The new Škoda Fabia Greenline II will become the most environmentally-friendly car ever to wear the famous Škoda badge which goes on sale on sale in the UK next week.

The second generation Greenline is powered by a new three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 TDI CR 75bhp DPF common rail (high-pressure direct injection) engine which returns an impressive 83.1 mpg (combined cycle) and produces exceptionally low CO₂ emissions of only 89g/km, which means the Fabia Greenline II is exempt from road tax.  

Priced at £13,740, the five door estate comes complete with £800 of extra standard equipment over the model which it replaces, including cruise control, ESP, stop-start function, tyre pressure monitor (TPM) and an alarm with tilt-sensor.

One of the biggest technological changes to boost fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions is the introduction of the stop-start system.  The system operates automatically, turning the engine off when the driver stops the vehicle, engages neutral and releases the clutch.  The engine restarts when the driver has engaged the clutch.  This system can improve fuel consumption by up to 4.2 mpg on a combined cycle or 7.7mpg in city traffic. On a single 45 litre tank of fuel, the Greenline II delivers and impressive range of 932 miles (combined cycle), meaning London to Prague is achievable without the need to refuel.

Other technologies introduced on the Greenline II which improve fuel economy are energy recuperation; which uses the vehicles kinetic energy for battery recharging, a gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine’s potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and low-rolling resistance tyre.

Fabia Greenline II will also be available in hatchback from October 2010.

The fantastic new Fabia vRS will be officially launched in the UK on Thursday 29 July 2010, and prices and specification have been confirmed.

The new vRS is the fastest production Fabia ever built, and builds on its predecessor’s reputation for high performance, low running costs and remarkable value for money.

Available as a hatch and estate, the vRS is powered by the fantastic 1.4 TSI 180bhp engine in tandem with a 7-speed DSG transmission, with ESP, HHC (Hill Hold Control) and XDS (Electronic Differential System). Customers can also choose an optional white or black roof with a range of body colours, including the new Rallye Green, inspired by the Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car.

Inside, the vRS boasts figure-hugging vRS sports seats, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with radio controls and paddles for changing gear and MDI (Multi-Device Interface) for use with iPods and other mp3 players.

Despite very difficult market conditions, Skoda Auto was one of the few car manufacturers to achieve record sales in 2009. Overall it supplied its customers with 684,226 cars, 1.4% more than in 2008.

Strong growth in the Chinese car market, where 122,556 cars were sold (up 106.7% year-on-year) was primarily behind the increase in deliveries. This was enhanced by a sales record on the German market, in which Skoda Auto, thanks to the government “scprappage program”, sold 162,328 cars ( +44.3%).

The best-selling models were the Octavia with 273,590 cars sold (+2.4%) and the Fabia with 264,173 units (+7.1%). The Superb posted the largest percentage increase in comparison with the previous year, with 44,548 cars sold, an increase of 73.7%. Sales of the first Skoda in the SUV segment – the Yeti – got off to a great start: from its introduction last September, until the end of the year a total of 11,018 Yetis were sold.

The financial results posted by the Skoda Auto group were significantly influenced by the continuing global economic and financial crisis and the resulting fall in total markets. The Group’s revenues reached CZK 187.9bn (around £6.6bn) and therefore fell by 6.2% in comparison with the previous year. The revenues were generated by cars (85.6%), original parts and accessories (8.1%), deliveries of parts to Volkswagen group companies (4.6%) and revenues on other goods and services (1.7%). The operating profit was CZK 5.9bn (-56.5%) and the profit before tax was CZK 4.7bn (-64.8%).

In terms of sales relevant to the operating profit (i.e. excluding deliveries to China), the figure fell in comparison with the previous year by 74,000 cars or 11.8%. The fall in the main financial indicators was, in addition to lower sales, also caused by a higher share of sales of small cars with lower margins, as well as measures implemented to support sales.

Despite the fall in results, the Group achieved an increase in operating cash flow of more than 100%. Net liquidity experienced a marked increase and, in comparison with 2008, rising by 52.4% to CZK 29.6 bn. Skoda’s investment totalled CZK 11.7 bn (-19.5%), most of which was centered on product investments (Skoda Yeti and Skoda Superb Combi).

Skoda Auto remains the most important exporter from the Czech Republic with approximately a 7% share in the country’s total exports.

“As expected, 2009 was even less favourable for Skoda Auto than the already problematic 2008,” said Holger Kintscher, the member of the Skoda Auto Board of Directors for Commercial Affairs.

“Unfavourable conditions in car markets, increased competitive and price pressure, particularly in Eastern Europe, and an overall decline in the markets relevant for us had a marked influence on the results. The CZK’s volatility was also a burden on us again.

“Thanks to thorough cost discipline and the “Scout” economy programme to improve the results, we remained markedly profitable. By achieving a high degree of liquidity, we managed to maintain our financial strength and stability.”

“Chairman of the Skoda Auto Board of Directors, Reinhard Jung, went on to say, “The Skoda brand managed to achieve a good result in the crisis year of 2009. Thanks to sales successes in Germany and China, we managed to achieve a further sales record.

“Skoda’s timely engagement in growth regions is now paying off. We further extended our foreign activities in 2009 by starting complete car production in Kaluga, Russia, and Pune, India. We strengthened our production programme even more in targeted fashion using the Skoda Yeti, Skoda Superb Combi and Skoda Octavia Greenline and LPG models.

“At the start of 2010 we comprehensively renewed our class of compact cars in the form of the Fabia and Roomster models. We were hereby responding to an increased demand for compact cars with low consumption. The Fabia RS, Fabia Combi RS and Fabia Scout models are new in the compact car programme. Skoda now has a very modern and attractive product range.  This entitles us to look to 2010 with optimism.”

Following on from their sparkling debut at the Geneva motor show, Skoda Auto has announced prices for its new, improved Fabia and Roomster models.

With fantastic new engines, a fresh face and a whole raft of technical refinements, both the Fabia supermini and Roomster MPV are even more attractive than ever. And being Skodas, both also represent great value for money, with the Fabia range starting at just £9,330 and the versatile Roomster from only £11,260 (all prices with 1st April Road Fund Licence inclusive).

The new look is most evident in the redesigned radiator grille and 3D-shaped headlamps, which have been considerably widened, highlighting the stronger horizontal line of the cars’ faces. This gives both Fabia and Roomster a more dynamic look, while losing none of the cars’ elegance and appeal.

Both cars also benefit from a new range of engines which includes four petrol and two diesel units, with power outputs ranging from 60bhp through to 105bhp. The vast majority of Skoda’s new engines benefit from direct fuel injection, while many feature turbocharging technology.

The result is a reduction of both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as improved performance and refinement. Nowhere is this more apparent than when the new 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised, two-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. This delivers impressive power with excellent combined fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg and a CO2 emissions reduction of 56g/km to 124g/km (against the previous 1.6 105bhp Tiptronic). The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine is available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp. Both of these will also be available with a five-speed manual transmission.

All engines comply with EU5 emissions standards, with both 1.6 CR TDI units emitting less than 110g/km CO2.

Both Fabia and Roomster are available in S, SE and Scout specifications, while the Fabia line up also features Elegance trim level.

Skoda Auto is presenting the new Fabia vRS hatch and estate at the Geneva Motor Show, where it will join the sports-tuned Octavia vRS. Both Fabia vRS versions are indeed impressive: for the first time ever, Skoda Auto is using a double-supercharged, four-cylinder petrol engine providing 180bhp, in an engine of just 1.4 litres.

A sophisticated compressor-and-turbo combination increases the engine power smoothly and harmonically, and the maximum speed of 140 mph (141 mph in the estate version) and 0-62mph acceleration in just 7.3 seconds in both versions mean a sporty driving experience. With fuel consumption of 44.1 mpg, the Fabia vRS offers high power and maximum fuel efficiency as well as excellent environmental parameters.

Both versions boast an attractively designed front bumper and integrated fog lamps with integrated LED lights that can be fitted with cornering lights as an option. The vehicle’s unique position in the Fabia range is underlined by 17″ lightweight alloy Gigaro wheels developed specially for the vRS, red brake callipers, tinted windows, a new rear bumper with a diffuser and dual exhaust. Depending on the colour of the body, the roof, roof spoiler and wheels for the Fabia vRS hatchback will be available in a choice of black, white or silver.

The vehicle’s sports-tuned chassis – with ESP, ABS and ASR – is designed for powerful dynamic and safe driving performance. To enhance the driving experience, the new XDS electronic differential improves the car’s cornering ability. It brakes the inside front wheel electronically to increase the torque on the outside front wheel. Accelerating through corners, the resulting torque gives the vRS impressive agility. A tyre pressure monitor (TMP) and uphill start assistant are standard, providing greater comfort and safety.

Both the Fabia vRS hatch and estate are fitted with height-adjustable sports seats with vRS logos on the backrests. A height- and reach-adjustable, three-spoke leather-wrapped sports steering wheel has paddles for manual control of the seven-speed DSG gearbox. The purity of the interior design is underlined by an Onyx-shaded dashboard and stainless steel pedals with an anti-slip surface.

In connection with the new design of the Fabia vRS, Skoda has also adapted the design of its rally car, the Fabia Super 2000. Under new FIA regulations for the Super 2000 category, the vehicle has been widened to 1,820 mm. To improve the performance of the Fabia Super 2000 rally car, Skoda has also adapted the engine’s air intake and exhaust system.

The new Skoda Superb Estate will become the most luxurious and most practical car ever to wear the famous Skoda badge when it goes on sale on 26 February.

With prices starting at just £17,715, the Super Estate offers the same great value for money as every Skoda. However, it’s not just the great value that sets it apart from its rivals. Its style, practicality and luxurious comfort have also won it critical acclaim.

Even before it hits UK showrooms, the Superb Estate has already won it fair share of admirers including the TopGear magazine team, who declared it their ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. It’s easy to see why.

Guy Wilks will swap the wintry north east of England for the hot and humid interior of Brazil, when the Škoda UK Motorsport driver contests Round 2 of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the Rally International de Curitiba (4-6 March), in his Fabia S2000.

In preparation for the dramatic change in temperature, Guy has added sauna and steam room work-outs to his gruelling fitness regime of daily runs across the County Durham countryside, and is in peak physical shape for the sauna-like in-car temperatures that he is expecting to face in Brazil.

The 29-year old driver from Darlington currently lies 6th in the IRC standings after a faultless performance on Rallye Monte Carlo (19-23 January). Another points-scoring result in Brazil is likely to see Guy move up the table, as only two of the drivers ahead of him in the series, fellow Škoda Fabia S2000 drivers Juho Hänninen and Jan Kopecký, are contesting the event.

A top eight finish won’t be easy, as the Rally International de Curitiba has attracted a strong 48 car entry, with drivers from Great Britain, Czech Republic, Finland, Portugal, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

Whilst this will be Guy’s first rally in Brazil, he and co-driver Phil Pugh (Tywyn) are no strangers to rallying overseas and against local experts, and have contested events as far afield as Argentina and Mexico. It will also be their first gravel rally since winning the RAC MSA Rally of Scotland three and a half months ago, although Guy did complete a very productive 112 mile (180 kms) test near Osilo, in the northern part of Sardinia (February 19-20), where he concentrated on getting the car set-up to exactly how he likes it. With temperatures topping just 14ºC on the Mediterranean island, the Škoda UK Motorsport team hopes that it will merely be a case of adjusting the settings for the anticipated 28ºC conditions when it runs the Fabia S2000 at the pre-rally shakedown in Brazil.

Based 255 miles (410 kms) south-west of Sao Paulo, the Rally International de Curitiba will be a difficult event, as the terrain is flat and very fast, with lots of high-speed crests and dust to contend with. Drivers who have contested the event before will be at a distinct advantage, yet Guy’s aim is to challenge for a top position and score as many IRC points as he can.

Guy Wilks: “We had a very good test in Sardinia.  We found a four kilometre section of gravel road that was flat and very fast – just what we expect to find in Brazil.  We were also lucky it stayed dry, and although it was a lot colder in Sardinia than it will be in Brazil, it was certainly the best conditions we could have hoped for in Europe at this time of year.

“Brazil will be a difficult rally, but I like the challenge of new events and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve trained hard and I’m in good physical shape, and I feel ready for the heat and humidity. If all goes to plan, we’ll just need to make a few minor adjustments to the set-up of the Škoda Fabia S2000 during the pre-event shakedown, and then we’ll be ready for what promises to be two days of very tough competition.

“The trip to South America isn’t just about the rally in Brazil, as twelve days after we’ll be starting Rally Argentina. The focus will be very much on returning to the UK with a good haul of points after two strong performances.”

The Rally International de Curitiba begins with a ceremonial start in the city centre on Thursday 4 March. The action begins the following day, with Leg 1 competition taking place over three separate fast and flowing gravel stages located to the west of Curitiba.  The longest of these, the 11.8 mile (19 km) opening Campo Magro stage, is repeated three times, and the day contains a total of seven stages equalling 64 miles (103 kms).

Leg 2 takes place on Saturday 6 March and is the longer of the two legs, as it contains 73.5 miles (118.3 kms) of competition. Five gravel stages (two of which are repeated) are planned in the countryside north east of Curitiba, beginning with the 17.4 mile (28 kms) Baocaiuva test, which is the longest stage of the rally. The climax to the event is the spectacular 2 mile (3.38 km) Super Prime Pinhais stage, which takes place on a purpose-built arena adjacent to the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba; the venue for the opening round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, which takes place the following day. 

The rally winner is expected to complete the 15th and final super-special stage at 16.00 local time (19.00 UK time) after two days and 137.5 miles (221.3kms) of competition.

Skoda will offer four petrol engines and two diesel units in the UK, with power ranging from 60bhp to 105bhp in the Fabia and from 70bhp to 105bhp in the Roomster.  All engines comply with the EU5 standard and deliver exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels.

But Skoda’s development efforts weren’t only aimed at improving efficiency – improved performance was also a key goal.  Nowhere is this more apparent than when the new 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised, two-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission.  This delivers impressive power with excellent combined fuel consumption of just 53.3 mpg.  The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine is available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp.  Both of these will also be available with a five-speed manual transmission.

Both diesel units are fitted with high-pressure Common Rail injection, with a pressure of up to 1,600 bar combined with fast-responding piezoelectric injectors that are able to perform as many as five injections within one beat, resulting in improved engine refinement. Both diesel engines feature particulate filters as standard and CO2 emissions are under 110g/km.

The multi-award winning Skoda Superb range is now even more desirable thanks to the addition of the new 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp DPF.

This new engine option joins the existing 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp and 2.0 TDI CR 170bhp DPF diesel engines in the Superb range.

On his first asphalt rally in a Fabia S2000, Škoda UK Motorsport driver Guy Wilks achieved the team’s goal by finishing in a strong points-scoring 6th position on the Rallye Monte Carlo. Having celebrated his 29th birthday during the event, the Darlington-driver scored three points to make an encouraging start to his 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Co-driven by Phil Pugh, Guy drove intelligently and faultlessly throughout the four day, 251 stage mile event. Consistency proved the key to success, as he set 13 top ten fastest stage times out of 15 and didn’t put a scratch on his Fabia S2000 – despite extremely challenging snow and ice covered mountain stages.

A stunning 2nd fastest time on the opening stage of Leg 3 (SS11) saw Guy move up two places to 5th. With just four stages north of Monaco remaining, it was going to be an exciting finale as just 49.9 seconds separated Guy (in a points-scoring position) and the 9th placed driver (outside the points).

Tyre choice would be critical, and whilst there was no snow on the twisty Alpes-Maritimes roads, freezing conditions meant sections of sheet ice, especially on the ascent to the Col de Turini, situated 1607 metres above Monaco.

Guy took winter tyres for the first loop of two stages, and whilst this was a good choice for the ice, he lost more time that he’d gained on the dry sections. Returning to the harbour in Monte Carlo, Guy was back in 7th, albeit just 1.9 seconds behind Jan Kopecký.

For the final loop, Guy took a combination of cut slick and intermediate tyres and maintained a fast and safe pace to complete a copybook performance and finish 6th, moving up one place after Sébastien Ogier retired.

Guy Wilks: “It’s been a fantastic rally – very difficult, but fantastic.  Škoda UK Motorsport is such a new team, and this is the first time I’ve rallied a Fabia S2000 on Tarmac. The car hasn’t missed a beat and if you consider that Rallye Monte Carlo is one of the most difficult events in the world, a points-scoring finish is a fantastic result. We’ve stuck to our plan of taking no risks and getting mileage in the car, and it has paid dividends.

“This is a very encouraging start to the IRC, and we’re looking forward to going to Brazil and Argentina for the next two gravel events.”

Škoda UK Motorsport driver Guy Wilks continued to place only safe bets on the opening round of the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, Rallye Monte Carlo, by making good tyre choices and driving without risk on the middle day of the event.  Whilst others gambled and lost, Guy drove his Fabia S2000 faultlessly to move from 10th to 7th by the end of the day.

Heavy overnight snow on the event’s most northerly stage (SS6) made tyre choice for Leg 2 all the more difficult, as the two other stages on the loop were mostly wet. Co-driven by Phil Pugh, Guy went out on snow tyres – and returned to Valence for the mid-day service halt (and the halfway point in the rally) having moved up to 8th position after an excellent run through SS7.

The three stages were repeated in the afternoon, and whilst conditions were generally drier, there were patches of snow, ice and mud to ensure snow tyres remained the safest option. After a good run, Guy finished the day in 7th, just 13.5 seconds behind Franz Wittmann.

Guy Wilks: “I’m pleased, because this was a typically tough Rallye Monte Carlo day and we’ve had a very solid performance, made no mistakes and moved up the leaderboard.

“Conditions have been very tricky.  Where Kris [Meeke] crashed this morning, our ice note crew said that it was a sheet of black ice, and to drive as slowly as I would in a supermarket car park.  They were right!

“We had a very good afternoon. However, 600 metres into the final stage, my headset flew out of its net and landed under the clutch pedal. It was a bit of a distraction and we lost about 15 seconds, but it’s a good day on the Rallye Monte Carlo if that’s been your only problem.”

The Škoda Octavia family hatchback and estate range is now even more attractive thanks to the addition of two new engines.  A new, downsized 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is now offered along with the very latest 1.6 TDI CR 105bhp diesel engine with DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The state-of-the-art 1.2 TSI 105bhp is now available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG gearboxes, in either hatchback or estate bodystyles and in S and SE trim levels.  This engine first saw service in the recently introduced Yeti crossover, where it instantly impressed with its punchy performance and frugality thanks to its combination of a small-capacity petrol engine with turbocharging and direct injection technology.

It’s a similar story in the Octavia, where the 1.2 TSI hatch combines low CO2 emissions of 134g/km* with a 0-62mph time of just 10.8** seconds; exceptional for its capacity of 1,197cc.  Fuel economy is similarly impressive, with a combined figure of 49.6mpg***.  This new engine is available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmissions.

Meanwhile the recently introduced, latest-generation 1.6 TDI CR 105bhp diesel is now also available with 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, combining smooth, effortless performance with CO2 emissions of just 123g/km.  The 1.6 TDI CR 105bhp DSG is available with the same bodystyle and trim combinations as the 1.2 TSI as well as in Elegance guise.

These new additions to the Octavia range continue to improve an already multi-award-winning formula of practicality, comfort, value for money and low running costs.

Škoda UK Motorsport stuck to its plan and made a solid start to its 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge campaign today, when its star driver Guy Wilks completed the opening day of the Rallye Monte Carlo in 10th position.

Freezing conditions, rain and low cloud made conditions extremely difficult as Guy, partnered by co-driver Phil Pugh, successfully completed his first day rallying a Fabia S2000 on asphalt. Having only previously attempted the Rallye Monte Carlo in smaller 1.6-litre, front-wheel drive machinery, Guy planned and executed a no-thrills start in the smart 2-litre, four-wheel drive, 265bhp Škoda.

With two stages successfully completed in the morning, Guy was 1minute 21seconds quicker over the same stages in the afternoon, despite losing 30 seconds with a spin on the final stage of the day.

Guy Wilks: “Conditions have been relatively stable today, but in the morning the set-up of the car was too firm and we struggled a little with confidence. It wasn’t a problem with the car, just how collectively we’d prepared the car for the conditions.

“For the afternoon we softened the car quite a bit, but were too cautious on tyre choice. We used snow tyres when wets would have been better, but despite this we had a good run through SS3. We put slicks on the front for SS4, but with snow tyres on the rear, the back of the car was loose and it was oversteeering quite a lot.  Unfortunately after 43kms driving like that we spun on a narrow section and lost about thirty seconds getting going again.

“This is the our first day rallying a Fabia S2000 on asphalt, so it’s been our dry asphalt test today – and we’ve done it in fog, snow and ice. We have to be patient regarding the stage times.  We’re not going to drive like the guys who are doing Rallye Monte Carlo as a one-off event and throwing caution to the wind – we have to think of the IRC and try to score some points. If we get our heads together and really sort out set-up and tyre choice then we can definitely go forward.”

Leg 2 begins tomorrow at 08.30 and contains three stages north-west of Valence in the morning and a repeat run in the afternoon. The total competitive distance is 90 miles (145kms), which makes it the longest day of the event.

Ten years after contesting his first rally, Guy Wilks will begin the most exciting challenge of his career, when he tackles the opening round of the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), Rallye Monte Carlo (January 19-23), in a Škoda UK Motorsport Fabia Super 2000.

Monaco and the famous Alpine special stages above it are a long way from Croft Circuit, near Darlington, and the Jack Frost Stages Rally that saw an 18-year old local make his rally debut. In the least powerful car in the field, Guy held an incredible 4th place in his small 68bhp hatchback, before the snow and ice melted and the more powerful cars pushed him outside the top ten by the finish.

How things have changed. Guy, a double British Rally Champion with vast international rally experience, will have around 200bhp more and one of rallying’s most modern and desirable cars in Monte Carlo, as he celebrates ten years in the sport.

This will be the fourth time Guy has contested Rallye Monte Carlo – each time with co-driver Phil Pugh reading the pace notes.  The three previous attempts at such a notorious specialised rally, plus an excellent pre-Christmas test in south-east France, have prepared Guy well and he hopes to celebrate his 29th birthday on the final day of the rally (Friday 22 January) by giving Škoda UK Motorsport a solid points-scoring start to the IRC.

Guy Wilks: ‘Rallye Monte Carlo is a very specialised event, and experience is a big help. The rally’s not only a great sporting challenge, it’s a big test of your mind. In the ever changing road conditions, tyre choice is often a compromise and you have to control your emotions when you’re on the wrong tyres and losing time. Only with experience can you be comfortable in that situation and be ready to regain the lost time, and more, on the next stage, when conditions favour your tyres.

‘We had a very good test in the Škoda Fabia before Christmas near Grenoble. Twenty-five per cent of the mountain pass we used was dry Tarmac, and the rest was covered in ice and snow, so we were able to test all variants of tyre, from full slicks to studs. We were able to see exactly how much time was lost and gained running different tyres on different surfaces, and that’s ideal preparation for Rallye Monte Carlo.

‘On every surface, the Fabia S2000 is fantastic.  The balance of the car is excellent and the engine is very strong; it’s almost just a case of getting the damper settings right, putting on the tyres and driving it as fast as we can! Juho Hänninen led Monte Carlo last year in a Škoda Fabia S2000, and that shows how competitive the car can be on the event.

‘I’m not thinking of victory in Monte Carlo, because with experience comes the knowledge that you don’t win a championship on the opening round. It’s more important get a good start to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and leave Monte Carlo with a secure haul of points. Winning Monte Carlo is a dream for any rally driver, but it’s not the overall aim in 2010 for myself and Skoda UK Motorsport – although a podium finish would be nice!’

The official start of the 78th Rallye Monte Carlo takes place at 17.00 (local time) on Tuesday 19 January in the Champ de Mars in Valence, situated 65 miles (105kms) south of Lyon.  From there, crews go directly to a 9km prologue stage, which will determine the starting order for the following day.

Leg 1 on Wednesday 21 January sees crews compete over the classic Burzet – Lachamp Raphael and St-Pierreville – Antraigues stages (both run twice) in the Ardeche, with stops to change tyres in Vals les Bains. Leg 2 on Thursday 21 January sees three more stages run twice, with service in Valence.

Leg 3 begins early on Friday 22 January with the Montauban Sur l’Ouvèze-Eygalayes stage. From there a 148 mile (239km) road section takes crews to Monte Carlo, for service and a short rest, before the final four stages of the event that evening – including two runs over the famous Col de Turini. 

After 15 special stages totalling 251.7 miles (405.1kms), Rallye Monte Carlo ends at 01.15 on Saturday 23 January, with the official prizegiving at 13.00 the same day.

Škoda UK Motorsport will enter a Fabia Super 2000 for Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil Pugh on the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC).

Guy, from Darlington in County Durham, is one of Britain’s most exciting rally talents, having won the British Rally Championship twice (2007 and ’08) and finished runner-up in the 2005 FIA Junior Rally Championship.  The 28-year old driver won the RAC MSA Rally of Scotland last November, driving a Škoda Fabia S2000 in competition for the first time.

Phil, from Tywyn in Gwynedd, enters his eighth consecutive season as Guy’s co-driver. The 39-year old Welshman was British Champion in 2007, and his experience and skill will be of significant importance in the rallies which lay ahead.

Škoda UK Motorsport will contest selected rounds of the IRC, beginning with the opening round of the series, Rallye Monte Carlo (January 19-23). It will also defend its Rally of Scotland title (October 14-16).

The exciting new Škoda UK Motorsport operation is an official satellite team, working independently – but closely – with Škoda Motorsport. The car’s colour scheme will combine Škoda’s iconic motorsport colours of green, white and red with a Union Jack to highlight the proud UK team effort. The car will be unveiled at Autosport International (NEC, 14-17 January).

In preparation for Rallye Monte Carlo, Guy tested a Škoda Fabia S2000 on asphalt mountain roads near Grenoble in south-east France just before Christmas, completing around 62 miles (100kms).

Prices for the award-winning new Škoda Superb Estate have been announced. Prices start at just £17,715 OTR for the Superb Estate S with the 1.4 TSI 125bhp engine. The Skoda Yeti has won the ‘2010 Czech Motoring Journalists Club (KMN) Car of the Year’ award. An independent jury made up of 37 selected KMN members announced the result of this year’s poll at yesterday’s gala award ceremony in Prague.

‘We are proud to be entitled to use the 2010 Czech Motoring Journalists Club (KMN) Car of the Year’ title, one of the reasons being that the new Yeti has become the first SUV in history to have won this prestigious award‘, says Jan Hurt, Head of Skoda Sales, Central Europe. ‘Achieving what no other SUV car has achieved so far shows that we are on the right tack with the Yeti. The first Czech-made SUV was launched in the Czech market this year in mid-July. Since then over 2,400 vehicles of this model have been sold in the Czech Republic alone (13,500 worldwide). Just after three months after the launch in the Czech market, the car became the best selling SUV here. Moreover, the 2010 KMN Car of the Year is not the only award the vehicle has won since its launch. The new Skoda Yeti has also scooped the Auto Bild Golden Steering Wheel award in Switzerland and Austria, the latest award so far is the Auto Trophy in Germany as the most popular imported vehicle‘, adds Hurt.

With 223 points in total, the Skoda Yeti comfortably beat the Opel Astra (164 points), Mercedes Benz E (143 points), BMW X1 (136 points) and Volkswagen Polo (134 points). The first round of the poll saw altogether 34 vehicles across a wide range of brands launched in the Czech market from 21 October, 2008 till 31 December, 2009.

Organised every year by the Motoring Journalists Club, the objective of the poll is to find the most significant new arrival in the Czech market. The appraisal criteria include e.g., overall design, safety, economy, driveability, on-the-road behaviour, compliance with environmental standards, price, etc. One of the criteria that makes it possible to compare vehicles of different classes is value for money.

Skoda is delighted to receive not one but two BBC Top Gear Magazine Awards – for the recently launched Yeti and the class-leading Superb.

Top Gear, one of the industry’s most recognised and respected publications, named the Yeti as its ‘Family Car of the Year’ while the Superb was voted ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. In its 10th year, the Top Gear Awards run across 24 international editions and recognise the most exciting and innovative cars launched in the last 12 months.

The winners were selected by Top Gear’s TV, online and magazine teams and Conor McNicholas, the magazine’s editor explained why the recently introduced Yeti crossover has won over the hearts of Top Gear:

‘The Yeti has been an instant hit with the Top Gear magazine office,’ he said. ‘We love the styling, the handling, the quality, the space, the clever touches and yes, the name. If you’re looking for a family car it should be top of your list to check out, simple as that. The Yeti feels like part of the Top Gear family.’

McNicholas also had high praise for the Superb, which fended off far more expensive opposition to scoop the title of ‘Luxury Car of the Year’:

‘It’s in the ride, the refinement, the quality of the interior, the understated drama of the exterior – the Superb is all that, and in estate form it makes even more sense.’ He concluded: ‘For the well-healed or those of us that wish we were, the Superb Estate is a class act that really delivers. Don’t let the great price fool you!’

The Superb Estate is expected to account for a third of all Superb sales when it goes on sale in the UK in February 2010, of which fleet sales are expected to make up approximately 75 per cent.

Starting at just £13,775, Yeti was launched in the UK in September 2009 and combines all the strengths of a traditional 4×4, such as a higher ride height, safety and security, with the practicality and running costs of a hatchback – a perfect crossover vehicle for the family driver.

Not to be outdone by the hatchback’s innovative Twin Door tailgate, the Superb Estate’s boot – the biggest in its class – has its fair share of neat touches too. All models are fitted with a pair of lights built into the tailgate to illuminate not only the load bay but also the area around the rear of the car. A third, LED light in the boot can be removed all together and used as a torch and, thanks to its magnetic body, mounted to the car’s body.
 
The tailgate itself has an optional power-operated function while the integrated luggage cover automatically retracts when the boot is opened. Customers can also specify the variable floor which extends over the rear bumper to help with awkward loads. Those who choose SE or Elegance will further benefit from a load partition and tethering system provided in the boot as standard. And if the Superb Estate’s cavernous load bay (633 litres with the rear seats in place, 1,865 litres seats down) still isn’t big enough, all models are fitted with roof rails as standard. (Black roof rails on S and chrome roof rails on SE and Elegance).

To make life even easier, an optional keyless entry and starting system (KESSY) is available for the first time on a Škoda, while passengers in all five of the Superb Estate’s spacious seats will enjoy the natural light offered by the new two-piece electric panoramic sunroof.

The Superb Estate will carry a premium over the hatchback of between £1,150 and £1,350 when it goes on sale in the UK in February. The estate is expected to account for a third of all Superb sales in 2010, of which fleet sales are expected to make up approximately 75 per cent.

The first Škoda Superb Estate rolled off the production line today (Monday 9th November 2009) in Kvasiny, Czech Republic – an Elegance 2.0 TDI CR 170bhp DSG DPF in Satin Grey.

The most luxurious estate car yet to wear the Škoda badge offers a class-leading load volume of up to 1,865 litres (633 litres with the rear seats up).  A choice of three petrol and three diesel engines will be available in the Superb Estate, plus manual and DSG transmissions – the same engine range as is available in the Superb hatch (launched September 2008). 

The Superb Estate is 4,838 mm long, 1,817 wide and 1,510 high – comfortably the most spacious and practical car in the upper-medium segment.  In keeping with Škoda’s tradition of offering great value for money, the estate has a number of new optional features, including a keyless entry and ignition system and a revised version of the hatchback’s award-winning Park Assist system that allows the estate to parallel park in an even tighter space than before.  An electronically operated boot opening and panoramic sunroof are also available.

Since its launch in 2008 the Superb hatch has found over 3,000 homes in the UK (up to October 2009).  Worldwide, Škoda has delivered 33,434 Superbs to customers from January through to October this year – 78% more than it had sold over the same period of the previous year.

Production started today with left-hand drive vehicles and right-hand drive production will follow in January 2010.

Taking place in the surroundings of Škoda’s headquarters at Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic, this year’s Bohemia Rally was badly affected by bad weather. Of the originally planned 12 special stages and 222 kilometres, the competitors only did five and 60 km, respectively.

With three special stage wins, the overall winners are Škoda Motorsport’s Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula. Their team-mates Jan Kopecký and Petr Starý won the two remaining stages and came second, 14.4 seconds behind the winning crew. To make the ‘podium sweep’ complete for the Škoda Fabia Super 2000, Norwegians Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Floen in a privately-owned Fabia run by the Italian team MRT, finished third.

Commenting on this year’s Bohemia Rally, Head of Škoda Motorsport Michal Hrabánek says: ‘It’s a pity that the rally had to be cut short due to bad weather. The organisers have indeed prepared an exciting and pretty challenging track. In any case, we appreciate any opportunity to appear before local rally fans and Škoda supporters, including our staff. I wish to thank both our crews and the entire team for preparing very well for this event and putting in a really professional performance throughout the rrally. It is absolutely fantastic to see three Škoda crews on the podium‘

Juho Hänninen: ‘Both Mikka and I looked forward to competing on snow, although this event is normally an asphalt one. We did not do much rallying in the end, but we understand that the stages were not at all in good condition. We are glad that we‘ve won here – I spend a lot of time in the Czech Republic these days, both for work reasons and for fun, and so this victory is quite special to me.‘

Jan Kopecký: ‘Bohemia is a great rally, and we looked forward to fighting for every second with Juho and other top competitors. What we did in the end was kind of a sprint, but it’s obvious that it was not possible to drive on snow-covered stages with trees fallen over them. Anyway, the organisers did a cracking job – we all know that it was not at all easy. I wish to congratulate Juho on winning today; he really deserves it!‘”

The Škoda Superb 3.6 V6 260bhp 4×4 DSG has won the All-Wheel Drive Vehicles Under 1800kg category in the 2010 Towcar of the Year awards. This is the second year running that the Superb has been honoured, with the 2.0 TDI proving itself a capable towcar by taking top prize in the 2009 contest.

The Superb 4×4’s impressive traction, handling and luxurious cabin were praised by the judges, who said: ‘The addition of all-wheel-drive makes the Superb an even more compelling towcar, with more traction and a significantly higher kerbweight extending the range of caravans it will comfortably tow.’

The Superb feels as solid as a rock, and it handles so well you can push it hard through twisty roads with real confidence. The Elegance version has a well turned out cabin and luxurious surroundings.’

Škoda UK Brand Director Robert Hazelwood said: ‘We are proud of Superb’s achievement in this rigorous competition and delighted that the new Superb has been recognised in these prestigious awards for a second year running. The Superb offers class-leading levels of space, comfort and equipment, and will be a popular towing vehicle in the towcar market.’

The competition took place over three intensive days of evaluation at the Millbrook Test Facility in Bedfordshire. Details of the Superb, along with all the entrants, will be distributed to the Caravan Club’s members in a special supplement.

The award was presented to Škoda UK at a presentation lunch held at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London today.

The new Škoda Yeti will go on sale on Thursday 17 September at Škoda retailers across the UK. Starting at just £13,725, Yeti is the newest addition to the growing range of Škoda vehicles.

Combining all the rugged strengths of a traditional 4×4 with the practicality and running costs of a hatchback, Yeti is a true crossover vehicle. It is available in front-wheel or four-wheel drive, in a choice of five diesel or petrol engines and four trim levels.

Equipment levels are high across the range with electric front windows and CD player, air conditioning, six airbags and Škoda’s hugely practical Varioflex seating standard on all models.

Yeti also features a number of exciting technologies designed to make life on board Yeti even more rewarding. These include park assist, an electrically opening panoramic sunroof, an off-road button and touch screen displays that incorporate Bluetooth, all available as options.

The four-wheel drive versions are underpinned by fourth-generation Haldex clutch that directs torque to the wheels that need it most, ensuring grip in even the poorest conditions.

Yeti received five stars in recent EuroNCAP testing, with its result hailed as one of the best vehicles tested so far. ‘Škoda has shown that it provides an equal degree of protection for passengers of all sizes, sitting in various positions (in all seats),’ says the Euro NCAP assessment report.

Škoda Finance is offering Yeti for monthly rates as low as £189 through Solutions, the personal contract plan from Skoda Finance.

All in all, Yeti is another great car from Škoda, the manufacturer of happy drivers.”

Škoda Auto will present several new products and innovations at the 63rd International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the key one being the new Superb Combi. Offering excellent comfort, generous space and distinctive design, this upper-medium segment vehicle incorporates Škoda’s typical front end design. A long wheel base and the roof line that forms a moderate arch give the vehicle well-balanced proportions, as well as an optimum combination of passenger and luggage compartment dimensions.

The new Superb Combi is 4,838 mm long, 1,817 mm wide and 1,510 mm high. Luggage compartment volume is 633 litres, rising to 1,865 litres with the rear seats folded down. For the first time ever in a Škoda car, the manufacturer offers an electrically controlled tailgate as an option. When open, the boot cover automatically moves to its middle position to open up more space for comfortable luggage handling. The vehicle’s low loading edge, and the floor platform that can be moved out over the rear bumper when the tailgate is open, make loading big objects a lot easier.

Also for the first time, this all-new Škoda will be available with the KESSY system for starting, unlocking and locking the vehicle without using a conventional key. Instead, an impulse transmitter communicates with the vehicle’s control unit and unlocks and locks the doors upon touching the door handle. The engine is started and switched off by pushing a button placed on the right side of the steering wheel column.

Reinhard Jung, Škoda Auto BOD Chairman, said ‘Superb Combi is yet another excellent vehicle by Škoda. Combi version of the Skoda Auto flagship illustrates ongoing development efforts of the company. With its specific design so typical of Škoda, outstanding spaciousnes and several Simply clever innovations it extends the tradition of Skoda Auto‘.

The engine portfolio of the Superb Combi is identical with that of the Superb, i.e. three petrol units (1.4 TSI 125bhp, 1.8 TSI 160bhp and 3.6 FSI V6 360bhp) and two diesel engines (2.0 TDI PD 103 kW and 2.0 TDI CR DPF 125 kW). All of these engines are based on direct fuel injection for low fuel consumption and emission values. The latest generation of the Haldex transmission will be featured in the all wheel drive versions of the vehicle.

Optionally, the Superb Combi will be available with an electrically controlled two-piece panoramic sunroof. When sunlight is too bright, it is possible to cover the glass roof with a sunblind. Another interesting innovation is a fin-shaped roof antenna – its slim shape makes the rear part of the roof line extremely elegant.

The company is also going to showcase the new Yeti, as it gradually goes on sale across Europe. Having achieved one of the best Euro NCAP results in history, this new SUV is a great success and the 9,000+ vehicles already ordered by customers show that Škoda Auto has set out in the right direction in this segment.

Škoda Auto’s motorshow presentation will also include the Octavia LPG, an environmentally-friendly and economical alternative to vehicles fitted with conventional petrol and diesel engines. This solution combines the benefits of a highly responsive petrol engine and an LPG unit to dramatically reduce fuel costs as well as CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, Škoda Auto is going to present three design packages for the Škoda Roomster, including design modifications and greater variability of the exterior design of the vehicle, such as differently coloured roofs (Candy White, Black Magic and Brilliant Silver), stickers identifying this design line and silver plastic elements.
