ŠKODA is revelling in a double dose of festive cheer after the Yeti was honoured by two respected specialist off-road magazines in their end-of-year awards.

They bring the versatile SUV’s trophy haul to six for the year, and with UK sales up a third on 2010 it caps a remarkable 12 months for the Yeti. Again it has proved its credentials as a genuine mud-plugger that’s more than capable of tackling all that winter can throw at it.

4×4 Magazine

The ŠKODA Yeti secured class honours in 4×4 Magazine’s ‘4×4 Of The Year’ test. Now in its 22nd year, expert judges got behind the wheel of all the contenders in four categories of off-roader. They ranked the Yeti as number one in the Mid-Range class.

Editor Nigel Fryatt said the Yeti fully deserved its trophy and hadsurprised many with its all-round abilities.

“When you consider ‘fit for purpose’ and ‘value for money’, the Yeti is an impressive machine. The version with the full off-road electronic terrain options is more than capable of coping with conditions way in excess of what is likely to be attempted by potential owners – surely the creed of the true off-roader.”

Total 4×4 Magazine

In 2010 the ŠKODA Yeti won the Crossover category and went on to take the overall ‘4×4 Of The Year’ title. Now it’s beaten all-comers in the same category again, and scooped the magazine’s Special Award for Best Value.

Editor Alan Kidd said the Yeti took the judging panel by surprise last year.

“This year we were ready for it – but it still took our breath away. It’s brilliantly conceived and superbly built, good to drive on the road and it’ll do remarkable things in the rough. What’s not to love? There are very few 4x4s, at any price, that I’d be happier to see on my driveway.”

With two weeks of trading left in 2011, sales of the ŠKODAYeti will hit close to 5,500 units. Following a total of 4,100 last year, this year has seen an increase of around 33 per cent.

Robert Hazelwood, ŠKODA brand director, said the Yeti had had an astonishing year by any standards. “These two awards from the specialist 4×4 press are the icing on the cake for 2011. Their experts have put the Yeti through rigorous off-road tests as well as more traditional ones and I’m thrilled they appreciate the car’s strengths. The Yeti is an astonishingly versatile vehicle and there’s plenty more to come from it in 2012.”

ŠKODA has released new images of its stunning VisionD concept. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011, the stylish design offers a clear indication of the future design direction for all future ŠKODA cars.

The model is inspired by classic form and design; the long wheelbase and short overhangs are a prerequisite for successful automotive architecture. Everyday utility and distinctive interior modular design are traditional ŠKODA brand values which have been freshly interpreted for a new audience. The car has a strong, sporty look which conveys a beautiful simplicity and a youthful and contemporary appearance.

The Volkswagen Group evening, held at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show, was the venue for the world premiere of ŠKODA’s design concept, MissionL.The close to production ready concept car offers a glimpse to the Czech carmaker’s new compact model which will be launched in Europe, Russia and China in 2012. Deliveries to customers in India will commence late 2011.

“This premiere kicks off ŠKODA’s model offensive for the coming years,” said ŠKODA Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “This new compact model, along with other new products to follow, will enable us to accomplish our goal of increasing global annual sales to 1.5 million vehicles by 2018. We are going to present a new car approximately every six months over the next few years.”

“We have taken a very pure approach to this design study – we have structured the surfaces simply, but impressively,” says ŠKODA Board of Directors Member for Technological Development Eckhard Scholzabout the philosophy of MissionL. “The car has a strong, sporty look which conveys a beautiful simplicity and a youthful and contemporary appearance. Many people look for clean, minimalistic lines, and the MissionL concept offers all that,” adds Eckhard Scholz.

The model offensive will support ŠKODA’s strong growth aspirations. Sales grew by 18.3 % to 583,600 vehicles over the first eight months of this year. January-August sales in China grew by 29.2% alone (148,862 vehicles). In Russia, sales for the first eight months of the year totalled 43,604 vehicles. During the same period India sold 18,980 vehicles, representing a growth of 50.4% when compared with the same period of last year.

“One year after the launch of out 2018 growth strategy, we can say we are on the right course,” said Vahland. “We have laid the foundations for ŠKODA’s product offensive at IAA. The extension of our product portfolio will help us increase the speed of our growth in the coming years.”

ŠKODA will present a world-premier design concept called MissionL at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.Close to the final production-ready design, this concept car reveals the look of ŠKODA’s upcoming model line that is to become symbolic of the Czech carmaker’s planned model offensive.

The new compact five-door vehicle will be launched in Europe, Russia and China. In line with the brand’s internationalisation principles, this compact ‘liftback’ will feature specific modifications in each of these regions. In addition, the Indian market will have its own version, a compact sedan. These steps are in line with the goals of ŠKODA’s 2018 growth strategy that was set last year in which the brand intends to increase its sales to 1.5 million vehicles by 2018.

“Revealing the look of our new compact model, the MissionL shows exactly the direction our brand is going to take,” says ŠKODA Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “The world premiere in Frankfurt gives a clear signal that ŠKODA is going full steam ahead now. We are going to present a new vehicle every six months over the next two or three years.”

In line with its 2018 growth strategy, the brand is gearing up, investing heavily in new models, markets and production capacities. Starting in mid 2013, the Yeti will be launched in the Chinese market and will be produced locally. Furthermore, ŠKODA, in cooperation with Shanghai Volkswagen, will produce a new compact model for this market from 2013, increasing the number of models produced in China to five.

ŠKODA’s Octavia vRS has become the latest member to join Bonneville’s legendary 200 mph club. The 500 bhp ‘salt spec’ challenger – built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic vRS performance flagship badge – pushed its way through the 200 mph barrier, four days ahead of schedule. In doing so the car, dubbed the ‘vRS Bonneville Special’, has become the fastest ŠKODA ever.

The Octavia vRS achieved an impressive 195.69 mph on its first run of the day. On the car’s sixth official outing at Bonneville Speed Week (13-20), the Octavia vRS propelled itself to an impressive 202.15 mph.

Ahead of the event at the world famous salt flats the brand’s UK technical team – who prepared the car in Milton Keynes – arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah to finalise months of hard work and preparation. In an environment where bhp is king and traction loss is your nemesis, the car underwent a rigorous dyno programme with the assistance of performance software and tuning outfit specialist REVO Technik.

Driven by journalist Richard Meaden, the Octavia had demonstrated its potential on Sunday (14 August) as it powered its way to 191 mph securing all four speed licenses required before heading to the magical 200 mph barrier.

Robert Hazelwood, Director for ŠKODA UK, said: “Months of rigorous planning, testing and preparation have all been worthwhile. At 13:24 on Monday 15th August, we took our Octavia vRS past the 200 mph barrier. The entire team has done an outstanding job. Our special thanks go to Richard on an incredible drive.

“This marks another exciting milestone in the brand’s motorsport achievements and is a great way to celebrate 10 years of the vRS range and commemorate 110 years of ŠKODA’s participation in motorsport.”

With four days remaining the team is now focusing their efforts on closing the gap on the 2.0-litre production car record which stands at 216 mph.

The Octavia vRS Bonneville Special

The car is a factory-fresh production Octavia vRS, with some changes made to improve aerodynamics and performance. That includes lowering the ride height to run almost 80mm closer to the ground and a new sub-frame which houses a race prepared intercooler.

It retains its production-standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine, with the standard turbo replaced with a large unit from respected component firm Garrett. Generating over 500 BHP, and producing 30+ PSI of boost pressure, the Bonneville Octavia vRS drinks high-octane race fuel (with water methanol mix)rather than unleaded petrol.

The unique racer has been built to stringent Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) safety regulations, which means a reinforced roll cage, parachute, fire extinguishers and window cage.

Since its launch in 2001, vRS has captured the hearts of UK motorists who enjoy the thrill of sports car driving. Since then, the UK has become ŠKODA’slargest market for the Octavia and Fabia vRS with more than 12,000 cars sold since launch.

ŠKODA is celebrating its most successful six months of trading following record sales and profit in the first six months of 2011. Sales revenue rose more than a quarter (+ 25.7%) to 5.4 billion EUR between January and June 2011. During the same period, operating profit increased 81.5% to 412 million EUR. The number of vehicles delivered to customers year-to-date has continued to increase, reaching 454,698, a year-on-year increase of 20.1% (up from 378,747 units).“In the first six months of this year, ŠKODA experienced rapid growth in all areas,” says the Chairman of the Board of ŠKODA, Prof. Dr. H.C. Winfried Vahland. “The team is successfully delivering the growth strategy which we launched last year. We will continue to build on our success in the second half of 2011 and in subsequent years, with the clear goal of increasing worldwide sales to at least 1.5 million units a year by 2018.” In order to deliver this growth, ŠKODA will expand its presence in international markets as well as building on the current model range. “We will begin to broaden our product offering with the launch of the ŠKODA Citycar later this year,” said Dr. Vahland.

The ŠKODA board member for Commercial Affairs, Winfried Krause, commented: “In the first half of 2011, ŠKODA continued to strengthen its financial position and build market share globally. This is a direct result of a significant increase in sales and an improved model range. ŠKODA has built a solid financial foundation for ambitious growth planned in the coming years.”

Overall sales revenue for the Czech manufacturer rose 25.7% to 5.4 billion EUR (up from 4.3 billion EUR in 2010). Operating profit was up 81.5% when compared with the same period last year, reaching 412 million EUR (227 million EUR recorded in 2010).

Profit before income tax amounted to 388 million EUR, an increase of 81.3% year-on-year. Net liquidity was also up, as ŠKODA reported 2.0 billion EUR in the first six months of the year (previously 1.6 billion EUR recorded on December 31st, 2010).

ŠKODA continues to invest in its future, having already injected 118 million EUR into growth plans in 2011. The funds were used to develop new models as well as for the expansion of production capacities at the Czech plants.

This year’s GTI-Treffen in Reifnitz, by Lake Wörthersee, is set to attract tuning fans from all over Europe for the thirtieth time at the beginning of June, and Škoda will once again be in the thick of the action, showcasing the Fabia vRS 2000 design concept prepared especially for this anniversary meeting, the rally Fabia Super 2000, the sporty Fabia vRS and the all-action Fabia Monte Carlo. Besides the latest innovations in its sports models, Škoda will be offering a packed programme of entertainment.

“These days, the GTI-Treffen is rightly hailed by fans of powerful engines and sporty customisation as the Mecca of car tuning,” says Škoda CEO Prof. Dr Winfried Vahland.“Anyone who comes to the event once never wants to miss another year of this fascinating get-together. The jubilee year of 2011 is a welcome opportunity for us to show off our sports models and make sure that everyone knows that Škoda really has something to offer here.”

The Fabia vRS 2000 concept car has been developed and builtspecifically for the GTI-Treffen. Drawing on the successful Fabia Super 2000 rally car, Škoda’s designers have created an original roadster pursuing a single goal: dynamism and the joy of sporty driving. Based on the Škoda Motorsport’s broad rally car, the Fabia vRS 2000 offers plenty of room for four occupants to climb in and sit in the car with ease. Besides the great view, the sharply sloping windscreen provides a constant supply of fresh air and a sense of being at one with nature.

Motorsports fans can look forward to the Fabia Super 2000, which was unbeatable last season as it dominated the IRC world championship series (Intercontinental Rally Challenge).
Exactly 85 years ago today, the first Škoda to wear the famous winged arrow logo rolled off the assembly line in Mladá Boleslav and was delivered to the president of Czechoslovakia, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. During the three years of production (until 1929), only 100 units of the luxury sedan were built.

The industrial manufacturer from Pilsen had already bought the license to produce the luxurious vehicles from the Spanish company Hispano-Suiza in 1924 – one year prior to the merger with the automobile factory of Laurin & Klement.

Production of the vehicle commenced in the spring of 1925 and wasn’t completed until May of 1926. The design had been penned by the leading coachbuilders at the time, Messrs. Brožík & Jech, and later by Messrs. Laurin & Klement.

Every single Škoda Hispano Suiza 25/100 PS was custom-built to individual customer requirements, meaning no two cars were the same. Weighing 2,700 kilograms, the car was able to reach a top speed of 86 mph.

Prices started at £6,785 and were considerably higher than the prices of other vehicles available on the market. Depending on the equipment level, prices rose to £8,928. In comparison, the smaller Škoda 422 at the time cost £1,360, and the beautiful Škoda 860 £4,200.

The accompanying Škoda marketing literature at the time read: “The Škoda Hispano Suiza is a luxury car designed by a brilliant engineer who put his stamp on the smallest details and manufactured with the utmost care and with finest materials.”

Established in 1895 as Laurin & Klement, Škoda started life as a bicycle manufacturer. In 1905, the company launched its first car, the Voiturette A.

The Red Bull Škoda team will make its debut next weekend (5-6th March) at the Mexico Rally, the first round of the 2011 S-WRC series. Last year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) champions, Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula, will be competing in a Škoda Fabia S2000.

The Mexico Rally is considered as one of the most exciting and challenging events of the entire S-WRC series. The gravel event around Leon poses a real test of endurance for both the cars and the drivers due to the stages taking place at high altitudes and at high temperatures. The majority of the rally will take place in Sierra de Lobos and Sierra de Guanajuato, both of which offer stunning mountain backdrops and fast stretches in open valleys. The highly competitive field of drivers will have to cope with a total of 22 stages (365 km) and more than a thousand kilometres of transfers between stages.
Juho Hänninen underlines the importance of the team’s appearance in the S-WRC series: “Our appearance in S-WRC is a big challenge for the whole team. We have high ambitions, as we want to be among the leaders of the field, and so the start of the season is extremely important. The competition is going to be strong, but we have prepared well. This rally will show where we stand in comparison with the other teams.” Head of the team Raimund Baumschlager adds: “The Mexico Rally is not going to be an easy ride, but we are prepared for that. We have top-class resources, state-of-the-art technology and – thanks to the massive support we are getting from the Škoda Motorsport (factory team) – we also have Juho Hänninen, one of the best current drivers on gravel. I believe that our position in the final rankings will be high“.
Hänninen and Markkula’s Red Bull Škoda team colleagues, Hermann Gassner jr. and co-driver Katharina Wüstenhagen, are set to make their debut at the following S-WRC event in Jordan. Hermann Gassner jr.: “We are going to do some more testing to make good use of the time remaining until the Jordan Rally – after all, the car is new to me. The appearance in S-WRC is a big step forward, it is the first time that we will be part of an international series. The goal is to gain as much experience as possible and gradually climb up to the top of the field“. The current plans are for the Red Bull Škoda team to participate in events at Sardinia, Greece, Finland, Germany, France and Spain.

Skoda’s Fabia line is about to be extended with the introduction of the Monte Carlo, a new model with enhanced sports styling and bespoke interior. Launched to celebrate 100 years of the Monte Carlo Rally, and commemorate the 110 year anniversary of the brand’s motorsport efforts, this special edition model is a nod towards Skoda’s sporting pedigree.

From the outside, the Fabia Monte Carlo boasts a dynamic look, underlined by the introduction of piano-black body trim, which extend over the wheel arches and down the full length of the car, a black roof, black door mirror covers, a black radiator grille top, smoked headlamps and black 17″ lightweight Trinity alloy wheels.

Inside the Fabia Monte Carlo, customers can choose between all black or, red and black sports seats which boast additional side support. Both versions come with black roof lining, a perforated leather steering wheel with red stitching, leather handbrake and gearstick gaiter with red stitching (with the red-black interior option). To complete the enhanced sporty appeal silver kick plates and steel pedals are fitted as standard.

The new Fabia Monte Carlo is set to make its first public appearance at Rallye Monte Carlo (19-22 January), where Skoda’s current all-conquering IRC championship winning rally car, the Fabia S2000, finished fourth (in class) on its first outing at this legendary rally in 2009. In 2010, Skoda Motorsport finished second, third and fifth (in class) with Hanninen, Vouilloz and Kopecky, respectively.

Available as hatchback only, the car’s trim is based on the current Fabia SE version, and the new Monte Carlo will be available with a wide range of engines.

The Škoda Yeti has picked up three awards from Total Off Road magazine’s 4×4 of the Year awards, beating all other off-roaders to scoop the top gong ‘4×4 of the Year’.

“The Yeti is much more than just a great value 4×4. Its practicality is top-notch, it’s well made and well equipped and it’s easy and fun to drive,” said the magazine’s Editor, Alan Kidd. “Combine all that with what it can do off-road and you’ve got a capable, affordable adventure wagon with all the right kit and an off-the-scale fun factor. The Yeti is the ultimate family car – that’s why it’s Total Off Road’s 4×4 of the Year.”

On its way to overall victory, the Yeti also won the Crossover class, thanks to its mix of great, hatchback-like on-road dynamics and MPV versatility:

“Neither a fully fledged off-roader nor a fully fledged MPV, the Yeti blends elements of both into what might be the most imaginative crossover vehicle yet,” said the Total Off Road team.

Since its launch in late 2009, Yeti has been well received by UK press and industry opinion formers alike. Earlier this year Yeti was awarded Car of the Year and Best Crossover Car in the 2010 Auto Express Awards, and was also voted Top Gear magazine’s Family Car of the Year.

The latest accolades mean Škoda UK has been presented with no less than 23 major awards this year, with the Octavia, Yeti, Superb and Superb Estate racking up a raft of product awards across a wide range of publications and organisations.

Škoda also recently came top in the Auto Express Driver Power Survey, while the brand was yet again ranked in the top 10 manufactures of the J D Power Customer Satisfaction Survey for the 17th consecutive year.

This success is reflected by record sales, with 41,000 cars sold in the UK this year, increasing overall market share to over 2%.

This fantastic achievement by Škoda is underlined by the ‘runner-up’ position for Škoda Motorsports drivers Jan Kopecký & Petr Starý. Kris Meek (Peugeot), the winner of the series last year, finished third. Michal Hrabánek, Head of Škoda Motorsport, received the Manufacturers’ trophy on behalf of the brand.

Škoda’s factory team took part in 11 of this year’s 12 IRC events and celebrated victory at seven of them. Besides these wins, Škoda crews achieved a further 17 podium positions. Hänninen & Markkula won in Argentina, Sardinia and Scotland; Loix & Miclott in Belgium, Madeira and the Czech Republic; and Kopecký & Starý in the Canary Islands. Importer teams supported by Škoda did very well, too, such as Škoda UK Motorsport Driver, Guy Wilks, who had podium finishes in Brazil, Argentina and Canary Islands. The success of the Fabia Super 2000 in the 2010 season was crowned by a number of triumphs in national championships, including Germany (Matthias Kahle), Austria (Raimund Baumschlager), the Czech Republic (Pavel Valoušek), Spain (Alberto Hevia), Lebanon (Roger Feghali) and Slovakia (Jozef Béreš).

Summarising the season that ended at the Cyprus rally last weekend (6-7 November), Michal Hrabánek, Head of Škoda Motorsport, said, “I wish to thank everyone who has contributed to this historic achievement by Škoda and helped us to win the IRC championship – the management of Škoda, the members of the Škoda Motorsport team, our colleagues at the Technological Development Department, as well as subcontractors and colleagues outside the company. I also want to thank our Škoda importers in all the countries where the Fabia Super 2000 project was well received and contributed significantly to our joint achievements in terms of increasing awareness and enhancing the image of the Škoda brand – it has indeed been a great promotion for Škoda!”

Juho Hänninen: “The quality of this year’s IRC was really high. This is my first big international title and I am very proud of it. The whole team put in a great performance – we had no technical issues throughout the season, which is an important precondition for success, because to achieve a good result you first have to finish in the respective events. I have made considerable progress on asphalt tracks, and I am already looking forward to further cooperation with Škoda Motorsport.”

Jan Kopecký: “I’d like to thank Škoda for the opportunity to be part of the Fabia Super 2000 project – all of the team members have been working hard, which has lead to this fantastic achievement for the brand. Although we didn’t take the top spot in the drivers’ standings, finishing second is a great achievement. We are really looking forward to next year.”

The advanced four-wheel drive system is designed to tackle those challenging conditions that would leave two-wheel drive competitors stranded. Power distribution is controlled electronically by a fourth-generation Haldex clutch. Under normal traction conditions, 96% of the total power is directed to the front axle. In adverse weather conditions – similar to those experienced in the UK last winter – the Haldex system reacts in a split second to redirect power to those wheels with better traction, greatly increasing driving safety.

The 4×4′s capabilities aren’t limited to wintery conditions. In summer months the 4×4 technology will ensure that towing caravans and trailers is easier and safer, and because drive to the rear wheels is disengaged when not required, there’s little adverse effect on fuel consumption.

The introduction of an automatic twin-clutch DSG gearbox to the existing 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp engine adds to Skoda’s broad range of four-wheel drive cars which now includes Octavia Estate, Octavia Scout, Yeti, Superb hatch, and Superb Estate.

Available to order in the UK from November 2010, with prices starting at £21,705.

This is the Superb’s sixth award win in 2010 and the second consecutive time it has received the ‘Private Hire Car of the Year’ title. The judges cited the estate’s impressive leg room, outstanding luggage space and luxurious finish as the deciding factors.

Mark Bursa, Editor of Professional Driver magazine, said: “The impact of the second-generation Škoda Superb on the private hire market cannot be underestimated. It’s a genuine game-changer. In fact, rear legroom is so impressive that most judges gave it 10 out of 10 for this feature alone.

“Last year, the Superb hatch walked away with the class – and this year the estate repeated the trick. Most judges felt the estate version has made an excellent car even better.”

The award win further reinforces Škoda’s position as a brand leader, as the Superb Estate fought off stiff competition in the category, against eight other manufacturers.

A total of 33 cars were entered for the Professional Driver magazine Car of the Year Awards, which were adjudicated by more than 30 judges from the chauffeuring and private hire sector and the motoring media.

The Superb Estate is available from £17,720. For more information visit www.skoda.co.uk

The second generation Greenline is powered by a new three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 TDI CR 75bhp DPF common rail (high-pressure direct injection) engine which returns an impressive 83.1 mpg (combined cycle) and produces exceptionally low CO2 emissions of only 89g/km, which means the Fabia Greenline II is exempt from road tax.

Priced at £13,740, the five door estate comes complete with £800 of extra standard equipment over the model which it replaces, including cruise control, ESP, stop-start function, tyre pressure monitor (TPM) and an alarm with tilt-sensor.

One of the biggest technological changes to boost fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions is the introduction of the stop-start system. The system operates automatically, turning the engine off when the driver stops the vehicle, engages neutral and releases the clutch. The engine restarts when the driver has engaged the clutch. This system can improve fuel consumption by up to 4.2 mpg on a combined cycle or 7.7mpg in city traffic. On a single 45 litre tank of fuel, the Greenline II delivers and impressive range of 932 miles (combined cycle), meaning London to Prague is achievable without the need to refuel.

Other technologies introduced on the Greenline II which improve fuel economy are energy recuperation; which uses the vehicles kinetic energy for battery recharging, a gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine’s potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and low-rolling resistance tyre.

Fabia Greenline II will also be available in hatchback from October 2010.

The new vRS is the fastest production Fabia ever built, and builds on its predecessor’s reputation for high performance, low running costs and remarkable value for money.

Available as a hatch and estate, the vRS is powered by the fantastic 1.4 TSI 180bhp engine in tandem with a 7-speed DSG transmission, with ESP, HHC (Hill Hold Control) and XDS (Electronic Differential System). Acceleration from 0-62mph takes just 7.3 secs, with a top speed of 139mph (140mph for the estate).

The new vRS features stylish 17-inch ‘Gigaro’ alloy wheels, LED daylight running lights, sunset glass and vRS body kit giving it a very sporty appearance. Customers can also choose an optional white or black roof with a range of body colours, including the new Rallye Green, inspired by the Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car.

Inside, the vRS boasts figure-hugging vRS sports seats, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with radio controls and paddles for changing gear and MDI (Multi-Device Interface) for use with iPods and other mp3 players.

Overall, the vRS offers fantastic value for money, particularly when compared to the competition. Where else can you find a 180bhp engine with DSG, paddles, LED lights and loads of standard kit for £15,700 for the hatch and £16,495 for the estate version?

Following the launch of the face-lifted Fabia and Roomster, Škoda Auto has unveiled the Fabia Estate GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II – the first of its second generation of environmentally-friendly GreenLine models.

The new model Fabia and Roomster have been facelifted and fitted with new technology designed to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The most important innovations include a new engine (1.2 TDI CR /75bhp DPF) with common rail (high-pressure direct injection), stop-start technology, energy recuperation and gear recommendation (on a Maxi DOT display).

One of the biggest technological changes in the second-generation GreenLine version is a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW) with a consumption of just 83.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 89g/km for the Fabia Estate GreenLine II, and 67.3mpg and 109g/km for the Roomster GreenLine II.

As well as CO2 emissions, other contaminant levels have also been reduced. The new engine complies with the EU 5 emission standard that, for diesel engines, has stricter regulations for nitrogen oxides and solid particles. The gear ratios of the car’s five-speed transmission are identical to those of the ordinary Fabia and Roomster models fitted with the same engine. As a result, the GreenLine II offers the same responsiveness yet lower consumption.

The key benefits of the stop-start system stand out in busy city traffic. The system operates automatically, directly after the engine starts. If, after some time, the driver stops the vehicle, engages neutral and releases the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. As soon as the driver presses the clutch, the engine starts again immediately. Stop-start makes it possible to save up to 4.2mpg (combined) or up to 7.7mpg in city traffic.

Energy recuperation is another state-of-the-art technology introduced on the new Fabia Estate GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II. Effective utilisation of the vehicle’s kinetic energy for battery recharging is a simple system that helps to save fuel continuously. The two systems – stop-start and braking energy recovery, work in partnership and, along with other measures, help to make the operation of these new models as environmentally-friendly as possible. The application of the energy recovery system has helped to reduce the CO2 emissions by 2-4 g/km.

Other technologies Škoda is introducing on the GreenLine II models to improve economy are the gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine’s potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and, last but not least, low-rolling-resistance tyres.

The new model Fabia and Roomster’s have been facelifted and fitted with new technology designed to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels. The most important innovations include a new engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/75bhp DPF) with Common Rail (high-pressure direct injection), start-stop technology, energy recuperation and gear recommendation (on a Maxi DOT display).

One of the biggest technological changes in the second-generation GreenLine version is a new three-cylinder supercharged engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW) with a consumption of just 83.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 89 g/km for the Fabia Estate GreenLine II, and 67.3 and 109 g/km for the Roomster GreenLine II.

In addition to lower CO2 emissions, other contaminant levels have also been reduced. The new engine complies with the EU 5 emission standard that, for diesel engines, has stricter regulations for nitrogen oxides and solid particles. The gear ratios of the car’s five-speed transmission are identical to those of the ordinary Fabia and Roomster models fitted with the same engine. As a result, the GreenLine II offers the same responsiveness yet with lower consumption.

The key benefits of the stop-start system stand out in busy city traffic. The system operates automatically, directly after the engine starts. If, after some time, the driver stops the vehicle, engages neutral and releases the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. As soon as the driver presses the clutch, the engine starts again immediately. stop-start makes it is possible to save up to 4.2mpg (combined) or up to 7.7 mpg in city traffic.

Energy recuperation is another state-of-the-art technology introduced on the new Fabia Estate i GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II. Effective utilisation of the vehicle’s kinetic energy for battery recharging is a simple system that helps to save fuel continuously. The two systems – Start-Stop and Braking energy recovery work in partnership and, along with other measures, help to make the operation of these new models as environmentally-friendly as possible. The application of the energy recovery system has helped to reduce the CO2 emissions by 2 – 4 g/km.

Other technologies Škoda is introducing on the Greenline II models to improve economy are the gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine’s potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and, last but not least, low rolling resistance tyres.

Overall it supplied its customers with 684,226 cars, 1.4% more than in 2008.

Strong growth in the Chinese car market, where 122,556 cars were sold (up 106.7% year-on-year) was primarily behind the increase in deliveries. This was enhanced by a sales record on the German market, in which Skoda Auto, thanks to the government “scprappage program”, sold 162,328 cars ( +44.3%).

The best-selling models were the Octavia with 273,590 cars sold (+2.4%) and the Fabia with 264,173 units (+7.1%). The Superb posted the largest percentage increase in comparison with the previous year, with 44,548 cars sold, an increase of 73.7%. Sales of the first Skoda in the SUV segment – the Yeti – got off to a great start: from its introduction last September, until the end of the year a total of 11,018 Yetis were sold.

The financial results posted by the Skoda Auto group were significantly influenced by the continuing global economic and financial crisis and the resulting fall in total markets. The Group’s revenues reached CZK 187.9bn (around £6.6bn) and therefore fell by 6.2% in comparison with the previous year. The revenues were generated by cars (85.6%), original parts and accessories (8.1%), deliveries of parts to Volkswagen group companies (4.6%) and revenues on other goods and services (1.7%). The operating profit was CZK 5.9bn (-56.5%) and the profit before tax was CZK 4.7bn (-64.8%).

In terms of sales relevant to the operating profit (i.e. excluding deliveries to China), the figure fell in comparison with the previous year by 74,000 cars or 11.8%. The fall in the main financial indicators was, in addition to lower sales, also caused by a higher share of sales of small cars with lower margins, as well as measures implemented to support sales.

Despite the fall in results, the Group achieved an increase in operating cash flow of more than 100%. Net liquidity experienced a marked increase and, in comparison with 2008, rising by 52.4% to CZK 29.6 bn. Skoda’s investment totalled CZK 11.7 bn (-19.5%), most of which was centered on product investments (Skoda Yeti and Skoda Superb Combi).

Skoda Auto remains the most important exporter from the Czech Republic with approximately a 7% share in the country’s total exports.

“As expected, 2009 was even less favourable for Skoda Auto than the already problematic 2008,” said Holger Kintscher, the member of the Skoda Auto Board of Directors for Commercial Affairs.

“Unfavourable conditions in car markets, increased competitive and price pressure, particularly in Eastern Europe, and an overall decline in the markets relevant for us had a marked influence on the results. The CZK’s volatility was also a burden on us again.

“Thanks to thorough cost discipline and the “Scout” economy programme to improve the results, we remained markedly profitable. By achieving a high degree of liquidity, we managed to maintain our financial strength and stability.”

“Chairman of the Skoda Auto Board of Directors, Reinhard Jung, went on to say, “The Skoda brand managed to achieve a good result in the crisis year of 2009. Thanks to sales successes in Germany and China, we managed to achieve a further sales record.

“Skoda’s timely engagement in growth regions is now paying off. We further extended our foreign activities in 2009 by starting complete car production in Kaluga, Russia, and Pune, India. We strengthened our production programme even more in targeted fashion using the Skoda Yeti, Skoda Superb Combi and Skoda Octavia Greenline and LPG models.

“At the start of 2010 we comprehensively renewed our class of compact cars in the form of the Fabia and Roomster models. We were hereby responding to an increased demand for compact cars with low consumption. The Fabia RS, Fabia Combi RS and Fabia Scout models are new in the compact car programme. Skoda now has a very modern and attractive product range. This entitles us to look to 2010 with optimism.”

Following on from their sparkling debut at the Geneva motor show, Skoda Auto has announced prices for its new, improved Fabia and Roomster models.

With fantastic new engines, a fresh face and a whole raft of technical refinements, both the Fabia supermini and Roomster MPV are even more attractive than ever. And being Skodas, both also represent great value for money, with the Fabia range starting at just £9,330 and the versatile Roomster from only £11,260 (all prices with 1st April Road Fund Licence inclusive).

The new look is most evident in the redesigned radiator grille and 3D-shaped headlamps, which have been considerably widened, highlighting the stronger horizontal line of the cars’ faces. This gives both Fabia and Roomster a more dynamic look, while losing none of the cars’ elegance and appeal.

Both cars also benefit from a new range of engines which includes four petrol and two diesel units, with power outputs ranging from 60bhp through to 105bhp. The vast majority of Skoda’s new engines benefit from direct fuel injection, while many feature turbocharging technology.

The result is a reduction of both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as improved performance and refinement. Nowhere is this more apparent than when the new 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised, two-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. This delivers impressive power with excellent combined fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg and a CO2 emissions reduction of 56g/km to 124g/km (against the previous 1.6 105bhp Tiptronic). The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine is available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp. Both of these will also be available with a five-speed manual transmission.

All engines comply with EU5 emissions standards, with both 1.6 CR TDI units emitting less than 110g/km CO2.

Both Fabia and Roomster are available in S, SE and Scout specifications, while the Fabia line up also features Elegance trim level.

Fabia hatchback prices – all prices shown with 1st April Road Fund Licence inclusive.

Skoda Auto is presenting the new Fabia vRS hatch and estate at the Geneva Motor Show, where it will join the sports-tuned Octavia vRS. Both Fabia vRS versions are indeed impressive: for the first time ever, Skoda Auto is using a double-supercharged, four-cylinder petrol engine providing 180bhp, in an engine of just 1.4 litres.

A sophisticated compressor-and-turbo combination increases the engine power smoothly and harmonically, and the maximum speed of 140 mph (141 mph in the estate version) and 0-62mph acceleration in just 7.3 seconds in both versions mean a sporty driving experience. With fuel consumption of 44.1 mpg, the Fabia vRS offers high power and maximum fuel efficiency as well as excellent environmental parameters.

Both versions boast an attractively designed front bumper and integrated fog lamps with integrated LED lights that can be fitted with cornering lights as an option. The vehicle’s unique position in the Fabia range is underlined by 17″ lightweight alloy Gigaro wheels developed specially for the vRS, red brake callipers, tinted windows, a new rear bumper with a diffuser and dual exhaust. Depending on the colour of the body, the roof, roof spoiler and wheels for the Fabia vRS hatchback will be available in a choice of black, white or silver.

The vehicle’s sports-tuned chassis – with ESP, ABS and ASR – is designed for powerful dynamic and safe driving performance. To enhance the driving experience, the new XDS electronic differential improves the car’s cornering ability. It brakes the inside front wheel electronically to increase the torque on the outside front wheel. Accelerating through corners, the resulting torque gives the vRS impressive agility. A tyre pressure monitor (TMP) and uphill start assistant are standard, providing greater comfort and safety.

Both the Fabia vRS hatch and estate are fitted with height-adjustable sports seats with vRS logos on the backrests. A height- and reach-adjustable, three-spoke leather-wrapped sports steering wheel has paddles for manual control of the seven-speed DSG gearbox. The purity of the interior design is underlined by an Onyx-shaded dashboard and stainless steel pedals with an anti-slip surface.

In connection with the new design of the Fabia vRS, Skoda has also adapted the design of its rally car, the Fabia Super 2000. Under new FIA regulations for the Super 2000 category, the vehicle has been widened to 1,820 mm. To improve the performance of the Fabia Super 2000 rally car, Skoda has also adapted the engine’s air intake and exhaust system.

The new Skoda Superb Estate will become the most luxurious and most practical car ever to wear the famous Skoda badge when it goes on sale on 26 February.

With prices starting at just £17,715, the Super Estate offers the same great value for money as every Skoda. However, it’s not just the great value that sets it apart from its rivals. Its style, practicality and luxurious comfort have also won it critical acclaim.

Even before it hits UK showrooms, the Superb Estate has already won it fair share of admirers including the TopGear magazine team, who declared it their ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. It’s easy to see why.

From its bold, chrome-framed grille and distinctive headlights to its subtly curved, coupe-like roofline, the Superb Estate’s design balances road presence with elegance. But style doesn’t come at the expense of substance: the Superb Estate boasts the biggest load capacity in its class.

The combination of the impressive boot capacity – 633 litres with the rear seats in place and a massive 1,865 litre with them folded – and the Superb’s legendary rear legroom makes the Estate one of the most practical cars on the market. And if the Superb Estate’s cavernous load bay still isn’t big enough, all models are fitted with roof rails as standard.

Trim levels and engine choices will mirror those of the Superb hatchback with S, SE and Elegance models available along with the same range of three petrol and three diesel engines. All engines, from 1.4 TSI to 3.6 V6 are equipped with direct fuel injection for optimum fuel efficiency, performance and low emissions. With a choice of manual or twin-clutch DSG gearboxes linked to either front- or four-wheel drive, there’s a Superb Estate to suit everyone’s needs.

The estate is expected to account for a third of all Superb sales in 2010 (a total of 3,400, split 2,300/1,100 hatch/estate). Fleet sales are expected to account for 75 per cent of total sales.

Guy Wilks will swap the wintry north east of England for the hot and humid interior of Brazil, when the Škoda UK Motorsport driver contests Round 2 of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the Rally International de Curitiba (4-6 March), in his Fabia S2000.

In preparation for the dramatic change in temperature, Guy has added sauna and steam room work-outs to his gruelling fitness regime of daily runs across the County Durham countryside, and is in peak physical shape for the sauna-like in-car temperatures that he is expecting to face in Brazil.

The 29-year old driver from Darlington currently lies 6th in the IRC standings after a faultless performance on Rallye Monte Carlo (19-23 January). Another points-scoring result in Brazil is likely to see Guy move up the table, as only two of the drivers ahead of him in the series, fellow Škoda Fabia S2000 drivers Juho Hänninen and Jan Kopecký, are contesting the event.

A top eight finish won’t be easy, as the Rally International de Curitiba has attracted a strong 48 car entry, with drivers from Great Britain, Czech Republic, Finland, Portugal, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

Whilst this will be Guy’s first rally in Brazil, he and co-driver Phil Pugh (Tywyn) are no strangers to rallying overseas and against local experts, and have contested events as far afield as Argentina and Mexico. It will also be their first gravel rally since winning the RAC MSA Rally of Scotland three and a half months ago, although Guy did complete a very productive 112 mile (180 kms) test near Osilo, in the northern part of Sardinia (February 19-20), where he concentrated on getting the car set-up to exactly how he likes it. With temperatures topping just 14ºC on the Mediterranean island, the Škoda UK Motorsport team hopes that it will merely be a case of adjusting the settings for the anticipated 28ºC conditions when it runs the Fabia S2000 at the pre-rally shakedown in Brazil.

Based 255 miles (410 kms) south-west of Sao Paulo, the Rally International de Curitiba will be a difficult event, as the terrain is flat and very fast, with lots of high-speed crests and dust to contend with. Drivers who have contested the event before will be at a distinct advantage, yet Guy’s aim is to challenge for a top position and score as many IRC points as he can.

Guy Wilks: “We had a very good test in Sardinia. We found a four kilometre section of gravel road that was flat and very fast – just what we expect to find in Brazil. We were also lucky it stayed dry, and although it was a lot colder in Sardinia than it will be in Brazil, it was certainly the best conditions we could have hoped for in Europe at this time of year.

“Brazil will be a difficult rally, but I like the challenge of new events and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve trained hard and I’m in good physical shape, and I feel ready for the heat and humidity. If all goes to plan, we’ll just need to make a few minor adjustments to the set-up of the Škoda Fabia S2000 during the pre-event shakedown, and then we’ll be ready for what promises to be two days of very tough competition.

“The trip to South America isn’t just about the rally in Brazil, as twelve days after we’ll be starting Rally Argentina. The focus will be very much on returning to the UK with a good haul of points after two strong performances.”

The Rally International de Curitiba begins with a ceremonial start in the city centre on Thursday 4 March. The action begins the following day, with Leg 1 competition taking place over three separate fast and flowing gravel stages located to the west of Curitiba. The longest of these, the 11.8 mile (19 km) opening Campo Magro stage, is repeated three times, and the day contains a total of seven stages equalling 64 miles (103 kms).

Leg 2 takes place on Saturday 6 March and is the longer of the two legs, as it contains 73.5 miles (118.3 kms) of competition. Five gravel stages (two of which are repeated) are planned in the countryside north east of Curitiba, beginning with the 17.4 mile (28 kms) Baocaiuva test, which is the longest stage of the rally. The climax to the event is the spectacular 2 mile (3.38 km) Super Prime Pinhais stage, which takes place on a purpose-built arena adjacent to the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba; the venue for the opening round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, which takes place the following day.

The rally winner is expected to complete the 15th and final super-special stage at 16.00 local time (19.00 UK time) after two days and 137.5 miles (221.3kms) of competition.

Eurosport will broadcast recorded highlights from each day of the Rally International de Curitiba, beginning on Friday 5 March. Eurosport and Eurosport 2 will then broadcast a Magazine programme, featuring the event (Monday 8 – Wednesday 10 March). Please check TV listings for details.

Skoda Auto is unveiling the new-look Fabia and Roomster at this year’s Geneva Motorshow. Škoda’s compact cars have been given an exciting exterior redesign, plus a fresh range of engines, packed with new technology.

The new design accentuates the cars’ width, with a totally redesigned face that gives both cars a more dynamic look, increasing their road presence.

Scout models have also been redesigned, with a new Fabia hatch version making its debut in Geneva.

Both vehicles now look more confident, mature and expressive.

The Fabia, Fabia Estate and Roomster also receive a number of technological improvements including state-of-the-art engines. This new engine portfolio is at the very core of the changes, with the entire front structure being redesigned to accommodate them.

Skoda will offer four petrol engines and two diesel units in the UK, with power ranging from 60bhp to 105bhp in the Fabia and from 70bhp to 105bhp in the Roomster. All engines comply with the EU5 standard and deliver exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels.

But Skoda’s development efforts weren’t only aimed at improving efficiency – improved performance was also a key goal. Nowhere is this more apparent than when the new 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised, two-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. This delivers impressive power with excellent combined fuel consumption of just 53.3 mpg. The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine is available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp. Both of these will also be available with a five-speed manual transmission.

Both diesel units are fitted with high-pressure Common Rail injection, with a pressure of up to 1,600 bar combined with fast-responding piezoelectric injectors that are able to perform as many as five injections within one beat, resulting in improved engine refinement. Both diesel engines feature particulate filters as standard and CO2 emissions are under 110g/km.

The Fabia engine line-up consists of:

1.2 6V 60 bhp
1.2 12V 70 bhp
1.2 TSI 85 bhp
1.2 TSI 105bhp (manual and DSG)
1.6 TDI CR DPF 90 bhp
1.6 TDI CR DPF 105 bhp
The Roomster is available with the following engines:

1.2 12V 70 bhp
1.2 TSI 85 bhp
1.2 TSI 105bhp (manual and DSG)
1.6 TDI CR DPF 90 bhp
1.6 TDI CR DPF 105 bhp

By incorporating the very latest Common Rail diesel technology, this new model is even more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly than the 2.0 TDI PD 140bhp it replaces. Combined fuel consumption has improved by 4.4mpg and is now an outstanding 52.3mpg, while CO2 emissions have been reduced by 12g/km to just 143g/km.* The standard diesel particulate filter (DPF) also ensures compliance with the latest EU5 emissions regulations.

The use of a single, high-pressure fuel rail and a lower compression ratio has the added benefit of making the Superb even more refined than ever.

All of these improvements have been made without affecting the Superb’s strong performance or its price, which starts from £18,205. The new 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp DPF engine is available from 18th February with a choice of six-speed manual or twin-clutch DSG transmissions, in hatchback or estate bodystyles and in S, SE or Elegance trim.

This new engine option joins the existing 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp and 2.0 TDI CR 170bhp DPF diesel engines in the Superb range.

On his first asphalt rally in a Fabia S2000, Škoda UK Motorsport driver Guy Wilks achieved the team’s goal by finishing in a strong points-scoring 6th position on the Rallye Monte Carlo. Having celebrated his 29th birthday during the event, the Darlington-driver scored three points to make an encouraging start to his 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Co-driven by Phil Pugh, Guy drove intelligently and faultlessly throughout the four day, 251 stage mile event. Consistency proved the key to success, as he set 13 top ten fastest stage times out of 15 and didn’t put a scratch on his Fabia S2000 – despite extremely challenging snow and ice covered mountain stages.

A stunning 2nd fastest time on the opening stage of Leg 3 (SS11) saw Guy move up two places to 5th. With just four stages north of Monaco remaining, it was going to be an exciting finale as just 49.9 seconds separated Guy (in a points-scoring position) and the 9th placed driver (outside the points).

Tyre choice would be critical, and whilst there was no snow on the twisty Alpes-Maritimes roads, freezing conditions meant sections of sheet ice, especially on the ascent to the Col de Turini, situated 1607 metres above Monaco.

Guy took winter tyres for the first loop of two stages, and whilst this was a good choice for the ice, he lost more time that he’d gained on the dry sections. Returning to the harbour in Monte Carlo, Guy was back in 7th, albeit just 1.9 seconds behind Jan Kopecký.

For the final loop, Guy took a combination of cut slick and intermediate tyres and maintained a fast and safe pace to complete a copybook performance and finish 6th, moving up one place after Sébastien Ogier retired.

Guy Wilks: “It’s been a fantastic rally – very difficult, but fantastic. Škoda UK Motorsport is such a new team, and this is the first time I’ve rallied a Fabia S2000 on Tarmac. The car hasn’t missed a beat and if you consider that Rallye Monte Carlo is one of the most difficult events in the world, a points-scoring finish is a fantastic result. We’ve stuck to our plan of taking no risks and getting mileage in the car, and it has paid dividends.

“This is a very encouraging start to the IRC, and we’re looking forward to going to Brazil and Argentina for the next two gravel events.”

Heavy overnight snow on the event’s most northerly stage (SS6) made tyre choice for Leg 2 all the more difficult, as the two other stages on the loop were mostly wet. Co-driven by Phil Pugh, Guy went out on snow tyres – and returned to Valence for the mid-day service halt (and the halfway point in the rally) having moved up to 8th position after an excellent run through SS7.
The three stages were repeated in the afternoon, and whilst conditions were generally drier, there were patches of snow, ice and mud to ensure snow tyres remained the safest option. After a good run, Guy finished the day in 7th, just 13.5 seconds behind Franz Wittmann.

Guy Wilks: “I’m pleased, because this was a typically tough Rallye Monte Carlo day and we’ve had a very solid performance, made no mistakes and moved up the leaderboard.

“Conditions have been very tricky. Where Kris [Meeke] crashed this morning, our ice note crew said that it was a sheet of black ice, and to drive as slowly as I would in a supermarket car park. They were right!

“We had a very good afternoon. However, 600 metres into the final stage, my headset flew out of its net and landed under the clutch pedal. It was a bit of a distraction and we lost about 15 seconds, but it’s a good day on the Rallye Monte Carlo if that’s been your only problem.”

The state-of-the-art 1.2 TSI 105bhp is now available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG gearboxes, in either hatchback or estate bodystyles and in S and SE trim levels. This engine first saw service in the recently introduced Yeti crossover, where it instantly impressed with its punchy performance and frugality thanks to its combination of a small-capacity petrol engine with turbocharging and direct injection technology.

It’s a similar story in the Octavia, where the 1.2 TSI hatch combines low CO2 emissions of 134g/km* with a 0-62mph time of just 10.8** seconds; exceptional for its capacity of 1,197cc. Fuel economy is similarly impressive, with a combined figure of 49.6mpg***. This new engine is available with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmissions.

Meanwhile the recently introduced, latest-generation 1.6 TDI CR 105bhp diesel is now also available with 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, combining smooth, effortless performance with CO2 emissions of just 123g/km. The 1.6 TDI CR 105bhp DSG is available with the same bodystyle and trim combinations as the 1.2 TSI as well as in Elegance guise.

These new additions to the Octavia range continue to improve an already multi-award-winning formula of practicality, comfort, value for money and low running costs.
