Toyota’s environmental leadership in offering motorists cleaner, more efficient cars has been confirmed by the latest industry-wide survey by Clean Green Cars. Its independent analysis of the average CO₂ emissions from vehicles sold in the UK during the first half of this year show that Toyota continues to outperform all other manufacturers, improving its figures to 124.49g/km – an improvement of 6.71 per cent on the same period last year.

This compares to an average 145.14g/km for the UK new car market as a whole.

Already well below the mandatory 130g/km target set by the European Union for 2012, the level achieved by Toyota reflects the impact of both its Hybrid Synergy Drive full hybrid technology, featured in Prius and Auris hybrid, and the application of Toyota Optimal Drive across its petrol and diesel powered models.

Toyota Optimal Drive covers a wide range of improvements to engine and transmission design and engineering that have cut fuel consumption and emissions and reduced mechanical losses with no compromise in performance. The introduction of Dual VVT-i advanced variable valve timing, engine stop-start technology and components that weigh less and are more compact has had a direct impact on CO₂ output. Prius adds an extra dimension to the results, its full hybrid powertrain delivering a segment-best 89g/km.

As others promise prototypes or tout test cars, Toyota celebrates ten years of the Prius in Europe with 200,000 sales. The full hybrid Toyota Prius, synonymous as the definitive hybrid car, was launched in 2000 to the European market, (1997 in Japan). With sales reaching 100,000 in 2008, that figure has now doubled to 200,000 in just two more years, confirming the significance of Prius as a mainstream model.  Global sales of Prius are expected to exceed two million by the autumn of 2010.

Prius well proven Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain has been designed for low maintenance and outstanding durability, awarding the Prius the lowest warranty cost per unit amongst all Toyota models. It is also one of the most successful powertrains in the history of the International Engine of the Year awards, with a total of 11 titles to date.

The recent launch of the Auris Hybrid marks the start of a dramatic expansion in Toyota’s full hybrid model range. The company aims to offer all of its European models with a Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain derivative as early as possible in the 2020s.

Advanced safety, style and premium equipment features now available

Already one of the most technologically advanced cars on the market, the third generation Toyota Prius now offers owners the opportunity to benefit from even more sophisticated features with the introduction of a new Safety Pack option.

The PCS system uses a millimetre-wave system and lane detection cameras to monitor the road ahead and detect the risk of a collision. If it judges a high possibility of an impact, it first alerts the driver with a buzzer and warning light on the dashboard. If the driver does not respond, it then activates the front seatbelt pretensioners and initiates emergency braking to minimise the consequences.

ACC uses the same radar system to automatically adjust vehicle speed to keep a set, safe distance from the vehicle ahead. When a slower vehicle is detected in the road ahead, ACC slows Prius by reducing engine power and, if required braking. If it cannot slow the vehicle sufficiently, an alarm is sounded to alert the driver. One the road ahead is clear, ACC automatically returns the car to its pre-selected cruising speed.

LED low beam headlights

The low beam LED headlights give Prius a distinctive, premium appearance. As well as being stylish, they last significantly longer than conventional halogen bulbs (+>1,500 hours) and high-intensity discharge lights (+3,000 hours). The headlights come with integrated headlamp washers and an automatic, dusk-sensing function.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of data recorders from Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles involved in accidents blamed on sudden acceleration and found that the throttles were wide open and the brakes weren’t engaged at the time of the crash, people familiar with the findings said.

The early results suggest that some drivers who said their Toyotas and Lexuses surged out of control were mistakenly flooring the accelerator when they intended to jam on the brakes.

NHTSA has received more than 3,000 complaints of sudden acceleration in Toyotas and Lexuses, including some dating to early last decade, according to a report the agency compiled in March. The incidents include 75 fatal crashes involving 93 deaths.

However, NHTSA has been able to verify that only one of those fatal crashes was caused by a problem with the vehicle, according to information the agency provided to the National Academy of Sciences. That accident last Aug. 28, which killed a California highway patrolman and three passengers in a Lexus, was traced to a floor mat that trapped the gas pedal in the depressed position.

Toyota has since recalled more than eight million cars globally to fix floor mats and sticky accelerators.

The NHTSA spokeswoman said the agency wouldn’t comment on its Toyota probe until a broader study is completed in conjunction with NASA, which is expected to take months.

Daniel Smith, NHTSA’s associate administrator for enforcement, told a panel of the National Academy of Sciences last month that the agency’s sudden-acceleration probe had yet to find any car defects beyond those identified by the company: pedals entrapped by floor mats, and accelerator pedals that are slow to return to idle.

“In spite of our investigations, we have not actually been able yet to find a defect” in electronic throttle-control systems, Mr. Smith told the scientific panel, which is looking into potential causes of sudden acceleration.

The 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine has a maintenance-free timing chain, an element-type oil filter, miniaturised spark plugs and no drive belts, features which deliver worthwhile cost savings.

Thanks to the efficiency of the Electronically Controlled Braking System, the front and rear brake pads are good for 40,000 and 70,000 miles respectively. High tyre pressures (2.4 or 2.3bar) reduce wear significantly, with typical durability of more than 30,000 miles. The standard 15 and 17-inch tyres also cost less than purpose-made alternatives.

The exhaust system is expected to last for more than five years, thanks to its high stainless steel content and the LED lamp bulbs have a 20-year lifespan.

Toyota again takes the lead in delivering advanced and efficient user-friendly low emissions technology with the launch of its new Auris Hybrid, the first full hybrid vehicle in the European C-segment.

The benefits of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain used in the new model go beyond exceptional fuel economy and low CO₂ emissions: it is user-friendly and delivers a quiet, comfortable and stress-free drive unlike anything else in the segment.

The system’s 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor generate a maximum 134bhp, giving nought to 62mph acceleration in 11.4 seconds and a top speed of 112mph, performance that matches any conventional 2.0-litre petrol or diesel hatchback.

RAV4, the Toyota that inspired a whole new market segment for compact recreational SUVs, is proving the master of sustained success with a new-look 2010 model.

As well as benefiting from new styling and higher equipment levels, the line-up has been revised to offer more choice, all with the performance, fuel efficiency and emissions rewards that come with Toyota Optimal Drive.

The current 2.2 D-4D diesel engine is featured in a new entry-point model in the range, with two-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission. And, for the first time, the range-topping 148bhp 2.2 D-4D D-CAT unit is offered in XT-R trim, with six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol with Toyota’s Multidrive S CVT system remains part of the RAV4 portfolio, now exclusively in XT-R specification with all-wheel drive.

New exterior styling

The 2010 RAV4 gains a strong new front-end design, anchored by a new, wider grille with horizontal blades and chrome accents, strengthening the model’s “contemporary urban” style appeal.

The grille, a signature feature of the latest Toyota models such as Avensis and Verso, is framed by new-look headlights. These incorporate projector-type low beam lamps, integrated into the new bonnet and front wing design, emphasising RAV4’s wide track and dynamic appearance.

The RAV4 SR also benefits from an improved specification with Toyota’s hard disc drive (HDD) satellite navigation system now part of the standard package (previously it was an option). This sophisticated navigation technology, which is also optionally available on XT-R models, includes dedicated disc space for owners to set up their own on-board “jukebox” of their favourite audio files.

These introductions build on what are already generous specifications. Highlights of the XT-R grade include cruise control, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, seven airbags, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and rear privacy glass; AWD versions add Intelligent All-wheel Drive and, with automatic and Multidrive S transmission, Downhill assist control (DAC).

The RAV4 SR, offered exclusively with the 2.2 D-4D D-CAT engine and six-speed automatic transmission, gains 18-inch dark-finish alloys, smoke-finish headlamps, a reversing camera, Smart Entry and Start and over-fenders.

A new chapter has been written in the world-conquering history of Toyota’s mighty Hilux as it took on the ice and fire of Iceland’s Eyjafallajökull volcano, just hours before its eruption brought chaos to the skies of Europe.

In just two months since the launch of its recall programme, Toyota has successfully processed 80 per cent of the UK cars that required adjustment to their accelerator pedal. The programme also ensured no new or used vehicles were sold without first receiving the required adjustment.

In spite of the high profile recall programme, Toyota continued to prosper in terms of new car sales, with healthy increases posted both in March and the first quarter of the year. Last month saw figures up 15.5 per cent compared to the same month in 2009, at more than 18,000 units. The first three months of the year show Toyota outperforming 2009 by almost seven per cent, with more than 28,800 new car sales.

The full hybrid Prius remains a star performer in Toyota’s line-up, with sales running at three times the 2009 level during the first quarter. Already this year almost 4,000 Prius have been sold, confirming its status as Britain’s – and indeed the world’s – most popular hybrid model.

Toyota’s sales performance has benefited from the Government’s Scrappage scheme, with many owners keen to trade in their old model in order to get behind the wheel of a brand new Toyota. Between January and March, 4,770 new Toyota cars were sold through the scheme, taking the total Scrappage-generated sales to just shy of 28,000 units – or more than 28,500 when light commercial vehicles are taken into account.

Just one month on from the launch of Toyota’s accelerator recall campaign, work has been completed on more than half – 90,000-plus – of the cars that have been identified as requiring attention.

An even larger proportion of recalled Prius models have received adjustment to their braking software programme with 58 per cent of the affected vehicles updated.

More than 200 Toyota service centres around the country are pulling out all the stops to ensure the recalls are carried out as quickly as possible with the least inconvenience to customers, with hundreds of technicians and other staff putting in extra hours and cancelling leave.

Toyota’s strategy and the commitment shown at local level are being appreciated: Toyota’s survey of around 600 owners who have had their cars attended to shows that 96 per cent are satisfied with their experience of the recall process.

As well as fixing cars that are on the road, Toyota has carried out the required work on all its new cars affected by the issue, which means no delay in deliveries to new owners. Buoyed by a record for February new car sales, Toyota is confident motorists will be keen to take advantage of Toyota’s impressive and extensive range of models through the March registration plate change and beyond.

Reykjavik-based Arctic Trucks, the specialist company which engineered the Hilux to cope with the extreme conditions of the Top Gear challenge has teamed up with Extreme World Races, who arrange the North and South Pole races, at the 2010 Outdoors Show combining their considerable skills in coping with Arctic conditions and racing events.

The Arctic Trucks fleet of vehicles includes two Toyota Hilux Invincible Double Cabs equipped with special features to meet the demands of tackling the country’s tundra, glaciers, lava fields and mountains, including a set of giant 38-inch tyres that allow the vehicle to traverse deep snow and thin ice. Trips can be between two and five days and longer expeditions through the wild landscape of Iceland can be arranged.

Toyota and the Clean Energy Partnership announced today (5 March) that Toyota has become a new international auto partner for the organisation. The move will add further impetus to CEP’s programme of advancing sustainable mobility through the development of hydrogen filling stations and a fuel supply network in Germany.

CEP’s activities are supported by the German Government, which is investing around €2 billion to support the development of hydrogen fuel cell and electric vehicle technologies. Toyota will contribute five of its zero-emissions FCHV-adv hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the programme in Germany by 2011.

Tadashi Arashima, President and CEO Toyota Motor Europe, said: “We firmly believe that fuel cell hybrid vehicles will play a major role in reducing emissions and achieving sustainable mobility, alongside petrol and plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles. These various applications of full hybrid technology will each play their role and co-exist in the future.

“Toyota aims at the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles around 2015. To achieve this goal a hydrogen charging infrastructure is necessary, so close tie-ups between car manufacturers and infrastructure companies are of vital importance. ”

Other CEP partners are setting up “CO2-free” and hydrogen filling stations at key locations between Berlin and Hamburg and the partnership is also campaigning to increase the proportion of hydrogen fuel produced from renewable sources to 50 per cent.

In creating the FT-86 (Future Toyota-86) Sports Concept, Toyota has directly referenced the excitement and fundamental fun-to-drive quality that characterised the Corolla AE-86. In its day the AE86 became a must-have model for rallying and circuit racing, with its front-engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and strong power to weight ratio. Even more than 20 years on from the end of production, it remains a popular choice with privateer rally teams.

The FT-86 Sports Concept previews a new-generation Toyota sports car, designed to recapture the spirit of the AE86, sharing its front-engine, rear-wheel drive credentials.

Driver-oriented concept

The FT-86 is designed to deliver simple, dynamic power with environmental responsibility. It is an entirely driver-orientated car, engineered to capture the intrinsic joy of driving through precise, instantaneous responses to even the smallest throttle and steering inputs.

Rather than use a heavy, large displacement engine for performance, it is equipped with a free-revving 2.0-litre petrol unit with a six-speed manual gearbox with compact dimensions, light weight and a low centre gravity. Deployed in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format, this powertrain delivers lively, accessible performance with engaging dynamic abilities and maximum driving pleasure.

Functional Beauty

Toyota’s ED2 European design and development centre dubs the styling of the FT-86 “Functional Beauty”, the classic sports car form having been generated entirely within the constraints of aerodynamics and function.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, and, measuring 4,160mm long overall, the bodywork has been rendered as compact as possible.

The cockpit is purely functional and ergonomically efficient, with widespread use of sporting, ultra-lightweight components and finishes that support the car’s balanced weight distribution and power to weight ratio.

Rather than treating the 2+2 interior design as a stylised addition to the cabin framework, a thin, tight-fitting skin has been applied to the essential cockpit components, as can be seen in the treatment of the dashboard and seat upholstery

The FT-86 measures 4,160mm long, 1,760mm wide and 1,260mm tall, with a 2,570mm wheelbase. It rides on 19-inch wheels shod with 225/40R19 tyres.

The Toyota Verso has been awarded a maximum, 5-Star rating in the 2010 Euro NCAP safety performance test programme.

In this latest set of results from Euro NCAP the Verso was the only car out of several manufacturers vehicles tested to receive the maximum five star rating under the revised, more demanding, 2010 Euro NCAP crash test programme. The Verso scored 89 per cent for Adult Occupancy, 75 per cent for Child Occupancy, 69 per cent for Pedestrian Impact and 86 per cent for Safety Assistance.

New Euro NCAP regulations were introduced in February 2009. This marks the start of a three step programme which will see the introduction of further, increasingly stringent crash testing rules in 2010 and 2012.

Significantly improved Pedestrian Impact performance constitutes one major change in this three step programme, with a 5-Star rating requiring a score of 25 per cent in 2009, 40 per cent in 2010 and 60 per cent in 2012. By achieving 69 per cent, the Verso already fulfils the requirements of the challenging, 2012 test target.

With adult and child occupant categories also becoming increasingly strict in 2010 and 2012, vehicles now need to achieve excellent results in all four categories to merit a 5-star rating.

In 2009, the iQ, Avensis and Prius all achieved the same maximum 5-Star rating.

Toyota’s RAV4 gets a fresh new look for 2010, with a redesign that blends contemporary urban style with the durability for which Europe’s original recreational compact SUV is renowned.

Unveiled this week at the Geneva motor show, the 2010 RAV4 has an all-new front-end treatment that not only looks good, but is also more aerodynamically efficient. A wider grille, with horizontal bars and chrome accents displays the new Toyota family look that has been established on the latest Avensis, Verso and Auris models. The grille is flanked by new headlights, with projector-type low beam lamps.

A new flowing bonnet design helps to emphasise RAV4’s wide track and dynamic appearance, qualities that are further expressed in a new full-width front bumper. Further chrome detailing around the foglamps and bonnet moulding add an extra dash of premium appeal.

Inside the cabin the high quality finish is complemented by new leather and Alcantara upholstery.

In the UK the 2010 RAV4 will carry forward its Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains, with 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol and 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT diesel engines, with six-speed manual, Mutridrive S (Toyota’s advanced continuously variable transmission) and six-speed automatic transmissions. CO2 emissions start from just 150 g/km.

Further details about the UK model range will be announced nearer the on-sale date.

Exclusively designed for the European market, the Auris HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) introduces full hybrid technology to a core model at the heart of Toyota’s model line-up.
It marks the first step in the deployment of HSD technology across the company’s entire European model range by the early 2020s.

Built in Britain at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston factory, it targets an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid drive technology.

The prospect of Britain – and Europe’s – first home-manufactured full hybrid model was welcomed by the UK Government. Business Minister Ian Lucas said: “I’m delighted that Toyota has chosen its UK plants to produce the first European Toyota hybrid car and I look forward to seeing it when I’m in Geneva for the Motor Show. Toyota’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions gives fresh impetus to our vision for the UK to lead in the design, manufacture and use of low carbon cars.”

Going beyond the benefits of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions that are inherent in Hybrid Synergy Drive, the new Auris HSD will deliver everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness for a smooth and sophisticated driving experience that is unlike anything else in the C-segment.

Auris HSD will be available in two levels: 89g/km and 92g/km, both offer the lowest CO2 emissions and strongest fuel economy in their class. HSD will thus play a significant role in further reducing Toyota’s European whole-fleet average CO2 emissions. These have already fallen by 14g/km between 2008 and 2009 to 132g/km, thanks to the introduction of Toyota Optimal Drive technology.

Exterior design
Auris HSD adopts the new exterior styling introduced across the Auris 2010 model range, including a completely redesigned front-end. It also displays a number of model-specific features which help improve the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and reference the presence of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.

The opening in the upper front grille has been optimised to promote a smooth flow of air over the upper half of the body, and the lower grille has been made larger to reduce airflow resistance and improve engine cooling efficiency.

With a revised foglamp configuration, the flat, vertical surface of the corners of the front bumper corrects the airflow as it passes over the front wheels, helping minimise turbulence in the wheelarches.

Further improvement in aerodynamic efficiency is achieved by a ride height reduced by 5mm; purpose-designed alloy wheels with integrated aerodynamic caps; low rolling resistance tyres; and a large, roof-mounted rear spoiler. Working together to smooth and control the flow of air over the car, these HSD-specific design modifications reduce the coefficient of drag from Cd0.290 to 0.283, contributing to reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Interior design
The interior features a number of modifications, including a revised instrument binnacle in which the tachometer has been replaced by an Eco Drive Assist Monitor. The centre-dial information panel includes additional HSD-specific information such as Energy Flow and Eco Drive Result monitors.

A hybrid blue smart start button has been added to the side of the instrument cluster and the centre console incorporates switches for the Parking Control and EV, ECO and Power drive modes, and a shift-by-wire gear lever.

The illumination is changed to display greenish-white numbers on a hybrid blue background on the meter panel, audio and heating controls, and the Smart Start, Drive Mode and Parking Control switches.

A choice of upholsteries specific to the model will also be available: a blue-flecked fabric or Alcantara panels with leather surrounds.

Hybrid Synergy Drive
Auris HSD is a full hybrid capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, or a combination of both. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system delivers the energy-saving qualities of a series hybrid, combined with the performance benefits of a parallel hybrid.

The technology delivers impressive, seamless acceleration and remarkably quiet running, with class-leading fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from 74.3mpg and 89g/km.

Toyota’s latest generation Hybrid Synergy Driver uses a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine, a powerful electro motor, generator, high performance battery and a power control unit. A power split device with a planetary gear system combines and reallocated power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to the car’s operational requirements.

The key to the successful installation of the system in Auris’s front-engine platform is the fact the electric motor, generator and power split device are housed in a single transmission casing that is the size of a conventional gearbox. The seamless E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by shift-by-wire technology via an electric shift lever.

The lightweight and compact four-cylinder, 1,798cc Atkinson Cycle VVT-i engine develops 97bhp at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The high performance permanent magnet synchronous 60kW electric motor generates a maximum 207Nm between zero and 13,000rpm.

Powered by the hybrid battery, the electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration in normal driving. When the car is operating in EV (electric vehicle) mode, it alone powers the driven wheels.
During deceleration and under braking, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking, recovering kinetic energy that would normally be wasted as heat for storage as electrical energy in the battery.

In combination, the petrol engine and electric motor generated a maximum system power output of 134bhp, giving performance to match a conventional 2.0-litre petrol or diesel hatchback. Conversely, Auris HSD lower CO2 emissions and significantly lower NOx emissions than diesel-powered cars of comparable performance.

Furthermore, when operating in its switchable EV mode, it cuts CO2 and NOx emissions to zero, driving for up to 1.3 miles (2km) at speeds up to 31mph (50kph), depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions.

Auris HSD eco driving experience
Auris HSD has four driving modes, including three that can be selected ”on-demand” by the driver to maximise the HSD powertrain’s capabilities and provide comprehensive eco driving support for those who want to adopt a more environmentally efficient style of driving.

EV mode allows for ultra-quiet running on electric motor power lone, giving zero fuel consumption and emissions. ECO mode maximises efficiency and fuel economy, and Power mode boosts system performance. In addition, an Eco Drive Monitor helps driver’s maximise the HSD system’s efficiency.

The driver can monitor the flow of energy around the HSD system in each mode, via the multi-information display in the instrument panel, which helps promote an easy, fuel-efficient driving technique. There is also a clear and simple power consumption gauge that shows how much power is being used or generated at any given time.

Taking advantage of the inherent quietness of Hybrid Synergy Drive, Toyota has paid special attention to NVH reduction measures to create a calm and quiet cabin environment at all speeds. Road and engine noise have been rigorously suppressed with extensive use of sound-proofing materials. Full-thickness glazing and a multi-layer acoustic windscreen further reduce noise for quieter performance at cruising speeds.

Auris HSD in the UK
Auris HSD is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in July. Further details of performance, technical specifications, model grades and equipment features will be announced nearer the launch date.

The RAV4 2010 will break cover at the show, presenting a more sophisticated front-end design and a more refined interior. Thanks to its range of Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains, RAV4 2010 will be one of the cleanest competitors in the compact SUV segment.

Work begins this morning (Wednesday 10 February) at 206 Toyota service centres across the UK to implement the fix to the accelerator pedal on the cars affected by the recall. Toyota technicians have received specific training in the repair, the parts are in stock and the first cars are being attended to.

Toyota service centres have also received the necessary software to update the Prius brake system.

The accelerator pedal recall involves 180,865 vehicles in the UK and Toyota anticipates it can be accomplished in a matter of weeks thanks to service centres extending their opening hours. The pedal repair should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.

Steve Settle, Toyota GB Customer Services Director said: “We are doing everything we can to ensure our customers’ vehicles are attended to as promptly as possible. With the assistance of the DVLA and the commitment of all our centres, we have been able to launch a repair programme that is thorough, efficient and effective in ensuring all the vehicles affected by the recall are fixed.”

“Toyota service centres will be working extended hours and weekends. As a consequence, they have the combined capacity to repair 6,000 vehicles per day. By Friday we will have received 100,000 repair parts from Japan. We have implemented the recall as quickly as possible.”

Toyota will prioritise those customers whose cars have been identified as having the fault via the Toyota customer helpline or directly with centres.

There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

This is caused because the accelerator pedal mechanisms concerned may become worn. This progressive wear, combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, can cause friction in the mechanism to increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position.

In case of occurrence, the driver may notice that the accelerator pedal is progressively harder to depress or is slower to return. A rough or chattered feeling may also be experienced when depressing/releasing the accelerator pedal.

Toyota will implement a recall in Europe for this matter. The details of corrective action and implementation will be communicated directly to customers with vehicles potentially affected.

The models and exact number of potentially affected vehicles is under investigation.

A running change in production using different parts has already been implemented model-by-model in the European production. Therefore there is no need or intention to stop production in Europe.

Toyota has launched its new Auris 2010, with a sharper appearance inside and out, higher quality materials throughout the cabin and a suspension system tweaked for extra ride comfort and stability. As well as packing much more visual appeal, the range of three and five-door hatchbacks continues to deliver a class leading combination of performance, fuel economy and low CO2 emissions from its line-up of Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains.

Restyled exterior
Rather than simple styling tweaks, Toyota has gone back to the sheet metal to give its new Auris 2010 more road presence and driver appeal. The front end has been comprehensively reworked with a new deep bumper with integrated fog lamps (TR and SR models), new swept-back headlamps, a revised bonnet profile with stronger crease lines and a grille that adopts the Toyota family identity established by the latest generation Avensis and Verso.

New 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels have been designed for the TR and SR models and all versions feature turn indicator lights integrated into the door mirrors. At the rear there is a smart flash of chrome across the top of the number plate, revised lamp clusters and a new rear bumper with extended corner sections that create a “catamaran” look. Owners can choose from seven exterior colours, including three new metallic shades.

High quality cabin
A soft-touch material has been introduced across the top of the instrument binnacle and around the glovebox, and the centre console has been revised with changes to the instrument design for smarter appearance and improved clarity. Auris’s distinctive bridged centre console has a new silver finish that matches the doorhandles and the shape of the handbrake has been changed for easier operation and improved tactile quality.

White illumination has been introduced for the Optitron instrument dials, with sportier amber lighting for the analogue instruments featured in the new Auris SR. To complete the fresh look, new cloth upholstery designs have been introduced.

Retuned suspension and steering
Toyota’s engineers have taken UK customer feedback into account in fine-tuning Auris’s suspension to better suit European roads and driver preferences (T2, TR models). The revisions have undergone extensive local testing and the result is stable high-speed driving performance with secure handling and greater ride comfort.

The speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) has also been revised and refined to deliver better feedback and improved vehicle agility.

Toyota Optimal Drive powertrains
Auris retains its current range of petrol and diesel engines and six-speed manual and MultiMode transmissions, all of which benefit from Toyota Optimal Drive technologies for reduced weight, higher efficiency and reduced emissions. Performance data is unchanged, but they continue to offer a strong balance of performance, fuel efficiency and low emissions.

The Government-supported Scrappage scheme is drawing to a close next month, but it is far from motorists’ last chance to enjoy a big discount when trading in their old car for a brand new Toyota.

Under Toyota’s new Swappage scheme, customers can still snap up a £2,000 saving on the price of an eligible new Yaris, Auris or Avensis. What’s more, unlike the Scrappage scheme, Swappage is open to owners of vehicle between seven and 10 years old, that is those registered between 1 March 2000 (W-plate) and 28 February 2003 (52-plate). And, as the name Swappage implies, the vehicles that are traded will not necessarily be sent for end-of-life recycling.

‘The famous quality, reliability and keen cost-of-ownership of our models have made them a hugely popular choice for motorists taking advantage of Scrappage,’ said Richard Balshaw, Toyota Sales Director. With Swappage we are committed to giving even more people the chance to acquire a new Toyota at a genuine bargain price.’

The new scheme is available on new cars ordered up to 31 March and registered up to 31 July this year. Trade-in vehicles have to be DVLA registered, insured and have a current MoT certificate, and the person making the purchase must have been the registered keeper of the trade-in vehicle for the last 12 consecutive calendar months.

Toyota today unveiled the FT-CH dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.  The FT-CH is a concept that meets Toyota’s strategy to offer a wider variety of full hybrid choices to its customers, in addition to the introduction of plug-in hybrids (PHVs) and battery electrics (EVs) in model year 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCHVs) in 2015 in global markets.

The CH stands for compact hybrid as in compact class and it’s a concept that can best be defined by comparing it with the mid-size class Prius. The FT-CH captures the spirit and functionality of a car that thrives in the inner-city environment; sized right to be nimble, responsive and maneuverable.  

The FT-CH was styled at Toyota’s European Design and Development (ED²) centre in Nice, France.  Compared to Prius, it is 22 inches shorter in overall length, yet loses less than an inch in overall width. In spite of its compact external dimensions, FT-CH was designed for maximum passenger comfort and interior roominess, with an imaginative sense of style.

ED² designers looked to capture the vivid, high-energy appeal of what has come to be called the 8-bit generation. Popularized in the early 80’s, 8-bit microprocessor technology dominated the budding home video game industry. Today, 8-bit is considered a specific retro-style that is embraced by such things as 8-bit genre music and 8-bit inspired art. 

The direct reference to the 8-bit generation is meant to be fun and innovative, colourful and stylish, with strong appeal to young buyers.  Lighter in weight and even more fuel efficient than Prius, the concept specifically targets a lower price point than Prius, thus appealing to a younger, less-affluent buyer demographic. 

In the early 2010s, Toyota plans to sell a million hybrids per year globally, a majority of those in North America. To accomplish this, Toyota will launch eight all new hybrid models in the USA over the next few years*.  These will not include next generation versions of current hybrids; instead, they will be all new dedicated hybrid vehicles, or all new hybrid versions of existing petrol engine models.

Toyota also plans to introduce plug-in hybrids (PHVs) and battery electrics (EVs) to global markets in 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCHVs) in 2015.

To demonstrate these technologies, the Toyota stand at Detroit will also feature the Prius PHV, FCHV-advanced fuel cell vehicle and FT-EV II electric concept.

For the last decade Toyota’s focus has been to concentrate on a comprehensive advanced technology strategy including EVs, PHVs, and FCHVs. Common to all three is the move to electrification, the full commitment to advanced battery technology and how lessons learned from conventional hybrid R&D have given Toyota a leg-up on all three.

Toyota’s top selling Yaris enters 2010 as an even stronger market proposition, thanks to a class-leading combination of fuel efficiency and low emissions, backed up by enhanced equipment specifications and styling details.

Thanks to the successful application of Toyota Optimal Drive technologies, Yaris continues to set standards in its class, with every model in the range delivering sub-120g/km CO2 emissions.

The 1.33 Dual VVT-i engine with Stop & Start demonstrates the all-round achievement of Toyota Optimal Drive. As shown in the table below, it gives Yaris more power and torque than its leading competitor models, while at the same time returning better emissions and fuel economy – 120g/km and 55.4mpg (combined cycle).

Similarly the 1.0 VVT-i petrol unit – three-time class winner in the International Engine of the Year Awards – and the 1.4 D-4D diesel maximise efficiency and emissions performance with refinement and driveability. Respectively they produce 118 and 109g/km of CO2 (110g/km 1.4 D-4D with Multimode transmission) and return combined cycle fuel economy of 56.5 and 68.9mpg.

In terms of cost ownership, Yaris owners can thus benefit from significant savings on fuel and annual VED costs.

Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan has today confirmed the introduction of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, a plug-in version of the third-generation Prius petrol-electric hybrid vehicle.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV) offers greater range on electric power only, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The PHV uses lithium-ion batteries – a first for Toyota – which can be charged from an external source as well as by the car’s own hybrid drive system.

Approximately 600 units will be introduced in Japan, the United States, and Europe over the first half of 2010. 20 will come to the UK in mid 2010.

The Prius PHVs will be leased to government ministries, local governments, corporations including electric power companies, universities and research agencies, for use in a demonstration programme aimed at collecting real-world driving data and spurring the development of battery-charging infrastructure.

In Europe, Toyota will lease approximately 200 units, 20 of which will come to the UK in mid-2010. The details of these UK leases will be the subject of a separate announcement closer to the time. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid will also be introduced in France and Portugal, with the company also considering 10 other European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, along with countries in other regions, such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Prius PHV can be charged using an external power source such as a household electric outlet and is the first vehicle produced by Toyota to be propelled by a lithium-ion battery. Further, due to the battery’s expanded capacity, the vehicle has an extended electric-vehicle driving range, enabling use as an electric vehicle (EV) for short distances. While for medium and long distances, after battery power depletes to a level no longer allowing EV driving mode, the vehicle functions as a conventional petrol-electric hybrid vehicle (HV). Thus, use is not constrained by remaining battery power or availability of battery-charging infrastructure.

Furthermore, PHVs, such as the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, are expected to achieve fuel efficiency superior to conventional petrol-electric HVs, reduce consumption of fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions and atmospheric pollution. Verifications and rules that gauge the performance of a PHV (i.e. official fuel consumption tests) differ from region to region, but in Europe, the Prius PHV emits only 59g CO2 per km in the New European Driving Cycle*.

‘The Plug-in Hybrid technology is a key driver on our road towards sustainable mobility,’ said Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Executive Vice-President Takeshi Uchiyamada. ‘Based on Toyota’s full hybrid powertrain, PHV represents today the most practical way of increasing the use of electricity for personal transport. Now we need to investigate market acceptance of this new technology.’

Toyota believes that to meet the diversification of energy sources plug-in hybrid vehicles are a highly suitable environmentally considerate option. Toyota is therefore actively encouraging market introduction to aid understanding and to promote the early widespread use of PHVs. Toyota will analyse feedback regarding the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, with an aim to begin sales in the tens of thousands of units to the general public in two years.

The Toyota Hilux, Europe’s most popular pick-up, has undergone significant revisions for 2010 with improved performance specifications making in-demand models more readily available for customers.

Its legendary toughness remains and it now has a healthy 20 per cent increase in power and extra torque from the 2.5 D-4D engine delivering a welcome rise in performance.

Improved engine performance

Toyota has revised the 2.5 D-4D engine, the core power unit in the Hilux range, to produce significantly more power and extra torque. Maximum output has been increased from 118 to 142bhp, a rise of 20 per cent. Maximum torque is up by 18Nm to a maximum 343Nm at 2,000rpm.

These improvements have been achieved by the introduction of a new high-output turbocharger and new fuel injectors that are more precise, improving throttle response and performance. To cope with the extra power, the pistons have been upgraded to a new high-strength material.

As well as giving more flexible driving performance, the changes have cut Hilux’s nought to 62mph acceleration time by 2.5 seconds to 12.5 seconds. Emissions performance is unchanged, however, at 219g/km – one of the lowest figures in the segment.

The 2.5 D-4D engine is matched to a five-speed manual transmission and is available in all three Hilux body styles: Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab.

Improved payloads

Increases in Hilux’s gross vehicle weights have yielded improvements in payload performance, notably for Double Cab models where capacity has increased by 35kg on the HL2 Double Cab and 25kg on the HL3 Double Cab.

Revised model range and equipment specifications

The Hilux range has been revised with the high-power 3.0 D-4D engine now available exclusively in the Invincible Double Cab.

Leather upholstery and satellite navigation with Bluetooth are now options on the Invincible, making the flagship model a stronger price prospect for more customers.

Two smart grey upholstery cloths have been introduced, and a new two-tone leather option in anthracite and slate grey with contrasting light grey stitching is available for the Invincible.

Satellite navigation with Bluetooth is offered as an option on the HL3 Double Cab. A Sport Deck and an Urban Pack (front guard, scuff plates and front and rear parking sensors) are available for both the HL3 and Invincible Double Cabs.

Platinum by name, silver in colour and probably worth its weight in gold, Toyota’s top-of-the-range Aygo is big on driver appeal. But for all its bling connotations, it comes with a modest price tag.

Aygo Platinum’s value for money profile is even greater for anyone ordering their car before the end of December, as they will be able to avoid the 1 January increase in VAT.

Aygo Platinum builds on the specification of the Aygo+ model, adding 14-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, Crystal Silver metallic paint, six-speaker audio system, Alcantara and leather upholstery and leather gear knob trim.

Three and five-door versions are available, powered by Toyota’s 1.0-litre VVT-I petrol engine with Toyota Optimal Drive – winner of the sub-one-litre class of the International Engine of the Year awards for the past three years. Five-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard, with the option of Toyota’s Multimode system.

The Aygo Xtra Protected pack is available as an option for Aygo Platinum, priced £380, it adds rear parking sensors and additional side and rear protection mouldings to help guard against the rough and tumble of urban driving. Vehicle Stability Control can also be specified as an option, at £340.
