Positioned as the ultimate Toyota Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser V8 has never wanted for much in terms of quality, performance, luxury and unmissable road presence. That formidable combination notwithstanding, the newly unveiled 2012 model goes even further in terms of sharper design inside and out, more creature comforts and advanced handling technologies for exceptional off-road capabilities.

Making its debut this week at the Brussels motor show, the 2012 Land Cruiser V8 will go on sale in the UK in March. More details of the UK range will be announced nearer the time of launch.

Exterior design

It is at the front of the vehicle that the external styling changes on the 2012 Land Cruiser V8 are most evident, led by a new over-size bumper with integrated fog lights and a new grille that pairs chrome and silver-finished vertical bars across its width. In spite of the bumper’s large dimensions, the sharply trimmed lower section ensures the extent of the front overhang does not compromise the approach angle when driving off-road.

The headlamp units have been reconfigured, incorporating LED daytime running lights and cylindrical high and low beam High Intensity Discharge bi-xenon headlights. The turn indicators extend outwards, increasing their visibility to the side.

In profile, the foreshortening effect of the lower sections of new front and rear bumpers is clear to see, while the vehicle’s built-in toughness is reflected in thick new side protection mouldings with chrome detailing. The door mirrors have been revised, too, now incorporating LED turn indicators and side view cameras linked to the new Multi-Terrain Monitor (see below). New-design 20-inch alloy wheels are also introduced for 2012.

At the rear the combination light clusters have been redesigned with a new double-cylinder form that echoes the look of the new headlamp units. The turn indicators are more prominent and the reversing lights are relocated to be on a level with the licence plate trim.

As with the daytime running lights and door mirror turn indicators, power-saving LEDs are used for the rear lights, which have the added benefit of lighting up more quickly than conventional filament bulbs.

Interior design

Changes made to the Land Cruiser V8′s cabin focus on raising the level of perceived quality in the look and feel of the interior, improving the quality and comfort and designing, in better ergonomics and functionality for the controls and switchgear.

A new, lighter interior colour scheme will be available, matched with high-gloss wood grain trim elements and bright silver-finish details.

Extensive changes have been made to the dashboard layout, including the introduction of a new audio panel, a piano black paint finish for some elements with bright silver-finish trim and chrome-plated details on the switchgear and air vents.

The driver’s instrument binnacle has white Optitron dials that are backlit with blue illumination and a large, colour TFT multi-information display.

The front seats, upholstered in perforated leather, gain a cool air function in addition to built-in heaters, plus a position memory setting. Active headrests are also introduced to help prevent whiplash injury in a rear-end collision.

In the rear the 40:20:40 seats have a new manual sliding mechanism allowing each section to be moved through a 90mm range. The outer seat headrests have been made larger for extra support and comfort, and the centre seat can be folded forward to create an armrest.

Uprated 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel engine

Detailed revisions to the 4,461cc V8 turbodiesel engine have ensured emissions comply with Euro 5 standards. These include the introduction of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and new G3 piezo injectors in the common rail injection system. Injection pressure of 200mPa delivers better throttle response as well as reducing emissions.

The engine produces 286bhp (200kW) at 3,600rpm and maximum torque of 650Nm between 1,600 and 2,800rpm.

The addition of the DPF allows for the main exhaust silencer be reduced in size and weight, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise and vibration. Noise and vibration levels have also been reduced in a series of detailed engine adjustments and the strategic use of insulation material between the injector system and head cover.

Stronger off-road capabilities

The ability to tackle the toughest off-road conditions has been fundamental to all Land Cruiser models and with the 2012 Land Cruiser V8 Toyota has harnessed advanced technologies to extend the vehicle’s capabilities even further.

The raft of new handling features includes the world-first Turn Assist, which works in conjunction with Land Cruiser V8′s Crawl Control function, plus Multi-terrain Select (MTS), Multi-terrain Monitor and Tyre Angle Display.

Crawl Control with world-first Turn Assist

Crawl Control can be used when the vehicle transmission is in L4 and speed is below 15mph (25km/h) – on its own or in conjunction with the MTS. It helps the driver to make a slow, controlled descent or climb on steep slopes, or help free the vehicle should it become stranded.

The system has been developed so that it now offers a choice of five vehicle speed settings. An independent, switchable Turn Assist function has been added to Crawl Control, which can help drivers execute very tight turns without having to reverse mid-bend. Operating at speeds below 6mph (10km/h), it reacts to the driver’s steering inputs, braking the rear wheel on the same side of the vehicle as the direction of turn. The wheel braking force automatically increases with the steering angle, reducing the vehicle’s turning radius.

Multi-terrain Select

The Multi-terrain Select (MTS) automatically modifies the throttle, braking and traction control to suit off-road conditions and deliver the best possible traction and vehicle control.

MTS offers a choice of five terrain modes: Mud and Sand; Loose Rock; Mogul; Rock; and Dirt and Rock. The new Multi-terrain Monitor automatically displays a view of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings on the multi-information screen.

In any of the five modes, the centre and rear differentials can be locked to gain maximum traction.

Multi-terrain Monitor

The Multi-terrain Monitor works in conjunction with the MTS, displaying images from four external cameras on the multi-information screen. It gives a comprehensive view of the area immediately around the vehicle when driving off-road (forward or reverse), helping the driver spot and avoid hazards that might otherwise be obscured.

The cameras are positioned front and rear and on the left and right door mirrors. The display can be adjusted to show single or combined front and/or side views. When the shift lever is moved to reverse, the display automatically switches to the rear view.

The front camera uses a wide angle lens to show the widest possible forward view, bringing blind spots such as the area immediately in front of the bonnet into sight.

The monitor also shows additional front and side view information, including the view range of the cameras and the location of obstacles detected by the clearance sonar.

The display also shows the front and rear tyre contact points; guidelines indicating the predicted path of the front tyres; and parallel vehicle width and length lines to help the driver judge distances and avoid obstacles.

Tyre Angle Display

The 2012 Land Cruiser V8 is equipped with a new Tyre Angle Display, which complements the predicted tyre path guidelines presented on the Multi-terrain Monitor. The system can be launched via the multi-information switch when MTS is activated. Guidelines linked to the steering angle are projected in real time on the display; moving through seven steps, they show the driver changes in steering angle between zero and 45 degrees.

Variable Flow Control power steering

The highly durable hydraulic power steering gains a new Variable Flow Control, which provides direct response and feel when travelling at cruising speed, and easy operation when manoeuvring at parking speeds.

A unique, dedicated off-road setting delivers a constant level of steering assistance, helping the driver accurately assess the level of tyre grip in all conditions.

Toyota Touch Pro

Land Cruiser V8 will adopt Toyota Touch Pro, the most sophisticated version of Toyota’s new multimedia and navigation system.

Toyota Touch Pro uses a high-resolution, eight-inch touch screen interface with a home screen display showing the most relevant navigation, audio and air conditioning information.

With a choice of 20 menu and guidance languages, it provides pan-European navigation, plus a range of advanced features including automatic map zoom at intersections, 3D city modelling and landmark graphics, and an on-line points of interest search function.

Using a compatible mobile phone and the on-board Bluetooth, Toyota Touch Pro enables connection to Google Local Search, the world’s largest and most up-to-date search database.

Using Google Maps, route destinations can be input remotely from home or office. Points of interest can also be downloaded for entry as destination.

The system incorporates a double tuner DAB/DAB+/DMB digital radio, making it compatible with the advanced TPEG (Transport Protocol Expert Group) traffic information system, which has a much greater information capacity than the TMC-RDS analogue system.

Toyota Touch Pro can also read DVD audio and video files.

The pin-point accuracy of the system enables better routing and can supplement a basic traffic event and flow service with information about parking availability and fuel prices in the surrounding area, together with details of speed limits and weather forecasts.

Using voice recognition, Toyota Touch Pro allows the driver to use a single command to input a full destination, make a phone call, or pick a specific track from a connected digital music player.

It also provides access to text messages and emails and includes a ‘text-to-speech’ message read-out facility.

The package is completed by a rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines for easier, safer manoeuvres in confined spaces.

Toyota Touch Pro can be combined with a 14-speaker JBL premium sound system with GreenEdge energy efficiency technology that reduces power usage by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional audio units.

New premium specifications

The Land Cruiser V8′s higher quality feel is supported by a higher level of premium equipment features and options.

UK specifications are still to be announced, but the list of items newly available for the model include a heated steering wheel, front seats with cooling and heating functions, a cooled box in the centre console, a powered upper tailgate section, bi-xenon headlamps and a 200V power outlet in the luggage compartment.

There’s no question about Aygo’s success as one of the best value, fun-to-drive cars on the market, but the time has come for some strategic changes that strengthen both its performance and its owner-appeal.

In the first significant revisions since Aygo broke on to the scene in 2005, Toyota’s urban star gains a new front-end design, new interior trims and new equipment features. And to ensure it remains one of the cheapest new cars to run, its multi-award-winning engine has been tweaked to bring CO2 emissions below the 100g/km mark and to push combined cycle fuel economy above
65mpg.

The new Aygo will be revealed at the Brussels motor show on 10 January and will go on sale in the UK in March. Specifications, prices and further details of the UK model range will be announced nearer the on-sale date.

Design
Aygo has a fresh new look with a front-end treatment that follows Toyota’s new design language.
Echoing some of the features that characterise new Yaris, there is a greater emphasis on the lower section of the car, to express a more planted, purposeful stance. This can be seen in the wider front bumper, with integrated foglights at each corner and a large trapezoidal air intake. Optional LED daytime running lights set into the lower edge of the grille add further emphasis to the look.

The upper front grille has been rendered more slender, while the new bonnet design contributes more to Aygo’s overall road presence. The re-style has added just 15mm to Aygo’s length; other dimensions – including the tight 4.73m turning circle – are unchanged, making the car as well-suited to life around town as ever.

The design changes are not just about looking good: the new bumper is more aerodynamically efficient while the larger intake improves engine cooling performance.

Extra street style comes courtesy of dark-tinted rear privacy glass for both three and five-door versions, new 14-inch wheelcap designs and a range of seven exterior paint choices, including a vibrant new metallic orange.

In the cabin the look and feel of the fixtures and fittings has been improved. This higher perceived quality can be witnessed in a new dark grey finish for the upper and lower dashboard sections, giving the cabin a more integrated appearance.

A new-design steering wheel comes with a leather trim, plus paddle controls on the steering column for models using Toyota’s Multimode automated manual transmission.

Adding an extra flash of style, the ring surrounds of the speedometer, tachometer and air vents are finished in grey, orange or black, with the front door speaker surrounds coloured silver or orange.

Two audio systems are offered – a 35W AM/FM/CD package with two or four speakers, or a new unit that comes with Bluetooth, a multi-language display and a USB port for connecting portable music players such as iPods.

The attention to detail goes as far as changing the opening angle of the rear parcel shelf to give easier access to the loadspace.

Engine
Aygo’s Toyota-designed and manufactured three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine is renowned for its spirited performance and superb efficiency, reflected in multiple International Engine of the Year Awards over the past few years. Detailed changes have achieved even greater efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and increasing fuel economy, without compromising its appealing character.

The all-aluminium unit, which is one of the lightest on the market, tipping the scales at just 67kg, has a revised combustion chamber design that increases combustion efficiency and raises the compression ratio from 10.5 to 11.0:1. It also gains harder-wearing iridium-tipped spark plugs. Top line performance figures of 67bhp (50kW) at 6,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 3,600rpm are unchanged. But with five-speed manual transmission CO2 emissions fall from 105 to a road tax-busting 99g/km* and combined cycle fuel consumption improves from 61.3 to 65.7mpg*. For versions fitted with Multimode, emissions are down from 106 to 104g/km* and fuel economy rises from 61.4 to 63.8mpg*.

Saving money in tax and at the pumps will be backed up by Aygo’s established low insurance costs; the current model occupies the lowest possible UK insurance groups, between 1E and 3E according to version.

Toyota has also taken measures to make life on board quieter and more comfortable. Extra insulation has been added under the bonnet and adjustments made to the clutch system to reduce noise and vibration, and damping performance of the front and rear shock absorbers has been tweaked for a smoother ride.

The Toyota Hilux has received another accolade, taking top honours in the pick-up category of the Total 4×4 awards.

Renowned for its rugged go-anywhere performance, Hilux was the first car to be driven to both the South and Magnetic North Poles and has been tested in the world’s most extreme environments.

Famed for its ultra-tough quality, Hilux is much more than just a workhorse. Today’s sixth generation of Toyota’s pick-up combines traditional robustness and excellent load-carrying capacity with comfort, safety and equipment features to make it a vehicle that ably bridges the divide between work and everyday driving needs.

Alan Kidd, Editor of Total 4×4 magazine said, “Hilux has always stood out in what is a very fiercely fought category. It’s incredibly capable in every area and comes at a very appealing price.

“The updates Toyota has made to it are subtle, but they’re enough to nudge it back in front of the pack. In particular, its interior is much more modern and, without sacrificing anything in the way of refinement, the vehicle is tougher than ever. There’s a lot of talent in the pick-up market, but once again Hilux is the one to beat.”

The latest version of Hilux is available in three bodystyles, single, extra and double cab, with a choice of 2.5 or 3.0-litre D-4D turbodiesel engines.

New Avensis delivers improvements in dynamics, comfort and ownership costs

2.0 D-4D engine revised for greater efficiency, with CO2 emissions reduced to 119g/km and fuel economy improved to 61.4mpg

17 per cent Benefit-in-Kind company car tax rating

Changes to suspension and steering produce more responsive handling and a more comfortable ride

Total cost of ownership reduced by £2,000 for 2.0 D-4D model over three years/60,000 miles

Stronger proposition for business customers, offering better value than key market competitors

New Avensis on sale now

The new British-built Avensis makes its entrance not only sporting some sharp new styling and extra equipment, it has also undergone detailed changes to improve its dynamic performance, ride comfort and, in respect of the best-selling 2.0-litre D-4D engine, lower emissions and better fuel economy.

Thanks to the revised engine, new Avensis is also primed to deliver significant savings in ownership costs through less money spent at the pumps, lower road tax and, crucial for business users, more favourable company car tax ratings. With new, longer service intervals factored into the cost equation for business motorists, new Avensis delivers a best-in-class pence-per-mile cost over three years/60,000 miles.

Revised 2.0 D-4D engine
The 148bhp Toyota Optimal Drive 2.0-litre D-4D engine is well-established at the heart of the Avensis range. For the new model, it has undergone a series of changes that yield remarkable gains in emissions and fuel economy.

Compared to the previous engine, combined cycle fuel economy has improved by 15 per cent, from 53.3 to 61.4mpg and a 14 per cent reduction has been achieved in CO2 emissions, which fall from 139 to 119g/km. Overall the engine is 3kg lighter, quieter and gives more linear torque.

Key changes include a new turbocharger with lower friction bearings and an electric actuator. The torque characteristics of each gear have also been adjusted and as a result, drivers enjoy greater torque at low speeds.

Improvements in engine cooling and lubrication and the use of low rolling resistance tyres have helped cut the CO2 exhaust emissions, along with new glow plug control, changes to the diesel particulate filter and a new piston bowl shape that allows for improved combustion performance.

Elsewhere in the new Avensisline-up the Toyota Optimal Drive 1.8 Valvematic petrol engine with manual or Multidrive S continuously variable transmission and the 2.2-litre D-4D and D-CAT diesels – the latter with six-speed automatic transmission – are carried over from the previous model range.

Ride, handling and comfort
Making new Avensis a more rewarding drive, with better comfort levels, was a prime goal of the development team. To achieve the desired result, the car has a more rigid body and benefits from changes to the front and rear suspension. Small – but telling – adjustments have been made to the aerodynamics and strategic use of extra insulation material has further reduced NVH levels in the cabin.

Particular attention has been paid to the electric power steering, which adopts a quicker gear ratio, giving more direct performance, making the car more agile and manoeuvrable.

The focus on comfort extends to changing the design of the front seats to offer better lateral support.

Improved total ownership costs
Thanks to the substantial reduction achieved in CO2 emissions, the new 2.0-litre D-4D engine delivers a 17 per cent Benefit-in-Kind company car tax rating, four points lower than the previous model. This combines with the new model’s higher equipment specification to make it a very attractive proposition for business customers, delivering significant savings compared to rival models in terms of both tax bills and the features you get for your money.

Among its key competitors, none matches Avensis in providing satellite navigation as standard, let alone the advanced connectivity and information features included in the Toyota Touch & Go system.

Overall, the new Avensis 2.0 D-4D cuts the cost-of-ownership bill by £2,000 compared to the previous model thanks to the improved residual values, fuel economy, CO2 emissions and service, maintenance and repair costs over three years/60,000 miles. Crunching the figures into a pence-per-mile cost, the new Avensis 2.0 D-4D dips below the 50p mark to deliver the best performance among key competitors, as the table below shows.

The anticipation is over: Toyota’s new GT 86 sports car makes its world debut at the Tokyo motor show on November 30. The compact 2+2 model, one of the most keenly awaited new cars of the coming year, will go on sale in the UK in June 2012.

The GT 86 has been conceived as an entirely driver-focused machine, designed to deliver the core qualities of the classic sports car experience. That means precise, instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs and the kind of performance that appeals to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.

The GT 86 is built on a new platform, with a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car’s mechanical elements. Rather than fitting a heavy, large capacity powertrain, Toyota has opted instead to go back to its sporting roots, installing a compact, front-mounted, free-revving petrol engine that drives the rear wheels.

This four-cylinder “boxer” unit generates 197bhp at 7,000rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm at 6,600rpm, giving the GT 86 brisk, engaging performance.

The powertrain is matched to the world’s most compact four-seat design to create a car that benefits from light weight, low inertia and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power-to-weight ratio. For the driver that means lively, accessible performance and dynamic character with minimal intrusion from electronic systems.

Packaging

The GT 86 measures 4,240mm long, 1,285mm high and 2,570mm wide, dimensions which make it the most compact four-seater sports car available today.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance: the car has a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution. The flat-four engine format and the driver’s hip point – the lowest of any current Toyota production model – together give the GT 86 an ultra-low centre of gravity, at just 475mm.

The GT 86 makes the most of a light kerb weight, making it easy for drivers to exploit its nimble handling and cornering poise. The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. The car rides on 17-inch wheels and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes fore and aft.

World’s first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S

The GT 86’s engine is the result of a joint Toyota and Subaru development programme that brings together their technical know-how and mutual passion for sports cars.

Toyota has added its D-4S injection technology to Subaru’s new, horizontally opposed, naturally aspirated 1,998cc four-cylinder boxer engine. This system features separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, and a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, increasing power and torque across a wide range of engine speeds without sacrificing fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

The flat-four engine has equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm and drives through either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts using a tactile, short-throw lever; the automatic transmission can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel.

Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential to give the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The ABS and switchable vehicle stability control systems have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car’s performance envelope with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience.

Design

The design of the GT 86 successfully works within the technical constraints of achieving the most compact dimensions possible, a low centre of gravity and aerodynamic performance inspired by motorsport technology, while also displaying evocative, sweeping styling that recalls Toyota’s sports car heritage.

Toyota’s new design language informs the styling, as in the way attention is focused on the lower part of the car with the large lower grille. Elsewhere the “keen” approach can be witnessed in the clear, expressive lines.

The lower grille’s “scorpion” look gives the GT 86 a more powerful appearance, with further sporting details including the model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, twin exhausts and the “86” piston logo that denotes the car’s special powertrain configuration.

On board, the ergonomics and function of every element the driver interacts with have been scrutinised to make driving the car as natural, instinctive and rewarding as possible. For example, the steering wheel has a 365mm diameter, making it the smallest ever fitted to a Toyota, and it is trimmed in buckskin, developed from exhaustive feedback from test drivers on how to achieve the best steering performance and grip.

The three-meter instrument cluster is arranged around a large tachometer, its design benefiting from close attention to the positioning of the displays, markings and typeface. The result is the best possible visibility and readability. The driver-focus of the cockpit is further reinforced by the carbon-effect trim, all-black roof lining, red stitching on the upholstery, aviation-style rocker switches and lightweight, aluminium pedals.

Toyota’s 50-year sports car heritage

The GT 86 may be launched as the world’s only current sports car to feature a front-mounted, horizontally opposed engine and rear-wheel drive, but it cannot claim to be the first. That honour is held by Toyota’s two-cylinder boxer-engined Sports 800, which the company began developing in 1962. Since then, Toyota has established a long history of producing exciting, driver-focused sports cars with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format that have proved as popular with the public as they have been successful in competition.

The beautiful 2000 GT, a coupe powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, was first displayed at the 1965 Tokyo motor show and helped establish Toyota’s global reputation as a sports car manufacturer.

Launched in 1971, the first Celica models featured rear-wheel drive powertrains and were praised by enthusiasts for their agility. All four Supra generations came with straight-six engines and rear-wheel drive, while from 1984 the MR2 won recognition as one of the best handling sports cars in motoring history.

The inspiration for the GT 86, however, is the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86, a car with an enduring reputation for delivering sheer excitement and capturing the fundamental joy of driving. Its front-engine, rear-wheel drive package, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio made it a must-have choice for rallying and circuit driving throughout its production life, from 1983 to 1987. Here in the UK the GT claimed two British Touring Car Championship titles and a series of top-level rally victories.

The GT 86 is a genuinely lightweight machine that offers the intimacy and involvement of a car that can be driven as though an extension of the driver’s body. In this way, it perfectly recaptures the exhilarating spirit of the last of the AE86. And, with numerous customisable parts, its shares its predecessor’s aim to be an affordable car that will evolve with its owner.

The start of production of the new Avensis at Toyota’s Burnaston factory brings some welcome good news for Britain’s manufacturing industry. And as the first cars come off the line, Toyota is announcing prices for the new car which match those for the current model, in spite of the extra equipment, new styling and improved performance on offer.

The introduction of the revised Avensis, which will reach showrooms early next year, reaffirms Toyota’s commitment to Burnaston and to UK manufacturing. Burnaston is Toyota’s largest production site in Europe and has benefited from £1.15 billion investment since it opened in 1992 and, as the centre for all Avensis production, has built three generations of the model since 1997.

Tony Walker, Toyota Manufacturing UK Deputy Managing Director, said: “This is great news for Burnaston, we are proud to be starting work on the new Avensis, a car that is central to Toyota’s European strategy and a key model for the UK. British-built, and with petrol engines sourced from Toyota’s Deeside factory plus ultra-efficient diesels, it is a stronger market contender than ever before.”

Unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt motor show, the new-look Avensis builds on the spaciousness, practicality and fuel efficiency that are the established hallmark qualities of the model, delivering sharper contemporary styling, a quieter and more comfortable cabin and improved driving dynamics. In addition, its top-selling 2.0-litre D-4D engine has been significantly revised to achieve lower emissions and better fuel economy: with CO2 levels brought down to 119g/km, it strengthens Avensis’s appeal as a high value proposition, particularly for fleet operators and company car drivers.

The new Avensis is introduced with prices for the T2, TR and T Spirit saloon and tourer matched to those of the current model. There is a small decrease in the price of T4 models, taking into account revisions to the specification. The new range starts at £18,450 for the 1.8 Valvematic T2 saloon with six-speed manual transmission.

SEMA Show-time in Las Vegas for Toyota is all about giving iQ the kind of look-at-me dazzle that’s perfect for the world’s most famous adult playground. The specialist auto show is hosting an array of full-blooded customised versions that take the style-setting urban car into a new world of pumped bodywork and pimped interiors.

Three iQ have been created for the show’s Tuner Challenge, with a fourth custom special displaying a radical chop-top look. They are joined at SEMA by further American-market models that have been given ultimate makeovers, plus some of Toyota’s latest State-side racing machinery.

Michael Chang, Jon Sibal and Tatsu are the famous tuners who have worked their magic on iQ. Chang has produced the iQ-RS, giving the car the full motorsport treatment: key elements include a carbon fibre body kit, Air Runner suspension, Sparco race seats and Advan Racing wheels.

Sibal’s iQ RX has a full body kit courtesy of Veilside, finished in a subtle matte metallic grey and bronze pearl paint finish. The engine has extra punch thanks to a Nitrous Express injection kit, and the wheels are 18-inch three-piece forged HRE rims. Again, Air Runner suspension sits the car close to the ground.

Tatsu’s iQ-MR takes an even more radical approach, moving the engine – rebuilt by Mavrik Motorsports – amid-ships to drive the rear wheels. The bodywork has been customised with new panels from Speciality Cars and 16-inch Sakura wheels from Axis are fitted.

These tuner specials are joined by the Pit Boss Cartel iQ, a chop-top designed for duty as a racing pits support vehicle. Cartel has removed the roof, reduced the size of the doors and fitted tough metal interior panels and carbon fibre seats and trims.

More radical still, this iQ can be controlled by iPad and serves as a mobile WiFi hotspot and power charging station.

SEMA also marks the public debut of the first race car to be developed from the new, third generation Yaris. The Yaris B-Spec Club Racer will be competing in SCCA championship racing in the USA next year, driven by American BMX star Jamie Bestwick.

The SEMA show opens at the Las Vegas Convention Center on 1 November.

Toyota will be out in force in this year’s RAC Future Car Challenge with a trio of models demonstrating the breadth of its industry-leading technologies for developing cleaner, sustainable transport.

The annual green motoring competition, taking place on 5 November, will see the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will make its market debut next year joined on a 64-mile test route from Brighton to London by Toyota’s FCHV-adv, a zero-emissions vehicle which showcases Toyota’s latest advances in harnessing hydrogen power. Also taking part will be the Auris full hybrid hatchback – Britain’s first home-built hybrid car.

At the wheel will be some of the country’s most influential motoring journalists, together with Don Wales, the UK electric land speed record holder.

Prius Plug-in Hybrid delivers the “best of both worlds” with a powertrain that features both a high-capacity, rechargeable lithium-ion battery and an ultra-efficient 1.8-litre petrol engine with intelligent valve timing – VVT-i. The advanced battery technology allows the car to be driven for around 14 miles on its electric power alone – with no tailpipe emissions and zero fuel consumption. Once Prius Plug-in Hybrid has reached the limits of electric range, it switches seamlessly to its full hybrid system, bringing the petrol engine into play. This means the driver can avoid the “range anxiety” associated with all-electric vehicles.

Recharging the battery is quick and simple, taking about 1.5 hours for a full charge on a simple link to home or workplace electricity supply or a roadside charging point. Toyota demonstration programmes for the plug-in hybrid technology, including one in progress in London with EDF Energy and fleet operators from the public and private sector, have already produced real-world data that show the benefits it can deliver in terms of reduced emissions and lower fuel consumption. Ahead of the production car being launched in 2012, Toyota anticipates CO2 emissions below 50g/km and combined cycle fuel economy of 134.5mpg.

The FCHV-adv demonstrates the significant progress Toyota has made in producing a hybrid system with a hydrogen fuel cell. Based on a conventional Toyota Highlander SUV, it showcases a technology that Toyota expects to bring to the market place as early as 2015.

The FCHV-adv fuel cell system features four compressed hydrogen fuel tanks, an electric motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery, and a power control unit. Hydrogen gas is fed into the fuel cell stack where it is combined with oxygen. The electricity produced by this chemical reaction is used to power the electric motor and to charge the battery. In addition to superior fuel economy, the FCHV-adv produces zero emissions while driving.

Auris Hybrid, built at Toyota’s Burnaston factory in Derbyshire, has brought the benefits of full hybrid technology to the heart of the compact family hatchback market. Emitting just 89g/km of CO2, it qualifies for zero annual road tax, with further savings in fuel: the car’s official consumption figure is 74.3mpg – both around town and on the open road. In 2011, its first full year of sale, 40% of all Auris sold have been hybrid.

Auris Hybrid proved its strengths in last year’s inaugural Future Car Challenge, winning the category for the most economic and environmentally friendly regular passenger hybrid electric vehicle.

More details about the Future Car Challenge can be found at the official event web site at www.futurecarchallenge.com. The Toyota cars will join more than 60 other competing vehicles in a public display in Regent Street at the conclusion of the challenge, which takes place the day before this year’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Toyota will present several new models at this year’s Frankfurt motor show next week (13 September), with world premieres for both the new Avensis and the new Prius family of full hybrid models. The new 2012 Hilux will also be making its European debut and the three-door version of the recently launched new Yaris will be on public view for the first time.

The changes to the British-built Avensis include revised exterior styling, incorporating a frontal treatment that follows Toyota’s new design language. The quality look and feel of the interior have been improved and strategic changes have been made to the powertrains and driving dynamics. Together, these changes represent the largest mid-life investment Toyota has made for any model.

With more than 2.3 million worldwide sales, Prius’s success story is well established. At Frankfurt a new chapter will open with the world-first introduction of the new Prius family of models. Toyota’s full hybrid model has been updated and is joined by the production version of Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the seven-seat Prius+. The introduction of these models will make Prius the first full hybrid to be offered as a complete, stand-alone model range.

Each new model has been developed to expand the Prius customer base by catering for specific customer needs. Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the most technically advanced Prius yet, with CO2 emissions potentially as low as 49g/km. Prius+ will deliver sub-100g/km CO2 emissions and is the first vehicle in Europe to offer the versatility of seven seats with the benefit of a full hybrid powertrain.

Hilux, Europe’s best-selling pick-up, has undergone major restyling for 2012, reinforcing its credentials as a vehicle cut out for hard work and for leisure driving. The exterior changes are complemented by a new-look interior that offers the comfort and convenience of a passenger car.

Completing the new Toyota arrivals at Frankfurt is the three-door version of new Yaris, making its public debut.

When it comes to buying a new car, balancing what you want with what you can afford is a familiar compromise, but the new Toyota Yaris succeeds not only in delivering the kind of features that are high on most customers’ wish list, but at prices that are eminently affordable. More than that, new Yaris offers lasting value, commanding some best-in-class residual value ratings.

Figures from CAP monitor for new Yaris estimate that, according to grade, it will hold between 39 and 42 per cent of its original value after three years or 30,000 miles, an improvement of between five and seven per cent on the previous generation. The prospect is even stronger for models fitted with the new Toyota Touch and Go satellite navigation and connected information and communications package, with the quoted RV higher by a further two points.

The TR grade – core model in the new Yaris range – demonstrates Toyota’s focus on providing as standard features that are highly desirable for today’s customers, including: -

Toyota Touch touchscreen controls

15-inch alloy wheels

Bluetooth

USB port

Rear-view camera (a first-in-segment for standard equipment)

Air conditioning

Leather trim details

Toyota Touch and Go sat-nav and connected services upgrade – free for first six months of new Yaris sales, thereafter an extra-cost option (£500)

Seven airbags and vehicle stability control

The five-door 1.33-litre VVT-i TR, expected to be the best-selling model, costs £13,260 on-the-road and has a 40 per cent RV from CAP Monitor – 42 per cent with Touch and Go, the best rating in its class, up to 10 per cent higher than its supermini rivals.

For potential customers, affordability is critical and here, again, new Yaris performs strongly. For example, the entry point to the TR grade, the three-door 1.0-litre VVT-i model, costs £214 a month on an Access Toyota personal contract purchase (PCP) plan*. And it requires just an extra £10 a month to upgrade to the 1.33-litre VVT-I SR model, kitted out with 16-inch smoked chrome alloys and trim, rear privacy glass, part-leather upholstery, sports suspension and rear privacy glass.

The top-of-the range T Spirit, with panoramic glass roof, automatic headlights and wipers, Smart Entry and Start and dual-zone climate control, adds no more than £18 to the SR monthly PCP price.

For added peace of mind, all new Yaris are backed by Toyota’s five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

In designing the new Yaris, Toyota has produced a look that is bolder, sharper and more dynamic, while remaining true to the principle of “compact outside, spacious inside” that has characterised the car since the original model broke cover in 1999.

In the words of chief designer Dezi Nagaya the exterior has a “keen” appearance, witnessed particularly in the all-new front end with its slim, horizontal headlights and prominent, deep lower air intake that anchors the car’s wide stance, broadcasting a low centre of gravity.

In profile, there is still the distinctive, steeply sloping belt line running the length of the vehicle, while at the rear, the familiar Yaris Y-shaped graphic is retained, but expressed in distinctive new styling. Detail touches include a larger front quarterlight, with the A-pillar moved further forward, giving a more steeply raked windscreen. And the rear side windows have been rendered smarter, by taking away the vertical bar that previously divided the glazing.

Shorter front and rear overhangs, a 50mm increase in the wheelbase and more prominent wheelarches give the car a sportier look.

Overall new Yaris is just 100mm longer than the previous model, which means it keeps its urban-friendly tight turning circle of just 4.7m. The width is unchanged, but trimming the height by 20mm to 1,510mm adds to the car’s lower, more purposeful appearance, while the efficient aerodynamic qualities of the body deliver a class leading drag coefficient of Cd 0.287.

New Yaris’s bolder look is completed by new 15 and 16-inch alloy wheel designs and a choice of 10 colours for the body, including two completely new shades – Deep Aqua and Burning Red.

There is an equally fresh approach to the interior, with a new focus on creating a cockpit environment for the driver. The principal meters have moved from the centre of the dashboard to sit directly in the driver’s eyeline behind the steering wheel, which itself has a more upright angle for a more engaging driving position.

The strong horizontal lines of the new dashboard emphasise the generous width of the cabin – 30mm greater than before – with a new soft-padded dash section with matching upper door panel pads. The colour of these padded sections co-ordinates with inserts in the seat upholstery, reinforcing the general high quality feel of the interior. A panoramic glass roof is available (standard on the top-of-the-range model) that increases the spacious feel of the cabin.

Tactile, premium details add to the quality look and feel, with gun metal trims around the driver’s instruments, the multimedia touchscreen and air vents, and chrome detailing on the controls and switchgear.

The front seats are new, with increased vertical adjustment and, on some models, an arm rest for the driver. Their design gives both better body holding and comfort, with wider, higher sided cushions that have a raised front edge which can help combat tiredness on long journeys.

Thinner seatbacks for the front seats mean more kneeroom for those sitting in the rear – a class-leading 645mm. A similar design treatment for the rear seats has helped increase loadspace depth by 145mm to 710mm – another best-in-class figure. Overall luggage capacity has grown to 347 litres (to roof line) with the rear seats in place, 768 litres when they are folded flat. And to make the job of loading up easier, the tailgate is 20mm wider than on the previous model.

Toyota’s “indestructible” Hilux has a new look and new hi-tech features for 2012. The redoubtable pick-up has been given a comprehensive re-style from the A-pillar forwards, with a new bonnet, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper, plus new wheel designs and new side bars and steps for the top-of-the-range Hilux Invincible.

The interior has been given a new look, too, with new upper dashboard design and horizontal instrument cluster that emphasise the breadth and roominess of the cabin.

The revised lay-out incorporates the new Toyota Touch multimedia unit with a full colour 6.1-inch touchscreen. The Touch package, fitted as standard to the HL3 and Invincible models also includes Bluetooth and a USB port for connecting digital music players.

The quality feel of the cabin has been improved with new, uniform dark finishes and new chrome surround for the instrument binnacle on the Invincible.

The 2012 Hilux carries forward its current engines, the 142bhp 2.5 D-4D and 169bhp 3.0 D-4D units, but these now comply with the Euro 5 light commercial vehicle emissions standards ahead of their introduction at the beginning of next year, thanks to the adoption of a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

As a result of the adjustments to the engines, CO2 emissions for the 2.5 D-4D (Double Cab) have been cut by more than 10 per cent to 194g/km, becoming best in class and combined fuel consumption has also improved by more than 10 per cent to 38.7mpg (all bodystyles).

The emissions figure for the 3.0 D-4D Double Cab automatic has fallen to 227g/km and the manual to 203g/km. Combined fuel consumption figures are improved from 31.7 to 32.8mpg and 34.0 to 36.7mpg respectively.

The standard five-speed manual transmission and the optional five-speed automatic for the 3.0 D-4D engine, exclusive to the Invincible, are also retained.

Similarly the grade line-up of HL2, HL3 and Invincible, and the choice of single, extra and double cab bodystyles are offered for the 2012 model year.

From launch, Hilux will be available with a comprehensive choice of accessory packs to tailor the vehicle to suit the needs of both business users and those owners who need to use Hilux for more everyday driving duties, or want to give their vehicle an extra dash of style.

The 2012 Hilux goes on sale in the UK in October and prices are below.

The launch of the third generation Yaris opens a new chapter in the model’s UK success story.

The current Yaris won praise for its roomy interior, durability and versatility, the efficiency of its engines and its easy-to-drive character around town. New Yaris will consolidate these strengths and go further to offer sharper, contemporary styling, a step-up in quality, even greater agility and a breakthrough in affordable multimedia connectivity with Toyota Touch and Go.

Toyota Touch and Go
Positioned at the heart of the small car market, new Yaris will appeal both to technology-focused customers and those motorists for whom quality, practicality and value for money are the key considerations when choosing a new car.

The Toyota Touch audio system, including touchscreen controls, is fitted as standard to all but the entry level new Yaris model in the UK, additionally providing Bluetooth, a USB port and a rear parking camera. This can be upgraded to the Toyota Touch and Go system which provides full map satellite navigation and access to a range of connected information services that can be accessed and downloaded via a dedicated Toyota customer portal.

Powertrains
New Yaris continues with the successful mixture of powertrains featured in the previous generation model: 1.0 and 1.33-litre petrol units and a 1.4-litre D-4D turbodiesel.

All engines benefit from the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of engineering and design technologies which, combined with weight-saving measures and aerodynamics improvements, help cut fuel consumption and emissions without harming power and torque levels.

Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol is a textbook example of miniaturisation, a reference point for compact, efficient engineering. Working with a five-speed manual transmission, the latest version of the 998cc unit generates 68bhp at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 93Nm at 3,600rpm. Fuel consumption has been improved by four per cent to 58.9mpg* and CO2 emissions are down by seven per cent to 111g/km*.

The 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine is also light and compact, with a small bore and long stroke to give a very high power-to-weight ratio. It generates 98bhp at 6,000rpm and, at the peak of a gentle torque curve, 125Nm at 4,000rpm. When matched to the new Multidrive S transmission, fuel economy is 56.5mpg* and CO2 emissions are 118g/km*.

Multidrive S, Toyota’s latest continuously variable transmission (CVT), features a manual override, sequential seven-step mode that the driver can operate using either the gearshift lever or paddle shifts on the steering wheel.

The 1.4-litre D-4D engine is fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and is matched to a six-speed manual transmission. It produces 89bhp at 3,800rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm between 1,800 and 2,800rpm. For new Yaris, combined cycle fuel economy has been improved by seven per cent to 72.4mpg* and CO2 emissions are six per cent lower at 104g/km*.

* Guideline figures prior to official homologation.

UK range and prices
New Yaris will be offered in the UK in four grades – T2, TR, SR and T Spirit – which deliver an emphatic combination of high specification, quality and great value for money. Cars are available to order now, with first deliveries to customers from mid-September.

The heart of the range is the TR. Expected to command two thirds of new Yaris sales, it is available with all engine and transmission combinations, in three and five-door bodystyles. Key features of the TR include15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Toyota Touch with touchscreen audio controls, Bluetooth and rear parking camera

The SR, available exclusively with the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine, has a sportier profile with a range of interior and exterior styling elements. Equipment highlights include 16-inch alloy wheels, rear roof spoiler, front fog lamps, part-leather upholstery, rear privacy glass and lowered suspension.

T Spirit focuses on premium features and is available in five-door format with the 1.33- litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine. Principal equipment of the T Spirit grade includes a panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror and smart entry and start.

On-the-road prices for new Yaris start at £11,170. Insurance groups will be announced in August.

Taking just 48.07 seconds to blast up the 1.6 mile driveway of Goodwood House, a 800bhp Toyota Celica was the fastest car overall at Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2011.

To win the Celica had to beat many famous racing cars, including recent Formula 1 cars.

The car was driven and built by former British Rally Champion, Jonny Milner. Milner had narrowly missed out in previous years and returned in 2011 with an extra 100bhp to clinch the FTD (fastest time of the day) in front of a massive crowd swelled by the presence of stars such as F1 champion Lewis Hamilton.

Rising over 300ft from the start line to the finish, the course is very technical and challenging, putting the skills of the world’s very best drivers and riders to the ultimate test of concentration and speed.

A small mistake by former British Rally Champion Milner meant he narrowly missed winning the televised “shootout” on Sunday afternoon, but his time set earlier in the day was the fastest of all 200 cars over the prestigious three day event.

Based on the sixth generation Celica, Milner’s car is super-lightweight, tipping the scales at just 1,050kg. For better weight distribution, the driver’s position has moved back 12 inches, and the car’s centre of gravity has been lowered by raising the wheel arches and upper suspension mounts. A flat floor and rear diffuser add a degree of ground effect.

The engine is from a World Rally Championship winning Corolla, newly fitted with a Rotrex supercharger that will help raise maximum output to more than 800bhp. A nitrous oxide injection system helped reduce turbo-lag for quicker acceleration off the line. Super soft rallycross specification Michelin slick tyres also played an important role in getting all that horsepower to the ground.

The Toyota Avensis, built exclusively at Toyota’s UK factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, is to be exported to Japan. The launch of the third-generation Avensis in Toyota’s “home” market later this year further strengthens the performance of the UK plant, which already ships the model to 47 countries worldwide.

The news has been welcomed by the Government as an endorsement of British manufacturing skills and quality. Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Toyota exports 85 per cent of the cars and engines it makes at its UK plants in Burnaston and Deeside. Today’s news that it will now also export its Avensis model to Japan is a tribute to the skills of the workforce, the efficiency of the plant and the quality of its products.”

Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd Managing Director Katsunori Kojima said: “We are very proud that the Avensis has been selected for export to Japan. This is yet another vote of confidence for the factory and the high quality of our products.”

Demand for European styling and engineering from Japanese customers has prompted Toyota’s decision to introduce Avensis to the home market. The Tourer estate car versions will be offered, powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine with Multidrive S continuously variable transmission (CVT) for fuel efficient, low emissions performance. The cars will be shipped from the UK at a rate of 750 vehicles a month with production commencing in July.

The Toyota Avensis was introduced in 1997. By the end of 2010, more than 1.8 million Avensis vehicles had been built – all at Burnaston – for sale in the UK, Europe and other markets worldwide.

Together with Toyota’s other European production centres, the UK factory has succeeded in returning quickly to the production levels and operating hours that were in place prior to the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March. The additional exports to Japan will reinforce its performance and its position as one of Toyota’s most efficient and advanced factories. The factory also builds Auris hatchback models and has the distinction of being the first factory in Europe to mass produce a full hybrid model, the Auris Hybrid. To date Toyota has invested over £1.85 billion in its UK manufacturing operations since being established in 1992.

The third generation Toyota Yaris will be launched in the UK this summer.

Developed from an original concept of “compact outside, spacious inside,” new Yaris shows Toyota further improving the clever packaging that was a hallmark of its predecessors.

Moreover, it will mark a breakthrough in its segment for affordable multimedia connectivity with the introduction of Toyota Touch & Go. Due to be standard equipment on 95 per cent of sales. It features a 6.1-inch display with touch screen technology for ease of use and functionality.

Manufactured at Toyota’s Valenciennes factory in France, new Yaris has been designed and engineered to deliver the highest possible build quality. Inside, high quality materials and surface finishes have been used, and there is a more driver-focused cockpit.

Three different low emissions, fuel-efficient Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains will be available: 1.0-litre VVT-i and 1.33-litre dual VVT-i petrol units and a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel.

Didier Leroy, President and CEO Toyota Motor Europe, said: “New Yaris represents Toyota’s strongest offer yet in the important supermini segment. With its new levels of ingenuity, efficiency and quality, we are confident it can build upon Yaris’s previous success and help Toyota rejuvenate its presence in Europe and move towards one million annual sales in the region in the medium term.”

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK is set to be the first UK car manufacturer to install a large scale solar panel array after the scheme gained approval from its local planning authority. Work has started on installing the ground-mounted system at Toyota’s vehicle plant in Derbyshire, where Auris hybrid, Auris and Avensis cars are built for the UK and export markets.

The solar array is located on 90,000m2 of industrial land within the plant and consists of around 17,000 panels – enough to cover almost four and a half football pitches*** – all of which will be manufactured in the UK. Generating electricity for use on site, the project will help reduce the plant’s carbon footprint, support energy security and cut its power bills. The scheme will save up to 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year and the saving in energy will be equivalent to 4,600,000 kWh. When fully operational it will be capable of supplying enough energy to build approximately 7,000 cars a year.

The solar panels will cost more than £10 million and will be installed and paid for by British Gas. Installation work has started and the array is expected to begin supplying power to the plant in July.

The development is a key part of Toyota’s ‘Sustainable Plant’ vision in which manufacturing operations are designed to work in harmony with their local community and surrounding environment. The UK is one of just five Toyota plants worldwide to be designated a Sustainable Plant with first-rate environmental credentials.

Tony Walker, Toyota Manufacturing UK Deputy Managing Director said: “We are already making a significant contribution to the UK’s low carbon economy with production of Auris hybrid – the first European built full hybrid car. Generating solar power on-site to supply electricity to the plant underlines our commitment to do even more to further reduce our carbon footprint and is yet another example of our environmental leadership. We are delighted to be working in partnership with British Gas to achieve this.”

The new FT-86 II Concept makes its world debut at the Geneva motor show, giving the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota’s next sports car. It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s.

With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the FT-86 II pays homage to Toyota’s sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota’s European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed ‘functional beauty’: its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT86 II returns to Toyota’s sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

The FT-86 II Concept is the latest stage in the development of a new, compact rear-wheel drive sports car that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). The new model will be launched in Europe in 2012.

Toyota returns to the B-MPV market with the Verso-S, a new model that majors on delivering exceptional space and great flexibility within compact overall dimensions. In terms of size, it may be the smallest competitor in the mini-MPV segment, but clever Toyota design has produced an interior that verges on compact family hatchback levels of passenger and load space.

Toyota can be credited with originating the B-MPV concept 10 years ago when it launched Yaris Verso. It re-enters the segment at a time of significant growth: European sales have almost tripled since 2002 as more and more motorists look to downsize and take advantage of the inherent convenience, efficiency and user friendliness of the mini-MPV. These customers are not only families making a switch from conventional B-segment hatchbacks, they also include empty nesters and older people looking for smaller cars that are easy to drive, with no sacrifice in the levels of space, comfort, equipment and quality they are used to.

On the outside the five-door Verso-S is shorter overall (less than four metres long) than any of its market rivals, but within a generous 2,550mm wheelbase Toyota has crafted exceptional interior space for both passengers and luggage. Every detail was addressed in the quest for the best possible packaging, including using a slimmer front seat design and tailoring the profile of the rear door trims to add extra “foot space” for easy passenger access.

The 60:40 rear seats can be folded flat in a one-touch action, a job that is made easier thanks to extra control levers being provided in the boot, and a two-position lightweight deckboard allows for loadspace depth to be easily adjusted. On T Spirit models a maximum 1,388 litres is available with the rear seats folded down.

Powertrain, emissions and economy

All versions of Verso-S are powered by Toyota’s 98bhp 1.33-litre VVT-i petrol engine, delivering the lowest CO2 emissions and best fuel economy in the mini-MPV segment

When matched to a six-speed manual transmission, the system delivers 127g/km and combined cycle fuel economy of 51.4mpg. Thanks the higher efficiency of the Multidrive S CVT – the only transmission of its kind in the segment – CO2 figures are lower still at 120g/km, with an improvement in average fuel consumption to 54.3mpg (combined cycle).

Verso-S introduces Toyota Touch, a new multimedia touchscreen system for controlling audio and communications functions. It is fitted as standard to all versions of the car and comes with Bluetooth for hands-free mobile phone use and audio streaming, plus a USB port for connecting personal music players. Toyota Touch also features a trip information screen, displaying details of journey time, distance and fuel economy, including journey-by-journey comparison records.

From May 2011 owners will be able to upgrade Toyota Touch with a new Touch and Go navigation package. This provides all key navigation functions, plus the flexibility to add more advanced features and applications, accessed via Google.

Verso-S is available in two trims – TR and T Spirit. Key features of the TR include Toyota Touch, Bluetooth, reversing camera, front fog lamps, air conditioning, seven airbags (including driver’s knee airbag) and one-touch folding rear seats.

T Spirit models additionally feature 16-inch alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, a panoramic glass roof (the largest in the segment) and dark-tinted rear privacy glass.

Three option packs are available: Style Pack, with additional exterior chrome trim details; Leather Pack, with premium two-tone grey leather upholstery; and Protection Pack, which provides rear parking sensors, a boot liner and scuff plates.

From May, the Touch and Go navigation package will also be available (details above).

Retail sales are expected to account for more than 75 per cent of Verso-S sales, with 70 per cent of these being T Spirit models.

Through its Centre network, Toyota is offering special launch prices for the new model: the TR is available for £13,995 on-the-road, with the T Spirit costing £14,995. Opting for Multidrive S adds £1,150 to the price.

Making its debut at the Chicago Auto Show with new changes for MY 2011, the sporty five-door Toyota Matrix deftly combines a fun-to-drive spirit with the utility of a small SUV and excellent fuel economy. In 2011, the Matrix will feature new standard wheels, interior design features, the Toyota Care complimentary maintenance plan, and standard Smart Stop Technology.

The 2011 Matrix continues to feature Toyota Star Safety System™ as standard equipment, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also includes standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system.

Performance and Efficiency

The 2011 Matrix is available in two grades: base Matrix and the sporty S grade. Powertrain choices include 1.8- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, a five-speed manual transmission, and either four- or five-speed automatic transmissions. All-wheel drive (AWD) with active torque control is available in the Matrix S, teamed to the 2.4-liter engine.

The Matrix grade is equipped with a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which produces 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to help optimize performance and economy. The 1.8-liter engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission (ECT).

The Matrix S features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 158 hp at 6,000 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A balance shaft suppresses vibration, and the exhaust system is engineered for reduced backpressure for improved performance.

The 2.4-liter engine channels its power through a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) Matrix S is equipped with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and the ECT 4-speed automatic transmission.

For a more engaging driving experience, the driver can shift the five-speed automatic manually by moving the shift lever to the left from its “D” position into the “S” position, then pushing forward for upshifts and back for downshifts.

Both automatics use a torque converter with flex lockup for increased fuel efficiency. Uphill/downhill shift control selects the proper gear for conditions and helps provide moderate engine braking during downhill driving.

The Matrix grade has earned an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the 1.8-liter with the five-speed manual transmission, and 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the 1.8-liter paired with the four-speed automatic transmission.

The Matrix S powered by the 2.4-liter engine with five-speed manual transmission achieves an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. With the five speed automatic transmission, it earns 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The Matrix S AWD with the four-speed automatic achieves 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

Handling and Ride

The Matrix is built around a stiff, rigid body structure that relies on high tensile-strength steels, gussets and crossmembers for its strength, rigidity and light weight. The front suspension is composed of a compact, rigid L-arm-type independent MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar. The Matrix S AWD features a double-wishbone rear suspension with a coil-over-shock arrangement, which allows efficient packaging along with excellent handling and ride comfort.

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all Matrix models. The Matrix grade is equipped with 10.7-inch ventilated front discs and 10.1-inch solid discs in the rear. Matrix S features 11.6-inch ventilated front discs and 10.9-inch solid discs in the rear (11.0-inch for AWD).

The Matrix’s newly designed standard 16-inch steel wheels come with sporty six-spoke full wheel covers and P205/55R16 tires. Distinctive all-new 17-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels are available on Matrix S with 215/45R17 tires.

The available AWD system with active torque control on the Matrix S is front-wheel-drive-based and distributes torque to the rear wheels through an electromagnetic coupler when needed, such as when the front wheels slip, during heavy acceleration, or on a grade. This active torque control system detects available traction based on signals sent from the ABS sensors on each wheel to the ECU. Traction Control (TRAC) provides an extra measure of wheel slip control, on both front-wheel-drive and AWD models.

Safety and Security

In addition to the Star Safety System, Matrix has a comprehensive list of safety features. Featuring front and rear crumple zones, the Matrix is designed to efficiently absorb and disperse impact energy throughout the body structure. Deformation of the passenger cabin is well managed due to the impact-energy-distribution design and high-strength steel used in the body.

All Matrix models are equipped with six standard airbags, including advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and front-and-rear side-curtain airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners retract the seat belt at the time of a frontal collision, and the dual-stage force limiter helps limit the seat belt force applied to the passenger’s chest. Front seats integrate active headrests. If the vehicle is struck from the rear with sufficient force, a cable-actuated mechanism in the active front headrest moves the headrest upward and forward to help limit the movement of the occupant’s head. The Matrix also features an energy-absorbing steering column.

The standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system automatically adjusts engine output and braking force at individual wheels to help control any discrepancy between where the driver is steering and where the vehicle is heading.

Comfort and Convenience

The Matrix interior is designed for form, fun and functionality with a sporty, youthful look and flexible utility at the same time. The standard tilt-and-telescopic sport steering wheel enhances driving-position comfort for a wide range of driver physiques. Front-to-back couple distance yields more rear seat room, and the 60/40 split folding rear seat includes a center-position headrest.

Generous new standard equipment on the Matrix grade includes an all-weather package; power windows with driver’s side auto down and retained power features; power door locks; cruise control; color-keyed power heated outside rearview mirrors; tilt and telescopic sport steering wheel; daytime running lights; heavy duty rear window defogger; AM/FM/CD audio with four speakers with MP3/WMA playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, and auto sound leveling (ASL); intermittent rear window wiper; 12-volt power outlet; front center-console box; and an engine immobilizer.

The Matrix S grade also adds a metallic interior trim; a 115-volt power outlet; integrated fog lamps; fold-flat front passenger seat; remote keyless entry; AM/FM/CD with MP3 capability and six speakers with MP3/WMA playback capability.

The Matrix is equipped with a high-efficiency air-conditioning system with large vents. Significantly, the system’s compressor electronically varies output capacity based on heat load and engine speed, rather than simply cycling the compressor on and off. This feature reduces noise and enhances interior comfort.

Optional Equipment

Available options on the Matrix grade include a base Sport package with front and rear underbody spoilers, integrated fog lamps, and a unique S badge.

The Matrix S offers an S Sport Package with 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear underbody spoilers, color keyed rear spoiler and a unique S badge. The Premium Package offers a power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, six speakers, XM radio (includes 90-day trial subscription), auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod connectivity, CD text display function, auto sound leveling and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology.

Exterior Design

The second-generation Matrix displays sport-coupe-inspired styling cues while maintaining impressive interior utility. The result is a sporty, dynamic shape that provides a quiet interior for five people to ride in comfort.

The Matrix has rounded rear windows and continuous character lines that run from the front grille to the A-pillar. The Matrix S, which features all-new front and rear bumpers in 2011, integrates front and rear underbody spoilers and a large mesh front fog lamp bezel.

In 2011, a new Spruce Mica color joins Matrix’s color palate, which includes Super White, Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black Sand Mica, Radiant Red, and Nautical Blue Metallic.

Interior Design

Cockpit styling in the Matrix is anchored by a driver-oriented instrument panel and console controls. The Optitron instrument-panel gauges feature bright white lighting and new silver ornamentation for 2011. A large round speedometer is mounted in the center, with a tachometer to the left and red needles that now feature a new white line, adding both style and are easy to view. A combination gauge to the right of the speedometer houses a fuel level indicator, an engine temperature indicator, and an LCD display that combines an outside temp indicator and odometer/trip meter. The center console features new metal-plated rings around the air conditioning vents, and the audio unit has a new flush surface in 2011.

In 2011, Matrix will have new seat fabrics that exude a sporty look. A choice between two interior color schemes includes dark charcoal or a combination of dark charcoal and ash gray, and a three-spoke steering wheel adds a sporty touch. Matrix S comes with a newly designed leather-trimmed steering wheel that includes spoke-mounted audio controls and hands-free Bluetooth capability.

The front center console features a movable and removable cup support element. The cup holder area can be used as a tray when the divider is removed, and all open trays have rubber mats. Multiple storage spaces are located throughout the interior, including front and rear door pockets that each holds a 20-ounce plastic bottle. Four side panel shopping bag hooks and four D-rings in the floor provide luggage tie-down convenience. A folding tonneau cover also comes standard.

The Toyota Land Cruiser clocks up 60 years this year, stronger and better than ever. Far from aging gracefully, the legendary 4×4 remains one of the toughest machines on four wheels: it’s conquered the Arctic (and Antarctic) wastes, traversed deserts, ploughed its way through tropical rain forests and generally taken the worst the world can throw at it in its stride.

As Land Cruiser reaches this landmark, Toyota is launching new top-of-the-range 60th Anniversary versions of both its standard five-door Land Cruiser and the flagship Land Cruiser V8. They have the same robust construction and sophisticated array of driving and control systems for exceptional on and off-road performance as their established sister models, together with some extra style and equipment details.

There’s more power and torque on tap, as well, as the 3.0-litre D-4D engine fitted to Land Cruiser has been re-engineered. As a result maximum output is up from 171 to 188bhp and maximum torque from 410 to 420Nm – performance gains achieved without harming fuel economy or emissions levels. With the benefit of a new diesel particulate filter (DPF), the engine meets the latest, Euro 5 emissions standards.

History
Land Cruiser’s ancestry can be traced back to the Toyota BJ of 1951, a truck-derived model that was initially developed for military use. Within six months of its launch the BJ was hailed as a champion, becoming the first vehicle to be driven to the sixth hill station of Japan’s Mount Fuji, 2,500 metres up. As a result of this feat, the BJ was added to the Japanese police fleet and the model’s long-term success began. In 1954 the new Type 25 BJ was given a generic model name – Land Cruiser – which has been used ever since.

As Toyota began its programme of worldwide exports and growth during the 1950s and ʼ60s, it found many established markets were already well-served by American and European car makers. This prompted the company to focus instead on emerging markets in Middle and Far East and South America, where Land Cruiser’s tough performance made it a strong proposition.

The Land Cruiser concept was refined in the mid-1960s, as Toyota responded to an American trend for more refined four-wheel drive vehicles. The introduction in 1966 of the first Land Cruiser Station Wagon series – forerunner of today’s Land Cruiser V8 – catered for this growing market, joining the range alongside its more rugged stablemate.

Further development of the Land Cruiser concept came in 1985, when Toyota recognised the potential for a model that could offer the manoeuvrability and uncompromised off-road strengths of the Heavy Duty series with the comfort and refinement of the Station Wagon. The result was the first Land Cruiser “Light Duty” series.

From this point Land Cruiser progressed through two further generations, in 1996 (known in the UK as the Land Cruiser Colorado) and 2002, before the launch of the current model in 2009. The larger Land Cruiser Amazon, also introduced in 1996, (replacing the Land Cruiser 80 series) was replaced with Land Cruiser V8 in February 2008.

To date more than five million Land Cruiser models have been sold in 188 different countries and regions worldwide.

As a result of customer feedback in other markets worldwide, Toyota GB today announced it would recall a number of its Toyota Avensis and Lexus IS 250 models in the UK to carry out modifications to their fuel systems.

It is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to contact registered owners and keepers by letter to advise them of the procedure for taking their vehicle to an authorised Toyota or Lexus repairer for the necessary repair work to be done.

Toyota Avensis

The issue affecting certain Avensis 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol engine models, produced between July 2000 and September 2008, is related to potential concerns with the fuel system. The first concern is related to the fuel pipe, where small cracks can potentially develop after a long period of time. The second concern is related to potential insufficient tightening of the fuel pump check valve. In the worst case, these issues may cause fuel to leak.

There have been no reports of accidents related to this condition. No complaints related to this issue have been reported in the UK.

The repair involves replacing the fuel pipe and the fuel pump check valve. The job will take approximately two to four and a half hours to complete, at no cost to the customer.

Approximately 15,500 UK registered Avensis vehicles are affected by this recall.

Lexus IS 250

The issue affecting certain Lexus IS 250 petrol engine models, produced between August 2007 and February 2009, is related to the fuel pressure sensor. Due to possible insufficient tightening, the fuel pressure sensor could loosen and in very rare cases fuel could leak.

There have been no reports of accidents related to this condition.

The repair involves retightening the fuel pressure sensor. If the fuel is leaking, the repair will involve replacing the fuel pressure sensor gasket. The job will take approximately one hour to complete, or three hours if the gasket needs to be replaced, at no cost to the customer.

Approximately 3,100 UK registered Lexus IS 250 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Jon Williams, Managing Director of Toyota GB PLC, said, “We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of all our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption.”

Small in size but big in attitude, a pumped-up, track-ready interpretation of the super-smart iQ city car leads a posse of tuned and tweaked Toyota concept and production cars at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The world’s largest annual aftermarket parts show, taking place (14 to 16 January) gives leading tuning firms and custom car specialists the chance to demonstrate their engineering and design skills, from mild sports accoutrements to the wilder fringes of auto design.

The GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by MN) iQ Racing Concept is the latest interpretation of Toyota’s smallest model by its motor sport competition partner. It’s a stand-out model, with its deep front air dam, huge lower air intake and racing wheels, but it is not just about looks: fitted with a tuned- supercharged engine and a roll-cage, it’s cut out for track action.

It has a strong heritage too: Gazoo’s previous iQ concept car was given a limited production run in Japan that sold out immediately in 2009.

G Sports (G’s) have also contributed to the Toyota presentation with Sports Concept version of Prius, with TRD adding an Auris GT Concept. As well as the cars, Toyota is hosting interactive events at the show, including forums with engineers and racing drivers and virtual driving competitions in Metapolis, an on-line community created by Gazoo Racing.

Toyota marks the next evolution of Prius with the world debut of Prius v at the North American International Auto Show. Due for market launch in the USA this summer, it is a full hybrid MPV-style model designed to bring the benefits of Toyota’s world-leading Hybrid Synergy to Drive to a new market segment.

Prius v – v for versatility – uses the same platform and full hybrid powertrain as the current generation Prius hatchback, with a more flexible design to meet the needs of growing families with active lifestyles. Featuring a spacious interior within a compact exterior, it offers more than 50 per cent more interior cargo space than its sister model.

Toyota has achieved a successful balance between spaciousness, refined style and smooth aerodynamics: Prius v has a low, 0.29 coefficient of drag, which has been achieved without compromising its convenient packaging. Its design is new from the ground up, with a shape that has evolved from Prius, rather than simply being an elongated version of the existing car.

The exterior styling is sleek, rounded and bold, with an extended roofline that allows the vehicle to retain Prius’s symbolic triangular silhouette. The trapezoidal front-end treatment features sharp-edged headlamps, wind-slipping aero corners and an enlarged lower air intake for improved aerodynamics and cooling. The rear styling is highlighted by a smart tailgate and a roof spoiler designed to improve the flow of air away from the back of the vehicle.

Inside the cabin design is spacious and flexible to meet the demands of modern active families. A high seating position supports overall comfort and good visibility, with ample headroom and an impressive 965mm couple distance that delivers good legroom for rear seat passengers.

The low- wide-opening rear hatch allows for easy loading, with 970 litres of loadspace behind the rear seats – more space than in some compact SUV models.

The second row seats have slide adjustment, making it easier to get in and out of the vehicle, and can be reclined through 45 degrees. The 60:40 split-folding function adds to the flexibility of the interior, while the front passenger seat can also be folded flat to allow longer items to be carried.

Prius v will be available with a new Toyota-developed resin panoramic sunroof that marks an 18kg weight saving compared to glass roofs of the same size, while giving excellent heat insulation performance.

In spite of its size, Prius is expected to achieve the best fuel efficiency of any SUV, crossover or estate on the US market and produce 66 per cent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average US new vehicle.

Prius v will share many of the advanced, user-friendly technologies that feature in Prius hatchback, including Normal, Power, Eco and EV driving modes, push button start and e-CVT electronic gear shift.

Prius v will be one of the first Toyota models to offer a new multimedia system that links with the owner’s mobile phone to give enhanced, integrated and wireless upgradeable navigation entertainment and information services.

Bob Carter, Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager, said: “Prius v is an all-new dedicated hybrid vehicle, and all future Prius family members will be as well. They will share common Prius attributes, but will be unique, with a special appeal to different buyers.”

Prius v is joined on the Toyota stand at Detroit by Prius c, a concept city car designed and engineered for outstanding fuel efficiency in a compact package, and Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

If Santa didn’t already have Rudolf and a flying sledge he would need a Toyota Hilux. The unstoppable Toyota Hilux is already renowned for its capacity to overcome any extreme challenge, from driving to the North Pole to conquering the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull. Now, the Hilux has successfully completed yet another extraordinary journey, travelling across the coldest, most hostile environment in the world, Antarctica, to reach the South Pole.

Between 10th November and 5th December 2010, four Hilux transported expedition members of the Indian National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) − studying snow chemistry, the glacial landscapes and the bedrock hidden beneath the ice − on a 4,600 km round trip from Novo Air Base, to the South Pole, and safely back.

The four Hilux vehicles were adapted by Icelandic Toyota 4×4 conversion specialists, Arctic Trucks, for the month-long expedition. Arctic Trucks has long ranked the Hilux its first choice amongst equivalent vehicles thanks to its proven, 40 year record of Quality, Durability and Reliability (QDR) under even the most extreme driving conditions.

Faced with extreme weather, average temperatures of below -40oC and peaks of -56oC, altitudes of over 3,400 m and the most brutal driving environment imaginable, NCAOR selected the Hilux for this remarkable expedition as it combines several exceptional attributes essential to survival on the world’s harshest continent.

Firstly, given the extreme conditions, it has proven very low comparable fuel consumption of 5.65mpg. Even with the use of less energy-efficient Jet 1A fuel, the vehicle engine running 24/7 and running extra heating system constantly on, this figure is 5 to 8 times lower than that achieved by tracked vehicles. This significantly reduces both transported fuel loads and fuel costs (one barrel of oil in Antarctica can cost $10,000). With this fuel efficiency, the expedition could rely on only one refueling point, established some 1,500 km from the journey starting point – Maitri Antarctica station.

Secondly, the Hilux has a uniquely high load carrying capacity. It combines a low unladen weight of just 2.2 tons with a payload capacity of 1.5 tons and a towing capacity of 3 tons – an essential attribute when carrying the expedition equipment, spare parts and participants, as well as 1,280 litres of fuel per vehicle.

Thirdly, this expedition maintained a faster average speed than any comparable expedition had previously attained.

Necessary modifications made by Arctic trucks included the integration of a crane to lift heavy equipment and fuel, the use of Jet 1A fuel with additional lubricants to tackle the extreme cold, revised front/rear suspension and drivetrain, extra heating system, crawler gears, crevasse protection and the fitment of extra large tyres with a pressure as low as 20 psi.

With this in mind, Toyota has launched a trial winter weather tyre programme to help motorists be best prepared for the kind of Arctic conditions Britain has suffered over the past few years.

The pilot scheme is targeting owners of some of Toyota’s most popular models: Auris, Avensis and Corolla, plus the Dyna and Hiace light commercials. Two Toyota centres are handling fitting, Currie Motors in West London and Ron Brooks Toyota in the East Midlands.

The rubber compound used in winter weather tyres is specially formulated to maintain performance at low temperatures, ensuring braking and the operation of active safety systems, such as traction control, are not compromised. In some countries, such as Germany, they are a legal requirement during the winter months.

Steve Settle, Toyota Customer Services Director, said: “Safety is of prime importance and, following the severe winters we’ve experienced recently, there is a much greater awareness of the benefits of fitting winter weather tyres.

“We have launched our trial programme to give Toyota owners the chance to gain the right advice and professional assistance to fit appropriate tyres to their vehicle. Although this is a pilot scheme, we will be monitoring its progress closely and there is the potential for it to be expanded to other models and to centres in other regions in the future.”

Furthermore, all Toyota centres are currently offering a free winter vehicle check, which includes a safety report, checks on lights, wipers and tyre condition, screenwash and oil top-up and a visual assessment of brake condition. The offer is available until 31 December with the bonus of a free car care kit worth £35 on presentation of a voucher downloadable from Toyota’s customer web site at www.toyota.co.uk.

It announced the study this week in a progress report on its product and technology strategies to use electricity and alternative power sources to develop low carbon vehicles that are less dependant on fossil fuels.

iQ EV is scheduled to go on sale in the USA in 2012, but Toyota is looking at its potential in other markets, including Europe, Japan and China.

The news of Toyota’s further development of its EV programme follows the unveiling this week of the RAV4 EV at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a new model produced in partnership with electric vehicle specialists Tesla Motors that will also be sold in the US from 2012.

Toyota plans to launch 11 hybrid vehicles by the end of 2012, including both all-new and re-designed models. It has also confirmed that Prius Plug-in Hybrid, currently undergoing a demonstration programme in London and other worldwide locations, will go on sale in Europe, Japan and the USA from early 2012. Toyota is expecting to sell around 50,000 cars a year, the majority in its home market.

Toyota continues to advance its development of fuel cell hybrid technology and expects to introduce a saloon fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV) in around 2015 in markets where a fuel supply infrastructure has been established – expected to be Europe, Japan and North America.

The performance of the secondary batteries used in EVs and hybrid vehicles is central to their ability to deliver improved driving range, acceleration, power economy and ease of recharging. Toyota is investing in research and development of next-generation batteries, beyond the lithium-ion type featured in Prius Plug-in, to bring about the big advances in performance that will be needed for electric-powered eco-cars to succeed in the mass market. In January this year it set up a new division to study next-generation battery production, with a team of around 100 researchers.

The options being investigated include solid-state batteries, where Toyota has made progress in overcoming performance and packaging issues, and metal-air batteries which have the potential to provide a much higher energy density than the lithium-ion type.

Toyota believes eco-cars can only have a positive impact on the environment if they are widely used. At the same time as it explores alternative power systems, it is continuing to improve the efficiency of its internal combustion engines, which account for the majority of sales, while raising performance, reducing costs and expanding the range available.

A total of 35 vehicles will be built for a demonstration and evaluation program through 2011, with the introduction of a final production model in the US in 2012. The final production vehicle will have a target range of 100 miles in actual road driving patterns, in a wide range of climates and conditions.

The RAV4 EV concept is based on the current Toyota RAV4 compact SUV body and fitted with a Tesla electric powertrain.

“When we decided to work together on the RAV4 EV, President Akio Toyoda wanted to adopt a new development model that incorporated Tesla’s streamlined, quick-action approach,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer, Toyota Motor Sales USA.

“The result was a hybrid – a new decision and approval process and a development style that our engineers refer to as “fast and flexible.”

Led by the Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America (TEMA) Technical Centre in Michigan, the new development model helped reduce development time without compromising product quality. The team has accomplished this by approaching the project as they would a typical mid-cycle “major-minor” product change. Specifically, midway through a generation, the team began with a fully engineered current-generation RAV4, to which was added a major powertrain option, along with minor feature and cosmetic changes.

Tesla was responsible for building and supplying the battery, as well as other related parts, that met specific Toyota engineering specifications in performance, quality and durability. Toyota was responsible for development and manufacturing leadership and the seamless integration of the powertrain.

“From the beginning, the customer experience has been the focus,” said Lentz. “In other words, how do we deliver an unconventional product to mainstream customers that is compelling and affordable and that offers an acceptable level of daily convenience.”

A large part of the team’s focus on the customer experience targeted driveability. In this case, the end goal is a vehicle with driveability characteristics as close to the conventional RAV4 as possible. For example, the demonstration vehicle weighs approximately 100kg more than the current RAV4 V6 (US model) yet it will accelerate from zero to sixty nearly as quickly.

This added weight factor required significant retuning of major components and a prioritized focus on weight distribution. Not only were suspension and steering modified significantly, major components needed to be relocated to better balance the increased mass of the battery pack.

The demonstration vehicle Toyota is currently testing is powered by a lithium metal oxide battery with useable output rated in the mid-30kwh range. However, many decisions regarding both the product, as well as the business model, have not been finalised. Battery size and final output ratings, as well as pricing and volume projections of the vehicle Toyota plans to bring to market in 2012, have not been decided.

As for a final assembly location, Toyota is considering many options and combinations. The basic vehicle will continue to be built at its Canadian production facility in Woodstock, Ontario. Tesla will build the battery and related parts and components at its new facility in Palo Alto, Calif. The method and installation location of the Tesla components into the vehicle is being discussed.

The RAV4 EV received several distinct exterior styling changes including a new front bumper, grille, fog lamps and head lamps. New EV badging and the custom “mutually exclusive” paint colour, completed the transformation. The interior received custom seat trim, multimedia dash displays, push-button shifter and dashboard meters. No cargo space was lost in the RAV4’s conversion to an electric powertrain.

In 1997, Toyota brought to market the first-generation RAV4 EV in response to the California zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate and was the first manufacturer to meet the mandate’s Memo of Agreement on volume sales. Powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, the vehicle had a range of between 80-110 miles on a single charge. From model year 1998 to model year 2003, only 1,484 vehicles were sold or leased in the U.S. 746 first-generation RAV4 EVs are still on the road (www.toyotarav4ev.com).

“A price and convenience proved to be critical success factors and they remain so today,” said Lentz. “But much has changed in the last few years. Most importantly, the growing level of awareness that sustainable mobility will come at a cost that must be shared by the automakers, government and the consumer.”

RAV4 EV is a further example of Toyota’s efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels and cut CO2 emissions by developing more efficient and alternative powertrain technologies. It has led the industry in the development of hybrid petrol-electric systems, as deployed in Prius, Auris hybrid and other models in markets worldwide.

All models are equipped with the 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which produces 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to help optimize performance and fuel economy. Internal components are optimized to reduce friction.

The 1.8-liter engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) on the base Corolla, while the LE model features the four-speed automatic standard. The four-speed automatic uses a torque converter with flex lockup for increased fuel efficiency, as well as uphill/downhill shift control. For a more engaging driving experience, the driver can shift the four-speed automatic manually by moving the shift lever to the left from its “D” position into the “S” position, then pushing forward for upshifts and back for downshifts. An indicator inside the combination gauge shows the gear selected. The 1.8-liter engine on the Corolla S transmits power through the five-speed manual transmission or the four-speed automatic.

The 1.8-liter engine has earned an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with the five-speed manual transmission, and 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the four-speed automatic transmission.

Handling and Ride
The smooth-riding Corolla is built around a stiff body structure that relies on high tensile-strength steel, gussets and cross members for its strength, rigidity and lightweight construction. Front suspension is composed of a compact, rigid L-arm-type MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar. The Corolla’s torsion beam rear suspension employs a coil-over-shock arrangement that allows efficient packaging along with solid handling and excellent ride comfort.

Brakes consist of 10.7-inch vented discs up front for all models and nine-inch drums in the rear. An electric power-assist steering system uses a compact motor, speed reducer and torque sensor built into the steering column. The system varies the amount of assistance according to engine RPM and vehicle speed. The result is appropriate weight and responsiveness at higher speeds, and light effort at low speeds. Electric power steering reduces parasitic losses to the engine, thereby aiding fuel economy. It is also environmentally efficient, because it does not require hydraulic oil.
