SEAT is celebrating a host of sales achievements in the UK, bucking both the trend in the new car market and the nation’s prevailing economic conditions in the process.

The dynamic Spanish car maker today confirms its best year here to date, with new car sales of 36,089 in 2011 for an all-time record market share of 1.86% (source: SMMT).

The exceptional performance – which includes an individual all-time best showing from SEAT’s most familiar model – sees the firm’s share of the UK new car market climb almost ten per cent versus 2010, and that in a market which is down by more than four per cent in the last 12 months.

The spectacular sales surge is no fluke, either. Official SMMT statistics show that the Spanish car maker’s share of the 2011 market is its third consecutive best here, while the sales total of more than 36,000 cars comfortably exceeds SEAT’s previous UK best of 34,790 registrations in 2007.

What’s more SEAT’s December market share of 2.08% easily beats the brand’s previous all-time record for the month of 1.65%.

SEAT’s enviable upward sales trajectory – it has seen consistent growth here since the global economic meltdown of 2008 – continues to defy the uncertain financial climate.

The Ibiza family of SC, 5dr and ST models remains SEAT’s soaraway best-seller, with 19,179 registrations in 2011: an all-time best for the Ibiza in a single year here.

The much-admired Leon five-door family hatch is a proud runner-up in the SEAT UK sales table with 10,714 registrations in 2011.

The luxurious Exeo saloon and ST line-up continues to win fans in increasing numbers, too – 2,735 canny buyers opted for an Exeo saloon or ST in 2011, an increase of almost 12% on its 2010 registrations.

But the stand-out performance of the year must surely be SEAT’s multi award-winning new Alhambra, which almost trebled sales in 2011. Named MPV of the Year by a plethora of influential UK motoring titles includingWhat Car? and Auto Express over the course of the last 12 months, the impressive seven-seat people carrier also boasts a very healthy bank of orders as 2012 begins.

Strong performances from both its fleet and retail sales operations have contributed to SEAT’s 2011 success – the strongest sales total in the brand’s 26-year history in the UK.

Fleet sales, in particular, ended the year 21% up on their 2010 total – with SEAT’s increasingly well-regarded fleet and business sales team making significant headway in this ultra-competitive sector.

Managing Director of SEAT UK, Peter Wyhinny, is understandably proud both of the 2011 total, and SEAT’s continuing growth in this country. He said: ‘The entire SEAT UK team, and our growing network of excellent dealers nationwide, can rightly take great pride in this fabulous achievement.

‘SEAT has an ambitious plan for growth in this country and our performance in 2011 clearly demonstrates that it is firmly on track.

‘I’m thrilled to see so many more new car buyers not only considering SEAT, but actually taking the decision to buy one of our sporty, dynamic and exciting new cars.

‘Now, with the largest product offensive in our history due in 2012 including the debut of the exciting Mii city car, I’m more confident than ever that we can look forward to a prosperous and successful future in the UK.’

SEAT is working on its first electric car designed, developed and manufactured in Spain. The firm is unveiling the prototype Altea XL Electric Ecomotive, a totally electrically-driven zero-emissions car, as well as the prototype Leon TwinDrive Ecomotive, a plug-in hybrid.

Over the next few months the Spanish car maker will make available units of both models to government institutions in Catalonia and Madrid for use in their vehicle fleets. This will provide SEAT with valuable information on use of the cars for assessment with a view to mass production of electric vehicles in the medium-term.

SEAT envisages the launch of its first electric plug-in hybrid car in 2015, to be followed a year later by an all-electric vehicle.

SEAT’s strategy is to commit to a wide range of alternative technologies. To this end the Spanish manufacturer is unveiling two different but complementary models at the same time.

SEAT President James Muir said: ‘Customers demand a more sustainable form of mobility, but their needs are diverse. Therefore, we believe that a parallel strategy of developing two different technologies will put SEAT in the best position to meet their needs.’

The announcement of the launch of the first electric vehicles coincides with the start of the biggest new product offensive SEAT has known. The company will launch four new models over the next 12 months, the first being SEAT’s smart new urban vehicle – the Mii.

The successful SEAT Young Driver programme is broadening its appeal still further with the news that it is soon to be made available to disabled youngsters.

By the end of October young wheelchair users aged 11 years and up will be able to take driving lessons with Young Driver.

The lessons, run as usual by fully qualified ADI driving instructors, will take place in new SEAT Ibizas equipped with DSG gearboxes and fitted with hand controls and dual controls.

Lessons will start at Brent Cross, Birmingham and Sheffield on Thursday 27 October, and will then roll out progressively to all eleven SEAT Young Driver venues nationwide.

The move to expand SEAT Young Driver to an even broader audience of potential motorists has been welcomed by Sophie Morgan. The TV presenter and former reality TV contestant on BBC3’s Britain’s Missing Top Model is backing the expansion.

Sophie, 26, was paralysed in a car accident at the age of 18. She said: ‘Having had a road accident shortly after passing my driving test, which left me paralysed for life, I wholeheartedly encourage any initiative aiming to help young drivers be better prepared for the road and, accordingly, lower the chance of accidents.

‘I also support and actively encourage the enabling of other young disabled people to drive. The independence and empowerment of having a driving licence cannot be underestimated and it is fantastic that SEAT and Admiral are providing young disabled people with such a valuable experience.’

SEAT Young Driver, sponsored by insurance giant Admiral, has already delivered more than 25,000 lessons to young people, including those with disabilities such as autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, profound deafness and visual impairment.

The addition of the hand control cars is the achievement of a longstanding ambition of the programme to be as inclusive as possible.

Kim Stanton of SEAT Young Driver said: ‘There is overwhelming evidence that early driving experience cuts accidents among young drivers by 40%, and it is great fun for youngsters. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors – SEAT and Admiral – we are not only the first young driver programme with a network of nationwide venues but, now, the first to accommodate wheelchair users.’

Young wheelchair users will be able to enjoy exactly the same activities as able-bodied youngsters – learning to steer, accelerate, brake, manoeuvre, reverse and park on Young Driver’s dedicated driver training areas each of which includes roundabouts, junctions, driving and parking zones.

SEAT Young Driver, Driving for the Disabled launches at Brent Cross Shopping Centre on Thursday 27 October. To book a lesson, or for more details, visit www.youngdriver.eu

SEAT is unveiling the Mii city car – the perfect vehicle for today’s urban lifestyle. Quite simply, the Mii makes life easier – with compelling practicality, exceptional driving fun, high efficiency and innovative technology.

The Mii combines SEAT’s sporty Mediterranean design with the very best craftsmanship and enormous scope for personalisation. Moreover, the outstanding value-for-money and low maintenance costs make the joy of driving a Mii easily attainable.

Spain, SEAT’s home market, will begin sales of the Mii before the end of the year, with the rest of Europe following in Spring 2012.

At a length of 3.55 metres, the Mii is the perfect size for modern-day urban use. The Mii comes to market at the end of 2011 as a three-door; the five-door version follows in 2012.

The new SEAT will be offered with all-new 1.0-litre petrol engines of 60 PS and 75 PS outputs. Combined with the vehicle’s low weight of 854 kg these guarantee nimble agility and exemplary efficiency. The Mii Ecomotive has a CO2 figure of just 97 g/km*.

The Mii is also a leader when it comes to innovative technology. The City Safety Assist for instance, adds an extra dimension of safety in the city, while the SEAT Portable System brings together entertainment, navigation, phone and vehicle functions in an entirely new way.

‘The new Mii is the perfect partner for everyday urban life. It is young and fresh, thought through to the very last detail and built to the finest quality. The Mii brings clear SEAT identity to the sub-compact segment and is set to win a significant share of the market,’ said James Muir, President of SEAT S.A. ‘This is why the Mii is an important addition to the SEAT portfolio and a clear next step in our company strategy. With the Mii, we are starting the most comprehensive model offensive in SEAT history.’

Perfect for the city, and longer journeys

Even though the Mii fits neatly into almost every parking space, its optimum use of space means it still offers plenty of space for four people. With a volume of 251 litres, the Mii offers the largest luggage compartment in its class. With the rear seat back folded, this increases to as much as 951 litres.

Yet the Mii doesn’t stop at the city boundaries. Its spaciousness, excellent comfort levels and sporty dynamics – a direct result of its low weight – also make the Mii a compelling companion over longer distances.

‘At just 3.55 metres long, the Mii combines innovative technologies with an incredibly well-balanced overall feel,’ said Dr Matthias Rabe, SEAT Vice President for Research and Development.

‘With its low weight and modern drivetrains, the Mii is both sporty and efficient at the same time.’

Design – Mediterranean modernity with clear character

Characteristic and unmistakable – the Mii is clearly recognisable as a member of the SEAT family. Its front end carries forward the typical arrow visual, while its profile is distinguished by powerful wheel arches and slender roof pillars.

The rear end shows a new form of light design with triangular lamp units. The perfect proportions are a key element and comprise a width of 1.64 metres, a long wheelbase of 2.42 metres and exceptionally short overhangs front and rear. The steep rear end facilitates the Mii’s excellent spaciousness – optimal functionality is particularly important in the super-compact segment.

‘The Mii breathes the very spirit of its remarkable hometown, Barcelona,’ says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, the new Head of SEAT Design.

‘It is modern, it has a strong personality, but it isn’t loud. The Mii has the feel of a modern yet timeless product design. Every detail is precisely defined, but with not a line too many. With the Mii, we are making sporty chic and design quality attainable for all.’

Modern clarity and compelling functionality are defining aspects of the interior, too. The perfect ergonomics of the instruments and the control elements fit beautifully with the premium surfaces that can be individualised using coloured trim from the various equipment lines. Its seats are also new – with integrated head restraints they offer
sports car flair, while being very comfortable and well-suited to long-distance driving.

Safety – the Mii monitors the road and brakes for itself

A unique innovation in this class of vehicle is the SEAT Mii’s City Safety Assist. In the event of danger the Mii warns its driver, or even brakes automatically. A laser sensor recognises other vehicles in front, whether they are driving or stationary. The system warns the driver when there is the imminent threat of an accident at speeds of less than 18 mph (30 km/h). If he does not react, the Mii brakes automatically. In many situations this is sufficient to avoid an accident altogether but will, at the very least, mitigate its consequences. ESP is also available, and is always combined with City Safety Assist when specified.

Systematic lightweight design means that the base weight of the Mii is only 854 kg. Its bodyshell is a piece of high technology formed largely from high-strength and, in places, form-hardened steels. Thanks to exceptional stiffness, it delivers a high-quality feel and excellent passive safety. The side airbags are standard equipment and are particularly large for optimum protection of head and upper body.

Drive – sporty agility with low fuel consumption

Beneath the short bonnet of the Mii is a completely new generation of engines. The three-cylinder petrol powerplant with a one-litre displacement is very light, compact and smooth-running. With two outputs of 60 PS or 75 PS, it ensures agility and compelling dynamics both in the city and on the open road.

Top speeds stand at 99 mph (160 km/h) and 106 mph (171 km/h) respectively, while fuel consumption on the combined cycle is measured at 4.5* and 4.7* litres per 100 kilometres. With a generous 35-litre tank volume, it offers considerable range between fill-ups and long-lasting driving fun.

There are two Ecomotive versions of the Mii. Thanks to a start/stop system, brake energy recuperation and further consumption-lowering initiatives, they make do with just 4.2* litres of fuel per 100 km, which equates to a CO2 figure of just 97 g/km.

In Continental Europe the little SEAT will also be offered with CNG engineering. This lowers CO2 emissions to just 86 g/km, making the Mii one of the cleanest cars in the world.

Furthermore, as an alternative to a manual transmission, the Mii is also available with an automated manual box that boasts two electric motors to help manage the smooth gear change.

Infotainment – unique technology to boost efficient driving

SEAT is a young brand and the unique new SEAT Portable System is, of course, part of that. This innovative technology includes a five-inch screen – it is removable for mobile use and yet perfectly integrated into the vehicle electronics. Its many functions include a state-of-the-art navigation system, hands-free phone system with voice control and an on-board computer. The device can be combined with the integrated radio and speaker system.

‘The Mii offers enormous intelligence in a compact format,’ said Dr Matthias Rabe, SEAT Vice President for Research and Development. ‘The SEAT Portable System shows how it is possible to offer fascinating technology and innovative functions with tangible added value at an attractive price.’

The unique features of the SEAT Portable System include an ‘Eco-trainer’ function. Gearshift display, engine speed recommendations, average values and consumption profile all help the Mii owner to drive particularly economically. Plus, the SEAT Portable System is fully integrated into the vehicle electronics. It can be kept up-to-date via internet downloads, while tailor-made apps will offer additional functions in the future.

Equipment – sporty chic

Offered in its home market with three equipment lines, two Style Packs and a wide array of optional equipment and accessories, the Mii can be adapted perfectly to suit individual lifestyles and preferences.

Even the base model has all the key elements for safety and urban driving fun such as ABS, an adjustable steering column, side airbags and Isofix points with Top Tether. Reference and Style are the names of the two other equipment lines in Spain, with Style offering features such as power windows and central locking.

Prefer more chic or more sporting character in your Mii? The two equipment packages Chic and Sport offer the choice, with special colour and trim elements for interior personalisation. Alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel are always part of the package – the chrome package in the Chic version adds a special touch, while the Sport version offers tinted windows and a sporty suspension set-up for an even more dynamic feel.

At Frankfurt the Spanish brand’s unique design language is extended to a sports saloon concept with a dynamic, confident look. The SEAT IBL combines a clean, minimalist exterior with an innovative, premium interior that clearly conveys its quality and precision.

James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A. said: ‘The IBL shows that sports saloons within the SEAT brand portfolio will play an important role in future. However, this concept car does not pre-empt a specific model, but rather shows the design philosophy we are applying to bring the unmistakable SEAT identity to a saloon car, too.’

He added: ‘The IBL is the perfect representation of SEAT brand values – with its distinctive look, its precision and its premium feel. Over the next few years, SEAT will embark upon a product offensive that will see the spirit of the IBL reflected in several series-production models.’

The IBL completes SEAT’s exciting series of concept cars that define the genetic design pool for the ongoing development of the sporty Spanish brand’s cars. Laying the groundwork was the highly acclaimed IBE compact electric sports coupé. The IBX that followed showcased the new DNA code of SEAT design in a completely different vehicle architecture – a crossover between SUV and sports coupé.

Dr Matthias Rabe, Vice-President of Research and Development at SEAT, said: ‘In SEAT’s Technical Centre (CTS) we have combined the latest technology that the Volkswagen Group offers with our design language to achieve products as exciting as the IBL.’

SEAT’s much-admired executive class Exeo saloon and ST estate range is getting a new look, and some important new engineering upgrades.

The revised Exeo ‘face’ with new bi-xenon headlights and stunning LED daytime running lights (standard on Sport, optional on SE), will make its public debut in the metal at the forthcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

The styling enhancements, boosted by smart new alloy wheel designs, further underline the high value Exeo range’s premium look, while upgrades to interior materials – including upgraded leather on the steering wheel and revised upholstery – create a matching premium feel.

Meanwhile, improvements to the high quality SEAT saloon and estate’s 2.0 TDI common rail powerplant now see emissions cut to as little as 129 g/km*. Economy is similarly improved, too, with the Exeo saloon now being capable of as much as 57.6 mpg* on the EU’s combined cycle.

The latest upgrades to the Exeo come hard on the heels of the arrival of a new gearbox option earlier this year, with the addition of a smooth, efficient Multitronic auto/sequential manual gearbox further underlining the luxurious SEAT’s executive appeal.

The Multitronic ‘box – with its CVT-based technology and stepped ‘changes’ – offers both full auto mode and the option of sequential shifts via the sporty, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Looking to 2012, the Exeo family is in for further upgrades with the addition for the first time of SEAT’s effortless Start/Stop technology on an Ecomotive model, which will help deliver even more fuel efficiency.

SEAT is targeting an ambitious CO2 figure of less than 120 g/km for the Start/Stop-equipped Exeo which will, of course, enhance its appeal to both environmentally-conscious private buyers and UK fleet managers who demand such low emissions levels from even their executive models.

The Exeo’s eye-catching styling changes, allied to SEAT’s ongoing commitment to improving quality while simultaneously cutting its cars’ emissions and improving fuel economy, are sure to generate further interest in the range – which is now the Spanish brand’s third best-seller in the UK behind the Ibiza supermini and sporty Leon five-door family hatch.

Acknowledging that the Exeo upgrades will boost both the emotional and rational appeal of the range, SEAT UK managing director Peter Wyhinny said: ‘The arrival of the Exeo marked SEAT’s debut in a new and hard-fought market segment, and the success of the fleet-friendly saloon and estate range is already clear.

Now, with this great new look and impressive engineering changes I’m sure the Exeo will draw the crowds to both our Frankfurt show stand and, in due course, our UK dealerships.’

The Exeo range, which is today offered with a choice of three frugal turbodiesels or one potent turbocharged petrol engine, is priced from £19,285.

Full details on the entire SEAT range, together with a sophisticated car configurator, are available at www.seat.co.uk

SEAT’s all-conquering new Alhambra MPV is continuing its remarkable run of major award wins with news that it has been named Best MPV by Britain’s biggest-selling weekly motoring magazine – Auto Express.

The Spanish seven-seater already has a host of major titles to its name, but that doesn’t lessen the delight at winning the Auto Express crown.

Speaking at the magazine’s New CarAwards this week, Auto Express Acting Editor, Graham Hope, said of the MPV: ‘These machines are the multi-tools of the automotive world and the SEAT is both incredibly practical and easy to live with.

‘A smart exterior and classy interior help to seal the deal, while attractive prices and low running costs take care of your wallet.’

The flexible full-size seven seater from Iberia took the coveted honour as the judges highlighted its appealing mix of style, quality and affordability.

The largest member of the growing SEAT range went on sale here in November last year and is now proving as popular with savvy MPV buyers as it is with the motoring world’s award judges.

Since its UK launch the Alhambra has been awarded ‘Best MPV’ by UK magazines and websites Diesel Car, Fleet World, Carbuyer.co.uk and What Car?

Internationally, it has been named ‘Best MPV’ by El Economista newspaper in Spain, ‘Best Imported MPV’ by Germany’s Auto Zeitung magazine and ‘2011 Best Imported MPV’ by German motor trade magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The Alhambra has also been named ‘MPV of the Year’ in Portugal by the ‘Car of the Year – Crystal Steering Wheel Trophy’ panel members.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, considering this lengthy list of major honours sales are significantly ahead of early expectations in the UK, with a massive order bank underlining the new Alhambra’s popularity with everyone from family drivers to specialist business and chauffeur companies, and private hire firms.

Available in S, SE or top spec’ SE Lux trim and priced from just £23,525 RRP, the award-winning Alhambra is offered with a choice of modern turbocharged petrol or diesel powerplants. The majority of engines can be paired with either a crisp six-speed manual or smooth six-speed DSG auto that offers the extra flexibility of sequential manual operation via the standard steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

As befits a class leader, all Alhambras boast a high level of standard equipment. Among the highlights available across the range are sliding rear doors (optionally available with electric operation); integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone connection; three-zone climate control and parking sensors.

SEAT UK Head of Marketing, Steve Robertson, said of the Alhambra’s latest honour from the UK motoring press: ‘The good news really does keep on coming for our class-leading MPV.

‘I can’t recall a time when a SEAT model has scooped so many top awards in the space of less than a year, which I hope tells would-be buyers all they need to know about the quality, value and genuine class of our new seven-seat Alhambra.’

Spanish car maker SEAT is ratcheting up the heat on the competition as it unveils a fresh suite of scorching summer deals on its range of sporty models.

Style, value for money and an engaging drive are the keys to SEAT’s increasing success both here in the UK and across Continental Europe, where the brand is capturing market share at a prodigious rate.

Having notched up yet another record first quarter in January-March 2011, and with encouraging figures suggesting April, May and June may be similarly successful, SEAT’s sizzling summer offers present a tempting proposition for the nation’s bargain-hungry new car buyers.

A new, ultra-high value version of SEAT’s enduring favourite, the Ibiza, leads the charge. Extending the now-familiar Copa trim level the debut of the Ibiza S Copa in all three bodystyles – SC, 5dr and ST – puts the sporty Spaniard in pole position for summer sales.

In addition to the entry-level Ibiza S model’s already generous trim, the S Copa now adds 15-inch ‘Ingenia’ alloy wheels, cruise control, front fog lights with cornering function, electrically-adjustable door mirrors and body-coloured door handles and mirrors.

The Ibiza S Copa is offered with either SEAT’s smooth 1.2-litre 12V 70 PS petrol engine – in SC or 5dr form – or, in all three Ibiza bodystyles, the Spaniards’ hyper-frugal, three-cylinder, 1.2-litre TDI turbodiesel. Good for 75 PS, this unit generates just 92 g/km of CO2 on the official cycle and, regardless of bodystyle, offers a combined economy figure of more than 80 mpg.

All this and a price tag for the Ibiza SC S Copa of just £9,995 RRP or, subject to terms and conditions, a 42-month Personal Contract Hire (PCH) deal of £199 per month with a deposit of just £199.

Moving up the range the Ibiza SE Copa, meanwhile, adds such luxuries as 16-inch alloy wheels, electric folding door mirrors, a leather-clad steering wheel and gearknob, dark tinted rear windows, rain and light sensors for automatic wipers and lights, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and climate control in place of the standard car’s manual air conditioning system.

The SE Copa supermini’s engine options are a more potent petrol in the shape of SEAT’s 1.4-litre 85 PS four cylinder, or the same 1.2-litre TDI that appears in the S Copa.

Prices start at just £10,495 RRP for the Ibiza SC 1.4 SE Copa. That’s a premium of just £500 over the S Copa yet it adds extra spec’ worth an amazing £1,120! Meanwhile the PCH terms remain the same as the S Copa – £199 down and £199 per month, again subject to terms and conditions.

Moving up the size range SEAT’s svelte Leon family five-door continues to offer exceptional value, with S Copa and SE Copa versions cramming in copious amounts of kit without a corresponding price hike.

In fact the Leon 1.2 TSI S Copa is currently available for just £13,995 RRP, a saving of £2,185 over the manufacturer recommended retail price of £16,180 on the road.

Meanwhile, the Leon 1.2 TSI SE Copa features an extensive array of standard-fit equipment such as the SEAT Media System that comprises state-of-the-art touch screen satellite navigation technology and 3D mapping, dynamic route guidance, SD card slot for MP3 playback, DAB radio tuner and Bluetooth audio streaming connectivity.

All this, and a price tag of just £14,695 RRP which equates to a saving of £2,245 over the manufacturer recommended retail price of £16,940 on the road.

Elsewhere, there are enticing money-off deals on SEAT’s capacious and practical Altea and Altea XL family, as well as discounts of up to £2,000 on versions of the luxurious Exeo saloon and versatile Exeo ST estate.

Explaining the latest range of great SEAT deals, UK Head of Marketing Steve Robertson said: ‘SEAT has a well-known and well-deserved reputation for building dynamic, engaging and downright sexy cars such as the latest Ibiza.

‘The arrival of the Copa trim level earlier this year, and the great offers we’re unveiling this summer, further emphasise that we can justly add ‘fabulous value’ to the long list of reasons for buying a new SEAT.’

SEAT is continuing the ambitious development of its new design DNA with the unveiling at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show of the new SEAT IBX concept car.

This stunning urban sports utility vehicle concept combines the powerful character and sporty design language of the Spanish brand with a self-confident look and distinctive proportions.

The SEAT IBX also boasts exceptional utility and outstanding versatility, as well as sustainable mobility through resource conservation. Its drive would come from an advanced hybrid powertrain that combines local zero-emissions electromobility in the city with the extensive cross-country range of an internal combustion engine.

In laying the groundwork for SEAT’s innovative new design language, the compact IBE electric sports coupé from last year met with enormous positive feedback. The IBX now demonstrates the evolutionary development of this new genetic code from SEAT Design in a completely different vehicle architecture – an exciting crossover between SUV and sports coupé.

The sporty alternative in the SUV segment

Measuring 4.26 metres long, the SEAT IBX expands Europe’s extremely successful compact SUV segment with a dynamic and unique design alternative. And with its combination of compact dimensions and wide-ranging versatility, the IBX is the perfect fit for an active lifestyle in urban areas.

James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A. said: ‘With the IBX, we are once again demonstrating just how intensively we are working on the renewal of the SEAT brand, and how determined we are to develop for the future.

‘The IBX represents the values of the SEAT brand perfectly – with its unique design, its youthful energy and its outstanding sustainability as a result of its hybrid drive concept. Even though a decision has yet to be taken, we could certainly envisage the IBX as a future expansion of our product portfolio.’

Design – pure precision and sporting finesse

Following the IBE from 2010, the IBX offers a further, extremely promising insight into the ongoing development of the SEAT Design world. The pure forms, the precise lines and the exact surfaces of the IBX convey the same distinctive design language that, in its modernity, sustains and strengthens the SEAT identity.

As the first evolution of this new design line, the IBX demonstrates just how well this design language works in combination with a completely different vehicle architecture and significantly larger dimensions. In its proportions, the IBX is a sports utility vehicle, but in its appearance it is clearly a sports coupé – it is hard to imagine a more accurate expression of the word ‘crossover’.

‘The IBX was created from the gene pool of our next vehicle generation. This design DNA will have a profound impact on every one of our models,’ said SEAT Chief Designer Luc Donckerwolke.

‘With this urban sports utility vehicle we are proving that with our design, our sporty pedigree and our youthful character, we can also create a vehicle concept that is unique among SUVs.’

Compact format with powerful proportions

At a length of 4.26 metres, the SEAT IBX is relatively compact. However, its width of 1.80 metres and height of 1.62 metres ensure powerful proportions. And even though the IBX possesses the full versatility and utility of an SUV, with its two doors, stretched roofline and distinctive rear roof pillar it forms the perfect crossover between sports utility vehicle and classic sports coupé.

The front of the SEAT IBX is defined by full LED technology headlamps that are as sophisticated as they are distinctive. They display the characteristic V that is a hallmark of the SEAT arrow design. The entire front end bears this arrow shape, with radiator grille and bonnet also picking up the V-form.

The surfaces above the wheel arches are clearly accentuated in their lines like carefully toned, sinuous muscle. Equally distinctive are the air intakes low down on the front end and featuring integrated fog lamps – their wide positioning reinforces the impression of width and power.

Meanwhile the side view of the IBX emphasises its powerful stature – a clearly defined shoulder, the powerful, three-dimensional flanks and the sharply differentiated surfaces underscore the dynamic look, as do the large wheels featuring an aerodynamic five twin-spoke design. Typical of SEAT are the two distinctive scores that run from the front wheel arch into the door and over the rear wheel arch.

The length of the stretched roofline is further emphasised by the rear spoiler and the narrow horizontal of the glass surfaces along the sides, with the distinctive, trapezoidal roof pillar creating an impression of exceptional solidity. The sharply cut exterior mirror is mounted on the door, as on a sports car. Sharp precision is also evident in the slender, recessed door openers.

The rear end adopts the characteristic form of the front and reinterprets it. The rear lights in LED light-guide technology and the rear windscreen with its additional angle in the centre also bear the arrow motif, while the suggestion of a diffuser beneath the bumper surface derives its form from the front air intakes.

Importantly the entire vehicle bears no extraneous ornamentation. Every single line has the function of structuring the volume and surfaces of the car, each of the muscles emerging from the form emphasising the sporty design. The reduction of form consistently applied and the precision in every detail are fixed features of the SEAT Design philosophy.

Concept – flexible mobility with responsibility

The modern, young lifestyle has many facets; offering endless options for job and leisure time, for friends and family. However, as a partner in mobility, the car must be just as multi-faceted. In response, the IBX has the perfect format – it boasts plenty of interior space and the variability to meet all requirements, yet it remains agile and compact enough to fit the bill on the streets and parking spaces of an urban area. And this is where a vehicle height of 1.62 metres with its suitably lofty seating position is invaluable. Particularly in dense urban traffic it delivers enormous benefits in terms of visibility, leading to greater safety.

The powertrain concept is perfect for the mobility requirements of an urban area, while meeting personal expectations of freedom. The vehicle, with its electric range of 45 kilometres, can cover many everyday journeys – with zero local emissions and sustainable responsibility. And yet its range is not limited. Personal freedom is always guaranteed and unlimited mobility supplied courtesy of the internal combustion engine.

Possible combustion engine candidates are the state-of-the-art direct injection TDI and TSI engines from the modern SEAT line-up. And, of course, the IBX is equipped with all the efficiency technologies from the Ecomotive programme. In its base configuration, the IBX is set up for front wheel drive. However, a modern 4WD system might be an option for further enhanced mobility.

The SEAT Alhambra – an acknowledged leader among today’s full size people carriers and already crownedWhar Car? MPV of the Year in the UK – is now even more versatile thanks to the addition of four-wheel drive.

Making its public debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the new Alhambra 4WD is even more versatile, flexible and capable thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive.

Offered with a 140 PS 2.0 TDI powerplant and six-speed manual transmission, the extension to the already comprehensive Alhambra line-up adds a whole new range of travel possibilities for families, leisure and business drivers.

From the outset, SEAT’s new MPV has claimed a top spot in its segment thanks to its practical bodyshell concept, maximum flexibility, innovative use of technology and outstanding efficiency. These features are backed up by exceptionally high quality build quality, great value pricing and a premium feel that comfortably exceeds expectations in the MPV sector.

Greater dynamics and traction

This summer will see the new Alhambra 4WD join the SEAT line-up in showrooms – and with its permanent all-wheel drive, this version offers a major benefit in traction on every road surface and in every situation.

Driving safety and mobility in the face of wintry road conditions are boosted every bit as much as its performance as a towing vehicle. At the same time, the next-generation, electronically controlled all-wheel drive is set up for optimum driving dynamics. Thanks to the sophisticated design of its carefully tuned chassis, the SEAT Alhambra stays true to the spirit of the brand by delivering a surprising level of sporty driving fun – something not usually associated with MPVs. Yet the Alhambra’s dynamism doesn’t come at the expense of long-distance comfort.

The all-wheel drive system smoothly and quickly adapts the distribution of torque in line with the driving situation. Key to the system is an electronically controlled and hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch. To further improve the already excellent axle load distribution, the multi-plate clutch is mounted at the end of the drive shaft in front of the rear axle differential – which is also a re-engineered, extremely compact and highly robust component.

Next-generation hi-tech design

Running in an oil bath inside the central clutch is a disc set that can be pressed together in a continuously variable fashion using regulated hydraulic pressure. A control unit constantly analyses the driving conditions and, in the event that the front wheels slip, an electrically driven annular piston pump immediately builds up the oil pressure necessary for the clutch to divert a proportion of the driving force to the rear wheels. Thanks to a high-performance pressure accumulator, this process takes just a matter of milliseconds.

Powerful performance and excellent economy

The SEAT Alhambra 4WD is equipped with a 2.0 TDI 140 PS diesel engine and manual six-speed transmission. These combine to deliver a potent mix of powerful performance and excellent efficiency.

The car is capable of 119 mph (191 km/h) and can sprint from rest to 62 mph in only 11.4 seconds. Meanwhile, the frugal TDI offers 47.1 mpg on the combined cycle (6.0 litres per 100 km) equating to a CO2figure of just 158 g/km*. Naturally the Ecomotive package, with brake energy recovery and automatic start/stop, has a major role to play in these figures. The MPV is also equipped with an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction) – placing it among the world’s cleanest diesels.

Deliverable as either a five- or six-seater

In its home market the SEAT Alhambra 4WD will be offered as a five-seater in Reference and Style versions. The comprehensive standard equipment and many hi-tech options are identical to those offered on models with front-wheel drive.

Towards the end of the year, the Alhambra 4WD will also be available with six generous individual seats. This 2+2+2 seating arrangement further enhances the premium character of the Alhambra.

The Ibiza, in all three bodystyles – SC, 5dr and ST – is now available with an exciting new 105 PS 1.2 TSI unit, mated either to a five-speed manual gearbox or state-of-the-art seven-speed DSG with double clutch. The turbocharged petrol engine replaces SEAT’s 1.6-litre 105 PS.

Meanwhile the Leon and Altea families now feature a 140 PS 2.0 TDI with common rail fuelling in place of the previous unit’s pump injector system. This, too, is offered with a manual gearbox or DSG.

The new Ibiza 1.2 TSI combines trademark SEAT sporting intent with outstanding efficiency. Despite being considerably smaller in terms of cubic capacity than the 1.6 it replaces, this new TSI generates an identical 105 PS.

Performance and acceleration figures both improve versus the 1.6 – in the case of 0-62 mph acceleration the time drops by more than half a second to 9.8 seconds while the top speed is marginally better, too.

And proving that you can have your cake and eat it, the new turbocharged 1.2 also makes the Ibiza both more economical and more environmentally responsible. Versus the 1.6 combined economy is improved by a massive 25%, from 44.8 mpg to 55.4 mpg (SC and 5dr) while CO2 emissions are slashed by 20% from 149 g/km to just 119 g/km.

The engine is available to SE and Sport buyers across all three bodystyles, and all versions are of course fully compliant with the latest EUV emission control legislation. Manual versions are also badged Ecomotive as they feature SEAT’s new Stop/Start and Brake Energy Recovery technologies. Prices start at £12,780 RRP for the Ibiza SC 1.2 TSI SE.

The other important engine introduction – which sees SEAT’s family-sized Leon, Altea and Altea XL gain the option of a new 140 PS 2.0 TDI CR unit – also brings lower fuel consumption and emissions, along with significantly improved refinement.

Like the TSI the 2.0 TDI CR is offered with a manual or DSG ‘box but, regardless of transmission, offers nimble acceleration and a smooth, efficient drive. In the Leon, the new common rail turbodiesel sees CO2 drop from 147 g/km to just 125 g/km, while combined economy climbs from 50.4 mpg to 58.9 mpg, a welcome 15% improvement.

Similarly impressive improvements result from the new common rail engine’s introduction in the Altea and Altea XL, too. CO2 in both bodystyles drops to just 129 g/km, while combined fuel economy climbs to 57.6 mpg.

Perhaps predictably for these SEATs, though, the economy improvements do not come at the expense of driving enjoyment or pure performance.

The Altea 2.0 TDI CR, for instance, races from rest to 62 mph in a spirited 9.7 seconds meaning that the new version is, in fact, quicker off the mark than the previous pump injector version. Prices for the Leon 2.0 TDI CR in SE spec start at £18,570, while a similarly engined Altea SE is available from £18,770.

SEAT UK’s Ibiza, Leon and Altea Product Manager, Andy McGregor, said: ‘Our continuing programme to update and enhance our suite of engines now sees the arrival of these two great units.

‘The extra refinement, economy and performance from the common rail turbodiesel are clearly impressive, while the arrival of the excellent new 1.2 TSI in the Ibiza shows that, when it comes to today’s engines, smaller really can be better!’

The new SEAT Alhambra is making an elegant entrance into UK showrooms this week as the Spanish brand’s highly-anticipated successor to its original seven-seat MPV makes its public debut here.

Fresh from the wheels up, and proving beyond doubt that practical full-size MPVs do not have to be lacklustre to look at, the new Alhambra once again places SEAT at the head of the people carrier class.

The largest car SEAT has yet made at more than 4.8 metres stem to stern, the Alhambra also becomes the Spaniards’ most luxurious and technologically advanced offering with a raft of clever and important new features that showcase the firm’s formidable technical expertise.

Styled by SEAT design boss Luc Donckerwolke and his team in Martorell, today’s Alhambra shows how sporty, dynamic and engaging it’s possible to make a modern seven-seater with, in particular, SEAT’s trademark ‘Arrow Design’ nose adding a sense of purposeful style to proceedings.

That svelte shape also contributes in no small part to the SEAT’s exceptional Cd figure of just 0.299, making it one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in its class.

Further back, the car’s capacious new shell sports arguably the most obvious distinction between this and previous vehicle to wear the ‘Alhambra’ badge – two sliding rear doors which significantly improve practicality.

Inside, seven individual seats can accommodate seven adults in genuine comfort with even third row occupants benefiting from generous knee and headroom. Today’s Alhambra does away with the old-style individually removable seating concept in favour of a clever new fold-flat system that sees all five second- and third-row seats pivot into the car’s floor at the simple tug of a lever.

Access to those third row seats, in particular, is now a cinch thanks to the debut of the easy entry slide and tilt second row seats.

You want space? Alhambra’s got space. Up to a massive 2,297 litres of it, to be precise. While even in five-seat form (with just the third row folded) there’s as much as 1,167 litres of load bay on offer. Needless to say, storage around the cabin is typically generous, too, as a profusion of cupholders, tray tables, cubbies and pockets easily swallows the detritus that goes along with family outings.

Beneath the graceful bonnet of the front-wheel drive Alhambra lie a variety of modern engine and transmission options. The counterpoint to one of two top notch EU V-compliant 2.0-litre common rail turbodiesels, of 140 PS or 170 PS denomination, is an especially capable 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged direct injection 150 PS petrol powerplant.

Depending on trim level, all three are offered with either a precise six-speed manual or sporty yet flexible six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox). The result is a seven-seater capable of covering the 0-62 mph sprint in just 9.5 seconds (2.0 TDI CR 170 PS manual) and topping out at 130 mph (2.0 TDI CR 170 PS manual).

At launch, all Alhambras boast some of SEAT’s most important eco-minded Ecomotive technologies including Stop/Start and Brake Energy Recovery. Thus, all Alhambras are badged Ecomotive while the 2.0 TDI CR 140 PS manual grabs the honour of being badged E Ecomotive thanks to its range-best CO2 emissions of just 146 g/km.

Economy, as you might expect of such a slippery and carefully engineered vehicle, is laudable, too, with as much as 50.4 mpg available on the combined cycle (2.0 TDI CR 140 PS manual).

Bristling with equipment, the new MPV is offered in SEAT’s simple trim designations: S, SE and SE Lux. But even the entry-level S versions are hardly what you’d call humbly specified. Standard across all Alhambras are such goodies as 3-zone climate control, parking sensors front and rear, sliding rear doors, electronic handbrake, Bluetooth hands-free phone connection, 16” alloys, Stop/Start and Brake Energy Recovery.

Equipment gets even more lavish as you ascend the range, with SE Lux versions boasting a dazzling array of standard-fit kit. Brief highlights include power-operated sliding rear doors and tailgate, panoramic glass sunroof with opening front pane and electrically operated sun blind, black leather upholstery, 12-way electrically adjustable font seats, SEAT Media System including satnav with dynamic route guidance and rear view camera.

Technical innovations in the Alhambra are many and varied. Aside from the impressively convenient seats there are, depending on spec, such highlights as High Beam Assist which automatically switches between full and dipped beam taking into account both street lighting and oncoming traffic.

Meanwhile, the forthcoming option of Park Assist (available on vehicles ordered from December 2010 onward) makes mincemeat of sliding the SEAT into (and out of) parking spots by both identifying suitable spaces and then automatically attending to the steering while the driver simply controls the accelerator, clutch and brake.

Available in showrooms nationwide from this week the new SEAT Alhambra is, then, both a practical and luxurious MPV and, with prices starting from £22,330 RRP, it maintains SEAT’s reputation for exceptional value.

Welcoming the UK arrival of the brand’s most technically advanced model to date, SEAT UK Product Manager James Buckell said: ‘I’m extremely proud of the new Alhambra as I believe it shows that family-sized seven seaters can be both good to look at and great to drive.

‘The technology that has gone into this new car, from the great range of engines to luxury features such as Park Assist, underline, too, how keen we are to put every ounce of value that we can into our new MPV.’

The first version of the SEAT IBE was presented in Geneva earlier this year and, since then, its design, technology and interior have been further developed.

Making its debut in Paris is an interior which is incredibly spacious and versatile for a vehicle of this format, as well as an innovative concept for individualised connectivity and infotainment.

Clearly, driving fun and dynamics are at the heart of the SEAT IBE. The little sports car is low and wide, with powerful proportions and a concentrated gaze delivered by the razor-sharp lines of its LED headlamps.

With its short body length of only 3.83 metres it is the ideal fit for the urban mobility of the young and young at heart. And the SEAT IBE perfectly combines its sports car character with innovative technology. The all-electric drive facilitates local zero-emissions driving fun, while the powerful motor with 75 kW (102 PS) and the low weight delivered by intelligent mixed-material construction guarantee refined performance.

Alongside the impressive technical concept, the design of the SEAT IBE also points to an exciting future. Its athletic styling and clear, precise lines indicate an evolutionary step in SEAT design DNA. Style elements with unmistakable character – reduced to the minimum but perfectly executed – demonstrate the strategic quality of SEAT design in the development of future model generations.

‘SEAT is working very hard on future electro-mobility,’ said James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A.

‘Following the great success of our highly efficient Ecomotive models, hybrids and electric vehicles are further steps in our clear corporate strategy. And the IBE leaves no room for doubt – the future will find SEAT offering the most innovative, bold and youthful cars in their respective segments, without sacrificing anything in terms of usability.’

The SEAT IBE takes a unique approach to combining dynamic design and compact sporting character with exceptional usability. It is conceived for the urban conurbations of Europe such as Paris, London, Berlin or Barcelona. Here is where the IBE will come into its own with zero-emissions driving fun, fabulous manoeuvrability, an impressive amount of space – and, of course, a cool look courtesy of its clear and extroverted design language.

‘Zero-emissions mobility in urban areas is becoming increasingly important,’ said Frank Bekemeier, Executive Vice-President for SEAT responsible for Research and Development.

‘SEAT is developing innovative concepts for these new challenges. The IBE is a very special combination of compactness, usability and style, which makes it unique.’

Demonstrating beyond doubt that environmentally responsible does not have to equal dull looks or lacklustre performance, the SEAT IBE is a super-compact 2+2 sports coupe with classic sports car proportions. At just 3.83 metres in length it undercuts the successful SEAT Ibiza by around 20 centimetres. Yet, at an unusually wide 1.77 metres and only 123 centimetres high, the IBE possesses the classic proportions of a sports car.

The SEAT IBE is an all-electric vehicle that generates zero local emissions and has a package layout optimized for this new technology. The drive motor is located together with the power electronics at the front of the car. Their compact dimensions facilitate the extremely flat and dynamic contour of the bonnet. The lithium-ion battery is positioned in the rear.

Thanks to an incredibly compact independent rear suspension layout, the energy storage unit fits beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. With a maximum output of 75 kW (102 PS) and 200 Nm of torque, the power unit delivers exactly the kind of dynamic driving fun promised by the exterior styling.

The city dash from 0 to 50 km/h (31 mph) takes only 3.6 seconds; within 6.6 seconds, the IBE has reached 80 km/h (50 mph), and after only 9.7 seconds it arrives at 100 km/h (62 mph). This impressive performance is a function not only of the powerful off-the-line characteristics of the electric motor, but also the low weight of the car which tips the scales at only 1,100 kilograms. Intelligent lightweight engineering is the key, as well as the proven technological efficiency of aluminium and steel in its construction.

The continuous power rating is limited to 50 kW (68 PS), with the top speed pegged at 160 km/h (100 mph) – which is more than enough to cut an impressive figure even on urban motorways. Battery capacity is 18 kWh and set up for a range of around 130 kilometres (81 miles), which is ample for the daily mobility requirements of city life.

SEAT is also using the IBE to showcase its answer to the demands of the mobile generation for connectivity and infotainment. In the Paris show car the driver can use a wireless application to connect his smart phone, such as an iPhone, to the car and conduct an on-line check of its systems, including the battery and a trip computer display.

An album or a song can be selected from the smart phone and played through the car’s sound system by pressing the ‘drag to car’ option. The dash screen and the steering wheel touch controls simplify operating and navigating the integrated infotainment menus.

Furthermore, all manner of assistance and navigation functions can be used via special apps, and multimedia content stored in the device can be downloaded and accessed.

‘The IBE shows SEAT’s vision for a car of the future that is as emotional as it is ecologically responsible and affordable,’ said SEAT Head of Design Luc Donckerwolke.

‘The IBE is a concentrated version of our design DNA. Both exterior and interior are characterised by their focus on key elements, by a clear and precise architecture, by modern technology and by materials that are as high-quality as they are ecological.’

The exterior design of the car also delivers an exciting glimpse into the ongoing development of the SEAT design language. ‘The IBE is a gene pool for our next generation of vehicles,’ said Mr Donckerwolke.

‘Many of its elements describe our design language going forward. And it demonstrates how well driving pleasure and ecology come together at SEAT. Driving will be lots of fun in the electric age, too – at least it will in a SEAT.’

SEAT is continuing its ambitious product offensive with the motor show debut in Paris this week of an exceptionally versatile model: the new Alhambra.

New from the wheels up, SEAT’s roomy MPV offers plenty of space for leisure, business and hobbies fulfilling the expectations of family life, as well as the demands of high-mileage business drivers.

The all-new Alhambra combines a high degree of usability with sporting character in true SEAT fashion. Its sophisticated running gear and extensive hi-tech equipment come together with a choice, in the UK, of three engines that combine powerful performance with outstanding efficiency.

The 2.0 TDI with 140 PS consumes only 5.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (51.4 mpg) – an absolute best in the segment. As a result, this Alhambra bears the new SEAT logo reserved for extremely low-emission models – E-Ecomotive.

Furthermore, the 150 PS 1.4 TSI and the 170 PS 2.0 TDI both feature Ecomotive technology and boast impressive fuel economy with the Stop/Start system and brake energy regeneration function as part of the SEAT efficiency package. Both display the Ecomotive logo.

“Innovation and intelligence are the key words for our new Alhambra. This is a huge step forward in terms of usability as well as in dynamics and safety,” said James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A.

“Its outstanding concept combines the highest levels of functionality and state-of-the-art technology with an excellent standard of quality and workmanship. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a SEAT if it didn’t also represent incredible value for money.”

The new generation Alhambra has the perfect format for a versatile MPV. At 4.85 metres, it is now 22 centimetres longer than its predecessor. It has also gained an additional nine centimetres in width, taking it to 1.90 metres. These dimensions deliver an exceptionally generous amount of room, with ample space in the third row for two adults.

The long sliding doors, which are also available with the option of electric operation, offer easy access to all seats. The luggage compartment is also more than generous – measuring up to 2,430 litres, almost 2.5 cubic metres, when the second row of seats is folded.

The floor of the luggage compartment always remains completely flat, even with the seats folded. When the third row seats are folded, the load surface is 1.3 metres long and is finished with high quality carpeting. With five seats in place, load capacity up to the parcel shelf is 809 litres, or 1,339 litres up to the ceiling when the optional mesh net is in place. Boot space increases to 2,430 litres when the third and second row seats are folded.

The perfect complement to the generous load capacity on the new SEAT Alhambra is the redesigned hatch. To make cargo loading even easier, an electrically operated hatch is optionally available.

The focus of development work for new Alhambra was on the intelligent and highly variable seating concept. The car is available in the UK with seven seats. With the new EasyFold system, the second and third-row seats can be retracted into the vehicle floor in just one movement. Moreover, the second-row seats can also be positioned sideways, with integrated child seats available as an option.

The design makes the dynamics of the new SEAT Alhambra clearly evident from the first glance. The car’s overall breadth, the clear lines and the distinctive wheel arches create a powerful appearance. With the arrow-shaped bonnet, the eye-catching grille and the pronounced front skirt also sporting the arrow design, this large MPV sends a clear signal that it is part of the SEAT family. A beefy roof spoiler, the downward sweep of the hatch and large light clusters dominate the rear of the vehicle.

Beneath this attractive exterior, the Alhambra is an all-new vehicle developed from the ground up and packed with the latest technology. In terms of engines the TSI and TDI power plants are all direct injection turbocharged units. The 1.4 TSI generates 150 PS, while the two 2.0 TDIs deliver 140 PS and 170 PS to the front wheels. All three engines supply the Alhambra with a powerful and refined drive.

The new Alhambra features two systems that greatly enhance its efficiency – the Stop/Start system and the Brake Energy Regeneration function, which are included as standard equipment with all engine variants available in the UK.

With an average fuel consumption of 5.5 litres per 100 km (51.4 mpg) and CO2 emissions of only 143 g/km, the Alhambra equipped with the 140 PS 2.0 TDI delivers the best environmental performance in its segment. Moreover, both TDI units feature a selective catalytic reduction SCR catalytic converter, making them among the cleanest diesel engines in the world.

The new Alhambra is equipped with a manual six-speed gearbox, or an optional dual clutch automatic. Just like the engines, this hi-tech DSG delivers the perfect combination of sporty performance, comfort and efficiency.

A wide range of innovative technologies is offered for the new Alhambra – some as optional extras. They include bi-xenon headlamps and automatic high beam disconnection.

Also new is the Park Steer Assistant that helps the Alhambra’s driver to steer into even relatively tight spaces – both parallel and perpendicular to the road. Furthermore, the car’s three-zone Climatronic guarantees comfortable cabin temperatures.

In the UK SEAT will offer the Alhambra in familiar S, SE and SE Lux form- with even the entry-level S version coming with a generous range of standard equipment. Its extensive safety package incorporates seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, child locks on the rear doors and the ESP stability system complete with trailer stabilisation function and tyre pressure monitoring display.

The new Alhambra is being manufactured at the company’s plant in Palmela, Portugal, and is already available throughout the SEAT dealership network with a range of efficient, high-performance engines and a level of equipment that includes several hi-tech systems.

Now even more practical, spacious and luxurious the new SEAT Alhambra is set to become the new benchmark in the full size MPV class.

Drivers seeking an extra level of refinement, in addition to the Exeo’s established sporting prowess, will find the new continuously variable multitronic gearbox making its Exeo debut in France presents a compelling alternative to the six-speed manual.

This efficient automatic gearbox is mated to the 143 PS (105 kW) 2.0 TDI common rail diesel injection engine. With an average fuel consumption of only 5.8* litres per 100 kilometres (48.7 mpg), this variant combines SEAT’s trademark refined dynamics and high efficiency with classic automatic ease of use.

The electronically controlled multitronic works with continuously variable ratios, enabling the engine to operate consistently at optimum efficiency. For dynamic drivers it offers both a Sport programme that results in gear shifts at higher revs, and a Manual mode controlled via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Alongside comfort and dynamics the new multitronic box delivers impressive economy. The mechanical efficiency and broad ratio spread of this hi-tech gearbox ensure low fuel consumption and emissions.

There have been other important changes to the Exeo range, too, which now make the cars even more roomy and comfortable.

Small but significant revisions to the front seat back and rear bench designs result in an appreciably larger rear passenger compartment. Thanks to the redesigned front seats and rear bench, room in the back has now increased by 44 millimetres without any sacrifice in seating comfort or luggage space.

Of course quality remains a key ingredient in the Exeo and the final revision unveiled on the Paris Show car further underline SEAT’s ambition to make the model the most desirable in its class. New rear lights featuring LED technology – offered in combination with the bi-xenon headlights – make the hi-tech appeal of the Exeo immediately apparent.

Coinciding with its showroom debut in the UK this month SEAT is today revealing full price and specification details of its new Ibiza ST.

The exciting third ‘silhouette’ in the SEAT line-up joins the sporty Ibiza SC and practical Ibiza 5dr to make today’s Ibiza range the most extensive in the Spanish supermini’s 25-year history.

Another sleek product of the pen of SEAT’s chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke, the estate version of SEAT’s biggest seller is, clearly, created to offer more carrying capacity without compromising on the sporty style that makes the Ibiza one of the most dynamic and eye-catching superminis on the road.

Boot space is up 138 litres over the 5dr taking the car’s carrying capacity to a sizable 430 litres (seats up) meaning, among other things, that the ST offers a great value alternative to many apparently larger family hatchbacks from the class above.

Offered from launch with a broad variety of engines, including sporty turbocharged petrols and frugal latest generation turbodiesels, and with the option of a familiar five-speed manual or hi-tech seven-speed DSG gearbox, the new SEAT is even available to order in super-frugal Ecomotive form, with CO2 emissions confirmed at a road tax-busting 92 g/km and an exceptional combined fuel economy figure of 80.7 mpg.

The extensive array of modern engines includes a newly EUV-compliant 1.4 and rises to a turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI that’s available with manual or ‘self-shifter’ DSG ‘box. Diesel Ibiza ST buyers are offered the choice of a refined 75 PS 1.2-litre TDI CR – also available in the Ecomotive version – or a potent 1.6-litre TDI CR that’s good for 105 PS at 4,400 rpm.

Performance is fully in keeping with the Spanish brand’s sporty ethos and the most dynamic version at launch, the 1.2 TSI with DSG-auto, covers the 0-62 mph dash in a spirited 10.1 seconds before charging on, where legal, to a top speed of 118 mph.

Clearly, Ibiza ST buyers will be looking for practicality as well as sporty style, though, and to that end the new car includes a selection of common sense features that make it as ‘sensible’ as it is ‘chic’.

Split folding rear sears with a 60/40 bias, sleek roof rails in either black or chrome finish, a carefully designed low load height and wide rear hatch, a flat boot floor and innovative storage options throughout the ST’s smart interior enable it to work with effortless efficiency.

Available to order now in SEAT’s familiar and clear model line-up of S A/C, SE and Sport, the new Ibiza ST costs from just £12,070 RRP for the entry-level 1.4-litre 16V S A/C. Prices rise through engine and equipment levels to a current ceiling of £14,910 for the Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI CR Ecomotive in luxurious SE spec.

No matter what their budget, though, all Ibiza ST buyers can look forward to a generous complement of standard-fit kit including, among much else: air conditioning; four-speaker stereo radio with MP3-compatible CD and AUX-in; steering column-mounted audio controls; electric front windows; roof rails; speed sensitive electro-hydraulic power steering; volumetric alarm and remote central locking with deadlocks.

Like its Barcelona-built cousins the Ibiza SC and Ibiza 5dr, the new Ibiza ST boasts a liberal list of safety features as standard. All versions feature head and chest airbags for both driver and front seat passenger, head-thorax front side airbags, front passenger airbag disconnection, ABS and three three-point rear seatbelts.

Optionally available, depending on engine and spec choices, are other features such as SEAT’s clever electronic XDS system – which mimics the function of a conventional limited slip differential – and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).

On the subject of options, Ibiza ST buyers are able to specify an extensive array of extras to make their new car even more luxurious. Among the items available are: climate control (including a refrigerated glove compartment); Bi-xenon headlights with AFS, headlight washers and daytime running lights; a panoramic glass sunroof (in lieu of roof rails) and a variety of alloy wheels that, depending on spec, can measure up to 17 inches.

Welcoming the latest addition to the stylish Ibiza ‘family’ SEAT UK Product Manager Andy McGregor said: ‘Our new ST shows that small cars really can be both roomy and stylish.

‘The car’s arrival in SEAT showrooms makes the Ibiza line-up not only the most extensive in our history but, also, the most practical and attractive. I’m sure we’ll see the new Ibiza ST carve out a very successful niche for itself as buyers latch onto its great looks, flexibility and convenience.

Just weeks after SEAT launched its most economical Leon to date in the shape of the latest Ecomotive the stylish Spanish brand is teeing up the showroom debut of its most potent Leon yet: the awesome Cupra R.

While the green-themed new Ecomotive with its road tax-busting CO2 rating of just 99g/km is all about economy and environmental responsibility the 265 PS Cupra R is, undeniably, aimed at ultra-hot hatch enthusiasts with high octane fuel coursing through their veins.

Storming into UK showrooms now, and due to face the glare of the nation’s motoring media at a launch event in the next few days, the latest Leon is nothing less than the most powerful SEAT yet offered for sale in the brand’s 25-year UK history.

That 265 PS power peak is the product of a tuned2.0-litre, four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine – revised by the engineers at SEAT’s state-of-the-art Technical Centre in Martorell to make it more potent, even, than the current Leon Cupra which is good for a still impressive 240 PS from its 2.0-litre powerplant.

The 16V petrol engine features a new, high-pressure fuel pump injector to satisfy the greater performance demands and allow it to meet strict EU5 emissions standards while revisions to the electronic engine management system, plus increased maximum turbo pressure (1.9 bar at max output and 2.2 bar at max torque, versus 1.8 bar for the 240 PS 2.0-litre TSI in Leon Cupra) complete the powerplant changes beneath the SEAT’s svelte ‘clamshell’ bonnet.

The torque generated by the new Cupra R’s refined and willing engine is, arguably, even more impressive than its power peak. No less than 350 Nm is on offer at just 2,500 rpm – that’s a full 50 Nm more than the already muscular Leon Cupra.

Naturally, the challenge of harnessing all this urge in a front-wheel drive set-up has been comprehensively met by SEAT’s engineers who have applied a host of effective yet unobtrusive aids to the task.

XDS – SEAT’s clever electronic system which uses enhanced ABS functionality to mimic the operation of a traditional limited slip differential – ESP stability control, TCS traction control and EBA emergency braking assistance are among the new car’s standard-fit kit and work together to help keep things on the straight and narrow.

The result? Near-supercar levels of acceleration and performance. The benchmark 0-62 mph dash is dispatched in only 6.2 seconds while, where legal, Leon Cupra R drivers can thence press onward to a top speed of 155 mph. Impressive stuff.

As impressive, perhaps, is the new Leon’s frugality. Combined economy of 34.9 mpg and CO2 limited to just 190 g/km make the newcomer among the ‘greenest’ ultra-hot hatches around. Not green enough to qualify for the brand’s Ecomotive badge, of course, but markedly more environmentally responsible than a number of rivals which have CO2 emissions of 220 g/km and above.

The Cupra R’s standard six-speed manual gearbox has not escaped the development engineers’ attention either: modifications include a shorter ‘throw’ (down by six millimetres) to help the driver achieve even faster changes.

As stylish as it is swift, the latest Leon has undergone a number of bespoke styling modifications, inside and out, to elevate its kerbside appeal and deliver the necessary air of exclusivity demanded by what will be an elite hot hatch.

Among the changes are the addition of sporty twin central exit exhaust pipes within a customised rear diffuser, discreet extended high level rear spoiler, subtle ‘R’ badging and the careful application of gloss black highlighting inside and out.

The new ebony black front seatbacks even give rear seat occupants a taste of the Cupra R cabin upgrade, while the prominent ‘R’ logo incorporated on the seatbacks leaves no one in any doubt about the identity of this super-quick SEAT.

Mighty 19-inch ‘Potenza’ wheels, available in traditional silver alloy or contemporary white finish, mark out the ‘R’ as something extra special and ensure the car becomes the first SEAT model to use 19-inch wheels on this platform.

UK pricing for the new Leon Cupra R is confirmed at £25,205, production is limited to around 500 in a full year, and the first customer cars are due to be delivered within weeks.

Welcoming the long-awaited arrival of SEAT’s most powerful model to date the brand’s UK Product Marketing Manager, Andy Medcraft, said: ‘The Leon Cupra R is a special car for us not just because it is the most powerful, fastest and most extreme production model we have yet made.

‘It also clearly illustrates what makes SEAT stand out from the crowd, and is our brand’s familiar ‘auto emoción’ slogan made metal.

‘We’re anticipating a huge surge of interest around the showroom debut of this exclusive car and I know our dealers nationwide can’t wait to welcome it.’

SEAT is launching its best-specified cars yet with the showroom debut this summer of new Exeo Tech and Exeo ST Tech models.

The luxurious new cars, which are available to order now and join the existing Exeo line-up of S, SE, Sport and SE Lux versions, add thousands of pounds worth of extra standard equipment to the already well-specified models for the paltry sum of just £875.

Included as standard in the new SE Tech and Sport Tech cars are DVD-based colour screen satellite navigation, BOSE premium audio upgrade, luxurious black leather upholstery and an iPod connection in lieu of the standard glove compartment-mounted USB port.

Together, priced as options, these highly desirable extras would previously have cost an Exeo SE or Sport customer £3,270 yet the price of the same Exeo SE Tech or Exeo ST Sport Tech, featuring the enhanced specification, rises by just £875. Or, to put it another way, by opting for a Tech model the Exeo buyer is saving a very handy £2,395 RRP.

Model derivative

Price (RRP)

SEAT Exeo 2.0 TDI CR 143 PS SE Tech

£21,270

SEAT Exeo 2.0 TDI CR 143 PS Sport Tech

£22,235

SEAT Exeo 2.0 TDI CR 170 PS Sport Tech

£23,155

SEAT Exeo ST 2.0 TDI CR 143 PS SE Tech

£22,290

SEAT Exeo ST 2.0 TDI CR 143 PS Sport Tech

£23,255

SEAT Exeo ST 2.0 TDI CR 170 PS Sport Tech

£24,175

Tailored, in particular, to the demands of fleet and business buyers who make up the lion’s share of Exeo customers, the new Tech pack includes the most popular selection of extras for buyers in this sector and, crucially, adds significant value.

The BOSE premium sound system upgrade, for example, sees both saloon and ST versions of the Exeo gain ten high performance BOSE speakers, a digital amplifier featuring BOSE Digital Signal Processing, AudioPilot noise compensation technology and five channels of customised equalisation.

The financial proposition stands up, too. Building on the already solid residual value predictions for the executive class SEAT (CAP Monitor valuation: 31%, three years/60,000 miles, Exeo 2.0 TDI 143 PS SE) it is expected that the new Tech versions will boast further enhanced residuals which will, of course, please cost-conscious fleet managers.

And company car drivers will be eagerly eyeing the calculator, too. Previously, to have secured such a luxuriously specified Exeo they would have needed to check several options boxes thereby driving up the car’s RRP and, consequently, Benefit In Kind tax.

Now though, thanks to the arrival of the Exeo Tech specification, the company car tax implications are negligible. In fact the increase in BIK for 20% tax payers opting to drive an Exeo 2.0 TDI 143 PS SE Tech over a standard Exeo SE amounts to just £33.25 a year, or a measly £2.77 a month.

Nick Andrews, SEAT UK Head of Fleet and Business Sales, said: ‘Since its launch just 12 months ago the Exeo, and its estate sibling the Exeo ST, have been quietly building a reputation for great value among fleets and business customers nationwide.

‘Now, with the debut of these luxuriously specified Tech versions, I’m confident even more people will come to appreciate the exceptional value provided by these executive class SEATs.

As a genuine Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the new SEAT Alhambra offers far more than simply plenty of space for family, business and hobbies. Its innovative versatility fits just as well to family requirements as it does to the demands of the high-mileage business driver.

Just like every SEAT, sporting character and driving fun go hand-in-hand with practicality and innovation. Thanks to its surprisingly dynamic handling, engaging powerplants and the latest hi-tech equipment, drivers can look forward to every mile behind the wheel of the new car.

And, with the potential for a combined fuel consumption figure of more than 51 mpg, the new Alhambra sets a benchmark in its segment.

James Muir, SEAT S.A. President, said: ‘Innovation and intelligence are the keywords for our new Alhambra. It represents a major step forward in terms of usability as well as dynamics and safety.

‘Its impressive concept combines the highest levels of functionality and state-of-the-art technology with excellent quality and workmanship. This also includes – in typical SEAT fashion – exceptional value-for-money.’

Measuring 4.85 metres bumper to bumper the new Alhambra is 22 centimetres longer than its predecessor, while it is also wider by a full nine centimetres. There’s plenty of room for adults to sit comfortably, even in the third row, while the large sliding doors (with optional electric operation) allow especially easy entry.

Luggage space is more than generous, too. When configured as a five-seater the new SEAT has 885 litres of load space available, which grows to a cavernous maximum of 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use.

Central to the new car’s development has been the intelligent and extremely versatile seating concept – the new Alhambra comes with seating for five, six or seven. Unlike its predecessor if more storage room is called for the second and third-row seats need no longer be removed; instead, they can be sunk easily into the vehicle floor using the “Easy-Fold” system.

The middle row seats can also be arranged longitudinally, with integrated child seats available as an option. Meanwhile the seating position of both the driver and front seat passenger combines the best visibility with a sporty feel and ideal ergonomics.

Looks-wise, the new Alhambra clearly conveys its dynamic character through its design. Broad, taut proportions; clear lines and the distinctive wheel arches give it a powerful presence and a level of sporting appeal that’s extremely unusual in the MPV sector.

With its arrow-shaped bonnet, hallmark grille and distinctive front skirt continuing the Arrow Design, the new Alhambra clearly displays its SEAT DNA. The sleek side profile shows great technical precision, with the sliding doors perfectly integrated. The muscular spoiler on the rear edge of the roof, the low-reaching rear hatch and the expansive light clusters dominate the rear end.

Beneath its attractive skin, the Alhambra is new in every detail and equipped with state-of-the-art technology throughout. First and foremost there’s the new engine line-up, where the TSI and both TDI power units are equipped with direct fuel injection and turbocharging. The TSI unit delivers 150 PS, while the two TDI engines offer 140 PS and 170 PS. Further efficiency measures fitted as standard include a Start-Stop system and brake energy recovery technology. These guarantee refined pulling power alongside exceptional economy.

With an average fuel consumption of more than 51 mpg and CO2 emissions of just 143 g/km, the 140 PS SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI sets a clear benchmark in its class. The Alhambra TDI is also equipped with an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction), making the diesel model one of the world’s cleanest MPVs.

Just like the TSI and TDI engines, the optional DSG dual-clutch transmission delivers a perfect combination of sporting character, comfort and efficiency. But it’s the range of state-of-the-art and innovative technologies offered as optional equipment on the new Alhambra that really stand out. Among the highlights are the SEAT’s bi-xenon headlamps with adaptive control and new full beam assistant. In this system, a sensor detects oncoming vehicles and automatically dips the beam.

Also new is the park/steer assistant, which autonomously manoeuvres the Alhambra into tight parking spaces. A rear view camera delivers an image of the world behind the vehicle while the optional panorama sliding roof has an opening that is 300% larger than a conventional sunroof. The new car’s optional three-zone Climatronic ensures an optimum temperature in all seats while electric motors simplify the operation of the sliding doors and rear hatch.

Standard safety equipment is already well above the industry average. In the new Alhambra it encompasses seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, and electric child locks on the rear doors. Also standard are ABS and ESP, including electronic braking assistant, trailer stabilisation and tyre pressure monitoring display.

Once again produced in Palmela, Portugal, the new Alhambra goes on sale in its home market this summer. More details of the UK range, including specification and pricing details, will be available closer to the car’s launch here later this year.

Driving School.

The deal will see What Car? Driving School’s nationwide network of franchised instructors slip behind the wheel of one of a range of stylish new Ibiza 5drs.

After looking at a number of manufacturers, the new venture opted for SEAT. Andy Mitchell, What Car? Driving School Sales and Marketing Director, said: ‘We had a very demanding requirement for cars that tick all the obvious boxes of reliability, quality, safety and economy.

‘However we also wanted to factor in our instructors’ and learners’ requirements for style and ‘kerbside appeal’ and that, crucially, is where the SEAT Ibiza stands out.’

SEAT UK’s National Fleet Sales Manager Sally Livingstone negotiated the 250-car agreement. She said: ‘The opportunity to support this impressive new venture by one of the UK’s premier motoring brands is a fantastic coup for SEAT.

‘I’m sure the school’s network of instructors, and their pupils, will be delighted with their Ibiza experience and I look forward to seeing these distinctive cars appearing across the country.’

Sally added: ‘The addition of What Car? to our growing list of ‘blue chip’ brand clients further underlines our determination to make SEAT a fleet manufacturer of choice.’

The new What Car? Driving School launched towards the end of 2009 with the simple aim of becoming the best driving school in Britain. Using only fully qualified Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors, the school pledges a trusted driver training solution that satisfies demanding customers’ requirements.

Managing director, Paul Atkinson, said: ‘What Car? Driving School brings a new level of consumer trust into the driver training market. It combines the most authoritative voice in motoring with years of expertise in the driving school field.’

What Car? editor Steve Fowler added: ‘The What Car? Driving School is one of our most exciting brand extensions of recent years. We’re passionate about improving the standard of driving on UK roads, and this gives us an excellent opportunity to do that with new drivers.’

The new SEAT Leon Cupra R is preparing to roar into UK showrooms becoming, in the process, the most powerful production car yet offered by SEAT UK.

With 265 PS available from its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the fire-breathing new Leon resurrects the iconic Cupra R badge last seen on the sleek Spaniard back in 2006.

More than that, the car also becomes SEAT’s quickest-accelerating model to date with a 0-62 mph time of just 6.2 seconds while the top speed, where legal, of 155 mph is also SEAT’s highest ever ‘flat out’ figure.

The new car’s immense torque peak of 350 Nm at just 2,500 rpm is a full 50 Nm more than the already muscular Leon Cupra, and puts SEAT’s newcomer ahead of the likes of the Honda Civic Type R GT (193 Nm); Lotus Exige 1.8 S Performance (230 Nm) and even the Alfa Romeo Brera 3.2 JTS V6 (322 Nm).

A comparatively priced BMW 120i M Sport Coupe, meanwhile, can muster just 210 Nm of pulling power.

Engineers at SEAT’s state-of-the-art Technical Centre in Martorell have worked to modify the existing 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine’s electronic management system as well as boost maximum turbo pressure to generate the Cupra R’s extra power and torque.

A revised high pressure fuel injection pump and reworked ratios within the Leon’s crisp six-speed manual gearbox are further indications of the careful re-engineering that has gone into this SEAT record-breaker.

A beguiling mix of Latin passion and practicality, this new ‘super SEAT’ remains, of course, the rational choice for ultra-hot hatch buyers who want sporty coupé looks allied to five-door functionality.

Official CO2 emissions from the SEAT’s EU5-compliant engine stand at just 190 g/km – an exceptionally low figure for a car with such exceptional performance – while official figures show combined economy to be just a whisker off 35 mpg, similarly compelling for such a spirited hot hatch.

Beyond the raw performance and economy statistics is the new Leon’s unique styling which has been calculated to underscore its exclusive nature. Bespoke styling changes, inside and out, elevate the new Cupra R’s kerbside appeal.

The addition of sporty twin central exit exhaust pipes within a customised rear diffuser, discreet extended high level rear spoiler, subtle ‘R’ badging and the careful application of gloss black highlighting inside and out give the forthcoming Leon its exclusive appeal.

Mighty 19-inch Potenza alloys, prominent ‘R’ badging on the back of the quilted leather bucket-style front sports seats and a specially created SEAT Sport engine cover continue the exclusive styling.

Offered in a typically sunny selection of eye-catching colours, the Catalan creation arrives with the option of new Custom Palette shades including a stunning new metallic yellow called Tribu.

UKpricing for the new Leon Cupra R is confirmed at £25,205, with orders books opening at dealers nationwide on Thursday 1 April.

Welcoming the UK arrival of the brand’s most extreme model to date, SEAT UK Product Marketing Manager Andy Medcraft said: ‘The engineering and styling revisions that have gone into the new Leon Cupra R underline our determination to make this exceptional new car a true class leader.

‘The car neatly encapsulates everything that sets SEAT apart from the plethora of other hot hatches around and I’m sure that existing Leon owners, and drivers who have yet to try SEAT, will be thrilled to see its arrival in British showrooms.’

Making its world debut at the 80th International Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland this week, the forthcoming Ibiza ST promises space and style in equal measure.

The Spanish brand’s latest addition to the already popular Ibiza family which currently comprises both sporty SC and practical 5dr bodystyles – the ST adds accomplished load-carrying to the Ibiza’s list of attractive family traits thanks to a capacious 430-litre load bay (rear seats up).

Making its debut in the metal alongside the stunning SEAT IBE electric concept car, the production-ready Ibiza ST prepares to fight for a slice of the UK’s supermini estate market and is geared to take on the likes of the Peugeot 207 SW and MINI Clubman in the process.

In the UK, the new arrival from Martorell will debut with no fewer than five modern engines and an extensive array of equipment and new technologies.

At launch later this year, British buyers will get a choice of three petrol and two TDI diesel units with the latest common-rail fuel injection. Four of the five engines operate with direct injection and turbocharging and outputs span from 75 PS to 105 PS. Highlights include the exceptionally efficient new 1.2 TDI common rail diesel and 1.2 TSI.

Transmission options comprise both five-speed manual and six-speed dual clutch DSG automatic/sequential manual ‘boxes, while every new Ibiza ST will be offered with a combination of ventilated front disc brakes and either disc or drum rear brakes.

The new Ibiza model’s range structure in the UK will mirror that of its familiar siblings, with versions available in S A/C, SE and Sport specs.

Generous levels of standard equipment across the range, allied to the new SEAT’s undeniably elegant lines, promise to help the Ibiza ST make an instant impression. Buyers in the UK can, therefore, look forward to the availability of all manner of creature comforts.

Highlights of the ST’s standard equipment roster in the UK include, depending on model: speed-sensitive electro-hydraulic power steering; electrically adjustable, heated and folding door mirrors; electric windows front and rear; front fog lights with cornering function and climate control.

Performance is fully in line with the Spanish brand’s sporty ethos so, despite being a practical load carrier, the Ibiza ST will not be left wanting on the road. Provisional performance figures suggest a 0 to 62 mph time of as little as 10.1 seconds – for the version equipped with SEAT’s new 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS powerplant – while that same version is also capable of a top speed of 118 mph.

Provisional economy figures suggest that the Ibiza ST will be as frugal as it is practical. When equipped with SEAT’s hi-tech EU5-compliant 1.6-litre TDI CR turbodiesel with latest generation common rail fuelling the forthcoming supermini estate will be good for more than 55 mpg around town, rising to 78.5 mpg on the extra urban cycle.

Welcoming the public debut of the Ibiza ST in Geneva, Head of SEAT UK Peter Wyhinny said: ‘The arrival of our new supermini estate marks another important milestone for the growing Ibiza family.

‘This sleek, practical yet sporty new car is certain to appeal to a wide variety of drivers and I know our dealers are eagerly anticipating its UK showroom debut later this year.’

UK pricing and full specification details will be revealed closer to the car’s showroom launch.

Just ahead of Monday 1 March and the arrival of what is, traditionally, the busiest month for new car sales of the year, SEAT is unveiling a tempting package of offers on its executive class models.

The exciting Spanish brand’s elegant Exeo saloon and capacious Exeo ST, both launched here just last year, are increasingly turning the heads of cost- and style-savvy business and private buyers alike.

Now, with the latest suite of retail deals, SEAT is making its upper medium segment models that much more enticing.

The highlight of the special March offers is an attractive three-year (36-month) 0% finance deal on the bulk of the Exeo and Exeo ST range that requires a deposit of around 40%.

Offered on all but entry ‘S’ trim level and any 120 PS models the new offer means, for instance, that the biggest-selling Exeo saloon – the luxurious SE 2.0 TDI 143 PS – is now available to qualifying retail buyers from just £339 per month, subject to terms and conditions.

Meanwhile, for those qualifying retail buyers not opting to grab the 0% finance deal there’s a new three-year free servicing offer on all new Exeos and STs registered before the end of March 2010. The Exeo servicing offer runs for three years/30,000 miles and covers three scheduled services, plus pollen filter and brake fluid changes.

Of course not every SEAT sold during the busy month of March is going to be new. The Spaniards’ used car sales go from strength to strength – 2009 saw SEAT notch up all-time record used car sales in the UK – and 2010 is shaping up to be much the same.

So, to boost the appeal still further of the very first wave of approved used SEAT Exeos available in the UK, the firm is offering two years’ free servicing and 12-month MOT insurance on selected used examples sold at participating dealers before the end of March.

The offer covers two scheduled services and, like the rest of the retail deals mentioned, is available at participating SEAT dealers nationwide.

<img src="http://motoring-news.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/050210-a-sea+-e1265558991401.jpg" alt="" title="050210-a-sea+" width="349" height="228" align="left" size-full wp-image-2795" />The Ibiza ST is the third silhouette to join the Spaniards’ supermini line-up and significantly expands SEAT’s presence in this important market segment.

The new arrival from Martorell debuts with no fewer than five modern engines and an extensive array of equipment and new technologies.

SEAT’s renowned design team, led by Luc Donckerwolke, has taken the highly functional concept of the Ibiza ST and clad it in the Spanish brand’s unique design language. Despite the estate layout and generous load capacity the newcomer retains the youthful, sporty character of the rest of the Ibiza range.

The roofline stretches rearwards, the rear overhang is integrated perfectly into the overall design and the tight span of its flanks lends tautness to its proportions. The front end bears the hallmark of SEAT’s now trademark ‘Arrow Design’ with the rear end receiving a new look courtesy of the split rear light clusters.

Measuring 4.23 metres in length, the Ibiza ST is 18 centimetres longer than the Ibiza hatch. This creates ample load capacity to satisfy the varied requirements of ST owners. The new car’s base luggage capacity of 430 litres is already comparatively generous, and can be easily increased in stages by folding the split rear seats.

SEAT’s engineers have also paid particularly close attention to the optimal width and low height of the load opening.

Sporty dynamics with a high degree of efficiency are par for the course with every SEAT. State-of-the-art engines see the Ibiza ST offer, in the UK, a choice of three petrol and two TDI units with the latest common-rail fuel injection. Four of the five engines operate with direct injection and turbocharging. Outputs span 85 PS to 105 PS and highlights include the exceptionally efficient new 1.2 TDI and 1.2 TSI.

Aside from a generous standard spec’ the new Ibiza ST will also offer hi-tech optional equipment including SEAT’s impressive dual clutch DSG automatic/sequential manual gearbox.

More details about the new car’s specification, pricing and model line-up will be revealed closer to its UK on-sale date this summer.

Continuing the relentless product offensive that in 2009 helped SEAT to an all-time record UK market share of 1.50% (source: SMMT) the sporty Spanish car maker is starting 2010 with yet more exciting new models.

First among these and sure to pique the interest of style- and cost-conscious drivers alike comes an important addition to the Ibiza range in the shape of the Ibiza FR TDI, available in either sporty SC or practical 5dr bodystyles with prices starting at just £16,465 RRP.

Available to order now at SEAT dealerships nationwide with deliveries set to begin in March, the diesel-powered extension to the already impressive Ibiza FR offering underlines SEAT’s commitment to the burgeoning diesel hot hatch class.

The new car’s turbocharged diesel engine is good for a muscular 143 PS – enough to carry it from rest to 62 mph in only 8.2 seconds (8.3 seconds 5dr) and thence onward to a top speed of 130 mph where legal (129 mph 5dr).

Linked as standard to a smooth and precise six-speed manual gearbox the state-of-the-art common rail diesel is fully Euro V-compliant and, in this application, helps the Ibiza to record not only exceptional performance but also remarkable economy.

The fast yet frugal FR TDI is capable of returning 62.7 mpg on the EU’s official combined cycle and the car records an official CO2 figure of just 119 g/km, making it the tax efficient choice both in terms of road fund licence and business drivers’ benefit in kind liabilities.

The option of a 5dr FR, as well as the familiar SC bodystyle which helps SEAT’s petrol-powered hot hatch turn so many heads, means the diesel version is set to have even broader appeal and will doubtless get the attention of drivers looking for a touch more practicality with their auto emoción.

As is customary in today’s SEATs, the Ibiza FR TDI arrives packed to the gunwales with attractive, useful and downright fun equipment.

Standard specification in the newcomer includes climate control, ESP with SEAT’s clever new XDS electronic ‘virtual’ limited slip differential and, of course, exclusive FR detailing inside and out.

SEAT UK’s Ibiza Product Manager, Andy McGregor, said: ‘The arrival of the Ibiza FR TDI signals our intention to make SEAT a leader in the supermini sector.

‘The exceptional success of the Leon FR TDI – it’s the best-selling model in the entire Leon range – proves beyond doubt that we understand the needs of today’s hot hatch fans. The outstanding economy, and performance, offered by these new Ibiza FR TDI models means these cars, too, should power to the top of their class.’

SEAT is getting straight to the ‘point’ with a cheeky new advertising campaign which appears online, on TV and across the printed media from 19 December.

The dramatic new ads see SEAT put a typically irreverent spin on the classical legend of Cupid, with a winged archer flying above the stunning new SEAT Ibiza Cupra and targeting people as they see the car for the first time.

The heart-shaped arrows he fires cause everyone who sees the car to fall in love with it – a natural reaction, of course, that’s already happening in SEAT showrooms across the country.

The multi-million pound campaign, which also features 4,000 bus stop billboards nationwide as well as print ads in glossy lifestyle titles such as Empire, Q, Heat, Closer and Now, will run well into 2010 as SEAT looks to build on a record-breaking 12 months of new and used car sales.

The adverts were filmed over the course of five nights in the central business district of Johannesburg in South Africa and use the latest computer-generated imagery, plus super-slow motion cameras, to create the unique pictures we’ll see on our screens.

Fully exploiting the growing influence of digital social media, SEAT’s winged love warrior will be starting his own Facebook page while ‘viral’ videos of both the TV advert and an interview with its main character will be appearing on YouTube.

SEAT UK National Communications Manager Rob Taylor said: ‘The premise of this campaign is built around the obvious love for SEAT’s sexy new Ibiza models.

‘But, SEAT being SEAT, we knew we couldn’t go for the clichéd image of a Cupid-style persona. We wanted to develop a different type of character, an archer with real attitude and street cred who spreads the love for Ibiza in an inimitable way.’

SEAT is celebrating a strong and consistent improvement in the quality of its cars, with the latest SEAT Ibiza performing particularly well.

New figures from the stylish Spanish car maker show instances of manufacturer warranty claims for cars built between 2006 and 2009 have plunged by a massive 35% in the UK, while the number of warranty claims relating to the Ibiza – SEAT’s biggest-selling model both here and around the world – have tumbled by 38%.

This exceptional improvement in the number of claims, which relates to vehicles that have been in service for 12 months, results from a sustained and ongoing focus on improving SEAT vehicle quality at every stage of design, development and construction.

Instrumental in this is the SEAT Technical Centre, based at the firm’s HQ in Martorell near Barcelona, which employs more than 1,000 highly-trained staff.

The Technical Centre boasts cutting-edge equipment such as acoustic, climatic and sunlight reproduction cameras, fatigue test benches for components and entire vehicles, engine analysis equipment, pollution testing areas, test rigs for bodywork rigidity and laser welding and material laboratories.

In 2007 SEAT, a member of the Volkswagen Group, also opened both a new centralised Design Centre and state-of-the-art Prototype Development Centre at Martorell – bringing its entire production process together in one city for the first time in a move that has benefited both innovation and quality.

The good news on quality extends to older SEATs, too, with statistics from Mondial Assistance UK, the extended warranty provider to SEAT UK’s Approved Used Car Scheme, showing the Spanish brand’s vehicles are infrequent visitors to the repair bay.

For instance, this year just nine per cent of the thousands of four- to seven-year-old SEAT Ibizas covered by Mondial Assistance UK have been the subject of a warranty claim.

A spokesman for Mondial Assistance UK said: ‘Our figures show very clearly that the quality inherent in SEAT models speaks for itself.’

Celebrating the good news on both manufacturer and extended warranty claims, SEAT UK Head of Aftersales Nigel Griggs said: ‘The relentless pursuit of further improved reliability and build quality across the SEAT range is key to our success.

‘We’re determined to help our customers feel confident in the dependability of today’s SEAT range including the stylish Ibiza, sporty Leon and luxurious Exeo.’

The super-frugal SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive has once again proved its green credentials by clocking up astonishing average fuel economy of more than 120 miles to the gallon on a mammoth 1,186-mile tour of 12 European countries.

Austrian economy driving specialist Gerhard Plattner set the new record of 120.4 mpg at the wheel of the fuel-sipping Spanish supermini. His latest feat follows a debut drive back in April when Herr Plattner notched up an average of 97.4 mpg on a drive from the SEAT S.A. company HQ at Martorell near Barcelona in Spain to Göttingen in Germany.

This time Herr Plattner set out from Cieszyn in Poland after the IPMC (International Police Motor Corporation) sealed both the SEAT’s bonnet and its fuel filler. Then, with around 45 litres of fuel at his disposal, the Austrian economy ace embarked on his ambitious tour of 12 European states.

Herr Plattner drove through the cities of Mosty (Czech Republic), Bratislava (Slovakia), Hegyeshalom (Hungary), Graz (Austria), Varazdin (Croatia), Maribor (Slovenia), Toblach (Italy), Innsbruck (Austria), Schaan (Principality of Liechtenstein), Zurich (Switzerland) and Saint-Louis (France) to finish off in Frankfurt (Germany).

When he switched off the Ibiza Ecomotive’s engine for the last time, the seal on the fuel tank was still intact and the SEAT’s new economy record for its segment was certified.

Optimised aerodynamics, weight reduction and modifications to the 80 PS 1.4 TDI engine’s electronic management have delivered one of the cleanest cars on the market today.

The Ibiza Ecomotive is available in both SC and 5dr body styles and costs from £12,355 RRP. Official stats show it is capable of 94.2 mpg on the extra urban cycle, or 76.3 mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are put at just 98 g/km – meaning the SEAT is both exempt from Road Tax in the UK and is joint best in its class.

However, exceptional economy does not mean Ecomotive buyers have to endure austere equipment levels. Among the Ibiza’s standard-fit items are air conditioning, electric front windows, trip computer and six-speaker AM/FM radio with MP3 compatible CD player and AUX-in connection.

The Ibiza Ecomotive sits alongside a growing array of economy-minded models in the Spanish firm’s line-up. Aside from the seven-seat Alhambra Ecomotive and current Leon Ecomotive, SEAT used the recent Frankfurt Motor Show to debut further additions to its green car stable.

Set to join the line-up in due course, SEAT showcased the new Altea Ecomotive and Altea XL Ecomotive, as well as a second generation Leon Ecomotive model which cuts its CO2 emissions to a remarkable 99 g/km.

The new Leon model is a full 20 g/km better than its predecessor thanks to the addition of Auto Start/Stop and energy recuperation functions, allied to engineering advances provided by the use of a new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine.

Meanwhile, the new Altea Ecomotive and Altea XL Ecomotive record official emissions figures of just 119 g/km CO2 making them among the most environmentally responsible models in their segment.

SEAT is showcasing the stunning IBZ Concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The star of the SEAT stand in Germany previews a new, family-sized version of the Ibiza that will make its debut in showrooms across Europe towards the middle of next year.

Boasting a modern, tensioned silhouette, the concept car making its world debut at the IAA includes numerous distinctive exterior and interior design features, and benefits from cutting-edge technology for a gripping driving experience.

Once again, SEAT Design Director Luc Donckerwolke has applied his pragmatic vision to create an attractive yet functional car where comfort and roominess complement the traditional sports philosophy common to all SEATs.

The world debut of the bold IBZ Concept is another significant step on the company’s path to extending its range line-up. The challenge it meets is to combine a larger, family-sized chassis featuring greater load capacity with the distinct, feisty personality of the Ibiza.

Imposing front view

The nose of the concept car shows an elegant evolution of SEAT’s now trademark Arrow Design. The bonnet features a new ‘running edge’, splitting the car through its longitudinal axis, adding precision and sharpness to the familiar Ibiza face. Taut ‘eyebrows’ accentuate the headlights, whose diamond-shaped interior combines LED technology with light guides.

The new centre grille, with honeycomb slats and aluminium surround, is underlined by the same purist, rectangular air vents found on the Ibiza Cupra. Another development at the front sees the usual arrow shape enhanced by a set of lines parallel to the headlights, finishing at the broad opening beneath the bumper. Two aluminium mouldings in this area round off the front end design.

Very clearly styled to stand out, the IBZ Concept boasts an attractive sweep created by the newly-designed headlights, complete with LED technology. Their pointed tips provide continuity to the Dynamic Line that brushes over the wings and the middle of the front doors, while their novel interior structure mimics the facets of a diamond. One set generates the main beam, while the smaller LEDs generate the dipped beam. At the same time, a portion of the smaller facets at the top of the cluster serve as daytime driving lights, with the indicator LEDs at the bottom.

The exterior design of SEAT’s prototype is enhanced by its high gloss, eye-catching blue paint colour while a broad panoramic sunroof floods the interior with light.

The LED indicator lights literally stand out, as they are built into the new streamlined door mirrors – each one mounted onto its door with a pair of arms. The exterior arm which supports the mirror, and the mirror’s outer casing are both aluminium to match the other trim elements found on the car.

A side view reveals low profile 235/35 tyres on attractive, five double-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, each with an embossed ‘S’ at the hub. Another tell-tale SEAT feature of the IBZ Concept are the Leon-inspired rear passenger door handles, which are neatly integrated into the third side windows.

The attention-grabbing new hatch naturally bears the SEAT logo and when the rear hatch is open, its structure has a very low load floor that sits flush with the number plate. Meanwhile, the broad rear window provides great visibility. An elegant, high-mount roof spoiler houses the third brake light – underlining the car’s sporting intent.

As usual, the SEAT logo doubles as the boot handle mechanism and the prototype is easily identified by the ‘IBZ’ initials beneath the logo in the centre of the hatch.

The crisp rear section of the IBZ Concept is further enhanced by the addition of defined ‘shoulders’ that house the light clusters. As with the striking headlights, they feature LED technology on a raised surface. From bottom to top, the LEDs create the sidelights, brake, reverse and indicator lights.

The final highlights rounding off the view of the rear are a new bumper, which has a built-in number plate, a number plate light at the bottom of the hatch and split twin tailpipes, which each boast a stylish aluminium bezel.

Where space and style combine

The passenger compartment of the SEAT Ibiza IBZ Concept offers space and style in equal measure, with fine detailing and functional innovations throughout.

The interior is structured by ‘light guide’ strips that run through the dashboard and the doors, integrating the radio/iPhone interface screen and providing atmospheric lighting at the same time.

The light, airy tones of the cream coloured ‘Magnolia’ interior heighten the feeling of space inside this SEAT. The dashboard features the same colour, and a different texture is provided via the suede-clad soft pads. The instrument binnacle hood, door panels, pillars and ceiling are also finished in suede.

The newly-designed seats and integrated headrests are upholstered with a combination of leather and suede in the same colour as the dashboard, with blue stitching to match the body colour.

In trademark sporty SEAT style, the steering wheel on the IBZ Concept is slightly flattened at the base. It is wrapped in leather and suede and has a four-spoke structure with dipped side grips, the SEAT ‘S’ in the centre and the letters ‘IBZ’ on the lower spoke, and a set of newly designed multi-functional controls on either side.

Naturally, the sporty design of the instrument panel is faithful to the brand’s identity. The large dial on the left is the rev counter, with a screen taking up the rest of the space. On the right is an analogue and digital speed display, with the navigation information, trip computer and remaining vehicle controls shown in the middle.

There are four circular air vents on the dashboard encased in aluminium. A special interior design concept features a striking combination of aluminium layered with a glossy black material that make up a line with recessed lighting extending across the dashboard and continuing onto the door panels. The centre houses a screen displaying radio and iPhone functions, and the centre console has a purpose-built iPhone slot.

The centre console also features a stylish climate control system with all the usual functions; the gear stick with a leather gaiter and a panel with buttons to activate the hazard lights, door locks and seat heaters, as well as several storage compartments. Close by is an electronic hand-brake and the central armrest, which is cloth upholstered with a handy storage compartment that can also be removed from the vehicle.

The newly designed door panels on the IBZ Concept echo the style of the dashboard, with the soft pad in suede and an aluminium insert beneath the armrest. The aluminium door handles and speaker frames are also new – the latter with a unique arrangement of square slats.

Predictably perhaps, beneath the rear hatch of the new SEAT Ibiza IBZ Concept lies a spacious boot. Measuring an impressive 410 litres, it can be significantly extended when the rear seats are folded to leave a completely flat cargo space that stretches right to the back of the front seats.

The boot’s low load height makes it easy to access, allowing heavy or bulky items to be loaded more simply. It also provides several solutions for keeping objects securely in place such as side hooks or storage nets on either side of the wheel arches.

There’s also a supplementary storage compartment beneath the folding boot floor. A cover leads to the spare wheel and tool box.

The detailing in the boot once again shows SEAT’s quality workmanship in practice. The edges of the floor covering are finished with leather, and the soft pads on the side are in cream-coloured suede.

Third member of the Ibiza family

With the unveiling of the stylish Ibiza Concept IBZ at Frankfurt Motor Show, SEAT is offering a preview of the future family-sized version of its most popular model. The production version is expected to arrive in showrooms across Europe next year as the company continues its new product offensive which is making the Spanish brand’s range the youngest on the market.

In the year of the Ibiza’s 25th anniversary, the newest addition to the range underlines the car’s segment-leading quality, design and workmanship.

The chassis of the new IBZ Concept has the same compact dimensions as an Ibiza hatch, with a total length of 4.22 metres and the same height and width. However, access to the rear seats is improved still further via broader rear doors.

As with the rest of the SEAT range the sporty, design-driven youthful style of the new Ibiza IBZ Concept make it perfect for those who value space, practicality, comfort and driving enjoyment.

SEAT is preparing to unveil its most potent model to date with next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show debut of the awesome new Leon Cupra R.

The influential German show, opening to the public on 17 September, will see the official debut of the SEAT Leon fleet’s stunning new flagship which boasts a brutally powerful 265 PS 2.0 TSI turbocharged petrol engine.

Instantly becoming the most muscular production model ever to wear the trademark SEAT ‘S’, the forthcoming Leon Cupra R matches the power output of the title-winning
SEAT Leon TDI World Touring Car.

Naturally, the new Leon’s 265 PS direct injection 2.0 TSI engine is the star of the show boasting not only tremendous power, but also easy torque transmission and remarkable flexibility. Among the four cylinder 16V unit’s key features is a new, high-pressure fuel pump injector to satisfy its greater performance demands while also allowing it to fully comply with strict EU5 emissions standards.

Transmitting that urge to its driven front wheels, the Cupra R is capable of prodigious performance. The zero to 62 mph time, for instance, is a formidable 6.1 seconds, while the top speed of 155 mph is comfortably adequate. All this, and yet the new SEAT’s combined fuel consumption figure is put at just a shade under 35 mpg.

Inside and out, the exclusive nature of the Spanish maker’s new model is obvious to the enthusiast thanks to the distinctive letter ‘R’ on the central grille and at the lower right of the hatch. The all-important initial also appears inside, on the right instrument dial and the remote control key. Meanwhile, the exclusive Cupra logo graces the front bumper, the centre of the hatch and, inside, the steering wheel and seat backrests.

Further distinctive detailing which underlines the Cupra R’s extreme nature includes arch-filling 19-inch, five double-spoke alloys shod with ultra-low profile 235/35 tyres. The wheel assembly also enables a set of generous 17-inch 345 x 30 mm front disc brakes with 16-inch 286 x 12 mm at the rear, uprated to deliver the greater braking capacity obviously required to keep that 265 PS safely in check.

The interior features eye-catching competition-styled bucket seats in grey alcantara upholstery, white LED lighting on the instrument dials, a leather-clad multi-functional steering wheel and sporty aluminium-trimmed pedals.

In its home market, the latest Leon’s extensive line-up of standard equipment includes ABS + TCS, ESP + EBA, XDS (SEAT’s new electronic system which mimics the function of a limited slip differential), front and front side airbags, curtain airbags, passenger airbag disconnection, rear window seat Isofix anchoring points, low tyre pressure warning, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors, cruise control, trip computer, cornering fog lights, dual zone climate control and MP3-compatible eight-speaker CD/radio.
