers are fitted at the rear.

ZF 8HP70 automatic gearbox partners the 4.4-litre LR-TDV8

The new ZF 8HP70 8-speed transmission is tuned to take advantage of the LR-TDV8’s low end torque with torque converter lock-up being selected as early as possible to reduce slip and energy loss. The wider ratio spread, tall overdriven top gear and the fact that no more than two internal clutches are open at any one time all contribute to improved fuel economy and emissions.

Transmission Idle Control disengages 70 per cent of the drive when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling in Drive, significantly reducing consumption in the urban cycle. In cold conditions, the transmission selects a lower gear to promote fast warm up and get the engine up to its efficient operating temperature as soon as possible.

Driver controls include steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift as standard enabling the driver to take control of gear shifting manually. The CommandShift lever is replaced by a rotary knob for selecting park, reverse, neutral, drive or sport modes, the last of these optimising the gearbox response times for maximum acceleration, improved response and sharper upshifts. The selector knob is flush with the centre console when the ignition is switched off, rising up when it is switched on. To avoid confusion, the Terrain Response® Rotary Switch is replaced by a new Terrain Response® Optimisation Switch.

Paul Walker, chief programme engineer says: “The performance of our new LR-TDV8 can only be described as awe-inspiring. We are confident that the combination of reduced CO2 emissions, EU5 compliance and the massive increase in performance while delivering a huge improvement in fuel economy, is world class.”

For 2011, the Range Rover retains the same class-leading 5.0-litre LR-V8, supercharged petrol engine married to the ZF HP28 6-speed automatic transmission introduced in 2010. Developing 510PS and 625Nm torque the Supercharged LR-V8 will take the Range Rover from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds and remains the flagship model.

Subtle Exterior Design Revisions

Inside the cabin there are optional illuminated treadplates for the front doors and new transmission controls for the diesel model. Detail improvements to the exterior include new ‘Jupiter’ grilles and side vents for the diesel models.

A new Exterior Design Pack option gives customers the chance to give their Range Rover a more individual look and new colours and wheels have been added to the range. The Exterior Design Pack comprises of a revised front bumper with fog lamp surrounds, front grille and side vents in Titan finish, revised side sills, rear bumper and stainless steel exhaust finishers.

The range of exterior paint colours has been expanded with two further choices, Fuji White (replacing Alaska White) and Baltic Blue (replacing Buckingham Blue).

Terrain Response® Enhancements

The 2011 Range Rover is further enhanced by improvements to the Terrain Response® system in the form of Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Hill Start Assist retains the initial driver-generated brake pressure long enough for the foot to move from brake pedal to throttle, without the car rolling backwards. Gradient Acceleration Control is designed to provide safety cover on severe gradients when the driver does not have Hill Descent Control engaged.

Autobiography Black: a very special 40th anniversary limited edition

The ultimate incarnation of the Range Rover, the Autobiography Black 40th anniversary limited edition is quite simply the last word in bespoke vehicles.

With a unique finish in Barolo Black, the exterior also features 20-inch alloy wheels, Diamond Turned, a unique front grille with Titan grille mesh, a bright chrome grille ‘U’ edge and black grille surround. Side vents have a new mesh set off by bright chrome bars and a black vent surround. There are body coloured door handles and of course, the tailgate badge, ‘Autobiography Black’.

Inside, there’s a choice of the standard colourway in Jet, or two colourways unique to the Autobiography Black – Jet and Ivory, or Jet and Pimento. The Autobiography Black logo is repeated throughout the interior where it is embossed on the rear seat armrest and appears on the four unique, Grand Black door veneers. Front door sill tread plates are illuminated with the words ‘Range Rover’ and there’s a half wood Grand Black steering wheel. Supercharged models also offer gearknob veneers.

“At the top of the Range, the new Autobiography Black 40th anniversary limited edition offers customers the option of complete exclusivity with unique colourway combinations as well as striking interior and exterior design features. Only 700 will be made globally, emphasising the exclusivity of this limited edition,” added Land Rover design director, Gerry McGovern.

After several months of intensive research and development, Superchips’ technicians pinpointed a number of performance enhancement opportunities within the Range Rover’s ECU to create an improved map for the 3.6-litre, twin turbocharged V8 diesel machine.

The Range Rover’s ECU settings were carefully optimised to remove any compromises on Superchips’ state of the art four wheel drive chassis dynomometer and fully validated via a comprehensive road testing program, which highlighted a transformation in both performance and driveability.

Post remap, Superchips has boosted the Range Rover TDV8’s power from a measured 265bhp to 315bhp, representing a stunning 50bhp peak gain, with a maximum mid range increase of 53bhp at 3507rpm.

Similarly, peak torque is boosted from 633Nm (462lb.ft) to a mighty 798Nm (582lb.ft,) at just 2263rpm, with a maximum gain of 191Nm (139lb.ft) at 2803rpm.

Significant improvements in driveability are assured, as the Superchip remapped Range Rover TDV8 boasts over 200bhp and crucially, an immense 750Nm (547lb.ft) of torque from just 1800rpm upwards, guaranteeing swift and effortless progress.

In addition, the ECU remap, allied to the extra torque of the Superchips upgrade, realises fuel economy improvements on the Range Rover TDV8, largely because the increased urgency at smaller throttle openings translates into fuel consumption gains in the order of 10%.

Superchips customers can purchase the conversion and upload it in minutes to their vehicle using the market leading bluefin handset. No technical skills are required as customers simply plug in the bluefin handset to the Range Rover TDV8’s OBDII diagnostics port, then follow the on screen instructions. A few minutes later the Superchips program upload is complete and the vehicle is ready for use.

As part of this process, the original factory Range Rover TDV8 ECU map is stored on the bluefin handset for future use, so that converting the car back to standard is a swift and simple ‘plug and go’ task.

Alternatively, customers have the option of visiting one of approximately 100 Superchips dealerships in the UK who will undertake the upgrade.

Either way, Superchips’ customers can also be assured that the conversion is covered by a full Customer Service Guarantee and an industry-leading warranty.

Suitable for Range Rover TDV8 and Sport variants produced from March 2006 onwards, the Superchips ECU remap is available now directly from Superchips and its UK dealer network, priced at £445.00 including VAT @ 17.5%.

The poll received 7500 votes with the Range Rover taking 18 per cent, nearly a fifth of the votes.

The British-built Range Rover was launched in 2001 to widespread acclaim. In the Autocar poll it beat off stiff competition from the MkII Lotus Elise, also built in the UK, which took second place with 12.5 per cent of the vote, and the Bugatti Veyron and Nissan GT-R, which each polled 8.8 per cent of the total to finish joint third.

Commenting on the Range Rover’s victory, Autocar’s Editor Chas Hallett said: ‘The Range Rover is a fine choice for Car of the Decade. Most polls like this have results skewed towards the latter end of their timescale, but not this one. That the Range Rover was launched nine years ago yet remains a benchmark speaks volumes for the brilliance of its design – and for the taste of the people who voted for it.

‘Both Land Rover and Lotus deserve a pat on the back for producing such iconic vehicles that still appeal through the passage of time. It’s a great achievement.’

Autocar’s Associate Editor, Hilton Holloway, championed the Range Rover, saying: ‘The Range Rover defined a new type of luxury at launch, technically sophisticated, beautifully detailed, modern and yet retrospective. It has an overwhelming presence, but in way that the majority could and can still admire.’

The second-placed car, the MkII Lotus Elise, was also in production for the vast majority of the past decade: the British roadster has defined the classic sportscar and Lotus’s success during that time.

In equal third-place, the Bugatti Veyron and Nissan GT-R, meanwhile, approached performance on a very different tack.

The million-Euro, 252mph Bugatti Veyron became easily the fastest production car in the world when it was launched in 2005.

Nissan’s 2009 GT-R is a recent introduction but offers staggering performance at a (relatively) affordable price of under £60,000.

Other notable placings in the survey went to the Lotus Elise-based Vauxhall VX220 Ford Focus, Audi R8, Rolls-Royce Phantom, Tata Nano and MkII Toyota Prius.

Autocar’s resident car experts nominated and championed 17 great cars launched within the past ten years for readers to choose from – or voters could suggest their own star car.

1 Range Rover
2 Lotus Elise Mk2
3= Bugatti Veyron and Nissan GT-R
5 Vauxhall VX220
6 Toyota Prius Mk2
7 Tata Nano
8 Mini Cooper
9 Ford Focus
10 Jaguar XF

Holland & Holland, makers of the world’s finest sporting guns and Overfinch, designers and manufacturers of exclusive Range Rover enhancements, have joined forces to create the ultimate luxury off-roader.

The Holland & Holland Range Rover was conceived with a single intention: to create the ultimate all purpose, all season, luxury supercar for the discerning few. Designers and engineers at both Holland & Holland and Overfinch have worked together to create a car that embodies Holland & Holland’s unique sporting heritage and Overfinch’s bespoke craftsmanship. The result is a quintessentially English take on motoring luxury.

Based on either the 5.0 litre 503 bhp Supercharged or TDV8 versions of the new 2010 MY car, the Holland & Holland Overfinch features a raft of enhancements that make it unmistakably something very special. On the outside, it has discreet but effective styling changes manufactured from OEM grade thermoplastic polymers, which give unsurpassed quality and durability.

Bodywork is painted in one of four unique exterior paint colours, including Holland & Holland Tintern Green. Two-tone

paintwork, similar to that of a Rolls-Royce Phantom, is also available, as is black. Overfinch’s craftsmen take 130 man hours to paint and hand-polish the car, which gives a depth of colour and quality of finish that marks it out from its mass-produced brethren from a hundred yards. Orange peel, the cellulite-like effect that is visible on many cars considerably more expensive than this one, is banished by Overfinch craftsmen’s skill and hard work. The effect is completed by Overfinch’s iconic 20’ Tiger wheels (fitted with all season Mud & Snow tyres) and special cast exhaust outlets. A choice of 22’ wheels is an option for those not intending to venture off road, or for those who also possess a winter set.

But it is on the inside that the designers have really excelled themselves. Eight of Europe’s finest hides, of a grade so fine it is only normally used in private jets, dyed in seven exclusive tones, are used to create a cabin of rare luxury. Professionals from both Overfinch and Holland & Holland have worked closely with a colour and trim specialist to ensure that interiors and exteriors complement one another perfectly. A unique trim style covers the seats, doors, upper and lower dash board, centre and rear consoles and even the cubby box lid, which is both cleanly elegant in style and fiendishly expensive in terms of both labour and materials. Not for this car simple contrasting piping-the Holland & Holland Overfinch, even the contrasting colour signature stripes are cut from individual hides and trimmed to sit nearly flush with the leather surrounding them. As a result, it takes over 150 man hours just to trim the car. If the optional aviation-style quilted leather or Alcantara headlining is selected, it takes even longer.

The thirty one piece wood veneer kit blends seamlessly into the design of the rest of the car, including that of the gun cabinet and rear console. There is the choice of Olive Ash Gloss, European Burr Walnut with special diamond pattern inlay, Matt Gunstock Walnut and Piano Black Lacquer with silver inlays.

Only one hundred Holland & Holland Overfinches will be produced each year, and every one will be fitted with a special shotgun grade steel plaque, which features Holland & Holland’s trademark diamond inserts and ‘Royal’ scroll engraving, hand-made by Holland & Holland’s craftsmen at their Harrow Road factory. The steering wheel has been designed especially for the vehicle too, with a special ergonomic grip and steel inserts, decorated with a design to match the Holland & Holland engraving, or even that of a customer’s own shotgun.

Land Rover has confirmed today that a production version of its exciting LRX concept car will be built. The new car will debut next year and join the Range Rover line-up in 2011.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s state of the art Gaydon facility, the new Range Rover will be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.

The new car will be built at the multi award-winning plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, subject to quality and productivity agreements and will be sold in over 100 countries around the world.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said: ‘The production of a small Range Rover model is excellent news for our employees, dealers and customers. It is a demonstration of our commitment to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers, with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned.’

‘Feedback from our customer research also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet their expectations.’ Phil added.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said: ‘The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. It will be true to the concept and have many recognisable Range Rover design cues including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid ‘wheel-at-each-corner’ stance.’

More details of the new small Range Rover will be released next year.

Land Rover completes its introduction of the acclaimed new line-up for 2010 at the IAA International Motor Show, Frankfurt. Topping the bill is a new Range Rover Sport Autobiography limited edition and for the first time, a luxurious reclining rear seat package for the Range Rover.

Land Rover’s latest line-up sees exciting developments across the range, including more powerful new engines offering greater fuel efficiency, dynamic upgrades and striking exterior and interior design improvements for the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4.

‘With August sales up 11.6% against the same period last year, we are now starting to see early signs of stability in the UK market’ said John Edwards, managing director Land Rover UK. ‘We’re therefore convinced that one of the best ways to help keep things moving is to excite potential customers with new and improved vehicles. Our range for 2010 is without doubt our strongest ever, and early signs show that these new products are receiving an outstanding reception in the marketplace.’

Autobiography limited edition Sport versions join Range Rover Sport line-up

An unprecedented level of choice for Range Rover Sport customers is now available, with a stunning new Autobiography Sport limited edition, on 3.6 litre TDV8 and Supercharged derivatives. Available in a variety of themes, only 500 units will go on-sale in the UK featuring duo-tone premium leather interiors as well as unique exterior design cues including the grille, vents and 20′ diamond turned finish alloy wheels, all presented for the first time at the IAA.

All feature a dramatic new body kit which is tailored to accentuate the sophisticated style of the 2010 Range Rover Sport.

The Range Rover – now with enhanced rear seat luxury

For 2010, Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover offers a powerful new 5.0 litre supercharged LR-V8 engine (alongside the popular TDV8), revolutionary interior technologies and enhanced driving dynamics. Now, a series of further refinements are available as options across the range, with the focus on enhanced luxury for rear seat passengers.

Land Rover is introducing electronically-controlled reclining rear seats, which will be particularly valued by chauffeur-driven customers. Controlled by the rear passengers and available with heated and cooled functionality, four-way adjustable lumbar support and airline-style winged head restraints. Rear seat passengers can also enjoy significantly increased leg room by remotely moving the front passenger seat to its forward-most position (when the front passenger seat is unoccupied). The addition of laminated rear-door privacy glass significantly reduces interior noise levels too.

The peerless luxury and exclusivity provided by the Range Rover is given a further boost by the addition of four sumptuous new interior colour combinations on the Autobiography series, and the availability of the world-class Logic 7 1200W Harman Kardon High Dynamics audio system, with 15 independent channels driving 19 premium quality speakers.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography limited edition and additional new features on the Range Rover will be available in the UK from January 2010. Prices will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
