Powered by an all-new 1215cc three-cylinder engine producing a class-leading 137PS with 121Nm of torque, the Tiger Explorer sports a high specification that will see it set a new benchmark in the adventure touring class.

The thoroughly modern powerplant utilises a new ride-by-wire electronic throttle system, allowing Triumph engineers to endow the Tiger Explorer with a number of high-tech rider aids for added rider safety and comfort. Cruise control, switchable traction control and switchable ABS are all standard fitment on the Tiger Explorer. A tough shaft drive system has been developed for the Tiger Explorer, allowing virtually maintenance free touring, and the latest Triumph has been designed to go 10,000 miles between servicing – ideal for long distance adventures.

Rider and pillion comfort are at the heart of the Tiger Explorer’s philosophy. The rider position is highly adjustable, from a tall and commanding 860mm seat height down to a low of 810mm (with low accessory seat fitted), with both the screen and handlebars adjustable to suit individual rider preferences. The pillion hasn’t been forgotten about either, with a wide and comfortable seat equipped with large grab handles for comfort and security.

Triumph’s reputation for delivering best-in-class handling continues with the Tiger Explorer, which offers a combination of excellent low-speed balance and composed high speed capability. The strong tubular steel trellis frame bears a strong visual resemblance to other models in the Triumph family, while the single-sided rear swingarm showcases the 17” 10-spoke rear wheel. Adjustable 46mm front forks allow the rider to tailor the Tiger Explorer to their individual needs and riding conditions, with the long-travel suspension and 19” front wheel giving the Tiger Explorer the capability to cope with unpaved roads.

All-new instrumentation and switchgear is both comprehensive and intuitive. The LCD instrument pack is thumb operated via switches on the handlebars and features a comprehensive onboard computer, including an ambient air temperature indicator with ice warning. The instrumentation also comes pre-configured for Triumph’s tyre pressure monitoring system, available as an optional accessory.

A comprehensive range of accessories is headlined by a high quality luggage range. The two-box pannier system provides 60 litres of luggage space, while the top box offers a further 35 litres of capacity, enough for a full-face helmet.

A best-in-class 950w generator has been fitted to the Tiger Explorer to facilitate the simultaneous running of multiple electrical accessories. Among the official accessories available are heated rider and pillion seats, heated grips, high power fog lights and a top box with integrated power supply for charging on the move. The bike also comes fitted with a power socket situated close to the ignition, which can be used to power a GPS unit or items of heated clothing.

Three colour options are available for the 2012 Tiger Explorer: Sapphire Blue, Graphite and Phantom Black. The price will be announced in January.

An all-new open-class Adventure bike, the Tiger Explorer that will challenge BMW is the big news. The largest-displacement adventure bike the Hinkley company has built.

Details on all three new models are scanty so far, but Triumph tells us this model gets a new steel chassis, a 19-inch front wheel (and 17-inch back), a class-leading 950-watt generator, shaft drive, optional hard luggage, ABS (with an ‘off’ switch), adjustable seat height and a burly three-cylinder engine “in excess of 1200cc.”

If Triumph applies the same long-stroke tuning trickery to its 1050cc engine it used with the excellent Tiger 800 (a stroked 675), we don’t expect much more peak horsepower compared to the 1050, but there will be a lot more torque — maybe even the most of any Adventure bike. There is no word on weight, availability or pricing.

The Rocket III Roadster, which received its world press launch in the UK last month, is the latest version of our cult 2.3 litre motorcycle that created such a stir when it was first introduced in 2004.
This new motorcycle features a sophisticated ABS system, blacked-out styling and revised ergonomics plus a new exhaust system for increased power and torque. The Rocket III Roadster now pumps out a mighty 221Nm – more than any other volume production motorcycle.

Also unveiled is the Bonneville Sixty. Inspired by the classic colour scheme of the 1960 incarnation of Triumph’s most famous model, the Bonneville Sixty is a limited run of 650 T100s featuring a unique two-tone Meriden Blue/Caspian Blue combination with hand painted pinstripes. Each motorcycle comes with a numbered plaque on the handlebar clamp and an individual certificate of authenticity.

The third special edition released at the show is the Speed Triple SE. Triumphs most famous model gains updated suspension and two-tone paint for the first time in its 15 year history.

Also on show are two new premium colour options for the Thunderbird cruiser.
The flamboyant Phantom Blue Haze and Phantom Red Haze Thunderbirds are hand painted at Triumph’s Hinckley factory and contain a high sparkle content that creates an impression of incredible depth in sunlight, transforming it from almost black to a vibrant blue or red.
The new colour options will be made available on a limited run of Thunderbirds in early 2010.
